Title: It’s You Fandom: Andi Mack Ship(s): Tyrus, Muffy (brief) Word Count: 3143 Summary: When Cyrus and TJ both get jealous over little, stupid things, they realize that maybe it was never about a swingset or a shirt. (Aka., the one where TJ gets jealous seeing Jonah in the shirt Cyrus had picked out for him, and they end up on a bench in front of a fire pit.)

“Calm down. You’re acting like we weren’t over at Andi’s house just yesterday,” Buffy teased. Cyrus was practically skipping beside on the sidewalk as they made their way towards Andi’s.

“Yes, but yesterday wasn’t the end of the school year party at her house,” Cyrus pointed out. “It was just the three of us. Jonah wasn’t there, or Marty.”

“Or TJ,” Buffy added, making Cyrus blush a little, though his smile only brightened.

“Him too,” Cyrus agreed, though his smile fell a little as he looked towards Andi’s house. “You don’t think he’ll invite Kira, do you?”

“I don’t think he’ll be hanging around Kira again any time soon,” Buffy said with all the confidence Cyrus had come to expect from his friends. Still, he had his doubts, and the expression on his face conveyed them perfectly, making Buffy sigh over dramatically as she grabbed his arm, tugging him along the sidewalk to Andi’s front door. “I mean it. I might’ve talked to TJ after the basketball game last week.”

“You did what?” Cyrus froze, eyes wide. “Why would you do that? I don’t want to come between him and Kira. You shouldn’t either. It’s fine. I’m happy for him, I mean it. You shouldn’t have said anything. What did you say? Why did you even say anyth—”

“Breathe,” Buffy cut him off sharply, shaking his shoulder a little as she finally got him to remember that he needed to stop talking long enough to take a breath. “All I told him was that Kira wasn’t a really nice person, and that it seemed like she was manipulating him. Keeping him from hanging out with you? That’s isolating him, and it’s not cool.”

As much as Cyrus didn’t want to see Kira, he also felt bad about possibly being the reason TJ lost a friend. Even if she wasn’t a very good friend, according to Buffy. But he dropped the subject when And opened the door, pulling them both into excited hugs.

It was still early for everyone else to arrive, so Cyrus set in helping Bex and Andi with the decorations. He had all but forgot about the conversation with Buffy by the time everyone else started arriving.

“Someone got dressed up,” Buffy teased when Jonah walked in.

“Hey, you liked the shirt,” Cyrus chimed in, offering a bright smile.

“Yeah, it’s great,” Jonah said, arms spread wide to show off the dark blue button-down Cyrus had given him at the free sale. “So what can I help with?”

“I think we just need to set out the food, and we’ll be good,” Buffy answered. Cyrus and Jonah followed her back to the kitchen, each loading their arms with plates from the fridge and counter to take out to set on the table.

People started streaming in before they’d even uncovered all of the food. Cyrus didn’t pay much attention to the newcomers until a familiar voice greeted him.

“Hey, Underdog,” TJ said as came over to join the small group by the food table. If Cyrus’s smile was a little brighter because TJ had shown up alone, he was pretty sure only Buffy noticed anyway.

“Teej, glad you could come,” Cyrus answered with a warm smile.

TJ looked around, smiling at Buffy and Jonah, before his smile faltered a little upon seeing the latter. Cyrus’s face fell a bit, and he caught Jonah’s eye. He looked just as confused as Cyrus felt, but TJ wasn’t saying anything. He had thought TJ and Jonah were okay, but now he was wondering if some other bizarre childhood memory was resurfacing.

“TJ? Something wrong?” Cyrus asked.

TJ seemed to snap out of whatever thoughts he was drowning in, offering a slightly forced smile to Cyrus before looking back at Jonah. “No, of course not. Nice shirt, by the way,” he added in a deadpan tone. Cyrus looked between the two for a moment before TJ's words registered; he had sent a picture of that shirt to TJ before he ended up giving it to Jonah.

“Hey, TJ—“

“Are these chocolate?” TJ cut him off, reaching for one of the cupcakes Buffy had set on the table. “I’m gonna see if I can find something to drink.” Cyrus didn’t miss the way he walked right past the end of the table where plastic cups and a large punch bowl were set out, alongside a cooler of sodas.

“What was that about?” Jonah asked quietly.

Cyrus didn’t answer, just looking from TJ’s retreating form over to Buffy. Her eyes widened and she jerked her head none-too-subtly towards TJ in an obvious signal for Cyrus to follow him. Cyrus shrugged weakly and shook his head a bit, continuing the silent conversation with the point that it wouldn’t make a difference, why would TJ want to talk to Cyrus anyway? Buffy rolled her eyes in response, reaching over the table to smack him sharply on the shoulder.

“Ow,” Cyrus broke the silence, rubbing his shoulder before he finally gave in and followed TJ, ignoring Jonah’s increasingly confused stare.

When he caught up with TJ, he was outside, alone on the bench by the fire pit, the forgotten cupcake sitting on the arm of the bench. “Hey,” Cyrus said gently as he walked over. “Mind if I sit here?” He asked, gesturing to the bench beside TJ. The boy only shrugged. “Are you mad about the shirt?” Cyrus finally asked after he couldn't take the silence anymore.

“Why would I be?” TJ asked. “It’s just a stupid shirt.”

“Yeah, and it was just a stupid swingset,” Cyrus muttered under his breath. He didn’t really intend for TJ to hear him, but the boy looked up and turned to stare at him.

“What?”

“Nothing,” Cyrus said quickly, looking away towards the dancing fire instead of at TJ. He really didn’t have any reason to get jealous over seeing TJ and Kira on the swings. They didn’t own the swings.

TJ fell silent for a moment before he spoke again, softer this time. “You did come out to the park?” It sounded like he meant it to be an observation, but it came out as a question. Cyrus only nodded. “We went there cause Kira said she wanted to feed the ducks. Then she wanted to swing and just—“

“You don’t owe me an explanation,” Cyrus cut him off.

“It feels like I do,” TJ said. The sadness in his voice made Cyrus want to do something stupid, like apologize a thousand times for ever making him feel that way, and promising never to again. Or hug him. Or something else equally as stupid.

“Well, you don’t,” Cyrus said with a shrug. “You should’ve invited her to the party.” The words made him feel sick to say, but if being with Kira made TJ happy, then that was all he wanted anyway.

“I didn’t want to,” TJ said quickly. “I don’t like Kira.”

“It seems like you do,” Cyrus said. He looked back towards TJ, giving his best impression of a comforting and encouraging smile, even while he wanted to cry. He was really good at it, actually. He could always fool And, and usually Buffy too. But TJ’s face fell, and Cyrus hated that he couldn’t fool TJ too. He couldn’t even pretend to be happy to make TJ happy. He was a terribly friend. “It’s okay that you like her. You’re allowed to like someone, and to spend time with her. I mean it, I’m happy for you.”

“I don’t like Kira,” TJ repeated. He shifted this time though, a bit uncomfortably, his eyes not quite meeting Cyrus’s. He propped one leg up on the bench between them, turning a little so he could face Cyrus better. For his part, Cyrus was trying not to look him in the eyes. Maybe if he didn’t look straight at TJ, it would be easier to get him to believe in Cyrus’s fake happiness for him.

That turned out to be a mistake though, when TJ rested his arm against his leg, his fingers dangling a bit, barely brushing over the back of Cyrus’s hand. Cyrus couldn’t breathe. It could've been a mistake, but TJ wasn’t moving away, and when Cyrus chanced a glance up, TJ’s gaze was set on their hands as well.

“I don’t like Kira,” TJ said, his voice shaking a little the third time he repeated it.

“You already said that,” Cyrus pointed out, though his voice was quiet, as though worried that if he spoke too loudly, he’d break whatever moment was happening. Or felt like should be happening.

