The Weekly Gravy #119
The Weekly Gravy #119
Mistletoe & Menorahs/A Merry Holiday (2019) – ** Since I’ve given up trying to watch my Hanukkah-request movies in the originally planned order, I’ve made a point of watching this particular pile of cinema in time for Christmas and the end of Hanukkah! I’ve done this because this film, as the title suggests, appeals to those who celebrate both holidays, though in practice, I think it only…

Thank you for so many prompts!! This was so fun to do and now it is so long. I hope it's as good to read as it was to write out!
1) Name the best book you've read so far this year: I answered Aftermarket Afterlife by Seanan McGuire to digs just a moment ago, but I'm glad you asked too, because honorable mention goes to Inheritance by Nora Roberts. It came out in November, not technically 2024, but time is fake and 2024 is just beginning anyway, so I'm counting it. Inheritance starts pretty slow and for a bit I was wondering how it was going to manage a satisfying resolution, and then I realized she was doing something new! (unfair. she's been building to this since 2015, it's just that now is when it's starting to really click with me) Instead of a trilogy with three couples whose romance arcs each get centered in their own book, this is going to be a trilogy focusing on unraveling the family curse/haunting, with the four main characters growing tighter as a unit (and forming their two romantic pairs, of course) throughout. I really like the characters and I am delighted by the curse/haunt storytelling. Cannot wait to see more.
2) Favorite fantasy book(s): this is so hard. okay, okay, brief rundown. brief. I can do this. bookshelf by bookshelf, I think. we'll take as granted everything by Seanan McGuire, sure. Bayou Moon and Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews. By the Sword and From a High Tower by Mercedes Lackey. Bryony and Roses and Summer in Orcus by T Kingfisher. The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane. The Long Patrol-Marlfox-Taggerung by Brian Jacques, which I always read in a shot as if they were one book. Similarly, the Protector of the Small and Magic Circle quartets by Tamora Pierce, and the Icewind Dale trilogy by RA Salvatore. Tangled Webs by Elaine Cunningham. The Return of the King by JRR Tolkien (really all the LotR trilogy, but even I cannot say I sit and read them all three straight through as if they were one). The Wee Free Men and Thud! by Terry Pratchett.
4) Favorite science fiction book(s): The Ship Who Sang and Dragonsdawn by Anne McCaffrey. Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie. Exit Strategy and Network Effect by Martha Wells. The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers. Rescues and the Rhyssa by TS Porter (also a favored queer fiction book, but I love the alien worldbuilding so much it has to be here)
8) Favorite queer fiction book(s): Humanity for Beginners by Faith Mudge. Nightvine by Felicia Davin. the Harwood Spellbook series by Stephanie Burgis (also a down-in-one-shot series). Holly and Oak by R Cooper.
12) Favorite horror book(s): I haven't read too many horror books, so my pool is limited here, but The Twisted Ones and The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher both gave me the shudders so bad.
15) Which genre(s) are your favorite? Fantasy! I love all the fantasy subgenres, and especially the magical realism overlaps.
17) Favorite finished book series: How finished is finished? A lot of my serieses are made up of several trilogy/quartet subsets together in a world. hmmmm. The Protector of the Small quartet again by Tamora Pierce, I think.
20) Where and how do you find new books to read? I mentioned in my reply to digs that I'm subscribed to a ton of newsletters, but I feel like I undersold their effect on me. I don't know how many I'm subscribed to--just sat here and off the top of my head counted to eighteen that post at least weekly and I'm so sure I'm missing some--and I love having that regular infusion of book progress and reviews and writing thoughts and commentary. I really do recommend that folks subscribe to their favorite authors.
26) Favorite novella(s): Silver Shark by Ilona Andrews. The Seven Brides-to-Be of Generalissimo Vlad by Victoria Goddard. Jackalope Wives by T Kingfisher.
