RPG Maker Fever Hero & Issues

Warning: This article may contain spoilers and the content inappropriate for children…or may not contain.But get the children away from the screen just in case.

Five little authors went out to write. One little author has missed the deadline. Four little authors didn’t pay him much mind. Three authors are left since fourth drank the lye. Three little authors are bursting with confidence. One overworked himself and other two ignored his absence. Two little authors try to finish hard task. Teddy bear hugged one and one stands at last. One little author is left all alone. He hung himself on the chandelier and then there were none…Then who has finished this article? And why this teddy bear is giving me a weird look?

1. Walking on a Star Unknown

Walking on a Star Unknown is the latest game made by Segawa and most heartwarming out of her three games (while End Roll was more heartbreaking than heartwarming, and Farethere City is somewhere in-between). Game tells a story of two alien siblings, whose ship has crashed on the unfamiliar planet, where they decide to participate in the cooking tournament to get their ship fixed. Gameplay is simple yet very fun - most of the time you gather ingredients, learn new recipes, do side-quests and make friends with the planet inhabitants. Game has memorable cast of characters with their own interesting stories and bright and stylish visuals. As previous Segawa’s games Star also has some disturbing themes and some areas are dark and creepy, but overall tone of the game is bright and optimistic.

2. Witch’s Heart

Actually I wrote the detailed review on this game few posts ago, but I’m still including WH in the article for those who are lazy to read that enormous wall of a text. The most notable part of the game is its plot (which is interesting to follow and full of good twists) and memorable cast of well-developed characters. Along with it WH has entertaining gameplay (mini-games included), great presentation and catchy soundtrack. Overall it is one of the best games I’ve ever played, so if you like rpg-horrors I suggest to at least give it a try. Game is still unfinished, currently only one ending (out of four routes) is available, but even in the present state it means about 15-20 hours of gameplay.

3. The Mystery Files of Detective Inaba No. 1, 2, 3

Here goes a game trilogy about Sogo Inaba-a tsundere detective with adorable side and Nina Arimura – his energetic assistant, together they solve various cases, some of the cases are pretty normal, and others are somewhat paranormal. First game of the series is a detective with minor supernatural horror elements – some rpg-horror typical puzzles and minor chasing sequences included. Second game is purely realistic and much more simple gameplay-wise comparing to the first game. Stories in first two games resemble Agatha Christie’s detective novels mixed with japanese psychological horrors. Third game of the series is closer to pure survival horror with minor detective elements and plays like many other rpg-horrors . To be honest, the third game is my personal favorite, since it is the most polished game out of three and the good conclusion for the Inaba and Arimura’s story. All three games are about 2 hours long and have great presentation (like quality art-style and great in-game music).

4. Asadoke no Majo

Asadoke no Majo starts with our protagonist Yui arguing with her father and as a result running away from home to …another country, where resides their old family mansion along with dark family secret and a handsome guy managing the estate as a bonus. Game is about 2 hours long and has pretty simple puzzles, minor jumpscares and several chasing scenes (but a final chase is the only frustrating one). Despite being pretty typical rpg-horror Asadoke no Majo leaves very positive impression thanks to bright cast of characters (the Nogi guy here is something else), good story and atmosphere along with well-chosen soundtrack. Currently game is available in japanese and russian.

5. Hero & Daughter

H&D is a dungeon-crawler made by tachi (Headless Prisoner, Moonlight Ghost, Hello?Hell…o?), which mocking famous fantasy cliché “hero defeats a dark lord”.Our hero Ralph get his level reduced to 1 because of his arrogance, and with this permanent level 1 he is tasked to defeat the Demon Lord. Again. That’s where Ralph’s friend of the haremancer class comes to rescue. This guy can summon pretty girls (including heroines from previous tachi’s games like Erina and Akari) to help Ralph in his quest. H&D is fun and entertaining, battles are fast-pacing, dungeons are complex, visuals are nice, also game has enormous level-cap and loads of optional content and many playable characters. Plot may be simple, but H&D has good humor and characters ( even generic Ralph got a nice personality). If you like quality role-playing games I highly recommend to try it out

6. Ai korosu yori, Ai korosaretai

An ordinary (alright, maybe a bit eccentric) family moves into new house. Soon after that their daughter Lucy falls with high fever.When she gets better, she discovers that her parents are gone and various weird phenomena is occurring in the house. To find the missing parents Lucy will have to search the house and learn about its history full of mysterious disappearances and tragic events. AiAi has very interesting story (good mix of horror and sci-fi) and entertaining gameplay with interesting puzzles and action cut-ins. Also beside proceeding the story you can also do some optional stuff like gathering collectibles and later saving runaway cows. If you like quality horror-adventures I highly recommend to try this game out. AiAi is currently available in japanese and russian.

