The starlight catches in her dark braid, glinting off her glassy fingernails. Delicate fingers are outstretched to the sky above, gesturing at some horizon eclipsed by the mountains that surround them. But the comment lands at an awkward angle, glances off of her pride.

A merry expression fades away by degrees, hand dropping anxiously. Her laughter is sand-dry, absorbing what joy had animated her marble hide. Just as it is with him, a mask slides neatly into place. She need not show him such flights of fancy again.

"I do get carried away with history. Can you blame me, when this land has so much to share?" She remembers, here more than in most locales. Latveria has always been an Earthly delight to her, and facing the golden age of its new millennium stirs memories of centuries that have long since faded to dust.

Yet that is no reason to forget herself. Stroking a hand through dark strands, she turns to face Victor again, perfectly composed. She is meant to be his most ardent pupil. How irritating it must be, to see her rattling away like a schoolgirl over ancient landscapes. The whole point of this partnership is that she should face present instruction, after all.

Ok so speaking as probably tumblrs eminent authority on VicHel there is one thing other fans do that just drives me nuts. Fair warning: I am really about to get to ‘Old Enby Yells About 50 Year Old Comics’ territory, and I refuse to be sorry.

Per pretty much every graphic I have seen, the fandom seems to have this perception that the first appearance of Doom and Hel as having romantic potential was in 81s Jumbo What If #9. While this was the first thing to show them as a couple in a potential future (the titular ‘What If’) where Victor becomes the deathless God-Emperor of Earth, there was chemistry acknowledged by the writing room almost 6 years earlier in Invaders.

It was the arc with N@mor and Hel in Axis L@tveria. You know the one. There was a rebel leader in the region who was fighting against the Fortunov tyranny and their German allies. He was a masked local who launched into near instantaneous chemistry with Hel in her Leyna Ironwood persona. Anyway, the plot twist at the end was The Unconquerable was actually a time traveling Victor who was trying to kill the Fortunovs and the enemy army in the region. He took out the spare Fortunov heir and, unfortunately, a decoy of a certain mustachioed monster.

70s Comics, everyone.

People largely don’t know about the 70s Invaders run. Even those that do write off the VicHel as an unrequited one off, or a weird ‘That Happened’ moment in the annals of comics. BUT. It actually got a nod two months later in F@ntastic Four. Hel says it’s as though she knows him from some other life. Victors thought bubbles directly referenced their then recent Invaders romance.

I GET it’s no longer canon and new lore replaced that but like. It’s their actual first romance. You can argue that the Bronze Age only had brief flirtations with the idea of VicHel while the Modern Age’s Th0r #361 is the first time anything solid/modern took hold. But it just drives me nuts that people still write a ‘What If’ as being more plausible/more rooted than a then-canon narrative between the two just a few years earlier.

(If I’m not wrong, that Invaders arc was actually the first time Hel was ever depicted as being kissed. Yet that panel, and the semi-sweet narration over it about ‘Leyna’ looking at her L@tverian friend and feeling ‘not revulsion, not pity, but that she can finally be seen’ should be on those aesthetic posts people like to make for them. I’m right. Yes it’s 70s schmaltz but it works given who the characters are.)
