seeing people talk about the new animated superman show reminds me that the issue superman's had for the last few decades in mainstream media, which is that too many dudebros assume the point of his character is about his "power". like "oooh look how scary he could be, if superman were real he'd be soooo dangerous" and missing the real truth. the ultimate truth. the actual truth:
superman works because he is a fundamentally very similar character to spider-man.

“I was standing next to Charlie and his kit [the first time we met]. I had no idea what to talk about, so I offered to help him schlep his kit. He smiled and declined my offer; he already knew better and that my skills lay elsewhere. He had mesmerised me at the Station Hotel…
Our last sessions together were 'We Love You' and ‘Dandelion'. As happened on many a Stones tune going in, there was no pre-arranged ending - better to see if the meat and potatoes were in place before applying the veg. The ending was a mélange of Nicky Hopkins and Brian Jones on keyboards and woodwind, Keith and Mick on hallowed vocals and Charlie leading the fray with improvised fills. At the time I thought the fills were just for me.”-Andrew Loog Oldham, 2022

Shitposting time, but I find it kind of hilarious how, despite their apparent antagonism, both Faerghus and Adrestia revere a dude who is named with the cultural norms of the other country.
King of Lions Loog is actually Loog von Blaiddyd - meaning for all of the northern barbarians torn apart for funsies, Fodlan, after the war, dropped the three names convention/tria nomina from proto/early Adrestia - an Adrestia who rebelled.
Meanwhile, Great Emperor Willy was Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg, having the tria nomina that will later be in use (or return to use) in Faerghus and parts of Leicester.
Fodlan AU : Adrestia tried to “rename” Willy because it just cannot do that Great Emperor Wilhelm, the First of his Name and the Founder of Adrestia was actually a barbarian nor never changed his name to showcase how “civilised” he became, as opposed to the northern barbarians who still have three names.
However, Rhea put her veto on it, Willy was Willy, and his descendants, being not even half of the man he was, won’t suddenly start changing his name to fit in whatever human scheme they have. So even if Freidrich III asked her to edit his name in her books, Archbishop Livia still wrote and preached about Emperor Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg being Saint Seiros’s steadfast ally, Friedrich III be damned.

An audience with... John Paul Jones
(from Uncut, April 2010 - link)
You’re stuck on a deserted island, you have one instrument you can bring. It is: a) piano, b) bass or c) mandolin? (Gary Attersley, Ontario, Canada)
Oh… that’s horrible! I’ll probably get Hugh Manson – the guy who builds all my bass guitars – to build me some monstrous instrument that encapsulated all three! Hugh and his brother Andy Manson once actually designed me a triple-necked guitar with 12-string guitar, six-string guitar and mandolin on it! Andy also designed a triple-necked mandolin. But I guess if it really came down to it on a desert island, it would have to be the piano, because you can do so much on it. You’re a whole band. The bass is not much fun on your own.
John, it’s so good to see you so engaged with today. Any advice for old farts who can’t move on? (Andrew Loog Oldham)
Who are you calling an old fart? I dunno, Andy, you tell me! Ha ha. He’s done a good job of staying up to date. Andrew, of course, gave me the name John Paul Jones. I was John Baldwin, until Andrew saw a poster for the French film version of John Paul Jones. I thought it ’d look great in CinemaScope, as I wanted to do music for films. I imagined it saying “Music By John Paul Jones”, over the whole screen. I never realised then that he was the Horatio Nelson of America!
I know that you’ve been getting heavily into bluegrass lately – who are some of your favourite bluegrass artists of all time? (Ryan Godek, Wilmington, Delaware)
Apart from Bill Monroe, you mean? Oh, there’s loads. I’m friends with the Del McCoury band, I love that style of classic bluegrass. I love Sam Bush’s Newgrass stuff. And of course there’s Nickel Creek, Chris Feely, Mike Marshall. I love it all, really. One thing I like about bluegrass is that you don’t require amplifiers, drums and trucks. You can pull an instrument out of a box and get on with some instant music making. I carry a mandolin around wherever I go. I also like the fact bluegrass musicians play more than one instrument. There’s a tradition of them swapping instruments. In bluegrass bands I swap between double bass, fiddle and banjo.
One Butthole Surfers anecdote, please? (Dave Grohl)
Ha! I was brought in to produce the Butthole Surfers’ 1993 album, Independent Worm Saloon. I guess it was to give it a heavy rock vibe, but it didn’t work like that. They were actually incredibly hard-working in the studio, but I do recall running up a phenomenal bar-bill at the San Rafael studio. And then there was Gibby [Haynes, Butthole Surfers’ frontman] and his… eccentric studio behaviour. Gibby did one vocal take shouting into his guitar. He held it out in front of his face and screamed at it. Ha! He was trying to find out if it picked up through the pick-ups, which it kind of did. And that was pretty good.
How’s the violin coming along? (Sean, Berkshire)
I started about three years ago. With the guitar, or the piano, you can sound OK quite quickly. With the violin, it takes much longer. Once you get past the first six months of scraping, of muttering to yourself, “What is this fucking horrible noise on my shoulder?” you get the odd musical bit, and you think, ‘Oh, this is starting to get good.’ And you continue with it for a while. I’m getting into country fiddle playing, Celtic folk songs, a bit of swing. Basic stuff, but very satisfying.
Why not record a second ‘Automatic For The People’ with REM? (Franz Greul, Austria)
They haven’t asked me! But doing the string arrangements for that album was a great experience, actually. They sent me the demos of their songs, and we went into a studio in Atlanta, with members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. They were great songs, something you can really get your teeth into as an arranger. And I’ve been good friends with them ever since.
