Had it Been Anyone Else

What happens when the love of your life is in love with your brother, and he is in love with her?

If Ilyana had fallen in love with anyone besides his brother, he would have fought for her affections. Yet it was Ernol she looked at, her green and brown flecked eyes so filled with love.

Had she looked at someone else that way, Haron wouldn’t have hid his feelings for Ilyana, assured he’d be able to win her over in time. As things stood, he knew Ernol would never let her go. Why would he? Ilyana had managed to get past his brother’s emotional battlements, something not many people had achieved. Ernol was possessive and quite jealous, once he became attached. Haron had seen how fervently Ernol worked for the things he wanted, and the substantial effort he’d put into rising up the ranks of the Forces. How much more would he do for Ilyana?

As a testament to how much Haron would do for both her and Ernol, he buried his feelings. Pretended he no longer loved Ilyana, even though he loved her with his whole heart. He also loved his brother, enough so that he wouldn’t come between Ernol and the one he held most dear.

His brother changed because of her, as much as it pained him to admit. Ernol wasn’t quite so pessimistic now, he smiled and laughed more. He’d told Grandmother she was wrong about Ilyana, and even questioned Grandfather’s orders. Ilyana was the catalyst that pushed Ernol into becoming who he could be. A man who learned to examine his loyalties while staying true to his convictions. Through her, he had found what was truly important to him. She had shaken up his brother’s life, but he’d come out better for it. For that, Haron secretly thanked her. You can read the rest here on Ao3!

GOD I loved your MidCin reviews. I remember loving Rayvis (I was just 14 back then, so yeah...) because I felt he was the most decent guy there. Also, I don't remember they having SO much sex so I wasn't uncomfortable, at least. But I agree most of my love for this game are pure nostalgia and respect to my first true otome I've played. I wanted to ask: did you play any other Cybird game? I'd love to see you roasting them more (esp their twu wuv's w/o chemistry problem!!)

Hmm, I think I tested out that historical Cybird one with the voice acting because the MC's a seamstress but the buck wild use of historical figures and the convenient absence of an actual black man who actually lived in Japan at the time, serving under Oda Nobunaga(!) just kinda made me not want to play. Especially when these men's lives were incredibly interesting in their own right; the forced romance and vaguely explained time travel was wholly unnecessary. They couldn't even do anything meaningful with the seamstress thing besides oh she sews some stuff for her beau du jour. Dude voice acting Masamune's hot though >.>

As you might have noticed, I have markedly less time to play anything in general, much less otomes with lacklustre plots. In fact, I have an ever growing list of games/books that I mean to get to but, uh, haven't touched yet >.<

But let me end on a more positive note: a recommendation of otomes I did enjoy!

Changeling by Steamberry Studio: The team put a lot of effort into researching and building the lore in this one. I appreciate the fact that high school teenagers read like high school teenagers and since our characters are, well, teenagers, you aren't getting huge all or nothing confessions of love in the romantic endings. Also, I just saw that it's on sale for another day?! Quick, check out the demo, and take advantage of the sale if the VN's to your fancy! Side note, Steamberry's newest otome is on my [much too long] list of games to play, that's how much I enjoyed Changeling.

Ebon Light by Underbliss: Very impressive for a pay-what-you-want. You can even customize the MC's look! I found the lore interesting but a touch underdeveloped, and the story had a few pacing issues, but all in all, I had lots of fun playing.

War of Roses by owl: If you're looking for something short and sweet and relaxing, this might be up your alley. Also has a customizable MC!

Arcade Spirits by Fiction Factory: I low-key love the setting of this game. I wouldn't necessarily categorise this game as an otome since you can keep all relationships platonic and you don't have to play as a female MC. As a paid game, I kind of wish the MC customization had more options and that the different love interest routes varied more. It's not my favourite of the VNs I've played "recently" but I do like the world and appreciate the love that clearly went into making the game.

In no particular order, visual novels that live rent free in my soul...

Royal Alchemist and Royal Order by @niftyvisuals - I love romance combined with skill checks. I felt like the plot was really well fleshed out, too.

Andromeda Six by Wanderlust Games. - <3 sci-fi and also Calderon and Damon are mine!!

Ebon Light by @underbliss - this was the first visual novel I ever played and it's sooooo good, it really caught me off guard.

Infinite Stars - another great sci-fi one.

Imperial Grace by @synstoria - this one is gender locked and it's an otome but I'm a suck for royal things (hence my own game haha).

