Normally I only block suspected bot followers if they’re actually spambots, i.e. they have suspicious links in their posts or profiles, but there’s so many of the fuckers lately that I’ve just been blocking and reporting as bots anyone who has a URL that sounds like a real life name that got lightly mangled, an empty blog with the default theme and colours, a blank profile (they’re barely even doing randomly generated phrases strung together with emojis anymore, although I did see one), and an avatar that’s a photo of one or more conventionally attractive women.

So if you just got a Tumblr or were thinking of getting one, this is your sign that you should have at least one post and a tiny bit of customization - change the colours of your blog, put something in the description or title - if you don’t want to be mistaken for a dormant spambot and blocked by everyone you follow.

I was wondering why the suggested tags are so random, and then I realized- the bots are spamming every tag they find, creating a false connection between tags.

Like, why is #programming related to #hunger games? It��s not, the bots are just spamming the tags in conjunction enough for the algorithm to THINK they are.
