2022 Year End Fic Review

in the words of a very ancient internet joke, better nate than lever!!

1. What is your AO3 account?

My ao3 is lookatallthemoresigive, because that was my tumblr url at the time i created my ao3. I desperately need to change it but I'm having trouble coming up with a new one and am worried if i switch I'll lose brand recognition, which is hilarious bc my MO is to write a fic or two for a fandom and then bounce

2. How many words did you write total in 2022?

I wrote 8,487 published words, but i have at least 7k unpublished. There is a very long rangshi capture the avatar au that been languishing in my drafts for over six months that im hoping to finish up and post this year. I am not a particularly fast writer because i obsess over every word i use, but I've found that with practice im getting faster and better at writing more

3. How many fics did you publish in 2022? How many multichapters vs oneshots?

I published 4, which is about my usual (a couple of random scattered fics + yuletide). They're all oneshots of varying length. My new years resolution is to write 5 fics this year!! I'm holding myself to it. One day I'll write a complete multi-chapter fic, but it's not currently in the cards.

4. What was your longest fic? Your shortest fic?

Longest: a kyoshi novels fic about hei-ran, 바늘 구멍으로 하늘 보기

4,441 words that i agonized over, including the title. I'm super proud of this fic.

Shortest: your hair never falls in quite the same way, a locked tomb missing scene fic clocking in at 890 words.

I honestly had a pretty quick turnaround time writing this one. After i had a lovely and overwhelming response to a rangshi drabble in 2021, I've been trying to be better about posting fics regardless of their length. Sometimes, hitting 1k or even 500 words is not necessary to tell a story

5. What was your most popular fic? Your least popular fic?

Most popular: kiss you too hard and follow you west another quick turnaround, this is a rangshi fluff fic so i’m not surprised

Least popular: Shinrin-Yoku, my gen character study yuletide fic for a video game that came out in 2020. I'm not losing any sleep over it. Its currently at a 15% kudos to hits ratio which good!

6. What fic didn’t perform as well as you thought it would?

Listen, I died on some weird hills last year (the love interest’s mom needs more of a backstory!!!!), so any response is a good response. I guess I was secretly hoping your hair never falls would usher in an era of camilla/nona fics bc i was certain it was going to be a thing, but the book came out and crushed those dreams. I still maintain nona had a crush on cam!!

7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would?

바늘 구멍으로 하늘 보기 because as I mentioned above, it was a character centric fic focused on a minor character. glad the kyoshi novels fandom appreciates milfs!

8. What was your favorite fic you wrote from 2022?

This is turning into a whole arc. I love the nona fic dearly, it makes me happy every time i read it, but im so proud i pulled off that hei-ran fic. Writing a character arc is not easy or as instantly gratifying as making two characters kiss. I knew I was pouring my heart (research into ancient Korean tea ceremonies for half a scene! Politics! Asking @funnefatale to bug fandom friends for Korean sayings for me!) into a work that simply might not be received. Also, I finally came out to my mom around the time i was writing this for unrelated reasons, and this fic reminds me of that 💕

9. What was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022?

by land, by sea, by dirigible, @firstelevens' amazing c&d/tfatws fic which gave me everything i needed for BOTH shows. A two for one, can you believe!!

falling (for you) like snow on christmas, a warrior nun ava/bea hallmark au. I watched a lot of hallmark type christmas movies last year, and this fic delivered on the coziness these movies provide and the chemistry they usually don't. Also, it relased daily during the week leading up to christmas, corresponding to the days in the chapters, which was super fun to experience in real time.

long winded wank

i think the whole *gestures around me* situation is making me more irritated about this than i should be, but i'm just looking for some comfort fics and it sucks that i just exited out of 5 different ones.

i love all mxtx novels, but sv does hold a special place. and for the whole /three/ first years that i've been in the fandom, everything was FINE. it was great. people wrote whatever they liked and i could read fics about characters from sv. you know. the novel i love.

