Emily's Failed Promise
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though Emily promised she would try to help out Charlie, it didn't seem like she managed to convince anyone, nor did she decide to go beyond anyone else's backs when this failed. While this can be seen as a wasted opportunity for a good plot, if Emily had tried to help out behind Heaven's back, she could've easily been kicked out as a result, and this would've severely curtailed her ability to help Charlie and Heaven's situations.
By staying in Heaven and persisting in her belief that the Exterminations are wrong since Sinners can be redeemed by believing in Charlie, she has a much better chance of swaying people into changing their stances in the future, a decision proven all the more effective when Sir Pentious ascends to Heaven, right in front of Emily and Sera, to the former's absolute delight.
Despite having promised Charlie that she would figure out something to help, in the Emily did not seem to manage to do anything to support the hotel against the extermination. Considering how dejected she looked before Sir Pentious appeared, its likely she's experiencing quite a bit of guilt at breaking her promise and not being able to do anything to stop the slaughter of souls she now knows is happening.
Considering Sera was sitting right next to Emily, she was presumably keeping an eye on her to prevent any intervention. This may end up adding more cracks to their already fracturing relationship, especially with Emily being vindicated in her faith in redemption.
Emily and Charlie were shown to form an easy friendship due to being their shared beliefs, but Emily failing to fulfill her promise of support may very well harm that relationship as well. Even if Charlie is a very forgiving person, it still might add a sad stumbling block to what was initially a quickly formed bond. While she forgave Vaggie fairly quickly, she only knew Emily for less than a day, so there's a risk that any trust she had in her might be more easily breakable. Although Charlie might forgive Emily for not fulfilling her promise to help Charlie, Emily might not be willing to forgive herself for failing Charlie.

soooo, you know who probably has a TON of Faustus/Mephistophilis fanfiction ideas? That, even if he never writes them, will turn up in his boyfriend's library of all the books ever dreamed of but never written...which may take some influence from his relationship with said otherworldly thought-he-was-a-devil-for-a-while-and-may-not-have-stopped-by-the-1500s boyfriend...
oh my GOD, Anon, oh MY GOD
OAISDAIOSDJS
I need my smelling salts, one moment, OH MY GOD...
...OK I'M BACK
YES, Hob Gadling ABSOLUTELY projected WILDLY onto Kit Marlowe's Doctor Faustus x Mephistophilis. Did he write fic? Maybe, maybe not he definitely jerked off to fic he never wrote, I'm just saying but there are definitely Hob fanfics FOR Doctor Faustus in Dream's library of "books that were never written"
Just... oh my god, look, I've made references across many of my Dreamling fics but especially throughout "Giving Sanctuary" to Hob being utterly obsessed with "Doctor Faustus" and becoming Kit Marlowe's patron for a minute there because of it (which would have been shortly before he died) and having gone to see it so many times that he had it memorized at one point, and it being the first time he had more than a passing interest in the arts or a play (when it wasn't, y'know, his job as a printer's apprentice).
But I will admit, my assumption he'd like it was based a bit on the cliff notes version and my reading of other versions of Faust. Seeing the Arthur Darvill play was so, so vindicating because, uh huh, yeah yeah yeah, Hob was utterly obsessed with this play, and I will accept no criticism.
Like the scene where some men try to kill Faust by beheading him and he ends up just standing there, holding his own severed head in his hand as he comes to life? I bet you Hob absolutely blanched at that scene and wondered if Marlowe had been spying on him during an unfortunate moment (if he hadn't told Marlowe about it himself). Also, all of Faust's misfortunes come from his deal ending when he dies, but he gets a good life until then. Hob Gadling was totally like, "RIP, Doctor Faustus, but I'm different. My life might not always be amazing, but at least I don't have to worry about fuckin' demons dragging my still-screaming soul down to Hell!"
But also just like... the very clear themes of how a seductive, irresistible man will damn you soul to Hell. That knowledge, and learning, and ignoring institutions that try to control you in favor of living the life you want are all sins just has so many layers of what I assume were known-bisexual Marlowe's own conflict with his chosen life vs. his upbringing. And I'm sure those concerns spoke to Hob's own fears around this spectacular life he has (especially in the 1500s) and the lingering fear that one day he might have to pay the piper.
But yes, Doctor Faustus x Mephistophilis is like the original vampire seduction. Hob canonically worried specifically that he made a bargain with the Devil, that play would have raised the hair on the back of his neck but also... Mephistophilis is hot? And he and Doctor Faustus are like weird fucked up tragic soulmates? Yeah Hob had so, so (so so so) many feelings about this play!

Emet-Selch has been seeing something odd the entire time the Warrior of Light has been on the First, but he wants to take this last chance to ask -- before S'ria is sent to Eulmore and the final Lightwarden is faced.
Ao3
"Well, fancy seeing you here."
Emet-Selch's voice made S'ria nearly jump out of his skin – namely because he'd been alone in the Pendants hallway a moment prior. S'ria fixed him with a particularly unimpressed look.
"Was there something you wanted?"
"I'm merely curious about your thoughts on my little lesson earlier."
Ah, yes. The rather dramatic explanation of the shards and their nature, visuals included.
"It made a certain measure of sense." Upon being flatly regarded for several moments, S'ria spoke up again with exasperation. "What, do you want me to say something else?"
"I simply thought someone of your unique nature would have more opinions on it." He made an elaborate shrug, adopting a faux-casual tone. "Speaking of which... I have a question I've been meaning to ask you."
S'ria sighed and leaned against the wall. "I can't stop you from asking, but I won't promise an answer."
"Is the middle of a hallway where you'd prefer to have this conversation? You don't seem too keen to be overly candid with your supposed allies. As fascinating as that is, I am trying to be accomodating of your quirks." He frowned at S'ria after moment with no response. "If it was unclear, I was hoping you would invite me in to your quarters – 'tis only proper courtesy."
