Something something baseball and dad's making their sons feel obligated to do 'normal' things. Something something Will having an older brother to look up to who encouraged him to be his true self, regardless of what his dad/bullies said. Something something Mike not having that…

it’s so insane how people act about high school steve bc like outside of the shit we see him do in s1 (breaking jonathan’s camera (tho tbh i’m on his side here) and the graffiti), all the things the characters mention when they’re talking about how he used to suck are so??? nothing???? like. he’s a douche because he didn’t remember someone a year younger than him from one (1) of his classes. I live in a small town and went to school with the same people from elementary through high school and there were Absolutely people in my own graduating class (of like ~140 people) whose names I didn’t know (while I was still in high school, let alone years later). and then the other things that get mentioned are like “he ate a bagel messily” or “he asked stupid questions” or “his parents are rich” which aren’t things he needs to apologize for?? everyone leave him alone!!!!
i know it’s actually like silly and goofy the things robin was mad at him for. one of my biggest pet peeves in fic is when people retroactively make up mean things steve did to robin in high school because like…..she would have said if he actively antagonized her. her literal only complaints were 1. he didn’t remember her from class 2. he got crumbs on the floor 3. he didn’t understand the material (😭?) 4. tammy liked him. like that’s all he did to her. and eddie can’t think of a single grievance he has against steve other than like “you play sports so i just kinda figured you’re evil” so all in all i think it’s kinda unfair and ooc when people write steve’s early high school days as if he was just constantly prowling the halls looking for people to harass.
and i’m not saying steve wasn’t a dick, because he was, but the way it’s presented in the show was much more interesting than the way fanon characterizes him. steve’s form of bullying was being nice to someone one second, then laughing along when his friends made a joke at their expense. it was taking the whole “dude stoppppp 🤣” approach when tommy went too far. it was saying the meanest thing he could possibly think of when he felt attacked. steve cared more about his social status and fitting in with his friend group than being kind, and he outright admits that in s3 when he says popularity was really important to him before he developed beyond that and realized it was all pointless. i feel like we all knew people like that in high school and it feels 1000x more real than the typical stephen king bully caricature who’s like so evil it doesn’t even make sense. and yet. everyone insists on making steve into that

weird they didn’t show nick waking up from his dream at el bazaar about s4-8 but i guess they trust the audience to infer.

best troy and abed halloween costume- dare i say, best halloween costume in the show- one hundred percent the calvin and hobbes ‘couple’ costume. 10/10 brilliant reference but one slight petty grievance that has always bothered me… why isn’t abed hobbes?? is it because troy is more typically seen as abed’s sidekick? because if we’re going based on personality, i think abed is way more like hobbes and troy is more like calvin.

