This matchbox was created on the Lens front, near Vimy Ridge. Private Frederick Arthur Lee of the 3rd Canadian Engineers shaped it from a German shell case. The obverse of the matchbox has the Royal Flying Corps insignia, while the reverse depicts an engraving of a German soldier running.

Saw your post when I was in my kitchen, and this was the coolest item next to me, resting on my shelf.
What looks like a simple tiny vase of some sort, is actually a shell from the first world war. Soldiers would recuperate shells that had fallen all around on the battlefield, empty them of any remaining gunpowder, and use them to create art - carving intricate decorations as a way to pass time when they were stuck in the dug-outs for days.
Decorated shells are the most famous exemples of trench art.
At the bottom of this one you can see this specific shell was manufactured on september 1917, for infantry use (the grenade symbol on the right, as opposed to marine or anti-air use for instance)
My friend gifted this to me after we spent a week visiting the area around Verdun last winter, as a strange sort of pilgrimage. It was odd and emotional, and this week felt like it lasted a month, but it was good.

You never know what’s going to come out of the ground. This is a piece of trench art jewelry. Most likely made during world war 2 by an American soldier stationed in Australia. It’s a 1939 Australian shilling that’s been fashioned into a ring with the name Sarah engraved on to it. The composition is 92.5% silver.

A decorated aluminum canteen, carved by a Russian soldier in a prisoner of war camp in Czersk, Poland during WW1. It is an example of "trench art", i.e. decorated items made by soldiers, POWs, or civilians during warfare/conflict.

Today's Flickr photo with the most hits is an oldie but a goodie. My piece of WWI trench art - a section of shell casing turned into an ashtray.
It's a German shell manufactured in September 1917, in the Patronenfabrik, Karlsrühe.

General Post; Trench Art Discoveries
Some of the things I’ve found whilst searching through all the random boxes at the house are these little fellas: It’s trench art that I’m assuming belonged to my grandad or possibly my great uncle and they somehow made it out to Portugal at the bottom of a box of junk. Two of them were quite easy to figure out: A cute little bottle open that pops out when you press the cap. A little lighter…

Trench Art Corporal Frank Alexander Cameron of Barrie, Ontario, was a signaller with the 2nd Canadian Division. In his spare time, Cameron crafted a four-piece tea set for his mother, sending each piece home as it was completed. The materials include British 13- and 18-pounder shell cases, a French 75 millimetre case, and French rifle bullets. Cameron took four years to complete the set. He survived the war, but his younger brother, Allan Stanley, was killed in action in 1918.
