HARTFORD WOLF PACK DROP SHOOTOUT TO SPRINGFIELD THUNDERBIRDS
Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Despite Louie Domingue's repeating his season-high 42 saves, the Hartford Wolf Pack lost 1-0 to the Springfield Thunderbirds on Quinnipiac grad Matt Peca's glove-high game-winner. Dylan Garand posted a scoreless 65 minutes against Hershey, making the Pack 2-7 in shutouts this season. The lone Pack shootout goal was by a defenseman, newcomer Adam Clendening wearing jersey #5. In overtime, the Pack displayed a strong PK after Matt Robertson was penalized on a Will Bitten clean breakaway. The Pack had three blocks, and broke-up two plays, and Domingue, was solid on the delayed penalty situation on Robertson, while making a beautiful right pad save on Hugh McGing. He had three strong late OT saves on a stick save on Adam Gaudette, Matt Kessel, and Martin Frk to keep it scoreless. The Pack got a solid bid to win early in OT by Will Cullye. In the third period, Domingue was strong, made early saves on Gaudette, leading scorer Matt Highmore, who was just sent down by the St. Louis Blues, and Mathias Laferriere. McGing and Kessel tested Domingue. Steve Santini had a quality shot with Mikhail Abramov in front waiting for the rebound. Zac Jones followed with a good stick stop on Santini on his next shift. The Pack’s Bobby Trivigno, Ryan Carpenter, and then Libor Hájek tested Springfield goalie Joel Hofer in the last five minute overtime. In the final minute, with 45.7 seconds left, Hofer stopped Abramov. Cullye had a good chance as time expired in regulation. The second period saw Springfield mount some sustained offensive zone pressure. First, Carpenter had two shots five seconds apart in the first three minutes. He was left muttering to himself and six minutes in Cullye tested Hofer. Springfield Frk, Mitchell Hoelscher, and Peca were in on Domingue. Matt Rempe was in front and was pushed away by Griffin Luce (Salisbury School). Dmitri Samurukov had a quality shot at Domingue. Karl Henriksson, made a smart defensive covering the left point as Carpenter had two shorts five seconds apart in the first three minutes, left muttering to himself. Karl Henriksson made a quality defensive play at the left point, preventing any Springfield breakout and keeping the puck in as Hájek pinched in. The first period felt like a training camp period with the Wolf Pack, as they have had seven players traded over the last 72-hours all finding new addresses. Finding chemistry was going to be tough. Not changing was captain Jonny Brodzinski. At 3:40, the Pack had the first quality shot on goal in a scoreless first period. Matt Robertson from the left point. Hofer stopped Rempe on the Springfield doorstep. At 10:03 the Pack tested Hofer with their tenth shot on goal. Both teams had a powerplay chance, and neither registered a shot on goal. Domingue made a save at 12:57 and at 14:23. Newcomer Jake Leschyshyn had a chance with 1:50 to go in the period. Riding a four-game winning streak, and enduring having their lineup changed during the week. the Wolf Pack were ready for an all-important three-games-in-three-days weekend. The first two games are on the road. On Friday, they head twenty minutes up the road back to Springfield and then an hour South to Bridgeport to meet the Islanders on Saturday. Then, they have a Sunday mid-afternoon clash with the Charlotte Checkers at 3 pm at the XL Center. LINES: Cullye-Brodzinski-Pajuniemi Gettinger-Elson-Carpenter Trivigno- Fritz-Jake Leschyshyn DiGiacinto-Henriksson- Rempe Jones-Hájek Emberson-Robertson Scanlin-Adam Clendening Garand SCRATCHES: Joe Lockwood (healthy) Cooper Zech (healthy) Wyatt Kalynuk (unavailable in transit) Anton Blidh (unavailable in transit) Ben Tardif (healthy) Patrick Khordorenko (season-ending shoulder surgery) C.J. Smith (hip area surgery done for the season) NOTES: Bridgeport's top goal scorers Simon Holmstrom and Otto Koivula were recalled by the big Islanders. They returned Arnaud Durandeau, a notorious Pack killer for the past three years. Winger Collin Adams was recalled from Worcester (ECHL). Calgary Wranglers (AHL) recalled ex-Pack defenseman Tyson Helgesen and ex-Sound Tiger Calder Brooks from Rapid City (ECHL). Goalie Jon Gillies (Salisbury School) goes from Tucson to Cleveland. Hamden’s Jonathan Quick was traded twice this week, first from LA to Columbus, and then Blue Jackets moved him the next day to the Vegas Goldne Knights. Quick (AOF), who won two Stanley Cups with Los Angeles has struggled this year. He