S'ria's body betrayed an increasing amount of anxiety and Emet-Selch wondered if he knew how obvious it was. "Well, I suppose I'll thank your 'proper courtesy' for not simply approaching me in my room to begin with." He opened the door and gave Emet-Selch an unreadable look. "If you have any untoward intentions, I'd heavily recommend not acting on them."
Any response Emet-Selch would've given died under the brief wave of murderous intent rolling off of S'ria. There and then gone in a flicker. He raised an eyebrow and waited for Emet-Selch to walk in first, the message coming across loud and clear – I'm not turning my back on you.
S'ria seemed ill-at-ease with someone else in his personal quarters, hovering awkwardly near the door. His eyes flickered into the far corner of the room a few times, as if seeing something that distracted him.
Ill-at-ease barely covered it, actually. He looked as though he was about to crawl out of his skin if Emet-Selch stayed a single second longer than necessary.
"Okay? Get on with it."
Emet-Selch pushed down the urge to act insulted by the blunt hostility. "You remember my explanation, I take it, of you and your fellow Source-mate's boon? Six entire parts more whole than the inhabitants of this wretched shard."
"You've made your disdain very clear, yes."
"Yes, yes – Then I'll ask this plainly. What in Zodiark's name is wrong with your soul? Not the Light, deeper than that."
"Excuse me?" S'ria looked so baffled that the fear almost dropped from his features.
"The rejoined parts, they're supposed to be seamless, but you've gone and…done what, exactly?" Emet-Selch looked, somehow, genuinely disturbed. "It's not very plain to see but the closer I look – it's like you've been re-Sundered along new faults."
S'ria couldn't think of any response but to laugh – half hysteria, half genuine vindication at knowing something the Ascian doesn't.
"Oh, is that all? Get out."
"What, I haven't earned so much as a mere –"
"Get out."
Emet-Selch raised his hands in supplication and stepped backwards into darkness, leaving S'ria alone in his room again.
Mostly alone, anyway.
Ardbert had been looking at him with more than a little concern and judgment from the moment he'd let Emet-Selch into the room. He watched the spot where the man had disappeared with no small amount of distrust, before turning back to S'ria with a nervous laugh.
"Hey, it's your room, but if you want to bring someone back here, let me know so I can give you some privacy."
S'ria abruptly looked somewhat nauseous.
Ardbert cringed. "Okay, noted, that was rather in poor taste. Sorry."
S'ria sighed and waved him off. "It's not… you don't need to worry about that happening." He dropped to the floor and pulled his knees up to his chest, trembling settling into his body. "This was a mistake, I don't know if I can sleep here tonight. It feels like I gave him permission or something." His breathing quickened and his shifted his arms up to hide his face.
"Good thing you've got an invisible watchdog, then."
That snapped S'ria out of his spiral. "Huh?"
"S'ria, I don't sleep, no one can see me, and I have the ability to start making really loud noises right next to you. No one will get the drop on you while you're resting."
S'ria lifted his head and smiled shakily at him with a look that suggested he might start crying, and gods did Ardbert hope that didn't happen. He'd really be way out of his depth.
Oh, who was he kidding. He'd been out of his depth for a long time now.

Film Review
The Shining
(Subtle) "The Shining" (softly) If you're someone who's never heard of a film and happens to watch it in the cinema, you probably won't be impressed. After all, in murder plots, movies tend to whisper. But why would a single word unsettle you? What does it mean? Is "The Shining" in the film about the cycle of death, or is it about the maze leading to the unknown, confinement, despair, and madness? When people slaughter Native Americans in the name of justice, when people, driven by desire, find themselves trapped in a maze and resort to cannibalism, when a hotel caretaker murders his family, and ultimately when a mad writer sells his soul for fleeting power and greed, ascending into the maze only to perish in desperate flashes of light.
I find this film to be nothing short of a poem, with its marvelous composition, cleverly arranged eeriness, and psychological implications woven through intricate details. With its flawless screenplay, every scene advances the plot seamlessly, making the lengthy narrative feel remarkably compact. Even the criticized opening scene, ingeniously linked through road layouts and shots of the hotel, focuses on those fleeing, cars with lights on in the daytime, and those stopped, cars involved in accidents; amidst eerie settings, the protagonist journeys toward the hotel of horrors. Swiftly, through several key scenes — a count that can be tallied on two hands — all the keys to the film are presented, leaving the rest to the viewer's interpretation.
Like the arrangement of horror in haiku, even the answers are extended through off-screen implications. How can such a film not provoke thought? How can one not reminisce about the characters? I truly admire the director for effortlessly condensing countless scenes, efforts, and reshoots into this two-and-a-half-hour masterpiece. What mastery it requires! Truly worthy of a maestro.
However, truth be told, I don't consider "The Shining" to be a film that truly encapsulates his efforts, considering it's based on Stephen King's novel. With its abundant conflicts of gender and race, what significance does such content hold for him? Is the entire film crafted merely for those two insignificant and irrelevant pedophilic episodes? Or is it a discourse on conspiracy theories, hinting at the Apollo moon landing hoax? Is it the protagonist's hysterical justifications expressing his conflicted desires to admit and deny? Or is it for the vindication of a Beatle?
