long post talking about making neopets style art, but not in a way that's useful or coherent or proofread
idk why of all the things that i struggle to do, the thing i keep coming back to trying to pull off is 'imitate the neopets art style circa 2004-2007'. i'm really proud of the stuff i make in that style, but i've always got a nagging feeling about how there's like, very few applications for this very specific skill i'm building, and i could be spending this time improving at anatomy or perspective or anything else. i guess that's just the power of 'wanting to learn something really bad' combined with, critically, 'believing im really close to figuring it out'
there's something about the line weights on a lot of old pets that's really hard for me to capture, and i've gone through a bunch of different ideas of why that is- like, maybe its easier to do in flash, or its something about the way i have the pressure sensitivity set up on my pen, or maybe the official artists also carefully shaped and weighted their lines while scaling the drawing down every so often to make sure they 'feel right' on a small scale (lol), or maybe its that shit that artists who've been inking shit for a long time learn how to do intuitively that i'm just not at the level of yet.
Tumblr media
i'm looking at this smug bastard like. how do they decide which lines should be thick vs thin. my instinct is to go thicker on the corners of points like the ear tips, but this artist went thinner, and i think weighted the lines heavier on the undersides of shapes where the shadows are? neo artists aren't immune to stuff that frustrates me when i'm making pet art either, almost every pet has some part of their lineart that makes a weird tangent with the damn Circle. the linework on the hands straight up isn't clear at all, but i can tell what the pose is from how the shoulders are positioned and the expression of the character, so i guess that doesn't really matter at the end of the day
Tumblr media
im pasting the lines i'm working on next to existing pets with varying levels of detail, but it might be too early to tell if they have the right level of clarity. i'm also i'm back in photoshop because that's easier for me, but maybe i should have tried flash again- doing the art in vectors does give the finished image that hard to detect Crispness that i'm always chasing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in order, these were drawn in photoshop in 2019, photoshop in 2022, and Flash in 2024. i was going to be like 'oh god, the Vully DOES look sharper than the centibyte, it must be Flash' but honestly i got the halloween one to look pretty close?? maybe i scaled down my photoshop images differently in 2019............ i think i've also gotten better at mimicking the lineart style, so it could also be that, but that doesn't account for why the top one looks kind of blurry in comparison. am i crazy. is it visible to anyone else.
anyway ive gone off on a tangent. for some reason this is what i'm obsessed with doing so i'm just gonna keep on trucking until something else seizes my attention instead i guess

So some more unsolicited dating advice as a guy that has always struggled with dating but thinks that I am better nowadays. The things I've learned is that:
1. "Getting hotter" means mainly, getting a bit more fit, making sure to have good hygiene, good posture, and also things like a good haircut and a style (the fucking hardest thing ever imo).
2. Being comfortable with yourself and therefore confident, it makes a surprising difference in how you act but also how people see you. I assume it is because it lets you "be yourself" or some other cliche that turns out to be true. I also think it helps with things like posture and the third thing
3. I think that you just have to try and create situations where you can flirt and then actually flirting with the person. Things like making a move when you are interested and just asking people out sometimes actually works surprisingly well for some reason. Which is easy to say but so so hard to do and I am not going to pretend that I know how to do it. But I do know that seems to be what my friends who date a lot seem to do and it seems to be my most common reason for missing opportunities of actually going out with people/getting a second date.
Also this is all just my perspective so a heaping tablespoon of salt, but I have tried improving for years and I feel like I am finally feeling results somewhat and I hope it helps or something idk.
This is useful to know! Tablespoon of salt or otherwise.
It's also mostly good news for me, apart from that my posture will always be terrible, and my hair is currently stuck in an unattractive no-man's land between short (kinda attractive) and long (very attractive, so I've been told). Also I'm out of single female friends to flirt with, so I need to find more.

I'm reading an entertaining little book called Spook. But, while it's summary says it's to investigate if there is life after death... the reality is that this book is entertainment. The author writes with a voice clearly trying to pull in a skeptic to read, and tries to insult and joke about all the avenues it investigates *at least as far as I've read so far.
