The Montreal Underground - My Mission on the Scene
We are given the gift of a local scene.
We are given the gift of freedom of expression, freedom of will, freedom of creation.
We are gifted with the divine ability to Create.
13 years ago, when I took my first steps in the underground music scene in Montreal, the scene was thriving. I revelled in its diversity, its freedom, and the unity it showed. I started by going out almost every night to every show I could find out about in the Mirror, Voir or through MySpace. During the day I would walk around town, taking note of all the venues that were there, then go back home to check out their websites and see what was on their scheds. Or I'd just grab a bunch of flyers at the venues, check out the bands, and if I'd like them (mostly, I'd like them), I'd go to the show.
I'd hand out copies of my EPs to each and every single band. I'd stay until 2am every night to be able to talk to them, hand out my music, establish a connection and open the door to playing some shows together, eventually.
It was fruitful, to say the least. I played tons of small gigs and open mike nights, at least once a month, sometimes 2 or 3 times, forging a foundation for myself.
2010 rolled in and I went in the studio to produce my first album. Crowder's End was released in November 2012, featuring most of my fave musicians from the scene here as it was then, as well as friends who were also killer musicians from Ottawa and Toronto.
I came back on the scene with my rock and roll tank of a first album and live band. From 2013 to 2015, I witnessed huge changes in the scene, as I played my way through it. People left, venues closed, booking companies crumbled, and the scene became homogenized. It creepingly became harder and harder for musicians who weren't doing folk or synthpop to get ops. I witnessed a lot of giving up. A lot of lack of care. A lot of defeat.
Still, I believed. I believed in what I do and I believed in timing and I believed in the stars are the core of people's hearts that really want to see the fall of the major corporations and the thriving of All that is Alternative. All that is Genuine. All that is True, Authentic Art.
I spent 3 years producing my 2nd album, Original Game, a milestone of my indie career.
Waves and cycles, such is the way life goes. Eventually I was dead set on leaving. A burnout followed the release of Original Game at the end of 2017, and I realized how tired I was of pushing. How tired I was of putting all this energy into this vortex of a scene that was on the verge of extinction.
And then I was offered a ride on a boat, and soon enough I was to be trusted with steering its wheel.
Cabaret Berlin opened, and I'm given this opportunity to keep the fire alive in the Montreal underground scene. All our venues were closing down, and then a new venue opened.
I'm trusted to shape it up, and I'm trusted to keep it up. I'm offered this place to allow for that which was dying out in our city to breathe again -to live, and stay alive and well, as long as it Wills it to.
I'm doing everything I can for the underground, alternative culture to stay alive, and I promise to do this in every single aspect of my life, for as long as I live. My 13 years on the scene here in Montreal have taught me more than anything or anyone else in my life, and the gift I give to my local scene is my experience, my love, and my will to overtake that which poisons and destroys Art and Culture.
It's not too late to stand up, take each other's hand, and fight the ones that are doing everything they can to dumb us down and kill us out.
Turn off those movies and tv shows. Stop staring at the screens. Get out of your apartment. Treat yourself to some fun, comfy, wild, awesome outfits, and head out to the bar to meet people -people like you, people that are genuine and that have fire in their hearts and love in their soul. Dancing is good for you. Meeting people is good for you. Real social interactions in real places are good for you. Use your voice to speak, not your thumbs.
The underground is waiting for you -and it wants you In on its winning game.

“Trying it at Home”
This is still probably the most accurate depiction & overall expression of contemporary “Punk Rock Ethos” that I have seen. The underground scene of music (which doesn’t seem to really exist in the world of Mainstream Music - Thank GOD) is where I belong.
Living in a place like Orlando, Florida has it’s challenges with being SURROUNDED by mainstream followers who have no clue about DIY Punk, or anything that is not empty-messaged, without soul, without meaning (due to their own obsession with the proverbial - glamour & disgustingly lavish “artists” who are reigning over the Top 40 Charts).
There are more artists & musicians (and everything else in-between) that have a fearless independence that the music industry simply cannot replicate or control. Big business (and the people that push for dollar signs as opposed to genuine artistic expressions) ruined punk rock music.