Yet amidst all these details, the most evident implication seems to be reincarnation, akin to being trapped in a maze where one endlessly turns corners but still moves forward. Either tempted by desire and driven mad in solitude, or gradually retreating step by step, leaving the maze, escaping the labyrinth of the beast Daros. The beast's hypocritical humility serves to sell your soul in madness, dancing for insanity, one should beware of losing oneself. Do not be deceived by the facade embellished by authority, for within the strong lies the stronger, within the weak lies the weaker. Though a domineering husband may oppress his gentle wife, the wife is the reliance of the helpless child, while the husband is powerless before his superior. Clearly branded as a societal failure, the protagonist, amidst the hotel's meticulously crafted compositions, dons a shining crown symbolized by a chandelier, blinded by the power within the crown, he ventures into the labyrinth of authority. Able to surveil his family freely within the hotel, akin to overseeing the maze. Hence, when his wife attempts to flee the hotel, Jack defends it as their abode, demanding, threatening them to stay. But where there's no perpetual weak or absolute strong, Jack loses his way in the labyrinth.
The office scene resembles a voyage of the soul in an office, although Ullman, in his neutral manner, outlines the risks of Jack's impending choices, Jack, unswayed by Bill's guidance, insists on meeting Satan, whether lured by the devil or the demon within. Yet, he is blatantly deceived within the hotel. Initially the one his wife cares for the most, due to the hotel's machinations, she abandons him, plummeting him into despair. Yet he willingly descends into hell, "selling his soul for a drink" (a line from the movie), then signing a contract amidst the crimson toilet, preparing to dispose of his family, relishing in power. It's rather intriguing, as Carl Jung's concept of the unconscious speaks of the hidden evil within human nature. This suggests that those who consort with demons are the demons' cohorts.
However, what I find most intriguing is whether the hotel itself qualifies as a character. If something serves only one function, one purpose, an unchanging meaning, then it should be deemed an object; but if it can change, act, think, possess character and will, then where lies the distinction from a character? Are the two little girls, the woman in the bathroom, the crowd in the hotel ballroom, and the hotel staff not part of the hotel? If the protagonist Jack is part of the hotel, could the hotel not be an extension of him? Seeing the two paintings on either side of the bloodbath scene, the flying bird from "Afternoon in December," the hunter from "Hunting Camp," wouldn't they symbolize not only Jack but also the hotel?
There are many more details in this film that I cannot list all at once. However, regarding the theme of reincarnation mentioned earlier, it doesn't only manifest in the protagonist but also in society. Society squeezes Jack into failure, causing him to seek solace from his family. But from a perspective of racial discrimination, from the recurrent massacres of Native Americans to Jack's final decision with the hotel to avoid Black intervention, society seems to also be squeezing the hotel chef. Could it be that the ability of the hotel chef, the chef's grandmother, and Danny to have the shining is due to their status as oppressed individuals, traversing through women, ethnic minorities, and children, three vulnerable groups? Perhaps the entire film is about the cycle of power dynamics? Who knows? Truth be told, the film is formidable, truly a masterful horror piece, but as for its depth, I haven't really pondered much.

a month ago today, december 19, my dad got a positive covid test.
he got paxlovid and got better within three days.
then he had a paxlovid rebound.
then i got covid.
then i got better about a week and a half later. (i got pretty sick but i did not get paxlovid because i’m too young and not at risk for severe illness)
then my mom got covid.
she got paxlovid then she got better about five days later. she hasn’t had a rebound yet but she’s still in the masking phase so we’ll see.
that bring us to today, january 19, when my 95-year-old grandmother got a positive covid test.
all of us are 4x vaxxed/boosted. i tried to follow the rules. it’s just so hard to do that perfectly. and also hard when your family thinks you’re overreacting when you remind them to follow the rules. i’m so fucking tired of this. i’m tired of being a frustration to others when i want to follow the rules. i’m tired of always fighting with myself about whether or not i should insist on following rules because for so much of my life, the end result has proven my anxiety wrong, and nothing bad happens when i don’t follow the rules. i’m tired of not allowing myself to trust my instincts because i’ve been raised to believe that my anxiety disorder makes all my instincts suspect. and—if you’ll allow me to go wide with it—i’m tired of everyone saying that “no one predicted covid would get this bad!”, “no one thought that covid would shut down the world for any longer than two weeks maximum!”, “no one could have foreseen that the pandemic would fundamentally alter the basic infrastructure of almost every aspect of society for more than three years!”, “no one could have possibly known that donald trump would win the 2016 US presidential election!” because i absolutely predicted all of those things, knew them deep in my soul, but statistics and professionals were not generally on my side and so i was labeled a worrier, and although i feel vindicated it’s hard to live in a world in which it’s clear that your worst nightmares CAN come true, partly because most people don’t even have those nightmares and thus aren’t even worried. oh god. ok. this is quickly turning into an irrational magical thinking/OCD spiral so i’m going to stop but oh my god. oh my god i’m tired of covid.

What do you think is distinctly 'Meyer' about the Host? Which part clearly has her beautiful mind all over it?
I mean, the whole thing is delightfully unhinged and out of the box. Delightfully so in a world where so many sci-fi IP make the aliens too damn human (looking at you, MCU).
It's about these weird rednecks who live in a cave because Uncle Jeb ALWAYS KNEW THE END OF THE WORLD WAS GOING TO COME SOMEDAY! And this is the timeline where, against all odds, he gets to be right. And he's prepared. So, fuck all of you.
(And we can pretty much assume this is most of the human survivors: unhinged hermits who have been prepared for this for thirty years and finally have sweet vindication.)
We then get Wanda being nearly murdered by these people and beaten by them several times in as many months and yet they all somehow become friends. Sort of. And then poor Melanie gets to deal with the awkward aftermath of when Wanda's been shoved into a new body and all the children are still terrified of her because the parents spent so long poisoning them against her and there's no recognition of "oh no, that's just the meat sack. Uh, she's okay now."
The hilariously open and awkward end of "so, are we in a foursome or what?" with Melanie, Wanda, Ian, and Jared. As well as Ian's desperate insistence of, "I would totally love you if you were a dude or a super old lady!" to Wanda who can only respond with "Doubt."