32) Name your favorite author(s): massive overlap with everybody else I've listed here. who haven't I mentioned? Jennie Crusie, Jayne Ann Krentz, JD Robb (which is a Nora Roberts penname but they've got distinct enough works I want to list them out separate). Patricia Briggs, Patricia C Wrede, Max Gladstone, Gail Carriger, Nalini Singh. And Ed Greenwood, about half the time.
44) The book(s) whose stories have become part of your very makeup: The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien. Watership Down by Richard Adams. Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie. Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs. The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. Phoenix & Ashes by Mercedes Lackey. The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard.
46) I like (weird or genre-defying books), recommend me a book to read, please: First thought was the Humans Are Weird series by Betty Adams, though that might not be what you mean. They're intensely fun collections of 'humans are space-orcs' style vignettes. Maybe more directly books that are weird would be the Craft Sequence series by Max Gladstone and Hammers on Bone by Cassandra Khaw. Very toothy complicated magical realism. And my favorite genre-blending books are always the Elemental Masters books by Mercedes Lackey. A Study in Sable for instance is equal parts a Sherlock Holmes story and a retelling of The Twa Sisters fairytale, and also a coherent installment in an ongoing historical fantasy series about elemental mages in early 1900s England.
47) What are the last three books you read? Indexing by Seanan McGuire, Die in Plain Sight by Elizabeth Lowell, Pirate's Honor by Chris A Jackson
50) What kind of book have you never read but always hope to find at some point in the future? This is such a fascinating question. I don't know that there's anything in particular that I've always wanted and never found, but there are things I'm always looking for more and better examples of. I'm extremely picky about soulmate AUs, so a good one especially captivates me. Oh, or a really well-handled impromptu adoption! Child characters and bureaucracy are both tricky to write and things I know a lot about, and when they're done well they hook me so hard.

Sunset Arc 1 & SolCorp's Neptune Department
Tumblr media
(7/8 SolCorp department rundowns)
Neptune is in charge of SolCorp’s security, internal and out.
One of the most elite departments, Neptune employs some of the top agents in the Corp. Their friendly competition for most elite with the Saturn department can run a little hot.
Agents in other departments view them with a measure of respect and fear. They’re one of the only departments that have uniforms and a dress code. If someone is dressed in all black, they are most likely a Neptune agent, and Reintegration agents can be identified by their dove-grey coats.
Their Cleanup division protects knacked people from being discovered by the public by covering up any exposures.
Neptune’s Investigations division reviews internal misconduct.
The Retrieval division tracks down and apprehends Sol agents who have committed crimes or gone AWOL (SolCorp refers to these rogue agents as Icarus).
Reintegration is Neptune’s rehabilitation system meant to reform Icarus and return them to the company as agreeable, healthy, productive agents. Reintegration also conducts Integration on new, natural-born recruits, to help orient them to SolCorp’s world.
Notable Members Head of Neptune: Rich del Sol Rich is a telepath. He is in turns either completely serious or a little too humorous for what one would expect of Neptune. He’s held the position for a long time. Neptune’s Second (Reintegration): Fredericka del Sol Rich’s protege. Freddie began her career in Retrieval before switching to Reintegration, which takes a stronger stomach. She has a light manipulation knack. Neptune’s Fifth (Cleanup): Penn Harris Penn Harris joined Sol in his early teens and is an expert in keeping the public from learning about knacked people. He’s a telepath. Retrieval agent: Sage del Sol An agent who has no idea what is in store for him. His knack is sublimation.
Tumblr media
SolCorp is broken down into nine different departments, named for the nine planets. (Yes, nine. It was formed when Pluto was considered a planet and they aren’t about to get rid of their medical team to reduce it to eight.) The department heads are each based out of their Los Angeles Headquarters (LAHQ), though the departments have anchor offices across several international SolCorp locations.
Each department is led by the top five ranked officers: the department head (whose title is the name of the department) and their four assisting officers who run different divisions of the department. These four officers are referred to as Seconds, Thirds, etc.