For example, the writer meets a reincarnation investigator. She comes along on one case, a case the investigator thinks is probably not a genuine case. Then that is her only case she judges in deciding if reincarnation is real, not the other dozens of cases that particular investigators institute is researching recently. Not the 2000 case book collection her American colleague wrote, which I imagine being in print would at least be easier to quickly go through and rule out X cases as probably useless for proof, and Y cases with specific elements as "possibilities" with no confirmation of being certain. Instead she sees one case, decides since it's unlikely true then they probably all are. Cool. Also the way she described India just... screams upper middle class American writer trying to sound like she visited some undeveloped rustic poor place and is so traveled and stuck up about it. (I had the same problem with some great informational books I read in college about the fucked up food industry complex, but the info was presented in such an upper middle class "hunting is so barbaric and not normal" perspective that it felt out of touch with people in small town America who hunt deers regularly for food by necessity, out of touch of the many Americans who actually WORK in meat plants and are well aware of how bad it is on their physical and mental health - they aren't as akin to the livestock the writer makes them out as, which felt really out of touch).
She then goes on to the weighing a soul chapter. I feel she breaks down the original guy well (he had a penchant for wanting fame, and could not replicate his results on multiple patients). However, she only asks one current modern day scientist their opinion. That's not a very in depth look, either to prove the soul weighing was unreliable or to discuss in depth the modern opinions from scientists with up to date information on regular body weight loss over a given day while alive.
She is so clearly writing For Entertainment, not to figure anything out scientifically. She wants to be scully but she's not even an iota as thorough. I get it's partly my fault... I am researched inclined, I would read a big boring dry book on Data and proof and counterarguements for what proof is unreliable. I assume her reader base would not tolerate anything so dry and fact driven (rather than snarky comedy narrative driven). So I am just trying to enjoy the book and take note of the books it's referencing, which is where I'll probably actually find more in depth data to look into. And yes, I flipped to the end and her conclusion is "I'm still not sure what I believe" lol. Well 1. No kidding, you did a very poor job at researching so no shit u feel you barely have any new certainty either way. 2. Of course she'd make no firm conclusion at the end, because that could turn off part of her audience if they disagree with her opinion.
Lastly just... God why do certain non fiction narrative (entertainment writing style) writers tend to do this angle that is SO goddamn insulting to the poor and to places unlike their (I assume suburban upper class) own background? It is. Utterly repulsive. I hate the way it dehumanizes and insults and paints as exotic stuff that is... also just as mundane and possibly more normal than the writers particular life. I get that painting their travels as miserable or exotic or freakish makes their narrative get peoples attention but. Idk to me I'd rather read something more respectful or you know... appreciative of that which is different than their own life.

, i'm curious. how did you get into writing fanfiction? or what was your inspiration behind it? i have tried to get into writing fanfiction but i feel like i'm just so unexperienced and straight-forward and like not poetic at all, bc in most fanfiction i've read they describe everything so beautifully even if it's the nastiest thing ever. idk i just love your writing style
Honestly I've been writing fanfics for a really long time, and I just established my writing style this year and realized that I prefer writing in third person and using detail, grammatically incorrect dashes, commas, even some good ol fashion run on sentences (which ppl love to tell me about). A year ago I was still writing fics in second person and I realized that I hate it because I hate the way my fics sound when I overuse the word 'you' or feel like I'm stuck writing for one character and i found it difficult to describe the other characters or even the entire interaction and scene from second person, so I gave third a try and now I'm never going back to writing in 2nd person. I think the biggest thing about writing is knowing that we all start somewhere, I used to write shitty marvel fanfics about steve rogers when I was fifteen in second person and lemme tell you, they were so bad that I deleted everything before i deactivated that old blog.
I started writing because like many other fic writers, at a baseline level I'm a nerdy bitch who hyperfixates a lot. I gain a lot of my inspiration from ofc the shows/media that I write characters from, but also from music, movies, and even every day interactions I've seen or experienced. I'm like hey yk what this song kinda hits fr, but imagine an entire love story based on this song??? or when I watch a movie like 10 things I hate ab you I'm always like, a fic based on that poem or this concept would HIT and then if I wanna see it, I write it. A lot of writers write fics they'd want to read, or fics they think should've been written already and havent been, and that's the beauty of writing, your inspiration should always lie in what you enjoy and what you'd want to consume as a reader.
I think a huge misconception new writers have is that they should have an established writing style, or they should use a specific perspective (first, second, or third), or that they need to be poetic in their writing and use a ton of detail and describe every single bit of the characters appearances, actions, etc, but the truth is-you don't have to do any of that shit to write a good fic. Sure some people might appreciate it, and hell over time you're probably gonna become more comfortable doing that and exploring the realm of writing and expression through writing, but you don't need to be good at any of that off bat, nor do you need to include everything into your fics.
