The few times I’d cook for a man…
Yes I wrote his name and tried drawing a lion on this meal, bánh tráng nướng. It’s really good and healthy too!
Easy to make as well. Ya need egg, rice paper, and chili oil. Toppings and fillings can be green onions, kewpie mayo, sausages, etc.

Imma start writing and drawing stuff fr fictional folks now. You know I’m crushing if I put them in my art…if you can even call this art

I have always dreamed of travel, ever since I was a little girl watching my dad leave for trips overseas, coming home with gifts for me from places I could only imagine at the time.
But when I became disabled, things got a little more complicated. Before I started using mobility aids, travel didn't even seem possible anymore. I could barely get out of my bed each morning, how was I going to stand and walk through an airport and then stand and walk and sit and stand and walk and sit through the different cities I was obsessing over?
(You see, when you are stuck in bed, particularly because of chronic pain and fatigue, you must obsess over something. Otherwise, the days get a little too long and too painful and the bad thoughts start swirling around you again.)
And so, I still dreamed. I watched videos of people traveling in the countries I wanted most to visit. I practiced different languages. I learned to make different foods. But I still yearned for more.
Once I started using mobility aids, things really opened up for me, especially after starting to properly manage my chronic pain with medicine, PT, and my spinal cord stimulator implant too. I was a very young cyborg who had to charge herself daily and take meds every few hours. But hey, that actually made me feel kind of cool! I was battery-powered, baby!
And eventually, I even had a powerchair to help me go all of the places that my body could not (or sometimes, should not) bring me.
That was years ago. Since then I have seen the temple deer of Nara, Japan. I have visited Gyeongbok Palace and eaten delicious street food in Seoul, South Korea. I have taken a train from New Orleans to LA, then LA to Portland, seeing the California coast in glorious detail. I have eaten Viet-Cajun crawfish in Houston. I have eaten a two dollar corn dog in a Las Vegas casino. I have eaten Voodoo Donuts in Portland. (Okay, I admit, food is what most excites me about travel. And plants! But that's a conversation for another time.)
Now, I look back on this past year and I can't help but smile. I've found a partner who loves travel as much as I do (who happily gets my fifty medical bags, cushions, and wedge onto the plane, and helps me advocate for myself with the airlines). Someone who is strong, and warm, and would go anywhere in the world that I wanted to go.
I wish that I could tell my younger self that it would get better. That this was possible. That I would be able to do all of the above things in a powerchair. And that it didn't matter if I could walk (just with a ton of pain), I still deserved mobility aids and accommodations to help my pain, fatigue, and mobility. I wish I could tell her all of those things.
And that it gets better. Even if it gets worse too.

Portland state university and PCC sylvania have hella brutalist architecture ! And love joy fountain is one of the places the jackass guys did “urban kayaking”. The South Park blocks that the campus surrounds have a farmers market on the weekends.
The Saturday market on the waterfront on Naito Parkway is super mid. Really underwhelming.
There’s a stripclub called the Acropolis off 99e and Tacoma that has really good steaks. There’s a lot of strikes among Portland strippers tho and idk where they land.
There’s a lesbian bar called the sports bra?
Baby ketten klub has karaoke. There’s private rooms but also just one big karaoke bar in the middle. They have this blended frozen cocktail that’s like $6 or smth.
Also rocky butte has a rlly pretty view of the mountains. There’s this weird dome-shaped concrete church down the road from it. Idk if it’s brutalist but it’s fascinating.
There’s also a viet store on 82nd and Burnside Hong Phat. There’s Shun Fat further down 82nd idk what their vibe is tho.
Third Eye is the only Black-owned bookstore in Portland. Def check it out on SE Division. Powell’s books can suck my dick and balls (derogatory)
Mt tabor is beautiful and involves a lot of walking depending on where you park. Worth it tho. My favorite view of the city ever. It’s also an inactive volcano :)
If you really like hiking you can wander around tryon creek state park. It’s next to PCC sylvania and Lewis and Clark College. There’s also forest park but forest park is So Huge. Tryon is def more manageable on a budgeted timeline.