The other departments' posts can be found here: Mercury | Venus | Terre | Mars | Jupiter | Saturn | Uranus | Neptune | Pluto |

yesss i’d think it’s be cool to have your thoughts on cillian’s music choices for that show
i haven’t really followed closely and i’d love to see a rundown/details about it/any thoughts whatsoever in whatever way you’ll want to present that!!
Cool cool! Wow! I’ve actually had a good bit of response and frankly didn’t expect anyone to be interested 😅 thanks for the encouragement/enthusiasm!
So it looks like I’ll start a weekly review! They come out each Sunday, so I’ll have a post at some point during the week (Saturday at latest). I’m prob going to listen to each show twice before offering thoughts.
Also, I’m a (predominantly) classically trained musician, so the way I listen to music is different from how Cillian listens, and frankly, that makes it extra fun! 😂

No Context Comics: A Look at 3 Books I Don't Read from the Week of September 6
There were a lot of comics this week. A lot more than last week! I wrote about several of them in other places. I did the main spotlight review for the new Image series KILL YOUR DARLINGS as part of the ComicsBeat weekly Wednesday roundup of indie books. I also shared some words for the Marvel Rundown on the Beat, where I’ll be joining the team of contributors on a regular basis. This week I had…

June is over and that means Japanese goals update! I focus a lot on short term goals in these updates, so at the end of June I thought I'd like to reflect on some more long term goals, aka where do I see myself going with this whole Japanese thing (at least for the rest of the year).
I integrate Japanese into my daily life to try to improve my skills daily, but I also have to keep in mind long term goals. Looking at both short term and long term study goals can help me to see where I am trying to go. If I didn't set goals and work on continuous improvement, I could still "get by" in Japanese, but I find that unless I actively seek out learning new things, I will just continue to use Japanese in only the contexts where I am comfortable. When I actively set long term goals, my Japanese improves in more tangible ways. I learn new vocabulary and grammar at a higher rate, I seek out articles or books that challenge me, and I turn off the subtitles on anime and realize I understand more than I thought.
I think about what the next level I want to reach with Japanese is, and then make a long-term goal (e.g. learn more kanji), and then break it down into smaller goals that I can make into daily habits (e.g. review known kanji daily, learn new kanji weekly). This way I feel less overwhelmed in terms of my long term goals. When Japanese becomes a daily habit it is less of a burden, and I also don't feel bad when I take some time off to refresh. So, without further ado, my long term goals for the rest of this year.

My Long Term Goals for the Rest of 2022
Daily
Consistent daily kanji flashcard review for known kanji
Active listening practice (dramas, anime, news)
Read picture books to my son, focusing on pronunciation and reading speed
Weekly
Kanji writing practice weekly for new kanji
Learn or review at least one grammar point a week
Reading practice weekly (articles, books, manga)
Write a couple sentences each week and have them corrected
Monthly
Read 2-3 Japanese manga or books, plus articles
Teach my son a new Japanese kids' song
Yearly
Finish reviewing/learning joyo kanji up to grade 6
Finish Sou Matome N3 Grammar workbook
Begin teaching my son hiragana
These are my goals for the second half of the year. Not many right? Even then I know that some of them I will probably not fully achieve, but having this list as a guideline to where I want to go is helpful. I won't punish myself for not meeting these goals or for falling off track when I am busy or not in the mood to study, but having these goals written out will help motivate me or push me in a direction when I am not sure what to study next.
As always, I'll do a quick rundown of my studies this month as well.
How I Studied This Month
Reviewed 5 kanji almost every day 〇
Learned several new kanji over the course of the month ✕
Actively listened to a drama or anime once a day 〇
Reviewed a grammar each week 〇
Read manga, articles, books once a week 〇
Wrote a couple of sentences in Japanese this month (no corrections) △
〇 = completed, △ = partially completed, ✕ = did not complete
Primary Study Tools/Methods
Kanji flashcards on Quizlet (my decks)
Drama (梨泰院クラス), Anime (コタローくんは一人暮らし)
Manga (極主夫道), NHK News
This discord server
YouTube (日本語の森)
What Were My Strengths?
