I know that this might be considered impolite, but there's like six days left to reach the milestone and I'm excited and desperate.
Go subscribe to Quinton Reviews on YouTube so that we get videos analyzing Zoey101 and Drake and Josh
The numbers will be rounded up or down to the nearest half
If you don't know who this is, you mightve heard someone mention an 8 hour long video about victorious or iCarly, and he's that guy.
He's made a four hour video about the popularity and fall of Fred Figglehorn, he's made two videos about iCarly at 5 hours and 3.5 hours respectively, he's made two Victorious videos at 5.5 hours and 8 hours each, and three Sam and Cat videos at 5, 6.5, and 9.5 each.
If he reaches a million (I believe by the end of 2023), he will make videos about Drake and Josh and Zoey101.
So if you will... please.
He makes more than just that btw, he has other stuff. I really liked his videos about the bee movie and slenderman. He just gets and deserves a lot of credit for his nickelodeon projects
I'm tagging Starkid stuff because guess what? He's talking about Henry Danger in the newest Sam and Cat video. And as you might know, there's a character named Tim Jerkowski played by Joey Richter in it. And Quinton has mentioned him, so I'm now legally allowed to tag starkid stuff.
Please don't get mad at me for tagging that stuff because of such a small mention, I'm just very excited about all this stuff, and it already seems like starkid fans would enjoy his videos. They're very indepth and interesting and I love even learning about the shows that I've never watched, like Henry Danger or Game Shakers. I've never watched anything Fred Figglehorn related, but his video The Reign of Fred Figglehorn is probably one of my favourites. So, even if you haven't seen Victorious or iCarly or Sam and Cat, you can still enjoy his Nickelodeon series.
I will say, as a side note, I think that the nerds from npmd would enjoy these videos and offhandedly suggest them to Steph, and she'd always be like '9 hours? Nah fam.' And then she'd watch them and run to Pete, Richie and Ruth and say that they were really good and interesting.

Last year I wrote a ton of essays/reviews on movies and art that I never did anything more with because I was putting myself into a box creatively and was trying to limit myself to only one type of video and the things I was writing didn’t always fall into that box. In this process last year I had the idea what if I treated my videos like a zine? And just make videos where I can talk about a few different things all tied around a theme, and the idea sat in the back of my mind for a long time, until now. Welcome to the first issue of my digital zine (idk if that’s a good title for this video series if you have thoughts or suggestions on what to call these I’m open to it lol) I’m hoping to do one issue a month, I want to use these videos to talk about art I love, to share my thoughts and feelings and to showcase some of the music I’ve been working on.
It’s now up on YouTube and you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgsD7TKyfgE&ab_channel=ghost_texture

Metal to the masses!
LAST UPDATED: Feb 15 2023
Ave! Here's a list of various links to all things heavy metal. Doesn't matter if you're just getting into the genre and feeling totally lost, looking for something new to expand your already fvking brvtal taste, or seeking to win a debate under a Facebook post - this post is for you! (I'm by no means an expert, but I do try.)
Archives, music-sharing platforms and news outlets:
Encyclopaedia Metallum - If you want to own someone in an online argument, this is the place to go. Everything on every band, album and genre. When I say "every band", I mean it - even my local thrash outfit with 40 listeners on Spotify have their page. If you create your own account, you can add more pages to the Metal Archive, write reviews, browse forums, et cetera. Just don't fuck around and the mods will leave you be.
Kuttengallerie - A huge gallery of various battle vests and battle jackets, mostly from the 2000s and early 2010s. They're even sorted alphabetically. If you're looking for ideas or references, head on in. It's also part of a larger online forum, which is sadly mostly inactive. (This one's in German, but Google Translate exists, guys. Also, shout-out to my brother in metal Blues for showing me this!)
Rate Your Music - Not exclusive to metal, but you can create lists, rate music (like the name suggests), write reviews, et cetera. Good way to discover new things.
AngryMetalGuy - Funny, scathing, high-quality. One of the most prominent metal blogs. Bonus points from me because TheKenWord is a fan of Artificial Brain. (Big thanks to @dropdeadjack for this suggestion - and many others!)
Bandcamp - You can buy digital tracks, albums, even merchandise. Oftentimes it's "name your price", so look out for bargains. Bandcamp charges very low fees - it pays artists way more than most other platforms do. Also, it has curated collections.
Soundcloud - Good for uploading your own things, as well as finding others' stuff. A sort of alternative to Spotify/Apple Music/et cetera.
Loudwire - Mostly big news and sensations (picture Slipknot's beef with MGK); not a valuable source of information but it is funny sometimes and keeps you up-to-date with the talk of the town. Things like reunions, break-ups, new albums; rock and metal alike.
Metalsucks - Also lighthearted, but seems to be more respected in the metal community itself. Again, keeps you up to date.
Metal Injection - Another fairly reliable metal news outlet.
Documentaries, movies, YouTube channels:
Metal Evolution - Really well-made, high-quality series, but I've only watched part of it myself. By metalheads and for metalheads. Here are links to some episodes: Extreme Metal, Pre-Metal, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, Early Metal, Glam Metal.
Banger TV - Hosted by Sam Dunn, the guy who did the Metal Evolution documentary. Lots of interviews, reviews, tips; hell, even a comedy series (Heavy Metal Hitchhiker). They've also started a podcast, apparently.
