30. Describe a fic that almost happened, but then it didn't.

Ohhh man, haha, this fic has actually been on my mind a lot today, I've explained it to three separate people lmao.

So okay, I have this old WIP from last year. It was going to be the next fic I wrote after my first Jaytim fic, I was going to write it on PURPOSE with a PLOT and PINING and EVERYTHING. The WORKS. It was my first attempt at writing Jason's voice too - he's the POV character - and instead I wrote Hurt/Comfort lmao. This fic was heavily inspired by listening to "This Losing" by the Airborne Toxic Event on repeat during February of 2023, and was going to feature a friends with benefits situationship that quickly spirals into Real Feelings that Jason is having trouble grappling with because he's afraid of scaring Tim with how intensely jealous/possessive he gets. With how much he loves him :')

Eventually I'll write it... someday...

31. What was the most difficult fic for you to write (but in the end you made it)?

Oh, Hurt/Comfort for sure. That fic was SO nerve-wracking because uhhhhh I'd never written BDSM before! Not really! Not a full on, planned out scene! And on top of that, Hurt/Comfort is experimental with it's choose-your-own-adventure style two endings, so once I was done with writing Hurt I had Comfort to write as well, lmao. I'm pleased with it, but in retrospect, imo it's pretty vanilla for what it is (this may be relative lol), and I feel like I've improved as a writer since posting it :)

(I really enjoy writing panic attacks and bad mental spaces tho, and I still really like the small moment in the bathtub when Tim is sucked into his short flashback uwu sorry Tim, but I had to do it to em)

36. How do you come up with fic titles? What's the one you're most proud of?

In the grand tradition of fic authors everywhere, most of my fic titles are song lyrics or other quotes o7 Usually they're taken from the song I'm listening to the most while writing the fic, and usually I use the lyric I feel best captures either the vibe or a specific beat in the story.

That being said, Sit, Stay, Speak is probably my favorite original title, because it's out of context spoilers for the story as well as a funny dog pun :D Jason is going to sit in Tim's apartment, stay put, and speak to Tim without realizing it; and Tim is going to speak to Jason without actually speaking. His apartment, his life does the talking for him - and Jason hears it. I am genuinely quite proud of Sit, Stay, Speak, every aspect of it was agonized over, but it was worth the effort.

When it comes to Brittany S. Pierce, people’s interpretations are all over the place. It ranges anywhere from <3 innocent babie <3, to severely cognitively impaired, to manipulative liar who pretends to be stupid so others obey their will (which I’ll later accuse her mother of, but that’s neither here nor there). Anyways, I’m adding my opinion into the cacophony because, despite the indecisive fanbase, thorough Brittany meta is lacking in quantity. Also, I tend to think my opinion is best, as is human nature.

This analysis is rooted in autistic!Brittany, and while its unnecessary since I’ll go through many of her autistic characteristics, here’s a post detailing the headcanon and a medical article describing the diagnostic criteria in simple terms if you’re unfamiliar with the disorder. I understand that not everybody considers Britt neurodivergent, and that’s totally fine - I’m always up for a healthy conversation/debate! - but please give me a heads up if you plan to respond critically because a lot of this is based on my own experiences as an autistic teenage girl, so unmentioned critiques can feel personal fast. Now without further ado:

A Deep Dive Into Brittany S. Pierce <3

Auditory Processing Disorder “APD” is a subdivision of Sensory Processing Disorder “SPD” which is a quintessential element of an autism diagnosis. APD is pretty much exactly what it sounds (haha pun) like: despite somebody’s hearing abilities, the brain fails to process auditory input properly. The APD trait I hear discussed most in autism spaces is the inability to filter out background noises, but Britt seems to struggle most with interpreting meaning from words. Sometimes when people talk to me (“dolphins are just gay sharks”), even though they’re speaking clearly and I’m very literate in English, it sounds like jumbled nonsense (“dulfanz-our-goost-gae-shorcks”). This accounts for what I’m calling Brittany’s “so close you can taste it” lines. Think of her claim that Christopher Cross discovered America or that O is the capital of Ohio; a man named Christopher C. is indeed credited with discovering America and O is the only capital letter in Ohio. As a whole, they often misunderstand things told to them directly, and it seems a lot less foolish if she only understood half of what was being said via APD.