The fact that, when choosing a new body for Wanda, they go for the most psychologically crippling face they can find based on their own cultural human biases that have nothing to do with how souls work. Just, the whitest, youngest, looking woman they could go for and they went "this is perfect".
The aliens themselves and how inhuman they are. That they're this strange altruistic society that acts like superficial tourists where, if they do start considering the sentience of their victims, leads to the implosion and extinction of their race.
It's almost a zero-sum game they're playing, and Earth may very well force them to lose if enough decide that "I cannot survive if it means stealing the will and life of sentient creatures".
The idea of this next generation of humans, growing up under the souls, who may be shipped off to be injected at the moment they become difficult or a nuisance that is never fully delved into and only brought up for a brief, damning, moment.
The insistence of everyone in Jeb's camp that all these aliens they have living around going native is totally cool now, totally, and we're all going to get along as happy friends and never going to be caught stealing massive amounts of supplies by the enemy.
The fact that Wanda is so vital because she's the only one who has any remote understanding of how souls work and think and that this makes her basically Jesus for the group who otherwise is flailing in the dark still thinking about the little green men and projecting human mannerisms onto them.
Wanda having her noble suicide ruined by these people who just stuffed her into another body and the unspoken thought of "these people are going to force her to be immortal and never going to let her die, huh?" Wanda will become a vital cornerstone of this community, one impossible to do without, and I bet you when this body gets old or compromised... They're going to find another meatsack for her for the survival of the clan.
Haven't figured that out yet, have you, Wanda?
It's a delightful book.

I just want to share something really quick, and I'd love to hear your two cents on this.
One of the best things about Collapse (despite its flaws) for me was the Voice not being as benevolent of an entity as Joseph initially thought. That reveal actually gave me a lot of vindication on my own personal headcanons surrounding the Voice before Collapse had been released. And it's something I don't really see talked much about, often times its brushed over really.
The Voice is manipulative, especially on Joseph, and I actually believe that the only reason Joseph was given the visions of his family alive in New Eden was so it could a) ensure Joseph stayed devoted and b) just to give Joseph a false sense of hope and ultimately laugh at Joseph's desperate attempts to keep his family (such as John) alive and for his eventual breakdown over their deaths (I headcanon that the Voice had never intended for Joseph's siblings to survive). It uses its cunningness, omnipresence and ever knowing knowledge to create and execute plans accordingly, and with just how arrogant it is, you just know it expects things to happen according to how it wants and must have a kick in watching Joseph and many others suffer, helpless to its power. It clearly knew what it was doing when it chose to speak Joseph right after his wife's death. I have no doubt that the Voice anticipated/expected Joseph to sacrifice his infant daughter, despite how the situation was presented as a test or choice to Joseph.
I don't even think it ever actually cared if 3000 souls were saved in the bunkers from the Collapse. The Voice definitely doesn't cry a river about it. It just wanted to string Joseph along and play him like a fiddle until it eventually gets bored with him. And just thinking about it makes my heart ache for Joseph even more. There was no happy ending for him from the beginning. The Voice played Joseph from start to finish, giving him moments of hope and peace (finding his family again, being right about the Collapse, New Eden, the Captain of Security's arrival) before taking it away (the Deputy killing his siblings, the post-Collapse world not being as peaceful or fulfilling as he expected, New Eden burned to the ground, and Ethan's bitterness and envy growing to corrupt and eventually kill him) because the Voice is just that cruel.
The Voice is the greater-scope villain. It planned, and inflicted pain and suffering and misery on Joseph (a devoted instrument) and everyone else around him just because it could and wanted to do it.
Collapse wasn't a DLC I enjoyed very much, but the Voice will always be a highlight for me. It's now one of my favourite "love to hate" antagonists. And it gives me a real rush of serotonin thinking about the Far Cry 5 fics I want to write that are heavily dipped in a "screw destiny" plotline just to wipe the Voice's smugness.
Yeah, that's all I wanted to get off my chest. Happy second day of 2023 (or first depending on your timezone).
I like what they chose to do with the Voice in Collapse too! Even though it’s also played by Greg Bryk, the fact that it shows Joseph his future as we’ve seen it in New Dawn indicates that the Voice is clearly not a figment of his imagination. In the DLC, Joseph had no idea what New Eden would look like, that the Deputy would become his Judge, and even that he had a son, but he saw all of that because the Voice is real and omniscient, not just “in his head”. I’ve been saying that “God” was the true villain of Far Cry 5 all along and, even if I don’t consider the Far Cry 6 Season Pass canon for many reasons, I was glad the new writing team agreed with that!
Ironically, the Voice being malevolent, choosing the highly devoted, well-meaning Joseph Seed as a punching ball for its own enjoyment, ruining his life, and never intending to keep its promises (except the Apocalypse, so the death of millions of people) can also explain several of New Dawn’s inconsistencies and why that game’s ending felt pointless. I don’t know if it was intentional and the DLC’s writers thought that “the Voice never cared about anything or anyone and did things just because it felt like it” was the best solution to make everything sort of make sense but, honestly, they’re not really wrong…
I’m not sure the Voice was supposed to be 100% evil and manipulative in the minds of the original Far Cry 5 writers, but I think Collapse was right for showing that Joseph was telling the truth, merely following orders, and that, because of his unwavering faith, had to suffer the loss of everyone he loved. I’m obviously not saying he didn’t do bad things, but it’s important to remember why he did them. Making the Voice Joseph’s guide and villain in the DLC was a great idea.
And, yes, it was the second day of 2023 for me when you sent this, so thank you very much, and happy 6th(?) day of 2023 to you :D

Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
The sprawling funk/soul explorations of Curtis Mayfield display a masterful talent for bombastic arrangements and biting political commentary. The calls for unity are par for the course when it comes to 70s funk, but rather than the both sides-ism of Sly And The Family Stone, Mayfield would like to remind us that we're all gonna fucking die if we don't work together. As for the music, the lush horns, frenetic percussion, frequent harp parts, and aspects of psychedelia make for an incredibly unique album, especially for it's time.