7. Escatpade

Here goes another quality game for those who is tired from horror and tragedy and wants something warm and relaxing. Escatpade is about the girl who falls into the pit and finds herself in the weird place full of adorable talking cats. Game is nice and fun, have a bright, adorable designs and simple yet elegant puzzles. Also some items in the inventory can change appearance of our heroine (like clothes, glasses and stuffed kittycats).

8. Tower of Feles

ToF made by the author of Escatpade and also full of adorable cats. But unlike Escatparade this game is slightly more challenging. ToF is an action-puzzle where your objective is save your little sister from evil witch. In order to do so you have to climb on top of the tower, solving various puzzles and avoiding witch’s servants in the process. Every floor has a time limit, and if either time runs out or your health drops to zero you’ll have to start the floor over. Game is a bit tricky and very fun to play. If you have beaten Escatpade and want more cats and cuteness- Tower of Feles is what you need.

9. Twilight Epic

Twilight Epic is a sequel to Amayado Bus Stop. This time the main character is Akane’s and Akari’s cousin Akino, who receives a call from unknown girl, who tells him about certain “promise” and right after that he finds this girl’s dead body (or not quite dead). The boy decides to find out the truth and grown-up Chitose and Akari are helping him out. Game is far more simple than its predecessor-puzzles are mostly gone and chasing scenes are pretty straightforward, but still the game is very enjoyable, since story is good and heartwarming. Also game has quality art-style and skit system similar to one in Tales series. Twilight Epic is currently available in japanese and russian.

10. Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners

Peret em Heru is survival horror with rpg-elements about a group of tourists, lead by an archeologist, professor Tsuchida, exploring ancient ruins underneath the Great Pyramid of Giza. Needless to say, that these ruins are filled with deadly traps and Tsuchida’s intentions are far from mere scientific interest. Gameplay resembles Sweet Home and Corpse Party –Rebuilt-, but more simple and straightforward – you play as one of the tourists, fight monsters, grind levels, and save your teammates from booby traps. Overall Peret em Heru is a nice game with stylish old-fashioned visuals and good music, game is about 3 hours long and have one ending, which varies depending on how many of your teammates have survived.

11. The Object

You awake in the dark room in the unknown place and find out that not only your memories are gone, but your head is gone as well. On top of that you can attach literally anything to an empty place where your head once was. Now your goal is to regain the lost memories along with the head and leave the house. Game consists from exploration and simple yet elegant puzzles, which you solve by swapping your heads. Game is pretty interesting and has five endings , to get all of them you’ll need about 30 minutes.

12. Colors: Lost Memories

This time you play as a little girl who finds herself in the colorless world inhabited by talking animals. To get back home she must return this world its colors. Colors have stylish visuals highly reminiscent of old GBC games as well as unique puzzles based on using various colors you get during the game at the right places. First you can use only one color (for example red is needed to light or put out fire), later you will be able to activate up to three colors at the same time.Game is cute and fun to play, approximate time of the playthrough is one hour.

13. Nemoral

Nemoral is a short game about two cops who end up in the abandoned mansion while chasing the cult followers, assuming that they have something to do with the recent disappearances of children. And this mansion hides pretty dark secret about a project based on the famous fairy tale. Nemoral is quality action-horror, where both visuals and gameplay is somewhat resemble very first Resident Evil (in the good way of course). The only con of Nemoral is anti-climatic ending (game was made for the contest, and author was short on time). But even in present state the game is still enjoyable.

14. B*x. Colorful.

I’ve decided to unite both games in one mini-review, since they are both made by the same author and both are very short. B*x is about lonely girl in bunny outfit, who lives with her boyfriend, the only person who cares about her. But it seems like he’s hiding something from her. Game is about 30 minutes long and have few easy puzzles. Colorful is only 10 minutes long and have no puzzles at all, and more depressing than B*x. In Colorful you just listen to the story and watch pictures. Both games have very nice art style.

oh my god there’s so many of them .. mila is definitely oranges and green tea. she uses green tea lotion, but the smells just remind me of her as a person since this is what we’re basing it on

i know we’re not really doing LITERAL scents, but hyeyoung unnie uses this givenchy perfume, l’interdit. it smells floral, but with spice. she reminds me of clean laundry and roses.

evie unnie is like paint. she’s an artist, so when i smell paint, i think of her. and champagne!! floral scents remind me of her as well, but bright floral scents, not the soft ones like hyeyoung. and rain. mixed bag

jaemin oppa reminds me of clean but slightly floral smells. i think if i had to pick a smell for him, it’d be this one aloe and rose toning spray i have. lavender is also a good one for him. calming smells

jeno oppa is like a soap? yknow just the regular body soap with no added scent? it still smells good and it’s just nice and familiar. also, like when something is baking in the oven on an early morning.