I’m calling the category of Brittany lines that can’t usually be rationalized as possible by anybody over seven (e.g. Rory the leprechaun, storks delivering babies, and anything with Lord Tubbington) the “stranger than fanfiction lines.” Now, I could take these at face value and say she’s tapping into a magical dimension, but I have my own set of autism driven realism issues, so, without a pre-existing fantasy world, I’m using my significant brainpower to twist Brittany into plausibility =D I ultimately think the best explanation for the stranger than fanfiction lines is echolalia. Echolalia is the repetition of words or phrases, and it’s usually associated with autism. Autistic people often reuse other people’s words, and since we usually think in pictures and have various social communication problems, it’s easier than formulating new sentences. Or we just like the tongue movements/sound a word makes. Personally, I quote songs a lot - if you say something loosely related to a Taylor Swift, musical, or Glee lyric, chances are I’ll sing it - and dipsomaniacal is a new fave to say randomly. There’s some evidence for Britt doing this in canon, unrelated to the stranger than fanfiction lines. While Brittany is known for calling him Blaine Warbler, it actually originated from Rachel and the infamous spin the bottle kiss. They also repeat ‘uber weird after Blaine in the That’s So Rachel reading, and the last line of that scene is them talking in time with Blaine, a behavior seen in S1 with Santana. However, it interests me most that she calls Artie a robot, as we see her dad call Stephen Hawkin, another wheelchair user, a robot in S6.

Basically, I blame the Pierces for how terribly adjusted their child is <3 (Mostly Whitney. Assuming Pierce actually has an IQ of 40, he’s disabled too and deserves some slack in terms of spreading misinformation.) In her admittedly limited screen time, Whitney manages to do two positive things: be an LGBTQ+ ally and let her younger daughter do soccer, I guess. Otherwise, she kept the truth about Stephen Hawking from Brittany for 20 years, cheated on her husband on their honeymoon for claiming infertility, crapped in random barns, insulted her husband’s intelligence, publicly insulted her husband’s appearance, and arguably restricted her daughter’s intellectual growth. To be honest, I realize Whitney isn’t that deep and I don’t actually hate her, but if people can hate Brittany for being a comedic character from the 2010s, I’ll do the same thing to their mother in defense of Brittany. Fight stop the violence with violence, baby! Anyways, I don’t think echolalia alone can explain the stranger than fanfiction lines. At least, not without a source. And that’s usually where upbringing comes in.

I’m ruling out nature automatically because there aren’t chromosomes telling people to believe in unicorns. Well, some people - including autistic people (hehe see what I’m doing here?) - are more inclined to believe falsehoods, but falsehoods have to be fed by someone else. With autism, the reckless believing tendencies come from literal thinking in part. Also, since SPD makes processing the outside world difficult, we often can’t recognize “obvious” truths in the first place. My extended family hated watching movies with me because I used to ask questions every five seconds lol. Setting Pierce aside because he seems to follow Whitney blindly; Brittany’s unnamed sister, Sue, and Whitney are the remaining suspects.

I assume Brittany’s sister is significantly younger than Britt because she played soccer with a seven-year-old in S1 (technically she could’ve been the coach, but that throws off my theory that the Klaine/Brittana wedding was child free), and children aren’t clever or mean enough to throw off anybody’s world view so badly :) Sue does seem the obvious answer, but she didn’t meet Brittany until they started high school, and she’s consistently baffled by Britt’s behavior despite encouraging her own eccentricities in the other Cheerios. And that leaves Whitney as the perpetrator, blaming her Scientology and gambling addiction on a cat.

Finally, I do think there’s a few times when Brittany intended for her jokes to be jokes. I don’t think it happens as much as you might expect, but there’s a scene in S3 when JBI is interviewing Brittany about her class president candidacy, and she tells him she’s voting for Rick “The Stick” Nelson before turning to Santana and laughing that clued me in. I think the mentality behind these lines (the “pun intended” category) is best explained with an anecdote from my own childhood.

When I was little - maybe six or seven - I really wanted to be funny. Well, I wanted to be liked, and since I didn’t understand social cues, my solution was humor because I knew my dad told jokes which made me laugh, which made him likable! Unfortunately, as a literal thinking child, I had no idea how to do this, which meant I parroted the only joke I knew (“What time is it when an elephant sits on the table?” “Time to get a new table!”) in hopes of chuckles. This went about as badly as you would expect. After a while, my parents got rightfully fed up with this joke and got me a joke book. I had no sense which of these jokes were funny, which wasn’t helped by most of the book being about taxes, bad marriages, and other stuff aimed at adults.

