also, here’s the recreational activities i think each clan would have!
shadowclan: it’s common for cats of all ages to play games similar to tag, or to hide and seek. it’s considered a good way to train stealth, and is also just a lot of fun. shadowclan cats, suprisingly to most, also have a rich tradition of poetry (which, in cat language, focuses around descriptors that match or influence the subject in some way, literally or metaphorically)
thunderclan: playfighting remains a common activity here even after kithood- it’s seen as a little immature in the other clans, but here it’s highly respected. thunderclan has a rich history of storytellers, though they’re known to embellish the truth.
riverclan: they swim, obviously! you can catch a lot of riverclan cats just swimming laps in the water. apprentices often dare each other to dive under the water as far as they can, but this dangerous game is heavily discouraged by adults. riverclan is a very aesthetically minded clan, and has many artists- traditionally, weaving things found beautiful into the dens, but a few daring young warriors have started a trend of wearing them in their pelts, something that spread from clan to clan during gatherings.
windclan: windclan cats love more cerebral forms of recreation. riddles are a common hobby among them, often built around describing strange twoleg things (those are always the hardest to guess). this isn’t to say they don’t have physical forms of play- you’ll never find a windclan cat ashamed to have zoomies whenever they feel pent up!
skyclan: skyclan cats love to climb, unsurprisingly, but they’re also a fan of using their claws to carve designs into the ground or stones. they’ve developed a primitive form of writing with this, with unique markings to represent some basic concepts, but they usually just like making pretty shapes.

i dont really like the popular representation of the dark forest, so here's my take;
Deep, thick endless snow, pine trees that rise high into a fog you will never see the end of. the forest is eternally freezing, and the trees creak under the weight of the snow bulding in their low hanging branches. finding another cat as a new addition to the dark forest is nearly impossible, and will normally be faced with aggression anyway. everything follows a dark grey and slightly blue colour scheme, and the sounds of prey surround you, despite there being none. if a cat is unlucky, they will slip into deeper snow, and dig themself out until their paws are more frostbitten and bleeding. if you listen closely, the wind carries the sounds of yowling cats.
cats always wake up shivering from the cold after a dream there.

World-building in Building Thunder #2 - Sculpting; Clay, Pots, and Grinders Chicoryjump of ThunderClan guides Sedgepaw through sculpting a rainwater pot. Meanwhile, Elmpaw and Wortpaw take advantage of the fact that their teacher is distracted.
Clay is a valuable resource to the lake Clans! It’s used to sculpt bowls and pots, the latter of which are used to store rainwater and honey.
Gathering and Processing Clay - Natural clay is gathered from riverbeds. Cats collect it by shoveling with the paws, sticks, etc, then moving it to a nice flat surface for processing. - Processing involves cleaning the clay (picking out sticks and pebbles) then mixing in sand, which helps it hold its shape. While the sand isn’t totally necessary, it’s better to mix it in now rather than deal with misshapen pottery. Finally, the clay is sculpted into the desired shape and left to dry in a sunny location.
Bowls and Grinders - Mortar & pestle for cats! Used by medicine cats (to make poultices) and RiverClan warriors (to prepare mashed salmon). - Bowl is crafted out of clay. The grinder is just a small rock that can be held in the mouth (often surrounded by moss for comfort). - Bowls can be made in a variety of sizes! Usually they’re small, but RiverClan makes bigger ones in late greenleaf to mash salmon in. - Bowls are often crafted in batches and may be traded between Clans that have a good relationship.
Pots - Pots have two uses in Clan culture: storing rainwater and storing honey. Rainwater is collected for cats who can’t leave camp, while honey is an invaluable antibacterial. - Crafted out of clay and topped with a cover. The cover is woven and weighed down with a rock to keep it in place. - Rainwater pots are larger than honey pots and stored around the edges of camp. When water needs to be collected, they’re rolled out into the clearing and left there during rainfall; to prevent disease, they need to be emptied after about two days. - Honey pots are stored in the medicine den and are strictly off-limits to anyone but the healers.

