Should Marvel Be Marketing The Avengers More?

In terms of budget, it's easily the most expensive film based on a comic book. Having spent four years and five films on the project, Marvel will release The Avengers to theatres this May. But would somebody who hasn't watched the movies be familiar enough with the premise of The Avengers based on Marvel's advertising thus far?

The release date of July 2012 has been set for The Dark Knight Rises. Despite this, Warner Bros. has already officially released a teaser trailer, a full trailer, and a six-minute prologue. Only one official Avengers trailer, and a significantly modified international version, have been issued by Marvel, which seems odd in comparison to the number of trailers for The Dark Knight Rises. Even if many will go see it regardless, Marvel should take advantage of this to put their film franchise ahead of DC's last Batman movie.

I'm confused as to what sort of advertising I can anticipate. Since Black Widow and Hawkeye haven't been given much of a chance to shine in prior films, it would behoove Marvel to introduce them to new audiences by releasing short clips from the upcoming Avengers film that focus on the two characters. If moviegoers knew who Black Widow and Hawkeye were before seeing the film, it would do a lot for their characterization. If Marvel doesn't want to drop a new trailer quite yet, this is an option.

Also, I'm shocked there isn't more merch available. With so many children sure to be interested in The Avengers, it only makes sense to release the associated toys and memorabilia as soon as possible. When the Phantom Menace line came out before the film, I recall being so excited to play with all the new figures and learn more about these mysterious new characters that I couldn't wait to watch the movie. It's the same with computers and video games. Video games are a fantastic way to promote a movie, but there has been no word about any upcoming Avengers games (after one was scrapped). Just picture your favorite Avengers characters who aren't in the film getting the same treatment as those who are. The fact that there is such a wide variety of movie-themed video games despite their general lack of quality is indicative of their popularity. There's no harm in getting some products out ahead of schedule.

I get the impression Marvel is hedging its bets for the time being. I think the issue is more about Joss Whedon trying to keep aspects of the film under wraps for the time being than about them wanting to start the hype machine too early and risk it fading out before the movie even hits theaters. Details such as whether or not any other villains or heroes show up, as well as the size of the army aiding Loki in his attempt to conquer Earth. If you want an example of how bad marketing can be for a film, look no further than Wolverine: Origins. Fans panned the film before its release after Fox published a teaser featuring Deadpool (or Barackapool, as the IC called him). As a company, Marvel is probably just attempting to learn from its past mistakes. Especially if Hydra, and not the Skrulls or the Atlanteans, turns out to be the army.

Playdom's Marvel: Avengers Alliance is a turn-based role-playing game that features a large cast of Marvel heroes and villains in a style reminiscent of the original Final Fantasy. Your custom captain america shield and the the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent, made from a small palette of hairstyles and skin tones, will gain experience via battle and can be supported by two other Marvel Super Heroes. To keep up with the opposition, you'll need to research to gain access to new items, equipment, and suits for your agent, thereby altering his class type and allowing you to purchase new and powerful equipment.

Researching these items, training (leveling up) heroes, and purchasing items like suits and so on all require S.H.I.E.L.D. points. Each hero you recruit costs a certain number of Command Points, which can range from cheap to expensive. More S.H.I.E.L.D. points can be obtained by paying a visit to allies, in addition to completing Distress Calls. Combat Distress Calls are a free action that can be used to call for assistance from a nearby buddy during intense battles.

The turn-based combat allows you to use your character's equipment or the heroes' special attacks (which vary by the hero) against the enemy, with each action requiring a certain amount of stamina. You can use supplies and distress calls if it's your turn to act, or you can recharge your stamina if you're running low, although doing so will cost you a turn. Each playable character belongs to a specific class, and that class has an opposing class that can determine the game's outcome if used strategically.

You can also add permanent upgrades to your character's statistics by purchasing "Iso slots" and unlocking them through the game's training system. With the additional power granted by these slots, you can fortify your heroes and compensate for their flaws.

The bulk of your time in Marvel: Avengers Alliance will be spent progressing through the game's expansive story, which is broken up into chapters and episodes. All of your tasks will be laid out before you on a city map, and you'll be able to choose between easy, medium, and hard fights against generic foes. Sometimes you'll be able to send out your heroes on deploy missions, which will earn you a reward after a certain number of turns but will keep your chosen hero busy for the duration. Each mission also features a mini-boss and a boss fight, giving you the chance to take on Marvel supervillains and their minions like Magneto, Loki, and many more! Completing these battles also rewards you with items, such as Deploy Missions, though the rewards are completely random.

For those who like to compete against other players using their heroes, there are also tournaments where you can do so in exchange for rare rewards. If you want to succeed in the season tournaments, you should invest in some player-versus-player items to give you a leg up. The only thing I don't like about these tournaments is how some heroes are consistently overpowered.

Instagram will soon allow select creators to make and sell NFTs

Meta announced today that it is introducing a number of new creator updates across Instagram and Facebook. Most notably, the company revealed that creators on Instagram will soon be able to create their own NFTs and sell them directly to fans, both on and off Instagram. With this update, creators will have access to a toolkit that will help them create, showcase and sell NFTs. Polygon is the first partner that Meta has chosen for this feature.

People on Instagram will be able to buy the NFTs directly within the app. Meta says the process will take place via traditional in-app purchases across iOS and Android. And for now, Instagram is not taking a cut of the creators’ revenues. Meta is testing this new feature with a small group of creators in the U.S. and plans to expand it to more countries in the future.

Instagram is also adding support for the Solana blockchain and Phantom wallet, which join the blockchains and wallets that it already supports, including Rainbow, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, Dapper Wallet, Ethereum, Polygon and Flow. In addition, information for select collections where the metadata has been enriched by OpenSea, such as collection name and descriptions, will now be available on Instagram.

In addition to the NFT updates, Instagram is also expanding access to subscriptions to all eligible creators in the U.S. The social network began testing subscriptions in January with a small group of creators. The feature lets creators offer their followers paid access to exclusive Instagram Live videos and Stories. Subscribers also receive a special badge that helps them stand out in the comments section and creators’ inboxes.

Meta also announced that Facebook is increasing access to Stars, which let creators earn money directly from followers on Reels, live and video on demand. Facebook is also going to start testing automatic onboarding for creators, which means that the ability to send stars will automatically appear on their content. Facebook is also bringing Stars to non-video content, such as photos and text posts.