fullsun is like if you’re walking somewhere nice and catch a scent of some nearby flowers and freshy cut grass. the way summer days smelled when i was a child. i also would choose honeysuckle for him

renjun oppa is like a forest? he also reminds me of the smell of books, or paper. i’d also pick a beach, but on a cloudy day and there aren’t many people around and the air. he’s like nature

jisung reminds me of the summer nights smell where you have a bonfire. do you all know what i mean? i dunno, it just fits him! and he’s like a nice fresh smell. maybe like when the air smells colder.

chenle reminds me of a pool and i don’t know how to explain that. on another note, mint. he always has a bit of a minty smell in person, too, so that’s probably why. also cologne because he has a lot of it

mark oppa really reminds me of just... that comfortable home smell? and candles? i think amber and cashmere too... those warm, comfy scents. laundry and clean hair. nice smells. he doesn’t wear cologne btw but he always smells nice

our pets get along pretty well. honey was very hostile at first, but she got used to mr. darcy pretty quickly and they’re best friends. the cats are indifferent to beetle but sometimes they cuddle. and there’s not anymore pets yet!! well, mila has a goldfish too- she just got him and his name is bird.

Horsetense looked up from reading a romance novel, to judge by the cover art. Smiling, she replied, “I really did not expect to see you again, after yesterday’s little upsets! Here, let me send it up!”

She took Daring Do’s envelope and put it into a vacuum cartridge and dropped it into a tube. With a whoosh, it was gone. In a few minutes there was a whoosh and clunk as a cartridge returned. It held a copy of the original document and a note:

“This is the ONLY acceptable agreement. We will not back you at all if you do not sign!

Isa Robber

Mystic Overthrow

Crule Tyranny”

Reading the note, Daring smiled and wrote across the Document in deep soaking indelible marker, “These terms are the sort of toxic trash that the composting facilities will refuse! I do too! Find another sucker! D.D.”

Horsetense looked sour as she returned the document with a clack and whoosh. She observed, “The Partners won’t like that!”

Daring Do patted her hoof and replied, “They don’t seem to like anything that is honest. I hope that you find a better position than this one soon.”

She turned on her hoof and was leaving when the system did its whoosh-clack. The note in it said:

“Our generous offer is withdrawn.

Good luck in your year long wait to sell your latest major find to the Royal Museum! R.O.T.”

Daring Do smiled serenely, showed the receptionist the note and told Horsetense, “See this? You might find the noon news amusing!”

She sauntered out, the note safely in her saddle bag.

She was about to return to the Adventurer’s Guild for a nice luncheon when her brows drew down in a V of concentration. Not only the waiter’s news but many other things began to fall out of their accustomed places, making a mess of her orderly mind.

It was a feeling that she knew well. It had led her to almost all of past expeditions. When things are not as they should be, the first stop is the Royal Library.

As she climbed the steps, she admired the allegorical carving of the doors. The sun and moon arising together over the field of knowledge. The doors, obeying an ancient spell, opened impressively for her.

Inside, she was greeted by the wonderful odor of books, scrolls, manuscripts, codices of many sorts. This was the scent of her true heart.

Lurking in the overall scent, was the recent addition of fire proofing and extinguishing spells. They were a wise precaution whose necessity was shown by the Golden Oak Library disaster of Ponyville. Some still wondered how one of the most magically powerful beings of Equestria, Twilight Sparkle, could have forgotten something so basic as fire suppression spells, just when she most needed them. That, however, was not germane to her visit.

She walked up to the research desk and presented her Royal Pass, personally sealed by both Luna and Celestia. “I need full access to the Closed and Sealed Stacks, please,” she smiled at the young librarian.

Wide eyed, after staring at the pass, she turned and almost galloped to a Senior Librarian. She whispered, pointing back at Daring Do.

The senior came over and asked, “Reason for your visit, Antiquarian Do?”

“I have come across some discrepancies in research concerning the ancient X'ibian Empire. I already know, from previous work here, that the answers are not to be found in the ordinary open or closed stacks.”

The senior took Daring Do’s pass and inserted it into a spell reader. It chimed. The four nearest Closed Research Stacks simply faded away leaving a huge pair of doors appearing to be iron bound ancient oak. Daring Do was not deceived. She knew that the reality behind the glamor spell was four tonne Military Armor Grade steel, sealed from forced entry or exit. She also knew that there were excellent reasons for being sealed against both! This was not a library for the faint of heart!

Resuming her pass, she asked, “May I have Apprentice Librarian Blendin to assist my studies, please? He and I have worked together before this. I have found him to be an excellent assistant.”