A lot of the popular fics you read or even the fics you see that you fall in love with on this hellsite or any other hellsite are written by writers who dont know what the fuck theyre doing half the time and anyone who denies that hasn't been writing for a long time. I literally second guess myself and my writing to the point that I don't read my entire finished fics ever, and if I do it's because I'm writing a part two or a series and I'm cringing the entire time like "bitch be fucking for real you deadass wrote this???" which is completely normal! You may not enjoy your first few fics that you've written and hell you might be incredibly insecure or even nervous about posting them, but like I always say-POST THEM. You will ALWAYS find someone who's willing to read what you've written, and you have a community of writers who are here to give you advice if you want it and if you ask for it. Not to be a broken record but everyone starts somewhere, and we all grow as writers the more we write, if you're afraid of sounding too straight forward or not poetic THATS OKAY! because this is where you're starting and the more you try different things w your writing, the more comfortable you get and then eventually you'll find your writing style. It took me YEARS to figure out mine, and even now I'm still changing some things up and trying new ways of describing things, people, actions, scenes, ect because we're constantly growing and changing as writers!
I hope this incredibly long spiel helped bby, just give it a try and don't lose faith in yourself by comparing yourself to other writers

hi hi hi i'm new here but i just got through your entire (at least i think so) accidental crime boss mari au and i love it so much!!! also my imagination went wild and here's what it came up with (this is so long, i'm so sorry 😂)
so, Jason teaching the kids street stuff, like pickpocketing and such, nobody can Ever pickpocket Mari (not that they'd try, i think, hahaha), somehow it's just not possible. you think you have her and then find out otherwise. furthermore! she'd probably actually know how to do A Lot of what Jason is teaching (look, saving Paris that many times and seeing the shit she's seen must have taught her something about street smarts, okay?), but whether she's aware of all of it or not remains... unanswered. she absolutely surprises everyone, jaws-on-the-floor style, the first time she does it, especially when she does it consciously. every time she does something unknowingly (and still in the Nicest Way Possible, how even--) Jason probably quietly gathers the kids around so that they can watch and learn in real time from an example. and also, even though she's The Responsible One between the two of them when it comes to this stuff, sometimes Mari helps the kids do something, like maybe pickpocket someone in the family, as a prank
now about the Rules!! more specifically the sword fighting and duelling etiquette rule: auntie Kagami teaches everyone who wants to learn fencing every time she visits. there are tournaments. there's probably a pocket dimension designed specifically for that. it doesn't help lessen the amount of Shenanigans happening all the time but boy does it get competitive
also also also i love the name Mother of Heroes!!!! it's so cool!!! The Brood too!!!
if you've got any, i would love to see some more headcanons with the Sirens or the other dark/darker characters of the city (i'm not that well-versed in the DC universe, so idk what to call them if they have a name, sorry)
also, we already know she's called the Pixie and that she's kinda considered a mob boss and etc., but like, what about the point of view of an outsider? the way it all came to be really must sound like something from legends or fairytales out there on the streets. something so sudden and kind, and if you look a bit closer magical and just so unexplainably other???? kids just disappearing off the streets in that area and then resurfacing again looking well fed and taken care of???? to those disillusioned enough with life it must literally sound like an urban legend or something. but she's real. if you need help you just gotta find her.
HI HI HI!!! oh my gosh all of it??? thank you so much!!
1) i think that Mari knows theoretically a lot of things about being on the streets, but not a lot practically. living on the streets has less to do with being able to fight and a lot more to do with instincts and experience and all these little tics you pick up when all you have to count on is yourself.
there are, of course, certain ‘street talents’ as i call them, like being able to pick locks and con people and having a sense for danger etc, etc.
mari knows that tangible things, because she’s bound to pick them up, obviously. the kids just don’t forget what they’ve learned, so often she sees it in action. Jason also teaches her street talents as well, sometimes on purpose, most times on accident.
there is a difference though, in how Mari uses said talents. when the kids use them, there is an edge to every movement. they use their talents like weapons, like they are shields, all bared teeth and fingers like claws. their talents come from pain and necessity and there will always be something a bit vicious about it.
Mari doesn’t have that, and never will. her talents are tools and tools only, one more to add to her vast repertoire. it’s as impersonal as it gets for her, which means its soft and sweet and used with care. her talents, even in combat or duels, are velvet over steel.