It wasn’t until a routine walk to the convenient store that my comedy dreams were fulfilled. My dad, little sister, and I used to walk to the “snack store” to buy a drink each and share a candy bar. While we had some routine favorites, we also tried out new candies together. However, there were a few bars my dad refused to buy because he’d disliked them prior to our snack store outings. Most infamous of these forbidden fruits was the Zero Bar. We tended to reference the Zero Bar when picking our next treat, and on this fateful day I said, “It’s called the Zero Bar because zero people like it.”

And my dad laughed. He laughed because of something I’d said. I was elated!

The only catch up was I hadn’t actually intended it as a joke. After all my attempts to be funny, the only thing that apparently worked was speaking my mind. This singular incident didn’t rewire my understanding of humor - I attempted the parroting tactic with the Zero Bar joke after all - but it’s the most pivotal moment in my mind. To this day, I play up my neurodivergent thought process to make others laugh. I reference Glee at seemly unrelated times with mock enthusiasm to callback times I’ve mentioned Glee with real enthusiasm or talk about my other interests in forced monotones.

There isn’t any actual evidence that Brittany has the same weird complex about humor, but some of their interactions regarding stupidity parallel it. In general, when they’re away from Santana, Brittany appears fairly insecure about her neurodivergence. I might even go as far as to say that she doesn’t joke without Santana around. Now, I don’t think Britt knows what her atypicalities are until they’re presumably diagnosed at M.I.T., but every neurodivergent person I know knew something was wrong before being diagnosed. (I want to talk about how Blaine’s diagnosed autism is a foil for Brittany’s undiagnosed autism at some point, but you didn’t sign up for autistic!Blaine, so now isn’t the time.)

Anddd, that’d pretty much it for now :) I intend to write more in depth Brittany meta in the future, but this is a decent overview for the time being. I hope this made you think, and I’d love to hear your thoughts if it did!

Taemin - Guilty

Gosh, have you guys watched the mv? the song?? taemin proves himself once again that he is on his own level.

Bear with me as im trying hard to understand and explained the storyline of the mv in the best of my abilities. Here is my take on it. Please note that English is not my everyday communication so i apologize for any mistakes in grammar etc.

This analysis will include the mv and also the mv teasers. It will be great if we could get the director cut version for this.

The mv took place in a facility that conducted some kind of medical experiment/human trials to the kids/younger teens. Why i said that is because in the Countdown live the set is decorated with medical/lab tools.

Ok now let's start.

First scribbles - the stick mans, house, tree. This usually done by kids. Second scribbles on the wall shows what people usually mark to count the days. This explained that Taemin has been there for quite some times.

My theory is that this younger person is Taemin himself. In the MV (time stamp : 0:34) Taemin vividly remembered/seeing himself when he was younger, naively dancing happily around with his 'friends' although they are 'trapped' in this facility. We can see the same scene but longer in MV Teaser 1 where younger Taemin collapsed, which later we know that he has an asthma/difficulty in breathing as he keeps using an inhaler.

We see that younger Taemin is with other person in a room alone (MV timestamp : 0:20) This might be his 'lover'. But the lover however able to get out from the facilities due what so ever reason (MV trailer timestamp 1:00). Taemin was then can be seen to keep staring at the hole longing to get out too.

We then come to the 'now' Taemin (in white singlet from MV trailer) playing around with his friends in the water streams but he keeps need to use the inhaler when he got excited or anxious. All of them were then locked in a room and get examined by the authorities there. They were brought to a small field where Taemin was handed a gun and he started pointed to someone/something. He was then was seen bleeding in the MV which i think triggered the 'zombie virus'.

The chaotic situation started when they were all back to their rooms, they were killing the authorities and behaving/moving like a zombie but Taemin however was not affected by it. It might be because he was asthmatic thus preventing him from getting contracted?

As the only one who not affected by the virus he was worshipped by the other like a god or 'Abraxas' as what the MV director updated in his IG. But later on although he is treated as a god we can see that he was alone, lonely, angry and sad? He was the only one who survived the outbreak.

He went back to the abandoned and torn down facility, reminiscing his old room with the scattered shirts, he walked along the hallway and opened an empty room. The room where he was once with his 'lover'. He ran towards the front gate only to be stopped by the haunted hands but he was actually alone there fighting his own self.