How did you first meet Josh Homme? And is he still a notorious party monster? (Rob Hirst, Kippax, Leeds)
Well, I think we’ve all calmed down rather a lot. Dave introduced me to Josh at his 40th birthday party. It was a ridiculous themed place where they have jousting with knights. As Dave said, it was like somewhere you’d have your 14th birthday party. Or maybe even your 4th. Anyway, Dave sat Josh and I together for a blind date. Which was reasonably embarrassing for both of us, surrounded by people going “prithee this” and challenging each other to duels. But we survived the trauma and went into the studio the next day, and just started jamming. And I knew immediately it was going to be something special.
If Them Crooked Vultures had Spice Girls-like nicknames what would they be? (Paul Jones, Liverpool)
Dave would be Smiley Vulture. He can’t stop grinning. Josh would be Slinky Vulture. He’s a slinky kinda guy. And I’d be Speedy, I guess. Or Jumpy. So there you go. Smiley, Slinky and Speedy. Or does that sound more like the dwarfs?
I remember you being a pretty funky bass genius back in the day! What memories do you have of those sessions? (Donovan)
The sessions with Don and Mickie Most were great, because we were given a free hand. I usually got leeway, because I was the sort of Motown/Stax specialist, so producers in the mid ’60s would get me in for cover versions of American records, and none of them could write bass parts convincingly enough, so I was London’s answer to James Jamerson, I guess! And I was certainly encouraged to get kinda… funky when I worked with Donovan.
How did it feel to see Jimmy Page and Robert Plant venture off in their own project in the ‘90s without mentioning a word of it to you? (Danny Luscombe, Hull)
Oh yeah, I was pissed off about it. The surprise was in not being told. It’s ancient history now, but it was a bit annoying to find out about it while reading the papers. It came just after Robert and I had been discussing the idea of doing an Unplugged project. Then I’m on tour in Germany with Diamanda Galás, I turn on the TV and see Robert and Jimmy doing it, with someone else playing all my parts! I was pissed off at the time. You would be, woudn’t you? But… it’s all in the past, isn’t it?
Did you listen to much work by Josh Homme or Dave Grohl before you were contacted in relation to joining Them Crooked Vultures, and if so, how did you honestly rate it? (Ralph Ryan, Lisronagh, County Tipperary)
I did like the Foo Fighters and Queens Of The Stone Age, before I’d met either of them. There’s a tendency for people – especially musicians from my generation – to say that there has been this terrible decline in musicianship, that today’s bands haven’t got the chops, blah blah blah. But that’s not true at all. There’s always some people for whom technique on an instrument isn’t necessary. They can get their ideas across without being able to have the chops. But Josh really does have the chops, he just doesn’t feel the need to flash them about all the time. In fact, there were a few riffs he gave me that I had to simplify, because they were bloody difficult to play. I really had to work at it, where he could just flick it off. He is an astonishing musician.
Were you serious when you told Peter Grant that you wanted to jack it in to become choirmaster at Winchester Cathedral? (Brian Fisher, Manchester)
Ha! That was a tongue-in-cheek joke, although I was serious about leaving Led Zeppelin in 1973 unless things changed. But Peter did sort things out pretty quickly. What kind of choirmaster would I have made? A bloody good one! Listen, any way that they’ll pay you for making music is just the best situation in the world. I’d do it for nothing. I don’t care what music it is. I just love it all. The rubbing of notes together. I love it all. I would be very passionate about whatever I decided to do.
What was the worst session you ever did as a jobbing session player? (Adam Burns, Castleford, West Yorkshire)
I generally have fun memories of that time. I’d criss-cross London playing two or three sessions a day, going between Trident and Olympic and Abbey Road and Philips in Marble Arch, you know. You’d be backing Shirley Bassey, Cat Stevens, Lulu, whoever was paying you. The worst experience was a Muzak session. With Muzak sessions, the music was deliberately boring. I distinctly remember one session where I embellished the bass part a little bit, just so that it wasn’t so boring for me to play. They said, “No, you can’t do that. Any interest in the music will distract people’s attention from when they’re meant to be eating.” Or standing in a fucking lift. For fuck’s sake! So I was like, “OK, thanks, bye!”

(About the soulmate au)
...More than Sothis contacting Dimitri directly in his mind i thought more of sothis wacking the divine pulse like a faulty tv remote until something clicked and somehow he started remembering the time loops... he somehow keep doing things differently each time w different results (executing Miklan, forgiving Miklan, fixing his relationship w Felix, getting into a bigger fight w Felix, forgiving the western lords, having Silvain and Ingrid killed, saving Silvain and Ingrid, finding out even more about Anselma, etc.) until he thought he was actually going crazy and broke down to Rodrigue and Rod told him about the old legend of loog and the maiden of the wind bc he realizes Byleth's death is the common denominator... aka Dimitri's time itself is locked into her existance... and he starts to find more abour her and becomes intrigued w her... 😃
The sothis dragging him by his ugly hair was more like, Sothis fucked up and he accidentally got dragged in the time loop, whoops... SO technically not a soulmate au but they all think it is because of the legend.
So since the legend says the only way time advanced for Loog again was to receive the love of his maiden I guess Dimitri will have to put all of his efforts into seducing the beautiful fish eyed mercenary... for ⋆🌟✪✨ Faerghus ⋆🌟✪✨...
I haven't abandoned you, nonny. The problem with actually writing this is that it would necessarily include a lot of fighting lol. But I do love the idea of him figuring it out. I changed it up a bit but I hope you like this silly little snippet I wrote 😊
Dimitri could take this torture no longer. He hurried into Rodrigue's tent, drawing the flap closed tightly.
The former Duke read his mood without a word. "What's troubling you, Your Majesty?"
"Rodrigue, this may sound mad, but I am reliving the same day over and over again."
The older man's face paled, and he put aside the documents he was studying. "Reliving what day, exactly?"
"This one. We go to battle and encounter Jeralt's Mercenaries before reaching the main imperial force. But we never get past that part. After the Ashen Demon dies, or if I die, I wake up to the same day. I've lost count of how many times it's been so far."
