VeronaHills, Round Seven: Monty (B)
Antonio plunged his hands into clay for the first time since Hero passed. It had been her craft, but now he wanted to try do her justice.
Outdoors, the children were making the most of sunlight mingling with sharp autumn air. Viola had taken up jogging around the village and Sebastian dutifully pruned and preened his plant babies. Spring was on the horizon but it felt like the family had a head start on growth and change; Hero's loss was felt in a new way, where she was with them in their breath and the garden and the clay.
Meeting retired footballer Valentine Hart was a bonus. Antonio had posters of him on his wall that he'd bashfully shown to Hero in their teens. It seemed like a gift from her when he passed by and waved from the other side of the white picket fence one morning.
"Always happy to meet a fan! Listen, Antonio, how about this - I've got a spare ball at home - I'll sign it for you."
Thank you, Hero.

"DR. NO" (1962) 60th Anniversary Review
Tumblr media
Last month, October 2022, marked the 60th anniversary of "DR. NO", the first James Bond movie produced by EON Productions. Here is my review of the movie:
"DR. NO" (1962) 60th Anniversary Review This 1962 movie marked the cinematic debut of EON Production's James Bond franchise, created by Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. Sean Connery also made his debut in this film as the MI-6 agent, James Bond. Although many critics and fans consider film as one of the more impressive in the franchise, I honestly cannot say that I share their opinion. Based on Ian Fleming's 1958 novel, "DR. NO" begins with the murder of MI-6 agent Strangeways and his secretary by a trio of assassins in Jamaica. Fellow MI-6 agent James Bond is ordered by his superior, "M", to investigate the agent’s death and eventually stumbles upon a plot by Dr. Julius No, an agent of the criminal organization SPECTRE, to disrupt the U.S. space program for the Chinese Republic. As I had stated earlier, I have never considered "DR. NO" as one of the more impressive entries of the Bond franchise. In fact, it is one of my least favorite Bond movies of all time. The main problem I had with "DR. NO" was the schizophrenic script written by Richard Maibaum, Johanna Harwood, and Berkely Mather that featured an unbalanced mixture of genres. I suppose they had no choice. After all, they simply wrote a close adaptation of Fleming's novel. And Fleming never struck me as the world's greatest novelist. The story began as a mystery thriller, as Bond tried to figure out who was behind Strangeways' death. Unfortunately, the movie transformed into a fantasy-style adventure when Bond and one of his CIA contacts, Quarrel made their way to Dr. No's Crab Key Island in order to disrupt the villain's plot. A part of me wishes that Young and the screenwriters had made changes in Fleming's story. The stilted dialogue peppered throughout the movie only made matters even worse for me. The worst line came out of the mouth of former beauty pageant winner, Marguerite LeWars, who portrayed a photographer working for SPECTRE.  I take that back.  Miss LeWars never spoke that line.  It came from the mouth of the actress hired to dub her voice.  Although Miss LeWars never spoke the line, it struck me as so bad that I will not even repeat it. Even Connery was guilty of spewing some wooden dialogue. In fact, his performance seemed as uneven as the movie’s story and production style. In many scenes, he seemed to be the epitome of the smooth British agent. And in other scenes – especially with Jack Lord, who was the first actor to portray CIA agent Felix Leiter – he came off as gauche and wooden. Mr. Lord, on the other hand, gave a consistently polished and performance as the sardonic Agent Leiter. Much has been made of Ursula Andress’ performance as "Bond Girl No.1" Honey Ryder – especially her famous first appearance when her character emerges upon a beach. Frankly, I have never been able to sense the magic of that moment. Nor did I find Andress' presence in the movie particularly impressive. Not only was her character irrelevant to the story, but she failed to aid Bond’s attempts to defeat Dr. No. I first became a fan of Joseph Wiseman ever since I noticed his sly and subtle performance as a 1960s gangster in the Michael Mann TV series, "CRIME STORY". But I was not that impressed by his Dr. Julius No, a character that simply bored me to tears. I might as well say the same about Anthony Dawson’s performance as SPECTRE agent, Professor Dent. Many fans have been waxing lyrical over a scene featuring his death at Bond's hand. Personally, I found Bond's actions unprofessional. The MI-6 agent could have easily drugged the SPECTRE operative, removed any inconvenient cyanide pills and had MI-6 "question" him.  Instead, Bond killed him in cold blood . . . and lost any chance to get more information from Dent.  Moron.  "DR. NO" can boast first-class performances by American-born John Kitzmiller as the exuberant Jamaican CIA contact, Quarrel. And Zena Marshall gave a solid, yet subtle performance as Professor Dent’s Eurasian secretary and SPECTRE agent, Miss Taro. It is only too bad that the producers and Terence Young could not find genuine Eurasians for both the Dr. No and Miss Taro roles. But I guess that would not have been possible in 1962. "DR. NO" featured some beautiful photography of Jamaica from cinematographer Ted Moore. Monty Norman not only provided a first-rate musical score, but he also delivered the original "James Bond" theme. However, some of the movie's flaws – namely the uneven script and direction by Terence Young, along with the wooden dialogue, makes "DR. NO" vastly overrated in my eyes. But what can I expect from a movie that consistently threatens to put me to sleep two-thirds into the story?

