Endless Tulips
Between March and May, the famous tulip fields (and not only tulips, by the way) bloom in the Netherlands. I didn't get to go there and see the riot of colors, but thanks to LEGO I can build my own. My light engine aircraft pierces the warm spring air somewhere above the Keukenhove Gardens near Amsterdam. The ringing roar of the engine attracts the attention of tourists located somewhere below. You ask: Where are the mills? It is absolutely impossible to imagine this landscape without mills! I'll suggest imagining that the mills are left out of frame :)
Perhaps this is the only work in which I used only plates, not counting the three parts in the aircraft. It was very interesting to try to create volume using only flat parts.
This photo was shot using acrylic glass. See a detailed article on this topic on the Brickcentral website.

2023 Reading Log, pt. 15
I am behind on my writeups: the last book here I read the week of Thanksgiving!
Tumblr media
71. The Body Fantastic by Frank Gonzalez-Crussi. This book made for a surprisingly relevant pivot from Cult of the Dead, as it starts with talking about how Christianity has made a long history from denying and denigrating the flesh. This book is a miscellany of odd medical trivia and historical beliefs about the human body, from wandering wombs to the curative power of saliva. As someone who’s read a lot of medical history books, this one didn’t stand out so much to me, but it would probably be a good starting point for someone looking to learn some of the odder highways and byways of how people have thought about bodies. The author’s sensibilities are philosophical, leaning mystical, and his personality shines through. This is particularly true in matters of food and drink—he feels disgust over eating competitions having gone hungry in his youth, for example.
Tumblr media
72. Eight Bears by Gloria Dickie. As the name suggests, this book covers all of the extant bear species, although more from a cultural and conservation perspective than evolution or ecology. The author travels around the world in an attempt to see all of the bears in the wild, or at least in local captivity (such as going to a panda preserve in China). I think the book’s strongest chapters are the ones in South Asia, where she sees how in India, humans and sloth bears are being pressed into conflict through land use, and the waning in visibility but still strong market in bear bile in Vietnam. I was also pretty surprised about the chapter closest to home—how the black bears in Yosemite National Park were outright fed by park management for decades as a tourist attraction before the realization that, wait, getting large strong omnivores used to associating humans with food is a bad decision.
Tumblr media
73. The Delusions of Crowds by William J. Bernstein. This is an odd one. It poses itself essentially as a sequel to Charles Mackay’s Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, a book about mass hysteria and fads from the 1840s. It narrows down Mackay’s wide scope to two major domains—economic bubbles and millenialist religion, and then progresses in a roughly chronological order. The problems are two fold. One, the narrative never really draws much linkage between these two types of “delusions of crowds”, leaving the book feeling disjointed. Second, the author assumes a lot about the reader’s background in economics (possibly because he’s an economist himself), so the explanations of the exact financial chicanery involved in the various bubbles are not always fully comprehensible. I wanted to like this book a lot more than I actually did.
Tumblr media
74. Spirit Beings in European Folklore 2 by Benjamin Adamah. The second of four volumes, this covers primarily north-central and north-east Europe. Germany, Finland and the Netherlands get the most attention. The monsters contained within include a lot of house and field spirits, as well as many variations of alps and other sleep paralysis monsters. Again, what monsters the author decides fall into his category of “spirit beings” and which ones don’t is somewhat arbitrary. Tatzelwurms and stollenwurms, for example, are listed, even when more traditional dragons are not. I also think that the author needs to be more careful with their word choice, and/or spend more time studying folklore as a whole. For example, the book talks about the spoukhoas, a ghostly hare from the Netherlands. It talks about the spoukhoas as being a “were-hare”, despite the only lycanthrope-like trait in the entry being its vulnerability to silver… which is not universal to werewolves, and only became inexorably linked to werewolves due to Hollywood. No references to being a person at all!