Heavy: The Story of Metal - Not my favorite, but it does get the point across. Here's a link to episode 4 - Seek & Destroy. You can probably find the rest of the episodes on YouTube.
Heavy Metal Democracy Project - Banger TV strikes yet again. This playlist has videos such as "How to get into death metal", "How to get into thrash metal", so on and so forth.
Festivals:
Wacken Open Air - Germany. Considered by most to be the largest one in Europe.
Hellfest - France. Also a contender to Wacken's title.
Download - UK. The Donington Park one. Not metal-exclusive, one of the biggest festivals in the world. See also: Download Australia and Download Japan.
Bloodstock Open Air - UK.
Maryland Deathfest - US. As the name suggest, mostly death metal.
Louder Than Life - US. Possibly the biggest festival in America.
Aftershock - US. Rock and metal.
Ozzfest - Touring. Put Osborne back on the map.
Knotfest - Touring. Founded by Slipknot.
Summer Breeze - Germany.
Mystic Festival - Poland. Biased because I've been there.
Sweden Rock Festival - Sweden (lol). (Not listing all the Scandinavian ones because we'd be here all day.)
Metaldays - Slovenia. Biased because I almost was there.
Brutal Assault - Czech Republic.
Tuska Open Air - Finland.
Copenhell - Denmark.
Hell & Heaven - Mexico.
Rock al Parque - Colombia. One of the biggest in Latin America.
Hellprint - Indonesia.
Bangalore Open Air - India.
Other:
Guitar Hero - If you've followed me for a while, you'll know that I love that retro mess of a game. Here are downloadable versions of World Tour and Guitar Hero III.
Louder Than Hell - An oral history of metal by Katherine Turman and John Wiederhorn. Interviews with all the big names - hundreds of 'em. (Thanks @gia-is-a-punk-rocker for this one!)

week 1 of studying chinese everyday in january
so ive (kinda) started over with mandarin to learn traditional characters rather than simplified, which is what i learned in the CHN101 course at my community college
this is because i’ll hopefully be studying in taiwan over the summer and that is where most of my interest is plus traditional should somewhat help with japanese as well as if i wanna learn cantonese in the future
i didnt record what i did daily so heres a summary so far
- have gotten an okay handle on zhuyin, just need practice and to learn where each character is on apples zhuyin keyboard since the site i used to learn used something else. i do like the concept more than pinyin but some of the final combinations confuse me (more on that another day)
- started reviewing my integrated chinese textbook as thats what both my old and current college use as their class resources. i bought the fluencylink (e-learning) account this time instead of the physical textbook and i looove it, its interactive, contains all the audio/video to go along and gives immediate grades on each section you complete. i did buy the physical workbook just to have in class though.
- have been taking some online classes through LTL and despite signing up/paying for group classes every class ive taken so far has just been 1 on 1 (i take them at like 3 am so i guess other people just dont sign up for those times) and have been enjoying it! online classes and tutors have made me anxious in the past and prior to this my online mandarin teachers almost never corrected my tones which i hated but these are great! i definitely feel like my pronunciation has improved but i still have to work a lot on sentence flow and tone sandhi/combinations.
- scouring the internet for taiwanese shows/movies/youtubers etc to get a feel for the accent differences and just for some listening practice (if you have recommendations lmk)
- also been going crazy looking for apps and sites that offer traditional characters as most are made for simplified/standard mandarin. i have a few that i like so far but hope to find more. i like to have a textbook to guide me through and give me structure but also various other resources to learn things that interest me or that i’ll actually talk about in daily conversation.
overall feeling pretty good and pretty excited to finally get back to studying languages and traveling.
oh and!!! i have mostly finalized what my chinese name is with the help of the teachers i’ve had so far, hence the username change as well and it is … 昕霓 ! (xīnní) i havent chosen a last name tho as im not sure if i need one atm but if anyone has ideas as to what would sound good im open to suggestions.
if anyone would want it im more than happy to post what resources ive been using, and/or what media ive been watching/liking that use traditional characters since its definitely been a little more challenging to find it all. lmk !!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I've enjoyed your book reviews on YouTube for the past six or so months (finished The Blessed/Precious Blood a couple hours ago), and they've gotten me a little curious. To my understanding, you do or at least did post book reviews on your blog, some or all of which you went on to turn into videos. As someone who wishes to try his hand at writing book reviews, I was wondering if you had any advice, insights, or sage wisdom into the craft based on your experience. I understand if you'd prefer not to answer, and my apologies if this is something you've already been asked.
Thank you very much for reading, and I hope life treats you well!
I've talked about it a bit before, but only briefly when drunk. It's very annoying on tumblr to search archives anyway. This was the breadth of my advice:
"When I first started, my strategy was a very solid one: divide and conquer. It can be hard to understand your thoughts on a book until you understand it in parts. I usually did it as : premise, plot, characters, writing, other details. Dividing into sections can help put words to feelings you may struggle with. Earlier reviews usually fell into this format, ish. Nowadays I usually put it mostly into a plot summary, discussing issues as they come u— I find this smoother. But really, making sections is incredibly helpful and can really assist in finding your “voice”."
I've been writing reviews for several years now. Like since 2016 actually, I did it first formally as an assignment for uni and was previously writing shorter reviews on goodreads because with my memory issues, I would find I totally forgot half the details of what I read a few months later. This was especially annoying for series!
Reading reviews is a first good step. You don't have to take notes- it's just helpful to read how other people review things, in general. You'll naturally notice stuff you wish they talked about more or where your opinions might differ- it's good to read reviews of stuff you have experience with and don't.
