Do you think you've about exhausted things to talk about with respect to the 3 Kingdoms era?

Not at all.

This got very out of hand but I'm going to leave it as is.

Oh, sure, some subjects have been beaten to death. There's only so much you can say about the particular events that have been told and retold in folktales, opera, novels, and (in the modern age) movies, TV shows, and video games for the last 1800 years. There isn't a lot left to say about the most famous battles and individuals that hasn't been said already.

There's also a lot that is still relatively overlooked, outside of very specific circles. People who didn't get prominent roles in fictionalizations of the period are still pretty obscure. Events that aren't depicted in stories and adaptations don't get much discussion. That's the sort of thing I try to write about, like with my articles on the Crown Prince Affair (Part I | Part II) or my series on Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan.

But the things I write about are just one very limited facet of the period's history. There's so much more to be said. The stuff I write about is probably the least meaningful. Ultimately it doesn't make much difference who won what battle or what faction took over a government. Individuals varied but all the governments of the time were fundamentally the same. No matter who took power in what region, it was going to be a Han style government, dominated by Han culture. Nothing meaningful was going to change, no matter which of our well-known warlords won. Their battles were largely irrelevant. There's a reason nothing meaningful changed in Shu when it was conquered by Wei, or Wu when conquered by Jin. There's a reason the Sima regime was only superficially different from that of the Cao, and why it really doesn't matter if, say, the Quan family had seized the throne of Wu. Despite individual differences they were all fundamentally the same.

To see what I mean, we don't have to look very far into the future. The collapse of western Jin meant the rise of non-Han polities in significant areas of the former Han/Jin empire. The governments of the Xiongnu, the Xianbei, and and other groups from outside of the Han culture were meaningfully different. Prolonged chaos in the northern portions of the empire resulted in mass movement to the south, into areas previously claimed by the Han people only in name but not in fact. The efforts of Wu and Shu (largely due to He Qi and Ma Zhong) to establish firm control over these regions laid the groundwork for the "sinicization" of southern China, but it was really only with the collapse of Western Jin that the new status quo was established. At the same time, we can also observe the so-called "barbarians" adopting many elements of Han culture to help them rule their new empires.

You could spend your whole career studying something like that.

You could analyze the literature of the period and compare different style and composition across different years and regions. You could dig deep into the economics and study things like government monopolies on key industries, and contrast the different approaches taken by the various rulers of the era. You could study all the material left by civilians who had no part in the "great affairs" of the time. You could study how infrastructure projects meant to support warfare (like the many canals Wei dug) impacted trade and travel for others. You could study the visual arts; paintings, sculptures, miniatures, etc. And all of that gets much more complicated and interesting when you reach beyond the Han culture, into the areas and eras where non-Han influences achieved supremacy and influenced the existing culture.

The era produced some of China's most influential figures whose contributions are far more meaningful than the battles fought by its various generals. Zhong Yao's calligraphy was so influential that we still imitate his writing today. Pei Xiu was one of the most important cartographers in China's extensive history. Hua Tuo's scientific approach to medicine was revolutionary in its time. Du Kui and Xun Xu made extraordinary contributions to music. There are so many others to speak of.

Sociology. Visual arts. Performing arts. Economics. Mathematics. Literature. Technology. The list goes on and on and on. There is absolutely no shortage of new things to study and talk about. A very accessible example is the deep dive @discourseofthethreekingdoms did on the theology of the Yellow Turbans. I don't think I've ever heard that much said about them anywhere. It was a significant and meaningful look at the actual beliefs and ideology of a group usually just dismissed as rebellious malcontents deceived by charismatic opportunists.

Now, none of that is what I generally write about. A big part of that is because that's serious academic work. It's hard, it's complicated, and it requires both resources and training I don't have to get it right. I'm not any kind of real academic. There are people doing this work, and because it doesn't have mass appeal they don't get the kind of credit they deserve, but that's the kind of work that actually matters. People like to read about wars and battles and politics and don't give the same attention to these much more serious and meaningful subjects. It's a damn shame, really, and I can only hope that the ones doing the important work at least receive the respect of their peers.