“Yeah,” TJ breathed. He fell silent for a moment before his hand twitched a bit, fingers brushing against Cyrus’s hand again. His words were slow and careful, as if he was processing each one before he spoke it into existence. “Actually, I don’t like any girls.”

Out of all the moments Cyrus had dreamed of TJ saying something like that to him, of all the times he wished that maybe, just maybe, he had the slightest chance with the basketball player, he always had something to say. In all of those dream scenarios, he had the perfect words. Comforting, supportive, friendly, maybe more than friendly, but always perfect. Always the exact poetic words that TJ would need to hear to know that Cyrus supported him, thought he was brave for coming out, and trusted him.

Cyrus said none of them.

“Oh, ok.” Those were the only words Cyrus could form. The words didn’t sound happy, or supportive, or anything positive at all. Just neutral. Just, there. Cyrus felt like his brain was misfiring, trying to piece together something to say, but he couldn’t come up with anything. The only words running through his head were TJ’s. He didn’t like girls. Or maybe he just didn’t like any girls at the moment. That didn’t mean he was gay, right? Or maybe it did. Maybe that, and the fact that he still hadn’t moved, that his fingertips were still barely resting against the back of Cyrus’s hand meant that he was gay. That he liked Cyrus? No, that wasn’t possible.

Except that, for the first time since he’d started to realize his feelings for his friend, Cyrus thought that maybe it was possible.

“Is there anything you want to tell me?” TJ’s voice broke the silence, and Cyrus’s eyes flicked up to meet his, uncertainty and hope warring inside his mind. He knew better than to let hope win that battle, but still. It was a close fight.

Too close, actually. As he ran through possible ways to answer that question—of just telling TJ that he didn’t like any girls either, or just that he was proud of TJ for telling him—some part of him overrode every logical thought in his brain. He let hope win.

“Yeah, there is,” Cyrus said quietly, eyes dropping down to their hands again. He didn’t turn his hand over to glass at TJ’s—he wasn’t feeling that brave—but he did raise his thumb a little from the bench, enough to brush over Tj’s fingers. He forced himself to look back up at TJ before he spoke again, knowing that he needed to look him in the eyes for this, as terrifying as it was.

“I like you,” Cyrus said, his voice quiet, yet more confident than he expected.

TJ’s answering smile was all Cyrus needed to be able to breathe again. Bright and genuine, and just for him. “That’s good,” TJ said, his tone something closer to his normal teasing.

“That’s good?” Cyrus asked with an amused smile. Some part of him wanted to laugh, but another part wanted to scream. That’s good? What did that mean?

“Yeah,” TJ said simply. Cyrus’s breath caught in his throat when TJ’s hand dropped down to cover his completely. He still didn’t move to lace their fingers together, afraid that if he moved the slightest bit, this was all going to go away, as irrational as that sounded even in his head. “Because if that was just one-sided, our friendship was about to get a little awkward,” TJ added, making Cyrus’s eyes snap up from their hands.

He hadn’t just heard that, had he? Except the proof was there. TJ was smiling at him, telling him that he liked him, holding his hand.

“You like me too?” Cyrus asked, confusion written all over his features, even as a small, hopeful smile started to stretch across his lips, barely daring to exist until he knew it was true.

“Of course,” TJ said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. As though he were explaining that the sky was blue, or that he was better than Buffy at basketball. Even if the latter wasn’t true, TJ still believed it, and said it as though it were fact. “Why do you sound so surprised?” TJ asked with a short laugh.

“Because,” Cyrus gestured with his free hand vaguely towards himself. Towards his own awkwardness and his not-as-impressive-as-Jonah-ness. “It’s me,” he said, with as much certainty in the obviousness of his statement as TJ had been. He was a mess. He was never anyone’s first choice, so why would he be TJ’s? Of all people, star basketball player, redeemed school bully, amazing friend, why would he like Cyrus?

TJ’s smile only softened though. His voice dropped, and his eyes—Cyrus couldn’t find words to describe the look in his eyes.

“Yeah, it’s you.”

Words could not make a person melt. It was physically and scientifically impossible. And yet, here Cyrus was, feeling his chest expand and melt at the sound of those words. Those perfect, sweet, warm words, that TJ spoke with so much sincerity that for a moment, Cyrus believed him.

TJ might just be dangerous for him in that way, but he couldn’t bring himself to be upset about it. Not with TJ looking at him like he was something to be treasured, cared for and protected. Like he was important.

He knew he had to say something equally as perfect and beautiful back, but he couldn’t think of anything expect how much he wanted to latch onto TJ and never let go. Thankfully, or maybe not so thankfully—Cyrus wasn’t sure yet—he was saved the trouble of coming up with something to say when TJ broke eye contact with him, his smile turning to something more friendly as he raised his free hand to wave at someone over Cyrus’s shoulder.

Cyrus whipped around in time to see a blur of dark hair ducking away from the screen door. He groaned, turning back around to TJ, who was chuckling a little at their eavesdropper. Without thinking, Cyrus leaned forward, his forehead bumping against TJ’s chest and just staying there. He felt TJ’s and leave his, and almost said something, but then it came to rest against his back, and that was acceptable.

“Andi?” Cyrus questioned.

“And Buffy. She was just faster than Andi,” TJ answered, amusement clear in his tone. TJ’s hands rubbed up and down Cyrus’s back for a moment, and he could happily stay there for the rest of the night, avoiding the party and his friends in favor of just staying there with TJ.

TJ didn’t seem to be in much hurry to leave either, but eventually Cyrus pulled his head up from TJ’s chest, looking up at the boy with a small, hopeful smile. “We should probably go inside before they decide to come out here and drag us back in,” Cyrus said, though he knew his friends wouldn’t do that. They might try to sneak a peek through the door again, and would absolutely hound him as soon as they went inside, but weirdly enough, he kinda of looked forward to that. He wanted Buffy to ask him what was said, and what happened. Because he wanted to tell her.

“Okay,” TJ agreed easily, taking Cyrus’s hand as he stood. He interlaced their fingers together as though it were just a common, everyday occurrence, nothing out of the ordinary, even as Cyrus bit his lip in an effort to not make some embarrassingly high pitched sound of excitement.

As expected, And and Buffy were just inside the door, pretending they hadn’t just been trying to spy on Cyrus and TJ. Cyrus didn’t even have it in him at the moment to fake-glare at them for it. He was ecstatic, and no amount of meddling friends was going to ruin that. Not when he had TJ’s hand in his, and a warm smile directed at him every time he caught TJ’s eye.

“About time,” Buffy said, not bothering to hide the knowing smirk on her lips. She never tried to hide when she thought she knew something before everyone else did, even this. Just as she said that though, Marty came up behind her, handing her a drink before resting his arm around her shoulders without a word.

“I could say the same to you,” Cyrus returned easily, earning a laugh from Andi, and a simple shrug from Buffy, a silent admittance that she wouldn’t deny his words.

“Hey, Lady Macbeth,” TJ said brightly. Marty groaned, but everyone else just stared at TJ like he’d lost his mind, including Cyrus. Great. He finally found an amazing guy that actually liked him, and said guy lost his mind exactly .5 seconds later.

“Sorry, Lady Macbeth?” Cyrus questioned.

Marty drew his attention by waving a hand vaguely in the air between them. “Me. He’s talking about me,” he said with a defeated sigh. “We had to read Macbeth in our English class earlier in the year, and no girls wanted to volunteer to read outloud, so I read the part of Lady Macbeth.”

“I thought you said you didn’t know Marty,” Buffy pointed out, looking back at TJ with raised eyebrows.

“Oh, wait. This is Marty from the party?” TJ asked, no hint of irony of joking in his tone. He honestly didn’t know Marty’s name, despite having a ridiculous nickname for the guy. Buffy and Andi found it hilarious, while Cyrus just groaned, turning to bury his face against TJ’s shoulder.