Kanji review - If nothing else, I always have flashcards to practice with
Listening - I picked an anime that is easy to follow, and then listened to a Korean drama in Japanese which made it a little more difficult, but I still could follow the pace very well
Reading - Reading an article in the morning helps me start my day, and reading manga before bed is a nice way to unwind
What Were My Weaknesses?
Writing - I can't write quickly, which is frustrating when I'm trying to take notes. I also sometimes form very strange-sounding sentences when I am trying to write. I definitely need to get native speaker corrections.
Things to Try Next Month
Spend time working on handwriting
Written kanji review
Get my sentences corrected on Hi Native or somewhere else
Use my Sou Matome N3 Grammar workbook on a regular basis

Reviewing the All Elite Wrestling personnel 2023 Edition (Part 0) -
New to this? Please refer to https://dreadwhoop.tumblr.com/post/697331836428353536/reviewing-the-all-elite-wrestling-personnel-2022 to recap 2022 or understand what this is all about.
Tumblr media
Yeah. Where to start?
A brief rundown. Usually these go out around the anniversary of the weekly TV show AEW Dynamite. Here I'll ruminate the overview between last year and this year. After we'll address the roster's ratings and then who to PUSH or GET RID OF and then, if I can, some other factors to complete the annual review. This will likely be a lighter affair than the previous years since I echo the sentiments said before and, as a principled individual, don't like changing my mind once committed to an ideal - if it's good it's good if it's bad it's bad I'll continue regardless. Having said this, every time I publish a PUSH or GET RID OF list I never change the decision or repeat it so you'll always see new entrants. Anyways let's move on!
Tumblr media
Since last year we've seen the end of AEW Dark and AEW Dark Elevation and in return the inclusion of AEW Collision as weekly offerings alongside Dynamite and Rampage. The videogame AEW Fight Forever also released this year after significant delays which makes certain roster inclusions oddities as a result. By far though the most important day for AEW was All In at Wembley Stadium - their biggest event to date by far.
Tumblr media
AEW continues to find a measure of success in places, put on some notable matches, and effectively make 2023 the defining year where MJF is the major draw which is why it'll be a bad blow to the company upon his inevitable departure following the firing of CM Punk and loss of Jade Cargill, two names they built up strong, whilst keeping under contract even more names than ever before. Here's something to look over with the documentation done over these 4 years. If you regard official active wrestlers, we've gone from 79 in 2019-2020 to 108 in 2020-2021 to 132 in 2021-2022 to now 156 in 2022-2023. Rumours of Tony Khan buying New Japan Pro Wrestling, Shimmer, and other shows as he did with Ring of Honor only dillutes the waters further. Let's make one thing clear - you only have a roster this bloated if you expect them to get injured so you can substitute someone else in, talent be damned. Dante Martin took a bump which effectively renders his past career over whilst Jon Moxley took a nasty stinger and now both AEW's cornerstone and capstone are sidelined leaving Tony Khan to DANCE WITH GARCIA BABY LET'S FORGET THE BAD TIMES LET'S DANCE BABY!
Tumblr media
Moving on…
Tumblr media
This whole story with MJF and Adam Cole bromance better end with MJF and Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. being together and, for both their sakes, in WWE with her as his valet who wrestles too. MJF goes on about being a generational talent well it's only proven by having an incredible 2nd-generation talent with someone also talented especially after the botching of her 'abuse victim' T-Shirt. Anything less is fraud on the payoff and no don't feel sorry for Adam Cole because what they should of done with him was not what happened and instead has dragged MJF down to a level which insults the intelligence of its audience and his ability.
