Hi all,

So in case any of you didn’t know, I’m actually an artist by day and a hobby writer/fanfic writer by night. I don’t know a lot about writing (I barely passed college English tbh) and I don’t think I’ve ever really liked writing (for school—essays etc) until getting into fanfiction.

I bring this up because I have a question. Any answer is appreciated. I’m familiar with different types of fics and one type I’m interested in are Reader fics/Self-Insert fics. I’ve heard online that, depending on your preference, people either really like or really hate Self-Insert/SI fics. I personally like them and wanted to try it.

My question is: Do Reader fics/SI fics replace an established character or is the Reader considered their own/separate character? OR are either options possible and it’s up to the writer??

For example: I’m writing an Arcane fic that is supposed to be a self-insert/Reader fic where Reader is supposed to go through the trauma episode (they all are but ya’ll know which I mean) and halfway through, I realized that the Reader is essentially Powder (with a few differences, but overall really similar to Powder). Instead, is the Reader supposed to be their own character or is it ok to write Reader as Powder (thus ‘replacing’ Powder in the story)?

I hope that makes sense, I’m not too good at explaining. To be clear, Reader isn’t an OC. Self-Insert fics and OC fics are different b/c I’m not writing specific character traits (you insert your own—the point of SI fics).

So yeah, again, ANY ANSWER IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
