I’ve been reflecting and processing today’s episode

CW: suicide and self harm

I think it always would have been controversial

Even with the proper trigger warnings (seriously, damn you Crunchyroll and/or RT for your utter failure on that front)

But Im not sure the story they’re telling would work without it

Especially after 9 volumes of tragedies and Ruby blaming herself for every single one

Not being able to get the support she needed at any time

Not to mention what the fact this is something real war veterans face

It gives us a very hard lesson about rooting for violence, no matter how “necessary” it is

As well as anyone who was excited about witnessing Ruby’s breakdown

When they should have been wishing her help

It also shows just how destructive to uncritically idolize characters that live lives of violence as Ruby did, and as many members of western audiences do

Sacrifice and violence *can’t* be requisites for heroism

And…I do appreciate that this is an extreme subversion of the heroic sacrifice, something we’ve been trained to celebrate

Ruby doesn’t get a badass Tony Stark style heroic sacrifice

This forces us to reckon with what we tend to root for when it comes to our fictional heroes

But shit that trigger warning was so pitiful

Like, its remarkable they’re not worried about getting sued levels of pitiful

Wanna give a quick shoutout to the federal judge last week who struck down the Arkansas law that tried to outlaw gender-affirming care for minors, not only ruling it unconstitutional, but including 311 statements of fact all going against the gender-affirming care ban in a ruling that was 80 pages long. Especially since these statements make it harder for transphobes to appeal and iirc this is considered precedent.

Love that Oppenheimer is a deeply disturbing horror movie about a man forced to accept that he is, in a person, the representative manifestation of mankind’s evil in committing one of the greatest horrors of human history - LITERALLY acting as the modern Prometheus, tormented by his sins for the remainder of time. Knowing that he will never be pitied and his actions will forever be utterly unforgivable because the blood of genocide and the potential of total human annihilation will eternally drip from his hands.

But also the simultaneous indictment by the film that to blame a single person for the Manhattan Project is to refuse to accept your own capacity for great evil if the ends ever seem to justify the means, and the culpability of every member of a species that lets itself create something so unspeakably terrible.

Hate that twitter’s take on such a nuanced and brilliantly handled examination of those issues is “movie bad because protagonist not evil enough.”

I just remembered that up until 5th grade, all of the sports teams I was in weren't separated by gender. I played basketball and baseball with boys. And we did just fine.

It wasn't until 6th grade when they segregated it by gender. It didn't make sense to me. I was now in softball because of baseball, because "softball is for girls" and "baseball is for boys" (which confused me bc my dad was on an adult softball team).

Now, my brother's all-male team didn't win a single game. My all-girls team won every single one.

They presented the boys' team with this HUGE trophy, and if you wanted replicas of it, they were $30 each.

My team was presented with a very small trophy. Extras were $5.

That's when I decided gender-segregated sports were bullshit.

No, y'know what? I love Season 2. I thought there was nothing wrong with Season 2 until I saw folks on here complaining about Season 2. I don't even care about the changes they might or might not have had to make, or the occasional pacing issues (Season 1 has pacing issues too, in places, but it's still great!).

THIS was the season that changed me. THIS was the one that made me go "huh, I need to think more about who I am."

Really tired of all the various caveats of "if only..." and "well, if Max hadn't..." and "this plot would've worked better..."

No. I love it. If it has to end there, I'm glad that's where it ends. I'd love to have more, but this worked so fucking well.

i think western celebrity worship culture is such a strange prison. Free yourself. You will become an entirely different person if you just let go of these people who will never care about you, about us as a whole. Go for a walk. Read a book. Paint, dance, forget about them. go watch a foreign film. go watch an old film or an indie film from a director you've never heard of. Look at all the different faces. Find peace in the fact that you recognize none of them.

I feel like we don't appreciate chill fics enough. Everyone gets really excited over plot twists and lore and theorizing, but sometimes I think we should also stop and appreciate the moments when nothing is going on. Moments when characters are just talking and hanging out and having fun.

I love you fics with zero plot points. I love you fics where everything is okay and the characters can just enjoy the fact that nothing important is going on. I love you fics where the characters have time to talk out their feelings on the smallest things together. I love you fics where some characters just watch a familiar movie or play a familiar game together. I love you fics where a character goes to great lengths to put something special together just for the sake of it, and it goes exactly as planned if not even better. I love you fics where the characters set a goal in mind and work towards it slowly with no major setbacks or upsets.

Pro writing type people argue that every story needs a conflict, but you know what? Sometimes I think they don't, actually. Pedantic people might argue that "well wanting to throw a birthday party is a conflict" or "well the fact that they have emotions they want to talk about is a conflict" but I'm gonna say it, no it isn't. That's not a real conflict, they are not fighting anything, they are just vibing and it's okay it's okay to just vibe sometimes.

I love you cozy fics, I love you fics where after healing from their trauma everyone can finally live their best lives, I love you 'pointless' fics where the characters can just exist. I love you, fanfictions.