I'd definitely suggest reading say, a negative review of a movie you love and a positive review of a movie you hate. Or book, or whatever. See how the argument is made and where you think the reviewer is being an idiot. See where you wish they went into more detail or where they were caught up on something pointless. I think it can be way more helpful than just reading opinions you agree with!
But also do that. And try different formats and people- I used to read a LOT of AVclub reviews for tv shows and movies I never watched, and reading different styles of review helps.
Honestly, it might be good to even look at my early reviews versus recent and see how I've grown! Even though I normally don't really advocate my oldest stuff as it's just. not as good. But check out Relic and then The Commandment and you might notice some stuff in how I've improved.
It's not just studying though. The best method is really just getting started. When you read/watch/play/whatever something, review it. Start with a skeleton (Plot, characters, world) and get better at linking each subject fluidly. Finding an easy transition is hard but great practice for thinking about something as a whole. Reread your reviews, not just before posting but a few months after the fact.
A lot of my own style is based purely on what I'd most value in a review and I'd suggest you center your work on a similar concept. I wanted long, very detailed reviews that spoiled all the ridiculous twists of books I was never going to read. Not enough people provided that, so I did it myself.
Anyway hope it helps!

more revalink hcs from this post part 4
previous revalink hcs here: x x x
full disclosure i rearranged and took out some of the questions around because a handful of them were related to cooking/eating and it's like. what else can i say other than link is disaster gay who can cook and revali is disaster gay who can drive
who’s the first to wake up in the morning
if you've read the sleepy link x coddler revali fic, you know what's up but here's a quick recap:
at first it was link because of his insomnia, hypervigilance, or his nightmares, and it would end up waking revali up too, because revali is a light sleeper
but gradually, link relearns how to sleep in again, comforted by the warmth and steadiness of revali's embrace, and now revali is the one who wakes up first by default and he stays in bed with link cuddled up on his chest, admiring how soft and peaceful his beloved songbird is <3
who’s the one to make breakfast:
revali is the type of person who doesn't eat breakfast because he can't stomach food that early in the morning (i'm projecting again) and him and link wake up pretty early as per the previous concept
but link always makes him eat a little bit because he's a firm believer that breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
(in the future, link is the type to cook a big meal for every mealtime to sit down and eat with revali and their babies, because food is his love language 🥹)
who orders lunch
if link isn't around to make his food, it's revali
bitch would be living on that hellofresh shit if it weren't for link making their food all the time
could you imagine youtuber!revali doing a hellofresh sponsor
"yes, well, i suppose i should offer the proper gratitude for the sponsor of today's video, hellofresh. without my boyfriend or you, i might have starved to death and left the world one less god for its mortals to walk with."
who steals food from the other’s plate without asking
link LMFAO he's just a hungry little guy
"link, you have your own plate with twice the amount of servings on it."
"i cooked the food, i can eat whatever i want even if it's on your plate!"
revali is so soft for him though, he'll let link eat as much as he wants
revalink but they're the yoonkook moment where yoongi says watching jungkook eat makes him feel full
who cleans up the kitchen afterwards
revali cleans because he feels bad that he is a disaster in the kitchen and cannot help whatsoever during the actual creation of the meals; he is not allowed near the cooking pot 👍
will straight up snatch the plates from link's hands and insists on cleaning and link will smile at him fondly as revali aggressively scrubs the dishes
who curls up next to the other and falls asleep due to a full tummy
link for sure because he eats so fast and so much
revali will roll his eyes but continue eating as link snuggles into his lap for a quick food-induced power nap because revali will still make him get up to go take a shower and get ready for bed properly
who would suggest a quickie in the morning before work
LINK LMFAO WHO ELSE
he's already straddling revali's lap before revali can even register what link just said and then— oop. revali is going to be 30 minutes late to work now
who suggests they both ditch work to lay around all day
neither of them would actually because they both have really strong self-discipline
they only suggest ditching when they notice the other being really tired or burnt out, and then suddenly link is at the receptionist's desk at revali's workplace demanding they let revali go home early like he's a parent pulling their kid out of class for an appointment
who chooses the movies
revali hands down
he's the type of guy who took theatre, film history, movie analysis, and all those kinds of classes as general eds in college
he has a letterboxd account where he frequently updates his list of watched movies and heavily critical reviews. he's amassed a small cult following there because of how out of pocket-ly mean his reviews are 😭 to the point where people start using his reviews as memes KDJFHKDJHF
link is one of the people who use it as a meme and is the one that tells revali that he's a internet microcelebrity now. revali facepalms (but secretly his ego has been stroked)
who initiates kissing during the movie, thus distracting the other from the movie all together
both of them HAHA
it's mostly link, but if link chose the movie and revali's not into it, he'll start slowly making moves on link KJDHFKJD
"come on link, is the movie really more interesting than me~?"