Tumblr media
75. Saurian: A Field Guide to Hell Creek by Tom Parker, Chris Mansa and RJ Palmer. This is an art book, tied into the Saurian video game in which you play as a dinosaur. As such, the book takes an in depth look at the habitat represented by the game, and discusses the flora and fauna of the late Maastrichian South Dakota. The book is, of course, gorgeous. Both in terms of the dinosaur reconstructions and the landscapes, this makes a wonderful coffee table book. This might sound like an odd complain for a coffee table book based on a video game, but I do wish it had a bibliography. The book talks a lot about specific diets and habitat preferences of the animals within, and I want to have some sort of a guide to sorting out what’s supported by evidence, and what’s creative license.

This April marks the 50th anniversary of the princely family of Monaco's visit to Portugal in 1964 (from April 10-22).
It was April 1964 when the princess and her husband brought their children, Princess Grace's mother - Mrs John B Kelly (Margaret)- and a friend couple for a family vacation.
For more than 10 days they made the Hotel Ritz, in Lisbon, their headquarters, visiting various tourist attractions in the capital and beyond. The itinerary took them to Fátima, Nazaré, Alentejo, Cascais and Sintra. Count Bobone, consul general of Monaco at the time, was the organizer, host and travelling companion. He kept a photographic archive of this historic trip that was shared with the Observador and allows us to travel back in time on the ride of the princes to see key moments from this family visit.
The princess arrived in Lisbon on April 10th with her children and mother. The next day her husband came on board his new yacht, the Albecaro II. The vessel owes its name to a combination of the names of the sovereign's children and had just been built in the Netherlands. According to Grace herself, she told the press, that these holidays had already been planned the previous year, but it was not possible to make them happen. They then enjoyed the spring of April. They visited museums, institutions and friends who offered meals in their honour.
Despite this being a personal trip, the President of the time, Américo Thomaz, offered a lunch at the Queluz Palace and government figures ensured that the princes lacked nothing. The family and their entourage would leave on April 22 aboard the yacht for a cruise in the Mediterranean towards home but with the next stop planned in the Balearic Islands.

My most recent horror painting, Let Them Eat Cake. Now, I know there are worse places to be right now in the world, but I do want to spread awareness about the DRF- Dutch royal family. In Europe, the Netherlands is amongst the countries who were struck the hardest by the econominal crisis in the pandemic. We actually have the worst inflation rate inside of the EU. Months ago, it already reached the heights of children fainting publically in places like classrooms because of malnutrition and it's reached the point where people are striking up conversations about having cafeterias at school. We never had those before, because the Netherlands is such a small country so a lot of us live nearby school or we have a friend who does. It's normal in our culture to leave school grounds for lunch to go eat at home and its not even that strange if you eat lunch over at your best friend's house if you live too far. As I mentioned before in my ramblings about the school I live next to, their vandalism is caused precisely because they are allowed to leave school grounds and they often cause ruckus at the local supermarket because once you hit secondary school stage your parents will let you buy your own lunch if its close to a grocery store. Which brings me to the horrors of the Dutch royals. Some royal families like the British have taken the classy move of trying to make the royal family cost the public less money like selling off the Queen's horses. All the whilst being an actual tourist attraction. The Dutch royal family, is the only one I know off, that has the sickening audacity to ask for more money. All the whilst being nobodies who don't actually earn the country any extra money. I mean, remember how I mentioned our king's Argentinian wife before? She attended a foreign political event with our Prime Minister a couple of years ago and journalists literally mistook her for his girlfriend despite being a queen. Regarding her, she is the daughter of Jorge Zorreguieta, you know the minister back during the Argentinian dictatorship? He wasn't invited to the royal wedding because it would cause a political scandal, and she even admitted in an interview that she liked being in power or something along those lines years ago. Yet because of pretty privilige, the general public has never treated her like the walking red flag she is. And that is only the tip of the iceberg. I could rant for ages about the brat that is Amalia. IDC that she's in her late teens. She got to have her 18th birthday during the pandemic because their 'palace backyard was spacious enough for social distancing', insulted over a third of the country when she stated she prefers dating German boys as our men are rude and got one of her daddy's friends to kick out his family so the historical fancy building could be used for her and her friends so she could have the average college experience- when an average college experience could just as easily have been achieved to move in with her cousin Countess Eloise who's also studying in the city. How many college students can afford such an expensive building in Amsterdam? That ain't an average college experience- that's being a rich pampered daddy's girl. My cousins shared a flat when they went to college in the same time. That's what being an average college student is. She had to move out of that building because of the number of death threats she got, and whilst the King and Queen coddle her and sulk to the TV about how they fear for their daughter, all I can say is; "DUH. With how pampered she is in these current times, what else did you expect? More and more average citizens are looking at Amalia's overweight, designer clad body and thinking they could have fed their family for a week with the money she consumnes and wears in a day."