Rodrigue was silent for several minutes, probably considering how to keep the Kingdom afloat with a delusional king.
"You're absolutely sure it's the Ashen Demon's death that causes the events to repeat?"
"Yes. The last time, I faced her myself and felt time pulling me backward as soon as the light died from her eyes. It's hazy, but I know at other times, she has killed me. But death never comes. I simply wake up to do it all again."
"Your Majesty... Dimitri," he said with a sigh. His old friend looked like he had aged a decade in the last few minutes. "There's something your father didn't get a chance to tell you. A special circumstance of your Blaiddyd blood."
"Is it madness? Hallucinations?"
Finally, Rodrigue's pained expression softened, and he gave the king a reassuring smile.
"No, my dear boy, nothing like that. It concerns your soulmate."
He scoffed. "This is no time to think of romance!" The royal advisors would disagree, of course. They hounded him about his lack of heirs daily, and he was sick of it.
But Rodrigue held up a hand to silence his protest. "Hear me out. There is a legend about the soulmates of Faerghan kings, going all the way back to Loog and the Maiden of the Wind."
"Spit it out, man, please!" Dimitri begged. Legends and soulmates? What importance could those trivial things have at a time like this?
"The Ashen Demon is your soulmate, Your Majesty."
Dimitri gave him a flat stare, waiting for clarification. But the other man was silent. "Is that some kind of twisted joke? You think I could love a monster like that?"
In some of the timelines, he'd seen her cut down Rodrigue himself with no remorse! Though, now that he'd lived the day from several perspectives, she only did that after Shez killed Jeralt right in front of her. Not that the circumstances justified the murder, but how could he condemn her when he held the same hatred in his heart?
Which is why this soulmate talk was truly unbelievable. It was just as unlikely that anyone could love a monster like him.
He looked back to Rodrigue, who seemed to be waiting for the shock to subside before continuing.
"You're aware that Loog and his wife first met on opposite sides of the battlefield."
"Yes, of course. Everyone knows that story. When Loog saw Deichtine, he dropped Areadbhar and beseeched her to join his side, for he would rather die than harm such a beautiful and talented warrior. When she lowered her sword and took his hand, the soul bond manifested."
Ashe and Ingrid loved the story, but it had always struck Dimitri as unrealistic and unnecessarily dramatic. More likely, both sides had suffered major losses, so the two commanders arranged a political marriage to avoid further bloodshed. Count Rowe had not-so-subtly suggested the same strategy to soothe relations in the West.
"Yes," Rodrigue confirmed. "That is the version in the storybooks. But the secret legend handed down the line of Blaiddyd is that Loog killed Diechtine when they met on the battlefield. The king stooped to take her head just before she took her last breath, and the soul bond formed. He cried out to the goddess to save her, to take his own life if needed."
Dimitri had leaned in, drawn to this version of the story much more than the original.
"The goddess took pity on the soulmates, unfortunate enough to be born in a time of war. She decreed that she would save Diechtine, but the descendant of Blaiddyd must win the heart of his maiden fairly, without revealing their bond. And by doing so, end the war which caused suffering for the Goddess' beloved people. The day would repeat endlessly until he was able to accomplish the feat."
"I understand, but what does that have to do with me?"
"The problem is, the goddess wasn't exactly specific on which Blaiddyd descendant, which maiden, or which war. Situations with the same broad characteristics have presented themselves more than once throughout history."
Dimitri had always thought the goddess aloof, but this information put her in a new light. Maybe she was simply incompetent.
"So this curse has been passed down to me."
Rodrigue raised an eyebrow at him. "Most people would consider a guaranteed soulmate a blessing, Your Majesty."
"What a burden," the king replied. "It's hard to believe that more than one of my forbears have met their soulmates this way."
Rodrigue failed to completely suppress a smirk. "Ah. Well, your line appears to prefer its lovers... feisty."
"Rodrigue!" Dimitri cried, blushing furiously. "To say such a thing at a time like this!"
He'd never thought of such things, not when there was a kingdom to run and thousands of people whose lives depended on him! And he had certainly never considered his... preferences.
Although, thinking about it outside of the heat of battle, the Ashen Demon was quite lovely. And her skill was beyond compare... Gods, he sounded like Sylvain.
"My apologies, Your Majesty," Rodrigue said with a chuckle. He didn't seem terribly repentant. "Circumstances aside, I for one am happy to know you have a soulmate. All of us have tried to get you to take better care of yourself. Perhaps she will be the one you finally listen to."
The man across from Dimitri may have been like a second father, but this was no time for levity! Wasn't his misery obvious?
"There's one thing I don't understand. How did Loog convince Diechtine of their love in mere moments upon the battlefield?"
"That's the other secret. The king actually snuck into her tent before dawn broke, so he had several hours to woo her. This was after many attempts, of course, each one teaching him something new about the maiden. The conversation on the battlefield was merely a performance for their troops to see."
"He... wooed her," repeated Dimitri in disbelief. "I have to... woo the Ashen Demon? In less than a day?"
"Cheer up, Your Majesty!" said Rodrigue with a good-natured pat on the back. "We already know there's something she'll love about you. We just have to figure out what it is!"
Dimitri left the tent with a tempest swirling in his mind. He knew what he had to do. It would be difficult, painful even, but this wasn't just for him. It was for all of Faerghus-- no, all of Fodlan-- so he would do whatever it took, no matter how humiliating.
He walked into the mess hall like a man condemned and mindlessly piled something onto a plate. Bernadetta would probably be horrified by his meal, but there was no time to consider something as inconsequential as food. Scanning the dining room, he spotted his target and sat down.
"Hey, Your Majesty! Look at you, eating while the sun is up!"
