Fic Excerpt: In Which Arkady Patel Is Very Gay (And Very Bad At Feelings)

“So!” Arkady chirps cheerily to drag her mind away from that dangerous path. “I’m sure this won’t need to take up much of your time. You, uh, can probably just pop a bandage on it and call it a day.”

“Is spending time with me really so unpleasant?” Violet asks lightly, and she’s clearly trying to joke, but something about it stutters and falls flat, too sincere. Arkady would bury her face in her hands if she wasn’t afraid of clocking Violet, who’s bending over her leg, gently cleaning and dabbing at the wound.

“No!” Arkady protests. “That’s not what I- it’s just, you did such a good job of treating it before…” Ugh, she really needs to stop before she digs herself an even deeper hole. Crouched down at knee level, Violet just gives a little sigh, her shoulders slumping.

“It’s not as bad as it could have been,” she pronounces, “but you’re… gonna have some pretty bad scarring thanks to Frederick shooting you in the wound before it was properly healed over.” Her tone manages to contain both sympathy and quiet anger. For her part, Arkady isn’t that bothered by the scarring; she’s got a lot of scars. As long as she can still use her leg.

“You’re also going to need to stay off that leg – properly this time,” Violet adds, giving her a meaningful look. “And I especially don’t want to catch you running on it again.”

“In my defence,” Arkady begins, “Jeeter almost set fire to the-”

She’s cut off by the shock of Violet pressing three fingers over Arkady’s mouth, her eyes dancing with amusement. After a moment Violet takes her hand away – Arkady doesn’t think she could form words now anyway, even if she tried. A very pretty blush suffuses Violet’s cheeks.

“I mean it,” she says with a smile. “Stay off the leg.”

Then she busies herself with tidying up the gauze and antiseptic, rolling up the bandages and tucking it all neatly back into the med kit. Her hair swings over her face as she works; Arkady wants to smooth it behind her ear, but she’s paralysed. Can she-- should she--?

Violet looks up at her, and she’s still smiling, but there’s a hint of uncertainty there too. Arkady should say something, but all of her thoughts have dissolved into white noise. She swallows dryly.

“I-- thanks for the wound, uh. Forthebandages,” she manages, and then immediately disregards Violet’s medical advice in favour of half-sprinting out of the medbay.

Much later, alone in her room, Arkady replays the moment in her head (okay, she’s been replaying it on a loop ever since it happened, she’s just acknowledging it now) and groans, squeezing her eyes shut in the darkness.

Fact one: she is hopelessly, head over heels gone for Violet Liu.

Fact two: she’s almost definitely ruined any chance that she had of Violet returning those feelings, and possibly of Violet thinking of her as a functional human being.

Fact three: either she gives it up as a lost cause now and moves on (not an option, see fact one) or she needs to do something to show Violet once and for all how she feels – at which point either she’ll get rejected (likely) or she’ll have a shot at something amazing (but with Arkady’s track record, it’s much more likely to be the first one).

She goes to find Sana.

A/N: Just a little excerpt from something I’m currently working on that I’ve nicknamed “The Haphazard Gestures of Affection Fic”, or: In Which Arkady Patel Is Very Gay And Doesn’t Know What to Do About It.

AU in which the conversation in the kitchen never happened in Episode 10, and instead Arkady manages to dig herself into an even deeper hole of Feelings before attempting to woo Violet with a series of slightly poorly-planned romantic gestures. The rest of the crew is just here for the entertainment (well, Sana is trying to help, but... she’s also extremely entertained).

Starship Iris: But Gayer then xD

Bree, I cannot stress this enough, I have no idea how to make Starship Iris gayer. Idk. Krejjh and Jeeter wedding?

It takes place on the Iris II (like Buddy and Vespa getting married on the Carte Blanche) because whilst no planet may recognise their magic legally, it’s sure as hell recognised on the ship they call home.

Both of them wear tuxedos and look rightfully fancy in them. Krejjh’s has four sleeves because I am very ride or die for them having four arms!

The vows are like the goofiest and sweetest thing ever. Krejjh messes theirs up because of them misunderstanding English and human culture. Brian falls in love with them just that little bit more.

Arkady is best man and Violet is so very gay for her in a tux. The speech is full of ridiculous anecdotes and in-jokes. Whilst the crew of the Iris II are the only attendants, the laughter that fills the room during the speech more than makes up for it.

Rather than using a recorded song for their first dance, Sana plays the guitar for them because she’s their captain and she can/will make sure their wedding is as Incredible as possible.