François Musin - On the beach at Katwijk -
oil on panel,
Katwijk, also spelled Katwyk, is a coastal municipality and town in the province of South Holland, which is situated in the mid-western part of the Netherlands.
The Oude Rijn ("Old Rhine") river flows through the town and into the North Sea.
Katwijk is located on the North Sea, northwest of Leiden and 16 km north of The Hague. It shares its borders with the municipalities of Noordwijk, Teylingen, Oegstgeest, Leiden, and Wassenaar. In August 2020, Katwijk had a population of 65.929 and covers an area of 31.15 km2 (12.03 sq mi), of which 6.40 km2 (2.47 sq mi) is water. Katwijk is by far the largest town in the Duin- en Bollenstreek ("Dune and Bulb Region").
Katwijk is a seaside resort with a wide sandy beach. Its attractiveness is mainly due to its laid-back atmosphere. The boulevard along the shore is not spoiled by large hotels or apartment blocks and has not given in to an excessive commercialisation. Although most buildings lining the boulevard are tourist apartments and pensions, most are just three floors high (and none more than five) and offer a distinctive 'feel' of the 1950s. Besides the beach, there are a few museums in Katwijk, like the old fisherman's museum Katwijks Museum and the Spinoza-museum. A few kilometers inland is the Valkenburg Lake Steam Train, a narrow-gauge railway museum where a scenic steam locomotive driven train ride can be taken around Lake Valkenburg. Katwijk has many hotels and three camping places, mostly situated in the dunes.
François-Etienne Musin (4 October 1820, Ostend - 24 October 1888, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode) was a Belgian painter who specialized in seascapes and scenes of coastal landscapes, rivers and harbours.
Musin's father was an innkeeper, shipbuilder and oyster farmer who had spent some time in a penal regiment for desertion during the Napoleonic Wars. As a child, he paid more attention to the sea than his studies. His artistic talent was discovered when he was locked in the attic as punishment and used a piece of charcoal to draw a view of the Ostend docks on the wall.
In 1831, he received his first lessons from Michel Van Cuyck and François-Antoine Bossuet, who would later become famous for his vedute, but was still working for the Port of Ostend at that time. He later attended the local Beaux Arts Academy and graduated after winning a gold medal in 1835. By this time he had already gained some dangerous experience with ships and sailing while tending to his father's oyster beds.
He continued his studies at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where he studied under François-Joseph Navez. While there, he made drawings of surgical procedures in the operating room of Doctor Louis-Joseph Seutin, with the intention of publishing them in a textbook. In 1839, he was drafted in the Army, but his father paid for a replacement (a common practice at the time). In 1840, he began to exhibit and moved to Brussels permanently in 1842, completing his studies the following year. His career was substantially advanced when King Leopold I bought two of his paintings in 1845.

Spikemuth Economic Revival
In response to Epicspheal, concerning Spikemuth’s economy.
Spikemuth may be able to diversify its economy beyond Piers’ Gym and concerts by the development of renewable energy and high-value specialty horticultured products. Minor tourism increases and manufacture of electronics are also options.
---
Renewable Energy City
Given Spikemuth has a small, densely-built, partly-enclosed population, it would be relatively easy to reconfigure it into a model environmentally-friendly city, if perhaps only at the pilot scale.