Before setting the opening spell, the Senior Librarian made a note and called over a Magic Net system, “Apprentice Librarian Blendin to the Canterlot Main Doors, please.”

It took a few minutes before the signal that he was present lit. The Senior Librarian tapped the opening spell. The great doors did not swing or retract, as one might expect. They became a thin seeming vapor.

Daring Do trotted through it without any problem. She smiled at her half brother and said, “We have a fun one! The Heart of Discord not only might be real, it might even be something that belongs here or in the Warehouse!”

Blendin’s brows shot up. “I would be laughing right now, Sis, if it was anypony but you who said that. What brings this on?”

Daring Do snickered and replied, “Disorder in what I thought I knew and a conversation with somepony from an organiation that I ran into while searching for the Darkling’s Tomb.”

Showing a side that was rarely seen when he was off work, Blendin promptly asked, “The Ancient Guardians?”

“Exactly. One told me today that they lost the location of Im Farst’s tomb during the Chineighese invasions of a thousand years ago. In short, THEY are certain that the Heart of Discord is there. They just don’t know any longer, where, exactly.”

Blendin’s eyes got a far-away look to them as he dug through the encyclopedic knowledge that even an Apprentice Librarian needed.

“Where do you want to start, Sis?”

“At the beginning. With the death and funeral of Im Farst.”

Blendin nodded briskly. “That is easy, then. There are only three contemporary documents of it. They are followed by the wall painting but it is later. It will take a few to access them. Are you willing to use a Twilight Closed Reading spell to keep from disturbing the actual documents. They are very fragile.”

“If you recommend it, Blendin, yes. What are they?”

“One is an actual scroll painting on lotus root paper. It is likely the most delicate. It is a traditional Xibian landscape with a weeping dragon and a eulogy to Im Farst. The eulogy is signed Wisdom. The other two are thin sliced bamboo fold books, both with fire damage.”

He actually went to an OLD physical card file and leafed gently. Puzzled, he checked again. “I wonder how long ago this happened?” he inquired of empty air. “There are FOUR things here. I found two cards stuck together. I will have to speak to a Senior Librarian about that.”

Daring Do overheard him and looked up from her magically generated pages of perfectly duplicated documents. They WERE fascinating in their own right.

“What did you find, Blendin?”

“A carved stone inventory made at the time of interment. It is cracked across but otherwise intact. I assume that you want it?”

“Absolutely! Also, any provenance or location of finding! Not only the stone, but everything known of it!”

Blendin smiled sadly and gave her a thin file. “The stone was found in a Chineighese open air market about eight hundred years ago and given into Royal Care. Not much help there.”

He did develop the copy spell, giving Daring Do all of the visible surfaces of the stone, top, thin sides and back.

Daring Do began to scan the stone, her brows knitting now and again as she found and solved an ideogram that was new to her. She pulled out a magnifier for much of it. The ancient engraving was surprisingly small and tightly compacted.

Blendin watched his half sister’s reading with awe. “How can you do that, Sis? I know at least a hundred scholars of Ancient X'ibian and not one of them can just snap out the meaning of a new ideogram like that!”

She looked up for a moment. “It’s really not too hard, Blendin. The construction of ancient X'ibian ideograms follows a rigidly logical system from about a hundred bases. Once you know those, the rest follows, except for bad handwriting, of course.” She grinned. “That is nothing new at all.”

Blendin nodded agreement and then brightened up. “I need to do an advancement paper in the Library. Mind if I take that tip and develop it?”

Absently muttering, “Be my guest,” Daring Do returned to her study.

“Pardon, Sis. I need more space for you.” Blendin grabbed the end of the Library table and pulled. It stretched out another three meters, growing extra legs as it did so.

Daring Do raised her eyebrows as she watched. “Handy trick, that!”

“You know it, Sis. I needed the space to set out the more modern works, you know, from four hundred PNW to the End of Exile.”

“Four hundred Post Nightmare Wars? Nothing earlier?”

“According to the Master Index, nope. A long dry spell there. Then the liter-ature explodes. All the mystical shit and such.”

She nodded and returned to deciphering the fold books and the painting. She was nearly done with the painting when she asked, “Can I get modern paper copies of these old documents? I just spotted something curious.”

“Not a problem, Sis. I will do a contagion duplication on them. You will be able to take those copies if they pass the Security of Information checks. I did not bother looking at that info when I set them up for you.”

Blendin was systematically setting out the later documents by date when he stopped cold.

“This makes no sense at all, Sis. Check me on this. When Im Farst was buried in his hidden tomb there was no trace of the Heart of Discord.