Krejjh doesn’t beer stand why but they have a bouquet anyways. Arkady catches it and glances over at Violet, leaving the science officer with a bright red face.

The inherent romanticism of dancing at the first ever Dwarniana-human wedding. (Despite the fact neither Arkady or Violet are very good dancers, they do try anyways!!)

The fanmixes are those ones I've been pulling together since spring, so rest assured they are slated to be posted! I'm doing one for each crew member (except remaining unknown quantity Park, poor Park, or maybe lucky Park since all the mixes have heaps of angst tracks), and I was planning to post those first, then the three canon ship mixes, then miscellany like noncanon ships and Other Violet.

I haven't quite finished the first, Sana's...it's admittedly already on the longer side for a non-shuffle mix, but it needs a couple more tracks in the middle before I'll be happy with it. I've been listening to tracks I haven't heard by artists I like, and I found another good Sana track this morning...

But as I said in my tags there's...actually no reason for character mixes to come before the ship mixes? I think that that started as a vague plan when nothing was close to completion, and now it hadn't hit me yet that all three canon ships are ready. The Campathi mix is still on the shorter side, but shorter mixes aren't a bad thing, so I'm calling it done! Ship mix time! (I know, I could always interleave characters and ships, but I like categories. 😄)

I have. Never heard "concept ship name" as a term for that kind of ship name, I love it. I read "mint trees" and my gremlin brain immediately came up with something far worse:

I like the idea of "battle poetry" for Brian/Krejjh...they create battle poetry and he studied an epic poem. Of course, that could create confusion between battle poetry the ship name and battle poetry the thing. I can't think of any serious suggestions for Vikady... I actually think the fatal flaw of both mint trees and tea tree is not that they are silly but that the mint tea was also kind of Arkady's thing, so it would be nice to combine stuff that has to do with each of them. (Anyone?)

I HADN'T SEEN CAPTAIN SOUP. Glorious. I definitely got Campathi from you, IDK if you came up with it or just popularized it ("popularized" = "got at least one other person to start using it"...everything in a small fandom is relative, eh)?

The only ones I've come up with are Tripatel and Tripateliu, when I was trying to come up with a smushname for Arkady/Sana and thought it was cute their surnames nested together that way. Then I realized Violet's does too!! Fate, clearly.

To come full circle, I came up with Tripatel in the process of tagging my first post about fanmixes, since they were the start...

Last week I was listening to a new album and thought “hey this is a good Arkady/Sana track I should make an Arkady/Sana fanmix” which is all well and good but then as I was building the fanmix I kept running into tracks that’d work better for Vikady or Sana/Campbell or Arkady or…..and long story short I now have fanmixes in progress for Arkady/Sana, Arkady/Violet, Campbell/Sana, tscosi in general, Violet, Arkady, Sana, and Krejjh

arkady/violet arkady/sana campbell/sana does arkady/sana have a smushname a quick search reveals nothing that would bar sakady or tripatel from ship name use i think i'm gonna go with tripatel because I simply think it is cute that their names nest together that way

(Technically Arkady/Sana is at the rear of the posting queue because noncanon, but I'm also chicken since "Much of the appeal is that it'd be such a messed up disaster" seems like a great way to alienate anyone who doesn't ship it and anyone who ships it in the sense of thinking they'd be good together. But I'll human up and post their angsty, angsty tracks some day. 😆)

Violet/Arkady. I wrote this on my phone sometime last week in the middle of the night. So it’s trash. But I figured I’d throw it on tumblr instead of drafting it into oblivion. The plan has been to do a bunch of one shots for them and the original idea for this was Violet waking up with a nightmare and Arkady comforting her (as a hopelessly gay undercover soft would do) but I decided to switch it and write it the other way. Hopefully I’ll get some better stuff on Ao3 soon.

Violet registered the sound of soft snoring first, light and breathy and barely catching but undeniably recognizable. Its confirmed by the bundle of a familiar blanket hanging off the edge of a curved lounge bench fixed to the wall that bends behind the mess cupboards. Brian can and will fall asleep anywhere, Violet didn't need long to figure that out. Even if she hadn't wrapped herself in that very blanket following coming out of cryo her first day aboard the Rumor she would have been able to recognize it as his, she’d seen it enough here and there since then. The bottom line was, it wasn't shocking and she paid no real attention to him as she began digging around for a tea bag. 

