it's officially the start of spooky season (TO ME) and i was struck by the urge to craft an actual cover for my beloved ghosthunters steddie fic. they are dork ass losers, the pining is mutual, and steve wears glasses in this one.

They stand at the base of a short flight of stairs leading up to the old university library. From everything Steve’s read, it’s one of the most haunted places in Indiana… within a tank of gas’ drive… that would let them in after hours.

“It’s the witching hour,” Eddie says spookily. He’s come up behind Steve, pressing close and wiggling his fingers on Steve’s shoulders.

Steve huffs a laugh and starts double checking his pockets for his share of the gear. Something to focus on that’s not the way Eddie’s breath ruffles his hair and skims over his cheek, raising goosebumps in its wake.

It’s not like he doesn’t like the attention, the closeness, the physicality of Eddie. He does. Probably too much. Especially since they’re just friends. Steve knows he’s not special to be on the receiving end, it’s how Eddie is with everyone.

coffee/tea/cocoa: i'm about to go to the coffee shop and get the biggest coffee money can buy, but i love making a mid-afternoon cup of tea, and my partner makes special fancy hot cocoa that is out of this world

Referring to the empathy S2 Steve post:

No, but keep going in the tags!! Like, I feel like this is the moment where Nancy's bullshit speech might have sunk in a bit more, showing it outside of himself? He's had all these social norms ingrained in him for years, what to do, how to do it, etc, and relaying what he's been taught to do to this kid. Seeing Dustin's reaction to it, I feel like he maybe had a bit of an "oh shit" moment. He went to Nancy's house with roses to apologize, not knowing why he had to apologize, but this is the moment I think it sunk in. Ok I'm done 🙃

hey hi, first of all, thank you so so much for sending me this!! second of all, i know we just met so please forgive me for going ham on a biscuit all over this ask. my response is way too long and definitely way more than you asked for...

((i just have a lot of thoughts and feelings about steve and trying, and characters that try over and over and over again but it’s not good enough, it’s never good enough, they’re never good enough))

you're so right that this scene in s2 is definitely one of those “oh shit” moments where nancy's bullshit speech comes up and slaps him in the face again. "oh shit, this is exactly what she meant, isn't it? this is the bullshit." it's a lesson he's forced to keep learning over and over, and one he feels like he has to keep learning over and over again, that it's what he deserves.

i think his first "oh shit" moment starts sooner than that though, even before nancy called him bullshit. after the fight with jonathan when steve's nursing his busted face with a can of coke, he tells tommy and carol that they're both assholes, and they just don't like nancy because she's not miserable like they both are. like he's realizing he is too. that he doesn’t like being the mean asshole jock everyone expects him to be, that it doesn't make him feel good, that taking out his feelings on other people just makes those people feel like crap, and he doesn't like hurting people.

i think it takes him a lot longer to realize exactly why he's miserable though, but he starts trying to make amends. he starts trying to be a better person. maybe if he tries to fix things, he'll feel a little less miserable. he helps clean off the marquee, he goes to apologize to jonathan, he buys him a new camera, and he and nancy get back together (presumably after he apologized to her too). everything's fine, right?

nancy’s bullshit speech has knock-on effects in steve’s life for years to come and i think that’s the point he really starts questioning why he’s been trying to fit himself in the box of societal norms and who benefits from him doing that, because it’s certainly not him. in the scene where he goes to the wheeler’s with the roses, steve's hyping himself up, “i love you, i’m sorry,” literally rehearsing the script he’s been told he needs to say to fix this and get her back. this is how you apologize, with a dozen roses (probably not even nancy's favorite flower, just what the societal script calls for (but he's not ready to question that part yet)). it also makes me wonder just how many times he's done this exact same apology for her over the course of their relationship...

anyway when he says “what the hell am i sorry for?” it’s not because he doesn’t know what to apologize for. he's frustrated because he thought everything was fine when it clearly wasn't, that the way he's been trying to be a good boyfriend isn't working, but he wants to keep trying, he wants to fix it. he's clearly at the end of his rope and he’s convinced he has to apologize, but i think he’s really questioning why nancy doesn’t have to apologize. why she hasn’t been putting any effort into their relationship (that, with hindsight, is pretty obvious has been in a bad way for a long time), why she hasn't been trying too.