Laurelhurst park off stark st is also really pretty!
There’s a rad food truck owned by queer sex workers at a new pod called little America that’s also off stark street
this is all v cool! appreciate the lovely writeup <3
also the sports bra is dedicated to women's sport omg this is literally laser focused to me. it's an official thorns viewing location too i might catch that away game with fans!

Genuine question, do you actually like Houston or is it just your hometown?
it's a bit more nuanced than that tbh. i understand why it's losing that poll - it's an absolutely massive car-central sprawl where driving on the freeway feels like you're in mad max, it's hot and humid, there's no real seasons, and what used to be a 100 year flood is now an every other year flood. like many blue cities in the south, you're still stuck dealing with the whims of whatever republican pieces of shit that run your state come up with; i've been trying to get rid of them in texas my entire life, so every time this is used as a dunk i just feel tired. because houston is so much more than that.
it's the most diverse city in the country. there are people from everywhere, from all classes and walks of life, and they bring their culture and hopes and dreams with them, and it makes houston incredibly unique under the surface. you can get viet-cajun fusion food anywhere from a strip mall to fine dining. everyone has tamales for christmas. you can get jerk chicken from the same restaurant that you get authentic indian food. street signs are in 3 different languages, and those languages change depending on what part of town you're in. on the street i grew up on in a working class suburb, my family was the only white family - i had neighbors from the philippines and ghana, cajuns from louisiana that grew up speaking french, and a mexican family whose kids grew up my siblings' friends. my teachers in elementary and middle school were vietnamese nuns, who now get celebrated every time they go to astros games (sr. mary catherine, who throws the first pitch, was my math teacher in middle school)!
i once had my alternator die in the middle of a major intersection near downtown houston, just completely killed my car; my emergency lights wouldn't even come on it was so dead. in the hour span i was stuck there, i had 5-6 different groups of people stop and try to help me - a businessman with a suit and tie and cowboy boots, a mom with her kids in the car with her, a guy with a slab and swangas, a car full of construction workers and neither of us spoke each other's language but they helped me push my car to a parking lot anyway. i've had people help me change flat tires, jump my car, push it out of the road, and i've stopped to do all of that for people too. it's a big city, but there's a level of trust and friendliness among people in a bind there that i've never seen anywhere else i've lived. you'll never eat a meal alone, you'll never be lost. strangers will talk to you everywhere you go, especially if they can sense you're having a bad day. people are friendly and helpful and they will shatter your preconceived notions about who they are or where they're from.
houston isn't a tourist town- i get it, i can't imagine why someone would want to vacation there. and full disclosure, i moved away 5 years ago and now live in a smaller city that feels more comfortable to me in terms of scale. but i strongly believe that growing up somewhere so friendly, so proud of its diversity and so strengthened by it, so different from where the places where the rest of my extended family grew up - i don't think i'd be the same person i am now if i'd lived somewhere else. growing up in an environment where you're exposed to so many different people, so many different cultures, and they're all fundamentally your neighbors? i really believe that makes a difference and makes much more well rounded, compassionate, thoughtful citizens. i wouldn't trade the 28 years i spent there for anything.
also if you have access to watch parts unknown with anthony bourdain, he did an amazing episode on houston. even just the opening minute captures so much:

Jamaica
Often combined with rice and peas, jerk chicken is one of the most traditional Jamaican food options. The flavor of some meals is marinated with hot jerk spice that includes Scotch bonnet peppers and is a popular way of cooking in the Caribbean.
Originating from East Indian immigrants, Curry Goat quickly became a signature dish in Jamaica. This dish is included in the Island Bar and Grill Menu in several restaurants. You will find it suitable for breakfast and dinner, ackee and saltfish is Jamaica’s national dish.
Texas Barbecue
Texas, unlike North Carolina, doesn't depend on a sauce to develop its barbecue flavor. Texas-based pitmasters use bold spices to elevate the meat’s natural flavor. Barbecue highlights in Texas include smoked brisket and barbecued beef ribs.