He rolled his eyes. There was no point delaying the inevitable. "Sylvain, I need your help... with a girl."
(Diechtine (DECH-tin-uh with the ch like in the Scottish loch) is a mortal woman that the god Lugh had a baby with. That was the mega hero Cúchullain, who interestingly is described as going into a "blood rage" during battle. Fergus (Faerghus), Ferdia (Fhirdiad), and Derdriu are also associated with this crew!)

My Analysis of the Best Paired Endings in 3H (Part 20: Non-AM Ingrid/Ashe)
Tumblr media
Felix: If I were to die here, would you say something like you did when it was my brother? "That's the true end for a knight."
First things first, I personally think Rodrigue's comment came off substantially worse in Japanese than it did in the localization. In English, his reaction came off more as passive acceptance. Like, "well at least he died so honorably". In Japanese, I don't think it was quite as passive. The part "だ" at the end of the sentence implied the expectation or ideal of what a knight's end should be.
Dimitri: …And you would hold up such a painful end as an ideal? Ingrid: Painful end…? Even if it's Your Highness speaking, I cannot let that pass. Glenn gave his life for you. Yet, to put it that way…! Dimitri: You didn't witness his final moments. …That's why you can say that. Ingrid: …No matter what Your Highness says, he will forever be the ideal knight to me, the person to aspire to.
That was also what Ingrid thought of as the ideal death. It's how she hoped to die, when the time came. And at the very least, that probably seemed better to her than dying as a bored and lonely housewife to some nobleman she had to marry for financial reasons.
Tumblr media
Ingrid: Now that I have parted ways with my father, there is nothing to hinder my dream. However, even if I become a knight in the future, deep inside my heart… I feel like something will always remain blocked. As someone born not as a knight but as a noble, I wonder if there was a role for me to fulfill…
In VW, Ingrid runs away from home to pursue her dream of becoming a knight. The Japanese word she used in her A-Support with Byleth was "つかえる" (tsukaeru). It means "to be blocked" or "to be obstructed." In this context, it conveys the idea of being unable to move forward emotionally or mentally. She says this no matter what route you choose. Even in AM, she had doubts about knighthood.
I believe AM!Ingrid is probably pretty happy. The Kingdom doesn't collapse, Dimitri survives to become a righteous king, she stays on good terms with her father, she can pursue her own goals instead of just getting married, and her childhood friends Felix and Sylvain are alive and well (unless you let them die in Classic Mode, I guess).
However, I also know that her non-AM endings—where she doesn't become a knight—are very popular and many consider them better than her AM endings. I completely understand why, and I actually agree with that notion very strongly. I don't think Ingrid becoming a knight after the war is necessarily terrible, especially if she has a life partner. I just think she probably experiences more positive character development and personal growth in Verdant Wind than Azure Moon.
Tumblr media
Ingrid: ...Your Highness. I will not throw away my life for someone else's sake. ...However, would you permit me to live for someone's sake, Your Highness? Not in the sense of throwing away my life — I want to dedicate my life to you. Dimitri: ...Wait. How should I interpret that? Ingrid: ...? However you like, Your Highness.
In Ingrid's A-Support with Dimitri, you learn that her dream of becoming a knight was probably influenced heavily by her feelings for him. She probably had a crush on him ever since they were kids and she fantasized about being the Kyphon to his Loog. She probably thought that if she pledged her life a knight, she could be by his side, almost like a wife. And she sincerely thought that she wouldn't mind dying for him, either. It'd just be dying for the person she loved.
Dimitri: Ingrid. Once this battle is over, I want you to… ………………。...As a knight, I want you to support me. … I've been thinking of saying that for a while. We get along well, don't we? Ingrid: … As a knight? Um, well, no! It's nothing! Of course, even without being told, I intend to fight for Your Highness… I mean, for our country.
In her A-Support, she told Dimitri that she was finally able to move on from Glenn's death now because of him. And she basically proposed to him. But he turned her down, only asking her to be his knight, not his wife. She was disappointed, but still accepted. And she serves as a knight to House Blaiddyd in most of her AM paired endings.
Tumblr media
Ingrid: Whatever the path, I will fight for my lord and believe in him. ……!
In VW, Dimitri was going down a dark path, and he was willing to sacrifice all of his childhood friends just to satisfy his personal grudge against Edelgard. An unrecruited Ingrid still clung to her dream and chose to go along with whatever path her lord chose. And it's definitely portrayed as negative development for her.
Ingrid: I apologize, Your Highness… I am not… like that person… Dimitri: Ingrid…….
I don't know why the localization changed Ingrid's VW death quote so much. But in Japanese, it gives off a completely different meaning than in English. She was, of course, referring to Glenn. It implies that she didn't feel like she could live up to being the ideal knight. When it truly came down to it, she realized that ideal wasn't what she aspired to, and she really wasn't content to lay down her life for Dimitri.
Tumblr media
Felix: Those who want to die, step forward. …I'll cut you all down at once.
VW was absolutely NOT Felix's ideal death. His ideal death was to spend his life with Sylvain and grow old and die peacefully alongside him. Sylvain is actually the only partner Felix can't end up with in VW because he feels too guilty about living for himself. But left unrecruited, Felix will fight very hard to survive.
Felix: Gasping for air…… This place ……My place to die…… Dimitri: ……Felix.
Felix's VW death quote is very interesting in Japanese. The first time he used the word "place" he used "ところ" (tokoro) and the second time he used the word "場所" (basho). "Basho" primarily refers to a physical location. "Tokoro" is more flexible and versatile. It is often used in expressions related to time or states of being.
Sylvain: Finally… I can go to the place where they are…
Sylvain also used "tokoro" when he died in CF. This is the way I interpreted Felix's Japanese VW death quote. He was having a vision of being someplace else. Like an afterlife place. And he realized that the physical place he was in was where he was going to die.