2) Oba Kagami, unfortunately, can’t visit often but when she does, oh boy is it intense. Mari and Chloe are always delighted when she and Adrien visit, but mari spends most of the trip running around and quelling fights and making sure no one loses a finger
3) thank you! i’d like to say id been planning the Mother of Heroes for a while but i came up with it mostly on the spot lol. it fits really well though and makes a lot of sense imo
i quite like it
4) hmmm. im not sure about much of that. despite being thought of as a crime boss, she stays away from the other rogues mostly. I think, if given the chance, Mari would likely adopt killer croc without question, and I think she’s on okay terms with Riddler in that they like to exchange brain teasers and the like, but other than the Sirens, mari stays away from crime.
for the sirens though, i very much like the idea that Harley basically thinks of Mari as a younger sister and is liable to just take her out on the town and leave Selina and Ivy to watch the kids while they go cause trouble for whatever group has caught Harley/Mari’s ire this time.
Ivy and Mari have a comradery in their shared love of plants and similarity in their powers. mari is more expansive and flexible than Ivy’s, but they share the same roots and the two spend lots of time gardening and keeping crops for the kids. (though, harvesting is often a chore for the older ones)
5) Mari being an urban legend is the truest thing I have heard. god, i’ve never really considered the outsiders perspective but yeah. could you imagine the stories people would whisper about the faerie living near crime alley? in the beginning, just after things start picking up and Mari has somewhere upwards of a dozen kids, I think it’d look something like this:
“People say there’s faeries living near crime alley. Magic folk settling back into the city that tried to drive them out. No one knows what they want, but they keep taking kids. The strange ones, the ones that are like them, that aren’t quite human.
“They say that they’ll help you, if only you ask. But be careful. There hasn’t been a kid to go in there and not come out different. They’re stronger, normally. And well-fed. But they also talk of strange creatures and stories no one’s ever heard of and you stop seeing them on the streets so much. (They say they live with the faeries now.)
“No one knows what the faeries want, but we know this: they help when you ask and they keep taking kids. I suppose, in the grand scheme, it depends on how much your willing to risk for some help.”

Hi zu, sorry to bother and is it okay if I ask some advice from you? If not then you can ignore this. If it is.., then..
I can't... I don't know how to help my sister with this problem of her. I am not good at giving advice and for some reason I was the only she likes to hear some advices from. But rn she didn't want to hear any of my advices and this really worried me a lot. B-but its not that serious! Its about artist prob. 😅 it really affects her badly.
You see... my sister is a talented artist than I am. her skill is around below from pro but a bit high from average, in my perspective. Ps. we didn't study in art school but she have a knowledge when it comes to digital. She have that many followers than I have sadly she didn't interact with them because of her social anxiety but of course i'm helping her with that problem.
The main problem is--
There is this artist who followed her and of course she followed back because she like this artist the way they colored their work. This artist seems really like her work. They didn't interact in dm since my sister have some problems while interacting with others in online. This artist... seemed copied her design. Idk if it was a coincidence or purposely copy it. Others may not notice it because their artstyle and color scheme but if you look closely you can see the similarities.
My sister felt shock the time she saw/notice it and I tried to reassure her that maybe its a coincidence until she give me this face-- it hurts to see that face. really. It feels like she slapped me million times hard trying to make me realized that she work so hard on finding a unique design. She used more than 5 reference and use some of her ideas to make the design look more unique.
After reading the comments from this artist's post (who seems copied their design).. i took side glance at her and she has this urge to cry. She hold it back and... as her sister it hurts to see my cheerful little sis like this. She start to lose interest to draw because of this. It really frustrated for me to see her in this condition.
I know that its wrong to tell her to change the design that she really work so hard on it. Especially its already months old. She start to get anxiety to draw... she start to scared that aside this artist... someone would take interest copying her design as well. Its hard to convince her this way and idk what im going to do about this.
I tried to talk to her why not dm this artist and talk about it to sort things out but she refused-- she didn't want to look bad in front of them. I tried to give her some of the advice as I can but it seems it only worsen. I feel useless rn.
