2021 Writing Self-Evaluation

thank you to @igarbagecannoteven @clumsyclifford and @lifewasradical for tagging me! i got overwhelmed looking at this the first time but i have spent some time with it and i’m giving it a go

1. Number of stories posted to AO3: 21

2. Word count posted for the year: 191,436 (so close)

3. Fandoms I wrote for: 5sos and a singular atl fic

4. Pairings: cake, one lashton and the singular jalex

5. Story with the most Kudos/Bookmarks/Comments: for all of these it’s the flatmate arrangement with meet you in the back under exit lights in second

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): i think i’m proud of different things for different reasons! i’m proud of flatmate because i never thought it would be as popular as it is, i’m proud of dream makes the sounds (that carry me so far away) because i didn’t think i’d ever be able to write something that long and i’m proud of talk to me, baby because i didn’t think i’d ever be able to write explicit fic and not hate the outcome

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): there are things i am not proud of in pretty much of my writing but i don’t think it’s worth picking something out here

8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: WHENEVER someone tells me someone has read something more than once... something about that feels so incredibly special

bella @clumsyclifford always leaves the most delightful in depth and often incoherent comments when she reads a fic that always bring me a lot of joy

the comment jess @daydadahlias left on ttmb made me cry real tears due to many anxieties surrounding that fic and her reaction was unexpected and wonderful

and molly @burstingsunrise has publicly bookmarked two of my fics which is the best review i could ever receive

9. A time when writing was really, really hard: everything after i posted road trip fic has felt like an uphill battle but particular crises over the act of writing explicit fic, executing lashton after so many months of writing cake exclusively, trying to write magical realism and writing fics for people and being scared they won’t like it and will have to pretend to

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: the entirety of ttmb, who even wrote that fic

11. A favorite excerpt of your writing: in the same way molly consulted jess, i consulted molly and she said this from and what if you'd never smiled at me :

He lines up the bread rolls on the sheet trays, perfectly placed so when they rise they will just touch each other, enough to fuse them together so they can be pulled apart with soft tendrils connecting them. He knows exactly how many; twenty-four to a tray, six rows of four, perfectly placed equidistant from each other for evenness of rise. They will grow over the course of the next two hours; tucked inside plastic and kept warm on the shelf above the oven; the ideal proofing conditions. Calum considers whether it takes perfect conditions to make relationships grow and whether they can be ruined by missing the right moment when they need to be put in the oven.

and then i really like this from i'm not made by design, how can you be satisfied? which i often forget i wrote:

Luke is glamorous and damaged and full of secrets. He’s achingly beautiful and effortlessly sexy and a bit of a headfuck and has the longest legs he’s ever seen on a human, but he’s also just Luke. The twenty-something-year-old man who really likes croissants and always curls up on a sofa and likes that blue blanket Calum has more than any other. The man who giggles and claps when Calum tells a terrible joke and likes to catch Maltesers in his mouth. He’s Luke.

And Calum might be in love with him.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year: i did just that… grow! i only started writing in 2020 and i did not ever think i would end up here. a lot of this year has been about figuring out how to craft stories and character arcs and communicate emotion. also how important pacing fics are, i’m not sure i’m particularly skilled at it but i’m a million miles away from where i was a year ago

13. How do you hope to grow next year: more writing!! just keep doing it. more experimenting more pushing myself out of my comfort zone whilst writing things i want to write. thinking less about how writing something might make you be perceived and doing it anyway. i want to try to write more angsty things and make them not be contrived and predictable. i want my grammar and handling of tenses to improve

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): this one is funny because i have a weird thing about being pretty secretive about my fics however!

i can’t tell you how important molly has been in my fic writing this year. she has read and edited fics for me, reassured me out of multiple crises, helped me with things without knowing context, our conversations and breakdowns have inspired so much. and three of my fics were entirely written for her. molly and her skill in her own writing genuinely inspires me to be better and try harder and her feedback and enthusiasm continues to be one of the main reasons i write

i had amanda @lifewasradical on a few of my docs this year and she is amazing for encouraging and shouting at characters and reassuring that things make sense, and there’s no way those fics would have made it out without her! waking up to her comments on road trip fic really got me to write that thing

also the greatest influence and muse i have: mr luke hemmings thank you for all you are and all you do you are endlessly inspiring to me xox

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: YES mainly the meet cutes i have written. you've been stuck in my brain , shaken up and you are worth your weight in gold all were directly from real life things that happened to me. everything else has elements of things in my life from them like all the baking stuff in and what if you'd never smiled at me , all the bad dates mentioned in we're just friends and every time i mention specific london places in any fic ever (and some other stuff in others but i won’t delve into that too deeply)