Tumblr media
Sylvain: Well… this is fate for you. Sorry, but… quietly accept it.
Sylvain's VW battle dialogue is a bit colder in Japanese. He tells the enemy to just accept their fate, the way he thought he had to when it came to his arranged marriage. He realized it's kill or be killed. And he didn't want to die. He apologized with the word "悪い" (warui). Specifically, the word translates to "bad" or "evil." But it can also describe moral judgments or expressions of regret. Like "my bad".
Sylvain: Hey, Your Highness… enough…let's put an end to the bad dream, yeah……?
Sylvain's unrecruited death quote in VW is completely different in Japanese. In English, they just reused his Classic Mode death quote for some reason I can't understand. But in Japanese, it's interesting because the standard word for "nightmare" is "悪夢" (akumu). It is the common way to refer to a frightening or distressing dream during sleep. But Sylvain used "悪い夢" (warui yume).
While grammatically correct, it's not frequently used to describe nightmares that way in everyday language. Sylvain's dream was to die alongside Felix. But not THIS way. And in Japanese, he could only cope by telling himself that it was all just a bad dream.
Dimitri: ………………。
There are many ways to interpret Dimitri's response to Sylvain's death. Unlike with Felix and Ingrid, he didn't say his name out loud. But I don't think it was because he felt less emotion when Sylvain died. Because he also just says "……." for Mercedes. But with Sylvain, it's a much longer ellipsis. Personally, I think that Sylvain's dying words were so disturbing that he was just rendered speechless.
Tumblr media
Felix: …I've known that boar prince since before birth. Before I knew it, he was always by my side… Maybe he was even my close friend. Byleth: Maybe? Felix: …I didn't understand his hatred or his agony toward the Empire at all. If it were me… Could I have saved him? Could I have stopped him?
After Dimitri's death, Felix used the term "親友" (shinyuu). It means "close friend" or "best friend." The localization chose "best friend". But in this context, I personally believe he was using it to mean "close friend". "Shinyuu" implies a close friendship, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are your single closest friend like "best friend" does. Felix was saying that he used to consider himself to be close to Dimitri. But in hindsight, maybe they were never really as close as he thought they were, because he never truly understood his feelings.
Sylvain: There's nothing left after he wields his lance. It's like being hit by a great storm. …What drives him to that extent is probably his hatred toward the Empire, after all. Byleth: Wasn't he different before? Sylvain: Yeah... Maybe it's just that we didn't know him back then.
Sylvain has a similar line in CF where he admits that maybe they didn't really know Dimitri that well, after all. He used "we", so he was definitely including Felix and Ingrid along with himself.
Ingrid: I have known His Highness since childhood, but… I have never seen him like that before. The person we have known until now seems completely different…
And after the Holy Tomb, Ingrid admitted that she'd never seen that side of Dimitri before. She may have thought she was in love him, but she was in love with an idealized image of him based on who she knew as a kid. Not the person he really was as an adult.
Tumblr media
Ingrid: Among the soldiers we captured in the previous battle, there were quite a few who served His Highness. One of them told me that the Empire was involved in the "Tragedy of Duscur." If that's true, then perhaps I should have fought alongside His Highness in the army as well… (Option 1) Byleth: Why? Ingrid: I also… lost the person who was most important to me in that incident.
After the battle at Gronder in VW, Ingrid made it clear that Glenn was the most important person in the world to her. He was the reason she felt guilty about not fighting alongside Dimitri with the Kingdom.
(Option 2) Byleth: Do you regret it? Ingrid: No, not now. I actually think it's better that I'm part of this army. We will carry on the wishes of those who perished. We won't let the Empire's atrocities happen again.
You gain Support points if you ask her if she regrets her decision. And she doesn't. She's glad that she survived. She spent so long idealizing a knight's death. But when it came down to it, she was glad that she didn't die mindlessly following the orders of her king. This is especially poignant if you didn't recruit her childhood friends Felix and Sylvain, who did die painfully, never fulfilling their own dreams.
Ingrid: What will happen to Faerghus… to Fódlan, once this battle is over? Byleth: There will be peace. Ingrid: Peace… you say. I don't wish for such grand things. But… I just want a world where people are no longer dragged into conflict and schemes, where there is no suffering, no loss of life. No… I believe it's our duty as survivors to create such a world.
Ingrid experiences very positive character growth when she lets go of her childhood dream to become a knight and finds a new purpose.
Tumblr media
王道 (Ōdō): -王 (Ō) means "king" or "monarch," while 道 (dō) means "way" or "path." -王道 generally refers to the "right" or "proper" way of doing things, often associated with traditional or conventional norms, values, and principles. -It can also refer to the "path of the king" or the ideal path of leadership that embodies virtues such as wisdom, benevolence, and justice. -王道 emphasizes legitimacy, morality, and adherence to established rules and traditions in governance or leadership.
The developers said the CF represented 覇道 (Hadō) and AM represented 王道 (Ōdō). In that case, VW would be somewhere in-between. 王道 emphasizes moral, legitimate, and traditional leadership principles, whereas 覇道 suggests a more aggressive pursuit of dominance, often without regard for moral or ethical considerations. The positive side of AM is that Dimitri eventually does become a benevolent monarch.
Dimitri: Ashe, what do you think a knight is? Ashe: Huh? Someone who risks their life to protect the people, the king, and ultimately, the country…? Dimitri: Indeed… Many say that's what a knight should be… But the reality isn't so beautiful. Ultimately, a knight is someone who kills. The chivalric code preaches loyalty only to control knights and prevent them from betraying their liege.
But the downside is perhaps that it ends too conventionally. AM overall sticks to the "proper" and traditional way of doing things, which Claude was opposed to. And I would say that Claude was opposed to those traditions for good reason.