Tumblr media
The Byrds - Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
Gram Parsons wanted country rock to be a thing so bad. He was willing to completely overhaul half the personnel of his band and tank their careers just so he could have his country album. Sweetheart Of The Rodeo has been severely vindicated by history considering how big of a genre country rock wound up being in the 70s and all the conservatives who got mad that long haired hippies were ruining their music can suck it. The album consists almost entirely of covers including artists like The Louvin Brothers, Merle Haggard, and Woody Guthrie. It feels very authentic. Acoustic guitar, fiddle, pedal steel, and honky tonk piano abound as Parsons croons over some decidedly non hippie country songs. It's clear they're being a little cheeky when they do The Louvin Brothers' song The Christian Life after all.
Tumblr media
Gang Of Four - Entertainment!
What's better than angular, funky, post punk? Angular, funk, Communist post punk obviously! Frustrations about commodity fetishism make up like half of this albums lyrical content. But beyond just the politics the music is also revolutionary. The jittery guitars are matched by punchy drums and staccato singing. It's disorienting, it's angry, it's hugely influential. Come join the proletariat dance party.
Tumblr media
Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
This album is completely feral. Half the songs are about people dying horrifically and there's a seventeen minute jam describing an orgy. No joke for real content warning ⚠️ this album features a very stark and realistic portrayal of how trans people were treated back in the 60s. We have to talk about Lady Godiva's Operation. It's a song about a transgender woman dying in the operating table due to a botched lobotomy. It's brutal and has always been one of the only songs that really scares me. The song's attitude is intensely sympathetic to it's subject, the only hint of Lady Godiva's trans status is one line were a doctor misgenders her and the fact that she was going in for a lobotomy at all (by the 60s they were mainly reserved for gay men and trans women). The humanity of the character in the first half of the song versus the indifference of the doctors in the latter half is an incredibly succinct condemnation of how society treated queer people at the time. ⚠️ Ok content warning over y'all can open your eyes again. Putting the subject matter aside White Light/White Heat is musically unhinged. The guitars are so scrungy and fuzzed out that it can be hard to understand what's going on. Songs like Here She Comes Now and the title track are basically 50s rock and roll with the most fucked up guitars imaginable. The Gift, Lady Godiva's Operation, and Sister Ray are weird droning things with mostly spoken word lyrics. And the guitar solos on Sister Ray are beyond punk and more like noise rock or even just noise. This album is not for everyone, hell it might not be for anyone, but I really like it. I have a soft spot for weird anomalies.
Tumblr media
Mary J. Blige - What's The 411?
I'm usually pretty harsh on lengthy 90s R&B fuck jams, but this album is really good at being that thing. 92 was probably the exact time for a funky Hip hop influenced R&B album to be really good by my standards specifically. The beats, produced by Puff Daddy, are very reminiscent of late 80s style hip hop and the vocals are spaced out, very echoey. They combine nicely to create an effect where the vocals encompass you while the beats hit you in the face. A lot of the songs structure are more focused on layering vocals to create a sound more similar to P-Funk than soul, it stops the longer tracks from being boring since they need the four to five minutes length to explore those layers.
Tumblr media
Kacey Musgraves - The Golden Hour
Unbelievably boring. I don't care at all about this album. Did you know that Weird Al also has a song called Velvet Elvis? It's basically the exact same song but it's a joke and it came out in the 80s.

Something familiar on the horizon...
There’s a stillness in the air, a leaden silence that settles over everything like the dust motes that catch the waning afternoon sun. You were tasked with sweeping the floor and putting the chairs up for today, you and another classmate whose name you never bothered to remember, but the minute school was let out, they took off, not even bothering to come up with a halfhearted excuse and saddling you with all the work.
It’s nothing new. That’s how it’s been for the past year. So you swallow your resentment and grab a broom.
You could just leave. There’s nothing stopping you, except that your homeroom teacher will probably find any excuse to reprimand you tomorrow morning. A minute of vindication now wouldn’t be worth the harassment you’d receive for it tomorrow.
Now you sit, empty classroom clumsily swept and chairs in their proper places except for yours. You’re not sure how to feel. Not sad, that’s for certain, but there’s a hollowness in the pit of your chest at the knowledge that there’s only a couple of weeks left before you finally leave this cesspool for good.
Tomorrow looms uncertain and foreboding, but you’ve come too far to back out now. Whether you leave school with your head held high or hung in shame remains to be seen, but if it’s the latter, you imagine life among your classmates will become even more unbearable than it already is.
The shadows steadily grow longer while you quietly reflect on the past year. None of it was pleasant. You’re long past the point of thinking about the ‘what-ifs’. You’ve lost count of how many times you had to remind yourself that you can’t change the past, and even if you could, you don’t think you would, armed with the knowledge you have now. And yet, you don’t fight the pangs of loneliness or the occasional twinge of bitter resentment over how it all turned out. Of course you have regrets—who wouldn’t?
‘Maybe it’s better this way,’ you think, resigned.
Still, there comes a point where even you find yourself tired of slogging through one day to another, wondering when your next respite will come and being disappointed (though not surprised) when it never does. You want to feel something that doesn’t make your soul die a little inside, something that doesn’t come with clenched jaws and a hardened resolve.
It’s been more than a year since you’ve felt something approximating happiness. You used to associate the word with warmth from your mother’s embrace and the pale yellow of your beloved omurice that became lunch after a memorable morning of well intentioned, but ultimately botched pancakes. You used to think ‘happiness’ and your mother’s smile would come to mind, beautiful and radiant like the sunlight glimmering across gentle ocean waves while she walked with you hand in hand over soft sand that felt good between your bare little toes.