This was the guy he picked.

Even as the thought occurred to him in annoyance though, it pulled a smile from Cyrus’s lips as he drew back to watch the teasing now going back and forth between TJ and Marty. Because as much as TJ was annoying and oblivious sometimes, he was sweet and thoughtful. He made Cyrus feel important, and pushed him out of his comfort zone, while always being right beside him the whole time, encouraging and offering support.

Yeah. This was the guy he picked.

i feel like so much discourse becomes exacerbated because people are using certain weapons at the wrong battles. like, saying “a gay relationship should be considered valid and canon within the story’s narrative without there needing to be an explicit love confession or sexual situation” is one thing, but people take the sentiment of that idea and take it to “it’s fine if gays never kiss on-screen at all because it’s just enough” and that’s just... simply not what the first statement is saying.

the easiest way to explain this is to just use media oriented at children and teens. it’s SO easy to tell when a cishet character has a crush on another character there. children get it. children learn to get it. it might sound silly, but watching media made especially for them actually teaches kids media literacy. like, you learn the basic tropes before you learn something more complicated, and the same extends to relationships between characters. you learn to tell when a character is simply a friend with someone and when they are interested in something more. obviously, at some point kids might even start having opinions on what relationships should be in the story’s canon - we all have probably had some kind of shipping opinions before we even knew what that was!

andi mack is a great example, not only because it featured disney channel’s first openly gay character (and in this case a character who actually used the word gay, though there was another character on the lodge uk who said he’s not into girls or something like that), but because i actually have my own story of, for the lack of a better word, perception of the story.

the first episode of andi mack was released months prior to the season actually starting. in it, cyrus goodman joins his best friend andi mack in fawning over jonah beck. when i saw it happen, i was surprised, thinking “oh, that’s gay. that’s... that’s gay, right? like, this has gotta be gay. unless it’s a joke. but it’s a kids’ show, right? but he’s literally sighing about a different boy. maybe it’s some kind of hero worship, i shall see.” that was basically the thought process i went through, but i still more or less strongly believed that it had to have been meant as him expressing some attraction. not that many episodes later, cyrus comes out to his friend buffy and then to andi about actually having a crush on jonah. later, he would come out to jonah himself, using the word gay. at some point, he meets another boy, tj, who had some other plot going on with buffy. tj and cyrus quickly become close, and obviously quite a few people start shipping them. (i have to note that i was a cyrus/jonah fan for the longest time before jumping ship - ha! - but i was pretty sold on tyrus when tj.... looked back. it’s a whole thing.) the show ends with them sitting together and holding hands. it’s a whole moment. obviously, the straight couples get to have their kisses, but honestly i thought it was a fight lost war won situation.

what i mean to say... i want the general audience to know what the fuck is up. i want the fact that dean’s siren was a guy to have been the moment everyone knew, without a question, that he likes men. i want cas’s devotion to dean to have been widely regarded as romantic throughout the show, not just retroactively from the confession. and yeah, still for them to confess their feelings and kiss!!! and be together!!!! in every way!!!

i want it to be easy. like a kid could get it.

Doafp 1x10 Review

Two Party System was a nice end to a stellar season though one story line didn’t quite stick the landing. Let’s dig in!

All is well once more with Elena and Sasha and Jessica. Great to see them open up to each other and for Elena to put sisters before misters. We’re really starting to see Elena become a leader and I loved the ending line of ‘’diary we’re just getting started’’. I do hope if there’s a S2 that we start seeing more of a direct line between Elena’s middle school life and her eventually becoming president because as of now the flashforwards to her as president 25+ years later seem gimmicky

Sabi are hetero goals again. It’s been a very nice surprise to see how much they’ve focused on some pretty adult topics with Gabi and Sam. It’s hard for kids shows to pull off and I commend them for it; it reminds me of some of the focus we saw on Bex and Celia’s relationships and their pretty heavy issues in AM S1 and 2a. This was certainly the right time for them to put all of their cards on the table with Gabi realizing that Bobby is starting to see Sam as a father figure. I’m very curious to see where they go with Sabi in future seasons, if they’re renewed

Bobby’s story line took one step forward and two steps back tonight. Bobby reconciling with Liam and coming to grips with his sexuality in front of the mirror was a nice way to end his arc this season; it was also a retreat back into subtext from the more explicit ways they’ve touched on Bobby’s sexuality in eps 8 & 9. And the way Bobby’s conflict with Liam was wrapped up is noticeably different from how Elena’s conflicts with Sasha and Jessica and Gabi’s conflict with Sam.

Bobby and Liam made up by not actually discussing anything which sadly reminds me of what happened with Tyrus on AM after costume day. So many people after that ep aired said that Tyrus couldn’t reconcile and get together unless they talked things out, but of course they never did and they reconciled like nothing had ever happened and then had an underwhelming ending that could have happened without all the poorly written angst and drama. Now I don’t think the Bobby and Liam conflict will end up being all that important in the long run if the show is renewed because I don’t think Liam is Bobby’s love interest and if the show gets renewed then the writers have plenty of time to learn from this mistake but it’s more the fact that they made this mistake. If a show can’t pay off a story line then they shouldn’t do it; the writers had no excuse. They never would have Gabi tell Sam that she was just stressed because of work and then have everything go back to normal after their breakup in ep 8 because that would have been absurd. Having Bobby and Liam get in a brawl is great drama but set up becomes meaningless without payoff. It’s not a great sign that the Doafp writers are already making mistakes that it took the AM writers until almost the end of that show to make

I had flagged Cami explicitly stating the reason why Bobby fought Liam in my ep 9 review as potential set up for them not having Bobby tell Liam about his feelings which isn’t so surprising as we’ve literally never had a boy confess his feelings to another boy on a Disney show before. Since S2 if it happens will open on the start of the next school year it’s very unlikely that they’ll ever touch on the fight again which is for the best if Bobby is going to end up with someone else; just like how on AM it was for the best that Cyrus never told Jonah about his old crush on him. Again I really hope that the writers make a plan for how to give Bobby the best possible plot in the face of Disney censorship. The best case scenario for the show is that they get 3-4 seasons total which would mean they have 20-30 odd eps to explore whatever it is they want to explore with all the characters. They just won’t have the time to drag things out like they did on AM, the 23 ep gap between Cyrus coming out to Andi and coming out to Jonah is likely more eps then Doafp has left for example. On Andi Mack the rule was that there couldn’t be anymore than 2 coming outs per season but their seasons were also 20+ eps so who knows if the Doafp writers can swing that in 10 ep seasons. All coming outs also had to be one on one coming outs but if they let Bobby come out to his family all at once then that would probably make things easier for the writers

Brandon Severs Jr really needs to stop with the Cartero hyping. It’s great that he ships cartero but there’s no evidence that he’s been told to act like Liam likes Bobby back in sharp contrast to how it was clear from the start that TJ liked Cyrus back because Luke had been told that TJ was gay. At least Josh and Luke and Terri and the other cast and crew who hyped up Tyrus to varying degrees were actually hyping up a ship that did end up canoning; what got them in trouble was hyping up the ship too much without knowing until the end whether it was actually going to be allowed to canon and lying about Disney censorship. What’s Brandon going to do when they eventually introduce a love interest for Bobby?