The kettle Sana had promised her was already warming over the coiled burner. She’d only just gotten her hands on a tin of elusive earl grey tucked up on the highest shelf when she heard shuffling, the sound of the blanket moving against the worn leather of the bench, accompanied by a stifled gasp only just audible through the room.

Violet went about her business, her concern piqued but not enough to warrant interrupting Brian's rest. From what she understood it wasn't something he submit to easily, always working on decoding or translating one thing or another just for the thrill of it. It didn't seem quiet thrilling to her but she assumed linguistics for him bared the same satisfaction molecular biology did for her.

She was barely through pouring her tea when the soft muttering turned to harsher, fuller formed words, and all at once Violet realized it wasn't Brian after all.

It was Arkady’s voice that drifted her way, her tone tight and forced and panicked. Violet put the kettle down to peer around the corner and confirm what she already knew. Arkady, asleep beneath Brian’s blanket, was dreaming.

Caught in a moment of indecision at first Violet just watched her. The way her brow furrowed, how dark hair spilling over her face and stuck in places to her sleep warmed cheek, and the fistful of blanket she had tucked tightly beneath her chin. Arkady’s slumber looked far from peaceful and internally Violet weighed whether or not she should wake her.

A moment later making a decision was no longer a problem as Arkady yelled out and sprang up at the same time. Her eyes were wild and her arm swung into the air, catching the unfortunately sharp edge of a bolted metal table. The sight of blood finally kick started Violet into motion and she stepped forward, rushing out a shushing sound as she made to capture Arkady’s wrist.

“You're dreaming. You're dreaming.” She soothed, repeating herself to be heard.

Arkady’s eyes found hers and focused, red rimmed and glossing over with obvious tears before the woman had a chance to stop them. Violet felt the urge to look away but she didn't. Instead she settled on the edge of the cushion right beside Arkady and moved her opposite hand to rub comforting circles along Arkady’s back.

“It’s alright.” She offered. Violet could only imagine what Arkady was dreaming about that had her waking so violently but she wasn't sure it was her place to ask either. So she didn't.

It took a few short moments for Arkady to make sense of her surroundings and Violet’s words but as soon as she did the recoil was automatic.

Arkady was quick to slip her wrist from Violets grip and if the space where she’d been lying were any bigger she would have twisted free from her touch entirely.

Her cheeks burned and a flash of anger ripped through her, making her wish she had some scathing retort she could send Violets way to cover up a vulnerable moment but the words only just tipped at her tongue and Arkady found herself simply looking away and drawing in a few much needed breaths.

“You're bleeding.” Violet pointed out gently, respecting Arkady’s decision to pull away from her and resisting the urge to take her wrist again and examine the small wound.

“This damn ship.” Arkady huffed angrily, words that came like a mantra in times of frustration.

 She brought her palm to her lips, sucking away the beading blood in what looked like a practiced habit. It made Violet cringe, a noticeable reaction that tugged at the corner of Arkady’s lips in return.

“That is disgusting…and unsanitary.”

“It’s just a little blood Liu, I thought you were some sort of doctor.”

Violet rolled her eyes, unsure if she was glad to see Arkady had quickly come back to herself or annoyed that meant the never ending personality of a stubborn teenager.

“I AM. Or...was.” She shook her head and reached for Arkady’s wrist again, ignoring her earlier sentiment to give her space.

To her surprise Arkady allowed it and a quick look at the small slice to the side of her palm told her it barely even needed a bandage or a single butterfly stitch.

“Am I gonna make it?” Arkady asked when Violet held on for just a few moments too long, her tone deliberately dry.

Violet only lifted her eyes too her without releasing the gentle hold on her wrist and when their eyes met, she softened.

“Are you okay?”

The genuine concern threw Arkady off and she swallowed and blinked twice, faltering in her hardened resolve to never show emotion.

“I’m fine, Liu.” She said, meaning to make it sound sharper or at least carry some offense but it didn’t and even when she pulled her hand away it was slow and careful. Not anything like the first time. “You don’t fight in a war and walk away dreamless.” Arkady added, though she immediately grimaced at her own admission.

Violet nodded and without thinking the hand on Arkady’s back began its slow circling again. Arkady didn’t protest, she wasn’t even really looking at Violet, but she did let out a long sigh and Violet felt the tension drain from her shoulders.