Tumblr media
Ingrid & Ashe (Non-AM) Ingrid pleaded for the survival of the confiscated Galatea territory and was appointed its new lord. To support her, Ashe headed to Galatea territory. There, he faced the cold gaze of the people directed towards Ingrid, who had once fled from the Galatea family. Ashe supported Ingrid devotedly and worked hand in hand to reform the territory and improve agricultural techniques. Gradually, as people witnessed their efforts, the attitude of the residents softened. Eventually, the two, who had come to love each other, received a grand blessing from the residents and held a simple yet lively wedding ceremony.
I still think that Ashe is a fantastic partner for Ingrid in VW. And from an objective standpoint, I do think that this is a better ending than their AM counterpart. I think that helping Galatea become more fertile would be more fulfilling for both Ingrid and Ashe than becoming knights. But in VW, Ingrid's childhood friend group is pretty much decimated, which is a high price for her to pay.

re: dimilix translation differences, it was mentioned that there were a few changes in the A support (for example, it's clear that it's a piggyback ride in JP), so if you have the time, I would love your thoughts! (apparently the ENG is also much more free with how it switches between idiot and boar, but that feels like a much bigger ask). anyway, thank you again!
Here's an A Support translation, with notes and unnecessary commentary at the end :D (I'll look into the idiot vs boar thing...)
Dimitri / Felix A Support [JP]
ディミトリ:……すまない。必ず復讐は果たす。
だから、もう少し待っていてくれ。
お前たちを死に追いやった者を暴き……
どんな形であれ、必ず果たす。だから……
Dimitri: ......I'm sorry. I promise I’ll get you revenge.
So please, wait just a little while longer.
I’ll expose those who drove you to their deaths...
I promise I'll carry it out, no matter how. So...
フェリクス:おい。
Felix: Hey.
ディミトリ:グレ……いや、フェリクスか。
……見苦しいところを見せたな。
Dimitri: Gle… no, Felix?
… I’m sorry you had to see such a shameful side of me.
Felix: We’ve kept each other company for 20 years.
What could you possibly feel ashamed about after so long? [1]
What were you doing hiding alone in the chapel
even though it’s an hour when everyone’s asleep?
I was wondering what was going on when I heard your voice,
but were you daydreaming or something?
Dimitri: … I guess there’s no point in hiding it from you.
A waking dream… it’s something like that.
Be it day or night, the people who died that day manifest themselves.
If the Empire had anything to do with that incident,
if the emperor consented to it…
… the dead scream for me to give them the same end.
To gouge out their hearts, to break their necks...
フェリクス:いつからだ。
そんなものを見るようになったのは。
Felix: Since when?
When did you start seeing that?
Dimitri: Six years ago… but
I heard the voices four years ago… during the time of our first battle.
I recognized the enemy general’s face.
… I had seen it in Duscur.
When I snapped his neck, everyone raised their voices in laughter.
The same people who had been crying and in pain.
Felix: I don’t support it, but
I guess I do understand. [2]
But do you really think my brother, the late king, and the others
would torture you like this?
The one who isn’t allowing you to live in peace
is none other than you yourself.
ディミトリ:……誰が俺を許すと言おうと、
俺は死ぬまで自分を許すつもりはない。
Dimitri: … Regardless of if anyone were to forgive me,
I have no intention of forgiving myself until the day I die.
Felix: Don’t worry.
I’d never expect you to perform such an impossible feat. [3]
But you’re a king who guides his people.
If you lose your bearings, the people will lose their way, too.
Shut away that intense desire for revenge of yours in your heart.
I should be the only one who knows about it. [4]
ディミトリ:……要するに、弱音を吐くなら
お前の前だけにしろ、ということか?
Dimitri: … in other words, if I feel the need to complain,
I should only do it in front of you, is that right?
フェリクス:フン……。
Felix: Hmph...
Dimitri: … The reason I haven’t degenerated to a beast
is because you accept me like this. [5]
Like Loog had Kyphon,
and like my father had Rodrigue…
I want you to stay by my side
as my right-hand man, Felix.
フェリクス:……右腕、か。
まあ、悪くない響きだ。ならば……
Felix: … Right-hand man, huh.
Well, that doesn’t sound so bad. In that case...
ディミトリ:……!
おいフェリスク、いきなり何を……
Dimitri: …!
Whoa, Felix, what are you...
フェリクス:右腕としての責を果たさせてもらう。
まず、休み方を知らん王を寝台に放り込まねばな。
Felix: Let me fulfill my duty as your right-hand man.
First, I’ll toss this king who doesn’t know how to rest into bed.
ディミトリ:なあ……お前背負って運ぶつもりか?
無茶はするな。足が床についたまま……
Dimitri: Hey… are you going to carry me on your back? [6]
Don’t push yourself. My feet are dragging on the floor...
フェリクス:黙れ、貴様が馬鹿でかく育ったせいだ!
この筋肉の塊め、運びにくいにも程がある。
Felix: Shut up! It’s your fault for growing so stupidly tall!
You idiot muscle-boar. [7] There’s a limit to how hard to carry you can be.
ディミトリ:……昔もこんなことがあったな。
あ時は足を挫いたお前を、俺が運んだ。
Dimitri: … Something like this happened long ago, too.
You had sprained your leg, and I carried you.
フェリクス:ああ、あれは良い訓練になっただろう?
今度は俺の訓練に付き合え、ディミトリ。
Felix: Yeah, and that was good training, wasn’t it?
So go along with my training this time, Dimitri. [8]
ディミトリ:くく……ああ、そうだな。
Dimitri: Heh… yes, alright.
Notes / Comments:
Felix is basically saying it's too late for Dimitri to be feeling embarrassed about any side of himself here. The English version ("After 20 years, I’ve seen all of you there is to see") gets that across well!