16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: only a couple of things as i’m only a baby writer! but here goes:

it’s okay to acknowledge that you want validation for your writing, but if the reason that you’re writing becomes more about that than it does about the other stuff, then you’re likely to be disappointed.

always question the motivations behind your immediate thought of who who should be in certain role or say a certain thing or initiate something. as fandom writers it’s really easy to fall into stereotypes perpetuated throughout the fandom or even what you “usually” do. but think about YOUR characters as their own beings! does it make sense? what would happen if you flipped the dynamic? is that more interesting to explore?

a few people have said versions of this, but if you have something you want to write just write it. even if it’s just a couple of lines of dialogue or a description of something. even if you’re in the middle of something else. give your creativity space and jump somewhere else in the story or open a new doc or write a little interaction you would like to put in something someday

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: i am very excited to get fic exchange out there as it has been a project for a while and there’s another coffee shop au that i’m excited about, but apart from that i don’t have much going on. i got some great ideas from the ask game the other day and i’ve been formulating a couple ideas for some more longer fics so we will see!

C: What member do you identify with most? well i asked megs and she said "young michael" and when i asked why she said "i think you have similar energy levels" and then she said "but with them older, calum. i can't explain that one" so maybe that answers your question. ironically i think i, like megs, am both most and least like ashton, so take that how you will.

for all time low (which i did not ask megs about because she probably wouldn't know) i think jack? i feel like we worked this out in the club once maybe, and i'm pretty sure i was jack, although realistically i'm a mix of jack and alex and also rian a bit as well. i feel like...rian is very similar to my dad, so i'm probably roughly as much of rian as i am of my dad. i know that's a weird thing to say but just go with it. anyway (the way i characterize them anyway) alex is very Thinky and jack is a little more It Is What It Is which i think i am also that way, so. jack.

I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)? i don't know how much i would necessarily call it a guilty pleasure but i'm not gonna lie, i love it when they kiss. am definitely guilty of this when writing, one of the things i have had to learn as i've grown as a writer is that the fic does not always call for a kiss and if i try to include one anyway a lot of the time it will just feel forced. but like. i alllllwaaayyyssss want them to kiss. i'm a kissing slut what can i say.

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with? maybe emo lashton installment #3? or #2? idk it’s hard for me to think that my ideas are angsty when most of them end well. like i wrote a prompt fic (here) where ashton’s childhood home burned down, but like. no one died. and there’s this fic in spideyverse where luke gets really hurt and michael has to fix him up but again he ends up being fine? oh ho ho maybe the four-part fic series based on when the light hits the room by jc stewart, that’s a mashton breakup series but they only get back together in the fourth fic and the second one (you have come and gone (now you’re just a number on my telephone)) is pretty angsty. i’m realizing that me saying numbers here is absolutely meaningless unless you have the encyclopedic knowledge of my fic catalogue that i have but. whatever. wait also for atl fics i have to add the jalex breakup fic (my waves meet your shore ever and evermore) and also the post-apocalypse fic (ashes to ashes) both decidedly angsty. AND THE WORST OF YOU FIC. actually worst of you might win just because i NEVER write about toxic relationships so that one is really a standout. sorry team you gave me the opportunity to analyze my fics and you must have forgotten that i’m a leo aka self-obsessed so now here we are

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share? hmmm ones i would care to share? every idea i’ve ever had is slipping my mind. i haven’t written in a hot sec so i feel like my writing brain has been switched off one sec let me go look at my ideas nest . OH well. okay so. every time i learn something new in my sensation & perception class my instinct is to go “how can i make this a fic” SO. my professor, whom i fucking love, was telling us about different ways that hearing loss can occur, and she said that temporary hearing loss can happen a number of ways and THEN she told us this story about how she one time took a long flight while she had a bad cold, and the medicine that she took for her cold wore off while she was on the flight, and the elevation + the congestion led to her losing her hearing for THREE DAYS. so naturally i was like oh? temporary hearing loss from a non-traumatic incident that went away on its own and had no lasting effects? i can do something with this.

of course i haven’t written in a minute like i said but to be fair i had forgotten about this idea and telling you about it just now made me wanna write it. even more fun because i know the science behind why it would happen like anatomically. but also i just think it would be fun. the shenanigans that would ensue. hand gesture communication. i would like to see it. so there you go. that one is the most early stages that an idea can be (i.e. jotted down in my personal discord server) but hopefully that will not be true for too long.

