It’s been 2 months since I started my new job and it’s refreshing to say that I’m loving it for now!!!
Tumblr media
Backstory: I graduated vet school and started at a one doctor private practice thinking I was going to get mentorship, but man was I dead wrong. No mentorship. No support. Just criticism and basic bullying. Disrespect of my time. No lunch break whatsoever even though this is a norm in the vet world. The hour drive became exhausting and I started to dread going into work. Imagine going thru 8 years in total of school, 4 years of vet school on an island to HATE your job and question your life choices. I really thought I was in the wrong career. My anxiety was thru the roof. I couldn’t sleep at all. I ended up getting a relief job that treated me like royalty compared to my full time job. 7 months later I get the strength to tell myself that it isn’t me and that I should try something different than private practice. Long story short, I come across a shelter job opportunity and I apply, worried that I didn’t have the skills or experience to work in a shelter I had never applied.... well, I get the interview, I loved it and it appears that they loved me as well. FYI I did a rotation there when I was a student. I get the job. Meanwhile, something happens at my full time job that I end up giving my two week notice, let me tell you it was horrible, the insults, the shaming..... they ask for 4 weeks.... I agreed to it. Those four weeks went by like molasses, the last day I stayed after hours to help, I get yelled at the manager, I finish my work and leave without saying goodbye....why would I?! You just screamed at me on my last day for something that had nothing to do with me. I’m jobless for a month but I travelled and enjoyed the time off. The offer from the shelter comes in along with another offer from a private practice. Guess what?!?! They offer me 2x more than what I was getting paid at my prior job.
And now I’m happy. I love my coworkers. I enjoy work. I love my patients. I still have a lot to learn but I have a great environment to learn from. And I’m not questioning my career choice anymore.

#Repost @vet_argentum (@get_repost) ・・・ Reposted @consultoriobirdsecia 👏👏👏 The Schirmer's Lacrimal Production test is an important tool for ophthalmological examinations in cats, rabbits, horses and especially in dogs, which are closer and closer to humans and these put them as a priority the health and aesthetics of them. This test aims to evaluate the lacrimal production of the animal to detect diseases mainly related to the cornea and the conjunctiva, such as dry keratoconjunctivitis. The most used method involves placing the tip of the Schirmer tape in the conjunctival sac of the animal's eye, timed 60 seconds and rapidly read in millimeters of the region that absorbed the tear, originating from basal and reflex production, being moistened at this time due to irritation caused by the test tape. If the reading is not made immediately after the tape is removed, it is necessary to discard the tape and a new test to obtain accurate data. The reference value in a healthy animal for this type of test is approximately 15 to 20 mm, being the basis for the diagnosis of dry keratoconjunctivitis a number less than 5 mm. . . . . #vet #veterinária #veterinary #vetsurgeon #medvet #vetmed #vetmedlife #veterinarymedicine #vetstudent #vetschool #instavet #vetislove #veteriner #veterinerhekim #animal #animalshealth #animaldoctor #bovinevet #cowdoctor #farmvet #catdoctor #dogdoctor #veterinarymedicine #vetzoot #vetsnobiety #tierarzt #vétérinaire #veterinario #ветеринарный (at La Paz, Baja California Sur) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzPauknAi36/?igshid=1vzoqyq6rpx2w