"shh revali, singing killed his grandma 🥺🥺🥺🥺" KJDHFKDHFKDJHFKDJ
who distracts the other from trying to work at home
mostly link because he gets pretty needy
revali does it more often than you would expect though, they're almost equally very needy and clingy to each other
link just keeps barging into revali's office to the point where revali has to lock the door
then link is just sliding down to the floor against the door screaming the lyrics to Gotta go my own way from High school musical until revali unlocks the door again and begrudgingly lets link sit on his lap while he works
if it's revali, he will straight up just pick link up from his work even if link complains, carries link to their room to flop link on the bed, lie down on top of him, and then cuddle ❤️
who asks to go get ice cream like a five year old
it's absolutely link
if revali says no, link books it after the ice cream truck with revali yelling and running after him
revali pays for link's fucked up spongebob popsicle though 🥺 and link makes him get a fucked up patrick popsicle to match
revali also the type to be like "we have ice cream at home" only for link to respond with "nuh uh i ate it all"
revali: what? we had like 2 huge buckets of ice cream in the freezer. what do you mean you ate it all
link: 🥺
who takes pictures of their partner eating ice cream
revali. link made him take like 30 pics and post at least one on his instagram story
(revali keeps the other 29 pictures of link though in his folder of cute link pics to look at later)
who makes a sexual joke about the dripping ice cream on their partner’s face
you're not gonna believe this but it's revali
it slipped out he didn't actually mean to say it out loud
but link stares at him with wide eyes and mouth agape, then suddenly downs the rest of his ice cream, and then starts dragging revali home so he can jump him in the bedroom
link is just 😭 a horny little creature idk how revali keeps up with him
who stays up until 2 reading
it's revali, you know damn well he got those reading glasses and one of those lamps you clip onto the back of the book
he tried leaving the whole room light on at first but link was like i sleep in here too dickhead Close the damn light
the book-clip lamp was actually a gift from link because he did Not want revali to be contributing even more to their electricity bill
link has tried to join in but he's such a sleepy little guy he falls asleep with the book on his face and he felt bad (revali didn't really care but link was nearly gonna cry from being so guilty)
so instead, revali will read some of his own book aloud to link to make him feel involved until link falls asleep to his voice and also clinging to revali's side
who stares at their partner while their sleeping
revali of course but he doesn't do it in the creepy twilight edward way
when revali notices that link has fallen asleep to his reading, he'll put his bookmark in and set the book on the table to comb his fingers through link's hair
he just stares fondly at link, wondering how he was blessed to have a gift of a person like link because revali thinks of himself as a difficult person to love. how does link put up with him? why did link choose to stay with him? i guess he'll never know
(that's a lie; revali voiced these insecurities to him once and link got so mad he yelled at revali about how much he loved him and why, then locked himself in the office for the rest of the night only for revali to wake up the next morning to an entire powerpoint presentation from link on why revali is the most lovable person in the world)
who kisses their partner while they sleep
also revali but not in the creepy sleeping beauty way
revali is a big fan of forehead kisses especially because he's taller than link so he often likes to pull link closer and kiss his forehead before they leave for work or something
and he does the same as he's gazing upon link's sleeping face, wondering how he was blessed to have such an angel of a human being for a lover
revali will cup link's face with one hand and start with one kiss on link's forehead, a second one on his nose, and the last one being a very soft, chaste kiss on his lips 🤍 he's just so soft for link y'all 😭🥹
one time link woke up during the second kiss but didn't open his eyes until revali kissed him on the mouth, and then immediately pushed revali onto the bed to kiss him back harder. like i said 😭 horny little creacher

March 29 - 30, 2024 - I Don't Even Like This Character (Home on the Range 20th Anniversary):
Okay, well, that's not entirely true.
It's more that I don't like the person who voices her (who I won't name because I don't care).
That's pretty much I wanted to have my voice unchanged, with the exception being the fact that becoming a cow always leads me to put on a Southern accent.
I mean, I ain't complainin'. Maggie's original VA could barely do a Southern accent herself. I can easily pull it off, no sweat!
As for Maggie herself, I don't know too much about her. I'm postin' this before I watch Home on the Range in full (probably not gonna like it because I've heard it's really dumb and stupid).
I do really like her design, though, I look mighty fine!
Not sure about this pointy chest though, no idea what that's s'posed to be...
Now, I'm sure some of y'all have some questions about this, so let's just get 'em outta the way.
Q: Where is this located? A: On a farm, I booked a vacation to this farm a few weeks ago.
Q: Why'd ya do all this? A: Someone paid me to watch the movie. And besides, with that film, I'm probably not gonna have much fun reviewing it, so spending time on a farm as a cow is just what I need to actually have fun during my time here.
(Hey guys, IRL Davis here. For context, in this canon of mine, I have a Youtube channel with a slightly large following (only a few thousand subscribers). On the channel, I usually like to talk about whatever's on my mind (unless it involves politics, I don't like talking about politics). However, then there's my Patreon (again this isn't real), where people can pay me and request things for me to review)
(About a month for 2 before this TF sequence, someone patrons me to review Home on the Range for its 20th anniversary, and they want me to do something big (they don't specify). However, I, knowing how dull and boring the movie is considered by critics, need to think outside the box for this)
(So, I decide to ask the TF crew to book me a vacation at a farm, wanting to review the movie while there. I ask if I could spend my time there as a cow myself, and they suggest turning into one of the characters from the movie. I choose Maggie because even though I don't like her VA, her large size was something I could possibly get a kick out of. Of course, I ask for my voice to not be changed too much, which they understand)
(Why the vacation? Well, like I said, with how dull the movie is, I have to think of other methods in order to fulfill the patron's request. Plus, the farm we book is very nice. I have a nice place to sleep and everything. Unfortunately, none of the other animals seem to like me)
(Okay, back to the actual text)
Q: Why'd ya make Maggie's hair longer in the front? A: Personal preference.
Q: Why the 'erect teats'? A: Personal preference.