S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist? friendship? is that a lame/obvious answer? do i even know fandom tropes? there probably aren’t ones i “can’t resist” hmmm actually maybe anything sibling-related but i feel like those are pretty rare not that i’m an expert but i feel like i may be the leading effort on sibling-centric 5sos fics and that is not saying much considering how much i don’t write for 5sos at the moment lmao. i like when things that we know about in real life are included in fics like alex and rian’s tendency to just Always Kiss just for funsies or that luke can’t cook or that ashton like meditates or whatever. this is not always true though some real life things are things i don’t care for but that’s just a question of personal taste. and that is NOT what this question is asking me anyway

1. Number of stories posted to AO3: 14 full fics (arguably, I could expand on any of those at any given moment) and a chapter of one that I do want to post as a weekly chapter update thing as soon as it's done (or as a bi-weekly update with the first part being story and the second being babysitting) but idk if I have the patience for that

Work I’m most proud of (and why): I feel like it's cheating to claim my all too well fic collabs with @tirednotflirting as things I'm most proud of but it's not just the writing but the fact that we actually did that and it was not only coherent but pretty fuckin good?? yeah I'm proud of us for that. for the things I wrote on my own, bella's bday fic probably takes that title just because it's always intimidating to write things for people, especially other writers, and even more so on their birthdays, but also I cannot believe I managed to come up with 5 reasons someone would punch someone else that weren't like unnecessarily aggressive, that was truly the biggest challenge of all

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): none of the works I'm not proud of have found their way to ao3 (if I don't think it's worthy of posting then likely no more than two people have seen it) I'm proud of everything on there :))

8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: bella consistently calls me a criminal, which I love. my sole goal is to stay on her public enemy list. bella's comments in general are like reading a summary of the fic with yelling interspersed it's so funny I adore them like

9. A time when writing was really, really hard: uhhhhh the last 4-5 months of the year? I mean I was still writing, to an extent, but I wasn't writing anything to post for a while and I'm sure that'll loop back around, so I should probably ride this writing high while I can

A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: how much time do we have lol okay The more you treat me cruel felt so out of my wheelhouse and I can't explain why but in the end I like how it turned out, the entirety of if you leave the light on, then I'll leave the light on because it felt out of character for me to write but it's still really good and not to gloat but I don't think many people could have written that the same way I did without crossing any nsfw lines but also the tenderness of it all idk it felt like it came out of nowhere and a majority of it was written in my phone notes before it ever saw a doc because I didn't expect it to all go together into one story

11. A favorite excerpt of your writing: all of starlight fic? every bit of original dialogue in the elevator fic? everything in the street lightning fic? all of the kid scenes in One more time for second chances that I technically wrote last year but haven't posted? *rian in tower of truth voice* you guys haven't seen it yet. also bella says this part in light on:

Jack didn’t wake up whenever Alex had left, although if he thinks about it he can feel Alex falling asleep against him, a memory of mist that could disappear if he tries to touch it now. So he doesn’t. He doesn’t think about how, if Alex had stayed, he could have seen Jack with his glasses on. He could have seen the way the sunlight comes in over the top of the next building in the mornings and leaves a yellow-orange glow on his wall, turning his room into a kaleidoscope when the light hits his mirror. He could have learned that’s part of what makes Jack a morning person, even when he’s mildly hungover. They could have nursed their hangovers together. Jack doesn’t think about it.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year: let me take another moment to say how writing with sam made me a better writer and taught me how to marry description and dialogue better to where I can write things like street lightning without overthinking the way people talk and how to fit that in with talking about like the metaphor of catching fireflies in a jar

13. How do you hope to grow next year: I'd love to see what I can learn from a co-write with bella 👀 also I want to finish this thing I'm working on and slide into cmq's dms like hey wanna read this and tell me if it's any good? 👀

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): @tirednotflirting and @clumsyclifford obviously, they are all of the above, so much so that part of their gifts this past chrismukkah were based on things we've all written. let me brag for a second and describe the magic: sam got a set of pastel pencils etched with a line from a bella fic, bella got a little sticky note pad with a photo I took and a line from a sam fic, and sam also got a little painted dinosaur planter from our all too well sequel 😌

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: mostly just my music taste lmao no there's a fair amount of projection that goes into them but most of it doesn't directly come from things in my life since I'm not exactly full of romantic life experiences to write about and I can't (yet) do justice to the feeling of driving or open night skies or concerts with friends

16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: first and foremost, writing is supposed to be fun. this isn't a job, no amount of other people's [perceived or real] expectations of you should put pressure on you to write if you're not feeling it, and if you're not enjoying anything from the experience of writing, then take a break. words will find you when you're ready. in the meantime, nurture some other hobbies or habits you want to try to keep up. inspiration can come from anywhere, not just from sitting at a keyboard and forcing yourself to get words out.