Hi! Sorry for the late reply (ówò)
First of all, you're not useless! You're doing your best for your sister, and that's so nice of you already ♡
Secondly, I don't see this as a problem tbh! I mean, it's not right of them, but is it bad for you when someone admires your style so much they try to copy it? It's never a reason to stop doing what you love and give up your own unique style! Your sister should be proud of herself ☆
The thing is, we are all different. No matter how much you try to copy someone else's style, you'll never be able to duplicate it. You can do it for practice cause sooner or later you'll end up with your own style! Hands don't lie ;)
Sure you two can write them and discuss it, there's even a hope they'll admit it and understand you <3

This may seem like an odd question, but how do you think destiel originated in the narrative? Was it always written in? Or do you think it was the chemistry between misha and jensen that instigated it? (Or maybe some other reason...?) I'm kind of curious how Jensen, a seriously good actor, would let the "eyesex" we see just happen accidentally... There had to be some level of intentionality in the early seasons, right? Idk, im sure there's a lot we cant know there, but im curious what you think
Hi there! And first off, I think I need to stamp a big flashing disclaimer label at the top of this one, because I see a lot of well-intentioned but often cringingly misinformed or outright stabs in the dark or assumptions presented as “obvious fact,” and heck...
I am not affiliated with the staff of the show. I don’t know what the inside of any of the writers’ or showrunners’ heads look like, you know? All I know is what I’ve heard from their own mouths over the years, which I’ve tried to piece together logically. I’m not here to present this as some sort of “document of absolute, unassailable fact,” but “this is what logic would lead me to believe personally.”
But there are some important facts to bear in mind while asking oneself how destiel came to be, and how (and why) it evolved.
First off, there’s this assumption which is arguably incorrect that Kripke began Supernatural from the pilot episode with some Grand Vision of a complete five season arc. And he himself has made numerous statements invalidating that belief. We know for a fact that his “original vision” for the show boiled down to “star wars in truck stop america” where two plucky ghost hunters drove around confronting urban legends and myths that were real in their universe. I mean, just look at the first half of s1. It’s all MotW style episodes that lay out the groundwork of the universe’s mythology.
At the start of the series, Demons were so far above the Winchesters’ pay grade, and Kripke joked about how he would never introduce Angels as part of that universe. It was a running theme in the writers’ room from the start of the series. No angels.
And then the writers’ strike happened, leaving them with a truncated s3 and no room to write themselves out of the corner they’d backed themselves into. Dean landed in Hell, and Kripke relented, with “okay, angels, but only if they’re dicks.”
I think it was likely only part of the way into s4 where Kripke stopped fearing that they might or might not get a renewal for s5 when he set about the whole Apocalypse Arc, with 5.22 as a theoretical end of the series. He has said this himself, that it was Misha joining the show that finally gave him a little breathing room to plan for the future of the series in this way.
And remember also that Misha was originally only scripted and contracted to appear in three episodes. At the beginning of s4, even Kripke hadn’t planned out the fate of his universe beyond that.
So while viewers saw 4.01 and the barn scene and immediately began shipping the thing, because that’s what shippers do, I don’t believe that Castiel was (even in Kripke’s wildest imagination) scripted to take on such a large role in canon.
So while Shipper Zero (waves hi at @k-vichan) was already making a case for destiel, Kripke was still focused on making the ratings to even THINK about planning a two season arc to stop the apocalypse. It just so happened that Castiel-- a character that Kripke had never intended to write (NO ANGELS!)-- became the hook on which his vision for the theoretical end run of his little series hung.
From his first appearance, it was clear that Castiel’s closest tie was with Dean. He pulled Dean out of Hell, and as we see unfold over the course of s4, Cas had been charged by Heaven to essentially shepherd Dean through all the necessary paces to make sure that Heaven’s will was served. Even Cas had been misled on what Heaven’s true objectives were, leading to that HUGE moment in 4.22 where Cas was forced to choose a side, and because of Dean’s influence, he rejected Heaven and chose Humanity.
Now, I don’t believe that was written as some sort of great romantic gesture, you know? Because we all know that despite what Dean and Cas struggle through together over the rest of s5, Cas’s duty returns to Heaven as soon as the apocalypse is thwarted. If Kripke’s “original vision” for the end of s5 had stood as the series end, that would’ve been the last time that Dean ever saw Cas. So... not exactly the stuff of shipper dreams, you know?
But Kripke passed the reins to Sera Gamble and s6 marched onward. The intent was to write Castiel out permanently, and thanks to Ben Edlund and 6.20 for giving Cas a voice before his inevitable demise, we end up with this bit of canonical personal betrayal and heartbreak between Dean and Cas.