“Then, IN EQUESTRIA, the tales of the Heart of Discord begin to show up in print about four hundred PNW. The wall painting that is the only known documentation of it was not found until 653 PNW.

“It gets worse. The tomb that the painting is in dates quite exactly. It was made 150 years after the death of Im Farst but not found until 653 PNW.”

Daring Do stared at Blendin’s work in rising excitement.

“It makes perfect sense after all! Who was the wife of Im Farst?”

Blendin actually took time to consult the Index again. “Her name was Wisdom. Legend says that she was a dragon. How does that make any sense at all?”

Daring Do took a sheet of paper and a writing brush. Inking it professionally, she wrote a character.

“First, remember that there were no male or female names in ancient X'ibian. This thing called a SHI was added to a surname or single name to indicate female and left off for male names! It was silent in ancient X'ibian.

“Now look at this!” She quickly drew another character. “That is the ancient character for Wisdom. This one is Discord, the Dragonequis. Add a Shi to Discord and what do you see?”

Blendin stared at the two characters in consternation. “Wisdom! Discord with a Shi and Wisdom look the same!”

“Right! Im Farst really was married to a dragon. Eris, the female form of Discord.

“The Vase of Wisdom is in all of these inventories! A hundred and fifty years later, on a tomb wall, the vase was named without the Shi and the Heart of Discord was born!”

Blendin looked carefully at his time-line of publications and written down tales. He thoughtfully accessed the Index again.

He added a whole selection of more material from the Last Nightmare War onward.

Softly, he said, “Here she is. It all begins with the Tales of Aleax the Blind. This dates to only 115 PNW. Eris, the Dragonequis, is asked if ever she knew love. Her reply is, ‘In a land far to the East, I left my love a vase that I made. I left my Heart in his tomb. Im Farst was his name.’ She shed a few tears and asked what reward was wanted for bringing her that memory.”

Daring Do sadly offered, “That explains so much. Blendin, I need these inventories, including the stone’s upper surface and that landscape painting with the Im Farst eulogy on it.”

Blendin went to the Index and lifted a very modern Magic Net mirror up from a concealed pocket. He tapped codes and looked carefully at the results. Grinning, he tapped a whole set of new codes.

“They will accept my paper on the reading of Ancient X'ibian ideograms! They also cleared modern paper copies of the things you asked for. They are now locked to the papers that they are on. Feel free to take them, Sis!”

Returning, Daring Do saw the enormous steel doors simply go to mist again. She paused long enough to say, “Best of fortune on the paper, Blendin. It is going to keep you busy, I promise it.”

With a grin, he replied, “I know, Sis. I do know. Thanks for the tip.”

Daring Do walked out to the Research Desk and Logged out, showing her copies to the Senior Librarian. There was no sign behind her of the massive secret doors. Just the ordinary closed stacks.

If Daring Do was walking like nothing of any importance had changed, her mind was racing! It WAS real! The Vase, the Heart of ERIS, rather than Discord, was there. The tomb of Im Farst was a fact!

She was pretty sure how to find it too! That, she had failed to mention to her half brother, Blendin. Best not to give any possible rumor a root to grow.

Ensconced in the Adventurer’s Guild’s secure communication room, Daring Do tapped up codes on the Secure Magic Net Mirror there. She was greeted by the surly face of Count Umber. He still had a plaster on the bruise over his right eye from their earlier altercation. He reached to cut off the call.

With a smile that could have flash frozen a polar bear, Daring Do said serenely, “Please do, Count. Princess Luna audits all incoming calls. When she finds that you cut off a Private Antiquities Emergency call, you will be in so much hot water that you will be lucky to retain your County. Luna herself gave me this code after the debacle of the Golden Necklace of Pharow Underrock.”

Putting the knife in deeper and twisting, she added, “That was at the same time that she gave you your present work. It is amazing how much better the Museum Acquisition Policy has become. I have already been paid for the balance of the Pharow Underrock Collection.”

With a growl that would have done credit to hungry bear, Count Umber put her through. Princess Luna was sitting in a bath up to her withers, gently fanning her wings in the warm water. There was a squadron of blue bath duckies hidden by lumps of bubble foam. They were preparing to ambush a similar squadron of yellow bath duckies.

She looked up from her bath game and said, “What is the problem with the Underrock Collection? Umber has noted that you are calling about it.”

“With due respect, your Highness, he is absolutely wrong. I am calling about a thing connected to the legal firm of R.O.T.”

Princess Luna sat up suddenly, water cascading off her shoulders. “COUNT UMBER! GET OFF THIS LINE! ALL CALLS ON THIS CODE GROUP ARE ABSOLUTELY PRIVATE! You were given strict instructions about the call system. YOU HAVE VIOLATED ONE OF THE MOST BASIC ONES! We will discuss your position in Canterlot when this call is done!”