Tumblr media
I want people to direct their attention to Netflix's documentary on OVW (Ohio Valley Wrestling) and how, despite the distance in audience and finance, the same problems in OVW crop up in AEW: lack of new fans. Retaining an audience is one thing but genuine interest is floundering. It's also worth noting the only difference between the success and failure of a promotion is how much revenue it has - OVW could be given a billion dollars and achieve just as much success as AEW so keep it in mind - context matters. Mahabali Shera is great would love to see him in AEW doing well. I'd also recommend Hollyhood Haley J, if only to get her to catering to get a decent meal because she's painfully thin and understand why, but you'd have to steer her to get the best from what could be a huge draw - making her lean into saying Tammy Sytch is her hero, got 'a-head' using Al Snow to work her way up, and generally make her an outrageous antithesis to Toni Storm who wants to be regarded as a star whilst Haley wants to burn everyone like a star or Julia Hart who plays at the darkness whilst she breathes it. Neither will reach the platform of WWE without a proving ground like AEW to see how well they thrive with established talents. Like Brian Pillman Jr. and Dark Side of the Ring, they can't afford to miss on such opportunities given the buzz. Hire some talent from OVW Tony.
Tumblr media
Finally want to mention the series Markyd123 was doing on AEW was refreshing, as we need new takes, but of course the fanbase ran his interest off. Great job guys - let's continue to sabotage diverse voices whilst pretending we want diversity. As paraphrased by a relevant person to this conversation, you're either growing or you're dying. We'll see which AEW is come next annual review.

So I lost my job yesterday and while I know it’s for the best (because ooh boy constant anxiety and stress) things were kinda fucked how it went down and I just want to make sure I’m not crazy. Here’s the rundown (it’s long, sorry):
Accepted SM assistant role last August. Was upfront about having limited experience, mostly either with accounts that had no budget or having long steps to go through to get a post approved. Said I was primarily a social WRITER but could make simple graphics and what not because I can use Photoshop and Canva. Basically hit the ground running, had virtually no real training and vague instructions. I was also suddenly in charge of way more categories, some of which had their own separate pages on social platforms and I would have to be responsible for all of them. I started with 5 categories, three of which consistently had multiple weekly or monthly events that needed posts. I also had to help boost, do mild comment and message moderation, and live tweet well into late hours or over the weekend. After getting settled I took on more work because we were a small team and I wanted to be as helpful as possible. I ended up taking on a weekly filming task that meant filming and editing the video in less than a day’s time. It took time because I had mentioned I don’t have strong video editing skills but I was willing to learn and try my best.
In late January, I was hit with a surprise move. I was told I had to be out by March and it was a few days from February. I was scrambled. But I still continued to take on what I could while panicking about my living situation. I get the move scheduled to not cost me too much missed time in the office. I asked my manager if I could WFH the day before my move just to wrap things up and was told to come in. I complied.
All this time, I have never once been approached about my quality of work from my clients or my boss. In fact, I even received a glowing yearly review and told I’m doing wonderful and I work great with my clients. We did have one of my categories break off and essentially took over their own social media with an influencer. It came as a big shock but I tried to roll with the punches and keep working hard for my other clients.
Then we had a HUGE event, like all hands on deck kind of thing. Still not given a ton of direction just “make as much content for this event as possible.” So I did. Now, around the end, I was having some trouble in my life (worries about my health, parents, etc) so I was admittedly burned out. I dropped a few balls. Nothing bad happened, no social catastrophe or anything, just didn’t pay attention when reposting a post and didn’t realize it was a carousel and not just one photo. I used a photo by prof photographer from a preview party and my manager felt the angle wasn’t good and took it down. Then, after she talked to me and was wanting to offer to show me some tips and tricks which I was eager for. Then there was an issue with a department she had basically dumped on me with little explanation and told me to use artist bios and I used one from the artist’s site and apparently that wasn’t ok. I told her I’d definitely be much more careful.
