I thoroughly believe that the main 2 issues plaguing the TV art/entertainment industry today are representation anxiety and cancellation anxiety.
Representation anxiety is the reason why the quality of the storytelling is suffering.
Cancellation anxiety is the reason why the quality of the production is suffering.
ANXIETY is what is ruining TV show storytelling and producing in general. If people were less anxious about the way the story in a show should or has to go, there would be more focus on what actually matters.
There are so many storytelling and production issues in a show because people are not focussing on the overall experience when creating/watching a TV show. Showrunners/creators are not focussing on it because they’re too anxious about providing the “correct” or “best” or “most palatable” representation because if they don’t provide it, their show will just get cancelled.
Honestly imagine the extreme anxiety a showrunner/creator would feel in this day and age of showmaking.
It is a never-ending loop for them of “I must provide the representation that appeases both the audience and the network alike” and then “if I don’t do this as soon as possible, my show will be cancelled and everybody that depends on me will lose their jobs”.
Show disappoints the network, gets cancelled - which in turn disappoints the audience, stops them from watching anything else like it in case it happens to them again - which then makes the network misjudge it as “this kind of content must not be engaging enough for consumers to invest themselves in” but they throw it out for consumption anyway because quantity over quality even though they’re ultimately going to axe it regardless because “it doesn’t sell.”
And then the whole thing happens all over again. 😩
Sounds to me like they should just have better communication with the showrunners/creators and more faith and trust in what they’re able to deliver.
And maybe once in a while CONSULT THE AUDIENCE themselves. Make them apart of the conversation more than with just the standard lazy feedback questionnaires. I’m pretty fucking sure were a BIG WIG network executive to actually take the time out of their oh so busy work week to talk to us about what it is we want and what we don’t - things would be better for all sides. For the networks, the showrunners/creators+team, and for the customers/consumers.
At the end of the day the people I really feel sorry for regarding this is not us. It’s the showrunners/creators.
I feel so sorry for the producers, writers and directors because I know they’re all running rings around themselves trying to please every fucking body and every complaint from either side goes right to them.
They’re the mimimim wage staff at your favourite restaurant where customers and employers alike yell at them over something they’re personally pissed about but they can’t do anything about it other than offer their sympathies and provide other alternatives.
my favourite genre of human — artists that have won six awards, have their work in popular mainstream media, are described by the community as the best of their time and have something like “i draw i guess” in their bio
the watcher stuff is sure feeding my blocklist bc if you're out there even mentioning that 6 dollars is actually okay or using "artists deserve to get paid" as some sort of master argument when a lot of fans are also artists in their own right (and not ones that can afford a tesla) and like they weren't getting paid before i simply do not ever want to see you on my dash x
I wouldn’t say it was just Anya’s plan but she was a significant part of it for sure. Had she had not made the suggestions she did, it’s doubtful they would have won that battle. She was pivotal.
They all contributed in one way or another and that’s what I really love about this finale.
It was a true team effort.
Willow and Tara’s magical abilities and power
Spike’s muscle and determination
Anya’s out of the box thinking and bravery
Xander’s construction expertise and bravery
Giles’ insistence to do what the other’s could not
And of course Buffy’s heroism and sacrifice.
It’s just such a majestic finale in this way. And the fact that there was only one casualty was very much a triumph. Of course - we the fans - would see it differently. But in the actuality of things - they really did WIN that battle as a team.
Hell, even if she doesn’t have her own consciousness and autonomy - I would still give credit to Buffybot as well. She also was needed. I really loved how they turned what was a selfish, disgusting and absolutely vile choice into a very positive, appropriate and beneficial one. They found a use for her that wasn’t sexual and emotional gratification. I really love that.
And it’s really poignant after what we see in ‘I Was Made To Love You’. You could essentially say that was April’s justice. See it all connects.
This entire season is just exceptionally written and it all connects and contributes to give us a truly outstanding and unmatched season finale. I have never come across another TV show in my life with a season that’s this damn good as far as consistency goes in its writing. Connecting all the dots together. I would say maybe Season 3 of Xena (which I adore with everything in me) but even that pales in comparison. Season 5 of Buffy is THAT standard of TV show art/entertainment storytelling that can never be outdone. I fucking love it to pieces. Everything it represents, every bit of character representation and development, every bit of plot/storyline/narrative arc cohesiveness and consistency. It’s just fucking A++
I love your art style so much!! I've never seen anyone else that draws like you do. Were there any inspirations for it?
It's a great question when it takes me all day to gather pictures for it and I have to stop myself before I exeed the image limit on tumblr.
So to make this easier for myself, I focused primarily on media related to TV and the Internet (because you all know what videogames I like and the major animation studios are a whole seperate list onto itself)
But in summary on that end: these studios raised me
My earliest inspirations came from my grandma reading Calvin and Hobbes comic books to me, my parents allowing me to play Humongus Entertainment games on our PC (Putt-Putt, Pajama Sam, and Freddi Fish), and the beginning of preschool shows on Disney and Nickelodeon, primarily Blue's Clues and Rollie Pollie Ollie.
I just happened to grow up in the era where all 3 major networks for kids content were starting to hit their strides in making their own original content, so a lot of the cartoons I watched between 1999 - 2010 were in the 90s UPA revival style, championed through the art of Craig McCracken, Gennedy Tartakovsky, and Stephen Silver. (I will say though that Cartoon Network was my personal favorite).
With an honorary mention to WB Animation back when they had their own Saturday block:
(Xiaolin Showdown, What's New Scooby Doo?, Animaniacs)
Then came the introduction to mainstream anime in the west around 2006ish:
(Naruto, Death Note, Ouran High School Host Club, Panty & Stocking, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Look I'm not proud of Hetalia, but without it, things would've been different)
Which intertwined with the introduction of YouTube and the amount of flash animations and other video content I had uncensored access to:
(Eddsworld, Egoraptor, Mr. Weebl, Filmcow, AlbinoBlackSheep, various anime related memes and parodies, various anime abridged series (Little Kuriboh, Team FourStar)
Homestuck is here, not that I ever understood the plot of it, but mostly because I watched a LOT of tumblr ask dubs related to it and those made me want to start my own tumblr ask blog)
And as an adult from 2013 onward, I appreciated the old MTV cancelled shows, adult animation from Adult Swim, and a couple of animated shows from the post-live actiom era of Cartoon Network
(Clone High, Daria, Mission Hill, Undergrads, MTV's Downtown, The Venture Bros, Steven Universe & Steven Universe Future)