I like the development of the classmates like Claude and Ryan and Belinda and Joey and the Brits. They feel like real people in a way that background class mates rarely do on TV shows. It will serve the show well if they get renewed

The show has had great continuity so far, like with Ryan telling Elena that his mom and Claude’s mom are friends which is something Claude had mentioned earlier in the season. But I didn’t like that they blew up the timeline so that not only is spring break over in ep 9 but ep 10 which ends only a few days later is also the end of the school year. Timeline issues in and of themselves are not necessarily serious but they’re usually a warning sign that things are going wrong in the writers room. The GMW timeline never made much sense but it ended up becoming a total shitshow once that show got really bad and the AM timeline only started to get messy in 2b when the show’s writing started to get bad

Looking Ahead:

Doafp has really turned out to be a delightful surprise and I can only hope that it gets renewed though with the corona virus sweeping the world any announcement and any future production won’t be for a while most likely

With Sasha having a thing for Claude and Joey seemingly interested in Elena I think S2 will likely see a bigger focus on Elena and her friends and boys. It would be nice to see Joey’s bar mitzvah in S2 though I doubt they can top Cyrus’ bash mitzvah

I hope they introduce a love interest for Bobby in High School and that the censorship isn’t too bad but we shall see

If the show is cancelled and this ends up being the final review then thanks for reading and if we get more seasons I’ll see you back here one day

How (i think) 318 will play out

Kira is not going to out Cyrus or TJ to the whole school.. Josh basically confirmed she has a redemption arc and by the PR pics released it looks like Buffy is smiling at her in 318 (production 19) so she’s probably redeemed in that episode (which is also her next episode back). There’s no way Terri or any of the writers would agree one of the boys getting outed would be a good storyline for the final few episodes.

In my best idea of prediction I think Kira will help Buffy with the girl’s basketball team due to her being injured. TJ orchestrates this somehow requiring the stolen golf cart so by the end of the episode, Kira and Buffy get along and the team wins the game.

TJ is in student court being defended by Cyrus, Cyrus gets him out of suspension most likely still with detention, but TJ is happy Cyrus could and was willing to do that much for him. Right after this, they run over to the girls’ game where they see Buffy on the sidelines coaching and Kira playing well with all the other girls. They win and everyone is excited, running up to Buffy. They all see Kira and she apologises to Buffy and says she was right about working as a team, yay everyone is happy.

To preface: Cyrus knows how he feels about someone by his heartbeat freaking out, this is canon. Cyrus does NOT know what the lookback means. He looked back at Jonah but only realised he liked him by the way his heart sped up (and later didn’t when he hugged Jonah). TJ looked back at him but he still has no idea TJ likes him.

We can conclude that TJ and Cyrus ran from the trial to the game, since they’re both in the same outfits.

At the game, Cyrus has put on a red jacket, but he still holds the suit jacket in his arms.

They’re obviously happy for the win, but we also have this clip which is likely AFTER everyone has congratulated the team

Where they don’t look so happy anymore. I’ve seen a lot of theories for this, they’re looking at a phone or a text from Kira or something, but we are PRETTY sure Kira is there and this is her redemption arc, so i dont think this is the problem.

It was hard to grab but most people have seen the clip and we know Cyrus and TJ look up at each other before Cyrus backs away. This theory I first saw from tjstyrus on twitter and I’m willing to bet its as close to accurate as can be: Cyrus drops the suit jacket on the floor in the excitement, TJ and Cyrus both go down to pick it up at the same time and their hands touch. This is when Cyrus feels his heart beat louder and speed up and he realises he’s whipped.

I think he backs away cos he’s kinda freaked out that he actually has a crush on TJ and he thinks TJ and Kira like each other and he’s worried of ruining his friendship with TJ through this, like a mini panic i think, which is why he looks so distraught.

I don’t think this could be something bad TJ or Kira have done to further upset Cyrus, due to the fact that TJ and Kira are only in the last episode after this, and that episode is packed with Bexie, Andi, Amber, Jonah, and Muffy plots as well. Raquel was also only on set one day so its fair to say she comes to the party to further instill she and Buffy are now friends, and that’s it. Her redemption has to happen here, imo.

So Cyrus is just gay panicking about liking TJ and runs off, leaving TJ a little confused, but maybe able to piece a few things together, and willing to approach him at the bench at Andi’s party (with some secret: I don’t like Kira like that, I don’t.. like any girl like that) to ask if there’s anything he needs to tell him.

TLDR T*ra/Tyrus plot predictions for 318; Kira redeems herself, she doesn’t out anyone. Cyrus finally realises he has feelings for TJ when their hands touch and he feels his heart speed up and panics and runs, leaving TJ confused but able to sort out his feelings as well, all leading to the bench scene.

Big Takeaways From the New Texts:

- Apparently Cyrus doesn’t consider his breakup with Iris to be a real breakup, and he clearly doesn’t think he has a chance with TJ, so he’s fantasizing about dating some random dude and having his first real breakup. Because he’s already anticipating the way some non-TJ dude wouldn’t work out for him.

- Either he’s already spoken openly about his crush to Andi in the past without us knowing about it, or Cyrus just knew Andi already knew without being told -- because all of that wording about TJ was 100% confirmation of the crush being an established fact between them. (It’ll be interesting to see how consistent the main canon is about that when it comes time for Cyrus to talk to Buffy and Andi about it on the show.)

- He used the word “love” in reference to his feelings staying unrequited, and even though he said it in a sassy joking context, that’s very telling. He’s covering up how deep his feelings run and how much he’s hurting with humor. Classic Cyrus.

I JUST WATCHED THE FINALE AND OH MY GOSH MY HEAD IS SPINNING I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS

I’ll give you my quick thoughts and then jump into Muffy because you already KNOW I am saving a whole section for them

Celia’s growth was amazing. I love that she went from being strict to being so carefree and trusting of Bex

Bex in that wedding dress 👏🏻 Bowie in that Tux 👌🏻 like they didn’t have to do that but they did 😭

The slow dance was SO CUTE OMG

I loved that all of them sang lady Gaga- the song was perfect for them but sad Garren wasn’t on stage with Sofia

However, they showed the ships singing together and whenever they showed Buffy they showed Marty so I was like 😩😭👏🏻 ya know

TJ playing the piano was all I could have asked for

I LOVED the scene when Cyrus and Buffy talked about “relationship woes” like wow. 😭😍 that hurt because the parrallels were so blatantly obvious but Terri made sure to take EQUAL time to explain their woes with each character.

Also WTF KIRA STOP TOUCHING TJ AND PUTTING YOUR ARM ON HIM. This has been my PSA

I LOVED watching TJ just RIP into Kira. Boi 👏🏻 told 👏🏻 her 👏🏻 off. He literally called her out for bullying and asked her to stop (likkkeeee not only was it great bc he was protective boyfriend mode™️ but because he showed growth. He defended Cyrus for something he used to do). It was great and a no Kira redemption was the best way they could have done that and it was was beautiful. 💯

I loved that Jandi scene! I have said I am actually ok with Jandi, but they needed more maturity. Andi needed to find herself and Jonah needed to be ready for a relationship. In time and when Andi can handle conflict, I think they would make a good pairing. But WITH TIME, like they said. Until then, Jonah has the cute bracelet. I think that was such a valuable lesson for kids to not rush something, just because you like someone. Make sure you are actually ready because crushes aren’t all just about endgames (which will sound hypocritical considering what I write next lol) but that they are a LOT of work and you have to have your head on correct to make sure you can handle it. Just *chef’s kiss*

I know Muffy was around this time (sorry my thoughts are so scattered- I am writing this post watching it so not everything is in a congruent timeline) but I am going to come back to them like I said earlier. They have a special reserved™️ section in this post 😍👏🏻

I laughed so hard at TJ’s name but gave all my uwu’s I had left post Muffy (which weren’t many but I reserved some for Tyrus) to that cute little line from Cyrus about how he liked his name 😭

I thought the scene was handled well considering their limits and tried to keep my expectations low, but TBH I was pretty bummed they didn’t actually say the words that they liked each other. I wish there was more dialogue than vague questions ya know? Oh well 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was also really REALLY hoping for some canon Muffy and Tyrus scenes at the party and kept checking the time stamp during the last scene hoping they would show SOMETHING but they didn’t say anything. Even just a quick “Hey I’m dating this person now and I love them all my uwu’s” would have been fine but it was like that was completely forgotten

However I’ve seen a few Tumblr posts about someone working on making fic text posts with the GHC talking about their canon ships so I’ll take what I can get :)

The Andi Shack and Andi getting into SAVA didn’t surprise me, but it was sweet

I really liked the whole side by side photo thing they did

What did surprise me was Jonah saying he loved Andi 😭 like that was such a sweet sentiment and I was just like, “Alexa play I Cried by Jonah Beck” you know?