He managed to finally run away from that place the zombie outbreak happened to the outside world too. He was getting up from a car hood that has a 'sunflower' drawing on it. Sunflower symbolism here can be interpreted as loyalty and devotion. It can also represent a steadfast commitment and promise to always be there for the person we care about. In the MV trailer as Taemin walked in the empty street someone suddenly grabbed him which probably his 'lover' that has been waiting for him. It also has been an eye lurking to the keyhole that i think was his lover that has been looking out for him all these while.

Also the main picture used on all the music platforms for this song is the one Taemin was biting a 'pear'. Pear can signify a time loss, difficulty or separation which all of that shows in the mv.

For the lyric of the song it was pretty straight forward. Taemin in Lee Mujin show said that the song is about bad love. He quoted

"With the wrong love the bad person saying this to his partner, "This is love"."

4. What detail in [insert fic] are you really proud of?

hmmm, that's kinda hard. honestly there's a few things, but if i had to pick one, it might be the theming of lake verity being connected to emotional scenes every time i write it in SBS. it makes sense, given mesprit - my intent wasn't to have that be the case, i was just thinking "a lakeside is generally a good spot for emotional scenes given the atmosphere", but as it's gone on, i've really enjoyed that detail. mesprit gets to experience so much emotion from the people she gave it to, so many people over the years. and dawn is perhaps her most frequent visitor, so it makes sense mesprit is friendly with her, especially after PLA

5. What do you wish someone would ask you about [insert fic]? Answer it now!

oh fuck, that's hard... i honestly never know haha. i usually just end up talking about it anyway...

i guess maybe one i can think of is why does candice go to the battle frontier and give up her gym job, since in SBS, irida takes on her role. i think for candice, it was a matter of the battle frontier option being more interesting with an open position to her, being able to battle with so many interesting types and options (she still LOVES ice types though), and irida's fire for the role really wanting to help push her into it, especially given her own affinity to ice types. just kinda ended up working out on all bases

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

looks at build fighters shining. I Mean. I May Already Be Writing It.

honestly though, if i DID have to think of one, it might be the vampire/vampire hunter idea(s) ive been rolling about in my head. i genuinely think its the breaking point for my brainrot. but i will do it one day and have fun with it

25. What other websites or resources do you use most often when you write?

bulbapedia for character quotes/pokemon stats and movesets/maps and details that i can include in my writing, a youtube video of cutscenes for whatever thing i'm writing/referencing, and sometimes song lyric sites so i can have a translation/accurate line for the thing i want to use as a chapter title

45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?

atmospheres and really setting up a scene, i think. ive had a lot of help thanks to my editor/beta reader @rhapsodicsongbird, and i feel i've really been able to improve on that as well as just generally getting more emotion out of scenes, which is always something i strive to do. but i really think my description of an atmosphere has improved, in the sounds, visuals, and the ongoings in the background

15. how do you come up with titles for your fics?

i usually use song titles or song lyrics and sometimes the title takes me 2 seconds to come up with while other times it takes forever to find something that feels fitting. i also use quotes or concepts from the source material for some of them.

17. what's something you've learned a lot about while researching for a fic?

the local flowers and birds from pennsylvania come up in almost every deer hunter fic i've written and as i do not live there i've tried to make sure they're accurate species or varieties to feature. i know a lot about flower language already so i try to incorporate my knowledge of flower language with the things i've learned while looking into this. that way, i can combine new knowledge with stuff i already know the find what i think are the perfect details to use in a scene.

29. share a bit from a fic you'll never post or a scene that got cut from an already posted fic

so like i wrote parts of a deer hunter western au awhile ago and i don't think it'll ever get posted bc i'm really not that knowledgeable about westerns and i probably got a ton of things wrong / there are people other than me who would do this better. but i will share a little here now:

Nick wracks his brain for any scraps from the past several days, coming up with almost nothing. He knew the whole time, and this is the one thing he is certain of, that Mike had always remained beside him. He had never forgotten that.

It’s after midnight when Nick turns to Mike, who is drifting off. He doesn't want to startle Mike from what must be one of the first times he’s really let himself rest in a while, but he has to say what's on his mind. “Hey,” he whispers. “I just wanna say. I do want to go home. I always did. I just didn't think I was good enough anymore.” Nick snuggles closer to him. “Like, like I was bad forever. Corrupted. Ruined.”

“I don't care if you are ruined. You're not, but I don't care if you are. I love you ruined. I love you every way.” Mike kisses him right on the lips, holding the back of his head. Nick eagerly responds and sinks into the soft touch.

