Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2023 National Costume: "Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian"
The national costume that I have the honor to present to the universe, pays homage to the architecture of Old San Juan and the exciting atmosphere of the Calle San Sebastian Festivities. The skirt, crafted from velvet and black sequins in an elegant trumpet cut, is adorned with hundreds of handmade pebbles, each painted to replicate the iconic blue pebbles of Old San Juan.
Above the corset, which emulates the architecture of the Fortress, unfolds a shell-like back adorned with more than a dozen iconic sites of Old Saint John, from the fountain of thePaseo de la Princesa to the Chapel of the Holy Christ, all in stunning 3D detail, some illuminated with LED lights.
At the back of the dressing room, a hand painting offers a panoramic view of the San Felipe del Morro Castle, the heads, blisters, planners and folk dancers dancing above the festive crowd, with the Monostrellada flag flying high. A special detail is that the five Miss Universe Puerto Rican queens and other iconic personalities of the country stand out in the painting.
The entire suit is meticulously embroidered in various colored crystals, adding a touch of glitter and charm to this masterpiece.
On the other hand, the accessories that accompany the craft were designed and created by Fabian De la Fuentes. The earrings worn by the piece simulate the lighthouses of the residences and streets of Viejo San Juan, while its bracelets represent the structures of residential balconies. A magical flower adorns the hair.
Las Calle San Sebastian are a tradition that has united Puerto Ricans for generations, and this typical costume, with its attention to detail and passionate tribute to this celebration, will undoubtedly capture the hearts of everyone on the Miss Universe stage.

Merry Christmas!
Or as they say in Spanish, Feliz Navidad! Today we celebrate the Christmas holiday with a festive book, Land of Two Christmases, which was published by Oxford University Press in 1965 with 360 copies held for distribution to the Typophiles. The text was written by Harriett Philmus Pitt and discusses the various Christmas traditions celebrated in Puerto Rico, where the books says it is celebrated in both the American and Spanish styles—though I would argue that Puerto Rico has a style all it's own! You can learn all about Christmas and related celebrations in Puerto Rico on the Discover Puerto Rico website.
The illustrations are by Erwin Schachner and were printed using photo-engravings of original linoleum prints. The text was set in Caledonia and letterpress printed on tan laid paper by Marbridge Printing Company, Inc. The book is printed in black and bright pink, making it quite festive though not what most would normally consider to be Christmas colors.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

so i watched blue beetle yesterday and i wanted to review it with the article about latino representation in media in mind but honestly i just want to talk about the background specifically the reyes family home
jaime reyes is a mexican that lives in el paso, texas. at least according to his source material. in the film however, they invented up an imaginary city for him and his family to live in and it was disappointing to see. im a texas born puerto rican whom has lived in el paso and puerto rico amongst many other places and it was kinda like….. it felt wrong the way this imaginary city was depicted. el paso is a desert and they translated that to literally them just living on a street named el paso. el paso is a beautiful city with gorgeous architecture and we were robbed of seeing that in favor of taking puerto rico and its architecture and being labeled once again a fantasy. like no! we were robbed of two different representations at once!
jaime’s home in the very real city of el paso, texas is completely ignored in favor of a tropical landscape. and while it brought pride to my heart seeing mi isla on the big screen, it made me sad as well that people would see our land (once again) yet not even realize we are not in fact a fantasy but a real actual place where people really actually live.
puerto rico’s architecture is built with very specific things in mind: one, because we live on an island, the materials we use are primarily concretes and metals to ensure longevity of our buildings in extremely moist climates. two, our homes are essentially (but not all) barricaded for extra safety (a sad but real reality) with gorgeously crafted fencing around porches. three, WE LOVE COLORS our homes are painted extremely colorfully! while in contrast, el paso’s color palate revolves favoring the earth tones seen in the city's desert landscape. it just felt like the gorgeous landscape of el paso wasnt good enough to the producers to be depicted on the big screen.
not only that we were robbed of the real issues that puerto rico is facing right now. we see a sign at the beginning of the neighborhood the reyes family lives in with several things graffitid onto it and one of the phrases is “gringos go home” this is a huge movement in puerto rico and has been for many years now as more rich white people have been gentrifying our island and kicking native puerto ricans out of their own homes. homes they have lived in their entire lives. the phrase itself can be seen as funny and im sure some people laughed about it but it felt like a slap in the face to see especially because that specific neighborhood is literally filmed in puerto rico.
the movie presents this issue of rich white people taking over this imaginary city in somewhere california when these issues are actually happening on the island as you read this. and its something they talk about in the movie but not in relation to puerto rico! like its a big issue! the reyes are literally losing their home! and theyve already lost their business because of the rising rent that they simply cannot afford. except the land the gringos are gentrifying isnt real because the city doesnt fucking exist and therefore viewers can choose to look at it as this grand fantasy issue as if the current colonization of puerto rico isnt something to be concerned about. how can yall tell us to go back to our country then take away our homes? where are we supposed to go?

Puerto Rican Rock Art, Part 2
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome to part 2 of my Puerto Rican Rock Art project! I will mostly be talking about Cueva Lucero (pictured above). I may mention other caves as well, just because there aren't many papers written about this specific cave. There are many others since about 81% of rock art found on the island is found in caves (Dubelaar 1994). I imagine it's just easier to talk about all the caves as a whole since they were all used similarly.
Cueva Lucero can be found in Juana Diaz in Puerto Rico. (Not from references).
Tumblr media
However, due to fears of vandalism, the cave's exact location isn't listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In this same form, Cueva Lucero is deemed as important due to all the art found in it, this art shows us a part of the past we could have never seen without it. It is thought to be a place of religion or as a ceremonial site (Rodriguez et al, 2008). This cave was used around 600-1500 C.E., and represents mostly pre-Hispanic times and contains around 100 rock art images. That makes itself one of the best examples of pictographs in Puerto Rico (Rodriguez et al, 2008). While it has plenty of pictographs, it has petroglyphs as well.
Tumblr media
The difference between petroglyphs and pictographs are that one is painted, and one is carved imagery. I included an example above.
There are three different types of landscapes that both these styles show up in:
A. Caves and rock shelters on the coast, created by the waves.
B. Caves and rock shelters found in the mountains.
C. Riverbanks and riverbeds.
As well, Puerto Rico has an extra type:
D. The petroglyphs found in Puerto Nuevo. They are engraved in flat sandstone ledge that run parallel to the coast (Dublelaar 1994). Pictured below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rock paintings found in Puerto Rico can be monochrome, bichrome and polychrome (Dubelaar 1994). They also can be found in a couple colors as well. Red, white, orange and black were most commonly used (Hayward et. al., 2009).
Cueva Lucero falls under type B, has most, if not, only monochrome paintings. Most are painted using the color black.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, you also see a lot of circles being used in their art. Obviously, using circles so much does suggest that the shape has importance for the community (Fewkes 1903). It can be seen as a sign of unity, which, is found in many other indigenous communities. Here are some examples of circle art found in Cueva Lucero.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots of circles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is about it for this cave. Cueva Lucero holds valuable knowledge about the past. Without it, the other caves, we wouldn't have been able to obtain as much knowledge from our Taino ancestors as we do now. This goes to show, these old paintings and carvings, sites we find on the island (sites where people lived, hunting sites), are vital to understanding our history.
Tumblr media
All photos (unless otherwise stated) are pictures from Cueva Lucero. All but the very first photo are from Rodriguez et al. 2008.