she broke his heart with that speech, cracked it wide open and shattered the pieces, and it seems like it truly came out of nowhere to him. so he’s recognizing what a one-way street their relationship has become, that he’s been asking her to show up for him how he wants but he hasn’t been doing the same for her. and he probably feels really guilty that the ways he was trying weren't working and he didn't know until it was too late. he knows he needs to apologize if he wants their relationship to continue, but he’s bitter that just because he’s the man, he has to apologize first. that he has to be the one fighting for their relationship. and if nancy was invested in them, shouldn’t she be doing the same thing? shouldn't she show up at his house with a dozen roses and an apology too? probably he's also questioning if he even wants to keep trying with this relationship, after he had to beg her to say "i love you" and she wouldn't, but that's an essay for another time! (alexa play comfortable by john mayer)

but! this ties back into the dustin of it all. steve shows up at nancy's house with a dozen roses because he's trying to fix their relationship. and i think we see throughout the seasons that it takes him some time between acting like a jerk and apologizing for it, but the time between the two events gets shorter and shorter, like in s4 when dustin calls him on it and he immediately agrees that was uncalled for and apologizes.

in the s2 scene, it takes him a minute, but just like you said, he realizes he's doing the same shit to dustin that society has done to him, saying this is how a man acts in a relationship, this is how you get the girl: just treat 'em like crap, get what you want, and don't fall in love. and like op said "realizing that his 'advice' only upset dustin and probably wasn't that helpful." maybe he's also thinking about just how miserable he's been following that societal norms playbook and that he doesn't want other people to feel that way. dustin has an unconventional approach, but that doesn't mean it's wrong, and steve feels kinda bad that he shut him down so fast. he doesn't apologize, but he does give dustin some actual advice and shares his hair secrets with him to try and make up for it.

throughout the show, steve's still a sarcastic little shit. he's still bitchy and cutting, but it becomes less and less at anyone's expense. core to steve's character is that he's trying, and he keeps trying. he wants to be better. and because his words aren't enough, he makes sure he's the first one in and the last one out when there's even a hint of danger. he stands between all of them and danger because if he can't say it, at least he can show it. he's convinced that he's this asshole bully jock because everyone keeps telling him that he is. and he keeps taking that hit on the chin over and over again, never correcting anyone on it or pushing back against it, because he feels like he has to atone for this sin everyone else has hung around his neck.

steve's internalized it to such an extent that when eddie is the first person to tell him he's "actually a good dude" in probably the past four years, of course he can't help but latch onto that. finally here's validation that someone sees that he's trying. and that maybe all that trying will finally be worth something to his friends too.

11: What work took you the longest to write? love is like ghosts, for sure!! i had that thing as a wip from the start of october, and picked at off and on for the whole month (and moved across the country but we don't need to talk about that), then basically spent a week or 2 before thanksgiving putting every spare minute i had into writing it

Steve turns his head to look at her and gets a mouthful of hair for his trouble. He nudges her head with his shoulder. “Robs? Robin? Did you OD back there?” “Not yet, captain,” she mumbles, building to a shout, “ready to… set sail!”

Eddie, though, can never stay quiet for long. “Hey ghosts! Why don’t you come out and torment my little friend over here?“ “I’m an inch taller than you, asshole,” Steve interrupts. “Keep telling yourself that babe, it’s all hair,” Eddie snarks back [...] “C’mon, who wouldn’t want to wreck these choir boy good looks?” Eddie says, looking Steve up and down. He seems to get lost in his own thoughts for a moment, just staring at Steve. Until Steve clears his throat with a loud cough, and Eddie jerks his head back up, his eyes slightly dazed. “Hmm?”

13. Is there a trope you wouldn’t write if it was the last trope on earth? i don't wanna yuck anybody's yum, but like any sort of non-con, massive age gap, and like y/n or reader inserts are just not for me

18. What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene. it's gotta be the study room scene in love is like ghosts! that scene is the first part of the fic that i wrote, and i feel like the banter is particularly on point. i always knew this scene was going to happen (if not necessarily how far it was going to go 😉), so it was just trying to build the atmosphere and the tension to make it a worthwhile payoff, particularly finding steve's breaking point

biologically, emotionally, or legally? i’m sorry jen, the set up was too perfect!!

umm... tl;dr lots, but in various stages

3 actively writing (soon to be 2 if today goes to plan🤞) - untitled ghost hunter steddie wip (which now has a title but it might be stupid so tbd) - main wip aka diyc. i've written about 3.5 of 5 chapters (it's all plotted out but it keeps growing), but it won't be posted until it's complete because i'm just Like That - 'bonfire' prompt for lex's winter spicy six fic challenge that just exists as some bullet points and bits of dialogue rn

8 on deck / percolating that have enough dialogue / set up / words written to coalesce into a plot that i'm really excited to pick up (might have to roll a d8 to see which i write on next...)

15 that are just vague scenes / dialogue that might some day become something and maybe don't really count as wips but have a title or a premise and are just hanging out in my big big doc of wips