Oil down
This one-pot stew rightfully holds the title of Grenada’s national dish and the best Caribbean Food Houston. Warming and comforting but still packed with flavor it brings together salted meats, vegetables, coconut milk and lots of spice.
Grenadian cuisine draws influence from African, Indian menus so you will be unsurprised to find the roti commonly sold as a street food snack. This whole-wheat flatbread is filled with curry meat or other vegetables to keep you going on daylong adventures.

We had our first date today 5 years ago. February 26, 2018. We found out we lived in the same area after matching on tinder a couple weeks ago, and decided to meet up nearby for dinner. We decided on a Vietnamese restaurant called Em Viet Noodles. It was on a Monday night right after I got off work around 6pm. I had got there first. Walked a little too fast. Texted you I was here first and you said you were walking over. Waited outside the restaurant looking left and right to see where you would come from. A bit nervous because this is first date in a while, first time meeting you. You seemed very nice based on the conversations we had. When I saw a guy who looked like the guy in the tinder profile walk toward me, I quickly looked back down on my phone and pretended to not see you until you got closer. When you were close enough, I looked up, reciprocated the smile you gave me. We hugged and said “hi, nice to meet you” to each other. I was a bit jittery, didn’t expect to hug so soon. You were so friendly. Stepped into the restaurant and we got seated in the middle of the floor. Both our first times here at this restaurant. We got our noodles and ate it over conversation of getting to know each other. I thought the noodles were mediocre. Nothing like regular viet noodles I had before. I focused on you instead.
You were just like your pictures. You were cute. Very broad and muscular upper body. But you had a clear voice. Not so much on the husky, manly side. But it was almost musical to listen to you speak. You had such long lashes that were curled up. I was confused about that. Were they curled on purpose? Are they natural? Can they be natural like that? And then I focused on your voice and tone again. Almost sassy when you spoke at times. Are you gay? But I washed that thought immediately. I can’t remember the chatter we had. But I remember we took turns talking about our past job experiences and a bit of our history. You told me how I remind you of your old self. I can hear how you had believed in me. You gave me tips on dating since I was pretty new at it. You said how to always go on dates that has an outcome favorable to you. Go on dates to a place or restaurant you wanted to go to. So even if the date sucked, at least you got something out of it. You have an example of how if the date is going south, just say you have something else planned an hour later. For sure way to get out of a sticky situation fast. I was amazed with your tips.
After we finished the food, I used the restroom. Checked myself in the mirror made sure I still looked presentable to you. Came back out and we called for bill. As I reach for my wallet you waved your hand at me and said first time was on you. I felt a bit bad and still offered to go half but you insisted. I thanked you
Before leaving the restaurant, there was a witty sticker on the wall near the exit. “Send Noods”. I snapped a picture. As we walked out, we were walking at a slow pace. Not sure where this was going I thought maybe this is the end of the date? But as we were walking and talking, you said if I wanted to see your dog Miso who we talked about prior and I was low key obsessed about. Without even giving it a thought, I automatically responded yes. And then we were on our way to your place. I started to panic a bit. Did I really just say yes to going to a guy’s place just like that?? At 8pm?? With someone I only just met?? I just took a breath and went along. Let’s see where this goes. The streets were dimly lit. Or maybe my eyesight sucks. I turned to you and asked if this was a good date or a bad one. And you smiled back and said “if it were bad, I wouldn’t be inviting you over.” That made me smile also and feel excited to see what happens next.
We walked to 18th Ave and Cropsey Ave and we walked into this corner house property. You lived in the basement floor of that house. Your entrance was from the back of the house. As soon as we stepped in, you call for Miso but she didn’t come out to greet us. You flick on all your lights and head to your room to find Miso. I take off my shoes slowly and lagged behind you. I observed your house a bit. Linear path. Living room first. Spacious with hardly any furniture. Then kitchen was small. Then your bedroom. Looks like you tidied up. Bed was made. Big Tv.