Then, I asked our intern to post a video on TT to continue a series we had started. Our intern was out but told me she could post things no problem even when I voiced concerns. She posted the video and apparently there was a typo. My manager completely loses it in in Teams but worse yet, in a group chat with one of my coworkers. I had a panic attack and was trying to explain what happened, apologizing and taking the Ls and offering solutions. She demands a conversation the next day so I agree.
She realizes like late morning that she had berated me in front of our coworker and apologized. But we were still having our convo. In this talk she’s telling me suddenly that my work has only ever just been “ok” which is the first time I’m ever hearing this feedback. We had monthly one on ones and she Never. Said. Anything. But now suddenly I was a problem and I needed to reconsider things, see if this is the right position, and she said she’d work with me and I was like “ok. I’m going to improve, I’m not going to screw up like this again.”
So the process was I sent her the design and proposed copy of what I wanted to post and she’d give me feedback. She NEVER came to shoot with me or show me tricks or tips except like once near the end. Instead she started “not giving a fuck” Because she was getting demoted from director to manager and was mad about it. She started half assing things and even being really curt and rude to clients. Meanwhile, I’m busting my ass to create only the best with minimal to no direction or real advice but I was noticing improvement. Plus, my clients were so happy with the work I was creating and how I was working with them.
I had another one on one and she tells me I’m doing great, she’s happy to see me taking everything to heart, etc etc.
This continues and other than one misunderstanding, I thought everything was great! I was doing more with video editing and really trying to make dynamic designs.
This month comes around and we’re suddenly hit with three BIG events in one of my categories, all happening at the same time, two events in one of my other categories, and I had also agreed to take one one other category which had weekly events as well. That meant for this month I ended up having 10 events to promote. We also lost our ability to boost ads so everything was relying on purely organic engagement. I made assets, I tried to balance posting with the three big events because they all had to post on the same IG/FB page. I didn’t want any one to be out shined and wanted to make sure the page didn’t seem spammy with so many posts each day because my other coworker also had two categories that shared the same page. So A LOT was being posted.
We have a meeting and someone asked if we were posting about a specific collection on social. We said yes, for sure. Because I had been posting. Then he continued on to say that he knew the lack of bids was just because this collection had way too high prices. Didn’t say anything else about social or our posts.
But my manager messages me basically berating me for not posting enough and why the fuck wasn’t I working hard. I was like ???? And explained my reasoning and immediately got told I was wrong and I had ten days to get posts up to three per event per day. So I proceeded to bust my ass.
Now, here’s the thing, I couldn’t post if she didn’t review my stuff. So I sent her all these posts to hit this new goal annnnnnnnnnnnd I got nothing back. For a day and a half. I had to ask for them three times before finally getting the feedback. But I still kept working. Then I unfortunately got food poisoning.
BUT because we had our new director starting, I took pepto and sipped on ginger ale so I could make it into the office. And I did. I did wind up leaving early but I had still been creating work and sending it.
However, because I suppressed my food poisoning the next day I was MISERABLE. So I finally decided to take the day. I sent my manager a message and hear nothing back so I make sure all my shit is handled and ended up having to do a whole video while feeling like death. But I did it.
I still had things ready and scheduled so I at least would be good to go. Now, in the afternoon my manager finally messaged me only to try and yell at me about a post my other coworker had done. She did say “apologies” and then asked if I’d be in the next day. I said I was going to do everything I could do I wouldn’t fall behind.
The next day, I did go in. A few hours later she suddenly showed up (she doesn’t work in office on Fridays). I’m working on some stuff, I had already sent her some things to approve, and she suddenly messaged me asking if I had a sec.