But that was so long ago and you’re nothing like the little girl you were back then. Now you’re not sure what the word means to you anymore.
You rise with a muted groan, stretching to get the kinks out before putting your chair on your desk and walking out, bag slung over your shoulder. Hardly anyone remains now save for those staying behind for club activities, but you’re not too worried about running into them.
A sleek black car idles a few streets from the school gate, a familiar and welcome sight hidden away from any nosy parasites. You get in, nodding to the well-dressed driver who inclines his head respectfully and you’re on your way. The radio’s set to some random pop station, and while you don’t recognize the artist, it fills the silence as you pass building after building before giving way to the coast, incandescent in the orange sun.
You close your eyes, easing back onto the seat as the gentle notes of an acoustic guitar wash over tired muscles that finally begin to relax.
Several thoughts float through your head, some mundane like debating the merits of getting some last-minute studying before your upcoming entrance exam or resting. Others are more loaded, like wondering if your mother will be home, and if she is, what kind of state you’ll find her in.
You find it sad that you can’t decide which one you prefer.
Your relationship with your mother wasn’t always bad. By all accounts, she did her best with the limited time she had with you in the beginning. She even took you seriously when one afternoon, your little four-year-old self came toddling straight into her arms, face already soaked with snot and tears because you didn’t understand why not having a father made all the other kids in your class make fun of you. You remember how quiet she had gotten, the soothing hand running through your hair so at odds with the thundering fury raging in her eyes.
Then your mother sat you down when you wouldn’t stop asking questions and said, “Oh honey, you do have a daddy. He’s just working in America right now.”
“Then why doesn’t he come back?” you cried, little fists clutching the front of her dress.
Not long after that, you began attending a new school with new classmates that were a little less nosy, where you found friendship with a nice girl who smelled like flowers.
As to whether or not your father really was working in the states, well…you never did get an answer to that one.
A new song begins, an eclectic fusion of jazzy and lo-fi that grabs your attention at once. It’s catchy and after a few seconds of listening, you find yourself tapping your fingers on the seat.
Then a resonant voice, subdued to match the tone of the song but clearly powerful, jumps in and suddenly puts a halt to your wandering thoughts. Your lungs freeze at the flicker of recognition. Jerking upright, you snarl, “Turn that off.”
“Young miss?” The driver, who’s been silent this whole time, glances at you through the rear view mirror.
“I said TURN IT OFF!” you scream, slamming your fist against the side of the door. He does as he’s told and now the only thing filling the air is the near-silent rumble of the engine and your heart pounding a furious rhythm in your ears. You exhale slowly, swallowing against the awkward tension in the air, but it fails to drive away the complicated mix of feelings upon hearing your mother’s voice on the radio.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget.
Less easy is seeing the sight of so many cars along the winding path to your house, which looms overhead like a behemoth and blocks out the dying afternoon sun. Stomach churning uneasily as you step out and walk up to the huge ornate doors, you take note at the lack of reception upon entering the foyer.
Footsteps echoing on polished marble floors, your nose scrunches at the pungent odor of different colognes and perfumes lingering in the air, however faint. Heart curling into itself against your will at the implications of what you might find, you trudge through one wing of the house to another.
You turn right at the end of a hallway that opens to a large empty courtyard and through the open doors beyond, in the expansive flower garden outside, a crowd of people swells with noise and raucous laughter, like a massive ugly beast...
-------
A preview of a rewrite of my first fic to get back into writing. It's been a really long time since I've worked on any of my hobbies, mostly for reasons I won't get into because it's kind of a downer. The only depression I'll dish out will come from my writing, not my personal stuff. This probably isn't what most people are here for, but this makes me happy. And I think that's important too.

FFXIVWrite2023 Prompt #20 - Hamper
"And you! Why waste your final moments in futile defiance?"
Really, it was unseemly to gloat so, especially when victory was such a foregone conclusion. In a sense, he felt as if he were bullying upstart children who hadn't learned their place after all this time. Nay, even children could be reasoned with, albeit in rudimentary ways. These mortals were like particularly stubborn livestock. His assured triumph was still as hard earned as wrestling with a herd of keraunoi.
He was awake. Wide awake, actually awake. The first time in decades, he wasn't going through the motions and sleepwalking through this encounter, rousing slightly only to deliver a snarky remark based on whatever tidbit he overheard. No, he was all there, all present. He was absolutely, spectacularly livid, and utterly rock bottom disappointed.
And yet the vindication that he was going to feel as the so-called Warrior of Darkness crumbled into a monstrosity of light was going to be so delicious. Oh but only if there was more of an audience for the drama about to unfold! The Miqo'te would turn, and the direct exposure to all of that light aether would start to turn her allies as well. They would have to choose to futilely fight and risk turning into sin eaters, or find a way to off themselves or each other while they still had a form of reason and self. This sort of desperation, especially among friends and allies, this was the drama that Emet-Selch lived for. If only he had popcorn. His rage burned so hot he could likely pop the kernels through sheer force of will, but he wasn't in the mood to conjure them up. No, the grim satisfaction of watching these so-called Scions turn on each other as they became corrupted by the light was enough.
And yet, the Miqo'te continued shuffling forward, dragging her sword behind her.
"Oh, weary wanderer, you've no fight left to fight, no life left to live."
It came out as a taunt, but there was pity. Pity and a little bit of confusion. Why bother expending the precious little aether she had left that wasn't corrupted by light already? And to do what? Swing her oversized sword once at nothing? Even if Emet-Selch let her drive the slab of metal through this body, it would be little more than an inconvenience. He'd just have to go fetch another.
