I've also been working on a *lot* of new UI elements and mockups lately, here's a few of them! *(please ignore the aseprite font- it's not our actual font in game and looks kinda wonky on the mockups)

(Ignore the totally-normal-mannequin standing in in the place of the player model at the moment.)

Something I've been working on. This is Aerollel, a game that I've been making for the past few weeks. It is essentially Minecraft mixed with Roblox and if it was released between 2005 and 2007.

"I've got issues... 😬 | Terraria, Pt. 8"
youtube
Let me tell you a story about how I entered in to hardmode too soon, corrupted my world before spreading out my NPC's, voiding my chances for now to get pylons and discounts, which is a big problem since I'm broke and haven't built everything I needed to have built by now yet... I've got issues 😂

Introducing Zepha
Hi, I'm Auri and I'm reinventing the wheel making a voxel game / engine. Recently I've managed to scrape together a really cool RGB voxel lighting algorithm so I'm going to make a post about it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One thing that was really important to me when designing my game's lighting was that I wanted the static lighting to fit in with more fancy graphical effects. That means that Minecraft's lackluster diamond-shaped lighting wasn't going to cut it. I wanted spherical light and I wanted colors!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To accomplish this, I split the lighting into 6 channels. RGB for block light, and RGB for sky light. (technically there's 9 channels but that's too complicated to get into right now). I also store the direction that light comes from so that I can build a pseudo-sphere of light around the source.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To make things performant, I had to delve deep into micro-optimizations like Word Level Parallelism, which is a technique to do the same operation on multiple numbers packed into a single integer. The algorithm supports a huge dynamic range for colors and brightnesses, and operates in real time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Any color can be used, and bright lights even overexpose. Lights can span chunks in radius!
If you're interested in the project, and want to see more, please join my Discord! I do weekly livestreams and I post updates often! Thanks for your interest ❤️❤️❤️

Mossy Cat (WIP)

Looking for some feedback today, this cute lil guy is based on a Bobcat, which is known to have fluffy cheeks- but I think it may look better without them honestly. What do ya'll think?

Recreating my 2D platformer character in voxels
On my last project (https://platformerprojectga.tumblr.com), i created a lil character for it out of pixel art, i decided to translate that over to voxels, i think it's done pretty well! Original:

Today I'm gonna play: Cloudpunk
I wanted to try something that looked similar to a game called RUINER and saw this. Reading the description it seemed more chill, but I love Cyberpunk themes so thought to give this a shot!
Gameplay is very simple at a surface, you just drive to collect and drop packages around various parts of the city. Your vehicle, a HOVA also comes with some features that require you to repair it if you were to smash it into other HOVAs or objects, or upgrade for new features, and also fill it with gas if it runs out. These things happen very infrequently (unless if you're bad at driving like me) so it doesn't hold you off from playing, which is a very nice plus that still adds a sense of realism to it! Once you get around to the game, you find other nifty features, like having to park to deliver parcels and allowing you to roam around the city on foot. Some platforming elements are present such as walking through tunnels that act as teleporters, or lifts that take you up or down a level. Little things like this add a lot of immersiveness in the level.
I wasn't expecting any story, or even a serious story at all, but instead I'm having a déjà vu when I played Firewatch: expecting a cozy relaxing game that drops a thrilling mystery making you want to know what comes next. The characters are surprisingly well written, and the plot is mostly coherent. I've been in many situations where the game asks you to make a choice (also surprising!), but I haven't seen my actions cause anything big, so it's a bit of a bummer that you're just given the illusion of choice instead.
In terms of UI and UX, the former is great for the most part. You're able to toggle them on and off, they're non-intrusive and simple. But I have often had a lot of trouble in finding out where the waypoint actually is when I'm on foot, as it doesn't properly tell me which side of the map I should be on, or whether I should travel up or down. A suggestion for this would be to either reposition the points, or make the gaps in the map (places you cannot access due to boundary or obstacles blocking the path) bigger, as I've often seen them in areas where I think I can access, but it turns out I have to take a long route instead. Adding an arrow pointer would also help to figure out whether the destination is on top or below. Games like GTA 5 does this quite well. There are some really nifty features when it comes to the camera. For the vehicle, you have: - Automated camera while driving, right stick is used to hover up/down - Regular manual camera control with the right stick -First person view inside the car with UI scaled to look more diegetic And on foot you have: -First person view -Third person view -Third person ''cinematic'' view Not sure what else to call the last one but the camera zooms out and you get a whole view of the current area, making it look more scenic. Either way, the amount of camera options in this game is pretty insanely good!
Music is fitting, and surprisingly more so when it comes to the tone of the story. It's quite dynamic and knows what fits the right mood! However personally when it comes to driving games like this (and also for GTA), I prefer to put my own music on and just relax. Playing some Synthwave playlists felt great and coincidentally matched the story at times too.
I don't play a lot of voxel style games, the only one that comes to mind is Pixel Gun 3D. This one really impressed me with what voxel games can bring, I might check out more!
Terms exclusive to this game: HOVA - A hovering car vehicle you use to control when you're not walking around. Allows you to travel around the game

We had a storage warehouse on our realm already, but I really wanted a space for plant-specific storage for the ten million oak leaves I inevitably need to save for custom trees -- so I built us a greenhouse! I think this might be the largest build I've done yet!!
A couple of things have labels, but for the most part storage spaces are delineated by the plants themselves -- barrels for a particular type of leaf have the corresponding sapling sitting on top, flowerboxes show off what kinds of flowers go in the barrels next to them, etc. I really wanted the space to have practical room to store EVERY PLANT, but to also feel like the primary purposes is growing and enjoying them.
And bonus planning sketches:

it took a LOT of planning -- these are just a few of the sketches I did trying to figure out where everything should go. IT WAS HONESTLY QUITE INTIMIDATING TO SORT OUT, I can't believe it's done!!
Also, a couple shots of the little dirt storage room just b/c I think it turned out nice too:

If you wanna watch me walking through the space (these screenshots don't quite show it all), I streamed a little tour recently over here!