but somewhere during 2022, a few very popular authors came up with their own oc, and they also called him 'luo binghe', and he was a personalityless doormat (who of course yearned to bottom... maybe because of this mentioned doormat status? or because he's the student? who knows, theyre being ~progressive~)

and the whole fandom collectively adopted this oc so i cant avoid him no matter what i filter out. it legit made me have the thought 'i wish ao3 had a dislike button', like i'm some sort of villain lmao (so sticking to this rant is better)

not to mention sy lol. every time i try in good faith to read a fic where he doms, i just cant take it seriously. a fic tried to pull a 'he unreliable-narrated himself into domming accidentally' and even that was painful to read. you know that post, 'a good author can awaken things that were otherwise hard nos?' well turns out, no they cant! poor sy.

and one last rant:

a fic had something to the effect of 'oh silly shizun and his silly conceptions around sex' (about wanting lbh to top. this feels. just a tiiiiny bit infantilizing.)

and like. actually, why are they silly? i get that he /is/ repressed and reading the core novel gave him certain expectations before all his assumptions were turned on their head at the end of canon.

but it just reminds me of when i pitched sv to my sister which went:

-> me: so MC reads a novel about an undefeatable hero with a harem, then dies and /transmigrates/ into that novel as the villain! -> her: so he decides to become top dog, defeat the hero using all his knowledge, and seduce all his women to gloat? -> me: no????????????

sy could've done a million things differently but chose this route.

and sy could've originally formed any fantasies, he read so much, and it was strongly implied that he read BL. if he fantasized about being an alpha top, we'd know. he wouldn't have even entertained the thought of being fucked even as a poison cure. he would've thought about idk, giving binghe a sex-changing flower so it'd work, or w/e

i wish there were more fics exploring sy's actual possible repressed fantasies, than going the complete opposite of his character. the only ones i know of are modern au cumplane iirc (and a couple where sy's cosplay makes it possible for him to roleplay what he wants)

if people want to read power imbalance top!teacher/bottom!student then to each their own. but that's fanon. that's specifically not the novel. which is the whole reason i read and enjoyed sv. this sucks.

Tell me about one of your fics you think is underrated/underappreciated. that would the magnetic affection duology ( electric kiss + static touch ). it combines the fandoms of fifty shades of grey and the tv series mr robot. also the series i'm currently writing on, which is the last book in that duology; static touch. it takes up topics such as government vs privacy, terrorism and also how toxic romances can be extremely destructive in wrong hands. i do not shy away from taking up topics such as american imperialism, how far people are willing to gain high social rank, and how mental illnesses plays into all this. 11. Share a favourite comment a reader has left you.

Joey! You know he was one character I found myself oddly attached to for someone we only really saw like once before everything went to hell. I remember I replayed the game like twice before I figured out it was him doing the creepy whistling all the time, but I honestly think I felt bad for him. He never wanted to go out into the field, was completely content being behind his desk all day, and then he was one of the very first to die. But now he’s here! Which I’m still highly suspicious of because sir aren’t you supposed to be dead? Is he already infected? So many questions! I’m really excited for what’s to come. I think I said this last time but you’re great with building up a certain atmosphere, and there’s something about the way you write your descriptions of the monsters that really puts me on edge. ”Its long legs spider-like, a big head, and what appeared as fucking wings on its arms.” I think I got so desensitized from replaying the game that I truly forgot how terrifying these things and the situation they’re in are. I’m reminded once again I’d never want to see them in real life, let alone a cave with no exit in sight. And then there’s Jason hearing voices? We got confirmation that the creature he met in chapter one definitely isn’t the one chasing them now and I’m so curious as to when it’ll make another reappearance, but in the meantime who is this Alpha and who’s speaking? Was that Jason understanding the clicks for a second there? Or something else? 😂 See I told you I had a lot of questions. Until next time! What's your most popular fic? that's stay frosty ( pairing jalim, if i recall shipping name right, aka jason kolchek x salim othman ) on ao3 with its 1,940 hits, 99 kudos, 17 bookmarks, and 27 comments. the fanfic is unfinished, i plan to get back to it at some point. but i've people on wattpad who has waited far longer on my stucky, hannigram, and merthur fanfics. i've always the rule of prioritizing the people who has waited the longest so they don't feel ignored and it has functioned pretty well thus far. on wattpad, my most popular fanfic is the first fanfic i ever wrote ( which is also completed on ao3 as well ) that's called incarnation with the destiel pairing. the original idea was to write two separate AUs; rockstar and god verse. i decided in the end to combine both. it has a happy ending even if its major character death for all main characters. it will make sense if you ever read it yourself, why that is the case.