And if I'm being fully honest, even if I did have the training and resources it takes to do the important work, that's not where my passion is.

I'm a storyteller.

I'm fascinated by these people and their lives. When I get invested in a particular historical era, it's because I find it to be filled with a wide variety of very interesting individuals whose stories I love, and whose stories I want to try to share with others. I like to tell the stories I think don't get told enough; or that get so obscured by fictionalization that the real people involved become unrecognizable. That does end up with me writing about a lot of battles and politicking, because that's where we get a lot of these stories from. When I believe a story is left untold (like with the Crown Prince Affair) I want to tell it. When I believe that a story is being misrepresented, I want to try and correct it. The reason I get so passionate about "history vs. fiction" is because these people were real. Their accomplishments and failures were real. Their triumphs and tragedies were real. Every single name you see was a full human being exactly as complex as you are; and so is every single anonymous soldier and civilian killed in their pointless wars.

Some of these stories have been told and retold so many times that there's nothing interesting left to say. But there are so many others that remain in relative obscurity, and ones where the truth has become obscured over time. That's mostly what I spend my time writing about now.

How would you recommend someone in their late 20s go about learning the guitar? Do you think it's too late to build the right muscle memory?

Age is not a factor in building muscle memory. Pattern recognition and memorization is all you need to pick up on guitar.

I would recommend you get it into it the same way I would recommend to anyone of any age: find out what you want to play – a style, a genre, a band – and imitate that. I know that sounds pretty vague, so I'll try my best to explain what I mean.

I started playing guitar when I was 12 because I really wanted to play along with Green Day songs. At first, I didn't worry about sounding good or getting it totally right, I worried about matching the notes to the song. For a year, I played everything on one string, just matching the note I was playing to the root note of whatever song I was playing along with. Eventually, I got the hang of the fundamental concepts by doing that. Green Day was a really good beginner band to pick because much of their catalog is comprised of songs that only ever utilize rudimentary techniques. Because of that, they were the perfect jumping off point for me.

I ran into a problem that I imagine anyone else would in this scenario, though: eventually, I wanted to play something else, and what I wanted to play was much harder than anything I'd learned previously.

Thankfully, the cool part about learning guitar is that it's an incredibly popular instrument, and guitar players really fucking love showing off. As such, if you look up <any song> "guitar cover" on youtube, you're bound to find someone else who has played the song and filmed it. If you can find a video, watch them play it, try to imitate what they're doing.

If that doesn't work out for you, there are tabs. Tabs might look hard to read, but they're pretty easy. There are tutorials on how to read them in more detail out there.

If none of that works for you, I suggest two things: learn the basic cowboy chords and/or learn scales in a three notes per string format. Learning chords will get your hand used to certain shapes that will be common across the fretboard, and doing three notes per string format will help nimble up your fingers. Eventually, it'll become easy to do those, and while it might be fun to do those forever, it's important not to stop there. Once you get the hang of chords and the three notes per string scales, learn different scale shapes, learn more advanced chords. Keep challenging yourself to keep it interesting.

You're going to sound bad in the beginning. You're going to press frets you don't mean to, you're going to be slow to switch chords, you're going to get frustrated because you can't figure out how anyone is doing shit so fast. When you get frustrated, remember that guitar playing should be a fun activity. You should become good enough at your instrument to facilitate whatever ideas come to your head, but know that it will take you much time and effort to get to that point, and it's okay if that's the case.

And just because I feel it needs to be reiterated: age is not a reason you can't play guitar. I may have been playing guitar for nearly two decades which made it a little easier, but less than two years ago I was 28 and I learned the scales and a lot of the more advanced chord formations. It still took a lot of work for me, but I managed to do it by practicing and keeping at it consistently. If I can do it with my pudding brain, I'm sure anyone else can. How does family environment shape children?