Granted, going in to s6, Gamble was planning for and writing a single season arc, because she no longer had that assumption of continuing past s6. I think a lot of the romantic tropey stuff in s6 only slipped in because there was the belief at the time that a) Castiel wasn’t intended to survive the season and this is all swell but it’s never going to amount to anything but Manpain for Dean, and b) there was no guarantee they’d even be picked up for s7 to have to deal with the consequences of these choices anyway.
but then... whoopsie... they had s7 to deal with. Including spiraling ratings. By 7.17 when Cas miraculously came back, I think they’d sort of written themselves into this particular corner. Yeah, choices were made in how Cas’s return happened, but after 15 episodes of Dean mourning Cas (and Bobby, and pretty much everything else in his life up to and including Sam by 7.17), the one thing he got back first was Cas. And Cas was the key to beginning to rebuild Dean’s entire life, starting with Sam. And yet... in the same breath Cas returned Sam to him, Cas also disappeared into his own head. He was RIGHT THERE, but he had nothing else to give to Dean right then. All of that led into the buildup to s8, and I think that was really the point at which the narrative began treating Dean and Cas’s relationship as something different, and something more serious.
I’ve been watching early s8 for the last two days, and here’s a little snippet from my angst-ridden chat with lizbob this morning:
mittensmorgulI hate this. Cas, confused: So you think this was your fault?I.e. the moment when it stopped being just Dean and Cas preventing themselves from finishing a conversation, and the narrative itself took over preventing them from finishing a conversation.
mittensmorgulIt may have begun because it was starting to get implausible that they were just that stubborn about talking to one another honestly and openly, but whoopsie that actually made their relationship issues structural to the narrative
elizabethrobertajonesYeah, Ms Tran is like HEY HOW DAREYOU CAN'T FINISH A CONVERSATIONBEEP BEEP
mittensmorguland then in a few more minutes it's Interrupting Moose's turn
elizabethrobertajonesknock knock
elizabethrobertajoneswho's the-INTERRUPTING MOOSE
mittensmorguloh noooooo... go away mooseman! STOP INTERRUPTING.NO SAM, THEY ARE VERY NOT OKAY
elizabethrobertajones:
And their issues went from being a sort of sidebar to the actual narrative structure of the series and became inextricably linked with the larger narrative.
So, fun as it is to go back through the entire series and look for all the destiel along the way, I think that’s most likely when it became a factor that drove the plot, rather than something secondary to the main plot, at least from a structural perspective.
And now, after s13 and going into s14, their relationship and feelings toward one another have become foundational to the actual cosmic structure in their universe. Dean’s grief was powerful enough for Jack to ride across dimensions into the Empty, where even God was unable to tread? Yeah, that’s cosmic. And now Cas is in a similar position dealing with a cosmic, interdimensional dilemma focused on Dean. I mean... it’s literally the foundation of the narrative structure of s13 and s14. Not only are the writers taking their relationship seriously, they’re using it to support the rest of the narrative.
I think this is kinda what you asked, at least? I’ve been typing for a really long time now. D:

Summary of December cause I forgot to do it at the beginning of this month
Plan from December:
try new ‘two days on/one day off’ work schedule to see if it improves how much I’m able to get done overall (usually can study/draw for deadlines 3-4 days in a row and then am unable to do anything for about a week afterwards) / kinda but got messed up by Covid
DAB Lesson 5 (big chunks)✓
Pick an art secret Santa to sign up for and make something good✗
Ideate for dA Star Wars group contest✗
10/31 days figure drawing✓ 11?
ACTIONABLES: revisit all head construction videos from July✗, find and draw 5 shoulder/arm/neck/back focussed references✗(four lol), think REALLY HARD about composition and INTENT OF PIECE ✓ not 'really hard' but def more than before
Overview of December:
Went pretty okay! Finished DAB Lesson 5 and most of the 250 Cylinder Challenge and the 2 days on/1 off schedule worked well enough. Also watched through and made notes on quite a few Artstation composition videos (though thank fuck they're free indefinitely now!). Still trying to find motivation to do my fun personal art which is.... agh it's not great
January plan:
Since I'm making this halfway through the month already let's make this a bit easier...