Q: If ya don't like Maggie's VA, why'd ya wanna change into her. A: I like being large, that's all.
Q: With the teats and the sweat, I have to ask. Were ya sweaty or horny durin' this sequence? A: Both; surprised you didn't get that from the teats, which are CLEARLY looking hardened as if they're small d***s. Since I'm a female, and therefore don't have a certain male appendage, having my teats become erect when I'm horny makes up for it; and it feels just as glorious... *giggle*
"Maggie, what are ya doin' with your udder? You ain't done yet."
Wait, wha? Oh, erm... sorry... Where were we?
Q: What else are you doing on the farm besides watching the movie? A: I'm prolly gon look at some other things related to Home on the Range, like that one video game they made. Not gon play 'em myself, of course 'cause... Y'know, no thumbs.
Q: Were you told to use a new name when you became a cow? Some farms do that to people. A: Yes, that's true. For some reason, they tried to name me themselves. Tried namin' me 'Bessie', which is dumb because...
That name's too obvious. I feel like I hear people use that darn name for cows way too often.
This cow body is based on a pre-existing character, and she already has a name of her own.
Q: Are you typing this post yourself? A: No, I literally just told ya that I don't have thumbs. A human is doin' it for me.
Right, I think that's everything I wanted to say. See ya!

Your dissertation on gil has gotten me fully into the monster high lore! I didn't know there was so much! I'm so excited! Any suggested reading or YouTube videos other than the actual series themselves?
Thank you so much! My blood, sweat and tears went into that Gil Dissertation. I am so happy you found it useful!
Monster High has some good lore if you know where to look! but the continuity on said lore is kinda... iffy. it's almost like the different departments of Mattel working on Monster High weren't allowed to talk to each other.
If you want to start the Web-series the best place to start is with A New Ghoul @ School this is canonically the beginning of the series, once you watch this the webisodes will make more sense considering Volume 1 just starts with everybody already knowing each other.
Reading for good juicy Monster High lore is the Diaries the dolls come with. these diaries give context to the characters and their interpersonal relationships like nothing else can. They are absolutely required reading for you to better understand the Monster High Universe. Thankfully the fan wiki has all of the diaries on record so you don't actually have to own the dolls to read the diaries.
If you're going to watch the movies make sure to watch them in the correct order. Wikipedia has the correct order. I specify this because when these movies came out? Friday Night Frights and Ghouls Rule got released in the wrong order. so a lot of us were watching Ghouls Rule wondering who some of these characters were meanwhile Friday Night Frights was introducing characters we already knew... it was a confusing time to be a Monster high fan.
I also consume Monster High Media pretty indiscriminately. I've played most of the Video Games I've read a fair amount of the Monster High magazines I've had the calender's for like 4 years I watched the anime. However because a lot of these things are made by third party distributors their factual information may not always be spot on so consume at your own risk. Still a good time tough.
Part of me wants to tell you to just skip gen 2 entirely. but that would be disingenuous, it wasn't ALL bad. The 2 CGI Movies, Welcome to Monster High and Electrified are pretty good as far as animation goes... as for the plot...eeeeh.... I've reviewed them both you can watch them yourself and see if I was fair. But they are still worth watching because they gave us Moanica D'Kay one of our most complex and threatening villains to date.

Skinamarink Review
Listen here
Last month, I saw this trailer that really freaked me out on YouTube.
And so I became obsessed with seeing this film because if a trailer can freak me out, then the movie has to be scary, right? Right?
As it turns out… no. No it’s not.
So the film I’m talking about today is Skinamarink. An indie film distributed by IFC Midnight and written and directed by Kyle Edward Bell. It was released on January 13th in theaters and then released on Shudder on February 2nd. I watched it on February 2nd and… it’s a movie!
Now, I don’t want this to be me lambasting this movie and mocking something that is genuinely very creative. I know that the channel Wendigoon did a break down video about it. I haven’t watched it yet because I didn’t wanna do this review and spend time focusing on trying to understand the plot. I feel like the whole point of this movie is to see a very creatively done film. The only thing is that… it wasn’t very scary. But… that isn’t necessarily a bad thing!
So this blog won’t be spoiler free. It’ll be divided into two parts. Part one will be me breaking down as many scenes as I can to recap the main storyline. Part two will be reviewing the movie overall. I feel like this whole movie is an experience and it’s an experience I suggest you see for yourself so if you don’t want any spoilers, this would be the time to leave and come back when you’ve seen the film. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Part One: Where are the doors…?
So, I’m going to try and talk about as much of this movie as I can from memory. If I mess up some details, I apologize. But for now, let’s talk about the plot of Skinamarink.
There are only five characters in this film. Technically, there’s only four, but I’m counting the entity as a character as well. The film centers around a mom and dad - named Mom and Dad in the movie - and their two kids Kaylee and Kevin. It starts out with Kevin apparently falling down the stairs during a game of hide and seek with his sister. Dad takes him to the hospital and then comes back to inform Mom that he needed stitches.
The film then switches to Kaylee and Kevin waking up and realizing that there are no windows or doors in their house anymore and their father is missing. They decide to sleep downstairs because something weird is going on with Mom. We can hear crying, but we don’t yet know what that is. The kids start trying to figure out what’s going on, especially once their toilet disappears from the bathroom. There’s all sorts of strange noises and happenings in the house, including a chair and lamp on the ceiling and toys sticking to the walls.