Kinda also dissapointed we heard nothing more about Jonah’s panic attack’s, the hole in the wall, and possible Kippen Siblings

REALLY REALLY want an Andi Mack movie- they made a Lizzie McGuire one after only two seasons so they could with AM to address any plot holes (BUT IF THEY DO IT THEY BETTER HAVE CANON MUFFY AND TYRUS JOIN SO HELP ME BC MIRANDA WAS GONE IN TLMM AND I WAS READY TO SHOW HANDS)

Also other side note: I got kinda frustrated with all of the dancing/singing scenes. Like they were cute but also felt like a lot of wasted screen time (much like 3x19 or the Jonah/Cyrus camping scenes) when other plots could have been addressed

And no speaking lines for Amber? At all? Like...? Even with the Jonah stuff? Or redemption paralleling TJ. IDK seemed a lil wack to me

Muffy:

Again, Alexa play “I Cried” by Jonah Beck BECAUSE OH MY GOSH THEY WERE MY EVERYTHING

Surprisingly didn’t cry as much as 3x14 but I think that’s because I was shaking so bad (seriously I looked like I just went through a terrifying haunted house and stayed overnight in it, my hand trembling so much)

I rewatched the scenes WHICH ONLY MADE IT WORSE BECAUSE I CRIED MORE

I enjoyed writing my fics, but really really liked the way Terri handled this

I loved all of their scenes dancing together and it was funny because after Cyrus and Buffy talked, Buffy was like, “he doesn’t like me” but then Marty spent the ENTIRE night like RIGHT NEXT TO BUFFY. Not with the other girl. Literally physical space is not a real thing with them. Watch when they dance, or when they see CeCe in the Dino costume or any other time, Buffy and Marty are ONLY next to each other and Marty even moves closer to Buffy when they are all huddled around CeCe if you watch closely enough

I tried to post something on here and like two people liked it. I LIKED THEM WHEN BASICALLY NO ONE ELSE DID AND SO I FEEL LIKE I AM ONE OF THE MOST DESERVING OF THIS SHIP BEING ENDGAME AND NO ONE CAN FIGHT ME ON THIS JUST LET ME LOVE THEM

And then they walked away together with their arms around each other 😭 If you watch closely Buffy kinda tucks her head into his arm and I’ve seen fics of them doing this so it made me heart 💗💓💓 when they actually did

Please Terri Minksy, I beg of you, if you don’t get a S4 make a movie but it is REQUIRED BY LAW that Muffy and Tyrus are in the ENTIRE movie- being canon and cute. They don’t even need angst but I still want scenes with them together just being in love.

My fav part of the Tyrus storyline was definitely during the whole Cyrus/TJ/Kira angst. For one thing, I love angst... and for the first time ever we see jealous Cyrus, pining from afar, and it is portrayed in a textual way instead of the usual subtext. We saw how hurt he was seeing TJ and Kira on the swings together because that’s “their thing” (it was a nice touch to give Tyrus 2 positive swing scenes and then the 3rd one being angsty). Like even the casual audience would had to have picked up on that. It was also a clear sign that they were definitely building on canon Tyrus because now the audience knows for certain that Cyrus Goodman had a crush on TJ Kippen, and that there was a reason Cyrus lost his interest in Jonah; it is because he fell for TJ.

(I also wanna note that Cyrus wanted to give the shirt he picked out for TJ to Jonah sounded like he was a second choice. Like if he can’t give it to his current crush, why not give it to his former crush? At least, that’s the vibe I got when Buffy was like “seriously?!” and Cyrus responding with “he has nice eyes, too” and Jonah asking him if he was sure and Cyrus responding back with “I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life” because it reminded me of that one Jandi scene where Andi throws the bracelet away because she didn’t want it laying around reminding her that Jonah didn’t want it; the shirt is the bracelet in this scenario)

When Cyrus said, “I was probably deluding myself anyway” that was actual textual dialogue because his crush on Jonah was different from TJ. Cyrus knew he never had a chance with Jonah, but with TJ... he thought TJ was feeling the same things he was feeling and actually had a chance, and seeing him with Kira made him doubt his relationship with TJ (another nice touch to parallel it to the Muffy scene prior)

That being said, Cyrus was very patient with TJ. He never forced anything upon him or made him choose between him and Kira. Cyrus was out, to himself, and to his 3 closest friends but we, as an audience did not have canon dialogue that TJ was gay as well, so Cyrus never pursued TJ because he was unsure how he felt, which is why it was so much more powerful for TJ to initiate holding Cyrus’ hand and taking a leap of faith. Cyrus knew how he felt but we saw TJ struggling with internalized homophobia for a hot second there. However, Kira forcing TJ to choose between her and Cyrus was very eye-opening for him because he knew in that moment that it is definitely Cyrus who he wants to be with and he wasn’t going to hide from it anymore.

UK Media says Gay Teen Couple is Groundbreaking

The season finale of Andi Mack debuted on Disney Channel UK on Friday, August 2, one week after the US.

Disney Channel has made history by featuring their first gay teen couple in the final episode of Andi Mack.

We can’t deal.

The final episode of the beloved show saw 13-year-old Cyrus Goodman confessing his feelings for his classmate TJ Kippen, before the pair held hands and melted everyone’s hearts.

“Is there anything else you want to tell me?” Cyrus asks, before TJ says “Yeah,” and repeats the question back.

“Yes,” Cyrus says, with TJ taking his beau’s hand as the camera pans away from the romantic fire-lit scene.

We’re emotional.

Plus, the couple were seen to belt out Lady Gaga’s Born This Way before the emotional scene. Could it get any more perfect?

The stars were thrilled seeing the episode air, with Joshua Rush (Cyrus) tweeting: “Guys, gals, and nb pals, i can now tell you: tyrus endgame canon and confirmed.”

Luke Mullen (TJ) added: “Honored to be apart of such a groundbreaking show. I hope my character can inspire people to proud of who they are and love who they love. #AndiMack #tyrusisendgame.”

Meanwhile, fans were just as hyped, with one writing: “These two just became disney channels first openly gay couple, this scene is going to be so important for so many kids growing up watching this right now. they’ll get to look back at this and think, this show let me know that i would be okay.”

Another added: “This show has paved the way for the lbgtq [community] on Disney and has made history Andi Mack remains surperior.”

“I know it might seem silly that at 21 I’m freaking out over a Disney show, but this show was life changing,” one more emotional viewer pointed out.

Disney Channel announced they’d be featuring their first gay storyline back in 2017, telling Entertainment Weekly: “The Disney brand has always been inclusive, with stories that reflect acceptance and tolerance and celebrate the differences that make our characters uniquely wonderful in their own way.”

In the show, Cyrus was originally seen to have a crush on Jonah Beck, played by Asher Angel, who is the same boy Andi Mack fancies, before having his happy ending with TJ.

Andi Mack stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee as the main character, alongside Asher Angel, Lilan Bowden, Joshua Rush and Lauren Tom.

Disney previously featured their first same-sex kiss on animated series Star vs. the Forces Of Evil, which is broadcast on Disney XD.