This sentence is a little tricky to translate and I can see why the English version just went with "I think I get what’s happening here". 納得はできん has a myriad of interpretations that might make sense, such as "I don't understand", "I can't accept it", "I'm not convinced", "I'm not satisfied (with the explanation)", but it's followed shortly by 腑には落ちた, which basically means "I understand". So this is most likely Felix going "I don't really like it, but I get it". A little more judgmental in Japanese, perhaps?
Felix gets fancy with words about Dimitri having to perform the arduous, extraordinary deed of forgiving himself here. You could read it as being sarcastic, though if so, it doesn't really come across in the voice acting. (In English, this is just "Believe me, I know.")
In English, Felix is a little more tongue-in-cheek about Dimitri keeping his hallucinations to himself ("We can just call it our little secret"), but in Japanese, he goes all in on the "you can only tell me, nobody else". I think Dimitri's response makes a little more sense with that in mind; he's going, "okay, so if I can't tell anyone else ever, are you going to be my therapist? :D?"
I love the English version of this line, though I do have to point out that the Japanese continues Dimitri's trend of disparagingly comparing himself to a beast... I also appreciate that it brings up Felix's acceptance as a key factor of their relationship. It's very sweet!
Yes, the Japanese version confirms that Felix gives Dimitri a piggyback ride here.
Literal translation: "boar of muscle(s) [derogatory]". Yes there is a Japanese particle that just lets you refer to people in a derogatory way (め). [derogatory] is a part of the language
aww he said his name (he doesn't in English!)

Some thoughts I had about the Holy Kingdom, the Alliance, their naming conventions and some timeline things.
So we are familiar with the Empire's name format of First Name von Last Name, and that prior to the founding of the Kingdom, it was the likely standard to naming conventions within Fodlan nobility. Given that Loog I was called out as Loog von Blaiddyd, and that Kyphon was presumably descent from the Fraldarius lineage, it's safe to also assume that Kyphon would be Kyphon von Fraldarius. Following the founding of the Kingdom in Red Wolf Moon, Imperial Year 751 at the end of the War of the Eagle and Lion, it may be established that the naming convention continued to assume a similar format for the subsequent time. The Leicester Rebellion in 801 saw the breakaway of Leicester from Adrestia, and its following assimilation under the Kingdom banner as a protectorate. This would likely have been during the reign of the king after Loog I, or the potential following king who would become predecessor to the reign of Klaus I.
It can be assumed that Klaus I was responsible for implementing that first shift in naming convention within the Kingdom to further distinguish its identity from the Empire and assert sovereign loyalties from its noble houses. This likely makes Banfig, Krouffer and Kite part of the first generation using such a format, placing the beginning several decades before the Crescent Moon War in 881.
This also makes sense timeline wise, given that the Alliance portrays an incomplete switch from the Empire format to the Kingdom format. It suggests that such conventions were not yet standard in the Kingdom at the time of breakaway, that with the formation of the Alliance under their own banner, only some of the houses had already adopted it and would simply continue to use it, and others no longer saw need to conform to Kingdom practices when they were flying their own banner.
We get a bit of a skip in terms of what we are told from this point - nothing too major for about 200 years. However, this encompasses an estimate of 6 to 8 generations during which the convention becomes distinctly standard to the Kingdom, that even minor houses like the Barony of Dominic would conform - hence Gustave being canonically "Gustave Eddie Dominic". The early 1100s (think the first 2 decades or so) would be the reign of Lambert and Rufus' grandfather, and from the late 1130s onward, the reign of Lambert and Rufus' father during which he would serve as squire.
Given that Lambert doesn't become king until the later 1150s - inferred from his time at the Academy in the earlier part of the decade, and that his coronation must have come before Dimitri's birth in 1162, I think it holds up fairly well in the timeline we were presented. Gustave would have been well into his 30s during Lambert's reign, and in his 50s during Rufus' regency, he could definitely have been the one overseeing Dimitri's training and youth between the 1160s and 1170s. Rufus' regency in Houses always ends in 1181, whether by death or otherwise, and Gustave is in his early 60s during the war phase in 1185. Interestingly, Dimitri's own coronation in AM (the only route where he survives the war) being toward the tail end of 1185 is actually quite a gap (30+ years since Lambert's own coronation and almost 10 years since his death, since Rufus is regent rather than King) if we notice how often the monarchy of Faerghus changes hands at about a 20 year interval.
It's fascinating how strongly the timeline holds with a little bit of logical inference, isn't it?

Initial Three Hopes Demo Opinions
Okay so far I've played through the entirety of the Blue Lions demo content (minus supports and extra additional dialogue tidbits). Spoilers ahead.
I really, really, really prefer this plot to the original 3H plot so far. I think Shez joining and becoming a student makes way more sense than Byleth joining and becoming a teacher. I think the story is a lot stronger with just skipping over all of the high school mystery BS and cutting straight to the heart of the actual conflict.
So far at least, Shez is a lot less of an invasive presence in the main plot than Byleth was. they get their moments, but there's also been a lot of content where they've been sidelined/completely excluded from conversation and I find that very refreshing.
Along those lines, I'm surprised Byleth hasn't shown up more yet. They were in the prologue and seem to have completely disappeared from the game after that. I know they'll probably have a bigger role, but whatever that role is... No idea, unless the other routes have more to share.
Shez being fully voice does WONDERS for their believability as a character. My god. The thirty seconds of Byleth content we've gotten has also done more to establish the whole "emotionless, powerful merc" characterization than the entirety of 3H did (the power of showing, not telling)
I picked F!Byleth. It is very hard to take F!Byleth seriously as a threat lmao. She looks so goofy. Really wish they'd given her a different design. Though I suppose there's still a possibility they will get something, since IIRC the trailers all appear to have come from the prologue chapter?
