Comparing 2 Airing Jdramas

It’s so weird watching T*tsuzen Desu ga, Ashita Kekkon Shimasu and T*kyo Tarareba Musume at the same time because they tackle love and marriage in totally different ways. Like...how to put it.... it’s a difference of “I want” and “I should”. 

In Totsuzen, Asuka wants to be married and become a housewife. The focus is on one relationship that forms at the start of the drama and how two people with different views on marriage can be compatible and happy. There’s of course people outside the relationship that question Asuka if it’s worth being in this relationship if they don’t have the same life goals, but Asuka still goes on to do what she wants. (I don’t know if she really thinks she can change his mind or not, I’m a little confused on that part.)

While in Tarareba, the three leads are all 30 years old and don’t want to be single anymore. Instead of a personal goal like Asuka, there’s this sense of “I should be married by now or soon” and “there isn’t a lot of time for women in their thirties”. A main driving force of this desire for relationships and marriage are societal pressures and it’s interesting to see how to main characters react to this pressure. All 3 characters go through what I view and what they eventually come to view bad/toxic/incompatible/convenient relationships. All because of their fear of loneliness and undesirability once they reach of a certain age. 

I can’t help but to compare these dramas while watching them at the same time. I think I’m enjoying Tarareba a little more than Totsuzen because the main obstacles in Totsuzen stem from jealous people and that’s tiring for me. In Tarareba, the obstacles come from the leads questioning their relationships and their motivations for these relationships. 

Overall, I really love Tarareba’s energy and everything I mentioned above, but Totsuzen has a mature main relationship which I appreciate but the past 2 episodes have been a little cliche in my opinion. I still recommend both dramas!
