I haven't done any of my usual weekly recs in ages, so all the more reason to let myself be tempted by the @merlinbingo bonus badge for this month and spread some love! And what better theme for that than marriage?

That being said, some of these fics stretch the trope the tiniest bit. They do all have a wedding, a proposal, or a intended proposal though. Apart from picking my faves, I tried to vary it a bit, so only three out of these five are merthur.

This Dance of Days by kianspo

Pairing: Arthur/Merlin

Rating: Mature || Warnings: none || Word count: 8,090

Tags: Modern AU, Romance, Marriage Proposal, Established Relationship, flangst

Summary:

In which people get married, Arthur is confused a lot, Uther gives relationship advice, and Merlin isn’t scared, except when he is, but only a little bit. Also Merlin steals things, and Gwaine is up to no good.

Why I rec this: I love this fic so much because while Merlin and Arthur are, indeed, in an established relationship and clearly very much in love, there's still so much pining on both sides. There's such a well-handled undercurrent of realistic insecurity and hesitance to it, and it makes the eventual resolution so, so satisfying. I also just love how both Arthur and Merlin, as well as the rest of the cast, are handled, and the writing is absolutely fantastic.

A Happy Mistake by Polomonkey

Pairing: Morgana/Vivian

Rating: Teen || Warnings: none || Word count: 2,812

Summary:

“I don’t suppose you've considered the possibility of ceasing this farce and attending Gwen’s wedding alone like a mature, self-actualised adult?” “Shut up, Arthur,” Morgana and Merlin said in sync, which was a party trick they’d been perfecting for a while. Morgana absolutely refuses to show up without a date to her ex's wedding. Surely taking Vivian can't be so bad?

Why I rec this: I have such a soft spot for this pairing, even though I can't for the life of me remember how I got into it. This fic encapsulates perfectly why I love it; both Morgana and Vivian are their awesome, snarky selves, the tension is off the charts, and I laughed through half the fic. The wedding isn't Morgana's and Vivians, yes, but it's what gets them together and also, Gwen and Elena get married which is also pretty awesome.

Coffee and Cherries by FutureAlien

Pairing: Merlin/Arthur

Rating: Teen || Warnings: Chose not to use Archive Warnings || Word count: 4,542

Summary:

Arthur knows for a fact, in that tiny kitchen at a quarter to three, after who knows how many cups of coffee, that he will never love another human so much as this.

Why I rec this: In fact, I've recced this fic before, but I cannot make a marriage (proposal) rec list and not put this on it. It might just be my favourite proposal fic ever; it's so, so tender from start to finish, the atmosphere is beautiful, Merlin and Arthur's banter and characters are spot on, and it never fails to put a huge, sappy grin on my face. I've re-read it so many times and it's fantastic every single time.

Pairing: Leon/Merlin

Rating: Mature || Warnings: none || Word count: 2,090

Summary:

No magic before coffee. Unless it's super duper important.

Why I rec this: Listen. I have such a huge, huge soft spot for this pairing, even if there exist like, 30 fics of them on ao3. And this one? This one is so, so soft (also, pretty hot tbh, especially the other parts of the series it belongs to.) I just utterly adore the idea of Merlin and Leon spending their immortality together, not to mention that this fic does brush upon Arthur too. They're just... so damn soft, and both idiots, and there's a small, brilliant twist to it to top it off.

Summary:

“Well,” Arthur said as he stood at the end of the aisle beside Merlin. “Look at this. Never thought we’d be here.” Merlin didn’t answer. It was too hard to stop himself from saying that he’d always thought that they would. Be there. In a church, in front of a minister. Together. Just not like this. In which Arthur and Merlin have a horrible break up. A year later they're best man and man of honour respectively at Lance and Gwen's wedding. And they can deal with that, they really can.

Why I rec this: Okay yes, yes I know this one seems to be a bit out of place on this list, but also, it's not. Marriage is a central theme and overall vital to the story, and not only Lance's and Gwen's, and I just love this fic to pieces. The angst is delicious, the pining is off the charts, the resolution super satisfying, and it all ends happily. The angst tag is serious though, so if you've come to this marriage rec list looking for heaps of fluff and nothing else (which... yeah. One would expect, I'm aware, but I'm a sucker for angst I don't know what you expected) then maybe this isn't the right fic. If you like to see them work for it though, it absolutely is. Just don't forget the tissues.

Genshin Impact Chapter 1 Act 3: A Reaction.

Chapter 1 Act 3 is what took my experience with this game from “good game” to “masterpiece”.