“I promise I’ll tell you everything,” Nick says between kisses. “I promise when I can I will.” He lets Mike hold onto him fiercely and they kiss for a while longer until they're both too tired to do anything but lay in one another’s arms.

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

This is kinda mean for you to ask when you are literally in the process of helping me brainstorm a title for my Big Bang fic 🤭 /j But usually, they just come to me? I'm not big on using quotes or song lyrics, personally. I mostly just find something that vibes with what I have written, though for some reason that is getting harder for me recently 🤔

Uff, okay, there was one fanfic I was writing when I was still in the Undertale fandom. It was called Floodtale and used a lot of different Sanses and multiverse shenanigans as well as some own characters. I scrapped it because 1. I fell out of the fandom and 2. I just didn't feel comfortable using those fan characters anymore at some point? I just felt like I didn't know them well enough to do them justice. That was also when I started being very strict with myself about not posting stories that weren't finished or I was positive I would finish.

I stopped in the middle of Chapter 6, here's the beginning of Chapter 3, the introduction of the Sans I created:

They stared at the stranger in silence. Well, stranger might be the wrong word, since the skeleton in front of them was definitely a Sans, but none of them had met this particular version before. The bones of the newcomer were grey; his eye sockets empty and black water was flowing out of them. It was running down his face and then disappeared from view under the collar of his black raincoat, which covered half of his face, while the hood covered the back of his head, so his eye sockets and (non-existent) nose were the only visible parts of his skull. One of his hands was buried in the coats’ pockets, the other hanging at his side, the same black water dripping from his fingertips down to the ground. His dark shorts stopped shortly before the rubber boots he was wearing. All in all he was a strange sight to behold, but not the weirdest the four had encountered.

There aren't any Sanders Sides stories I have completely given up on, so this is what you get ^^ Thanks again!

17. What do you do when writing becomes difficult? (maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block)

i have playlists for most of my longer projects, and if i'm feeling stuck or uninspired a lot of the time i just turn on the music to get my brain in the correct zone. and sometimes it also just helps me to physically move and sit down somewhere with the intention of writing! like a coffee shop or the library. and i tell myself im going to [write x number of words] [finish this chapter] [finish this scene] [etc] before i leave. i do that almost every weekend.

18. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?

it depends! usually after- a lot of the time i finish the fic and then pick a fitting quote or song lyric, but other times i just end up using whatever ive been using as the working title if i get attached to it, especially if its funny. for from the archives, i was picking them pretty arbitrarily for a pretty long time since i was just copying the style of TMA canon but now i actually have the titles planned out through the end of the series.

Dream Trip: Hmmm, idk. I’m not much of an explorer lol. Maybe Japan or New Zealand? Just to say that I’ve been there before. Honestly, as long as I can go either shopping or to an amusement park I’ll be happy as a clam.

Last Thing You Read: It’s rare, but sometimes I want to read a cute high school AU with a love triangle. So the last thing I read was a tyrus fanfic called Of Course by CaithyCat & imnotanauthor. I’ve been rewatching Andi Mack, an old comfort show of mine. I know it’s a disney show “for kids” but sometimes I just feel like watching disney or nickelodeon shows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also this one in particular I started watching when I was bedridden for a month so it’s very dear to me :)

Last Book You Enjoyed Reading: Believe it or not, I actually read a paperback book last week. I was looking for a quote, so I opened my volume 2 of *cough* Scum Villain’s Self Saving System *cough*. And then I found the quote. And then I just kept reading until I was halfway through volume 3 and it was like 3 in the morning. Seriously, that book makes my brain go a little bonkers. The scene where Shen Qingqiu tries to hide Luo Binghe from Zhuzhi Lang nearly made me cry from laughing too hard.

Last Book You Hated Reading: Excluding fanfics, I can’t think of one… Maybe Tokyo Ghoul/:re back in 2017? I remember really hating that manga. Honestly, I’m really picky when choosing something to read so the stories I end up disliking I tend to just drop them and then completely forget they ever existed.

Favorite Thing to Cook/Bake: I’m kind of a terrible chef ngl. But the reviews are in and I make a pretty stellar spaghetti. Whenever my niece visits, she always asks me if I can make her my spaghetti because it’s way better than any she’s ever had. Getting that kid to eat anything is a struggle, so I’m really glad that she not only eats my food, she asks for seconds.