Emergency and Critical Care Rotation
I have never in my life been further from my comfort zone than I was during my week in emergency. Two hours into my first shift I was thrown into a consultation for a dog with suspected anaphylactic shock. It was my responsibility to triage the patient, collect a history from the owner and perform a full physical examination. I then assisted the vet with diagnostics and treatment, before heading to the student room to frantically type my patient record. The rest of the day passed with me running between ICU patient care and emergency consultations.
After my first 10 hour shift, my brain was fried and I was relieved to be heading home. I had just about reached the door when a dog in cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) was rushed in. It was all hands on deck. Several minutes later it became evident that CPR wasn’t going to cut it, and the decision was made to try open chest compressions. This is when the thoracic wall is surgically opened to allow direct pumping of the heart. Amidst all the organised chaos, I managed to make myself useful by simultaneously squeezing fluids into the dog with one hand and feeling for a pulse with the other. After about half an hour of compressions with no improvement, the decision was made to stop. As all the endotracheal tubes, catheters and monitoring devices were pulled out or disconnected, the heart began to spontaneously beat again! Everything was reconnected and we recommenced compressions. After another 15 minutes and several attempts at defibrillation, the decision was made to let the dog go. What a day!
Day 2 was a brutal 13 hour overnight shift. We began with a CPR tutorial where we were given scenarios (such as ‘a 20 kg dog was hit by a car and you can’t hear a heart beat’) and had to act out our response on a dummy dog, including compressions, manual ventilation, fluids, drugs and defibrillation, while being timed. We then discussed what we did and how we could improve and tried again! It was difficult but invaluable practice. The remainder of the overnight shift was a challenge, both mentally and physically. It’s amazing how even the simplest of tasks can be become so difficult at 3am.
Throughout the week I got to work with some fascinating cases in ICU. The outcome for a dog with suspected snake envenomation was looking pretty grim after several days in ICU and no improvement after six vials of antivenom. Miraculously, the dog went from being unable to move and struggling to breathe, to walking around unaided within the space of a few hours! Another patient sustained severe burns and carbon monoxide poisoning after being caught in a house fire. As Christmas is fast approaching, we saw more than our fair share of naughty dogs who had helped themselves to chocolate puddings, fruit cakes and mince pies, all of which are toxic. Another dog swallowed an entire blowfish whole (see photo)!
About the time I was beginning to feel mildly confident with consultations, I had the misfortune of meeting a miserable old bag who I will name Margery Grouse, because it suits her. The conversation went a little something like this:
Me: "How much mince pie did Toby eat?” Marge: "You saw the vomit didn't you! You tell me!”
Me: “Has he had any history of medical problems?” Marge: "Didn't you read it on the computer?”
Vet: "I see Toby hasn't eaten his chicken” Marge: "Who would eat that? It looks revolting!"
By the time the end of my final shift rolled around, I was shattered and ready for bed. There is something fundamentally wrong with being at uni at 11pm on a Sunday. This week has been an incredible experience, yet extremely taxing. I’ve seen things I can’t un-see and performed procedures I never even knew existed. There were several occasions throughout the week, where I found myself wondering whether I was in shock myself. Most often I had enough adrenaline coursing through my own veins to supply the entire hospital for a week. As thrilling as this rotation has been, I’m definitely looking forward to the less chaotic weeks to follow.

I wanted to edit my other post and say this but I decided it needed a whole post. If you treat anyone at all at your veterinary clinic negatively than you need to rethink the way you treat medical professionals. The doctors are not obligated to give you free advice or treatment for their pet and they shouldn’t be expected too. I saw a bunch of depressing posts from vets, techs and other staff from vet clinics talking about the awful behavior of clients recently.
I’ve been super lucky at my clinic to not experience very much of this. While we have definitely been busier, our clients have for the most part been polite and understanding of our new policies. While there is the occasional client who tries to push their way into our building or refuses to wear a mask, they are far and few between.
For all of the vet med professionals who are feeling depressed, angry, or any other negative emotion during all of this my heart truly does go out to you. We need to continue to stand with and provide support for each other.
I’m not sure what else there is to say but I’m wishing for the best for all you guys struggling with jerk clients

Update 2/12/20: Little Love will be helping countless other birds!!! Read on to see how: Little Love is doing great today! She did well coming off injectable pain meds and is out and about exploring the office when they let her out of her recovery area. Doctors Baden and Speer have been talking about what can be done to avoid this situation in the future for other birds. To perform a very invasive surgery for an ovarian obstruction when the bird is also inflicted with terminal cancer is very hard on their bodies. They’ve been pondering the idea of using contrast dye while the bird is sedated for a CT scan to see if they can get the tumors to appear definitively. If so, the theory is that they’d be able to perform a CT scan in the future and the dye would illuminate the cancer before an invasive surgery occurred. The problem is that clients are often not willing to spend the money to let them experiment with this theory, especially on a “farm” animal like a chicken. We’ve decided, since it will not harm Litte Love, that she’ll stay one more day and have the CT scan tomorrow. Yes it will be expensive. But...it is our hope that it will be invaluable research to find answers for our future bird residents and those of countless other sanctuaries and individuals. If you’d like to donate to this research, we’ll be adding the cost of the CT scan to our fundraising goal and all donations are 100% tax-deductible. 🇺🇸 Oblique fracture in a dog hit by a car. Ilium fractures usually demand surgical correction because they are in the main mechanical axis of the pelvic limbs. In addition, they may cause pelvic canal stenosis and lead to future problems of obstruction of defecation and parturition. In this case, we used a locking plate and 6 2.0mm screws. #ortopediaveterinaria #veterinaryorthopedics #lockingplate #ostesynthesis #fratura #fracture #diariodeumveterinario #madeinvet #noixnavet #medvet #medveterinaria #medvetbr #medicinaveterinaria #medicinaveterinariabr #medvetlife #vet #vetmed #vetmedlife #vetsnobiety #vetsofinstagram #vetmedworld #vetchannel #24hourvet (at Guadalajara, Jalisco) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuiKQ9clKYc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=nxpprzp3acg8