Then, 1 year old Shiba Inu, Miso. She saw me and went straight under the couch. She’s afraid of strangers. You tried to get her out. You put her dog treats in my hand so I can lure her out. It half worked. She ate the treats but dove for cover immediately. You called her out and put her on your bed where you sat down and told me to come sit also. But I refused, as I didn’t want to sit on your bed in my outside clothes. I kneeled on the floor and leaned over your bed and we played with Miso. Why did I thought I caught you taking a peep at my butt. It was fine tho, I had worn my best jeans. We make more small, non memorable chatter.
You mentioned how we should watch a movie and turn on your PS4 and start browsing. You ask what I want to watch and I said anything is fine. You asked me about horror films. I froze for a few seconds. I didn’t want to admit I was terrified of horror films but I had to. But you said I should try it. You decided on It. Asked if I wanted to sit on the bed to watch the movie more comfier. But I still didn’t want to dirty your bed sheets. So you laid down, patted the sofa next to your bed and told me to sit. You put one of your pillows behind me and asked if I was comfy. I nod. You gave me another pillow to hold onto as we started the movie. During the movie, I was intrigued. Still jumped at the scary scenes and hid my eyes a bit. You put your hand on my back and I leaned in slightly into you when I got scared. You held me when I got scared. I felt like you wanted to make a move on me but you were being so polite and just kept your hand on my back the entire time.
After the movie finished, I was a bit spooked. Kept peering into your hallway and thinking about the film. I think I may have used your bathroom. You offered to drive me home since it was midnight now. I was a bit surprised. I thought oh wow you have a car, nice. I said it’s not too far so I can walk but you insisted since it was dark. I asked how late you normally stay up. And you said you can stay up late but normally sleep at 10-11pm. I apologized for staying so late but you said how it’s fine because you wanted to watch the movie with me. I said bye to Miso and we left. Took me out back and we got into your blue Honda civic. I gave you my address and it was so close. It was but a short 5 min ride home. When we got back to my place, we exchanged byes and how it was really fun. We hugged. I don’t remember if we kissed each other on the cheeks goodbye. I think we did. I remember getting home and just really thinking how nice this date was. One of my best dates to this very day. I’ll never forget it.
It’s strange how I still remember two many details about our first date. It makes me happy still thinking about it. It really was one of my most memorable dates I ever had. I remember how we wouldn’t see each other for almost a month after that. We talked for a couple weeks but communication was choppy after that. But every year when my Snapchat gives me a reminder of that “Send Noods” photo I took, I can’t help but smile and think of that date. I do miss you still. But I am healing and doing a lot better now. It doesn’t hurt as much as it used to. I’m still bitter about you at times. But I can handle things better. And I’ll continue to do better.

participatory vs reflexive documentary mode
this week, i will be discussing the reflexive and participatory mode of documentary. unfortunately, i was absent for a lot of my classes recently because of various illnesses, but i am doing okay now. the only reason i mention it is because i was unable to watch more documentaries within these modes of documentary. however, i still did the reading and understand these subjects rather well.
both reflexive mode and participatory mode are rather similar in practice, but are different in subject and application. they both consist of the filmmaker participating directly in the filmmaking, affecting what the subjects say and how everything comes across on camera; however where participatory mode focuses on a subject outside of filmmaking, the reflexive mode takes this all a step further, examining not just a particular subject but the very practice of filmmaking itself. interestingly enough, one documentary can be both reflexive and participatory.
such is the case with the previously discussed french film chronicle of a summer. chronicle of a summer has a focus outside of its filmmaking, life in france during the summertime, but the reflexive aspects of the film are of equal importance and consist of a similar runtime as the scenes discussing life. one notable participatory techniques chronicle of a summer uses is the interview, specifically the street interview. a clip of this can be seen in the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UL6xHgxw9OY what is particularly interesting about this scene is that before its appearance in the film, a largely reflexive purpose of the film is established. the filmmakers talk to their subject about her part in the film and what their plans and intent for it is, they then send her out to conduct interviews. this discussion can be scene under the following link, among other clips and explanation undercut with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxk-fg771r8 the discussion can be seen at the 0:40 timestamp.