I want to start by saying that the mind of a child is very complex and unpredictable. I know that sounds cliché but it is still very true. That unpredictability makes it very hard to draw conclusions about the child’s mentality and sensibilities from his everyday actions. Today, I will be sharing my thoughts on the general subject of how the family environment shapes how child thinks, perceives and acts. Does it make a difference whether a child has lenient parents or strict ones? In this post, I am going to give two contrasted scenarios to explain the possible impact of parenting styles on children.

Let’s say there are two kids, John and Paul. John has strict parents and Paul has fairly lenient parents. John wakes up every day knowing that there’s a possibility he is going to get yelled at for every foible. So, he wakes up angry every day. That anger destroys any chance of him being cool-headed and going about his morning peacefully and sets him up with paranoia for the day which worsens the situation. So, he wakes up arguing with his brothers. Having lost every iota of incentive to do his part in keeping the house up and running, he gives excuses for not doing last night’s chores – unwittingly developing excuse-making as a [negative] core competence. John’s parents slate him even more for raising his voice at them. John finally gets fed up and storms off to school. This is how most of John’s mornings go. In the evening, when John is back from school and has finished his homework, he feels the urge to play games – a normal urge for a kid to have. John also knows that if he gets caught playing games, he faces a two-hour lecture from his parents and possibly a harsh scolding. John then decides to hide and play games for hours, while pretending to be studying, without the knowledge of his parents. John’s inordinate time spent on games would eventually lead to addiction to games and, consequently, slacking on school work. We all know how that started and how it pans out in his future.

Now let’s talk about Paul. Paul wakes up every day with a smile on his face having never experienced a chaotic morning in his life. Unlike John, Paul never gets slated for his gaffes, at least not retributively. Rather, he gets upbuilding instructions inculcating measured discipline in him. Hence, his receptivity to discipline is incentivized and he is motivated to do more around the house. Paul goes to school every day knowing that the atmosphere at home is not chaotic as at school so he looks forward to coming home, to his haven. (This is quite a contrast to John who feels more at home at school). In the evenings, Paul knows that if he gets done with his homework and gets some extra study in, he’ll get an hour of video games as he does every other day. Paul knows that he should not exceed that designated hour because he would be deducting from tomorrow’s hour – his parents bank his saved hours such that he can draw from them and add to them as he completes his daily routines. Therefore, Paul doesn’t spend much time on games and spends more time with his family which helps him imbibe family memes.[1] He also engages in other extra-curricular activities that help cultivate his social skills and contribute to his college credentials. Paul ends up being a better person than John.

The take: children aren’t automatons, their minds are not trained prior to birth to resist the brain’s urge for pleasure. Their brain will always prioritize pleasure; so, if like Paul’s parents, you appease the brain’s need for pleasure – by letting him play games or hangout with friends - but only for a fixed allocated time per day or per week, then you would see better overall results from them. It’s like feeding stray animals. They know that at a specific timeframe in the evening, you have food for them but not before or after.

Having said that, there is a lot of relativity on this topic. Many people consider themselves Johns but to others they are Paul. Although the lines that separate the Johns’ and Pauls’ of this world are varied, there are two major things every parent can do, commendation and adequate reward. This can be explained by the Expectancy Theory which according to Victor Vroom of Yale School of Management states that: “This theory emphasizes the needs for organizations to relate rewards directly to performance and to ensure that the rewards provided are those rewards deserved and wanted by the recipients” (Vroom). This accords with the concept of EPR (Effort >> Performance >> Reward) theory of Professor Louie Fry of Texas A & M University. My father took me to a conference on Governance in Lagos where he was speaking with Professor Fry on the impact of spirituality on human behavior at work. After the conference, he and  Professor Elefteria Egel visited our home and I asked him to explain the EPR concept in more detail to my brothers and I. Employing these theories is almost guaranteed to be effective in the upbringing of your child.