Kaylee hears someone call her name and tell her to come upstairs to which she obliges. Dad is sitting on the bed and asks her to look under it. She says she cannot see what’s down there. Dad asks her to look again and still we don’t see anything underneath. When she looks back up, Mom is now sitting on the other side of the bed while Dad is gone. Mom tells her to close her eyes and when Kaylee opens them, Mom is gone. “Mom” then tells Kaylee to go back downstairs, but she doesn’t listen. We get a very faint glimpse of the entity before it screeches and we’re back downstairs with Kevin.
Kaylee returns from her journey upstairs and asks Kevin to help her move the couch, presumably to keep whatever was upstairs from getting to them. They move the couch, but Kaylee is never the same. Kevin tries to get her to tell him what happened, but she’s unwilling to share. Eventually, Kaylee disappears entirely, leaving Kevin alone in the house with the entity.
The entity eventually beckons Kevin down the stairs to the basement and it’s here we get one of the best scares in the entire movie. As he’s downstairs, he hears Kaylee calling to him and saying she doesn’t feel well. The camera pans around and we see her sitting on the ground before a sharp cut to her face. This is the only time we see anyone’s face full on in the entire film and it is chilling. Kaylee has no mouth and no eyes. It lingers on the shot for a bit before switching back to Kevin in the living room.
From this point on, the entity tries to get Kevin’s attention to “play” with him. Messing with toys and even talking to him. It then convinces Kevin to stab himself in the eye with a knife to which he does.
Injured, sick, alone, and scared, we hear Kevin crying as we see blood on the wall from his eye. He makes his way to the phone and calls 911. He tells the operator that he hurt himself and he feels sick, going on to explain the strange things happening to him. He tells them he’s alone, he’s hurt, and there are no windows or doors in his house. The operator eventually goes silent and the flashlight in Kevin’s hand drops, revealing that the phone has been turned into a toy phone with a taunting smile. Kevin finally directly addresses the entity by saying, “you did that.” That’s when it explains that it's done everything, including taking Kaylee’s mouth because she didn’t follow instructions - which were to go downstairs.
From here, the movie seems to devolve into an even trippier nightmare. Kevin is asked to go upstairs, to which he does. Upstairs we see things have changed. Our view is as if we’re hanging from the ceiling. We view the house as a dollhouse with the strange, cartoonish music continuing to play over the shots. We see blood splatter on the ceiling and hear the cries of each child, insinuating that they - and their parents - are more than likely dead now. The film ends with a flashlight lighting up random parts of the house, including that horrifying looking toy phone which lets out a deafening ring as its face distorts. Each flash showing you how the house ended up in the aftermath of the events we just witnessed before gracing you with a title card that says, “The End.”
Part Two: What is this movie…?
I’m not going to try and explain what I think this movie means. If you want an explanation, you’ll have to go elsewhere for that. This is a review blog. I will say, this movie was very, very unique. There are things I liked about it. So, let me explain my thoughts about Skinamarink.
First off, I feel like I would’ve liked this movie better if I’d seen it in theaters. When I watched the film, I was sick, I wasn’t in the best mindset, and it was dark and rainy so… to be honest, I fell asleep at one part. I don’t feel like I missed anything pivotal, but this movie is so quiet. It really requires you to focus. Without seeing the characters fully and a ton of dialogue, you’re basically meant to watch the screen to get an idea of the story and that’s hard to do when you’re sick and physically tired. So, while this film is still out in theaters, I urge you to watch it there instead of on Shudder.
Second, I will say, this film felt like a YouTube video and I mean this in the best way possible. Let me explain. Analog horror has been a big thing in the last few years with the Mandela Catalogue and the Walten Files on YouTube rising to prominence. These are well done videos with scary imagery and oftentimes a story where you have to pay attention, read between the lines, and sometimes, watch a video of someone explaining the plot to you. Skinamarink hit all those beats. It was eerie, it was vague, and it left me wondering what I just watched. It’s one of those films where I actually want to see more and would love a sequel in the same style with maybe a bit more story given.
However, I can see why this movie doesn't work for everyone. Mainly by the way it’s filmed. We really only see glimpses of our characters throughout the movie and the only face we do see full on is Kaylee’s where she’s missing her eyes and mouth. There aren’t many moving shots. A lot of them focus on one corner of a room, a light from the tv, a toy on the ground, or even just the wall or ceiling. We never really see our characters so, as such, we don’t get attached to them. That doesn’t mean that it’s not horrifying to see Kaylee missing her human features from her face or seeing the bloody aftermath of Kevin stabbing his eye out at the entity’s request, but it’s hard to get a visceral reaction out of viewers when the characters are not fleshed out enough for us to care.
My main gripe with this film is that aside from the scene with Kaylee and the loud phone ring at the end of the movie, there’s really nothing all that scary about it. While it does set up an eerie atmosphere, it doesn’t ever go too far beyond that. Most of the time, you’re just waiting for something to happen and it almost never does. I will say, it makes you drop your guard so that when those two scares do happen, you’re affected by them more, but the movie is almost two hours. For a movie to be that long and really only have two decent payoffs of the scares is disappointing. Especially when it felt like there were more opportunities to really add some scary imagery or sequences throughout.
