The ice cream was gone by the time they reached the bridge.

“It wasn’t bad,” he said, tossing the end of the cone into a bush they were passing. She was more stable now, and he enjoyed the roll of her eyes a little more than he probably should have. He was half-expecting her to comment on his littering, though the cups André served his infamous ice cream in were edible. If some creature didn’t gobble it up first, it would decompose soon enough. “I’ve had better, though,”

“You realize you just brought us back to the river, right?” she asked instead of answering, looking around. She turned back to him with a frown. “I thought we were going home, Luka.”

“We will,” he said, reaching out for her hand. She hesitated, and when her hand fisted at her side he sighed and shoved his back in his pockets. “I wanted to show you something first.”