that being said, no two people have the same writing style, both in terms of method and voice. don't worry about writing the same thing as someone else (unless you're doing a plagiarism on purpose then knock that shit off) because two people falling in love at a coffee shop will always be cute no matter how many times you read it.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: well first of all I need to finish adventures in babysitting so I can start posting that regularly, unrelated to fics I want to write more poetry to submit to journals and magazines, my first one was accepted two days ago (!) and I want to keep that energy going into this year

okay boyz @clumsyclifford tagged me to do this neat-o thing and i knew it was gonna take me a min to do so i have showered and i am now in bed w a bowl of pasta. also yes bella i kinda did this yesterday but it’s ok bc i have more :) so here we go

My faves are Alex and Jess too. Jalex’s friendship deserved better. They barely had any scenes and when they did it was like tense. We got breadcrumbs when Jess crowned him at prom and him not saying she was with him when he killed Bryce. It’s like the writers don’t remember their previous writing. S3 ending established the fml forever thing and Jess calling him the best friend she ever had only for them to like retcon their friendship in s4 as acquaintances

i know i wish we got more scenes of them they’re my favorite friendship :( the scene where she gave alex the crown was super cute and when they sat together but i wish we got more i love them my emotional support characters 💔 at least they’re at berkeley together living their best life

one year of tdiu

i meant to make this post yesterday, but it was kinda rough and i was distracted by a lot, so here we are today. one year (and a day) since i posted the first chapter of the darkness inside us.

i don’t know how to explain how much has changed with this fic, so let’s just say...a lot of writers will have on particular fic that really makes them popular, their “break” so to speak, in fanfiction, and this one was it for me.

prior to this story, no one really seemed to care, about my writing? i got some comments/reviews, but nothing near what i get now, and that’s not me trying to brag or anything. people weren’t too invested and didn’t get nearly as attached as they have with this story and this universe.

i’ve built a community through a universe all of my own and that thrust me even further into writing, changing up my style and finally finding my place in the writing world, and that, to me, is the most valuable result of them all.

this story, this universe started as a simple jalex idea (legit, i have the note on my phone from july 31st, 2017, when i wrote (SPOILER WARNING)

the dialogue for the scene where jack rejects alex. that was all i had at first.

and somehow, it’s blossomed into something so beautiful that changed (and saved) my life. i was in such a dark place toward the end of 2017, and writing this fic was all i had.

this story means everything to me. it’s my baby, my pride and joy, my safe place to escape into when the world is too much and fantasy seems better, and knowing that my safe place is a world i’ve created is so weird and cool and amazing.

i know it’s helped so many of you. i’ve gotten so many people telling me it’s convinced them to seek out therapy, helped them recognize that they have a problem, kept them from doing something destructive...and the idea that my words have had the power to do that is still so surreal to me. i don’t have words for it.

all i can say is thank you. thank you guys, so much. thank you for the love. thank you for being (almost) as invested in my characters and their stories as i am. thank you for supporting me in this and everything else i’ve been doing. it’s only gonna get better from here, and i really do hope you all stick around.

when i said my interests are limited i also mean i write for jalex and jalex only. i wouldn’t be opposed to writing for another atl ship i just don’t have plans to do it :)

YES i do want to be a bit more interactive with my audience (can i even say that when my “audience” is like. 3 people) and often i don’t post bc i just don’t have a good ideas. so requests by prompt ask games would be good. or just come into my inbox randomly and give me something and i’ll try my best lol

18: Any authors you hope to collab with this year?

had not thought about this, i feel like it’d have to feel very… right to do a collab, and there’s nobody or no specific idea or anything that i’m like yeah this should be a collab fic. that being said, i would be totally open to the idea if anyone wanted to.

TBT TUESDAY #1

Okay, so I'm a bit late to this party but better late than never, right? I will start with my dislikes, which are just a tiny few, and wrap with the reasons this show has become my all-time favorite.

Sour Taste

Insufficient Screen Time - The fact that we only got 10 episodes, which made them compress multiple storylines into tiny bits, such that we didn't get to see a lot of back story and some much-needed dialog. It felt like a whole lot happened within the season, yet in bits, though I must commend the entire cast and crew for effectively and efficiently utilizing the little screen time they were given. They fed us well, regardless.

#Salex - Ummm... This is dangerous territory and I know I'm definitely gonna get some backlash from some folks but I'm sorry, Shippers, I don't think #Salex should have happened. I get that they probably wanted some racial diversity and maybe some drama for Sutton but I really don't think they have romantic chemistry. It was just like sleeping with your best friend and I just didn't feel their connection. I certainly see more connection between #Janestripe than #Salex...oh yeah. Their friendship is super-amazing and while I'm happy that Sutton realized this and called it off, I'm not happy they used Alex as a side piece, they should have just remained best friends. Besides, in the beginning, Alex seemed to be closer to Jane (remember the first staff meeting, the party to find Eric where Jane told Alex about her past, their interactions at work, etc), that I thought they may become romantically involved but suddenly, we saw a switch to Sutton, so it felt like the writers were probably considering #jalex (lol) but reneged along the line. I'll probably ask them about this on Twitter.