Listen, I got so caught up in Tyrus Week, spending hours and hours going through tags and liking posts and queuing reblogs, that I pretty much pushed everything else to the side. (Plus I’ve also been working on the next thing I’ll tell you guys about in the next few days.)

All that is to say, I got a lot of stuff in my inbox this last week, so I’m just going to tackle a bunch of them in... A LIGHTNING ROUND.

Would’ve been a strange choice for Terri Minsky to turn the finale of Andi Mack into a murder mystery, but if that’s what she wanted, I’d trust her.

Yeah, I went back and checked and Jonah only says in 3x12 that his dad made a bad investment, not lost a job or anything.

It really seems like he’s been managing the Judy Bartholomew fortune all these years. We don’t know anything else of him other than he was once a background workout video guy and he has at least enough knowledge about baseball to coach little league.

Hopefully the new job is providing him with a solid salary, but if not, I think the world is ready for a Judy Bartholomew comeback.

...who hears the beginning of “Born This Way” and reacts like it’s ruined his evening. I mean, I was a little tired of it, too, when it was being played on the radio over and over and over, but it’s been some years. It’s not overplayed as much anymore and it definitely wouldn’t make me this upset. (He pops up later in the song and is happily dancing, so maybe he thought it was the beginning of a different song?)

Then there’s this girl...

...who is feeling it. She’s like, hell yeah, this is my jam!

And there’s this girl in the goggles...

...who, after TJ and Cyrus sing the “be myself, respect my youth” part, is like, okayyyy. I see you.

Here’s a fun(?) behind-the-scenes thing for this blog. A few months back, I was thinking about ways to replace “Moments” if we had, by some miracle, gotten a season four, since I would’ve run out of moments weeks after the finale. What I came up with was “The Random Andi Mack Extra of the Day.” It would’ve just been screenshots of random extras throughout the show’s run. Upon some reflection, this was a bad idea.

The first problem here is that I get the feeling those posts would’ve gotten, at most, 20-30 notes each, because no one really cares about random, out of context extras and it doesn’t seem like a thing people would want to reblog.

The second problem is, knowing myself, I probably would’ve spent hundreds of hours during the hiatus between s3 and s4 making 1000 of them in the first place, just so I could have them ready to go. I would’ve absolutely done this without testing the waters first to see if there was any interest. (Just like with the “Moments.” I made like 300 of them before I made the first post about them.)

So, the most likely scenario was going to be me, two weeks into “The RAMEotD,” looking at flopping posts, then looking at my folder of 800 screenshots of Andi Mack extras and going, “Well, what am I going to do, not post them? I already did all the work!” And I would keeping queuing them up, and they would keep appearing on this blog every day, and they would taunt me with their 22 notes. You remember the work you did? IT WAS FOR BUT A PITTANCE!

So I guess what I’m saying is maybe it’s for the best. The cancellation saves me from myself.

Hey, though, heads up. If and when you go back and watch the series again, pay attention to the extras -- the unsung heroes of the entertainment industry. There are some extras reallllly putting in work on this show. It absolutely adds to the delightful quality of Andi Mack. Every time I would spot someone in the background being goofy or really overselling whatever they were supposed to be experiencing, it filled me with joy.

It’s a fun show. Everything about it is fun, including the little details.

Ooh, a serious one. This is going to be my first ever hybrid Discussion/Analysis post.

Okay, so I think we’re talking about two different things here.

I won’t argue that I think Tyrus could have absolutely happened sooner and been explored more.

I obviously can’t say with certainty, but I assume that was at least somewhat the plan leading out of season two. The setup for their relationship was all already there by the end of it. They’d met, they had bumps, they grew really close, and they capped the whole season off with TJ looking back at Cyrus. All the elements were in place that you could jump right into this storyline in TJ’s next appearance. (Not necessarily them canoning, but at least the exploration of TJ’s feelings or some movement towards canoning.)

When Cyrus’s lookback happened, it was addressed in the very next episode (granted following a break in seasons). I don’t know that TJ’s would’ve been as immediate, but I don’t think you have him look back in the season two finale if you don’t intend on truly paying it off for 21 episodes. (Or, at least 13, if you want to say 3x13 was the real start of a storyline involving TJ’s homosexuality.)

So, yeah, look, I’m speculating wildly, but I would imagine the original creative idea was to address TJ’s lookback early in season three and start getting into it, and that, yes, that idea was likely kiboshed from above.

What I will argue is that the bench scene is subtle but not ambiguous. We’ve made the semi-joke constantly around here that there’s “No heterosexual explanation for this!” but, truly, there is no heterosexual explanation for the bench scene: two boys, one of whom has already explicitly stated he’s gay, slowly reaching for and holding each other’s hands, intertwining their fingers while they sit by the fire and stare into each other’s eyes, nervously smiling. This is something that has been built towards for multiple seasons. If you’ve been watching the show, if you’ve been paying attention to it, if you care about the characters, especially TJ and Cyrus, it’s very clear what’s happening here.

This feels like talking about people who weren’t sure Cyrus was gay after the first two times he came out because he didn’t use the word. Or people who thought Cyrus wasn’t gay anymore after he said his crush on Jonah was gone. I sympathize with some of the younger set who maybe don’t have the world sense to follow along with this, but, come on, at some point, we’re three seasons in and you have to keep up with the level of the storytelling. I don’t mean this in an insulting way, but if someone can’t get what’s happening here, then maybe this whole thing isn’t for them. Maybe if all they know right now is that Cyrus is gay and accepted and happy, then that’s good enough, and they can hold onto that idea and grow with that and catch the next train, whenever it comes along. Maybe this moment is for all the people who get it.

That’s about the kids in the casual audience. Now, if we’re talking about an adult homophobe -- one who would express the kind of outrage that we believe Disney fears -- it’s a different story. If an adult homophobe is really watching that scene and thinking, “Seems pretty straight to me” then it feels like it doesn’t matter what they would’ve done in the finale. They could’ve said “gay,” they could’ve said “boyfriend,” Cyrus and TJ could’ve lead a pride parade down the street outside Celia’s house while blasting -- well, I was going to pick a gay song here for the joke, but probably “Born This Way” would be the most appropriate one, so -- “Born This Way” from loud speakers, and that homophobe would’ve been like, “Nice parade.” As ignorant as homophobes are, even they are not that dense. An adult pretending Tyrus isn’t a couple after the bench scene requires a level of impenetrably willful ignorance.

Anyway, the truth is that angry homophobes aren’t watching the show. They never do. They like to read headlines and get mad, but they’re cowardly and, most of all, lazy, and they don’t like to put in the actual footwork. They like to leave comments on articles they haven’t read, about shows they haven’t watched. They like to post reactions to stuff they see in their Facebook feed or send one sentence responses like, “There goes Disney Channel!!!” or “What is happening to our country?!?!” And then they like to scroll on to the next thing that will feed their sad rage about how the world is changing around them.

If you want to think about Disney censorship as a way of preventing those homophobes from being outraged, it’s not the textuality of the scene itself, it’s the placement at the end. Delaying them canoning until the finale just makes for less work. Show’s over. There’s nothing to defend. No one’s signing a petition to get a show off the air that’s just aired its last episode. Most of the articles written will be about everything happening in the finale, and Tyrus would just be a part of it.

And that is more or less what’s happened. Just about every major article I’ve seen about the finale has discussed Tyrus, and discussed them as textually getting together -- again, there’s no ambiguity there -- but has also brought them up in conjunction with what happened with Andi and Jonah, with Muffy getting together, and with Andi getting into SAVA. And the articles themselves tend to largely be about the show ending as a whole and its impact. (No one needs to send me articles trying to prove or disprove this. I’ve been over a lot of them. Some are more Tyrus focused -- the ones in the gay media for sure -- and some just mention it -- more traditional media sources. This is the general gist of most of them.)