However, there is an exception. Some children are better than others at taking a lot of flak from their parents. For these ones, it has an opposite effect. The children that respond positively seem to have the innate ability to sift through the flak and pick out the wisdom that their parents are trying to pass on to them. These are the type of children that Apostle Paul spoke of at Hebrews 12:9, in which he said, “furthermore, our human fathers used to discipline us, and we gave them respect.”

Given how human nature works according to scientists, what would happen if John and Paul in these contrastive situations go to work with behaviors influenced by their different circumstances. What should we expect of them with regards to compliance with rules and regulations, at work and in the community? In my next article, we would take a look at deviance and an unpopular factor that plays a role in it.

You didn't know when you started getting those dreams. They kind of just appeared- and one day, you sort of put them together. The dreams you got every day told a story- a very long story. It was the story of a girl in a fantasy world. Well, it wasn't a fantasy world to her, but it did seem like a fantasy story to you. The world worked so differently than the one you lived in- it amazed you. The incredibly tall buildings and fast-paced lifestyle stood out to you the most- you thought that it was amazing how someone could live like that. You loved the mix of traditional culture and modern style, and you thought that it would be cool to live in a city like that. Sadly, that was all a part of your dreams, and you couldn't go there.

"Lady (y/n), it is time for you to visit the temple," one of your maids, Elisa, reminded you. You were the daughter of Duke and Duchess (l/n), and you were highly revered because of your status. You went to the temple every month, receiving the words of the Goddess from the High Priest about anything important. Well, anything the High Priest said would be automatically important. You didn't like going to the temple. It took so much of your day just to get some words. Honestly, you didn't even believe in the Goddess. You thought that some person long ago came up with the whole story for some power. Well, it worked.

"Yes, thank you for reminding me, Elisa. Do you have my dress prepared?" you sat up from your bed, which could probably fit 3-4 people comfortably and was also adorned with intricate designs- too fancy in your opinion. "Yes, I have it prepared. Lila and Celia should be bringing it right about now," Elisa looked behind her to call for Lila and Celia. Just a few moments later, the two maids entered your massive room, and they started dressing you up.

You were used to this, since you had to go through this since you were young, but it still irritated you. You felt like you could be doing something else, something more productive. It was almost like when you had to do something, almost everything else looked more attractive. In your case, it was sitting down and being dressed and fixed up by your maids. You suddenly wanted to do the studying you had put off, and even replying to letters from possible suitors seemed more pleasing- even though you usually hated that.

After what felt like forever, the three maids were finally done with your dress, hair, shoes, and makeup. It took a few hours to do, and the whole time, you wished you could be doing something else, but you obviously couldn't. You were finally able to walk, and so you got up and stretched a bit while waiting for the carriage that was supposed to take you to the temple. It arrived soon after, and you got onto it, sitting across from your three maids. They were ordered to follow you everywhere, to ensure your safety and comfort. Though, it sort of did the opposite with your comfort- it was weird to have people following you around all day. You had started to feel that way when the dreams of the girl in the strange world began, and it never went away.

The ride was another bore. There was absolutely nothing to do other than staring through the window, which you did every time. It was pretty much the same view every time, just in different months, but you had gone there on the same route so many times it wasn't even interesting. Once you arrived at the temple, you walked in like you usually did and greeted the nuns, who led you to the High Priest.

They led you to the same room they led you each time. You were familiar with the temple like your own home, having gone there 12 times a year for your entire life. The room they led you to was a waiting room, the white walls decorated with gold patterns and carefully drawn paintings, the floor holding wooden chairs with white cushions, which were embroidered with patterns considered tribute to the Goddess. You sat on one of them, taking a sip of the tea that was just poured into the cup in front of you. You sipped on it as you waited for the High Priest, also eating some of the cookies place on the table in front of you.

You waited for about half an hour, and the High Priest came in, greeting you with a handshake like usual and leading you to the prayer room, which was as grand as could be. The dome-shaped ceiling made it seem like it was 3 floors from the top of the dome to the floor, and it was painted with drawings of supposedly the Goddess and her great deeds. Stained glass which made beautiful patterns adorned the walls of the praying room, along with gold patterns and carvings.