She tapped a few codes in her bathroom mirror. “There. The nuisance is removed. By Royal Guards. Now we are private. What do you need to discuss?”

“R.O.T. is mounting an expedition to X'ibia, in the far desert regions of the Chineighese Empire. They are searching for the Heart of Discord. Their care with priceless antiquities was shown during the break in at my University office.”

“There have been many expeditions to search for the Heart of Discord, Daring Do. None has ever succeeded, lending much credence to the notion that it is legendary. Why are you so concerned now?”

“Because, your Highness, today, doing research at the Great Library, I discovered that the Vase of Wisdom is perfectly real. Wisdom was Im Farst’s wife, the Dragon Queen of ancient X'ibia.

“How well do you know the writing of that ancient land?”

“Excellently, my dear. So, what you found is the connection between Eris now and Wisdom, the Dragon Queen then?”

“You do not seem surprised, your Highness.”

“Only saddened that it will arouse such heartbreaking memories in my friend. We must tell her that the secret is out. How much more do you know of this matter?”

“I believe that I know where Im Farst’s tomb is. Wisdom painted a landscape with a weeping dragon and inscribed her eulogy to him. I have a copy from the Library. I am fairly sure that it shows the tomb’s hidden location.”

Luna sort of sank into her bath. “You are correct. We must tell her. Now. Together. I cried with her for many nights when he died.”

Stiffing up, Luna tapped some other codes to the mirror.

The call was answered by an amazingly lovely pony with one perfectly centered cyclops like eye. “ERIS, Inc.! How may I direct your call please, Princess Luna?”

“Hello, Cy. I hate to interrupt whatever Eris is doing but I have urgent news for her. Just tell her that Wisdom has been found. She will know what I mean.”

“Wisdom has been found. I will tell her.”

Almost instantly, the mirror switched to show Eris, wearing the silken robes of the Chineighese. An eye as trained as Daring Do’s saw that they were in the style of ancient X'ibia.

There was a copy of the Wisdom Eulogy to Im Farst hung to the wall and both incense and tea being offered before it on an ornate, low table of black wood, richly inlaid with natural woods of many colors.

Eris asked mildly, “Luna, if it was any but you calling, I would have required them to wait. What do you mean that Wisdom has been found?”

Daring Do spoke up. “A Shi is supposed to be silent and only indicate gender. A Shi added to Discord, the dragonequis, makes Eris, that is you. It also turns the ideogram into Wisdom, the name that you used when you lived your life with Im Farst, whom I see that you still love.”

There was a small tear at Eris’ eye. “That is true, all of it. What do I need to know beyond the fact that you found it out?”

“The law firm of R.O.T. is mounting an expedition to X'ibia to locate the Heart of Discord. Of course, THAT really is legendary, the result of twisting the words of Aleax the Blind to say that you left a Vase, your heart, in his tomb. That is where the legends of the Heart of Discord come from.

“Even with the trickery that they use, they have begun to set up the expedition. R.O.T. could find the tomb.”

Eris said softly, “Their care with Antiquities is amply shown by the break in at your office. I see. What do you need from me?”

Daring Do smiled and replied, “Two sorts of things. One is your permission to open the tomb and conserve the things in it. The other is a little more personal. Anything that you can think of that might mess up the R.O.T. expedition and throw them off the trail.”

Eris began to smile hugely around her fang. “Doctor Do, I know your reputation in detail. I will trust you to open my love’s tomb and conserve all as well as it can be done. Expect my document of permission within the hour. Cy will deliver it in person.

“As for your other request, let us say that I will consider it favorably.

“Now, I have much to attend to, including letting my love know that you are coming.” The mirror blanked.

Luna’s bath duckies were all joined into a large squadron, attacking the bath bubble foam furiously! She looked up with a serious face. “While you were talking to Eris, I set it up with my sister, Celestia. We are putting your Expedition under the Royal Wing.

“You mentioned being able to manage the cost. You will not have to. We will cover it all with letters of credit and passage permissions that are being prepared now. Celestia has summoned the Chineighese Ambassador to prepare your documents for free travel and official assistance. All the papers should arrive in a few hours. They are addressed to you at the Adventurer’s Guild.”

“Thank you, your Highness.” Daring Do blanked the mirror and emerged from the room. The waiter from this morning was there, tears in his eyes. “Our long Guardianship is over. We have heard from the most exalted one. Wisdom herself has put us at your disposal. What then shall we do for you?”

Daring Do gave him a deep formal bow and replied, “We will need you still. There are more than Im Farst to guard. If you will come with me, I will show you what I mean.”