On a more comical expression of frustration in the serious Depth Mode tags Certain cc's, could you please stop making questionable decisions? Even if you don't care about behaving decently, the artists among the fandoms your connected to would probably like to draw the characters you play without feeling sinful. On the more serious side... c'mon man, I know there's the argument that their late friend would've found it funny but imagine trying to make a speech about your departed son in this event being done in their memory only to get interrupted in the middle of it by people playing airhorns. To be fair I lack too much of the specifics on who did what but brain just kinda got reminded of other issues I have. Admittedly I wouldn't be surprised if there's some personal stuff making me react this way,I have lost loved ones to cancer, but even then, it seems distasteful. Might try and alter things, I'm considering changing the superhero warlock AU into an original story and try and disconnect the characters, especially Jubilant, from their cc's, because the conflict of "I've grown invested in this character" and "I'm a despicable human being for drawing an AU version of the character this person plays" is kinda tearing me in half despite my attempts to separate c from cc.

Apologies for the ramble, I hope I haven't scared anyone away, I don't hate anyone simply on the grounds for liking the creators of their content. Feels like a weird middle ground to walk sometimes, having a negative view of a popular content creator and not wanting to just immediately be told "Oh you like this, you must also like this content creator, you must also be evil" whilst still trying to keep the blog something open to everyone in the fandom, maybe it's a futile goal, but I'm gonna try anyways. I applaud those who are better at separating the characters from the content creators than I am, and I hope they continue to make wonderful stories. I'm just not sure if I'm fully able to right now.

Au fanfic is, a good chunk of the time, kinda shit, or at least mostly mediocre.

It makes sense statistically, since the dsmp fandom is so big it makes sense that most writers within the fandom are amateurs, so it's best to look for good fics by seeing what fics are preferred by the fandom, kinda like democracy. But unfortunately democracy has failed us in real life and in fandom, or at least it failed to live up to my probably contrived standards cause majority of popular fics I found... Lackluster.

Fun wise they're chill, but writing wise? Nah, it's like smoking. It smells nice, but it got no substance.

I'm not talking about canon adjacent au fics (though most do suffer from the same problems), I'm talking about super hero aus, vampire aus, modern aus, foster aus, and the dreaded Mafia aus, cause always, ALWAYS, they just shoe horn in the characters into certain archetypes because actually considering the personality types you're dealing with , and themes, locations, backgrounds, that's all too much work and risks going off the au model, cause some characters just wouldn't act the way they are characterized to act in popular au fics.

Like that Carson guy? I don't follow em anymore cause I think they got shit opinions on music (no offense) but they recently made an essay on foster aus that has been making the rounds, and you know what? They're right! It's all just trauma porn. Just trying to squeeze emotions outta ya for none of the work.

It kinda reminds me of the fuck ton YA novels that got quickly published during the YA boom, not really aiming for a message or a theme, just aiming to capture the audience's attention.

Like, okay, this may sound like I'm just not a fan of anything that doesn't stick to canon but that's not the problem here. My favourite au fic is Devil Town, I loved it so much I would put it just about next to Night in the Woods in terms of writing (though I do feel like Devil Town would have benefited from a slightly bigger word count since some parts felt a bit too fast but I think that's just my subjective prefrence for slow as shit stories so I won't hold it against the fic), and in there techno VERY MUCH DOES NOT act like canon techno.

Like I thing that differecates it for me is like, does the author care or do they just want to have fun and I'm just taking this too seriously? Like is this fanfic gonna be a 3year long relationship or just a quick hook-up. And who knows maybe I should stop looking for 3 year old relationships in via quick hook-ups, but idk man idk.

Maybe I should just stop holding fanfiction to the same standards of published novels? Ehhh, probably, but that's ain't gonna stop me from frowning at mediocre fics like a cat frowns at cat food served in a bowl rather than a plate.

Ngl, I completely disagree here.

Not necessarily on the fact that most fics aren't masterpieces of modern literature or something, but more with your whole idea that they should be.

That's literally not what fanfics are there for. They're there for people to have fun with characters they enjoy. And AU fanfictions are just the same, take some characters you like and put them in a setting you want to explore. As long as it entertains you as the writer that's literally all you need.