It seems Spikemuth is based on Llanduno, Wales. If true, then it may have significant wind power potential, as Llandudno is a prospective wind power development site. In real life, the offshore wind farm off Llandudno was resisted due to its anticipated effect on reducing the natural beauty of the landscape, thus affecting the tourism industry. Spikemuth, however, doesn't seem to have a tourism industry to protect. Notably, other than the power generation in Hammerlocke (probably based on Galar particles: it's not specified in-game), Galar doesn't seem to have any power plants. Hammerlocke's power plant might be facing bad public relations since the Eternatus incident, so if Spikemuth loaned out land in Outer Spikemuth (Route 9 next to Spikemuth) to wind power development, it would be a tremendous opportunity to diversify Galar's energy production.
Spikemuth's houses are all very close together, so upgrading its electrical transmission would require fewer materials. On the other hand, they are crammed so close together that there's less operating space, so homes might need substantial drilling or remodeling to install new cables, if the internal systems need upgrading.
Spikemuth's dense population, limited walking space, and crowd of people attending Piers' concerts could also make it useful for pilot studies of piezoelectric panels, like the Watt Nightclub in the Netherlands. Whether this would be viable as anything but a mildly tourist-attracting novelty depends on the Pokemon world's technology. Most likely, it would be a supplemental source of energy to keep the lights on if there's a problem with the wind turbines for a few days (barring excellent energy storage), or simply to emphasize Spikemuth as an town of renewable energy.
Specialty Agriculture
The fact the whole city is enclosed could also make it potentially useful for growing flowers sensitive to cold temperatures, although the market for this would be limited and subject to competition from better-prepared areas. To optimize this use, Spikemuth's roof would also have to be replaced with glass, or some other transparent material. Perhaps a more valuable and distinctive product is taking advantage of Spikemuth's dim environment to grow high-value blanched vegetables, such as white asparagus, and blanched cardoon, endive, leeks, and sea kale. Spikemuth's enclosed, dim, controlled conditions could be useful for growing mushrooms, and the existence of mushrooms as a camping ingredient suggests there's some market for it. Paras's tochukaso is evidently very valuable, and Paras tend to live in low-light environments or caves, so if Spikemuth can import Paras, it could cultivate tochukaso.
Minor Uses
Spikemuth is built as if it was originally a massive warehouse: it has thick walls around it and a roof. Theoretically, it could be retrofitted into a small indoor city: a novelty in the winter. Alternatively, the stabler weather conditions inside the city itself could provide plenty of room to create electronics sensitive to dust or fluctuations in temperature. They would have clean rooms, of course, and decotamination foyers, but the enclosure of the city itself could provide an additional layer of protecton.
Combination:
Spikemuth could, of course, reconfigure itself into a renewable power town using wind power and piezoelectric paneling, and then use that energy to optimize its specialty agriculture, or perhaps to rapidly dry, freeze, or package products for shipping. Circhester, one of the closest towns, might particularly appreciate fresh vegetables: Circhester is so cold it’s apparently covered in perpetual snow, which would limit the types of vegetables it can grow and how effectively it can grow them.

Kosse on Sweden using the One Love captain's armband in the world cup if Fifa would forbid it: "That risk is worth taking. We won't back down. We're women" ♀💪
And Magda on the said Saudi sponsorship
https://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/fotboll/a/gEp5aq/landslagets-tydliga-besked-kosovare-asllani-vi-backar-inte
The national team on the One Love tie: "We don't back down"
DUISBURG. The men chose not to wear the "One Love" armband during the World Cup in Qatar after pressure from Fifa.
Something that will not happen during the women's WC this summer, says Kosovare Asllani.
- That risk is worth taking. We will not back down. We are women, says Asllani.
Captains of countries such as England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands wanted to wear the "One Love" armband during their matches in the Men's World Cup in Qatar. But changed his mind at the last moment after threats of yellow cards, suspensions and other forms of punishment from Fifa.
When the women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand now looms, there is no talk of the matter from Sweden's side.
Caroline Seger , like England team captain Leah Williamson, wants to wear the bandage.