And that’s when she walked me to a conference room that HR was in. I even asked her if everything was ok while we were walking and she was like “mmhmm”
They didn’t let me pack my stuff, I had to ask my friend to get my things. They tried to be like “this isn’t a firing for anything bad…you just weren’t the right fit.” And my manager kept saying “we had all those discussions” but I’m over here like ?????? We’ve had maybe TWO and one was THIS WEEK!!! And it takes more than a day, hell a week, for HR to process a firing. I had formal write ups and yet I was done.
I’m so mad and also scared and just ugh. Fuck Capitalism, fuck that lying bitch, and just…fuck my life.

DIY REM pod initial build (Learning Things: March 27, 2023)
Tumblr media
On Friday, I wrote about how I wasn't quite ready to attempt the DIY rem pod build, but then I ended up doing it anyway. More on that below!
Like I mentioned last week, I want to use Mondays to talk about things I've been learning, researching, and making. I might also include links to articles and other things that I've been consuming over the last week, though sometimes, like today, I'm mostly going to leave that out. The post was getting a little bit long with everything included. (I have an inkling that I might start doing a weekly roundup type post. We'll see.)
As a reminder, the biggest buckets of skills I'm learning, research I'm doing, and personal projects I'm working on are (in no particular order):
paranormal research for my podcast
building up skills (soldering, building electrical circuits, basic coding) to make DIY projects, including some ghosthunting gadgets I want to make
incorporating my art into paranormal investigation
getting a novel into publication- or submission-ready shape.
I don't expect to necessarily make progress on all of these things every week, but I do like the idea of having a check-in. Process is important. In creative work, people see is the final product, and not all the many stumbles and invisible work that it takes to get there. I always love seeing things about people's projects and progress!
So here's what I've got into this week:
Paranormal research
After taking a bit over a month off, I'll be dropping a new episode of the podcast this week. I hate to have taken so much time off, but things have just been incredibly hectic lately. (Though some of that was due to a cool, currently secret upcoming project!)
Anyway, for the next episode, I got to do some fun research about airships, which you'll see crop up in both the episode this week and a blog post.
DIY REM pod project
Last week, after writing so extensively about how I wasn't quite ready to undertake the DIY REM pod build, I ended up being too excited about it and going for it anyway. I'm happy to report that it was easier than I thought it was going to be. There didn't seem to be any faulty components in the kit that I got. It worked despite my shoddy soldering skills.
I'll do a better writeup of this project once I've actually finished it off with a new antenna and housing. But here's a quick rundown of how it went.
It took me about an hour and a half to do the assembly and soldering. I still want to upgrade the antenna and put the device into some sort of housing. But for this initial attempt, I just did the build exactly according to the instructions, so right now, I've got a little circuit board with a wobbly antenna and a row of LEDs (as shown in today's drawing).
I found the directions simple to follow. It was a single page of drawings showing where in the circuit board each component went. It also included some helpful reminders about which components are polarized. Honestly, minimal instructions are ideal for me—my eyes glaze over anything too complex—so I was pretty pleased.
The tricky part for me was just the soldering, because I'm not great at it. I especially struggled with soldering the chip sockets, because the prongs were close together and I kept accidentally bridging the solder. (Also, my left hand is very shaky, which kept throwing me off. I have a ways to go to improve my soldering technique.)
I had to reheat and fix the bridging a few times, which ended up adding some time to the build. But still, for my second attempt at soldering, I'm happy with the amount of time it took me.
Some of the reviewers said that the circuit board was really sensitive to heat and that it was easy to burn the circuit board. That might be the case, but I guess I managed to avoid it. I cranked up my soldering iron to about 560 degrees Fahrenheit and it seemed to be fine. I'm not sure what the ideal temperature would be for this project, or what temperature might be too much for the board. (On the package, my solder says it melts at 430 F, but at that temperature, it just wasn't melting right—probably because it's unleaded. I don't feel comfortable using leaded solder, but I do know that means that it's a little more frustrating to work with.)