RIP PAT CARROLL
1927-2022
Tumblr media
Patricia Ann Carroll was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was an actress and comedian best known for voicing Ursula in The Little Mermaid as well as having a long acting career on stage and screen.
Tumblr media
Her first brush with Lucille Ball was through appearing in an episode of the Desilu sitcom “The Ann Sothern Show” titled “Pandora”.  Lucille Ball had made a guest appearance on the series to kick off its transition from Sothern’s “Private Secretary.”
Tumblr media
From 1961 to 1964 she played Bunny Halper on “The Danny Thomas Show” (originally titled “Make Room for Daddy”).  Her husband Charley was played by frequent Lucy featured actor Sid Melton.  While Carroll and Lucille Ball never acted together on screen, they did know each other.  In an interview, Carroll remembered Lucy:
Tumblr media
I don't think we had many [female comedians] in the professional field until Lucy came along and made the whole career of ‘comedienne' okay. You no longer had to be an ugly girl to be a comic. She made it possible for any young woman to do comedy anywhere. You know, when I was doing “The Danny Thomas Show” we were on the same lot where she and Desi did the Lucy show.
Lucille Ball used to come to my dressing room out of sentiment and I got to talk to her. We talked about her early days at MGM. She said, "I am doing work today that I was taught to do by Rags Ragland and Buster Keaton." MGM kept them under contract and they taught comedy classes to the young contract players, Lucy being one.
She said, "They used to give us a prop to take home with us and study every part of it, get so familiar with it, we could throw it in the air, catch it and do anything we want. That has helped me so much." I keep thinking of her using stilts in her show and how adept she was with any kind of prop. How wonderful of her to give the credit was due. She was a very generous woman that way.
Tumblr media
In addition to “The Danny Thomas Show,” Carroll also made a few appearances on Desilu’s game show “You Don’t Say”. From 1963 to 1969 she was a regular panelist on the show, playing doing more episodes than anyone except host Tom Kennedy. She played the game with Marty Allen, Richard Deacon, Sebastian Cabot, Marty Ingels, Bill Cullen, Brian Keith, Ken Berry, Mel Torme, Leonard Nimoy, Monty Hall, Rod Serling, and her TV husband Sid Melton, among others.
Carroll was an Emmy, Drama Desk and Grammy Award winner and a Tony Award nominee. She died at her home in Cape Cod at the age of 95. She is survived by her three children.

Hi! Could u post all of ur rosestarkillerchaser fics (preferably the one with the dark!james au) :D tyyyy <3
there is currently only one line of the dark!james au, literally just reminding me of what i want to happen lmao
and none of the others are ready to post (i’ve accidentally taken a bit of a hiatus from writing, i’ve been super busy), but i could give you some info about one of them!
this isn’t what you asked for, but i can tell you about the rskc mermaid au!
for starters, it’s a soulmate au, and everybody has one on their wrist. generally, making contact with the mark causes a soothing feeling to the owner of the mark, and the person on the other end physically reacts, usually by flinching.
this isn’t in the story yet, but i think it’s gonna be the more intricate your mark, the more partners you have.
i think james is a prince? it’s not specifically mentioned but he’s basically prince eric from the little mermaid. barty, evan, and regulus are merpeople.
james saves them from an aquarium and plans on keeping them safe uNeil the fishing competition ends (bc it can get intense and he doesn’t want them to get hurt) and then releasing them
background wolfstar, remus lives with james, sirius is a merperson. lily gave them something allowing them to communicate without having met.
lily is a witch, pandora is a cook, and mary is a palace guard. they are all three dating.
also, background walphemia, but james is not blood related to walburga, his parents by blood are still effie and monty.
barty, evan, and regulus are already dating, and have been doing so for an undetermined about of time.
pandora and evan are twins.
bellatrix is ursula.
rsk tried finding their fourth and the result was evan be and mute (it won’t last forever)
and james is asthmatic!!
sorry it’s not an actual fic, but i hope this is enough info to hold you over!
i might end up writing for stranger things before i write again for hp (like something i could actually post), but I’ll try to get something out sometime soon!!

