BOOK REVIEW: Mia’s Journey by Diane Byington
In Mia’s Journey, author Diane Byington creates a genre-bending novel combining science fiction, paranormal activity, and women’s fiction. Mia Gray took over her brother’s dream of becoming an astronaut after his death. She’s worked for years to be assigned to a launch. Three weeks before she’s due to head to space, her world crashes—literally. She’s run over by an SUV and suffers significant…

BOOK REVIEW: Among Schoolchildren by Tracy Kidder
I enjoyed reading Kidder’s nonfiction books, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World and Strength in What Remains, and decided to catch up on some of his backlist. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author with what I feel is a unique approach to his reportage. He seems to embed himself in his stories for months and produces truly in-depth looks at…

I am so thrilled to introduce the new paperback version of the second edition of #HuntingTheDevil being released on 4/7/2024, in response to the worldwide epidemic of genocides and to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide. The lovely cover was designed by #JayeRochon of #CleverUnicorn. She chose roses with thorns because they're the Rwandan national flower, an elegant way to depict the bloodshed and the angst of the genocide as well as the beauty of the romance. The colors overlaid on the book title are those of the Rwandan flag. She pulled together something that feels evocative, powerful, and dark but also hopeful. It also says "Kickass African-American female main character.” The electronic edition will be free on most major platforms from April 7 through July 15, 2024, the hundred days the 1994 genocide lasted.

Ten days until the re-release of my novel Hunting the Devil. And 17 days until it is free, my effort at bringing genocide and its trauma to the human psyche to the forefront, especially in light of the situations between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, China and the Uyghur, Myanmar and the Rohingya, and other places around the world where people are facing genocide—not for anything they’ve done, just for being different.

BOOK REVIEW: The Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan
Having recently read the Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series, I decided to tackle his Trials of Apollo series (which includes The Hidden Oracle, The Dark Prophecy, The Burning Maze, The Tyrant’s Tomb, andThe Tower of Nero) and found it just as enjoyable. Zeus blames Apollo for the happenings that occurred previously in the Heroes of Olympus series and, to punish his son, drops him literally…

BOOK REVIEW: Rifted Hearts by M.A. Guglielmo
I had read the short story prequel to this fantasy/paranormal/LGBTQ romance (“Witch City Rift”) which helped clarify a bit of this book and introduces some of the characters (like Remi Gatti, the villain/love interest in the male/male romance), but Rifted Hearts is easily read as a standalone novel. I appreciated Guglielmo’s use of contemporary terms such as ace, demisexual, pansexual,…

BOOK REVIEW: The Lion Seeker by Kenneth Bonert
I’m finding, as I get older, reading books that are thought-provoking or emotionally crushing (such as books on genocide) I have to read in stages. Because of the emotional discomfort The Lion Seeker brought, I started out not wanting to review it. It was painful to read, and it took me forever to get through it. Then weeks later, I realized the book was still haunting me and that I really needed…