a notable example of a film that is participatory but not reflexive is supersize me, in which the filmmaker puts himself through an experiment to prove a point about the danger of mcdonald’s portion sizes. there is no meta commentary about filmmaking itself, but a critique of american fast food chain’s lack of care concerning human life and health. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9__23-zjhM
as far as reflexive documentaries that aren’t participatory, it is a bit harder to distinguish; however, the film surname viet given name nam does not focus much on its filmmaker, but its filmmaking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjkuTAWQ2-E the film makes it clear that the documentary is a blurring between performance and truth, making sure that we are aware that we are watching a show. the subjects are women in vietnam, who the viewer assumes experienced all the tales of abuse that they talk about, but that is not the case. the filmmaker tricks you into trusting the emotions of these women, and then reveals that they were actually actors retelling true accounts of events that happened to completely different women. this demonstrates how some reflexive films will utilize bertolt brecht’s verfremdungseffekt, or alienation effect, which was crafted to demonstrate the audience that a certain play is indeed a play, ensuring that they cannot become lost in its plot. brecht instead wanted the audience to constantly reflect onto their own lives and how what the narrative is telling them can change them.
all in all, participatory and reflective mode of documentary both utilize filmmaker participation, but where one seeks to inform on a certain subject, another wishes to effect the audience’s own perception of their viewing experience.

Someone New
(Written for the maincord game in the LNY event channels! Using the old illegal lore of Eris Street as a viet crane fairy based on Chim Lac and Au Co.)
Grit wanders as they are one to do. The light of lanterns strung across the street bathes Hades into a warm glow. He's forgotten where he put his banh mi again. Along with his right hand. But that's alright, they'll turn up.
The streets of Hades shift, imperceptible to most, but Grit notices. Someone new has arrived in the City and it's adjusting. Quietly.
---
Eris is back in Hades for the first time since falling to the MTs. Faer wings flap with a slight nervous twitch, shaking loose feathers out of them. Scaled talons click on the stones of the street as she wanders through the street where people are readying for the parade. Lion dancers are already performing to the beat of drums next to vending stalls, restaurants and pagodas.
Hades is different from when Eris was a shadow here. Fae's not sure anyone she knows is still around really. Eris sits on a stone bench. Faer eyes scan the crowd for familiar faces and find none despite the familiar sounds and smells. Next to faer is a wrapped up banh mi, not even a bite taken from it. And a right hand. Free food.
---
Grit bought another banh mi now to replace the one he forgot. He's hungry after all.
The vendor smiles with the same black teeth Grit has. They smile back and sign in clumsy VSL. They forgot their tongue today too, after all. Quietly they hope they can find it before Stevenson does again. Stevenson is still not used to finding the pieces Grit leaves behind in forgetfulness despite rooming together for a fair while now.
A smaller figure bumps into them. One with wings, crane feet, a human face and his forgotten banh mi in one hand, halfway eaten and his right hand in the other.
Under the light of the lanterns and amidst the bustle of Têt, it's as good a day as any for meeting someone new.

Session 1 | In darkness you will feel alright
Red Lotus Coterie
(Consisting of:
-Ahn-Ly, lamia, viet-kong veteran and mom of the group,
-Lyonel, samedi, voodoo expert, group dad,but the fun type
- Eli, Banu Haqim, ex-secret agent, edgy kid who wants his justice
- Nela, toreador, bahari, even more edgy)
Before we actually start playing coterie tenets and our shared haven are created (it is a Vietnamese street food restaurant plus the apartments above it, it’s called “Red lotus”, there’s also the “Black lotus”, a funeral home owned by one of the characters and the “Golden lotus” an orphanage founded by the same character)
For the first hour we actually do some pretty productive work for the gangrel primogen
There’s a homeless guy who has some information for us, Ahn-Ly brings him daily meals going forward.
The guy we were trying to find left a ghoul behind, Lyonel gave him some of his blood to help out and is now his new master. The ghouls name is Thomas, he’s very eager but not exactly the brightest (He will be leveled up to a buff gifted mortal, we’re all hyped about it).
