Herri Urrats - or popular march - is an annual celebration done in Iparralde by the association of ikastolak or Basque schools. It includes concerts, activities, and a march to collect money for the schools and promotion of our language in the French state where it recieves no money neither protection.

Basque group Neomak has been chosen to create the song for this year's Herri Urrats edition. It's called "Hor gaude" [We are there] and its music video speak volumes: no Basque-speaker in the northern regions are alone, even if it might seem so. There's a lot of popular and institutional support in the soutehrn side of the Pyrenees.

Here are the lyrics:

Argi ikusten duzun bezala zure betazalak ireki gabe. Just like you can see clearly without opening your eyelids.

Haize ufada, ezin duzuna besoekin geldiarazi. A gust of wind that you can't stop with your arms.

Geu baldin bagara geure lurra. We ourselves may be our own earth.

Zubiak sortzen, jaikitzen ta erortzen ikasi dugu urratsak elkar lotzen. Creating bridges, getting up and falling, that's how we learned to unite our steps together.

On estan tots aquells que “Al Vent” li cantaren? Where are all the people who sang “Al Vent” [“To the Wind”]? On estan les cabòries que sempre rondaven? Where are the worries that were always going around? On estan cada veu, cada crit, cada plor? Where is every voice, every cry, every tear? On estan les cançons, les de cor, les d’amor? Where are the songs, the ones from the heart, the ones about love? On estan els camins que a la lluita ens portaren Where are all the roads that brought us to the fight per lluitar sense por? to fight without fear?

2. SARRERA

Gaur baratzean hainbat gauza egin ditugu. Eta entomologoak garenez “betaurrekoak” jantzi ditugu eta egunean zehar ikusi ditugun intsektuei argazkia atera diogu. Hasieran, matxinsalto bat ikusi dugu, gero, armiarma bat sare erraldoi batean, belar txarrak kentzen genituen bitartean zizare bat eta azkenik, erle bat.

Eginbeharrekin hasteko, aurreko astean zapaburuak ikusi ez genituenez eta urmaela mahukarekin bete behar zenez hori egitera abiatu gara. Bat-batean irakasleak egiten ari ginen ekintzari uko egiteko eta guztiok biltzeko esan digu. Alegia, talde bakoitza “betaurrekoak” jarri behar ditu egokitutako gaiari buruz aztertzeko eta hori buruz hitz egin nahi zuen. Guztion artean hain zuzen ere, edafologoak (lurra aztertzen dute), karpologoak (haziak), entomoloak (intsektuak), meterologoak (eguraldia), dendrologoak (zuhaitzak), ornitologoak (txoriak) eta petrologoak (harriak) aurkitu ditzakegu. Gure taldean aurretik aipatu bezala entomoloak gara eta baratzean gauden bakoitzean intsektuei buruz aztertu behar dugu. Talde bakoitzari eskatu digu gure gaiari buruz informazioa bilatzeko eta hausnartzeko.

Gure kasuan hainbat galdera planteatu dizkigu: Zelakoak dira intsektuak? Zer da intsektu bat? Zer da intsektu bezala identifikatzen duena? Ba al daukate bizkar hezurrik? Material egokiak daude intsektuak harrapatzeko eta hauek salgai daude? Haurrak zer jakin beharko lukete intsektuei buruz? Ze aurreideak dituzte gai honen inguruan? Ba al dakite haurrak izaki bizidunak direla? Curriculumean zeozer jasota dago? Galdera hau guztiak pentsarazteko balio dizkigute eta hurrengo egunerako gehiago informatuko gara. Talde bakoitzari zertaz aztertu behar duten sakondu eta gero mahuka jaso eta guztion artean erabilitako material guztia batu eta bere lekuan jarri egin dugu.

Here’s a traditional song from Zuberoa called “Eperra” (Partridge) sung by Niko Etxart.

It’s been recently accused of sexism since it tells the story of a rape and a cancelled marriage, since virginity was women’s most valuable asset. Keep in mind it’s a traditional song, which means nobody knows when it was composed exactly and, up until not that long ago, this was sadly normal.

You can hear the beautifuil northern accent in the song.

Sofiak uso-odola erabili zuen bere ezkon-gauean.

Hurrengo egunean, telefonoz kontatu zidan

nola bere senarrak irribarre egin zuen izarak ikustean,

begiak itxi eta mingaina igurtzi zuela orbanean.

Senarraren baritonoa imitatu zuen,

 bere izena, Sofia,

garbi, kasto, ukigabe

xuxurlatu zionean.

Barretxoa atera zitzaigun estatikoan zehar.

 Senarraren gorespena jaso ostean, irribarre egin zuen, burua igurtzi zion,

honen ama imajinatu zuen etxean zela, izara-sirena hauek harro erakutsiz herrian zehar,

 balkoietan astinduz, soina harrotasunez puztuta,

bere besoak gorputzari lotutako hego haragitsuak,

hegan egiteko gaitasunaz ezjakin.