THIS POST CONTAINS MANY, MANY SPOILERS FOR GENSHIN IMPACT CHAPTER 1: ACT 3

Genshin Impact has some problems— actually, it has a shit ton of problems. But during the fight against hordes of Fatui, with the Adepti channeling their abilities through my gang, flying through them as Oz, decimating them with Diluc— I just thought, this is the best time I’ve had in a mobile game in my life.

This game might not be perfect now— it’s only a quarter of the way done if we’re counting Karenri’ah. But it will be a fucking masterpiece once it’s all out. If this is the level of quality we’re getting for our archon quests, this game is going to be an amazing time on story alone.

KEQING

I love Keqing with all my heart. If she were alive today she would be a socialist here to topple the ruling 1%. When ningguang asked Aether who they trusted more, her or Keqing, I hit the Keqing button as fast as possible.

I think one of my favorite things about Keqing is that she’s so completely honest, which is unusual for a Liyue politician. If she doesn’t like something, she’ll speak out against it. If she thinks something else should be happening, she’ll make it happen. She can probably be deceitful at times, but in general she’s straightforwards in that she wants a government for the people and by the people.

I can’t wait for her story quest!

NINGGUANG

pretty.... voice pretty....

Ningguang is cool. Her JP voice is very pretty, like she could do ASMR videos online or smth. One thing I decidedly did not like about Ningguang is how her personality just ???? flips? In the middle of the quest, for no reason other than “because plot”.

It’s established that Ningguang cares about two things more than anything— the Jade palace and Mora. Why, then, would she destroy the Jade palace for the sake of Liyue? I get that she’s a good person at heart at all, but I want to see more of her indecision, her brain saying “mora” and her heart saying “Liyue”. The way she just flips on a dime isn’t really strange but it does contradict with her preexisting characterization.

Childe’s Boss Fight!

The section of this quest from Childe’s fight to the Adepti + Qixing battle is just nonstop adrenaline.

Childe is IMO a lot more fun than Dvalin (sorry Dvalin). I’m at WL5 and have a tendency to play fast and loose with important mechanics like.... dodging, for example.... and Childe’s Mask Electro form ended up destroying my team. I killed him with Guoba because everyone else besides Xiangling was dead. I

Another thing I really enjoy about Childe’s boss fight is that in the irrationalities of Childe as a character, it actually makes sense. Genshin is decent at making weekly bosses logical excursions— Andrius wants you to get stronger, Dvalin’s weekly fight is ~~all a dream~~; but tbh sometimes the weekly bosses don’t make sense. Andrius wants to train us, not murder us! How does dvalin, a dream slash memory that doesn’t exist, manage to knock someone out?

Childe as a weekly boss actually makes perfect sense. He’s an adrenaline junkie addicted to the thrill of fighting people— to put this in modern AU terms, he’s the guy who’s first in line to ride the rollercoaster that failed all of its health and safety checks. Childe wants to befriend the Traveler entirely because they’re stronger than him, so that he can fight them over and over again until he’s the strongest. Of course, this will never happen, because the Traveler is the MC and therefore is stronger than all others. However, in this way Childe being a repeatable boss makes 100% perfect sense— he actually wants to fight the Traveler again and again and again.

The one question I have about Childe is how in the living feck are the Fatui letting him join the Traveler and fight for them *against the Fatui*??? I think this might be touched on in Childe’s Story quest, which I’ll do in a bit, but like????? They let him keep his delusion and just walk over to Aether like “aight fam I’m on your team now”? How?

Jade Chamber/ Guizhong Ballista vs Sea Monster Fight!!

Basically, all my charged adrenaline from nearly dying to Childe just came to a head in this one huge fantastic fight.

And Xiao :)

I absolutely loved seeing the Adepti and the Qixing work together. This fight was probably my favorite fight in the whole game— the music was amazing (soundtrack where), the graphics were so nice, the adepti were so feckin cool, using everyone’s abilities was n I ce. My adrenaline was reaching its highest point at this fight and it was just perfect. It was just so fecking fun after days of WL5 pain, having to pop like five ultimates to kill one hillichurl, to be able to just demolish swathes of enemies with Fischl and Diluc, run around like a madman thanks to Xiao, have infinite health idr who did that for me but bless them, just absolutely destroy.

Ever since I hit WL5 I haven’t been able to really just go insane during a fight and stop caring about HP/ when to use skills/ dodging and this have me that opportunity.

Zhongli’s Deal

*punches Zhongli across the room with the power of being the player character* I love this man so much.

Zhongli Zhongli Zhongli Zhongli Zhongli. I AM VERY ANGRY AT HOW THE PLOT RESOLVED HIS STORYLINE. But it also makes a lot of sense. And I think, for once, Zhongli should be allowed to be selfish.