And, you know, even if the writing isn't air-tight that doesn't really matter at the end of the day, because it's still good practice for those who want to make something more of it, or simply a nice pastime for people. It doesn't need to be.

I genuinely think that by trying to look for something in fanfiction that fanfictions inherently aren't you're kinda only setting yourself up for disappointment. It's like eating a chocolate cake looking for a strawberry taste and then complaining that the cake tasted of chocolate and not strawberry. Kinda your own fault there.

Also, I don't know who Carson is, and I'm not familiar with their post, so I can't comment on that, but if the premise is that "foster aus are just trauma porn" I'm gonna say that I'm guessing they haven't read many of them, especially since for most of them the main focus is on comfort and found family, and just putting characters who are heavily traumatized in canon in another setting where they've experienced similar things (bar the dying part of course).

Of course, I'm not saying that you're not allowed to not enjoy fanfics, of course you are. But from the way you talked about it, it kinda sounds like Fanfictions are not what you're looking for in the first place, and complaining because they don't meet the standards of published novels is a tad bit silly I'll be honest here...

teehee if you’re feeling like starting a conversation here. any fanfic that uses blatantly inaccurate information about the ccs pretty much makes me fully lose immersion. like some fics i will check when they were published and if it was mid-to-late 2020 and certain info wasn’t known yet, i will cut them some slack. but like sometimes i’m just like. you wrote this in like october 2021 and yet george and dream are made to be avid coffee drinkers when they both have stated they dislike it. or you’re making them drink alcohol when for dream it’s a borderline boundary and george has stated he just doesn’t really drink. it’s such small details but my brain is like That’s Not Right and can’t get past it. also can we move past characterizing george as this poor little submissive meow meow who won’t communicate or speak up for himself when it’s very obvious that is not at all his personality. + i will die on the hill that dream is 100% the more introverted awkward one. george isn’t an extrovert by any means but from stories they’ve told he’s definitely more than dream is. yet fics have it backwards constantly. anyways i must constantly remind myself that they’re not crossing anyone’s boundaries and it’s all fiction for a reason and they do this for free so they can write whatever they want blah blah blah but it still makes finding good fanfic like a needle in the haystack that is the dnf ao3 tag

i do wanna talk a bit about this. i'll firstly say personally i consider Dream asking his close friends to not make drinking/drug jokes about him as a boundary. if he doesn't like Sapnap saying he drinks I don't think fans should be writing about him drinking. but i digress

when it comes to aus i will ignore some things. like dream doesn't like soccer it doesn't mean i don't love the fuck out of leigh @sotgnf's soccer au

dream is very outgoing and charasmatic but yes very introverted. george seems more shy but genuinely gets energy from being around people so more extroverted. i remember george taking the mbti thing and getting almost a 50/50 split on introverted extroverted.

but things like yes Dream drinking coffee or drinking alcohol. George being the one to cook all the food. George not being colorblind. George being a bookworm when the only books he says he's ever really liked are Harry Potter. That sort of thing breaks my immersion pretty fast and i'm like hmm

idk it's like they didn't even try to expand their writing horizions and are just writing the original story they want knowingly this fandom is very popular and active right now.

but then again one of my favorite dnf fanfics right now is something i generally hate that being a high school au and also involves george being very open with his emotions and soft. it's ooc and i think everyone knows that doesn't mean i don't like the story.

and no george would probably never wear a skirt but if you wanna put that in your horny fanfiction honestly it doesn't effect me in anyway

i'm not writing anything atm since i'm considering different story ideas and which one to go with, but i'm really excited about all of them so yeah!! one of them in particular is based on a trope i've never written before, and honestly i'm surprised no one has done it in the fandom (as far as i know, at least) because it's a very popular trope and i'm like?? guess i'll do it myself then

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

there are some things that almost made it in All's Well That Ends Well and ended up being scrapped instead, but i can't say anything about them because there'd be huge spoilers to the story lmao

however i can say something about Terra Incognita. it's not really an alternative plotline (i had a clear idea of what i wanted the plot to be), it's just something about the intensity of alex's reaction to the thunderstorm. he was originally supposed to have a much more extreme reaction, but in the end i decided against it because in my head i still wanted it to be a relatively light fic. i mean, he definitely wasn't having a Great Time TM in the version i ended up posting either, but i'm glad i went with this route instead of the other

