Thomas bullied Michael for the same reason I think everyones masked brothers bullied their crying child. Attention, approval, troubled kid syndrome. Thomas had anger issues, all of the Afton kids do. And suddenly Thomas is left without a mother, and his father no longer pays attention to him anymore because he has a fancy new wife and a fancy new set of twins, and you're left in the dust to beg for scraps of attention and love. Since the divorce, and since Mrs Afton passed, it seems like William can only see bad in Thomas. Bad grades, bad behavior, bad friends, bad interests, bad goals, bad dreams, bad behaviors, bad bad bad.

A kid can only be told they're bad so many times before they start believing it-- and acting bad. Both Elizabeth and Michael were easy targets, both were smaller than him, and both were significantly... sickly? Unwell? In a way he and his dad weren't. It got him quick attention to pinch them, or smack Michael on the back of his head, or yank Elizabeths hair. Elizabeth got scary fast, though. Elizabeth was ready to fight back the moment she was able to, in the ways she could. Baby finger nails scratch hard! Thomas lost interest in her pretty fast, and actually, Elizabeth, after getting a bit older, tended to join in on picking on Michael. The only difference though is she'd never get caught, of course not. She was Wills favorite.

It was never out of malice. Thomas wasn't consciously thinking about how much pain he was bringing to either of them, not until Michael nearly died, and Thomas was taken away from the home entirely.

yes! Michael is the crying child. I like interpreting him as such, it makes me happy. I also like interpreting Michael as disabled/brain damaged as an adult. I do the same for Jeremy, I prefer to interpret both Jeremy's as the same person, just disabled.

The masked brother is Michael's older half brother! I call him Thomas, but I think "Evan" could fit him perfectly fine too. Thomas is from Williams first fiance, and his "failed" attempt at being a family man. I personally believe that William absolutely lives for attention and praise, as well as being a mirror image to Henry. William wanted the image of a wholesome family man, and his best friend (boytoy) had just started talking about wanting a kid, which was no surprise. Henry has always been a bit baby crazy. Will was quick on the uptake to find a girlfriend to pair up with, and suggest that he and Henry time their children together, so they could grow up to be friends too.

Thomas's mother was extremely childish, she left Will only a couple years after Thomas's birth. A year after William met Mrs. Afton. He wasn't all that heart broken, but when she came for his reputation as a father, he cut her out completely. He was able to get Thomas to turn against her, speak against her in court. She lost custody, and didn't hear from the two until Michaels accident.