There’s nothing wrong with people enjoying mainstream music, especially those who prefer to treat music and art as a commodity. A lot of people prefer to have music presented to them and that’s all good & well.
..That’s just not me though. I prefer the underground. I prefer real people, with real problems, who probably go through as much shit as I’ve been through in my life (since childhood) and still keep going and keep striving for their own life’s prosperity (without big business exploiting them and trying to USE them for a selfish & money-fixated agenda).
I prefer independence & liberation in opposition to the monstrosity that the music industry has become (particularly in terms of destroying what Punk Rock truly represents: Freedom).
It’s rare to find true inspiration from the music industry these days (at least speaking for myself). All of the most inspiring artists and songs and stories have all come from people who are on the ground level like me and are genuinely working their asses off to have a good life.
Do It Yourself.

Musikalinga Scene (Part: UNO)
This morning, Dey went out to hunt some Psilocybins. A couple of hours went, he came back with that, and the idea to attend Musikalinga. It was gonna take place in Cainta, Rizal. Three hours ride. I thought the idea was great so we went ahead to dress up and eat. We had a couple of Psilocybin, a bottle of gin, which we drank on our way. To our experience, whenever we eat mushrooms, we often would do fasting so we’d get into the trip. Since we just ate for brunch, we brought gin to digest faster and to get drunk. We then arrived at We arrived at 4:20 PM. We were a bit worried that we might be already late. The show was gonna start at 3 PM, they said.
We finally arrived at the Venue, One Arena. It looks like a school Gymnasium by the school just infront of it. We then went to smoke on the side, along with a band that was gonna perform. A bit worried if we were late, asked them if it already started. To our relief, it still hasn’t. We then took the mushrooms then and there. After that, we decided to get in, they were only just setting the stage up. We then proceeded to the bleachers from the side we came in. Settled our things, check out the venue. I went to the bathroom to fix myself up and Dey stayed still on the seat. It was already kicking in, for the both of us after a couple of minutes. I then sat beside Dey, to settle. I was just admiring the surroundings. There were two merchandise vendors, and a tattoo artist on the other side.
People were still busy setting up the stage. The instruments, amplifiers and lights were the first ones to go. Then there it looks liked seven circles hanging, illustrating the phases of the moon. In the middle, forming a yin yang. A few more minutes went and I start to feel light headed. The shrooms were kicking in. Dey was laying down, to him, it hit him hard. I on the other hand could already feel joy. It still wasn’t there quite enough, but it’s there. I went to the bathroom to check my eyes. Diluted pupils. Altered feeling. Glimpses of what’s about to happen start flashing behind my eyes. We might’ve took this a little too early, I thoguht. The show hasn’t even started yet but we’re already tripping. I didn’t mind though because after a while, the stage lights would go on to trip me out while we wait for the event to start.
I could feel my heart palpitating, I went out to smoke. I began to feel weird and started walking slow. My eyes were as diluted as an owl, on a 5 PM evening. Contrast was higher, I could see every detail that usually isn’t noticed on a sober, naked eye. There were mandala patterns all around the surroundings and my mind kept showing me that vivid kaleidoscope/Tesseract visual in my head. Time felt a little slower and more serene. I was staring on the grounds, admiring how my perception had differed. Everytime I sit, the pattern I see changes, as if it’ was three-dimensional. There were a couple of kids behind me, thinking I was stuck up on weed. Couple of ding bags couldn’t tell the difference. My eyes weren’t red, they were dilated. But I couldn’t care less about them. Smirked my way back to the gym as my hands and feet began to oil up.
It wasn’t long until Slowdough came. The first one to see was Josh Flaviano. You could tell the moment he walked in he was in the cosmos like the most of us were. The band then went to the other side of the gym. My expectations towards the crowd were admittedly, overestimated. Still, only few folks. It was after all an underground event. And I’ve underestimated the mushrooms. I thought I was gone until it dragged me right back in! There were no more visualizations. But the feeling was there. I went out for another smoke to feel and think. The group of youngins were still there. Still watching and teasing me. It got old pretty fast they eventually shut their mouths off. I was too “lost in the void” to care, anyway.
To be continued...