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

i love love love putting in random bits of trivia i've acquired over the years and that for some reason suit the scene i'm writing, bc most of the time they're linked to a certain time in my life or something i'm passionate about. for example in chapter two of All's Well That Ends Well i put in the 'in the best of all possible worlds...' thing from Leibniz's philosophy, which reminds me of when i was in high school and studying Candide in french literature class. or in Terra Incognita, the bit about the Dancing Plague is something i always wanted to put in a fic bc i'm a huge history nerd (+ the biggest buzzfeed unsolved fan, iykyk) and it's just? so interesting to me? idk i love it

23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

idk if it's the one i had /for the longest/ but it's definitely one of them- it's a milex oneshot based on a hozier song, i've had it in my mind for at least a year now and i just keep thinking about it. i often get random passages and bits of dialogue for it and i promptly write them down, but i'm just waiting for the right moment to properly focus on it, you know? it's really sad and heavy and sometimes i get emotional just thinking about it, so i really want to do it justice (let's pretend i'm not just procrastinating writing it bc i know it's going to hurt + i'm scared it won't end up being exactly as i envisioned it in my mind) (but as i said i have bits and pieces of it written down so the truth is i just need to stop being a little bitch and get to it)

That fragman is both the SWEETEST and the MOST OMINOUS thing I’ve ever seen. ALL AT ONCE.

Friends... we’re gonna go through some things. That being said, everything is going to be great. These writers have been solid so far, and I have faith they have come up with something really interesting to increase the longevity of this show. And I don’t know about you, but I’m prepared to go through some things if it means keeping Eda and Serkan for longer. (I heart them)

This show is about Eda and Serkan and their love story, at it’s core it’s a comedy, it will all lead to happy things, but... yeah, buckle up!

I have a lot of asks both about the fragman and last ep, so I’m going to answer a bunch under the cut.

You could be right! I like your thinking. I checked on twitter and I had to back away slowly. The juvenile temper tantrums were too much for me today.

Look, I think it’s clear something big is coming. It has to, there has to be something that shakes up the show. Some of the theories are more upsetting and catastrophic than others, but the writers won’t do anything that dings either character or their love for one another. Whatever happens will showcase the connection between these two and the chemistry between the actors, that’s the point of everything, and anything that does those things is gonna be a-okay with me.

@jan31 Hi Liza. Do you think we are going to see the wedding in 28 or they will leave it on a cliffhanger for next week. Lots of theories going round mainly cos of Neslihan saying new dimensions coming in episode 29, which could just mean married life etc. I have seen suggestions of memory loss, it's all a dream since episode one. I would personally love Eda to wake up like in episode one but for it to be a total turn around and she is the boss and Serkan the employee. Eda being robot yildiz appeals to me!!! I know it will never happen but leave me here with my dreams!!

I started the day at 90% sure they’ll be married in 28/29, but now I’m down to like 30% that they’ll get married in these episodes. I really, really want them to get married before whatever happens happens, because every scenario I can think of for this reset or starting again, seems like it would be better if they were married.

However, the shooting spoilers from today, make me question that. Namely the videos where Hande appears to still be wearing the ring on her right hand. We shall see, that could be for many reasons.

Honestly, though, I wouldn’t hate a memory loss storyline. Seeing one of them (and Serkan’s line in the trailer makes it seem like it might be him) lose their memory and have to fall in love all over again? There are worse fates for a shipper than getting to experience that all again but in a different way.

Today Neslihan made it worse by addressing everything and claiming she didn’t like all those Hande-bashing posts because... wait for it... she was HACKED. Oy. Hackers got in and went back two years to like gross posts about Hande? Sure, Jan. While I don’t believe that for a second, I guess that at least gives her cover with Hande so they can all pretend it’s true and move on so it’s not awkward on set. But, yikes, she needs to consult a publicist, she took a narrative that was circulating in certain circles in fandom and made sure all her followers were aware. Not very savvy.

As for the paps coming after Hande, yes I did see her in the car, she did look overwhelmed. Back off vultures!!! That’s why I think Kerem sometimes throws himself to the wolves so that doesn’t happen. She always handles them like a pro, but you can tell she’d rather be anywhere else on earth than talking to them.