He could see her soul bursting at the seams with light aether, but she held together like a particularly hardy glass bottle falling down a flight of stone stairs. Each step taken was miraculous defiance against the natural order. A bit of unease gripped Emet-Selch's heart in the same way it would if he were waiting for a particularly overblown balloon to finally pop as it bobbled against a pin. He might actually change his tune a little if she was actually able to swing her sword.
Ah, but the Light would not be denied!
The Warrior of Darkness, radiating light aether like a particularly tiny and purple star, crumbled to her knees long at last. The glass bottle that was her soul finally cracked, and the momentum would surely cause her to shatter. Now here was the grand reveal. The Lightwarden to end all Lightwardens, born from the Warrior of Darkness. The irony would keep him fed for millennia. Several Rejoinings down the road, when his work was complete, he would still look fondly on the moons of plotting it took to engineer this monstrosity.
...And yet, he could not deny that he also felt the peculiar wish to help her up, dust her off. She was---
No. She was not. A poor reflection at best. He let his livid hatred and cruel satisfaction blot out those thoughts. This was yet another betrayal on her part. Even if Xiao wasn't aware of it, Emet-Selch could sense how it was in a way a tiny little bit of spite left over from her.
"Rise up in madness and fury! Devour the vermin infesting the land which is righfully ours!"
One of the fools leapt at him, a distraction easily seen through. He needed but a moment, ah, the little Oracle of Light was still fit to run it seemed. Emet-Selch was tempted to see what would happen, would she be consumed with light as she attempted to seal, thus eliminating any and all hope that remained, or would she make it in the nick of time?
No, it was better if the little Oracle was helped along. With a flick of his arm, he tossed the aetherically impaired one aside and with the return motion sent a blast of aether through the girl's center of mass. It wouldn't kill her out right and deny her turning into a sin eater, but it would prevent her from reaching the Miqo'te.
And then what? Where would the hero turn to next? Emet-Selch nearly wanted to stoop down to see what kind of expression Xiao was making, but getting so close to the Lightwarden-to-be could mean getting caught in the blast. Oh, he would be fine, but it would be a pain in his slumped shoulders and neck to retrieve another clone body at this time, especially when he wanted to see all of this through without interruption. No, better to watch everything fall apart for the would-be-heroes from a safe distance.
Well then.
The fireworks were about to begin.
As Xiao spewed liquid light from her mouth, Emet-Selch could see with his aethersight the very last of her aether, the thinnest bits that were barely holding her very form together, were now crackling with light like the rest of her. The Warrior of Darkness erupted in a geyser of aether. Oh, how would she transform? What brilliant and terrible and monstrous form would all of that aether take on?
It dazzled so much that Emet-Selch had to shield his eyes. All of this brightness was probably a migraine he'd need to sleep off in the very near future. He might switch out to another body just for that.
...Wait...
That hair, that posture, that mask...
Cruelties upon cruelties if the Lightwarden took on the image of---
No. His aethersight was caught up with afterimages again. All of this damned light! It wasn't her. And in a way, this was just one last petty betrayal before the very end of her latest mockery, her latest broken husk of a form.
...And yet, and yet the impossible occurred. The glass bottle struck the final step, cracked as it was, and then bounced once more. And it bounced back whole. The cracks mended. Still very full of light aether, and yet...
A part of him wanted to retreat, to lick the wounds to his pride, to reset and revise. It wasn't supposed to turn out this way, but he could afford to wait the fifty or so years that it took for this iteration of Hydaelyn's defiance to pass back into the Lifestream. Who knows, maybe once this incident was over, the fools would return to the Source and accidentally trigger the Rejoining there on their own.
No. He had entertained this little farce for far too long. It ended here and now. No more would his plans be stymied by this poor retelling of Azem's fate.

DUMAH, ANGEL OF SILENCE
tags since idk if i should post their bio here or carrd
HISTORY
The angel of silence, they called him.  The angel of the stillness of death.
Dumah was a pariah amongst his peers save for the chosen few who’d been tasked over darker matters.  His deeds weren’t held as high in regard as Michael’s or even Gabriel’s, which he often found funny because he was also an avenger.  He used his holy fire to cleanse the land of their enemies.  The angel’s enemies for the concept of their God had long ago faded.  No one had seen him ( or her ) in as long as anyone could remember.  Only the Metatron - God’s voice - could answer such a question.  And he’d been missing since time immemorial.
But because he tended to do it with an army of what the humans called ‘ zombies ‘ it was always wiped from history.  With his power over the wicked dead, Dumah would call their souls to his side in order to repent for the damage they’d done in life.  They were his weapons; extensions of the flaming sword held firmly in his grip.  Each soul was infused with a portion of his holy fire so that they, too, could cleanse the evil off the land.
Light cast over his missions to hide the dark of what he’d done.  Some of his peers called him too zealous.  Too dangerous.  At times it felt like all they wanted to do was hide his lack of mercy.  A mercy that was started to get twisted by a new faith.  As if the harsh reality of what they were was too much for humans to handle.  Not their problem, Dumah would say.  Their existence wasn’t created to make the mortals happy.  They’d been created to hold a balance in the universe.  As there was dark so there must be light.  With chaos must be order.
His vindication over Egypt was the last straw.  On the sandy battlefield Dumah got down on one knee to admire the cleansing.  Balance had been restored to a land so heavily swayed in one direction for generations.  Order settled over the chaos.  Bodies of rotting bone and flesh were slowly hobbling back to his very position for their next orders.  Or, hopefully, to be laid to rest, even if for just a little while.  Yet, several of his brothers stood over him to cast judgement.  Too much, they’d claimed.  The war against the unworthy had crossed a line even Michael couldn’t turn a blind eye to.
So, they cast him out.  He and his two closest commanders.
Over the millenia Dumah took his label more closely to heart.  His voice was only used on rare occasions.  Anything that needed to be said could come from the lips of the two always by his side.