everyone understands that Will had a hard time helping El and standing up for her because he himself has trauma from being bullied his whole life and doesn't know how to fight them back, his reaction to bullying is to freeze. but suddenly no one understands it when it comes to Mike and he's just called an asshole for not being able to stand up and fight El's bullies
i'm not saying he is innocent and did nothing wrong. he could have done more and just handle the situation better but he was just too focused on Will and was in his head and being the otherthinking oblivious dumbass that he is
but just imagine your girlfriend tells you she is having a good time and has friends, she does not mention anything bad and then suddenly she's getting bullied in front of you. when you've been bullied your whole life your first reaction is to freeze, to panic and just wait and hope it passes quickly and they'll leave you alone. Mike did not have any knowledge about her bullying or having any kind of problems, as long as he was aware those people were her friends. he himself has trauma from being bullied (he literally mentions it later on why yall keep forgetting??) and being suddenly thrown into a situation involving bullying can be really distressing.
when you have experience with being bullied even just seeing someone else getting bullied can make you freeze up and panic. and we know that Mike does not stand up for himself when he's the victim. even when you're not on the receiving end of the bullying but you just see it happening and suddenly you're a scared little kid again holding back tears desperately hoping for them to leave you alone.
and i know everyone wants to yell at me "you forgot about Mike standing up to Troy when they were saying shit about Will! so he can obviously stand up for his friends so why can't he for El??" and no i did not forget and yes you may be right but the situations are different. Mike was very well aware of Troy's bullying. he was involved in it. he was the victim there. he's had to deal with his bullying for years it was not a shocking revelation. however he did not know about El's situation at all and your reaction can be very different when you know about something and when you have no knowledge and it suddenly happens
again i'm not saying that he did nothing wrong. i'm just saying that we need to consider his trauma and his point of view and it could make him think less rationally and therefore not being able to help properly. maybe if he knew beforehand that something could go wrong he could be prepared and he would handle the situation better (even if it would be just them seeing Angela and her friends come and they would turn to Mike and say quickly that those people are mean to El he would still have at least some time and could prepare himself). but he did not know that and he was not prepared for this situation to suddenly escalate like this. he was unprepared and probably panicking and didn't know what to do so no he wasn't much of a help.
and maybe we should stop acting like this traumatised 14 years old kid needs to solve every problem and act rationally in every situation and not to make any mistakes (especially when he has no knowledge to prepare him for something distressing) and overall just putting everything on his shoulders and then insult and hate him when it does not end up perfectly well
and maybe i'm just being my overprotective extremely defensive self who's looking too much into this who knows
and i can't even properly put into words what i'm trying to say but if it makes sense to someone then great!
#mike wheeler#byler#Will is not a bad guy for not being able to stand up for El#that boy has so much ptsd from everything he's been through in his life he never stands up to his bullies#his survival tactic is to stay quiet and hope assholes won't bother him#and Mike isn't a bad guy either#no it is not an excuse for him being a bitch to El especially after she hit Angela#but again he was not prepared for anything like this to happen and it all escalated so quickly and ended up in violence#and he didn't even properly know and process what just happened#and i'm also sick of seeing everyone hating him and calling him a hypocrite for this whole thing#because 'he was okay with El using violence against his bullies' when those situations are so so different#El hurt the bullies because they literally made Mike jump off a cliff and threatend Dustin with a knife#El used violence against Mike's bullies because Mike almost lost his life he was not being humiliated#and i'm not saying that being humiliated like El was isn't bad because i know how painful and traumatising it can be#but in Mike's situation she used violence against violence and that is still different#also that happened in s1 and they were still kids and since then Mike saw so much violence and death#that it would be understandable for him to have a different view on it now#if El would humiliate Angela back like she did with Troy at first#i'm pretty sure Mike would understand that better so maybe calm down with that hate yea?#but then again it is just a speculation and my opinion so you do you#blue's 'Mike's extreme defender' ramblings

Community Rewatch - S1e2
Spanish 101
The episode starts with the Dean making an announcement about raising awareness for the homeless, and later on in season 6 he makes an announcement about Britta 'raising awareness for homelessness' by... Being homeless
The thing that was so oddly... Charming? About Pierce in the beginning is that he genuinely thinks he's helping when he says and does ridiculous shit. Like when he mistakes the word tardy for the r-slur and says not to say 'that word' around Abed... Like, I feel as though he really thinks he's being a good person by saying that, but it's just so wrong on so many levels. You could say he's... Streets behind.
This is our first M'Lady-M'Lord moment!!!
I feel like Annie would be more aware of the global socio-policital climate surrounding Guatemala since she's stereotyped as Type A and a classic book-smart nerd. However, it is early on in the series where everybody wasn't perfectly fleshed out, plus, there are plenty of people that are very intelligent when it comes to school and have no idea what is happening in the rest of the world.
The commentary about Israel and Palestine in Pierce's performance really stuck out to me due to everything that's going on in the world right now. (And the fact that Pierce is apparently anti-Isreal- although his reasons are definitely more anti-Semitic than actual criticisms of the government- plus, I don't think that means he's on Palestine's side either, because it's Pierce 🙄)
I just want to know how Jeff and Pierce ended up roping Annie into their presentation. Did they ask for volunteers? Did they force her into that boat? Why was there stereotypical native American iconography involved???
Also, Professor Chang uses the Italian flag, not the Mexican flag when handing out the partnered assignments
Our first Trobed end-tag! The biblioteca rap!!!
While the whole rapping session really sticks out to me as a form a stimming, Abed's repeated "yeah boy, boy" speaks to me specifically

Trobed with title Social Mechanics?
It comes as a surprise, even to Troy himself, when he offers the idea to Abed. A part of him still needed getting used to the fact that community college Troy doesn't need to be the same as high school Troy was. Because he knows in high school Troy wouldn't be friends with someone like Abed - the popular football player friends with the nerdy film guy? Not in his school, definitely not with his group of friends. And yet, here Troy was, not only talking to Abed, but actively wanting to befriend him. Abed is just so much different than anyone else Troy's ever met, and he decides, eventually, that he quite likes that about Abed.