Deepest concern in his voice, brows drawn in honest worry, he asked, “What will become of Im Farst and all of his things?”

Daring Do replied honestly, “I do not know. I will gather him and all of those things and they will be given to the Most Exalted Wisdom. She will then decide what may be kept for study, placed in museums on display and what she will keep for her own. All will be a gift of my Princesses to Wisdom. This plan has been made and will be kept.”

He needed no thought. “This is the best that can be hoped for. He will be reunited with Wisdom. May they find all the joy that can be between Mortal and the Dragon.”

Who wants a big long post explain my MLP Self-Insert/OC because I AGAIN have no impulse control?!

None one? Good thing this is a side blog with 5 followers then!

Let’s start with something easy. This is my MLP OC/Self Insert I made out of impulse while watching literally all of Friendship is Magic. His name is Dream Eater, people call him Dreamer.

He was made as a background pony who would normally be seen riding the backs of other ponies around ponyvill. He was also Big Mac’s tiny gay boyfriend.

After a while, specifically when Big Mac got a girlfriend, I started coming up for a story for him that fit him well into the canon because of course I did.

Dream Eater is a descendant of a race of Pegasus known as Dream Ponies. Dream Ponies live on the highest cloud in Equestria. Long ago, they were incharge of helping Princess Luna with the dreams of ponies, along with controlling the stars. They’re a race of nocturnal ponies who spend all their time either sleeping or doing their job, friendship was not a priority for them.

When Princess Luna became imprisoned in the moon, the Dream Ponies split. Many stayed high in the clouds to continue controlling the starts and constellations, while others moved lower to discover the world and friendship.

Dreamer’s parents, Day Dream and Dream Catcher, eloped and ran away to move lower into the world, as they wished for a better life for their new born colt. A friendlier life. Unfortunately, they and their baby were still stuck in the nocturnal life of their families, and struggled to leave the house during waking hours. Still, every day Day Dream and Dream Catcher would force their little colt to go out during the day and play and find friends.

Eventually Dream Eater stumbled upon Big Macintosh, whom at the time was still a talkative little guy, so when this random pony came and fell asleep on his back, he hardly noticed as he talked and talked all the way home. When he got home, it was Apple Jack who’d noticed her brother’s new friend was snoozing though his stories, which she found hilarious.

Of course, when Dreamer finally woke up around Sunset he was absolutely mortified and apologized over and over. The apples didn’t mind none and welcomed the pony to stay for dinner. When he apologized to big mac on the walk home, the young colt admitted he didn’t mind the company, even if he was asleep.

From then on, it was pretty common to see little Mac walking though town with this small orange Pegasus asleep on his back, talking to himself as if the small pony was listening. Soon most other towns ponies began to allow the colt to ride them as well. Whenever he woke up, he’d simply switch ponies, and as he was very light, no one ever really minded the extra company.

When Princess Luna returned, Dreamer’s parents returned to the Dream Ponies to resume their jobs, leaving Dreamer to inherit their small cloud house to himself. Still, even though he wasn’t forced from the house, Dream still went into ponyvill every day to ride and meet new ponies.

He also spent most his nights with Big Mac, catching up on all the talking he missed out on during the day, snuggling with the large pony, or just watching him sleep in a sweet and totally not creepy way.

They were dating, but it wasn’t widely known, thus the Heart’s and Hooves day fiasco while Dreamer was attending a family emergency out of town. Of course they immediately celebrated a late Hearts and Hooves day when he returned.

Around the time Princess Twilight became Princess Twilight, Princess Luna called all Dream Ponies back to the clouds. Dreamer had to go, by royal decree and.. they weren’t sure if he’d ever come back to ponyvill. It was heart breaking, but Big Mac and Dreamer had to break up.

Around when the school was built, Dreamer was allowed to return to his small drifting home, and the first thing he did was run to see Big Mac! Only to find the love of his life had moved on. Sugar Belle was very nice about the situation, but it was clear to Dreamer Big Mac loved her very much. He assured the two he was fine with this, and even congratulated them.

Dream Eater fell into a depression. Not only was he sleeping all day, he was sleeping all night as well. His house drifted over Ponyvill, instead of staying over the Apple barn like it use to. Of course, Big Mac was worried, Dreamer was his best friend.

After almost a week of no one seeing Dreamer, the mane six decide to step in and convince Dream to come out of his home. He has a sit down with Big Mac out in the Apple grove, alone. It’s very heartfelt and I have totally thought of all the details about it but it’s weird and I don’t want to type the whole thing just know it’s too dark for MLP and this pony is depressed.