5 more shoulder/arm/torso references
25 Reilly figures total
25 mannequin figures (10 of which rotated from original pose)
Look at good composition examples every Monday from 17th onwards
notes and improvements from finished stuff:
avon screencap redraw: shadows are really striking but maybe too dark? not sure how I feel about the added crosshatched texture (could probably do it neater next time), tried to think about merging shapes and it worked pretty well, colour seems off on the green side light
minimalist kylo: striking composition but prob too much contrast, hand is completely fucked
atton: finger width is really inconsistent (how did I not notice this at the time), eyes not rotated properly for 3/4 view, inking looks really scratchy, clothing folds are horrible
eskel: too dark for non-full brightness pc screens apparently (which really sucks bc I like the contrast on him/background a lot... idk how to fix this in the future), shoulder perspective kinda messed up, rendering a bit streaky (mostly bc I had to adjust values via curves at the end and it made all the transitions really visible), tried doing different textures but could have done it better, overall pretty happy with how I managed to get an expression & do lighting/composition though
christmas kylux: SUCH STIFF POSES AND EXPRESSIONS, arm on kylo too long/forced in to match up with the hand I already inked, values not great
new year luke: really streaky rendering, lines in background don't fit the style, contrast between light and shadow seems too high?
ACTIONABLES: revisit all head construction videos from July AGAIN AGAIN (someday I'll remember to do this), do at least one thumbnail portrait value study with a low contrast portrait, if rendering try not to blend much and stick to graphic shapes

Do you have any advice for improving social skills as an Fi user? I'm assuming it's harder than for Fe-users. Is there a way I can use Fi productively in social interactions?
Well first and foremost, thinking of social interactions with Fe-users in forms of “productivity” isn’t the best idea for an Fi-user, because Te forms of productivity aren’t usually compatible with Fe ones. The problem with Fi/Te is that it often doesn’t understand the nuances of different social situations, and then tries the same strategy in every social situation even if it’s not appropriate. So if you want to be productive in your way with Fe-users, you need to learn what productivity means to them and why in some situations you can’t use the same techniques. This can be near-impossible with Fi-users, since explaining every different social situation bit by bit is tedious and impossible for anyone with Fe to help you prepare for, especially since there are a lot of unspoken rules Fe-users pick up on without even being consciously aware of them. How well you’ll be able to adjust your communication style really depends on how self-aware and determined you are. You’ll never have the natural savvy Fe has, but maybe you can be less disruptive lol.
Tbh idk how exactly Fi works (Fi-doms for some reason are the hardest for me to get reads on), so my only recommendations for being less awkward in social situations due to Fi is to LISTEN.
I was with this ENFP sx/so yesterday in a group and they dominated the conversation, making it all about what they wanted to talk about. Granted, they were generally interesting stories bc sx/sos have the most interesting stories lol, but it annoyed me how pushy they were. They listened, but were generally fine with interrupting others and steering the conversation back to them and making their judgments of other people’s actions obvious. I never felt offended by them or anything, but Fi has a tendency to want to control conversations to an exaggerated amount without realizing it or finding anything wrong with it. And when Fi-users do listen, sometimes they make ridiculous assumptions about other people’s situations based on projecting their feelings.
Basically, just work on keeping your mouth shut, lol. Develop Te so you can be more objective; it’s not good to communicate so bluntly Te-like with Fe-users all the time, especially ones with soc, but without any standard of objectivity, Fi-users are annoying to talk to. If you want to make sure you don’t assume something, after they are done talking, ask questions. As an Ni-dom I also try to do that, since Ni also projects even if it isn’t in the same way as Fi. People usually don’t mind questions if they are willingly spending time with you, because it gives you more to talk about and it means you are showing interest.
I’d rather have someone asking me questions to clarify something instead of making wrong assumptions about me, and I think that’s probably an opinion I share with a lot of Fi-users, so it’s a good guideline to keep in mind (DO NOT USE IT WITH EVERYONE, BEING ESPECIALLY CAREFUL WITH SP/SX. I don’t want to treat you like you’re stupid or something but my friends with Fi often need specific warnings like that). Fi thinks in terms of itself, so if you broaden what that concept of “self” means, you’ll be able to take into account the feelings of more people. That sounds more ~mystical~ than I was intending lol, but I mean that at the very least learning about what your friends value and making it important to you to take into account will help you get along better with them. It may not help you be more productive with coworkers or anything, but maybe if you learn enough about different perspectives through your friends, you might be less confused when someone suggests something that sounds utterly foreign to you.
Or you know. Maybe you can’t make yourself care about something you don’t. So then I have no other suggestions than to listen when people are speaking skdshsksb