Worldbuilding: Ranks
This should have been one of the first posts, but eh, here we are. This post will focus on the ranks in a clan and their relative class!
Leader: Leaders are the successor of the previous leader, gaining respect and learning how to work with their clan during their time as a deputy. Leaders would be a prestige class, requiring a certain amount of levels in the warrior classes (can be mutliclassed from healers too).
Deputy: The clan's second in command and selected by the leader to follow in their pawsteps upon the leader's death. Deputies would not be a separate class, but would need to have the required levels for leader in a warrior class before becoming deputy.
Oracle: The Clan's spiritual advisor. They are chosen from birth and raised to learn things that pertain to their jobs, mostly how to communicate with spirits and some magic. There is only one oracle per clan. The successor would be known as a lesser oracle until the current oracle dies. Oracles would be their own class, but have two prestige classes, clerics and seers. Clerics are chosen by a single deity, which the oracle becomes a speaker of. Clerics would be similar to warlocks and clerics from DnD 5e. Seers are oracles that have spent too much time in the other planes of existence, becoming more magical in nature. They would be similar to sorcerers and wizards from DnD 5e.
Healers: The doctors of the Clan. They were taught how to use herbs to cure diseases and heal injuries. However, some may leave the rank, becoming a warrior instead. They would be a single class, focused on healing and buffs, similar to DnD's bards.
Warriors: The lifeblood of the Clan, warriors would be split into two classes, fighters and hunters. Fighters focus on training in battle, becoming more of a strength based character. Hunters focus on hunting or fishing to feed their clan, creating a more dexterous character. Some may have a change of heart and become a healer.
Unranked: Unranked characters would be any cat that has a 'job', but is not a warrior, healer, or high rank NPC classes are playable, but not optimal for play. Some NPC classes would include builders, gardeners, time-keepers (kinda like a historian), insect keepers (for things like honey and cobwebs), artisans, and cooks.
Monarchs: Nursing and pregnant parents are in this "rank". However, this is always at least one midwife, a cat who is a perma monarch, to help new parents. A classless rank.
Elders: As a cat gets too old to do much, they will retire and become an elder. Some elders take on an unranked job on occasions, but do not have the strict responsibilities of that job. A classless rank on it's own.
Apprentices: A cat learning a rank or job. For PC classes (oracle, healer, and both warrior classes), an apprentice is level 1 and graduates at levels 3-5 (depending on level). For NPC classes, they do not have a strict level to graduate.
Kits: Any cat younger than 6 moons. A classless rank.

The Arts in ClayClan Culture
Information on ClayClan’s numerous artistic pursuits! ClayClan is most active at dawn and dusk, with a resting period in the afternoon. It’s during this resting period that cats most often participate in crafts! Clay sculpting, weaving, story-telling, play rehearsal, games, friendly competition... it’s time to take a break from hunting and patrolling and spend casual time with Clanmates.
Below the cut: Clay sculpting, weaving, story-telling and stage plays
Clay Sculpting
Perhaps ClayClan’s most important art is that of clay sculpting. It has massive significance in both their religion and culture, and is practiced by nearly everybody at some point or another. Sculptures are weak due to being sun-baked, so they’re replaced often. Religious sculptures are kept around the acolytes’ den.
Acolytes make special sculptures (known in Claymew as shihafbon) depicting the gods, Silverpelt spirits, or folk heroes - these are considered good luck, and can bring favor upon cats who pray with them. Gods have specific imagery used when sculpting them, but depictions of Silverpelt and folk heroes are more open to artistic interpretation.
All ranks can sculpt clay as a hobby! These sculptures have no religious significance or associated power, but are plenty of fun. Some cats get rather proficient.
Weaving
ClayClan practices simple weaving - den walls, nests, cordage, that sort of thing. Cordage is crafted out of woven grass, reeds, or brambles and is used to tie things together; it may also be baked into sculptures as a handle, making them easier to transport with the mouth.
Story-telling and Stage Plays
Story-telling is very important to ClayClan! Stories are used to pass religion, folk tales, and history down through generations. It’s not uncommon for a proficient story-teller to gather a crowd and spend an hour or more weaving a particularly complex tale. Stories are usually told in the afternoon, between the dawn and evening activity spikes.
In recent generations, the art of stage plays has risen in popularity! These plays involve several actors who memorize lines and put on a show for an audience (some plays also involve lines that are sung or chanted). Plays are shorter than oral stories due to the physical work and preparation involved. It’s common for actors to paint their fur with natural dye and don accessories to better resemble the character they’re portraying!  When gods are involved in a play’s storyline, they’re never actually shown - this is due to fear of misrepresenting them. Rather, there’ll be a cat hidden off-stage who speaks that god’s lines, and the cats on-stage will react accordingly.  Plays are acted out on a prepared stage somewhere in the territory. Before the show, a “backstage crew” will clear the stage of debris and even set up props! It’s a very creative process.