So the article headlines mostly read “Andi Mack Finale” or “Andi Mack Ends Run” or something like that. The homophobes -- who, again, aren’t watching the show and are getting all their information about it via article headlines -- see those headlines and don’t even remember Andi Mack was the show they hated from two years ago because their rage is mostly performative and short-lived. They get mad in the minute but forget about the specifics of the stuff within a day.

Like I said in the recap, I won’t argue that there’s a scene with more that wouldn’t work, but I personally don’t see the bench scene as not having accomplished everything it needed to.

I had only planned to do one set before and after the finale for Tyrus Week, but I will point you and anyone else interested in making their own TJ and Cyrus texts to this post I made that should give you the basic tools needed for the job. (Use them! You wouldn’t believe what a pain in the butt it was to get that background clean like that!)

Thank you, honestly. That’s so, so sweet. But I have no plans to do that.

Like I mentioned at the start of this post, I’m working on something now that I’ll tell you guys about shortly that’s look-backy and will hit on some stuff from those seasons. (Though not in the same vein as the recaps.)

The recaps take a long time to produce, and as much as I’ve loved this show and this fandom, I will be honest and tell you guys I am sort of planning my exit.

This blog has become something of a part-time job for me. Not in the work sense because I have truly enjoyed all this, but just in the time sense. I’ve put a lot of time in and I would like to rededicate that time back toward other things I’ve put on hold for the last year and a half.

It’s starting to feel like making you shout Lightning Round! each time was a mistake now that I’m answering stuff seriously or sadly.

I was getting emotional multiple times while writing it, because of the show, because of the fandom, because of this whole journey we’ve all been on together.

I appreciate you saying this so much because that’s what I’ve always hoped has come through in the things I’ve written about this show. That I’ll make jokes or point out holes or goofy details or whatever, but that I couldn’t do this -- I couldn’t commit myself to this as much as I have -- if I truly didn’t love the show. That everything I’m doing here comes from a place of love and celebrating the show and embracing it for its good stuff and its silly stuff.

It wasn’t a perfect show, but that was always what made it kind of perfect.

DOAFP 1x08 Review

Matters of Diplomacy was a great and dramatic ep that exploded the tensions at the core of the show’s story lines. Let’s dig in!

It was a wise choice for ep 8 to be just a day later than ep 7 in universe as it allows the momentum and tensions built in ep 7 to carry forward to ep 8. We see different types of relationships being tested tonight: the platonic friendship between Elena and Sasha, the crush/platonic friendship between Bobby and Liam, and the romantic relationship between Gabi and Sam

Bobby’s story line took big strides forward tonight. I think by the end of this ep even the most casual of viewers will have clued in that Bobby is gay and likes Liam; nothing has technically been said aloud but that kind of jealousy is unmistakable. Bobby and Gabi’s story lines share some parallels tonight as it was Bobby and Gabi who made sure that Liam and Sam would be at the dance and the dinner and it was Bobby and Gabi who mess things up

For Bobby it has been all of a day since he had a moment with Liam and he’s still giddy over the tennis ball trophy Liam gave him and Elena’s talk about the dance being where true feelings are revealed clearly got him hoping that if he and Liam went to the dance that something may happen. And that talk with the married gay hairdresser gave him a bit of a confidence boost

Among the many cool things this show has done so far is to feature both adult and kid lgbtq characters and actually have them interact like we saw with Cami and Bobby in ep 7 and Bobby and the hairdresser in ep 8. It’s nice that Bobby has these in universe role models and if the show goes on long enough I’d expect Cami to help Bobby

I was shocked that Bobby lashing out included an actual physical fight. In many ways though it is true to the teenage experience where wild mood swings and poor decision making skills are common. We’ve seen Bobby get frustrated or upset before but never this angry and for such a chill guy as Bobby to get so aggressive really shows the depths of his feelings and confusion and disappointment

I also want to commend the show for writing Bobby as such an active character and for giving him an established hobby and supporting characters dedicated to his story line. On Andi Mack we saw Cyrus get jealous but he was never allowed to act on that jealousy like Bobby does and he was certainly never allowed to get angry even when it would have been the realistic response and he was usually a passive character. The fatal flaw in Cyrus’ story line was that he was never given a hobby or team or club of his own so when his sexuality story line was being heavily censored or when the writers were screwing things up there was nothing to fall back on. At least with Bobby they can always fall back on tennis related plots if things go downhill and that will make a world of difference in making Bobby seem like an actual main character

I’ve said from the start that I don’t think Cartero is mutual and the dance did nothing to change that. The symbolism of Liam not wanting to stop slow dancing with a girl and go off with Bobby isn’t subtle. Certainly Bobby’s anger was caused in part by being hit in the face with the fact that Liam is straight. I’ve been surprised that so many people in this fandom who have come from the Andi Mack fandom have been comparing Cartero and Tyrus when all the evidence points to Cartero being the Jyrus of doafp. As I said in an ask last week, the dance serves the same function for Bobby as seeing Jonah ask Andi out at the Space Otters dinner served for Cyrus

I think for doafp it would be wise to separate Bobby’s sexuality story line from his ship story line in any analysis of the show. Cyrus’ sexuality story line was much less censored than his ship story line with TJ and in part that’s because Disney had less of a problem showing Cyrus with a hopeless crush on a clearly straight boy then they did with showing him with a requited crush on another gay kid. And of course there was never any problem showing Cyrus dating Iris. There’s a reason why Cyrus could talk about his crush on Jonah several times but never once got to talk about his crush on TJ and why Cyrus could say the word gay when coming out to Jonah but Cyrus and TJ had to have a silent handhold when they came out to each other. I expect Bobby coming out to his friends and family and using the word gay will be much less censored and drawn out then it was on Andi Mack but I think Bobby actually dating a boy is going to be much harder for the show to depict if they’re renewed. Hell even Seblos which is the only canon gay ship on Disney + has had several of their scenes cut in two different eps

There’s a saying that history doesn’t repeat but it does rhyme and I can only hope that Brandon Severs Jr doesn’t become the Joshua Rush of the doafp fandom. It’s great that he ships Cartero and wants to promote the show but he’s not just another fan and can’t act like one. In the Andi Mack fandom there were lines being blurred and crossed by actors and writers and it made things messy and unpleasant and I really don’t want to see that happen with doafp. I’m sure Brandon means well but people will take his tweets and likes as hints for the show’s future and as of now the show itself and his tweets are telling very different stories It’s one thing to support Cartero but so far there’s no evidence that Liam is gay and there’s never been a bisexual character on Disney before so unless ep 10, which is the only Liam ep left, has an unprecedented twist all this hyping he’s doing will end up being somewhat baity

I’m glad Sasha stood up to Elena who has really been a bad friend to her lately. Of all the relationships that took a hit this ep it’s Elena and Sasha’s friendship that has been around the longest which makes this fight all the more painful to witness. It looks like this conflict will play out through their school trip to Tallahassee and I hope Elena really makes it up to Sasha somehow. Also interesting to see Jessica back in the mix; she’s making up with Sasha but not Elena while at the same time not having atoned for her ditching them in the first place. As always it’s refreshing to see this show so openly tackle the reality of puberty and not shy away from discussing periods and body hair

Gabi and Sam truly are hetero goals. I like the focus on the adult problems we’re getting on the show. In some ways their conflict has the highest stakes and there’s not going to be an easy solution moving forward. For Gabi this must be a nightmare of sorts, watching Sam play the same role Robert did and worrying that it might end the same way. Sam was right in saying that he’s been going along with what Gabi wanted but that he’s a part of this relationship as well. We know Gabi flees Miami next week and drives Elena to Tallahassee so we’ll see if she decides that she’s ready to try and move forward with Sam or if she’s not ready