In terms of operation, so far I'm noticing that the REM pod is a little finicky. Aside from the antenna issue that I mentioned, in general, a lot of the time when I initially plug it in, it goes haywire. Then it either settles down and acts normally, or it keeps going off. In the latter case, I just unplug the battery, plug it back in again, and then it seems like it works fine.
It was also immediately obvious that the antenna needs to be replaced. The existing antenna is extremely wobbly and flimsy, and it seemed to be setting itself off at first. But once I straightened it out, it worked okay. (But not great.)
I posted a video of me testing it out on instagram, if you want to see it in action.
All in all, I'm very happy with this as an initial foray!
Art and paranormal investigation
I haven't done a ton of automatic drawing, but in my most successful foray to date, I put an electronic track on repeat, blindfolded myself, and then drew. The results were pretty interesting, so that's something I want to continue to play around with.
Last Friday, I stumbled across an album that might serve as an interesting soundtrack to automatic drawing: Satie - Fragments, a compilation of electronic remixes of Eric Satie's work.
Satie was a composer and pianist who lived in the late 19th and early 20th century. I hadn't been familiar with his work, but when I listened to the album, I recognized some of his stuff immediately. (I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to classical music, but one of my favorite YouTubers used Satie's Gnossienne No. 1 as background music to a video a few years ago. And I am a very attentive viewer of YouTube.)
Interestingly, Satie seems to have had some occult connections. For a time, he even did some composing for a the Rosicrucian group he belonged to. I haven't done a ton of research about him, but I really want to dive deeper into his work and his life. Seems like he was a weird dude.
At any rate, I found these electronic remixes of his work completely enchanting and haunting. They seem perfect for setting a trancelike mood for an automatic drawing session. So that's something I'm putting a pin in for later.
Novel writing
Back in December, I wrote the first draft of a queer solarpunk fantasy romance novel very loosely inspired on the story of beauty and the beast. I started editing it in January, but then I had to pause when things got hectic. I finally had a chance to get back into the editing process this week.
I'd done an initial edit of the first 80% or so of the book, and this week I edited maybe another 5-10% of it. The finale needs an enormous amount of work and basically just has to be rewritten, so it's been slow going. This is very obviously going to be the second of many drafts (as it should be).
I'm a speedy writer (it took me about 34 hours to write the ~50,000-word first draft). But I'm a slower editor, in particular because I write fairly rough rough drafts. Also, in the case of this book, I made some pretty major changes to the main antagonist very late in the process of drafting it, and I still haven't quite worked out all of that character's new motivations and backstory, so I definitely have my work cut out for me there.
This week it was really nice to get back into the flow of editing it. As often happens when I walk away from a project and then return to it, I like it more now than I did when I left it. It's easy to get frustrated looking at your own work, and it's easier to see the good and bad after a little bit of time away from it.

Colony Workshop March Newsletter--- February really flew by quickly this year! Here's a quick rundown of what I've been drawing 🦋 This month I've been hard at work reviewing the first chapter of Colony: Rise of the Monarch. I posted an update in January with some linework and I should have another ready soon. Looking back on the episodes I sketched out over the past two years has given me some perspective on how much I've learned and all the things I'm doing better at towards the end. I had hoped to make a few changes to the earlier episodes but as I look back I can see the value in what I've already written and I think it'll do just fine. Most of the updates I'll be posting will be short updates to Patreon but I'll tease a few panels on social media ahead of publishing episodes. Between working on this webseries I have been making a start on the next batch of Patreon Reward drawings! I actually have a couple left to finish from last time as well, so these should keep me busy. It's always a nice break from drawing my bugs. A chance to try drawing something new and a great way to show my gratitude to everyone who has helped to support Colony and my weekly drawings! 🐝 This month's newsletter header is one of my favourites- 'Fallen Log'  from January 2022.

Comics Beat Review: Amazing Spider-Man #44 Gang War Finale
Big thoughts from me on Amazing Spider-Man that go well beyond just one issue of a comic book. Read it on The Beat’s weekly Marvel Rundown.