VERNAL POOLS FUNERAL & BURIAL TRADITIONS
being a young colony, the VPC does not yet have a highly-developed religion and pantheon. because of this, they’ve not yet formed a defined method of vigil, but a tradition for funeral processions and burial is starting to strengthen.
cw for frank talk of death and animal death
VIGIL
upon a colonymate's death, their body is laid in the middle of the current camp for mourning
the cat’s family is to groom their body, weaving trinkets and other accessories into their pelt. they can utilize flowers, other plants, or feathers to hide any evidence of what killed them, or other unsightly wounds
their mentor/pupil, family, friends, and other cats close to the deceased are invited to sleep with them for the last time
at sunrise, a procession of the colony, led primarily by the deceased’s mentor/pupil and family, starts its way to the burial mound
the deceased is then buried atop the mound
the body is also buried with a bundle containing various grave goods, traditionally including a carved totem of their patron god, a feather of their family bird, and notable personal items of the deceased, such as accessories, games, or their favorite food
if there is no body for the deceased, their family bird is wrapped in a blanket of spanish moss (tillandsia usneoides) and is used instead. it is still weaved with momentos and given a burial bundle
this process also applies if a cat has gone missing and is assumed dead as well
BURIAL MOUNDS:
as you might’ve noticed, the VPC does not use a standard graveyard to home the dead. instead, they create a burial mound
each cat who dies during the reign of the current leading pair is buried together in the same mound
the leading pair is the last to be buried on each mound, for a new one is created with each new leading pair
the mounds are located between the two camps. they are visited every time the colony migrates between camps
at the moment, the colony is currently on its fourth burial mound, as estuary mangrovemumble and herbalist gatorchomp are its fourth leading pair. they will be buried atop it once they pass

Leaders can choose which life they want to lose in order. The will experience something related to that cat's death or, rarely, have a talk with them. When the leader dies, they go into a misty, swirling meadow, surrounded by the cats who gave them their lives.
Pinestar chose Harepounce first, wanting to brave it. He felt the aching in her stomach, but also the intense love for her daughter, Whitekit. It is a looming feeling, especially when he first eats kibble, his belly full while other cats go hungry that night.
Bluestar chose Mosskit last, and instead of feeling the winter's chill, she felt nothing but safety and love, the snow becoming a blanket to settle into. Mosskit allowed her to spend her last moments lucid, seeing all of her children on the bank as she passed.
Crookedstar chose Appleshine for his first, and felt the intense pain she had felt as she died, and the pain gave him determination to keep going during a battle with Thunderclan. (Guess what they were fighting over!)
Tallstar's second to last life was lost after the Bloodclan battle, he chose Dawnstripe's life. She showed him the thrill of the battle she had passed away in, but that while sometimes fighting for something is necessary, it isn't always the only option. It sticks hard with him.
Brokenstar picked Sagewhisker to get rid of it first, he felt the intense pain of the heart attack that killed her, from that point on he made other cats fight his battles more, wanting to hold onto his lives.
Leopardstar's final life was with Brightsky, who she had been avoiding. She watched her mother's life slip away, and the heartbreak that her mother had felt seeing that 2 of her children had been born sleeping. She realized as the world faded to cold darkness that she'd made a mistake.
Losing all his lives at once, Tigerstar had begged each of them to save him, one by one. But they could not, even if they wanted to. The last lost was the tiny warrior, Olivetail, showing her death was at the claws of his own ancestor, Gorsestar, in the same way he himself bleeds out now.
Firestar choses Swiftclaw first to get that over with. It is agonizing pain but all the Might of Lionclan in his bones keeps him going and fighting even when the literal jaws of death clamp down. He remembers Swiftclaw, and all the young cats he is fighting for when he comes back to the living world.
Blackstar chooses to lose the life Blizzardwing gives him, wanting to be rid of it as fast as possible. He feels sickness claw at him, and rage at an unfulfilled life full of regrets. It's... sobering, especially when he just lost the life due to a branch falling on him.
Leafstar choses Dawnstar (who gives a life for Selflessness) during Skyclan's Destiny to see if she is doing the right thing by helping the rogues. It is calm and cold and quiet, her lungs feel tight but she can feel guilt baring down on her as she watches herself through Dawnstar's eyes denying herself catmint to make sure the other cats can live through the greencough epidemic, seeing a Starclan cat looming over a kitten, knowing he will be a heroic leader.
Onestar's final life was Brushclaw, who didn't show him his death, but only talked about how disappointed he was. He gave Onestar a life for friendship, and Onestar chose to isolate himself afterwards, acting unfriendly towards even his own clanmates.
Mistystar's first life was Crookedstar, and she spoke with him about what happened to Leopardstar, and if she was a bad cat for it. He gives her reassuring words, and tells her that he is proud if her.
Bramblestar's first life lost is for Longtail, he feels the terror as he loses his sight, reliving Longtail's last moments before the tree crashes down, all he can think of is the last though in Longtail's head: I can't let prey go to waste, I'm sorry Poppydawn. It rattles him completely.
Rowanstar chooses Cedarheart during a Yellowcough life loss, who fought with all his might to protect the Riverclan nursery, dying for them just as the retreat order was called. It fills him with vigor and strength.
As Harestar lays dying of Blackcough, he picks Barkface. They talk, and Barkface confirms that, no, he will not recover from this. But not to lose hope, for Windclan's future is still bright, have faith. As he gazes over at Breezepelt, he feels a glimmer of hope.
Tigerstar's second life lost after Rowanstar was Flametail, he missed his brother too much to save it for later. The water made him afraid, but when he saw how Jayfeather had tried to SAVE his brother, he personally traveled to Thunderclan and invited Jayfeather to a feast, re-building a bridge that had been hanging in threads.