The pap stuff is worse than I’ve seen before, they’re like vultures circling for any conjecture (sometimes made up out of thin air) they can turn into a question and blame fans. OUAT actors dealt with nothing like this. Also I can’t believe they never ask about the show. Like after last week? They could legit ask about the sex scene which probably would have given them some angle on the actors that they wanted, (especially since it was too hot for Turkish TV) but they let that pass them by, and instead asked the same questions about being together that they never answer. Dumbasses. They are not only awful people, they are awful at their jobs.

In Van, the paps pay off crew members for info, they always know more than fans. Also I don’t remember stars of my shows getting this level of tabloid attention before. Except for on Riverdale, Lili and Cole generated that level of interest, and while I didn’t pay terribly close attention to them, I feel like they rarely talked to the paps, were just photographed. Also I don’t suspected the CW of calling the paps on them, but I suspect either the network or production company of sometimes calling them on Hande and Kerem.

If they’d left his story at just going back to his country, then the Prince really wouldn’t have served his purpose. He was brought on to cause some sort of trouble, so they probably need him to cause the trouble before he goes, lets hope it ends with this kidnapping!

And to answer your question, yes, I do think it’s weird that neither trailer touched on it. On any other show I’d think it was a huge red flag, but on this show maybe not as much because a) there’s obviously a lot of romance in this episode, it’s not crazy that they are focusing on that to draw people in with the promos b) this show likes to do cliffhangers that end up being no big deal, that happens a lot.

Who knows it could turn out to be a big deal that shapes the rest of the episode in some unexpected way (Eda’s captured the whole episode and she’s dreaming about wedding prep, or... who knows) but I think it’s more likely that they resolve in the first 5-10 minutes and then move on. Since we know from the summary (not that I trust those) that Serkan goes on the bachelor weekend, it feels like the Prince is taken care of prior to that. I don’t think he’d leave her alone for a second if there was a chance the Prince was still a threat. Perhaps Babaanne is pissed he tried to kidnap Eda and tells them she’ll handle it herself???

You’re not wrong, at this point, having this wedding take place would be a shocking twist for all of us! Serkan Bolat might be the son of the man indirectly responsible for her parents death, but he would never hurt her. Take note, Grandbag!

The ratings were terrific during the summer. But to your point, it has a huge fandom both in Turkey and internationally, but it’s worth noting that most of those charts you see where it beats every other show in every imaginable social metric is just for Turkey.

It’s one of those lightning in a bottle situations where you get the right property and the right actors together at the right time and magic happens. And, for sure, the number one reason is the shipping. Shipping drives fandom engagement, and a fantastic ship with a juicy, fun, tropey love story is what this show offers. It also offers up two extremely attractive, talented, likeable leads with off-the-charts chemistry (plus the added speculation about an off-camera relationship that has intrigued more than a few fans, tabloids and gossip sites and fueled interest) who have done a good job of building the fanbase through their social media engagement. Plus the timing is part of it as well. I don’t know about you, but this show hit the spot during this pandemic and the horror of 2020. We all needed this escape.

I don’t know about a switch flip, this show has been fanfic land since the first episode! The tropes! That is how I described it to multiple people when I first started watching: an AU fanfic come to life.

As for the writing changes, no, I don’t think backlash after 25 affected 26 or 27, because 26 was already 90% shot, and 27 already written. However, I assume they themselves could tell that 25 got just too dark and had strayed pretty far from the DNA of the series. While I didn’t think it was bad, it was not fun to watch and this show ought to be fun to watch.

Let’s hope, however, that the backlash affects future episodes in that they know what works... and what doesn’t. The last two episodes definitely felt reminiscent of the first batch of episodes. Light, funny, romantic. If they can keep that tone... I’ll be thrilled.

Yes, it was lovely. You know I’ve preached a lot about how even though Eda and Serkan were broken up, they’ve still been together all this time. And it’s true, but there is something about them truly being together that is magical. We never got enough of that the first time around (a writing mistake in my opinion) and they’re so good together it’s lovely to watch.

Will Balca backdown even if she’s humiliated like that? She’s so delusional I’m not sure. What I am sure is that she’s dangerous. This came in before we saw the other two fragmans that have no mention of the kidnapping. Hard to picture how that is so easily resolved. Unless she frees herself (which seems unlikely in her groggy state) or maybe Melo’s future boyfriend is able to stop it before they get far? Or I don’t know. I just know that I want to see Serkan lose his mind and all the other characters see Serkan lose his mind and then I want it to be over. LOL.