She wouldn’t ask if Arkady wanted to talk about it, she knew better than that but she stayed for as long as she could. Tea forgotten and going cold on the counter behind them, Violet rubbed Arkady’s back and began humming for as long as Arkady let her.

get randomly assigned as your lab partner for a whole semester: icu taking away the obvious option of Violet so I’m gonna go with Sana. Neither of us are particularly good at science, but she’d probably be a hard worker and not leave it all to me.

get trapped with on a broken elevator for ten hours: Thought about putting Arkady here since she hangs out in the vents a lot and would probably be able to tell me we’re safe, seriously, calm down, but you are also right that she would not stop trying to break us out herself, so I’m gonna go with Krejjh. Krejjh would know nothing about elevators, but I think they’re the one that’d be able to chill and crack jokes to keep me from losing my mind.

get as my employee trainer for my new job at McDonalds: Arkady. I feel like she’d get irritated in that setting real fast, but not a worst case scenario.

some starship iris thoughts

In another couple of months, she might have friends again. [x]

I can’t tell you how much my heart hurts for young Violet. (also for older Violet pre coming into contact with the Rumor crew)

I’m sure we’ll learn more about her history in time, but so far my takeaway is that she’s been feeling lonely for a long time. unable to make the connections she longs for, unable to find people who are as interested in getting to know her as she is in getting to know them. work (and life) on the Iris was isolating, as she told Brian when they talked about Alvy and how he was the only one to make an effort to be friendly with her. and just.. imagine that. you’re stuck out there in a metal bucket which.. sure, it’s a fancy metal bucket but still, and there is nothing but empty space around you, and the few people you could connect with don’t care to. just imagine that loneliness.

and to know that it started long before she ever got on board.. to know how she’s felt like she was never going to measure up (to the other Violet Liu, to her own aspirations) to know that she feels like she’s not smart enough or tall enough or too neurotic.. it just breaks my heart. 

and I feel like Arkady and Violet are more alike in that way than they possibly realise. Arkady with her background and her hang-ups about only having an eights-grade education, and about the things she has done and continues to do even though she doesn’t like having to hurt people. I just want them to get to a point where they can accept that they are doing their best to be the best possible version of themselves, and to a point where they learn to communicate and to accept their self-worth, but I’m sure it will be a long time before either of those things happen. (we all know mental health is something that takes a lot of time and effort, and with everything else that’s going on, I’m afraid they don’t have a lot of time or energy to spare. but one day. hopefully.)

but.. and here comes my crappy headcanon about Violet and her home life.. which has no basis whatsoever, and I might be missing snippets of information already canonly publicised bc my brain is crap at retaining information..:

I feel like Violet’s mum or dad (or mums/dads/parents of indetermined gender?? there was definitely a moment when she was thinking about how her family was feeling about thinking she was dead and not knowing she was actually still alive in one of the episodes but the details are escaping me right now) probably were hard-working, kind people; people who would have taught her to always be kind, show humility, always do her best and that the right people would accept her for all of who she is. now, we know that we can hear all this and still feel anxious and have doubts and feel like we’re never going to be good enough. and being an anxious and possibly fretful, painfully shy kid.. life is hard that way. but I think her parents did the best they could to make sure she always had a safe place to come home to.

now.. we know that she moved away from home somewhere before middle school (excuse me for not having the slightest clue of how education works in the US or other parts of the world. it confuses me to no end when there are no simple grades that go from 1 to whatever.. sorry. also possibly part of bilingualists problems??) but I’m unsure about whether or not she moved with her family, or if she had to move on her own to some kind of boarding school - again, I’m sure we’ll learn more about the education system under the IGR in time. but at whichever point she separated from her family and went to live by herself, I feel like her parents would have made sure she never forgot she had people and a place where she was loved.

so.. all that build-up just to throw this tiny little thing into the room - I feel like Violet probably has a patch somewhere that one of her parents gave her that’s some piece of embroidery of violets that they made so she could pin it on whatever she was made to wear, be it school uniforms or uniforms that I imagine the IGR would happily stuff their researchers, and therefore the Iris crew, into. and it’s also my headcanon that when they went to retrieve her stuff and loot The Iris after Violet was onboard The Rumor that’s possibly how they knew which pile of stuff was hers. (or maybe it was just really obvious bc she is pretty tiny and most of the crew was tall people. I don’t know. just.. I like the thought of her having sth personal with her at all times. like.. who even knows. maybe she still had a plushie of some sort left over from her childhood. maybe it was all very soft, very comfy sweaters and thick socks and a home made patchwork blanket. I NEED TO KNOW IF THERE WERE STILL SHEEP ON EARTH WHEN SHE LEFT)

aaaanyway, let’s stop the rambling thoughts there.