was pulled in New York despite two of the three goals not being his fault, and his visible annoyance was shown by the 37-year-old exiting on TV. He flew back with the team at the end of a road trip to LA and then was told he was traded to Columbus. Nick Bonino (Farmington/AOF) was traded from the San Jose Sharks to Pittsburgh. Vladislav Namestnikov, the son of ex-Pack Evegeni “John” Namesnikov, now a Maple Leaf scout was traded from San Jose to Winnipeg. Ex-Pack Sammy Blais who was just traded to St. Louis. He signed a contract extension. Ex-Pack goalie J.F. Berube was recalled then sent back to Charlotte by Florida. Adam Erne, (North Branford) was called up from Grand Rapids by Detroit. Pete DiLiberatore (QU) was recently sent to Savannah (ECHL) by Henderson and was dealt by Vegas to Wilkes Barre/Scranton. Fellow former Bobcat Chase Priskie goes from Rochester to San Diego. Kevin O’Neil (UCONN/Yale) was cut loose by Colorado Eagles (AHL) released from his PTO, and heads back to South Carolina (ECHL). The team also had ex-Pack goalie Keith Kinkaid, who just traded and recalled by the Avalanche. Luke Evangelista was recalled from Milwaukee by parent Nashville. Ex-CT Whale Mike Pelech of the Atlanta Gladiators (ECHL) is officially now the second all-time leader in assists in ECHL history, recording three on the road in Savannah, GA, Thursday night. Former UCONN forward Jordan Timmons was dealt from the Reading Royals (ECHL) to the Kansas City Mavericks (ECHL). HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

WOLF PACK DROP SEASON FINALE 4-2 TO BRUINS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack PROVIDENCE, RI – The Hartford Wolf Pack concluded their 2023-24 regular season on Sunday afternoon at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence. A third-period tally from the home side proved the difference, as the Bruins took a 4-2 decision. Patrick Brown drove down the right-wing side before threading a pass to the front of the net for Nick Zabaneh. Zabaneh, playing in his first professional hockey game after signing a professional tryout agreement earlier in the day, beat Dylan Garand at 11:11 of the third period. His first career goal proved to be the game-winner. The Wolf Pack would surrender the game’s first goal for the second straight day. Trevor Kuntar rushed to the net this time, getting inside on a defenseman. Kuntar went to the backhand and stuffed home his tenth season goal at 13:29. For the second straight game, the Wolf Pack responded quickly. Victor Mancini threaded a pass to Anton Blidh on the left-wing side, who worked his way into the left-wing circle. Blidh then fed Jake Leschyshyn in front, who buried his eighth season goal at 16:14. 1:28 later, Blake Hillman gave the Wolf Pack their first lead of the hockey game. Off a faceoff win, Mac Hollowell fed Hillman at the point. With Riley Nash and Alex Belzile providing screens in front, Hillman fired a shot into traffic that eluded Brandon Bussi to make it a 2-1 game at 17:42. Nash, who won the faceoff, was awarded the secondary assist. Georgii Merkulov’s team-leading 29th goal of the season got the Bruins even 5:41 into the middle stanza. Garand denied Mason Lohrei’s blast from the high slot, but the rebound came right to Merkulov at the top of the crease. The All-Star forward smashed home the rebound, sending the sides to the final frame with a 2-2 score. Zabaneh’s tally at 11:11 broke the tie for good, restoring the Bruins' lead. Merkulov then completed the first 30-goal season of his career at 18:38, hitting an empty net to seal the deal. The Wolf Pack opens the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs this Thursday night! Game 1 of the club’s best-of-three First Round series will occur at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, as the Wolf Pack battle the Charlotte Checkers. WOLF PACK GET PETAN PP BLAST TO BEAT PENGUINS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – On Friday night, Nic Petan broke a 2-2 tie with a five-on-three powerplay blast in the third period. The goal stood as the game-winner as the Wolf Pack defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3-2 on Fan Appreciation Night at the XL Center in front of over 6,900 fans. Two quick slashing calls on the Penguins gave Hartford 65 seconds of five-on-three time at the 12:59 mark of the third period. Petan ripped a one-timer by Joel Blomqvist for his 15th goal of the season to give the Wolf Pack the lead for good. Nikolas Brouillard picked up the second of two points (1 g, 1 a) on the night with an assist on the goal, while Brett Berard's secondary helper was his second of the night. The Wolf Pack controlled the pace of play in the first period, outshooting the Penguins by a 12-3 margin. Each side also hit a goal post, as Case McCarthy struck the iron for the Wolf Pack before Matt Filipe countered for the visitors. A late push from the Wolf Pack in the second period led to the icebreaker, as Bryan Yoon roofed his first goal at the XL Center at 17:26 to make it 1-0. Bobby Trivigno wired a shot high off Blomqvist, who surrendered a rebound to his left. Yoon collected the loose puck and snapped it with the netminder's glove for the second goal of his AHL career. The Pack extended their lead 43 seconds into the third period as Petan found a pinching Brouillard. Brouillard sniped his fifth tally of the season over the glove of Blomqvist to make it 2-0 Wolf Pack. Alex Belzile picked up his 31st assist and team-leading 50th point of the season on the goal. The Penguins pushed back, however, tying the game with two goals in just 39 seconds. Jack Rathbone made an excellent play in the slot, waiting out a Wolf Pack defender before breaking Louis Domingue's shutout bid at 7:58 to give the visitors some life. Austin Rueschhoff then evened the game as he muscled his way to the blue paint before stuffing home a rebound to make it a 2-2 hockey game. The club's timely five-on-three goal at 13:22 of the third period would be the difference, as the Pack's answer was too much for the Penguins. The victory was the Wolf Pack's second in a row against the Penguins, as the sides split the season series with three wins each. The home team went 6-0-0-0 in the head-to-head matchup. Thanks to the victory, the Wolf Pack now have an eleven-game (9-0-1-1) point streak at home against the Penguins. Hartford concludes the 2023-24 regular season with road games against regional rivals. Tomorrow night, the Pack heads north to the MassMutual Center to take on the Springfield Thunderbirds. The puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m., and coverage will be available on both AHLTV and Mixlr. Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT—The Hartford Wolf Pack have punched their ticket to the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs. The club is heading back to the dance following back-to-back victories over the weekend, its first consecutive victories since early March. With three games to go in the season, the Wolf Pack will look to lock up seeding and set the tone for a showdown with one of three division rivals. Friday, April 12th, 2024, Vs. Springfield Thunderbirds (5-3 W): The Wolf Pack snapped a six-game overall losing streak, five-game skid at home, and four-game losing streak head-to-head against the Thunderbirds on Friday night. The victory also officially clinched the Wolf Pack a spot in the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs. Riley Nash and Mathias Laferriere traded goals in the opening period before the Pack took control of the game in the middle stanza. Alex BelzBelzile'sg-range shot beat Colten Ellis at 6:41 of the second period, giving the Pack a lead they never lost. Jake Leschyshyn tipped in a Nikolas Brouillard shot at 10:30 to make it a 3-1 game; then Blake Hillman made it 4-1 with a shot through traffic at 18:18. The T-Birds struck twice in 81 seconds to make it a 4-3 tilt early in the third period. Mikhail Abramov converted on a breakaway at 6:34, then Adam Gaudette took an excellent feed from Joseph Duszak and potted his 41st goal of the season at 7:55. The Pack killed the clock in the final minutes with suffocating defensive play and plenty of offensive zone time. Louis Domingue then sealed the deal at 19:37, hitting an empty net for his first career goal and the second goalie goal in Wolf Pack history. Sunday, April 14th, 2024, Vs. Charlotte Checkers (5-2 W): For the first time since January 10th, 2020, the Wolf Pack claimed a regulation victory on home ice against the Charlotte Checkers on Sunday. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Checkers overall and a six-game skid on home ice dating back to October 29th, 2022. Casey Fitzgerald opened the scoring for the visitors just 43 seconds into the second period, scoring on a beautiful individual effort. The goal, FitzFitzgerald'srth of the season, marked the seventh time in eight meetings that the Checkers struck first. The Pack responded with a powerplay goal at 9:06, as Adam Sýkora fired a shot into traffic that eluded Spencer Knight. The goal was SýkoSýkora'shth of the season and first in ten games. Brett Berard then snapped a shot by Knight from the left-wing circle on a five-minute powerplay at 14:33, giving the Pack their first lead in six games over the Checkers. Initially, the call on the ice was no goal. At the next stoppage, the officials reviewed the play and determined that the puck hit the back bar and rocketed out, giving Berard his team-leading 25th goal. Adam Edström scored the game-winning goal at 16:28, converting a shorthanded breakaway for his tenth goal. Edström waited out Knight before lifting a backhander over the goaltender for the club's tenth shorthanded goal of the season. Jaroslav Chmelař made it 4-1 3:55 into the third period, scoring his first professional goal on a breakaway. At 6:36, Berard found Brennan Othmann at the back door, making it 5-1. After a nifty feed from Berard, Othmann tapped his 19th goal of the season into the net. Rasmus Asplund scored at 13:13 to make it a 5-2 game, but two late penalty kills by the Wolf Pack cemented the clubclub'sst victory against the Checkers this season. GARAND STOPS 31 WOLF PACK STILL LOSE TO CHECKERS 2-1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack CHARLOTTE, NC – Dylan Garand turned in a terrific performance on Tuesday night, stopping 31 shots to help the Hartford Wolf Pack bank a point at the Bojangles Coliseum. Ultimately, it would not be enough as the Checkers prevailed with their second consecutive 2-1 overtime victory in the season series. For the second time in as many games, Mackie Samoskevich would play the role of overtime hero. Samoskevich collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and entered the offensive zone on the right-wing side. The rookie forward worked his way into the right-wing circle and launched a shot over Dylan Garand's glove for his 17th goal of the season. The goal was the third overtime game-winner of Samoskevich's season. Anton Blidh nearly opened the scoring in the opening period, striking the crossbar. Adam Edström bullied his way into the offensive zone on the left-wing side, then sent a pass to Blidh down the middle. Blidh got a piece of the puck but struck the iron behind Magnus Hellberg. Late in the period, the Checkers drew first blood. Patrick Giles intercepted an outlet pass in the neutral zone and entered the zone on the right-wing side. Giles used a body in front as a screen and snapped a shot by Garand at 14:37 to give the Checkers a 1-0 lead. The Wolf Pack drew the game even 9:04 into the second period, as Karl Henriksson scored his second goal against the Checkers this season. With the Checkers pressuring in the Wolf Pack zone, Edström poked a puck down the ice and into the Charlotte zone. Brennan Othmann won a foot race for the puck and slid a pass to Henriksson. Henriksson fought his way into the slot and lifted a shot over Hellberg's glove for his tenth goal in the campaign. Garand was terrific in the period, making twelve saves to keep the game tied 1-1 through 40 minutes. Each team had multiple chances to break the tie in the final frame, but neither could. The Checkers had two powerplays in the period but couldn't solve Garand on ten shots. The Wolf Pack got a powerplay of their own but were denied nine times by Hellberg. For the second straight game, the teams required overtime to determine a winner. For the second straight game, Samoskevich did the honors, giving the Checkers the key second point. Despite the loss, the Wolf Pack extended their point streak to six games (3-0-2-1). The club has also collected points in three straight visits to the Coliseum (2-0-1-0). The Wolf Pack conclude their three-game road trip tomorrow night when they get a rematch with the Checkers. By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT—The Hartford Wolf Pack scored three of a possible four points over the weekend, extending their current point streak to five games (3-0-1-1). Thanks to their three points over the weekend, the Wolf Pack is tied with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for third place in the Atlantic Division. The Pack spent Monday morning traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they will meet the Checkers on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Friday, March 8th, 2024, Vs. Providence Bruins (7-4 W): The Wolf Pack tied their season high for both goals (seven) and powerplay goals (four) in a single game on Friday night. The Pack roared out to a 6-0 lead, blowing away the Bruins