The two of you walked to the middle of the room, and you started the ritual. You knelt down with one knee propped up and your head facing downwards, and in front of you, the High Priest stood, his hands folded together and his head facing up, his eyes closed. That supposedly helped him hear the voice of the Goddess better. You didn't believe in that though; it all sounded like lies to you and you didn't even believe in the Goddess anyways.

You sat there for what felt like an eternity, thinking about what you were going to do when you got back home. Well, you knew it would already be late at night when you arrived back, so it was really what you were going to do tomorrow. You had started to study the way in the girl in your dreams did, which you found much more effective than the methods you were taught. It was a bit harder and more focused, but it saved you a lot of time. Of course, you couldn't imitate all of the ways, as some used gadgets specific to her world, but you adapted them into what you could do and that worked fine. You also planned to write those letters. At this point, you didn't care if you sent the same message to each of the suitors- you were going to reject them all anyways and you barely knew them, so why would you put in all the effort to write them each personalized messages? You started to form the message in your head, mapping out an outline of it and some of the main points, more like excuses, you were going to say. You didn't plan on getting married yet, and you decided you wanted someone who truly loved you, not some guy wanting your position and status. Plus, you were one of the Queen's Candidates, which was given to each of the daughters of the Dukes and some outstanding people they found elsewhere from other houses.

You were just about done with the outline with the letter when the High Priest called your name, "(y/n)." You looked up at him, eager to get this over with. You honestly didn't care what he had to say at this point; it was usually some stuff on what events will happen to you this month and what to look out for. "You are soulmates with the Prince," he said, with a serious face. You held back your laughter. "What?" you thought. "That's ridiculous." Intrigued, you decided to listen to the rest of what he had to say.

"You are bound by the string of fate. Even when the Goddess tried to separate you, the string held you together, even between worlds. You'll meet him at the party." You blinked. That was all? You weren't going to get any other clues on who this soulmate person is or where you'll meet or anything? You caught yourself staring into space for a moment, and you quickly brought yourself back to reality. You thanked him for the words the same as always and walked out the door of the room a bit faster than usual, eager to try to figure out who your soulmate was.

Culinary arts.

What is culinary arts? Culinary means “related to cooking” while art is described as "human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature." Put these two words together and you start to see that the culinary arts really involves creating something unique and beautiful and something that is completely edible! It is called culinary arts for a reason, not just anyone can create delicious and inventive masterpieces. The culinary arts have been continuously growing in popularity and as a result, more and more international students are beginning to realize the value of pursuing this career path.

People working on this field like in restaurants is commonly called “chefs” or “cook”. Expert Culinarians are required to have knowledge of food science, nutrition and diet and are responsible for preparing meals that are as pleasing to the eye as well as to the palate. After restaurants, their primary places of work include delicatessens and relatively large institutions such as hotels and hospitals.

When you think about what is culinary arts, you should think of the things you love to eat. If you are a culinarian (or chef) then you can decide what your ingredients will be! There are specific cooking methods and techniques to learn, but it’s up to a chef to decide which methods to use and the overall appearance and taste of the dish. They can create fusions between different types of cuisines, or something that is completely unique. When someone is earning a culinary arts degree they will have the chance to learn about all these different possibilities.

In the Western world, culinary arts is a craft and later as a field of study, began to evolve at the end of the Renaissance period. Prior to this, chefs worked in castles, cooking for kings and queens, as well as their families, guests, and other workers of the castle. As Monarchical rule became phased out as a modality, the chefs took their craft to inns and hotels. From here, the craft evolved into a field of study.

There is a great deal of the study of Culinary Arts in Europe was organized by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, a man famous for his quote "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are," which has since been mistranslated and oversimplified into "You are what you eat." Other people helped to parse out the different parts of food science and gastronomy. Over time, increasingly deeper and more detailed studies into foods and the Culinary Arts has led to a greater wealth of knowledge.