random worldbuilding idea my head came up with: the language the cats speak obviously isn’t English it’s like. meowese or whatever just translated into English. so my brain decided to think about what the language might be like in universe going by clan culture.
- species tend to have a two word description as their title, similar to how cats are named, though there’s shortened versions used more commonly. it’s believed to be bad luck to refer to twolegs by their shortened name, and superstition leads to them being solely referred to by their descriptors.
- the cats do not have gendered pronouns- they instead have pronouns based on rank and accomplishment. there’s a single set of pronouns for kits, apprentices, leaders, deputies, and medicine cats, but there’s a few for warriors denoting their seniority. deceased cats also use a separate set of pronouns- one for those in starclan and one for those in the dark forest. referring to a cat by a separate set of pronouns is considered extremely offensive.
- there’s a rudimentary signed version of the language conveyed through tail signs, though this was designed for hunting and stalking and generally conveys only information useful there. it’s most commonly taught in shadowclan.
- descriptors are believed to give influence onto things named after them. kits are named after things their mothers want their child to grow up influenced by in many cases (though being named after physical traits or lost loved ones isn’t uncommon). clan cats have their own form of poetry that is centred around this- listing descriptors that apply to and or influence the subject of the poem.
- kittypets who spend time outdoors often pick up on bits and pieces of the language due to exposure to strays, but they tend to struggle with its intricacies, and are therefore considered by clan culture to be very rude. indoor kittypets are often completely incomprehensible to clan cats, having come up with their own language, though some pick it up from parents and siblings.

part 1 and 2 of potentially 4 but maybe more entries in patterns I've noticed among warrior cats rewrites. I'd like to sort them into categories but I only know so much of some of them and I don't know what I don't know.
part 3 and 4 will be "Watership Down but Cats" and "Ga'Hoole But Cats" respectively, let's see if I can get my ferret-brained ass to work on them. if you have or know any rewrites that don't fall into any of these categories, lmk and describe em for me.
and no, AUs where they're fantasy creatures or anthro pirates or showcats don't count, those are Alternate Universes, not Universe Alterations, if that makes any sense whatsoever.
(for clarification: AU means the setting has fundamentally changed. UA keeps the overall setting, just added more bells and whistles (like gods and monsters) or moved canon slightly to the left (Swiftpaw lives).)