That scene was amazing. I know Neslihan said that much of it was improvised. Probably that line from Serkan (since Serkan is SO out-of-his-mind in love I’m not sure he could even joke about having Eda only two nights a week! LOL) was improv from Kerem, and Aydan asking about the other nights, and Seyfi bringing up the weekend. And Eda’s very Hande-esque “Ser-KAN.”

I just love rewatching that scene and checking out everyone who is breaking character and just losing it. Cagri most of all. He’s blurred aback there but you can see Ferit spends the whole time laughing or trying to stifle a laugh. Reminds me of Cagri in the scene in 18 when they’re watching the security footage he was losing it in that scene as well.

Besides if Babaanne did that she would have no hopes of ever reconciling with Eda, so that seems unlikely she’d follow through and leave him there for so long a time.

Hello um may I ask a question? I just started my first ever fic when usually I write my own things away from any fandom. I’ve been posting to ao3, I spend hours upon hours getting a chapter done, proof read and edit about 30 times before I’m satisfied enough to post it, I try to keep it as original as possible however I’m quickly losing motive, I don’t typically care for numbers or views but this has made me care a little. I’ve found that a lot of fics that are written by someone who’s first language isn’t English do grab a lot more attention, the language barrier is obviously not a problem ive read many fics that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed who were written by a non English speaking person. The fics I’m referring to have very lose and sporadic storylines, they don’t make any sense because of the lose ends all through it, it’s very ‘and this happens and then this happens and now this happens’ but nothing is explained, these fics gain almost three times the attention mine does and I’m confused at what I could be doing wrong. I’m not entirely new to writing but I feel like my effort is being wasted. I started it for myself and not to please every person who finds it but seeing this has definitely knocked my confidence… what could be the problem?

First of all, congrats on starting you first fic :)

This is kind of a tricky question to answer because this is actually something that I've been quietly struggling with for a while now. I haven't really talked about it much though because the issue I've had sounds kind of whiney even in my own mind lol.

It's also tricky because it really kind of depends on the fandom you're writing for. Different fandoms have different interests and things that they tend to enjoy. To be honest I some times feel like the more original/unique it is the less attention the fic gets. Some of my least reviewed fics are the ones with bizarre concepts while my most popular ones tend to be stuff like 'there was only one bed'. That's not to knock these fics of course--they're popular for a reason. But more unique concepts tend to be more niche and not for everyone. Like I am a big fan of horror and zombie AUs which is something that not everyone is into. So it's not anything that you're doing wrong it's just that some concepts aren't as popular.

Likewise for certain ships and fandoms. Nerissa from W.i.t.c.h. is one of my favorite characters. The fandom isn't super popular and Nerissa is not a fan favorite to say the least so I kind of go into those fics expecting no attention. Even in popular fandoms like Avatar. I wrote this one (29 chapters) and it only got one review from my art bang partner. And my Azula fics are usually my most popular. However this one was for the Azula/Cupholder girl pair which is just such a niche interest that I'm not surprised that it was ignored. Throw on top of that, that it was sort of a dark fic. Even so it's still discouraging to but in 29 chapters of work and get nothing so I see where you're coming from. You just have to remind yourself that sometimes it isn't your writing that's the problem but simply that you're writing for a more niche concept/pair/character. With fics sometimes you just gotta write for you.

But honestly across the board I've noticed that I've been getting less reviews lately. I've talked to some others in my fandom on a discord server and they feel the same way. I genuinely think that people are just reviewing less. And you can't force people to review. Which is why it's important to just write for you. It's probably not anything that you're doing wrong it's just that some people might not have time to comment or they're shy and/or just don't know what to say so they don't say anything at all and settle for kudos and bookmarks. Also some people might not want to make accounts.

In general I feel as though writing and fandom as a whole has gotten a lot tougher. Back when I first started writing I never really had to worry about, 'is this story going to get people mad at me'? By this I mean that when I first started writing fics angst and dark fics seemed to be really popular. Like my best work was my really dark and depressing stuff. Recently these are the fics that are either loved or hated. They get a lot of nice reviews but they have also received some of my nastiest reviews. And people seem to get genuinely mad at authors for writing dark fics even if it's to cope. Which brings me to the next point; fandom evolves and changes; what's popular then won't stay popular. If you're an older fic author you'll probably got through periods of attention and then you'll fall out of the spotlight and maybe get back into it later on. If that makes sense.

