Dialogue. Dialogue dialogue dialogue. Every day. When I try to do descriptive passages I suddenly forget every word I’ve ever known 🙃

32 Do you have a word/expression that you always use in your writing?

Almost certainly. I’m not sure what though. Probably filler moments like “heaved a sigh” or “shrugged” or “paused for a moment”. Those little things that get peppered into dialogue to break it up. As above, I like writing dialogue, so probably overdo things like this.

It was a kind of warmth he hadn’t felt in years, like he could lay down all his worries for a little while and everything would somehow be alright. He didn’t know whether that was terrifying or the closest thing to magic he’d ever experienced.

2. Hetero of the Year by @girls-are-weird - Prince Wilhelm is nominated for the Hetero of the Year award at the QX Gay Gala. In response, he freaks out. Simon, his popstar friend who's been pining for him for the better part of a year, worries this might mean Wille's secretly homophobic. After all, what other reason could there be for him to get so upset?

3. I Want You to Want Me by SkuldTheNorn - After they got together on film night, there still are some things to clear up. Wille and Simon try their best to talk it out. Which would be romantic and all, if it didn’t lead to him blindly stumbling into the sex shop Simon works at. Once he figures out his mistake, it’s already too late. i ran to listen to the song and it's so soft and i love that. this line specifically too is just very soft and in love. ough.

i think if i were to write a story with this title, it would have to embody those vibes. immediate thought is a character/relationship-study (?) of Wilhelm and Simon post-canon, just delving into their feelings. maybe a few years later when they're a little older and are both on much more solid ground.

It always felt like the world was ending back then. Every time Simon walked away, it felt like Wilhelm was losing a piece of himself. Each step that took Simon farther away was torn from him, tearing him to shreds until barely anything remained of the person that Wilhelm desperately wanted to be. Their rough start had terrified them, and they had spent so many nights whispering to each other, "What if something changes? What if we aren't forever? Would it all have been worth it?" And every time they had an argument, it was always "Is this it? Will we be okay?" But they always came back together like stars colliding.

My most passionately-held controversial Young Royals take: Wille should absolutely abdicate the throne. (Season 2 spoilers ahead.)

"But Wille would make a good king!" There are no good cops, there are no good US presidents, there are no good kings. Monarchies are inherently unjust. The whole foundation of a monarchy is the idea that one family deserves exorbitant wealth and status at the expense of the majority just because they had the luck to be descended from some guys who probably killed and maneuvered their way into power and control. Monarchies are about the powerful dominating and exploiting the masses, and especially the already-oppressed. The writing of Young Royals isn't shy about showing how inhumane the monarchy is, and how holding power does not mean you deserve it. ALSO Wille doesn't want to be king!! He doesn't want that power, responsibility, or exposure, and he's likely becoming skeptical of the legitimacy of monarchy in general. Also "don't let Erik down" is just not a good reason, it doesn't make any sense. (Ok, the only scenario where he should be come king is if he plans to abolish the monarchy immediately afterward.)

"But then August would be king!" Well, ideally, Wille's abdication would result in a crisis that would lead to the end of the monarchy. But even if August did become king, maybe he and the monarchy deserve each other! They're both toxic. If the pressure of being prefect was tearing him up, just wait til he's king. It's not the ethical conundrum that it would be if the monarch of Sweden had any actual political power.

"But it would be cool/historical/good representation to have a queer king and prince consort." No, it wouldn't. It would be cool to have a queer couple cause the end of the monarchy. The systems of domination and exploitation that legitimize monarchies are the same ones that underlie sexism, racism, and yes, homophobia. Letting a queer person be in charge of the exploitation machine isn't justice. Ending the exploitation machine is justice. (This is also why discussions of whether Kristina is homophobic just run in circles-- her individual sympathies or lack thereof don't matter because her loyalty is to an institution that is inherently unjust and incompatible with queer liberation.) Also, Simon would never ever want to be a prince consort or involved in the monarchy in general! Lol! I think that's the clearest part of all this.

Again, I think the show is very clear about being anti-monarchy. It's critical of Sweden's class structure, and the monarchy is the pinnacle of that structure. The "welfare fraud vs. tax evasion" discussion shows the entitled and inhumane mindset of the wealthy students. The very creepy Society shows that the monarchy and the 1% are in a symbiotic relationship with the shared goal of keeping status and wealth in the hands of a few noble (i.e. been around for a long time i.e. white) families.

I do get the affinity for the Cinderella story happy ending idea! It's a compelling fairytale. And that's part of what fanfic is for. But as @communityradiointerndanielle put it: Young Royals and Red, White & Royal Blue have similarities and understandable fandom overlap, but the difference is: RWRB paints liberal aesthetics over the unjust institutions to let progressive-minded people enjoy the Cinderella fantasy without feeling guilty. Young Royals is a cautionary tale about why you don't actually want the Cinderella fantasy.

ok so this is from a current wip, and i dont even know what it is about it that i love so much, im working on having dialogue just to have little moments to enhance the story- not just for my pre-established plot points, and i feel like this is one of the first times where ive really done that

“Ohmygod Wille look at these,” Simon exclaims, dragging Wille by her hand to what looks like hundreds of sheer jellyfish floating in the wall of water in front of them. Wille stands behind her, wrapping her arm around Simon’s waist as they watch for a moment in silence. Simon is captivated by the way they move through the water, practically glowing.

“Aurelia aurita,” Wille murmurs smoothly in her ear, and Simon turns to look at her, a question on her face. Wille points to the small info card in the corner, “moon jellyfish.”

“How the fuck did you know that?” Simon asks when she’s regained her senses, mind still stuck on the way Wille rolled her tongue around the Rs.

“I did a project on them last year,” Wille shrugs, although she looks smug at Simon’s reaction. She rests her chin on Simon’s shoulder as she continues, “they’re pretty cool. Did you know they change color depending on what they eat? Like they turn pink from shrimp, kind of like flamingos.”

Si looks back at the tank, trying to imagine various colors of jellyfish in front of them, soft shades of purple and pink, “that is cool.”

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

Wilhelm thinks about that scene in their favourite book, the perfect, chaotic, dreamy moment when Alex asks Henry to dance and sparks fly in the midst of a crowded room, leading to their first kiss when Henry just couldn’t resist anymore. Wilhelm has written and rewritten that scene so many times, dreaming and yearning of catching a boy’s eyes in the middle of a party, dancing and touching. Wilhelm makes a fool of themself, laughing and chugging drinks and flipping his hair back, hoping and waiting for his fanfiction moment. That the boy who’s too good for them will spare a glance at them.