World-building in Building Thunder #1 - The Wondrous World of Weaving Galepaw, WindClan’s medicine apprentice, collects sorrel and lavender in a small basket harness.
The cats in Stars Above can weave! Woven cases are used to transport all sorts of goods, typically prey or herbs. These cases are crafted out of grass, reeds, cattail leaves, vines, brambles, and honeysuckle - materials are dried before any actual weaving takes place. Weaving is a time-consuming but important task for all four Clans.
Twine - Simple twine is crafted from willowbark, woven grass, vines, or blackberry brambles. It’s used to tie together other materials.
Healer’s Rope - Sturdy string crafted from stinging nettle fibers. - Used to make splints for limbs, tie herb bundles, and hang up herbs to dry.
Baskets - The hardest project a weaver can undertake, baskets are tricky to get right and take a long time to put together. Due to this, a Clan typically has only 2-3 baskets at a time - when not in use, they’re stored in a dry, sheltered spot within camp. - Always have some sort of handle and cover! The handle is a sturdy reed that can be replaced when worn out. The cover is a woven mat that’s secured by being slipped over a piece of bone, stick, etc tied into the basket wall. - Held in the mouth via the handle. - Sometimes decorated with flowers or colorful shells!
Pouches - Smaller version of a basket; these are easier to make and transport, but hold less. A Clan always has more pouches than baskets. - Held in the mouth with a twine handle or slipped onto a basket harness.
Basket Harnesses - Kittycat backpacks! - Small woven baskets attached to a woven harness that slips over the body. Used to transport plants, prey, and other small objects like rocks or shells. - The size of the basket varies depending on its intended use. In the featured art, Galepaw has a small basket intended for carrying small amounts of herbs. - Most often utilized by medicine cats when carrying herbs to another Clan for trading or when gathering large amounts at once. Also frequently used by warriors on fruitful hunting patrols or for gathering construction materials.
Fish Harnesses - Unique to RiverClan! Used to carry large fish from the river back to camp. - First, a flat surface is constructed out of sturdy sticks and tied together with thick twine. This is then tied to two separate harnesses worn by two different cats. These cats walk in tandem, supporting the fish between them.  - Wearing a fish harness is awkward due to the weight distribution and teamwork required. Apprentices practice by carrying around rocks and smaller prey items. - RiverClan usually has 4-5 of these at any given time; warriors are careful not to break them, but accidents happen. New fish harnesses are usually crafted in late greenleaf, in preparation for the salmon run, and may be repurposed into basket harnesses for the following leafbare.

thinking more about duels in warriors...
Leader Duels
New leaders, fresh off getting their nine lives, are usually the ones to call for duels early on. This is both out of pride and building a rapport with their Clan, a lot of precarious leaders used the dueling system to earn respect.
Older leaders in this regard are, obviously, less likely to call for duels. However, it's been noted that those who are being questioned by their Clan will act more rashly in challenging others to attempt to bolster their public images.
Dueling on a last life is extremely rare but not unheard of. Both challengers actually dislike it quite a bit, the one who slays a leader will bear that smear on their leadership record for moons to come.
Duels are usually done three days after the challenge is issued. This is meant to be an ode to the original great battle of the forest: the day before the battle, the day of the battle, and the first day of the clans. Leaders usually prepare by resting, training, and keeping themselves fit for the fight! Some leaders, those more devout, will actually spend their time fasting and meditating.
a leader who tries to back out is faced with great shame and can easily lose the support of their entire clan. A leader who flees is expected to never come back.
Warrior Duels
considered to be on a much smaller scale considerably compared to leader duels but are still taken pretty seriously.
Duels between Clanmates are the most common, they're mostly practiced by ShadowClan and ThunderClan.
They can range from a dispute over something petty like prey opinions (which generally earn eye rolls from their Clanmates) or challenging cats in power for their position.
Deputy is the most commonly disputed position however there have been some cases where Leaders and even Medics have been challenged by other cats.
Between Clan duels do happen and only require the leader to be notified. These battles usually happen on borders, or, if they don't share a border, on neutral grounds.
It's usually just a dominance scuffle, the other cat simply must be unable to fight anymore. No killing, just plain simply brutal fighting.
Yes, cats have died of their injuries later on. No, it does sway the Clans from banning this practice.
Eye-for-an-Eye Duels (courtesy of @doritopaw101)
These battles are to the death. They're extremely rare and extremely brutal.
These are most often cross-Clan duels, very few cats would challenge their own Clanmates to one of these. Not to say it hasn't happened.
They require the leader's explicit permission. It is seldom given but there are many cases where the leader can agree that the bad blood runs too thick and only claws will settle the dispute.
Victors of eye-for-an-eye duels often face social stigma and often receive harassment from the families.
Family members, as a result, must wait three moons to challenge the victors if they'd like. However, due to their reasons being out of revenge, many are denied permission from their leaders.
(Taking again from @doritopaw101 who had some really good ideas) Mistystar, as a warrior, was responsible for taking one of Blackstar's lives. Leopardstar barely had a leg to stand on to deny her the right to battle and Blackstar, as a new leader with a stained past, could not deny the right to a duel from one of his victim's family members. I imagine the life she took was the one Stonefur gave to him.
