Hey cg, sorry to bother you but I don't know who else to ask. I've been to some of your streams before but I'm always very quiet. I really want to start streaming too, but I'm not sure how to go about it. ;~;

Hey there!!! So sorry it’s late!!!

But I finally have some free time to answer in its entirety so let’s get talking!

First off, Awesome!! I’m glad you’re looking into streaming and probably really excited about it! It It can be a super fun past time/hobby and I definitely recommend it to anyone who just enjoys commentating/company while they do art/games and such!

In order to get started you’ll obviously need a Twitch (or any account for a site you want to stream on. There’s also things like Picarto for creative streams in specific and also Youtube)

After that you’ll need a streaming software!

There’s Xsplit Here

Which I find to be super simple and easy to start with, pretty user friendly but VERY limited if you’re using the free version. I also don’t recommend GameCaster, dunno why but it kinda just... isn’t as good as Broadcaster

And Then There’s OBS

Which is also free but with a LOT more options. If you don’t mind a learning curve and really getting into things, I recommend starting off with this right away. Besides, there’s like a million tutorials out there to help you set it up!

After THAT!!! You’ll want to think about assets!What are those? Well, they’re things you’ll have to make your stream look better and more professional. They’re 100% optional, but I do recommend at least have a nice little break screen.Things like your icon, your profile header, if you’re a Twitch streamer: banners under the stream for things like Rules and Social Media! You can make them yourself, commission them, or sometimes there are Extra Nice people who will make them for you for free, but don’t go around expecting that! (If you want more specifics on assets, let me know!)

From there you can pick your game, either use the screen or game capture, it really depends! And make sure that while setting up OBS/Xsplit you connect it to your streaming account.

You’ll want to test all of your streams beforehand if you’re working with a basic desktop and ESPECIALLY if you’re streaming from a laptop. A lot of game will need fiddling with (either processing speed settings or bitrate.) Get a trusted friend to come to your test and give feedback where it’s needed.Mic settings/audio in general is also very important, be sure that you have at least passable quality and if you need help on that, again, message me!

There’s also setting up alerts and such for new followers or donations and the likes but that’s something you can, again, ask for more information on or can work on yourself using TwitchAlerts (Which I believe is now called Streamlabs or such)