Sutton and Jacqueline - I wish we saw more interactions between Sutton and Jacqueline. I think it was only twice we saw them together, directly communicating (after the Photoshoot with Cassie and when Jacqueline told her to stand up for herself). Jacqueline's character came across like she was supposed to be mentor for all the girls but in reality, we only saw her constantly with Kat and Jane. I feel like during her dark days trying to consider Ad Sales and finally find her way into Fashion, Sutton could have used the guidance of Jacqueline. But in their defense, I think it had to do with Sutton being an assistant and reporting directly to Lauren and now Oliver. But I hope in Season two, we see more of their interactions; Sutton is hilarious, she would probably need a fidget spinner whenever she has to face Jacqueline alone. Lol.

Kat's Group Date - To be honest, it actually felt somewhat cheesy that Kat was jolted back to consciousness when she heard that Violinist play. Like, it could have been just a thought about Adena popping up in her head or her phone buzzing with another random selfie from smooth Adena 'it-wasn't-a-come-on' El Amin. Lol. Okay, I will just leave it at that. I absolutely love every circumstance that brought Kadena back together and I wouldn't trade those moments for anything.

Sweet Taste

Everything about the trio's friendship.

Music - Perfection, hundred percent.

The Writing and the fact they gave the actors the opportunity to improvise, which gave us some crazy lines like 'He wants to pound it like a hashtag'. Lol.

The fact that the stories were centered on women and the men, while not being the focus, provided support when needed. It is truly refreshing to see shows highlighting women as being able to function without being controlled or directed by male figures.

Everything about Jacqueline - Jacqueline being an authority figure, yet a mother and a friend. The fact that she was attentive to their issues didn't diminish her power or status and that was well-played.

The overwhelming attention to the #Kadena storyline, right from the get go.

The way Kadena was written, we saw the 'straight' girl spearheading the pursuit, not the other way round. It diminishes the long-standing trope of lesbians converting straight girls and that is one of the reasons this show stands out. From the beginning, whatever her motivation, it was Kat who went searching for Adena, brought her close with that 'misunderstood' selfie, offered to help her pack contraband (when she could have followed Jane to Eric's party), sent her a top-less photo, confessed her feelings, freaked out a couple of times at work, nearly jeopardized her job with a crazy tweet, wasted her parents' frequent flyer miles on a whim, jumped into New York City traffic to get to the airport, was prepared to abandon everything and jet out to a foreign land and ultimately did so in the end. Need I say more? This show is a game-changer.

The way #Suttard was written, we saw that Sutton practically paved her way herself, without much help, if any, from Richard. Ordinarily, with her relationship with Richard, we could have seen Sutton rise above Kat and Jane but we saw her struggle and slowly pursued her dreams to fashion, thus highlighting her brilliance and ability to excel.

The overall support the girls gave Kat throughout, with respect to her relationship with Adena, was flawless. They are pure #friendshipgoals.

No labels - The fact that Kat didn't label herself as anything, nor did her friends label her. She just fell in love (with a woman named Adena) and that was that. I hope they don't come under any immense pressure to label Kat, besides, the other girls had no labels as well. We only assumed they were straight because they only dated guys but anything is possible, just like in Kat's case. So, if they have to label Kat as bi or anything, they should also clearly label the other girls as 'straight', which would actually be irrelevant, to be honest. So, let them just be who they are and love who they love. I know some folks have strongly opposing views but those are just my humble thoughts.

Janestripe was actually cute. Ryan was good-looking and quite smooth-talking. He also has the potential to be a good motivator to Jane (remember that writers' room event and the stay-in at Scarlet in Episode 9). Yes, they started like fuck-buddies but soon started catching feelings, which is normal. Remember Sutton said she was using Richard for sex, but look how that ended up, she fell flat on her face. So, I think Janestripe is a workable ship.

Everything about Kat's Emotions - Aisha's depiction of romantic feelings, nervousness, attraction, worry, care, distraction, etc, was completely enchanting. The way it was set up, I found myself going through those emotions with her and THAT is how you know powerful acting.

Everything about Adena's Personality - She was a strong, fierce, rebellious woman, yet fragile at heart; subtle, silent achiever, smooth operator. Props to Nikohl for playing that role so well.

Oliver's character - I love that we got a little glimpse into his life, the fact that he grew up in Oklahoma, didn't have a fashion degree, yet kicking ass at Scarlet. It provided an extra source of motivation to Sutton and to viewers that you could achieve your goals even without the right 'paper' qualification. Sutton had no fashion degree too but she had the practical skills.