Because choosing to leave Liyue was a bit selfish. He’s leaving the country that adores him, loves him, gives him shit for free; to its own devices and then to a completely unknown fate once the new Geo Archon becomes god and takes over. But he made a frankly fantastic plan and can now leave the country, for now, in peace.

I was absolutely delighted to see Zhongli in Morax form. Making deals with La Signora, being a complete and utter puppet master who set this entire situation up and played Childe like a kazoo; but just like his dear friend Venti, I think Zhongli is happier when he’s just Zhongli, the eccentric mortal. He seems so much happier and so much more relaxed when he’s forgetting about mora and eating dinner with Aether and Paimon. Rex Lapis might have just put Liyue through the wringer, but he can now put down his 3000- year long reign and just be the happy, eccentric Zhongli.

Zhongli’s little bit of insecurity over being a “bourgeois parasite” makes perfect sense now— he doesn’t want to be seen as Morax, a superfluous god who’s using his name to get whatever he wants from the humans he watches over.

But also the part of my brain that feeds off lore nEEDS to KNOW what Zhongli got from Tsaritsa. What could be worth a gnosis? His own happiness isn’t enough— Tsaritsa is likely going to use his gnosis to try and destroy Liyue. What could be worth that?

My main thought would be either “someone’s protection” or “another gnosis”, but I don’t think the latter is possible. The former could be possible but doesn’t really make sense either— a) whose protection is worth putting an entire country, much less the world, in danger and b) the Fatui are out to kill everyone who isn’t Fatui, so they won’t agree to spare a major player in the war to come like that. Brain go brrr.

I’m very hyped for Zhongli’s story quest, which I think is coming with his banner on Dec 1, when Childe’s banner ends. I really hope that Zhongli visits Mondstadt and chills with Venti for a while, but anything with this guy would be fine lol.

LORE

We got a lot of lore this update and I am delighted by it.

Firstly, we get a tiny hint of how Visions are bestowed— “if a person shows true strength of will at a desperate and fateful moment in their life, the gods will look upon them with favor.” Vague but more than we had before.

Next we got some neat lore about Inazuma— firstly, that it’s led by a god named Baal and secondly that it steals everyone’s visions. I’m very hyped to visit because guess what fam aether doesn’t have a vision.

Final Thoughts

In case you can’t tell from my insane ramblings, I loved Chapter 1 Act 3 and I absolutely cannot wait to play through Childe’s story quest and Chapter 2 and beyond.

The Prologue in Mondstadt set the stage for Genshin. We started out in a fantasy environment with a fantasy tale of an immortal bard and a dragon. Mondstadt was an excellent introduction to the world of Genshin.

And now? We’re starting to build on that. Chapter 1 brings us another story of another god and their relationship with the country they watch over. Liyue is much less of a traditional fantasy setting and takes the darkness we saw in Mondstadt— a friendship ruined by manipulation and suffering— and build on it. Now we don’t just see the Fatui more often but we also see more of the Treasure Hoarders and the way both groups kidnap and experiment on humans.

Mond started to introduce us to the Fatui, but Liyue is where they really start bringing continuous plot relevance. Inversely, we saw much more of the Abyss Order in Mondstadt than we did in Liyue. I’m extremely disappointed we didn’t see any more of the Princess this chapter, but it makes sense given that Chapter 1 was really more about the Fatui than the Abyss Order.

All I’m trying to say is the Liyue arc was an excellent continuation to the stage Mondstadt’s arc set. Now, we’re on to the world of the Eternal Shogun, Baal! I’m really excited to meet new characters and experience new stories of Inazuma, but I hope we’ll continue to see Mondstadt and Liyue in the future. Mondstadt is likely going to be the most “boring” of the countries we experience, cuz it’s just so classically fantasy- themed, but it will always be the first country we explored in this world.

After Inazuma (if I had to take a shot in the dark, inazuma’s arc will take from December 23 to maybe March or April) we’ll go to Sumeru, which I am really extremely hyped for because it sounds extremely different from Mond and Liyue and we’ll meet Cyno and possibly even Collei! (just me extrapolating lol). I can’t wait to see where Genshin Impact goes story- wise, because its first major update has brought so much to the table.

His eyes flicker from the distorted reflection of himself in the ice to where All Might is giving him a long look, eyes kinder than anything Todoroki has ever been deserving of, and he feels sick. “Todoroki-kun,” Midoriya says gently, squeezing his arm in what Shouto presumes is meant to be a reassuring gesture. “It’s going to be okay.” He doesn’t think Midoriya is in any place to tell him what okay is, all things considered, but he chooses to keep quiet on the matter.

