This test aims to evaluate the lacrimal production of the animal to detect diseases mainly related to the cornea and the conjunctiva, such as dry keratoconjunctivitis. The most used method involves placing the tip of the Schirmer tape in the conjunctival sac of the animal's eye, timed 60 seconds and rapidly read in millimeters of the region that absorbed the tear, originating from basal and reflex production, being moistened at this time due to irritation caused by the test tape. If the reading is not made immediately after the tape is removed, it is necessary to discard the tape and a new test to obtain accurate data.