LORE
(  NOTE: Angels in Dumah’s incarnation are a combination of a lot of different media.  The intention is for it to mesh with any other supernatural creatures that we may come across but if adjustments need to be made then we can certainly discuss it.  More info to be added as I think about it.  Another note to add is that this lore will not discuss  Demons at this time. )
There are Nine Circles of Heaven to mirror the Nine Circles of Hell ( as inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy ).  Purgatory exists in the middle alongside the mortal plane.  Gehenna, for the sake of Dumah’s history, is another name for Purgatory.  It was originally named after the valley where the door was placed.  One of Dumah’s titles was to be the ruler of Purgatory.  With no natural governing body of it’s own there was a fear of rebellion when the veil between worlds got thin.  With his power over nearly half of the undead Dumah was seen as a natural fit.  But, when he was cast out of Heaven he closed that particular door so he could keep a closer eye on it.
The circles represent ideals.  Being higher or lower in sphere didn’t necessarily mean an angel was higher or lower in the hierarchy.  Each circle, however, has it’s own governing ladder.  Heaven, afterall, sought to balance the order of the universe.   Dumah himself resided in the fifth circle with a number of other angels that were considered to be ‘ warriors. ‘  The just.  As a commander of his own angelic army Dumah only had to answer to the ruler of the Fifth Circle, Michael.  Beyond what would’ve been Metatron had the deity still been around.
Wings do. Indeed, have feathers in Heaven.  They are also not visible on the mortal plane unless an angels expends the energy to make them so.  Some say it’s because their divinity makes them impossible to see with mortal eyes.  Dumah would argue there’s a glamor at work since they can be visible.  Demons and other supernatural creatures have the ability to see most angel wings.  Power level on each side could certainly come into play.
Powers, similarly, vary from angel to angel.  They guide what an angel’s purpose in heaven is going to be.  They also dictate the circle in which the angel is going to reside.
( please note other divinities on this blog follow the same angellic / demonic lore )

I love that the end of Pride and Prejudice is just the vindication of things sometimes being good, good all the way down. Lizzy struggles the last third of the novel with trying to reconcile what she thinks life is, as a self-professed cynic/realist/someone who is not going to fall into dumb traps that will ruin her happiness, and what she hopes it WILL be as a woman who has actually met the love of her life. And it ends up being all that she wanted and more. Darcy’s love is not only unchanged by all the things she was afraid would undo it, the depth and enduring quality of that love has been revealed to her by those very things. The end of the book confirms his generosity, his heart, his faithfulness in ways she could never dream of hoping for, and in those last several chapters desperately tries not to hope for, constantly tries to talk herself out of wanting or expecting. But it’s all true. He is handsome and he’s rich and marriageable, he checks all the standard boxes, but so much more importantly he’s also good and faithful and sensitive and endlessly generous and the most ultimately solid and trustworthy and good person she’s ever met in her entire life. And she gets to marry him! The fairy tale, in this case, is TRUE; her cynicism--and even her funniest most light-hearted truest jokes about the unfairness of the world were still a kind of cynicism--is not. I love it, it’s everything.

every Bruce/Selina moment is just so perfectly sweet and calibrated. when she asks him who he is under there or if he’s just hideously scarred and you can feel him laugh and loosen up even though he barely responds audibly; when she’s stealing the passport and he holds her back so they both don’t get caught and it’s this struggle but it’s almost a dance between them and on his side almost this strong and gentle embrace? and she’s mad at him but also knows she can trust him??? you can tell she is not in the least physically afraid of him// It’s a Lot.; the almost kiss at the end and the way you can feel the magnetic longing between them, especially on his side; the actual kiss —her sweet impulsive daring almost interrupting his offer to help and stipulations on it, he said he would help and that’s enough for her, his quiet immediate instinctive response to it all the more poignant because he is not a man who responds quickly or to everyone; when he stops her from shooting falcone and it’s the most loving struggle you’ve ever seen and he’s using his body almost like a shield between her and her dad but he’s to the side and he’s giving her SPACE because it’s her choice and her struggle and he’s not going to let her do it but he’s also not going to treat her like a child, he’s just going to BE THERE next to her ready to fight for and protect her body and soul; when he calls her Selina in the kitchen the first time with his whole soul looking out of his eyes just quietly watching her—the immediate naming she has such a hard time with, the sudden, and in a man like Bruce, surprising way he has just let her into his heart; the way his face softens and saddens when she says “we need to talk where can we meet” because he’s been thinking about her SO. MUCH.; when she kisses him again and it’s like sleeping beauty levels of softness and then when he loses his mind when she’s attacked right after; when she says “run away with me” and you can feel her wanting him to say yes with her whole self while knowing he won’t because the reason she wants him to is the reason he has to stay, he is so solid and faithful and TRUE, he is the roots and the steadiness she’s never had and so him saying no hurts her but he wouldn’t be who she wanted if he said yes; when he says “take care of yourself” and means it knowing that she can and will but also saying “be gentle with yourself the way I would be with you;” his heartsick desperate fear when he thinks it’s her at the funeral; the way they ride their motorbikes in this perfect weaving dance until they have to split and go different ways; him watching her leave in the rearview mirror, a final reminder of what she means to him, literally every single Bruce and Selina moment

you know that meme about how extroverts choose introverts to love and that’s how introverts have somebody to love? pride and prejudice is the OPPOSITE of that. Darcy is the quiet introvert watching Elizabeth from across the room (literally) and deciding within himself with calm certainty “that one, I want that one” and the rest of the story is honestly Elizabeth reacting to this revelation with great defensiveness and anger until she realizes that she does actually want to be chosen by him.

good writing, fiction or non-fiction tbh, comes from staring at the world really hard for a long time and then through words trying to reproduce the unseen experience of all that staring.