In Asia, a similar path led to a separate study of the Culinary Arts, which later essentially merged with the Western counterpart. In the modern international marketplace, there is no longer a distinct divide between Western and Eastern foods. Culinary Arts students today, generally speaking, are introduced to the different cuisines of many different cultures from around the world.

International students who choose to study the culinary arts will have a chance to learn about contemporary and classic culinary techniques and cooking methods. Usually the learning style associated with a culinary arts degree involves a combination of theoretical classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory work. So not only will you learn about and discuss the preparation of dishes, but you'll learn how to make them yourself. For those students who want to pursue managerial positions within the field, learning how to be a leader and use effective communication skills can be very helpful, because most people in the culinary arts work in a team-oriented kitchen environment.

If you really want to earn a culinary arts degree in the USA, perhaps it’s best to know the origin and history first. One of the first American cooking schools was founded in Boston, in the late 1800's. In 1929 the American Culinary Federation (ACF) was founded and became the biggest group of the U.S.'s most prominent chefs. The mission of the ACF is to help professional chefs through development resources, and make a positive difference for culinarians through education, apprenticeship, and certification. After World War II culinary education was in high-demand. Soon televised cooking shows became very popular. Famous chefs such as James Beard, Julia Child, and Madeleine Kamman became household names and culinary icons. James Beard, known as the grandfather of American gastronomy, had a cooking show and founded a cooking school, teaching American cuisine preparation for more than 30 years. Later on people became interested in learning about international dishes, and at the time French cuisine was the very best. Julia Child hosted a show called, The French Chef, wherein she taught viewers how to cook French cuisine. Her show and cookbooks were considered groundbreaking and ended up generating a lot of public interest in the culinary arts as a career. Madeleine Kamman opened a French cooking school called, Modern Gourmet, in Massachusetts. Kamman was from France and blended French cooking standards with American ingredients, the result was an entirely new culinary world to be explored and exploited. People began realizing the possibilities and opportunities the culinary arts presented and began taking advantage of them. After the Culinary Institute of American was founded more and more career-oriented cooking schools were opened in the United States. Nowadays we have the FoodNetwork, and celebrity chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Legasse to look to for new culinary ideas and inspiration, but it’s safe to say that the humble beginnings of culinary arts education has definitely developed into a huge exciting industry full of many career opportunities

Today, there are thousands of Culinary Arts schools around the world. Additionally, most universities, as well as many smaller tertiary schools like community colleges, offer some type of Culinary Arts Degree, which is technically a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

I have some tips to be a good cook. First, seek out reliable recipes. Do an online research of what food do you like to cook. Second, cook several recipes. If you are new to cooking, try to cook as much as you can. Fourth, prepare tougher recipes. Fifth, cook all your meals. Sixth, expand your plate. Lastly, watch cooking shows. Cooking shows are a great way to watch how recipes are made and offer plenty helpful cooking tips.

Most of these things I’ve learned the hard way, and some are from things I’ve seen others struggle with. 

The most work you should be doing in your drawing process is thumbnails/sketching stage.

“There’s no point in finishing a drawing if it’s flawed from the beginning”. That’s what my Composition & Transparent Media professor constantly told us. During our first piece of the semester, he had us stay on the sketching and redrawing stage for a little over a month in order to perfect them. He wanted to make sure the perspective was right, composition was pushed to its fullest, details were added to make every space interesting, the whole shebang. Obviously you’re probably not going to spend a whole month redrawing a piece over and over every time you draw, especially if it’s a time-sensitive project or just a personal piece you’re doing for funsies. However, the sketching stage is where most of the creativity happens. You have to decide on composition, scale, design elements, characters and how they’re positioned in the space, environment, and so much more. And I’d be willing to bet that you won’t get it right the first time.

Give yourself projects when you aren’t in school.