But like I said above, I feel like fandom has just gotten tougher. Maybe I'm just seeing things that aren't there but sometimes I feel like people are becoming a lot harder to please or they're just really quiet about their enjoyment. Which it kind of is what it is. And there's nothing wrong with silent enjoyment. There's also nothing wrong with having specific tastes. I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of a picky reader myself lol.

That's why my best advice would be literally to write for you. Take breaks if you need to to avoid burn out. Fic writing lately (for me at least) has become write something I'd like to read and with luck other people will want to read it too. Just remind yourself that some pairs, characters, and tropes just aren't as popular and that your writing probably isn't the problem; most likely its just be a matter of writing for something that is underrated in your respective fandom.

If it helps, I've had people tell me on anon and not that they read everything I write but they don't review because they just don't know what to say. So odds are that you have a whole bunch of readers that really support and adore your work, they just prefer to lurk and not interact with the fandom much.

I hope that this helps even just a little. But like I said, it's hard for me to give advice on this because sometimes I feel the same way as you.

I actually don’t know a whole lot myself concerning certain AU’s ( there were a lot of AU suggestions, many of which we hadn’t heard of before, so my memory is a bit foggy on which is which as well ) but here’s some basic info I have!

Monster Falls - Dipper finds a magical stream in the woods that turns everyone in town into monsters! Dipper gets turned into a cervitaur ( centaur but deer ), Mabel is generally either a mermaid or a unicorn, Stan is a gargoyle, Ford is a sphinx, so on and so forth. Some people follow canon with the exception of the fact that, well, every character is a monster now, and others create a whole new plot centered around it!

Relativity Falls - Role/age swap! 12 year old twins Stan and Ford have just been shipped off to Gravity Falls to live with their Grauntie Mabel, but something about the town is amiss... ( every character who can be switched around with someone is switched; Manly Dan works at the shack and Wendy is his Mom, Preston Northwest is the snooty son of Pacifica, that kind of deal )

Reverse Falls - Another role swap, but in a different sense.Cosuins Gideon and Pacifica are in Gravity Falls for the Summer, and they have to put up with the evil perfomer twins Mabel and Dipper Gleeful. The personalities in this one are completely swapped around; Dipper and Mabel are the mean, snooty kids but amped up to the level that their the villains, and Pacifica and Gideon are the series heroes. This one is actually so amazingly diverse in what people do for it, that, while many things stay the same, you get an entirely new experience with each person!

TimeStuck - One -- or both -- of the Mystery Twins, generally Mabel, ends up back in time prior to the Portal Incident, usually during Stan’s grifting days ( occasionally, all the way back to Glass Shard Beach). It’s basically a time travel fix-it AU, the kids doing the fixing.

Reverse Portal - Stan ended up in the portal in 1982 instead, I think in some iterations he picks up a kid along the way?

Drifting/Grifting Stars - Drifting Stars stems from Not What He Seems, with Mabel getting sucked into the Portal and travelling the Multiverse with Ford. Grfiting Stars is? Hard to find anything for, but in more than one instance it was suggested right alongside Drifting Stars in the interest check. It looks like it’s the same deal but Stan instead of Mabel? But I’m going off of the like. 3 posts that popped up (I’m positive there’s more, but I never get the full scope of what’s available in my search results anymore)

Mystery Trio - (This one I know a bit more on, so longer description) It was based off a theory from before A Tale of Two Stans, then became an AU. But basically, Stan, Ford, and Fiddleford, prior to Ford falling in the portal, were a mystery hunting team living in Gravity Falls together. It’s a very fun AU filled with adventures of the three together. You’ll find some of the old fandom name confusion in certain posts, as it was when everyone thought Stanley was Stanford, and vice versa.

And everyone is free to suggest a different AU they want to create for! These are just the ones that, based off the interest check, we expect to have some content for each one.

Though, I would like to remind everyone some may not be comfortable with their AU’s being used, so please keep that in mind when choosing.