Thus, Katsuki and Izuku part ways after junior high, as Katsuki enters U.A. and the Midoriyas move overseas. It’s later that Katsuki realizes that there’s something missing, that he drove that something away. Years after, Katsuki finds him in the last place he looks, in the cereal aisle at the local grocery store of their childhood neighborhood.

Although it is not well-received by those involved, Izuku Midoriya, current detective at the 78th precinct and loyal follower of captain Toshinori's ideals, believes that the operation will be a success. If his captain says it will succeed, there isn't a doubt in Izuku's mind that it will. That is until he meets his assigned Pro-Hero.

Etho is an immortal in the way that he will never die and bdubs is immortal in the way that he will always be reborn after death

Bdubs and Etho first met many millenia ago, when bdubs hadn't found out yet that he was immortal in a way. Etho had walked into a bakery in a village he was passing through to get some bread when he had met the man that was behind the wooden counter. :)

Etho was devastated when when Bdubs died. It always hurts when he loses people - and he's lost many over time. He'd like to say it gets easier, and some part of it does. But the pain never truly fades, just changes.

So, when several decades later, he came across Bdubs again he thought he'd finally lost it. This is it. He's finally lost his mind. All the years he's lived have broken him.

Except, he hasn't. This is Bdubs, somehow still baking. He sees Etho and lights up, pulling him towards the back of the store.

Bdubs recounts the story of how he came back! And he'd been looking for Etho, but decided to do something familiar until he found him.

Etho didn't know how much he'd been longing for someone he could keep in his life. And now he has the chance to make sure Bdubs, a newly discovered immortal, has the chance to never experience that loneliness.

Etho is an immortal, cursed by some ancient being to never die, to watch his loved ones pass on and never be able to follow them. But a kinder creature granted him a small reprieve, a special sense to locate his love’s soul across each life they live.

BDubs is a botanist who keeps wondering why this very attractive man comes into his shop every day. And why does he feel so familiar?

It hurts, it always hurts, to watch those he loves die. That every time, he has to wait. And every time, he meets a stranger.

He's thought many times about simply leaving it. Not continuing the cycle, letting his love live their own life. Who is he to control it? A few times he has. He's let them live, and he's let them die, without seeing them at all.

Usually, he fails. Being cursed into immortality doesn't stop him being human and like every human he wants to love - in some way - and give love in return. This is one of those lifetimes.

But, why did Bdubs know his name already?

Imagine you're a pair of mischievous twins, Grian and Pearl, and decide to wander through the woods one day. Stray from the path while foraging.

You come across the remains of... something. Maybe a tower, maybe a small part of a much grander structure long, long passed. It's full of statues of people. You explore, naturally. It mostly has sun access, being mostly broken. It's very easy to explore in full, being so small.

Imagine you hear a chorus of hissing.

Pearl hears it, recalls a legend and takes note of the statues, and tackles her brother to cover his eyes with her hat. Hisses at him to shut up when he squawks.

Now imagine you're Cleo, looking on at two people in your ruins. You know what they've assumed, and laugh a bit as you approach, catching the gaze of the younger twin. She goes stockstill.

Pearl gives a nervous hello. "We can leave now if we're bothering you," she adds.

Cleo struggles to explain that she carved the statues herself, and isn't cursed with a stone gaze. They do urge the two to stay while she thinks of how to start, asks them to come back even if they leave in the meantime, and maybe Pearl takes note of the invitation.

The person with the snakes for hair was beautiful, once Pearl realised she didn't have to be afraid of looking at her. The sunlight glinted off the scales and her golden jewellery alike. Green eyes stood out against her paler complexion. Even if she's not the myth Pearl expected, Pearl wouldn't be surprised if she were a myth of some kind. Nothing else could be that dangerously beautiful.

Grian, because of course he does, instantly picks up on her crush. Her brother is nothing but insufferable (she loves him really.) She makes sure to very quickly disregard every single piece of advice he gives her... Not that half of them constitute as advice to begin with.

So, she sneaks away so Grian can't bother her on her mission. What would the snake person like? Flowers, maybe? Pearl doesn't know. So, she takes what Pearl would like. One of her favourite rocks - a piece of opal that's polished to perfection. Everybody loves pretty rocks.

She can hear Grian teasing her already.

It takes her a little while to find that same path, wondering if she should mark it somehow next time. When she looks up at the ruins, she can see the remnants of carvings in stones. Worn with time, cracked and broken. But every bit as intricate as the statues within the walls.