That doesn’t mean that Skinamarink is a bad movie. Not at all! I loved the style. It’s so unique and different from what horror movies today are doing. And I would love to know more about what is happening with this entity. Why did it choose them? Where did it come from? What’s its purpose? The movie is unsettling and bizarre and I think that’s all it wanted to really be. Sometimes we just have to be ok with that overall as a viewer. Will I watch this movie again? Probably. Maybe when I’m physically feeling better and on a day with some more sun out. Do I recommend this movie? If you’re looking for something that’s unique and not really going to give you a ton of exposition then yes. If you need that to enjoy the movie, no. I wouldn’t.
Overall, Skinamarink is a fascinating and unique film that unfortunately, is not very scary, but it’s cool and artsy and I can applaud Bell on that! Plus, he made this on a shoestring budget and filmed it in his parent’s house and it grossed well over a couple million dollars so it’s safe to say, this movie was something a lot of people wanted to see! For that, I award Skinamarink 3 out of 5 skulls!

Welp. I’ve been wanting to post one of these for a while but I guess now’s a good a time as ever:
May I present
A List of Youtube Channels I Would Recommend (Subject to Change Seeing As Ain’t Nobody Loyal Apparently But Whatevs!!!!)
Kennie JD: A reviewer of things from dating shows a la Love is Blind to Tubi movies to Filipino movies, etc. offering some very thoughtful commentary. All while putting her makeup on 😘 Best known for her Bad Movies and a Beat series but really everything she puts out hits. Including her video on the Try Guys Incident.
Athena P: Yet another reviewer with insane makeup, but this one takes the tv shows from childhood and explores the “lore” suggested or outright shown. Absolutely hilarious in her delivery and her fans are called Butt-Lovers! 🍑💥🫲🏻
Studson Studio: A craft-tuber who makes fantastical builds ranging from a recreation of Howl’s Moving Castle from trash to a custom action-figure of Ganondorf from Tears of the Kingdom. Frankly it’s astounding how this guy can just look at a piece of supposed garbage and know exactly what to do with it! (Here’s an idea for a drinking game: Take a sip every time he uses a horseshoe! [You will die💖])
North of the Border: Another craft-tuber but with slightly more…distinct tastes… The mans be making some cursed content is what I’m saying. Creative and bold, but cursed. Beware any uploads that have “realistic” in the title.
OwONekko: An art YouTuber with brutal (and hilarious) thoughts about some of your favorite characters’ designs. She tends to veer towards redesigns like with the fusions from Steven Universe, and designing human forms for non-human characters such as the Heeler family from Bluey
Truegreen7: A popular Pokétuber with a host of playlists and prompts to choose from! Perhaps his most popular being when he invites other artists to a challenge where they are given a prompt and are meant to create a Pokémon from it. However, he also had videos where he has friends randomly pick traits and he makes a Pokémon from them, or he gives himself a prompt such as Pokémon based off his own fears. Always a pleasure when he uploads!!
Microwave Society: Three friends who get together and review…things. Usually it’s movies, especially ones from childhood. Sometimes it’s products from, like, Temu. Either way, they’re going through A Time so you can have a good time.
Razzle: Also a group of friends getting together to review movies. Sometimes they even act out entire scripts to movies. What makes them different from MS, however, is…Well, they drink while doing it. Which lends itself to sone absolute bangers of jokes and quotes.
Pidgin Doll: Admittedly I mostly just watch his Shorts. But in my defense, even those are wonderful to watch. His doll designs and paint marker drawings are gorgeous and unique with their fashions and makeup, and almost every video comes with a little tidbit about either his childhood, his art journey, or just whatever inspired him to create what he did.
Something Wicked: A craft-tuber who makes clay models based off of illustrations from old works and texts. And I mean, like, creatures from alchemical tomes; beasts from 17th century logs; face-butted devils and the sort. He doesn’t have much uploaded so far (admittedly only four at the time of this posting, but that’s because the amount of time, care, and detail he puts into each piece deserves it. Plus you get a nifty lesson in art history or just history in general as he goes into the design choices!
The Harry Gold Show: Welcome to The Harry Gold Show, hosted by the ever forthcoming Harry Gold! He’s…disturbingly good at what he does. And what does he do? Art. Of varying mediums and designs, though mostly digital. Though he has recreated the art style of a dead artist as a gift for his dad. Let me put it this way: There’s a reason some joke that he will give AI a run for its money when it comes to replicating styles (he even did a video putting that to the test!)
Dollightful: This cutesy custom doll-maker has a whole host of “dollightful” designs to observe! From a series based on dragon girls to rainbow girls to a vampire with great taste in art, you’ll always be left cooing over the cuties.
HeXtian: Where Dollightful’s dolls are cute, HeXtian’s dolls are sexy. Complete with snatched waists and (usually) red-bottomed heels, his dolls are ready to to show up and show out and make you wish you could dress like them.

Top 5 favorite movies and/or shows? 👀
Kinda a hard one to answer tbh! One, bcs i don't watch a lot of either these days but also because i vaguely like lots of things but not many stand out to me....
5. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a bit of a hidden gem I think. I believe (?) there's currently an upload of it to youtube, because it's kinda hard to watch legit. I found out about it bcs of a youtuber I watch doing a review of it (cosmonaut variety hour). I owe so much to that video.
4. Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse, I like superhero movies 🤷‍♂️ and marvel studios have made a few good ones but this movie is so good it kinda makes them all look bland in comparison.
3. Doctor Who has been a favourite of mine for years and years. The 12th Doctor is my doctor and Clara is my favourite companion. ☺️ (Which means despite my love of the show I have not known peace in this fandom for the last 8 years or something.)