Favorite Craft to Do in Your Free Time: When I think of the word “crafts”, I imagine, like, art projects made by hand, so I’m not sure I can include writing and gif-making on this one. So excluding those, does drawing count? Even before I got a drawing tablet, I used to doodle all the time even on scraps of paper. I’m not really good at it, but it’s always been something I do just to kinda get my brain to chill.

Most Niche Dislike: Hmm. You know, it’s funny that you mentioned nail polish, izzy, because the first thing that popped into my head was long nails. I have tried to be that girl who gets a full set at the nail salon and I never did it again because the sound of my nails clacking against things bugged me. Like, I can’t even stand the feel of my own natural nails when they’re the slightest bit too long lol.

Opinion on Circuses: Never been to one. But, clowns slightly freak me out so I don’t have the best opinion of their home turfs.

Do You Have Any Sense of Direction: I’d say I do. Or maybe I think I do by association? My parents both have a pretty bad sense of direction and I used to help them a lot by printing out maps and searching for streets in relation to where we were. One of my older brothers used to always assign me as designated navigator because I’m good at keeping an eye on where we are and how to get back on track should we get lost

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

for titles: i am a sucker for using song lyrics (especially fall out boy ones lol), so a lot of them come from songs that i think fit the fic/vibe well!! and i go to great lengths to find the right lyrics. for example, i knew i wanted my fic what a match: i'm half-doomed and you're semi-sweet to have a fall out boy title because it had such pining loserboy qualities that i thought only a fob lyric would suffice. i literally went through each of their albums and looked through the lyrics of each song until i found that line from the disloyal order of water buffaloes that became the title :D

but sometimes, i try to be original and come up with titles on my own lol. i think my favorites of those have been drowning on rooftops, which i came up with like right before i posted, and beneath these boughs, my devotion blooms, which i don't recall how i came up with title, but i know i really really like it :)

and then there's si vis amari, ama, which is a quote from Seneca in the original Latin 🙃

for chapters: i actually only have six fics with actual chapter titles, so i can just give my reasonings for each one lol

Maybe it's Called Growing Up: all the titles come from TXT song lyrics! each chapter was a byler scene based off of a TXT song :3

To Hell and Back Again: ok the chapter titles for this one are super lame because i just named them after an important symbol/aspect/object in each chapter. like there's literally one chapter that's just called "bike" :)

the truth beneath the rose: i basically am doing what i did in thaba but am making things more descriptive and pretty sounding :D so instead of it just being like "wine" it's "wine in bottles, wine on tongues"

come to me again (in the cold, cold night): all three of the chapter titles are taken from this scene from buffy the vampire slayer, which is one of my all-time favorite Spike scenes. it's when he reveals to Buffy that he's won his soul back, but he speaks in these really broken and poetic lines that i love. AND THEN IT ENDS WITH HIM DRAPING HIMSELF ON A CROSS??? hell yeah 😎

sweetheart, you're so cruel: so the chapters on ao3 don't technically have titles, but each one has a heading designating it as Side A, Side B, etc like records! and then each side is divided into subsections with headings taken from classic rock lyrics :D

si vis amari, ama: each title is a Latin phrase! i tried to make most of them liturgical or related to the church in some way or another, but i don't think all of them are

16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?

usually in the middle/towards the end! i rarely have a title planned out before i start something, and the title usually gets changed multiple times before it gets posted heheh

hi babes ! sorry it took me a bit to get around to answering this ! thank you so much for such a sweet message AHHH ! i actually took creative writing my senior year of college as an elective and it was SO fun so hopefully you have a blast taking it ! also so excited that you're getting into writing your own fics, it can definitely be a gratifying experience. even though i feel like i'm not qualified to give writer advice, some thoughts are under the cut LMAO <3

my initial thought is gonna sound so unhelpful, but i read this quote / saying somewhere and it's stuck with me since: just write and keep writing after, even if you hate what you write. and the reasoning that came with the quote is that you already have 100 percent more to work with than if you were to write, hate what you produce, and then stop until you feel 'good enough' to go again. you can always revise, you can always edit, you can always delete and rewrite, but you'll have something to work with. this is something i really struggled with in high school when i was really getting into writing.

obviously you don't want to push yourself into a state where you develop an unhealthy relationship with it, but it's just a little encouragement or motivation that i used to remind myself of when i would get in a funk.

some random technical (?) advice in no particular order:

use pinterest for writing prompts, templates (for world building, character building, plot structuring), creating moodboards for your projects, etc. pinterest is my holy grail for writing both fanfiction and regular fiction / personal projects. possibilities are endless with miss pinterest.