Overall, this show has me legit shook every time I think about it and I am shopping for more wigs and glue, in preparation for subsequent seasons.

I dunno if I’ve seen this fic on your Jalex recs but one of my favs is called “just to seal my fate.” So good, high school, social media falling in love, first time. It got posted last Aug and I’m still impatiently waiting for the second chapter 😭

I feel like I’ve read this chapter bc I’ve definitely read this writer’s other stuff and it always fucking gut punches me hard. I probably haven’t added it bc it’s only one chapter, but I definitely can’t recommend this writer enough!

wattpad summary: I guess once you escape from hell, you’re pretty much okay with any situation, as long as it makes sense. You find a balance, a routine, and no matter how shitty it may seem, you accept it because it’s better than what you had before. And you forget that everything can still change, that your life continues to unwind to the point where you lose track of it. You don’t realise, at first, that you’ve lost control. That is, of course, until you come face to face with death. And that’s when it hits you… you’ve fucked up. Yeah, I guess you could say that’s what happened to me.

hard to say........... i love the freedom that AU gives to explore. i used to love high school AU but i more prefer college AU now, probably because i’m of college age. supernatural/mythical AUs can be so fun but i have to be in the right moon. i love non-AU fic too though??? idk, i’m happy with most any genre, whether they’re fluffy or angsty or smutty, as long as it’s well-written.

3. Favorite fandom?

for fic? all time low.

4. Favorite pairing?

jalex are always going to have a place in my heart, but callakarth is probs my fave nowadays. i love gabex A LOT but fics for it are scarce. i also enjoy ryden but i’m happy to read any p!atd pairing.

5. Favorite fic author?

fuckkkkkkk so many in the p!atd fandom that i wouldn’t be able to name them. apodiopsys and americanaffair for og atl smut authors. i think one person i really enjoy who still posts at least semi-regularly is Forever Young. on mibba AKA @theweathersbeenbetter (hi bae) n i’m struggling to think of more ?????? like i know there’s plenty authors i love n respect but they aren’t active any more so they don’t stick in my head.

oh nooooo um honestly my faves tag on atff is ur best bet but all my fave fics definitely aren’t in there cos it’s only the atl ones AND IT’S NOT ALL OF THEM EVEN THEN

my attention span holds better for oneshots but i love the excitement of following a chaptered fic

yes!!! absolutely. i’ll even read fics that have been abandoned halfway through for years if i like the sound of the plot enough.

9. What is the longest fic you’ve read?

boy...... probably one of the ancient famous atl fics like fireworks or poison or a beautiful disaster that are like 50+ chapters long

10. Favorite trope/element/scenario in fic?

i..... am a sucker for all the usual things like roommates, neighbours, living in the same apartment block, fake relationships, bumping into each other/meeting in a really cheesy way like spilling coffee on the other, start off hating each other but with an incredible amount of sexual tension and lust, freaky friday type body switching or a magical genderswap, etc etc etc

11. Least favorite trope/element/scenario?

i love even a cliche trope (as u can see) as long as it’s written well and realistically but things that bother me tend to be bullying, mental disorders, rape.... which aren’t necessarily “tropes” to me, just plot points, but a lot of people can’t write them realistically. OH AND UNREALISTIC KID!FIC. whether it’s the main characters that have kids or the main characters are being written as kids, it really bugs me if it’s not done properly. i’ve spent a lot of time around babies from newborn to toddler age in the last few years and i know not everyone has that benefit but it doesn’t take long to research basic milestones.

12. What turns you away the most from a fic?

literally, walls of text with no paragraph breaks and excessive spelling and grammar mistakes. or if it’s written at a much lower reading level than what i’m at. there’s nothing wrong with being a beginner/young writer, but at 21, i want to read literature that is of my personal reading level, y’know???

14. What tropes/elements/scenarios get you the worst?

character death, obviously, but sometimes the death is more heart-wrenching...... like if they died before they were able to do something they really needed to do OR they died just as they completed the thing they needed to do, or dying just after finally finding happiness/the love of their life......... ghost!fic tends to really get me too. fics where the character is constantly let down and hurt in any way. everything makes me cry, man.

15. Do you mind when characters cry?

i love when characters cry because then it means it’s okay for ME to cry. fuckin crybabies together.

16. How do you feel about character death in fic?

if it’s totally unexpected and makes no sense to the plot/seemed very out of the blue with no foreshadowing then it will probably annoy me. but if i get the vague idea that that’s what i’m signing up for then i’m cool with it. death happens. everybody dies. writing about it is a natural process.