A fellow artist. Pearl can work with that.

Cleo wasn't sure if they expected either of the twins to come back. Most people who wander through here don't. Though, they're not as welcoming to most. People nowadays don't know how to respect history. But, they spot the hoodied figure climbing over collapsed pillars, letting out soft noises as she slides down the other side.

Cleo laughs, striding across the half-tiled floor to greet her. Hopefully, they can make a better impression than last time.

Then Pearl grabs something from her hoodie pocket and thrusts it at them. A shining opal, glittering in the light of the sun. Cleo finds themself lost for words again. So much for that plan.

(theme yippie) immortality is a cruel mistress that joel is painfully familiar with. from being made out of terracotta by mother tree, to being gifted the promise of immortality by his own wife, he is not made to die and yet, the mezalean king died of heartbreak. see, that was the mezalean king, the ruler of mezalea and exporter of terracotta, moss and concrete. joel on the other hand, the first creation by mother tree, is very much alive, even if its been 1000 years since the rapture (not that he'd know. he's been in a sleep like state once the world basically flipped on his head, and his skin cracked. he never said heartbreak didn't have an effect on joel, just that he never died.) however, one day, he got up. he found a fountain, and he was repaired with godhood. his skin was mended, gold now webbing his no longer terracotta flesh. and he was reminded of the life he had a millennia ago. (joel never claimed to be a smart man. just that he was tall and sexy, and that he loved lore. so he fell in love again, however this time it was with a man named mythical sausage. it was his best mistake. (and oh how he adores that man. and that's not even mentioning sweet little baby hermes)) -tn (tldr i watched joels s1 semi-recently and have read one too many fics lmao)

He knows, deep down, it's a mistake to fall in love again. It broke him before, quite literally. But, Joel (as much as he pretends he isn't), is a bleeding heart. Who couldn't see Sausage smile, hear his laugh and his optimism for the future, and not be taken in by it?

Well. Lots of people, apparently, but that's besides the point.

Sausage treats nature with the same kindness and respect Joel used to hold the mother tree in, so many years ago. The world itself seems to come to his beck and call, and Joel can't blame it.

Hermes was a complete accident, and one he thought would scare Sausage away. Up until then it was just... Fooling around. Joel was still too afraid of commitment, Sausage was too afraid to push. But Sausage deserved to know about Hermes, even if that meant pushing Joel away. Instead, Sausage came even closer.

If Joel thought he couldn't fall in love anymore, he was wrong. Seeing Sausage play with Hermes - their child - he begins to understand why the heartbreak didn't kill him after all.

Keralis has been through alot, in his immortal life, and now he's just tired. He wants to live his own life, without people going after him thinking killing him will give them immortal life, without the constant thought of 'where to next?' And now he's found the perfect spot, its secluded, by the ocean, and a wide open spot where he can build the stuff he likes.

Though quickly, he finds himself with visitors (they don't ever seem to be hostile, thankfully) sometimes they come in groups, sometimes they're alone, but he takes the time to chat with them all.

The most recent visitor he finds very intriguing though, he's not a classic tall mysterious stranger (in fact he's probably on the shorter side) he's also in the worst kind of clothes for how warm it is in the sun, dark hoodie and pants, but he is very charming, with a wonderful little giggle and the way his tail (guardian, if he knows his hybrids correctly) sways when he walks. There's something special about him, and Keralis hopes this won't be the last he'll see of this 'xB' person. He hopes he isnt mortal either, he'd hate to not see this guy for the rest of his life.

He has all the eccentricities of somebody who's lived long enough to disregard mortal rules. But, Keralis knows not to judge too early. Assuming only makes an ass out of you and me, and Keralis has had his heart broken too many times for that.

What he doesn't expect is to visit the coast one day (he always likes to collect the pretty shells and rocks to trade with visitors) and find xB lounging in the shallow water. Keralis approaches out of concern at first. Has xB been injured? Did he wash ashore?

His questions are answered when xB blinks his eyes open at the crunch of Keralis's footsteps, rolling over to face him. He's decided to take up occupancy in Keralis's bay, he hopes he doesn't mind. It's a good job Keralis doesn't, because he gets the feeling that wasn't actually a question.

He watches as xB settles in, sticking mostly to the water. Keralis never built too close to the shore. The sand is a bad foundation, and the ocean is cruel to foreign and familiar things alike. xB seems to reside mostly beneath the waves, but frequently pops out to see Keralis. He's taught him some new ways to cook fish!

Keralis just wishes he could figure out how to phrase the question. How do you ask somebody if they're mortal or not without sounding insane?