2. Squid Game, I rarely watch feel bad shows and movies bcs they're just not really my thing. But I'm glad i took a chance on tumblr's recommendation here, I find most of their collective suggestions uninteresting but they were absolutely right on this one. It was a powerful piece of media.
1. Everything Everywhere All At Once, maybe. I gotta watch it again but that movie really hit me when I first saw it. From the message to the visuals. I still think about it a lot. I keep trying to convince people I know who haven't seen it to watch it lol.

So because I've been watching videos of a ton of christmas music for my christmas music side project, YouTube served me up this video
youtube
It's a clip from Adam Sandler's hannukah movie, there's a higher quality version with the rest of the song here.
youtube
Apparently Eight Crazy Nights is widely panned, with a rotten tomatoes of 13% and reviews like "What the hell were they thinking?". I thought this was kind of harsh, the animation looks pretty good and Sandler's got a decent singing voice.
So then I click the next suggested one, where Sandler's also voicing a frail old man and his sister and
youtube
oof
Oof.
OOF.
Retract my evaluation of Sandler's voice being good. Like I can't say that Sandler's an unskilled voice actor or singer. I just have some issues with his artistic decisions.

Spree: Film Analysis
Tumblr media
Spree (2020), directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko, represents every teenager’s dream: the dream of being famous on social media. The film follows Kurt Kunkle, played by Joe Kerry, as Kurt struggles to gain attention online. Kurt’s dream, like so many teens and young adults, is to become a social media influencer. Kurt, though, can’t seem to find a following, with at most a few dozen people watching his videos. In order to gain a bigger following, Kurt decides to livestream himself working for the rideshare app Spree and kill passengers he finds annoying or doesn’t like.
Tumblr media
(Two passengers in Kurt's car)
Spree makes use of unique filmmaking methods found in the found footage sub-genre to tell Kurt’s story, with the film being comprised almost entirely of cellphone footage and GoPro dashcams in Kurt’s car. One moment Kurt will be talking to the GoPro, the next moment he is looking down at his phone and talking to the live stream chat, and then it’ll cut back to a different GoPro angle. This is a big part of why this film, along with the found footage subgenre matters: it is relatable to the audience. In the words of Roger Ebert in his 2020 review of the film, “Spree feels like a day spent entirely on the Internet, leaping around from YouTube to Twitter to Google to TikTok and back, never staying in one spot longer than a few minutes...” This style of filmmaking makes Spree appealing to a modern audience, one with short attention spans and a chronic addiction to social media. However, to some, the film can come off as messy and chaotic. In her review of the film, Jeannette Catsoulis has this to say: “Directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko, “Spree” is an aesthetic nightmare of screens-within-screens, splitting and reshaping and crawling with real-time commentary on Kurt’s bloody deeds. This infection of our movie visuals with hectic impersonations of online behavior has been spreading for a while now, and “Spree” reaches some kind of nadir. Moreover, the film’s lack of perceptiveness — “I May Destroy You” on HBO currently offers far greater insight into the dark seductions of influencer culture — is disappointing. Kotlyarenko seems entirely unaware that his escalation of gore suggests he’s just as thirsty to be seen as his sick protagonist.”
Tumblr media
(Kurt looking at one of the GoPros in his car, showing the simplistic filmmaking style used in many scenes throughout the film)
This idea of fast-paced content is embodied in the film's opening scenes. The first few minutes are full of constant cuts between Kurt drawing on a whiteboard, then cutting to a YouTube video of his, then back to the whiteboard, and then to a live stream on the streaming app LiveFly. There is a scene around the 1:45 mark showing Kurt live-streaming with his dad, holding his phone vertically with semi-shaky footage and talking to the handful of people watching the stream. Most films would never utilize this type of footage because it comes off as chaotic and unprofessional, but for Spree, this is what makes the movie. People are used to watching this type of inexperienced, vertically filmed content every day. TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram are almost entirely comprised of these types of videos, and people love them. By incorporating these videos, Spree breaks many boundaries that films have stayed within and brings a sense of familiarity to its audience.
youtube
Another example of this can be found later on in the movie. Kurt picks up three influencers and convinces them to go to a “cool spot” where the influencers can make it look like they’re on a fun adventure. This spot ends up being a junkyard, and Kurt begins driving around at high speed with two of the people recording themselves standing up through his sunroof. However, Kurt has a more sinister plan for these three influencers. Two wild dogs appear in front of the car, with Kurt stopping and allowing them to jump up onto the roof and attack two of his passengers. While they are being mauled, Kurt kills the influencer sitting next to him in the passenger seat. All of this, of course, is being live-streamed on the internet by Kurt. Throughout this scene, there is constant cutting between the different GoPro cameras and the videos being recorded on the influencer’s phones. This makes for a scene full of energy and chaos while also cutting to the right angle at the right time, such as cutting to the influencer’s phone when they drive under a gate, nearly getting their head cut off.
Tumblr media
(A still from the scene mentioned above)
This scene, and the movie as a whole, also provide a shallow critique of influencer culture. The whole premise of the film is about a lonely kid wanting to get famous on the internet, going to extreme lengths (murdering his passengers) to try and attract attention. Kurt engaged in increasingly erratic behavior in his chase for fame, including murdering his own friend to steal his viewers. In a messy, roundabout kinda way, Spree is a film about the dangers of going too far in your pursuit of fame, all while trying to remain relatable through its unique film style.