There don't appear to be S supports? On one hand, I'm kind of glad. I know people were expecting them and TBH I'm not really sure why, since this doesn't seem like that kind of story. Of course, they could always come up later in the plot. Who knows. I wonder if there'll be endings too, or if it'll be more like FE:W.
I'm curious to see how the fandom reacts to the rearrangement of support ranks, since several characters now have fewer conversations with other characters than they did before. The demo only appears to let you get up to C rank, so I guess we'll have to see how it's handled when the game comes out fully.
I'm having fun, but there's a lot of mechanics to this game. Like, almost too many. It's just a tad bit cumbersome and I'm probably not going to end up using a few things because I just straight up won't remember that they exist.
PLAYABLE! MOTHERFUCKING! RODRIGUE! Additionally, no playable Gilbert yet. I think IS heard my plea for a trade offer and took it seriously lol.
I also enjoy the worldbuilding tidbits we've gotten so far. One of my biggest issues with the OG 3H was that they gave you so much info... but almost none of it was that interesting or related to the characters or the story. Like, I don't care what year Loog was born, but you damn well better bet I'm interested to hear WTF Dimitri's life was like before he came to the academy! You best BELIEVE I wanna know that Duscur has it's own language!
Dimidue are so gay. So gay. I love them so much. I think I'm going to explode.
Ok that's all I got for now, if I have any more thoughts I'll make sure to scream them to the heavens

AG AU - random Seteth stuff
Being the good host he is, Dimitri heard Seteth's birthday happens on Saint Cichol's Day, and he remembers how Seteth mentionned more than once how Cichol's Treatise on Strategy is very informative and one of the best books about strategy around.
So, even if Seteth might have one copy at the monastery, right now he doesn't have one, right? He found the perfect gift for him!
(also, Lady Rhea assured him he would really appreciate it)
As expected, Seteth was very enthusiastic and thanked him a lot for his thoughtful present. As Rhea didn't expect though, Seteth enjoys collectioning different versions and editions of Cichol's Treatise on Strategy, to check what humans modify with the passing of time and how close they are to his, I mean, Cichol's original version.
Passably annoyed at seeing one of his top strategies being attributed to Saint Macuil ("first he appropriates Indech's achievements and now mine??"), he became really annoyed when some paragraphs mention how Emperor Wilhelm assisted to strategy meetings ("Him?! He always had a hangover or was too busy doing whatever to attend strategy meetings, and always sent his Vestra!")
He became Big Mad (tm) at Rhea ("it wasn't me? Why would ever edit your boring books?") but then Cyril asked him - unaware that it was his birthday - if he could train him with the lance.
Indeed, after talking to Catherine about his problem - aka Rhea not really wanting him to fight because it's too dangerous and he might die - Catherine told him, as if it was the most natural thing in the world, to train to become stronger, duh. So he won't die, and Lady Rhea won't be upset!
Baffled by this "logic", Seteth first wants to refuse, but Cyril insisted. Well, Seteth says he isn't using a lance right now, because the Kingdom needs more axe users, but if he wants, he can try with the young knights under Gilbert's tutelage? He's sure Gilbert will accept to teach Cyril.
"But Lady Rhea said you're the strongest fighter she knows!"
Moved by this declaration, and knowing very well his wyrm of a sister would rather burn her ridiculous hat that say this to his face, he relents and accepts.
Later that day, he meets her and pats her head - like he used to when she was still the sister who found everything he did awesome, and pestered him to have him read her a bedtime story. Rhea smiles, unnerved, and refrains from calling him senile now that he is older.
Meeting with Flayn and her friends, Seteth dreads to eat the cake she most likely made for him today, but thanks to "her friends", it was actually edible, and he thanks, in private, Dedue for helping arrange this "party".
He receives a new quill, a special edition of "Loog and the Maiden of Wind" but the non-racy one, courtesy of Ashe who managed to find one after Flayn told him what Seteth enjoys in his books, a new fishing rod, a dagger from one of his admirers, and a Zanado Fruit (to which Ingrid wondered who put that thing here? It's inedible!).
Thanking everyone for the party, knowing well it was complicated to pull off given the actual context and the on-going war, he returns to his quarters not before patting Rhea's head once again to thank her for the Zanado Fruit - because she can't do anything today it's his birthday, even if he knows she will have her revenge in two weeks.
Rodrigue, who observed that scene from afar wonders, are they siblings or something?

Hello hello! Can I ask about Outside POV?
This is a bunch of little shorts about other people observing Dimitri and Byleth's relationship over the years, mix of pre and post skip. It's more fluff than plot, I haven't even decided if they're all in the same timeline etc. Because I'd rather keep them cute and short than trying to form some overarching story 💙 I had titled it "eyes of the lions" but then I got all excited and added non blue lion people lol
This man is hopeless, Sylvain thought. Dimitri had just given him an account of the previous night's events-- Byleth catching him at the last second to stop his reckless quest, her heartfelt plea for him to live for himself, how she offered a hand to lead him back into the light. It even happened in the rain, for the Goddess' sake. The smutty novel about Loog that Ashe had hidden under his bed was more subtle. "...And?" asked Sylvain. Dimitri looked puzzled, but said, "And we went to her room to dry off." "...And?" Sylvain pressed, near hysterical at this point. "And I slept on the floor next to her bed." "And nothing happened?" "Well..." Here we go. Finally. "She did hold my hand until I fell asleep," the prince said sheepishly, face scarlet. A strangled wail escaped Sylvain. She held his hand. Dimitri-- a future king, a man who had singlehandedly killed so many imperial soldiers that locals were already writing legends about the One-Eyed Demon -- was red up to his ears over some hand holding. "I don't mean to be disrespectful, Your Highness, but what the hell is wrong with you?" Dimitri looked at him, genuinely bewildered why he was being scolded. Seiros' fucking tits, this is worse than he thought. "Your Highness. Dimitri. Why didn't you kiss her?"