- After all, we are a national team that goes too far and stands for good things. Everyone's equal value. So for us, there is no talk of the matter. Then that question has to be asked, but I have a hard time seeing that we wouldn't do it anyway, says Seger to Sportbladet.
What would you say if Fifa says it's banned?
- Then it becomes a question for the association and a bit where we stand on that question. It will be interesting to see where we stand then, should it go that far.
Kosovare Asllani , who also occasionally wears the captain's armband, agrees.
- I fully support it. One hundred percent. Everyone must stand for everyone getting the same rights in the world, says Asllani.
- I think that they (Fifa) might find it easier to manage men's national teams for some reason. But we ladies and women, we are pioneers. We want to change the world and move it forward.
She is not afraid of possible consequences.
- If it means that someone fines us, then they can do it. If we start a movement where everyone does the same thing, it won't look good if everyone goes around and fines everyone. But it is where we have come that we have to take a stand and dare to take a stand. To take the world forward. And of course I will support it, says Asllani.
Why do you think you women are pioneers?
- We have always had to fight more. We have always received poorer resources. We've always gotten the worse of everything really. If we were to continue to accept it, we would be standing still. We don't want to do that. We want to move forward and we know what we deserve, we value what we do. Because we know how much time we spend on our football.
A few weeks ago, it was also announced that the Saudi tourist agency "Visit Saudi" will sponsor this year's WC. Something that has attracted strong criticism from many quarters, including Magdalena Eriksson.
- Incredibly unfortunate and strange after everything that has been and the debate during the WC in Qatar. I don't understand how they think when you make such a decision, says the defender.
- Above all when the Australian and New Zealand federations have not been consulted. I hope there have grown strong enough voices now to recall. If not, I find it incredibly boring. Above all, considering that there are so many LGBTQ people who will play and feel uncomfortable.
Magdalena Eriksson admits that she feels a certain powerlessness.
- Does it matter if you take the fight? If it still leads nowhere? It's boring. Really boring. At the same time, you know that you can influence what you yourself can influence, to show what you stand for, concludes Eriksson.

Fred meets and falls in love with a muggle he meets during a trip to mainland Europe. He's afraid to tell her about the wizarding world, because it would break his heart if she wouldn't want to be with him after she learns about the magical world...
As Fred walk through the rainy streets of Amsterdam, he look at the Muggles who go about their daily lives here. Despite the drizzle that has continued for hours, people are still riding their bikes, their heads down. They seem to have given up on umbrellas or raincoats and, not having access to a water-repelling spell, stoically allow themselves to be drenched. They’re probably used to this weather.
He doesn’t want the muggles to notice that he’s not not getting wet, but he forgot to bring an umbrella. Which means that he has no choice but to get soaking wet himself.
But it could be worse. You have bought the very rare enchanted pink-spotted herb that they sell at half-prize in the Netherlands and now you only have to find a place to dry yourself, before returning to the secret, wizards-only hotel where you have stayed for the last two nights. Tonight there might actually be some time to party, before you have to leave in the middle of the night on your broom until you’re close enough to apparate.
Far away from the touristic area, where people ask locals for directions to the red light district and coffeeshops, the city seems less busy. Beautiful houses from the seventeenth century prove that the city was already rich long ago, whereas blue bords indicate the way to the Anne Frank House or the van Gogh Museum.
Perhaps he could stay a bit longer to turn this business trip into a more tourist holiday as well. You don’t know much about Muggle-Amsterdam – this might be the time to learn it. The idea makes the cold drizzle a bit more bearable.
As he walks, his eyes drift to a small bar, a coffeeshop, where people are working in front of large windows.
He sees you.
At first he doesn’t notice he’s staring, until you look up and meets his eyes. Whereas most men would’ve immediately looked away, he doesn’t break eye contact.
You’re the first to look away.
Fred hesitated for a few seconds before he changed his plans and walks towards the door of the coffeeshop.
~~
You don’t look up again, immersed in your work. He approaches you. ‘Excuse me?’
‘Yes?’