said and says can get repetitive, yes, but they are still very useful. if you try to swap out said and says with too many alternatives, you run the risk of compromising reading flow and sounding a little too wordy.

in that same vein, try out different word choices, but be careful with which ones you choose! sometimes (like with said and says), writers will use a thesaurus and pick the 'smartest' sounding word and then it ends up throwing off the way the sentence reads...if that makes sense...i'm rambling now lmaooo

in regards to your specific question about my process:

i'm literally so all over the place. sometimes i'll think of a really cool title and then just run with that.

other times, i'll think of a conflict and craft a plot around the conflict and build outwards.

sometimes i'll already have my ending in mind and backtrack all the way to the beginning. then i'll the time to flesh out the foundation.

i also listen to a lot of music. if you go through my masterlist, you'll probably peep a lot of song titles hahaha. i usually use music as a way to feel out a vibe or write using inspiration from the lyrics.

as mentioned above, i love making moodboards and perusing pinterest !

also, this may sound lowkey crazy, but i love writing as if i'm describing scenes in a movie. or maybe directing a movie? i'm a very sensory person, so i try to make sure i include most, if not all, of the senses when constructing these 'scenes'.

and finally!

just have fun! in both the creative writing class and online, don't let outside pressures like your peers, numbers, or other things get in the way of you creating what you love and being apart of a community. it can be difficult and a little isolating at times, but no matter what, just remember what you went into your endeavors looking for!

8. Post an out of context spoiler from a WIP. So this is from my Modern College AU fic that was kind of inspired by another fic (FOG), my most recent Gilmore Girls re-watch, and Taylor Swift’s Midnights album.

12. Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are the outlines? How far do you stray from them?

So, it depends on the fic. Usually I’ll have an idea that I want to write about, sometimes song lyrics help me out, other times, it’s more so history inspired, and even then I might end up with some works that are mildly canon divergent depending on what I want to write about. Then, I end up outlining. So far, two of my longer chaptered fics have outlines of where I want them to go, one is canon compliant, the other is the college fic I mentioned. They’re pretty detailed in terms of how I want some scenes to play out, but if I have to change it and kind of Frankenstein the outline to get to a reading flow that makes more sense, I’m not afraid to do that. The scenes I tend to have in depth in the outline are the angst scenes, where there’s arguing, fighting, injuries, sad experiences (like crying scenes), and near death experiences. I tend to keep in line with the outlines, unless I think of something that I like for the plot better. One of my fanfics that I wrote in 2016 had a major character death, and I’ve decided that I don’t always enjoy writing those. I have a few newer ones with character death, but as of right now, they’re only the historical based fics.

27. What area of writing do you feel strongest in?

Description of a background setting for sure, but I feel pretty confident with dialogue and internal struggles that the characters are having, too. Sometimes I feel like my writing isn’t great, and that occasionally stops me from publishing fics, but I might start having beta readers for a few fics that I’m working on.

48. Who is your favorite character to write for? How has this changed since you’ve started writing for that fandom?

Will Byers hands down. I love writing from Will’s perspective, because there’s such a range to his character that we see on screen, but I want someone to allow him to actually get angry for once. He’s good at hiding his true emotions at times, and it’s fun for me to try and work different angles from his perspective. He doesn’t think he’s the heart of the party, but Will is the person that keeps the Party together and united. Mike is also the hearts, but in the sense that he’s able to inspire others (when he’s not plagiarizing others speeches.) I think I enjoy writing from Will’s perspective so much, because I feel like my personality is similar to his character in a lot of ways. Will is always going to do the selfless thing even when he wants to be selfish. I’m also similar to Mike and Nancy, and I think, being able to see why they might react the way that they are throughout the seasons, and trying to better understand them as characters, has definitely helped me in my writing.

50. How would you describe your writing style?

Aside from very ADHD —> if I don’t set deadlines I don’t get it done…? Umm…

I tend to write fics in a more informal manner, but if its one of my original books, there’s more of a formal tone about it. I’m just glad I don’t have to write fanfics in Chicago style or the way we write (and cite) biology papers.