We learned tonight that Elena and Bobby don’t speak Spanish which suggests that Robert didn’t speak it either. We also learn that Robert was shyer than Sam (and I guess Bobby is named after Robert). Also get a nice little continuity nod with Francisca believing the same story about Iguanas in toilets that Liam’s grandmother believed

I really like that Disney + lets characters get away with saying what the hell and pissed off, it’s so much more natural than having kids with squeaky clean vocabs

I really enjoy seeing Elena pine after Joey when he’s just this dweeby kid

Elena and Bobby have such a true to life sibling relationship

The Beluga whale song prank was a good one imo

Looking Ahead:

If you’re on twitter and instagram there’s already a campaign to get the show renewed and might as well start it now when there’s still some hope

Monyca seems to have clued in that Bobby cares more about Liam than her and I hope she dumps him. Setting aside his sexuality, Bobby just hasn’t been a very good boyfriend

Looks like the last two eps take places in a fairly short span as Elena is on the school trip for both eps. I’m very excited to see how all these plots resolve, especially Bobby’s. Hopefully the show gets renewed as it really is something special

1/2 maybe I’m very dense but I still don’t completely understand everything that happened w/Kira. Why did TJ ditch Cyrus for Kira’s costume? Did TJ and Kira actually date and break up? Why was TJ so willing to be her friend and not notice how mean she was (like at the table when they were with Cyrus). And the whole making TJ choose thing was confusing too. Because it was out of the blue and TJ never had to “choose”. He was friends with both of them. I’m so confused! Do you understand everything?

When Kira said “hello I’m over here” to get TJ to stop looking after Cyrus, that sounded very girlfriend-ish to me. I really wish they had explained all the TJ/Cyrus/Kira stuff. And Buffy said “you know why he’s hanging out with her”, everyone assumes that Buffy meant that she knew TJ was ha find with Kira to hide his feelings for Cyrus. But how can we know for sure? Hahaha okay. Idk if everyone agrees with what I’m gonna say, but this is how i grasp it. Come one, come all, as I answer hard hitting questions about KIRA

First and foremost, Kira was brought in to delay Tyrus. Unfortunately, that was her main plot driver. If Kira had not been involved: i think Summer Salt would have played out, someone would have said something about them being in a ‘couples costume’, internalised homophobia/gay panic, TJ dips until the end for the same kinda endgame OR Tyrus canons a little earlier, bench scene outside of school instead, who could predict the next couple episodes? only terri

But we were 2/3 getting a delay in Tyrus (well 100% but yk what i mean) and Kira was unfortunately up to bat. Take her plot line through like this: Kira knows (or at least assumes) TJ has more than friendship feelings for Cyrus. Kira likes TJ. Kira knows TJ his a jock, popular, likely insecure, and uses that to her advantage to get what she wants (a weird, not really real, relationship with TJ)

So 1. Why did TJ ditch Cyrus for Kira’s costume? Throw your hands up for homophobia! look back a bit, couples costume? So that path was eliminated by this. Because, as Kira subtly pointed out to TJ, why would he rather do a couples costume with a GUY than with a GIRL (her)? TJ was caught here, either basically out himself to her (as she hinted it was suspicious he would wanna do a costume with Cyrus) or play along. TJ plays along with Kira, as he’s afraid of even the possibility of being outed.

2. Did TJ and Kira actually date and break up? No, the MackChat kids are 8. TJ never ‘dated’ Kira. He spent a lot of time with her, but think of it more like. TJ thought of Kira as Buffy to his Cyrus. Kira thought of TJ as her boyfriend who didnt wanna label it (jonah tease). That’s why it’s a little confusing, because it was to them too. But not dating, no break up.

3. Why was TJ so willing to be her friend? I know A LOT happens in Andi Mack and TJ is but a mere side character, but TJ is not in Cyrus’ friend group. He’s in - oh, yeah, all his friends dumped him after he reported his best friend to the cops! lol! - TJ doesn’t .. have any friends after 306. He’s just kinda .. desperate for a friend. (Yes, he wants Cyrus but Cyrus is his crush and it’s hard to share that space when you’re 14). Idk if yall have ever gone through a middle school day with no friends but .. guys its rough, like soul-crushing lunch goes from the best part of the day to the worst, rough. So Kira comes along, she likes basketball and gives TJ attention, that’s kinda all he needs to jump on board. Someone wants to hang out with him! And do his favourite thing!

and not notice how mean she was? TJ is a boy. I know that’s a dumb answer but jesus 14 year old boys are DENSE. Kira wasn’t outright saying anything mean to Cyrus, she was being rude, but in a snarky, covered in smiles way. But everything that came out of her mouth was ‘nice’. To TJ, she was being welcoming and Cyrus was being flaky and disliked her for no reason (Buffy kicked HER off the team, after all)

4. the whole making TJ choose thing was confusing too. I’m with you on this because, yeah, really thought she was gonna flat out call TJ out for having a crush LMAOOO. So to attempt my explanation, I have to preface this a bit. Take what I say with a grain of salt, alright? I do truly love TJ Kippen with all my heart.

But TJ is kinda mean, lol. He’s nice to Cyrus and Cyrus’ friends cos he’s whipped head-over-heels, but here’s the thing: He and Kira probably laughed at kids playing bball poorly on the court at the park, they probably made fun of people at the minigolf place, sending their balls into the artificial lake, they probably called the kids getting A’s in math nerds. They’ve probably laughed at kids dancing EXACTLY how Cyrus danced at the party. But there’s TJ, defensive, mad at Kira for laughing at him like that.

So they joke and laugh at everyone, but they can’t make fun of Cyrus? To Kira, it’s now plainly obvious: TJ cares about Cyrus more than he does about having fun with her. So here’s her ultimatum: You have fun with me, and we’re friends, or you’re a drag around Cyrus.

Obviously TJ picks Cyrus because he has a fat crush, and being nice is like the smallest price in the world to pay for that boy. Think of him picking between them as his final step outside of his mean body, the nice person inside finally clawed their whole way out.

5. when TJ and Kira were at the park and they had planned to feed the ducks, was that a date? No, probs just post basketball stuff and the park is small. TJ was just avoiding the swings.

6. When Kira said “hello I’m over here” to get TJ to stop looking after Cyrus, that sounded very girlfriend-ish to me. Cos she thought they were in some kind of relationship, due to TJ having no other friends, the exclusivity was pretty real

7. Buffy said “you know why he’s hanging out with her”, everyone assumes that Buffy meant that she knew TJ was hanging with Kira to hide his feelings for Cyrus. But how can we know for sure? Here it is, the final question, and perhaps most up-to-interpretation answer.

Answer 1: Buffy knows Kira is JUST like TJ was, she dealt with her on her team, and has seen how she interacts with people. She knows TJ is hanging out with her because he’s lost his friends and gone soft for Cyrus, and needs something else in his life to keep him on top/captain/popular

Answer 2: Buffy knows TJ likes Cyrus and is scared of that, thus is hanging around Kira to hide those feelings. The thing that doesn’t add up here is: When Tira wrap their arms around each other, Buffy apologises, like what she said was wrong. So why would she do that if she was sure TJ was only with her as a beard?

Answer 3: Buffy has put together that TJ has lowkey been bullied into being embarrassed of being so close with Cyrus. She knows he’s only hanging out with Kira because she’s basically forcing him too, and he’s capitalising on the situation by using her to make him look popular and ‘like the other boys’ more or less. When she says ‘I’m sorry.’ to Cyrus, she’s sympathising with him, understanding that it sucks that TJ is in this position with Kira and he’s a dumbass jock.

I think Answer 3 makes the most sense.

Well! I hope I answered all your questions to some form of semi-understanding. I know it’s a lot and it’s really confusing and they didn’t leave time to really explain it.

The short answer for the kiddos at home: TJ never liked KIRA!! He liked CYRUS!!