‘Do you mind if I sit down here?’ he asks. ‘The other seats are all taken and I don’t want to go outside again.’
You look at him and nod. As he takes of his coat, you try not to stare at him. He has red hair, very messy, with bright blue eyes and a lot of freckles. He’s attractive, in a mischievous kind of way
‘Do you live here?’ he asks you.
You shake your head. ‘I am a tourist.’
‘Where from?’
‘Italy.’
He smiles. ‘Then you must really dislike the weather here.’
You snort. ‘It’s a bit colder, but not that bad.’
‘It is rainier.’
‘Much,’ you admit. ‘Where are you from?’
‘England. So I am used to this – more or less.’ He combs his messy locks. ‘What brings a tourist from Italy all the way up north? Did you end up in the wrong kind of coffeeshop?’
You grin. ‘I am not that kind of tourist. I am writing a book.’
He looks intrigued. ‘About what?’
You blush a bit. ‘I am travelling around Europe, trying to find similarities between the people and the cultures. It’s going to be a… what’s the word in English? A travelbook. But at the same time a bit historical as well.’
‘That sounds very impressive,’ he says. A waiters comes towards you and Fred asks for the same you have. ‘One for her as well,’ he adds.
You blush again and thank him. ‘Don’t worry,’ he says. ‘It’s my pleasure.’
He leans towards you. ‘Are you here all on your own?’
You nod.
‘Isn’t that a bit lonely, so far away from home? I imagine it is quite an undertaking, travelling around Europe.’
The way he says it – it sounds as if you have no friends.
‘I wanted to be alone for a while,’ you say. ‘I had to get away from home after my boyfriend broke up with me.’
He raises his eyebrows. ‘I am sorry.’
‘Don’t worry,’ you say quickly. ‘It has been nice, travelling on my own for a while. I got to go wherever I wanted to.’
He smiles. ‘So how did you end up here?’
‘After travelling the south of Italy, I went up. First to Austria, then Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany. And now I am here.’
He raises his eyebrows. ‘That is impressive. Indeed quite the journey. Did you go by train?’
You shake your head. ‘At first I wanted to, but I mostly tried to visit small towns. It is not always easy to get there with public transports.’
‘Small towns?’ he echoes.
‘I went to other towns in the Netherlands as well – but I wanted to visit the museums here.’
He grins. ‘And now?’
‘I am not sure yet,’ you have to admit. ‘I am doubting between Denmark and then up into Scandinavia, down via the Baltic and then travelling towards Greece. Otherwise I could go south. Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal.’
‘Both sound very nice.’
‘What about you?’
He laughs. ‘I am afraid my story isn’t as interesting.’ He grins. ‘I am here for business. But now that that’s over, I would like to be a tourist here for a while.’
‘What kind of business?’
‘I own a store.’ He grins. ‘Did you see the museums yet?’
You shake your head. ‘Not all of them.’
The waiter arrives with his coffee. He thanks him.
‘We could go together, if you’d like,’ he says. ‘I think you know a lot more about Dutch culture than I.’
~
You were a bit hesitant at first, but he seems to be a very nice guy. You like him, and if he turns about to be weird… you’ll be in a big city. Safe enough, you decide. So you start walking back to the center. As you walk, you keep talking.
You have never met anyone more funny than the guy, who introduced himself as Fred. But he not only makes jokes, he is very interested in your stories and tells you about his big family.
‘You must make amazing Christmas photo’s,’ you say, after he has told you that his mom loves making everyone sweaters.
‘They are very itchy,’ he says. ‘But it’s very sweet she takes time to make them for all of us.’
It turns out he has two tickets for the Van Gogh museum.
‘How did you get those?’ you ask him.
‘O, I had them,’ he says vaguely. ‘Let’s go!’
You have a great time walking around the museum. Time seems to fly by. After you leave, Fred hesitated for a moment.
‘I know this might be to soon, but would you like to get something to eat?’ he asks. ‘I don’t want to go just yet.’
You smile at him. ‘That sounds amazing.’