Ahn-Ly cleans the haven religiously and does everyone’s laundry by hand.
We found a were-rat named Theodore, by walking into his house because Lyonel wanted to show the rest of the coterie some “cool ghosts”.
Ministry throws the best parties.
Lyonel pranked Eli with some lies about ghosts, it was very successful.

Asian and Asian American Artists on Celebrating Lunar New Year Lunar New Year is the single most important date on the calendar for billions of people in East and Southeast Asia, including China, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam and Singapore. Observed this year on January 22, it marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, with families journeying to their hometowns for weeks of festivities. With over 18 million Americans of Asian descent, the holiday — called Chūnjié in Mandarin, Seollal in Korean and Tết in Vietnamese — is celebrated in the United States as well as globally. And though it’s not officially observed in most Western countries, many in the Asian diaspora keep their heritage alive through traditional foods and rituals. Often, it’s the only tangible connection to culture we have in terms of a true celebration. As we prepare to ring in the Year of the Rabbit (or of the Cat, if you’re Vietnamese), PAPER caught up with some of our favorite Asian artists and creators from around the world to hear what the holiday means to them — and how they plan to celebrate. Lexie Liu, singerGrowing up in China, Chinese New Year is THE New Year for families to get together and celebrate with gourmet food, beautiful blessings and red packets. Ever since my parents divorced, I haven’t found a good way to attend both of their family dinners in New Year because they are in different cities, but this year we are all celebrating in the same city so I can finally be there for both of the families. The foods I loved are Fried Stinky Tofu with lots of spicy radish from Changsha Hunan. I need it in my holiday life. For the Year of the Rabbit, I wish I can eat more vegetables than a rabbit. (I probably do already.) Also, I wanna be as energetic as one, too.Related | Lexie Liu's Got Tricks and Tracks You Need to HearRuoyi Jiang, founder of Chop Suey ClubLunar New Year has always been about family time, relatives getting together and gossip. It means a BIG dinner together, endless amounts of food, giving and receiving red envelopes, watching a national TV program while poking fun at it, and enjoying the fireworks. The past many years I haven't been able to go back home for LNY, so this holiday for me is about celebrating with our chosen family. We are throwing a big party on Jan 21st (LNY Eve)! I do this type of parties because many people like me cannot be home to celebrate with their families. This time we wanna bring street food like skewers into the mix with soup dumplings. My favorite food for the season is 糖葫芦 tanghulu (candid hawthorn stick), it's not a LNY food per se but it's a Beijing winter specialty. My family is very small (just me and my mom), so we normally go to someone else's house for this holiday. My favorite memory is getting dressed with my mom, she would criticize my fashion while trying to have color-coordinated outfits with me. My wish for this year is that China can return to normalcy soon, so my mom and I can resume our annual trip together. I haven't seen her for three years now.Twaydabae, chef and influencerLunar New Year has always been about spending time with family & celebrating traditions to me. It's a time to reflect, wish each other well and set intentions for the future. I plan to celebrate with my family: It's going to be a big get-together this year and I'm really looking forward to having my mom's thit kho and my Stepdad's pho.My favorite memory of Lunar New Year in my home would have to be the games that are played, especially the dice game aka the Bau Cua Ca dice game. And my wish for this year is to welcome more peace into my life and to practice mindfulness in everything I do.Related | Twaydabae Is Viet Girl MagicEden, producerGrowing up in Ireland, Lunar New Year always felt like a nice family ritual — there was never much notice of it in the world outside. My biggest memory is of red envelopes. My granny would give them out to us on New Year’s and it always made it feel like a special time. I actually keep them in my house now and use them sometimes when gifting things to my friends. This year, I will be on tour somewhere in Texas doing my best to find some dim sum. Kim Nguyen, founder of Nguyen IncSometimes I go back home to Houston to celebrate with my immediate family but this year I’m staying in NY and planning on cooking with my friend SK Lyons at their home. Both of us have never cooked pho before so we are going to attempt my mom's recipe. I love literally everything my mom cooks. She is hands-down the best chef I know! Memories