17. Any characters who you can’t stand to see in pain?

ALL OF THEM. I DONT LIKE SEEING ANYBODY IN PAIN LMAO.

just literally it being badly written, generally. like all this bullshit where they’re just having sex with no lube or stretching....... how many ppl in the world can ACTUALLY do that....... probably like 1 and he probably has no functioning asshole left fam. it’s usually really obvious when someone has no knowledge of sex or genitalia even if there’s no penetration too so just do ya research. especially if ur writing something kinky with no knowledge of the kink itself.

not even, i just put it all out there. i mean like i said i read fucking sneezing kink fics and tentacle porn and more lmao. i’m not personally into those things tho ?? like i dont have a rod on for fucking tentacles irl. but irl i do unashamedly love piss (only certain degrees of the kink tho, whereas in fic i will read anything) and i totally have a thing for armpits.

37. How do you feel about parent!fics/lovechildren? How about mpreg?

i usually prefer to read fics where they don’t have kids but i also find great enjoyment in some fics where they’re parents (namely those of Forever Young. hahaha) and i’m cool with mpreg tbh, i never used to like it but it’s enjoyable as long as you don’t think too hard about the mechanics of it

genderbend / genderswap: i totally love it, whether it’s where it’s an AU where they’ve always been the opposite gender to real life or where they’re magically transformed somehow but magically being transformed is my fave lmao

de-aging: not sure what this is?? i assume it doesn’t mean a fic where they’re just younger than they are irl..... is it like some benjamin button shit?? cos if so i’ve never read a fic like that but it would be interesting and heartbreaking

animalising: is this just where they are animals/get magically turned into animals/are hybrids?? i assume yes, in which case, i love it

“Phone,” Jack says, holding out his hand.

“I’m not gonna call her, Jack!”

“Yeah, you’re not gonna call her now. This is a safety measure. You can’t be trusted drunk with a phone.”

Rian’s whole face crumples. “I’m not gonna call her,” he stubbornly repeats, but digs out his phone anyway and slaps it in Jack’s hand like he knows Jack is right. “You’re a terrible friend.”

“Great friend,” Jack corrects him. At which point a cute bartender materializes, a towel over his shoulder, and smiles at both of them.

“What can I get ya?”

“Whiskey, neat,” Rian says gruffly. “Cheapest one you have.”

“He has the alcoholic tastes of a grandpa,” Jack informs the bartender.

The bartender shrugs. “Hey, I don’t judge. I’m more of a wine guy.”

“Just my type,” Jack says, grinning.

The bartender tilts his head. Belatedly, Jack questions his choice of words. Apparently cute bartenders make him lose the ability to assess the implications of his own speech. “So? What can I get you?”

“Oh, I’m not drinking,” Jack says. He jerks his chin at Rian. “Driving this guy home.”

Rian has slumped over the bar, head in his hands, staring down at the bartop like it will reveal the meaning of life.

“Hey, man, you okay?” the bartender asks, brushing the edges of his fringe away from his face. His hair is green, but the sparkling brown of his eyes perfectly matches the dark stained chestnut of the bartop. They must hire extra good-looking people to man the bar, Jack thinks. As a way to hook people. Get them to buy more drinks. Whatever. All things considered, it’s a good thing Jack’s not drinking, because it would definitely be working on him otherwise.

Rian apathetically looks up into Alex’s face. “Great,” he says in a monotone. “I’m doing really well, thanks for asking.” And he returns his head to his hands.

Jack presses his lips together so he doesn’t laugh. It would be cruel to laugh, but honestly, Rian’s in this position roughly every other month. At a certain point, Jack has to laugh. “His girlfriend broke up with him,” he tells the bartender. “Uh, again.”

The bartender winces as he turns to pour Rian’s drink. “Ah, that sucks. Hey, I’m sorry for your loss, man. Breakups are the worst.”

“It’s—” Jack lowers his voice and leans conspiratorially across the bar. “They’ll be back together within the week.”

The bartender’s lips pull into a half-smile. “Oh,” he whispers. “One of those.”

“Yeah.”

At the other end of the bar, someone calls, “Alex? Grab me an old-fashioned glass?”

“Yeah,” says the bartender — Alex, apparently, and he smiles at Jack, for real this time. “Gotta go do my job. I’m Alex if you need anything. Here’s your drink, man.” He slides Rian’s glass of whiskey across the bar into Rian’s waiting hand and then turns away to bring some glasses to the other bartender.

Jack watches him go. Then he turns to Rian.

“Okay,” he says resignedly, as Rian downs the drink in one and sets the glass back on the bar. “Walk me through it.”

Rian gets progressively more drunk as the night wears on. As usual, this makes him increasingly incoherent, not to mention clingy.