Red Embrace: Hollywood by @argentgames- oh shit, this game is gritty and deals with some heavy shit in the best way. 11/10. Can't sink my teeth into it enough ;D Markus is just...chef's kiss.

When The Night Comes by Lunaris Games - August is just...incredible and I love them so much <3 their romance route really f'd me up (in a good way).

Errant Kingdom by Lunaris Games - you don't have to romance in this game. I do enjoy that, personally, and I love Lucien and Erik with a vengeance.

Gilded Shadows by @steamberrystudio - this one is GxB genderlocked as well but damn Ari is *heart eyes*.

Super/Human Identity by Rock A Role Games - pretty cool premise and gotta love superpowers.

Oathbreaker Season 1 and Season 2 by @larkylabs - also otome/genderlocked but I think the plot and characters are fleshed out really well. The kid is adorbs.

Our Life: Beginnings & Always by @gbpatchupdates - I was so surprised by how lovely this was! At the end of my first play through, Cove had discovered he has autism and my partner has autism, so I thought that was pretty cool and I went and gushed to him about the game. So much representation and variations in this game! 100/10!

But there are other VNs I need to try but hard to choose. If anyone has a good recommendation for what I play next, please pass it along <3

Ok, it’s nearly what, two years too late but I just recently found Ebon Light and I have some impressions I need to share. Twitter just doesn’t give you enough words to really indulge the profuse feels one has about a thing. I had to hold back, and I’m not gonna anymore. So as I said, I found Ebon Light a few days ago and was immediately hooked so I blasted through every route in like 4 days back-to-back.

Duliae and Vadeyn were just * chef’s kiss *. I love Vadeyn for how authentic and vulnerable he was - I can be a quixotic sucker for the kind and open-hearted hero and he fit the bill to a frigging T. He was so warm and expressive and I was putty in his tender hands.

Conversely, Duliae’s keen mind really spoke to my amoral and pragmatic side. He felt mature, calculating, and subtly wicked. I loved how he opens up little by little, just knowing you were home to him made me all blush and mush.

Really liked everyone, though, even Lacey, who I initially disliked intensely. Just great writing throughout, I was gripped from the get-go on the mystery and just really loved all the character interaction (banter is so good in this game). Characters were nicely developed and had their own vibe and every romance felt substantive.

I have to say I really loved all the choices and the mc was so likable, relatable, and you had a lot of options to give her a unique voice in both romance and regular playthrough.

tldr; thanks so much to Ahnna at Underbliss for this ride, and if you haven’t played it give it a try and support her work!

A New Room

In which Haron shows Natasha her new room in Lorne's manor.

With a flourish, Haron opened the door to my new room in Rancor Hold. “Here madralee, I hope you find it to your tastes, and if not, we will change it however you wish.” He turned to me with a bright smile as he stepped inside while pulling me along with him.

When I entered I saw a lavishly decorated room with a couch, two chairs, a couple of low tables, a desk, a bookcase, and a large window framed by heavy drapes. There was beautiful art on all of the walls, and a grand mirror in a gilded frame. Surprisingly, the colors weren't as vivid as the common areas of Lonre's manor, but still brighter and more plentiful than you'd find elsewhere in Gha'alia.

Despite the room being larger than the one I had at Duliae's estate, there was no bed. Though this didn't bother me, the couch looked comfortable, especially when compared to the floor I slept on most of my life.

After my examination, I looked back at Haron with a smile. “It's lovely, and even bigger than my last room. And I don't mind sleeping on the couch.”

“Natasha, I would never expect you to sleep on a couch! No madralee, you deserve so much more than that!” I wasn't quite sure if he looked more amused or incredulous, but amusement quickly won out as that familiar mischievous smirk crept over his features. “This is just your sitting room! Your bedroom is through that door.” He gestured towards the wall on my right, and, indeed, there was a door I hadn't noticed before. Surely my lack of perception was due to being distracted by how grand the sitting room was. At least that’s what I told myself. Read the rest on Ao3!

Vadeyn is more obvious. He's gotten shit his whole life for being soft and wants his LIs approval. Like it's canon that the smallest compliment turns him into a bumbling mess. You can tell straight off he wants to be called a, "good boy." 😉

Ernol doesn't want to be patronized, so he would seek more subtle praise. But you can't tell me that after spending his life seeking (and craving) success and approval from society, he doesn't... *ahem* get off- on praise and encouragement.