76. How do you deal with writing pressure, whether internal or external?

When I’m told to write for an assignment or a project, I will 100% procrastinate almost up until the last minute. It’s bad. Sometimes, I’ll make an outline, and gather quotes that I want to use, so I’m a little more prepared. But if there is external pressure or deadlines for me to submit something, it sometimes kicks in 2 days before the assignment or draft is due, and then I write the best paper I’ve ever written. I wrote a solid 10 pages of a History term paper off of a rough outline and a compilation of quotes that backed my argument. 4 hours later, I had 10 pages on Medieval Queens and how they contributed to warfare during the Crusader era. Basically if I’m asked to write, I’ll do it, but it can be a bit tricky to get commit to getting it done.

As for internal pressure, if I’m feeling upset or there’s something I need to get off of my chest, it usually comes up in a vent fic. I kind of write when I want to between school and work.

I know that you've been receiving a ton of writing questions as of late, but as I have found out that our process is quite similar and we come from a very similar technical background I wanted to ask about something I usually struggle with. Titles.

Do you have any tips on titling pieces? Because I tend to follow ye olde school of fishing around for lyrics of a song in the piece's playlist or poem that inspired it, but maybe you could offer some more insight in how you go about it.

OH man thank you so much!!! I am 100% a quote title enthusiast. Cannot hide it whatsoever. Titles exist in a sort of weird space for me, because I'll either instinctively Know what I want the pitch to be called as soon as I have drafted the initial idea (most of my one-word titles and some of the weirder ones come about this way) or I'll be a few paragraphs in and scratching my head while trying to figure out what nice little quote can wrap up whatever I'm writing with a bow.

The main purpose has to be that for a title to stick with me. Early on development, finding a Key Word or a Key Quote(s) can be super helpful in developing the feeling and atmosphere of a story; and it's something i'm always looking for. I have an ideas-graveyard doc where I paste a lot of scene snippets or setups or words / themes / quotes that call to my attention while i'm browsing the net, and it's really useful as an habit bc sometimes these turn out to be great titles, and other times The Feeling(tm) they are expressing leads me into writing something interesting. Think of it as like....... digital journaling......? I have multiple of those docs depending on character pairing.

7: Where did the title come from?

I usually come up with a title off the top of my head from a quote or snatchy symposis about the fic's theme, but this one totally stumped me bc I didn't have much of an idea beside fluffy sexy summer in Italy wolfstar. so I went to my default source for titles - swiftie - and obvs wildest dreams was perfect

13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

wildest dreams for the general vibe see above. BUT there is so much mizrahi music that gave me the inspiration for sirius's character i could for real make a whole playlist for him/this story

literally anything by nasrin kadri but especially albi ma'ak (lyric translation here but obvs the beauty of it is in the original language)

shni meshuga'im by omer adam PLS GO READ THESE LYRICS it literally means "two crazy people" and i stg some of the lyrics are actual scenes from this story (accidental and something i realised just now but that's how well the vibe fits)

la galana i la ma which is a ladino song by mor kabarsi which i ADORE. mor karbasi is persian-moroccan but she works on reclaiming ladino (traditionally sephardic) music because, as she says, 'the blood remembers' (aka her long ago ancestors were from spain) which CRY i could not relate to more

habib galbi by A-WA are an israeli yemeni sister trio. I reference them in chapter 4, and this is my fave song of theirs

chaim sheli by eden ben zaken this song is SO MUCH (lyrics here) it's definitely sirius in all his yearning for moony

i was honestly driving around listening to my mizrahi faves and was like... omg... this would make so much sense for sirius... and so that interpretation was born

15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

this fic started as a silly romcom to have fun with that i brought in a bunch of cultural/historical/linguistic things i know for more realism and its become a full self-recognition through the blorbo moment

like my version of sirius in this story i have a v mixed identity between england/europe/the mid east, switching languages depending on which of my loved ones i'm talking to, mixing and matching food/music/art etc. there are some v conflicting identities (conservative england vs israeli mizrahi for instance) and i felt for a WHILE that i had to pick one in some way, esp bc like sirius i grew up in a family with a long history and v firm identity which i wasn't supposed to shake (rip) although thankfully my parents are incredibly loving and kind. so yeah trying to be loyal to all of these parts of your history/culture/family whilst also going off and pursuing things you're passionate about, making friends who are different from where you came from, falling in love etc has always been incredibly difficult for me, and writing sirius do this definitely a lot more easily than me has helped me figure a lot of stuff out

i also learnt a bit of italian bc whilst i also speak 1000 dif languages italian tragically is not one of them. but now im doing my little duolingo lessons and reading harry potter e il prigioniero di azkaban lmao