It helps with artist block. The summer between freshman and sophomore year of school I could probably count the number of drawings I did on one hand. To be fair, I was working two jobs 6 days a week so i didn’t exactly have a lot of time, but I found that once I got out of school I had zero drive or ideas. Without assignments from class to draw for, I had nothing to draw, and when I got back to school for sophomore year I had a lot of trouble getting inspired again. It made the beginning of the year really hard for me. Find something, ANYTHING, to draw while you’re out of school, even if you draw fanart for one thing all summer, at least you’re still drawing. 

If a character in your drawing is reminiscent of another character/too generic, think about altering it- especially if it’s a work that focuses on said character.

This really only applies for artists who’s focus/career is character design, but it’s still relevant to others. As painful as it is to hear, it means you might not be pushing your concepts enough. I took a class on Concept Art, and the first assignment was character design. A few of mine were deemed too generic looking, and one was too reminiscent of an existing character. It really hurt to hear, especially since I pride myself on character design and they were for a story I’ve had in development for over 6 years. It really made me feel like shit and made me not want to develop the characters further. But I needed to hear it, and I had to continue developing them for the class, so I ended up overhauling and redesigning the characters until they didn’t seem like the same ones anymore in order to make them more interesting. I hated it, but it’s what I had to do. 

That being said, things like this really make you think about distinguishing your characters and art from others out there. It’s essentially impossible to be 100% original, but that doesn’t mean you cant try your damnedest to make your ideas as close to original as they can get without getting overcomplicated.

When designing characters, mix up the body shape and facial features.

This one is kind of specific, but still important since character design is an important element of illustration. If you don’t vary things up you’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’ from your professors and peers. And frankly, its boring as hell when someone’s characters all look the same. This is something I see a lot, and I can never get attached to an individual character cause they all looked the same! I found that it happens a lot with male characters, they all have defined abs to some degree and perfectly toned arms and honestly, it gets boring when all of someone’s male characters have the same body type. As for face, there is literally no excuse. There are SO MANY KINDS OF FACES MAN. Round, rectangular, circular, heart-shaped, squared. People can have hooked noses, upturned noses, tiny cute noses. Even eyebrows- arched, flat, thick, waxed, faint, or bold. You’re allowed to have preferences for what kind of bodies you like to draw, but don’t be afraid to branch out!

Develop your own style.

As an artist, you need your own style. Imitating other artist’s styles isn’t going to get you far in school or the real world, and chances are, your peers will call you out if your style looks too much like another established artist’s. In order to make a living and gain clients you need a style that you make unique, taking inspirations and aspects from other styles and squishing them together to make one amazing art style baby. Your art style will probably be the deciding factor in whether or not your client hires you! 

Tracing references is OK when appropriate.

It’s easy to forget your classmates are not just from your grade anymore, especially in electives. All of the electives I took had mostly Juniors and a few Sophomores, and my work always didn’t quite have that polish and finesse to it yet that the upperclassmen’s did have. It’s just a fact of life that you’ll always be up against artists who are more skilled than you , but thats because they have more or different experiences. You have to keep in mind that you can’t compare yourself to them, since it isn’t fair to you that you’re comparing yourself to someone who may have 3+ years on you. 

Learn realism to some extent- figures, animals, everything.

You don’t have to like it, but you can always tell when an artist never learned it because their figures are always off. There is a difference between stylizing and not knowing, and it’s almost always evident. You can see it in the way hands are drawn, noses are rendered, and how they shape and place breasts. Do pages of body studies focusing on hands, feet, leg muscles, back arches, faces, all kinds of stuff. You’ll thank yourself later. 

Your professors and peers will know when you don’t put in your best effort.

They’ll know when you aren’t pushing yourself because you’ll make fundamental mistakes. Slightly imperfect coloring, wiggly linework that wasn’t done quite carefully enough, not bothering to fix those damn feet in the finish. They always know, somehow...even if you’re careful with your laziness.

Buying expensive materials is usually worth it.

It may cost more but your work will benefit from it, and they last so, so much longer. I had to buy 3 brushes when my techniques class was doing watercolor, and in total they costed over $100. I found as I used them that since they were hair brushes and not synthetic, they held so much more pigment and water, and I could get a much finer tip.