The Quick and Pithy of MY READING MIND...
Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson It's odd how nearly every character in this novel has the ability to quote literature -- especially Shakespeare. Of my various Brit friends I don't know any who could quote poetry, drama, or tid-bits of novels; no, not a single one, although they do know lines of dialogue from East Enders and Monty Python.
Nevertheless, these novel characters, particularly Ursula, live lives of luxury. No sign of Dickens here! Well, without such "trappings" -- is money really a trap? -- she could not have used her reincarnation to get close to Hitler.
I'm not giving anything away: the first two pages tell you about all anyone needs to know, as foreshadowing, to keep the reader-pump primed for all the events as re-combinate, hashed, diverted, inverted, and etcetera.
A fun book.

12 and 17 for the book asks ✨
12. What was the most unexpected book you read this year?
Probably Rebecca. I didn't know anything about it really going in (obviously I'd heard of it but only vaguely, I bought a copy in the bookshop in Whitby because the blurb intrigued me) and it *really* hooked me with its twists and turns. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it nearly as much as I did, it's a definite reread for me next year.
17. Top five books of the year (in no particular order)
- Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier (obviously)
- Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand (Another gothic story, this one was based around a series of retrospective interviews of a band who recorded at Wylding Hall in the 70s(?), and their lead singer/front man disappears. Very creepy, very fun, and very short - less than 200 pages, I read it in a day - and another definite reread)
- World War Z by Max Brooks (wow, the horror and horror-adjacent stuff is really taking over my list this year, huh? I'm not mad about it. Another retrospective, this time based around the narrator interviewing and documenting people's experiences during the zombie apocalypse, which happened - and was brought more or less under control, albeit with incredible loss of life - a decade previous. Despite this, and despite the fact that we know that the people interviewed survived, at least long enough to be interviewed - the tension and terror they describe feels all too real.)
- The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee (I know I'm late to the party with this one, but I enjoyed it a lot. I was really moved by the characters' emotions and problems, I loved Monty, the main character, despite - or more accurately because of - the fact that he's a twat, it was a very fun romp that dealt with issues of queerness, ableism and race in a fairly realistic way that was sensitive about these issues without being condescending or soapboxy. I enjoyed the sequels too but this is by far my favourite - Monty and Percy have my heart. Kind of YA Black Sails, and I mean that as a compliment)
- Piranesi by Susanna Clarke (I'll be honest I was torn between about three different books for this spot, but I think this one captured my imagination most. Another one I read in a day, then kind of wished I hadn't so I could savour it for longer. Intriguing, confusing, horrifying and full of joy at the same time)
Special shout outs to House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski and The Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin

VeronaHills, Round Seven: O'Mackey
As Gabe pondered the crossword clues each morning, he also pondered who he was without Jules in the house.
The pondering continued at the pond, where Gabe kept a small school of koi fish. He'd heard the professors at Mission University were firm but fair. It was probably - no, definitely a good thing that Jules was going to learn from teachers other than her dad. Selfishly, though, he wished he could be there to support her tertiary experience.
The koi, silver with splashes of ginger, shimmied through the water to collect their morning tea. It was a miracle Petruchio hadn't shown any interest in them, Gabe realised. Jules had been woe to part with him but the campus had a blanket no pets policy - so really, Gabe wasn't all alone. Petruchio opined aplenty regarding his food bowl situation!
Human interaction did come in the form of Antonio and his son Sebastian taking their dog for a walk. Gabe was glad he had checked the mail at that moment. Antonio's twins were not long for university, so the two dads had that in common, as well as being single parents. The single part hung on Gabe's mind... lately, men in general seemed to strut rent-free in his head. He quietly observed them, not sure where the strutting would lead, but remaining curious nonetheless.