“One o’ these days,” he slurs into Jack’s ear, chin digging into Jack’s shoulder, “I’m. I’m gonna leave her first. B’fore she can leave me.”

“Yeah, good idea,” Jack says absently. His gazes wanders down the bartop to where the cute bartender, Alex, is closing someone’s tab, giving them a polite smile and a nod as they take their credit card back. Jack catches a glimpse of a tattoo sprawled over the back of his left hand. It looks like a rose, faded and red; Jack wonders what it means, if it means anything, or if Alex is the kind of guy to get tattoos just because they look cool.

“That’s stupid,” Rian mumbles. “She has her reasons. I’m sure I did something.”

“Oh my God, stop,” Jack says, zeroing back into Rian’s lament. “You didn’t do anything, Ri. She just doesn’t appreciate you. She keeps stringing you along and you keep letting her. You have to put your foot down or she’s gonna keep pushing you around like this. You know you deserve better, right?”

Rian hums. “I dunno.”

“Well, I do. And I’m telling you, you do.”

There’s a beat. “I’m gonna go to the bathroom,” Rian announces, clapping Jack on the back harder than strictly necessary. Jack grimaces. “Don’t drink my drink.”

“Your drink is empty.”

“Oh,” Rian says, peering into his glass. “Oh. It’s empty. Get me another drink then? Please?”

Jack sighs. “Yeah, fine.”

“That’s why I love you,” Rian professes, grabbing Jack’s face and giving him a messy kiss on the cheek. Jack sighs again as Rian traipses away, an adventure to locate the bathroom that will almost definitely end with him entering the girls’ bathroom by mistake.

Right on cue, cute bartender Alex sidles up. “Should I bother asking?”

“Another whiskey,” Jack says, passing Rian’s glass to Alex. “If you haven’t run out by now.”

Alex laughs. He’s got a nice laugh. It’s just Jack’s luck that the one time there’s a cute guy working the bar, Jack has to be taking care of his friend. Any other day, this cute bartender would be Jack’s evening plans, sorted.

“Sure you don’t want anything?” Alex asks as he pours Rian’s fourth whiskey. The amber drink pools nicely in the base of the glass. Jack starts to understand why this kind of drink is described as neat. “Non-alcoholic? Virgin cocktail, anything?”

“Do you serve shots of bleach?” Jack deadpans.

Alex snorts a laugh. “Damn, that bad?”

“No, it’s not that bad,” Jack says, pulling a hand through his hair. “It’s just, you know, I love him, and I— I hate his girlfriend, and I really just want them to never be together again, but I have tried a thousand times, said everything I can possibly think of to say, and nothing sticks. It’s like I’m talking to a brick wall. And I’m not just saying that because of the, like, muscles.”

“Been there,” Alex says, tilting his head to indicate the other bartender, who puts Rian’s build entirely to shame. “Zack doesn’t listen to me for almost any reason, but in fairness to him he’s a lot smarter than me.”

“Don’t get me wrong,” Jack says. “Rian’s way smarter than me. Except about this one thing.”

Alex grins. “Then he’s lucky to have you to take care of him,” he says lightly. “Hey, what’s your name?”

Jack blinks. “Jack.”

Alex nods like this confirms some suspicion. “Well, Jack, my shift is ending, and I know you have your hands full with your friend tonight, but if you ever want to come back without the, you know, angsty drama, I’d be happy to make you a real drink. On the house. You ever had an old-fashioned?”

Jack bites his lip. Idiotically, he says, “I’m not really a whiskey guy.”

“Yeah, neither am I, usually,” Alex says. “Is that a no?”

“No! I mean, no, it’s not a no. It’s a yes, just—” Jack shakes his head as Alex watches him, amused. “Jesus. Sorry. Yes, I would love to come back and for you to make me a drink. Even an old-fashioned. I’ll try anything once as long as it has alcohol in it.”

Alex smiles. “Good. I look forward to it.”

“Wait, let me just— do you have a pen?”

Alex ducks under the bar and surfaces with a black pen in hand. “Yes, apparently.”

Jack takes the pen, then grabs Alex’s right hand and scribbles his phone number on the back. “As long as we’re being old-fashioned,” he explains as he writes the last digit.

The smile on Alex’s face stretches wider, and Jack knows this had been a good move. “I’ll call.”

“I hope you will.”

“Good luck with your friend,” Alex says. “It’s nice to meet you, Jack.”

And then he’s gone, sneaking behind the other bartender, Zack, and disappearing into a room in the back.

Jack glances down at Rian’s glass of whiskey and the smile playing at his lips is impossible to stifle. Curious, he lifts the glass and takes a small sip.

Jack’s never really considered himself a whiskey guy, but as he swallows down this taste, he thinks he probably could be.