to take a 5-4 edge in the ten-game season series. Brett Berard scored the first hat trick of his professional career, scoring three times on the powerplay. He struck at 7:26 and 14:20 of the first period and made it 5-0 2:35 into the middle frame. Berard's three powerplay goals tie a franchise record for powerplay goals in a single game. Andrew Hutchinson was the last to do in on February 8th, 2008, against the Bruins. Ryan Callahan had previously done it twice. Berard's hat trick goal also stood as the game-winning goal, his team-leading eighth of the season. Alex Belzile also notched three points in his return to the lineup, scoring a goal and two assists. Blade Jenkins and Nikolas Brouillard scored a goal and an assist in the win, while Matej Pekar, Brennan Othmann, and Mac Hollowell recorded two helpers. However, William Dufour tied the game with a shot from the right-wing faceoff circle at 12:03. Dufour's 13th goal of the season would force an overtime period, the second in as many meetings at Total Mortgage Arena between the sides. The Wolf Pack got an early penalty kill in overtime, then nearly won the game when Brouillard set up Berard on a two-on-zero. Jakub Skarek made a terrific save, keeping the Islanders alive and forcing a shootout. In the shootout, Matthew Maggio and Petan both scored to make it 1-1, entering the bottom half of the third round. WOLF PACK FALL 3-2 TO ISLANDERS IN THE SHOOTOUT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack BRIDGEPORT, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack struck twice in the third period on Saturday night to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead at the Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport. However, the lead lasted only 1:22 as the Islanders tied it up and eventually won it 3-2 in the shootout. Ruslan Iskhakov dazzled in the bottom half of the shootout's third round, going behind the back and beating Dylan Garand for victory. Iskhakov's goal broke a 1-1 tie in the third round, giving the Isles a 2-1 edge in the skills competition. The first 20 minutes of the game passed without much in the way of scoring chances, as both teams played a responsible defensive game. Garand made eleven saves in the frame, while Jakub Skarek turned aside five bids from the Wolf Pack. Each team got a late powerplay in the first period, but both teams would take penalties to negate their skater advantages. The Islanders broke through 5:05 into the second period, as a bad break for the Wolf Pack ended up in the back of the net. Brandon Scanlin inadvertently lost his balance when hitting a discarded stick in his own zone, resulting in a turnover. William Dufour found the loose puck and sent a pass to Brian Pinho, who polished off the play for his sixth goal of the season. Alex Belzile drew the Wolf Pack even 6:48 into the third period, jamming home a rebound for his 16th goal of the season. Nic Petan's shot from the high slot was denied by Skarek but popped to the top of the crease. Belzile found the rebound and beat Skarek to tie the contest. 3:53 later, the Wolf Pack took a 2-1 lead when Jake Leschyshyn converted a pass from Adam Edström for his sixth goal of the season. Edström muscled into the zone and set up Leschyshyn directly before Skarek. 82 seconds later, however, Dufour evened the affair with a goal from the right-wing circle. His shot snuck over Garand's shoulder at 12:03 of the third period, forcing an eventual overtime. After the Wolf Pack killed off a too many men of the ice penalty early in overtime, Brett Berard had an opportunity to end the game. Skarek's right pad stoned him; however, he sent the game to a shootout. Matthew Maggio opened the shootout with a goal in the bottom half of the first round, the only tally through four shooters. Petan tied the shootout in the top half of the third round, snapping a shot by Skarek's glove. Iskhakov's brilliant move in the bottom half of the third round would prove to be the difference, however, as the Isles prevailed 2-1 in the shootout and 3-2 in the game. The loss snapped the Wolf Pack's six-game overall winning streak against the Islanders and seven-game winning streak at Total Mortgage Arena. The Wolf Pack continue their three-game road trip Tuesday night when they visit the Charlotte Checkers. The puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., with 'Wolf Pack Pregame' starting at 6:45 p.m. on AHLTV & Mixlr. The Pack is back at the XL Center on Saturday, March 16th, when the Utica Comets come to town.