that immediately come to mind from when I was younger are playing bầu cua tôm cá with my uncles and cousins (because I was very lucky and always won a lot of money), cleaning every inch of our house before the festivities and playing hide and seek with all my cousins with back-to-back episodes of Paris by Night blaring from the TV in the living room. I read somewhere that this year's water rabbit (or cat) is supposed to be the year of hope, so I'd like to keep that in mind throughout the year.Related | Nguyen Inc Is Making Runway Fashion Statements From Upcycled TeesThuy, singerLunar New Year means family and tradition to me. It means being able to ring in a new year with the people who mean the most and enjoy traditions that have been passed down for decades together. I plan to celebrate by being surrounded by close and extended family. I want to be in conversation with family about our past and future plans while enjoying all the delicacies and treats! I especially love bánh tét! My favorite memory is staying up until midnight to light the fireworks! It was so much fun and we didn’t have to clean up the mess. We would leave the red residue all on our front porch for weeks. The only thing that scared me was how loud they were as a kid! My wish is to live peacefully and wholeheartedly. I want to continue doing what I love and enjoy every moment of it.Related | Thuy Is in Her BagAlex Porat, singerI’m going to spend most of my Lunar New Year days with my family. We’re going to eat a lot of food, especially Tang Yuan, which is my favorite dessert on this earth. I’ll probably also do a lot of cleaning and potentially rearranging of furniture so that I can have a new perspective in my living space as I turn into a new year. This might be pretty silly, but in general, I like moving furniture around way too much. My favorite memory is from whenever I was in Asia as a kid celebrating. Every time I was there around Lunar New Year I would see all my relatives and it was always such a big celebration. Now, living and growing up in North America, it’s such a different experience but I still have such a great community here of friends and family that celebrate. So there are a lot more memories yet to be made.Su Lee, musician and podcasterKoreans eat a lot of savory pancakes on Lunar New Year and my favorite is Mom’s specialty potato pancake that she makes at home. (Speaking of which, I would probably ask her to make some in advance before I leave Korea.)When I was in kindergarten, my grandpa would take me on a ride in his car and buy me toys whenever my family visited him for the holidays. I remember he always had a picture of me stuck by the front seat. This was a very long time ago and yet I still remember it all so clearly. I miss my grandpa a lot whenever I look back on this. One of my biggest wishes for this year was that my sister would pass her nursing exam. And this one has come true already – she passed! I hope this means I’ll have my other wishes come true. I hope I can go on tour again and maybe even be able to play at some festivals this year! I also hope I can get to meet and pet more cats this year.Related | Su Lee Forgot How to Make FriendsSamantha Tan, race car driver and team ownerLunar New Year is similar to [Western] New Year’s celebrations at the end of the year. It’s about celebrating the next cycle and next rotation in the Zodiac, family gatherings and wishing for health and prosperity for the years to come. Honestly, after growing up in a small Canadian town, Lunar New Year celebrations felt like one of the only times I got to experience something from my culture, so it allowed me to connect with my heritage. Today, it’s a celebration that reminds me to be proud of who I am and where I came from. This year, I am spending my Lunar New Year with my mom’s side of the family. My grandparents are planning a big dinner with all our favorite foods, complete with noodles, lots of dumplings, steamed fish and nian gao! Sometimes, when the whole family is able to get together in Toronto, we’ll go out to a restaurant and my favorite dish has always been the Peking duck with pancakes.Dolly Ave, singerLunar New Year always gives me fond memories with my family. It’s a celebration of a new chapter and a special occasion to be with your loved ones and take in all the blessings and future blessings the year may off you.I’ll be performing for the Vietnamese community here in California at a Lunar New Year festival. For me, that’s a special moment to bring to people music to dance to and celebrate to. I love sharing a big Vietnamese spread but specifically the large roasted pig that is commonly eaten during this time. My favorite memory is taking our red envelopes and, in good fun, playing games for each other's money.Photos courtesy of the artists https://www.papermag.com/lunar-new-year-celebrations-2659287111.html
