THE ERNEST HEMINGWAY HOUSE AND MUSEUM, KEY WEST, FLORIDA...

Though the house itself was originally built in 1851, it was some eighty years later that Ernest Hemingway took up residence. He lived here from 1931 to 1939 with his wife, Pauline Pfeiffer.

Located at 907 Whitehead Street and located very close to the Key West lighthouse, the house was built in French colonial style for a wealthy marine architect and salvage expert by the name of Asa Tift.

Though Hemingway famously spent much of his Key West years either deep sea fishing or face down on the bar counter of Sloppy Joe's, he was still able to put together a conga line of outstanding literary work during his Key West sabbatical.

During their eight year residence, Hemingway and Pauline effected an extensive restoration of the property. On first seeing the property, Pauline called it 'a damned haunted house'.

Amongst them was 'Green Hills of Africa' 'Islands in the Stream' 'The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro' and 'To Have And Have Not'.

The house was also home to Hemingway's famous, feline menagerie of six toed cats.

The house was formally opened as a museum in 1964.

Dickey Chappelle was an American war correspondent who was embedded with the Marines during WWII and the Vietnam War. She first connected with the Marines at the front lines during the battle of Iwo Jima where she dug her own foxhole and and broke bread with the troops. She later learned to jump with paratroopers and traveled with troops into conflict zones in all parts of the world. Dickey’s fearlessness and willingness to dig in with the military and share a unique perspective of their experiences earned her many journalism awards and the respect of the military. During the early years of the Vietnam War, Dickey was embedded with Marine advisors, praising their efforts in South Vietnam. She later joined up with troops, taking on a maternal roll for many of the younger Marines. On November 4, 1965, Chapelle was killed by shrapnel from a mortar shell while on patrol during Operation Black Ferret. Her body was escorted home by a Marine honor guard and she was given full military honors. A memorial was placed near the location of her death with an inscription that read, “She was one of us and we will miss her.” Dickey Chapelle was the first war correspondent to be killed in Vietnam and the first American female reporter to be killed in action. She was 47 years old.