Not wanting to leave Dreamer alone after this, but too busy with his own life to keep an eye on the pony, Big Mac asks for help from the mane six. Unfortunately, the girls are also constantly tossed around by life, thus causing the nocturnal pony to switch hooves constantly. When night finally comes around, after being bounced from pony to pony and getting no sleep all day, Dreamer says he’s just going to go home.

Of course, it’s still too dangerous to let the pony be alone. The mane six try to keep him from leaving, forcefully pinning him down, pulling his tail, everything they can do to keep him from flying away. Eventually the Keeper of Equestrian tales, Rockhoof, notices their struggle, and runs in to dissolve the situation.

The Mane Six explain the situation while trying not to give to much away about Dreamer’s mental state. Rockhoof, being the hero he is, offers to watch the small pony as long as they need. The mane six are unsure, but they don’t have much other choice. They need to sleep.

In Rockhoof’s care, Dreamer revisits a simpler time of riding a large pony while he praddles on and on, telling stories or talking about whatever may come to mind. Not only that, but Rockhoof is able to practice telling stories and being less animated while doing so, as he doesn’t want to awaken his rider.

Dreamer gets over his broken heart and slowly heals with new love, new friends, and of course old friends.

Clara Reads City of Bones Part 3: Hogwarts Institute for Witchcraft and Shadowhunting

The Plot Thus Far

When last we left off, our lovable cardboard cutout protagonist, Clary Fray, had been attacked by a demon called a Ravener and taken to a place called “The Institute”. After three days of recovery, she has an uncomfortable (for us) conversation with Isabelle Lightwood, where we learn that Isabelle is hot and that we, the audience, should hate her for that, and also that Jace Wayland lives with the Lightwood family because his parents are dead. We are meant to feel bad about this. We are meant to feel sorry for Jace, which is a bit of a tall order, considering that Jace Wayland is the worst person to ever smirk and shrug his way through a YA book. If I were trapped in an elevator with him I wouldn’t even wait five minutes to be rescued, I’d pry those doors open and just drop. Death is cruel but quality time with Jace Wayland is crueler.

So Clary leaves the hospital wing and goes down a long hallway, lead by the sound of someone playing a piano. Last time I said that it was Alec (Isabelle’s brother) who played piano, and that it was his only character trait, but nope!! It’s actually my favorite boy Jace, that sack of human refuse! So I guess Alec has no personality, actually. Anyway, they have some “witty” “banter”, and then Alec takes her to the library to talk to the head of the Institute, Hodge Starkweather, and, yeah. I think it’s time to talk about the Harry Potter stuff.

The Harry Potter Stuff

You know how E.L. James made minor changes to her crappy Twilight fanfic and then published it as 50 Shades of Gray? Well, as near as anyone can figure out, this is basically the same thing that Cassandra Clare did with her Harry Potter fanfic The Draco Trilogy. Just change the names, tweak the backstories ever so slightly, slap on a crappy cover and publish that sucker! It’s technically not plagiarism anymore! This is how you end up with stuff like "The Institute”, a secret school to teach young magic kids to control their powers, or Hodge Starkweather, elderly magic professor, who, one could argue, is a crackpot old fool teaching our protagonists magic tricks. (Gosh, how does Clare come up with this stuff?)

This obviously isn’t proof of any kind, but when the villain of your story is named “Valentine” and he’s an evil magic user who has been dead for sixteen years (the age of our secretly magic protagonist) and the main characters are afraid to even say his name...yeah, it doesn’t exactly take a genius to figure out where all of this comes from.

Now all this is frustrating, but it’s also hilarious. I mean, the big bad of the story is called Valentine. VALENTINE. And I actually laughed out loud for several minuted when I first read the name “Hodge Starkweather” to myself. I still get a little chuckle typing this. Oh, and since the word “muggle” would have JK Rowling’s lawyers on her ass faster than light, the word Cassandra Clare uses for non-magic people is...”Mundie”. It’s short for “mundane”. Like...first of all this is objectively hilarious. Second, mundane just means “normal”. If the Shadowhunter society is magical, then aren’t they they mundane ones? I know humans don’t have magic, but we still figured how to like, fly and stuff. That has to count for something. If I saw a dog that taught himself how to read, I wouldn’t like, make fun of him for not also being able to talk. I’d be like “Shit! That’s a pretty impressive fucking dog!” like what the fuck?

Anyway, this is all just a roundabout way to say that obviously this used to be a HP fic that through some twist of fate landed a publishing deal. And you know, it’s not as brain-meltingly bad as 50SoG, so who cares? Cassandra Clare’s just having fun, so who cares if her writing gets published?

Well...

The Plagiarism

So, yeah, she plagiarized lot. Like a lot. The Draco Trilogy has lines of dialogue taken directly from shows like Red Dwarf, Black Adder, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as from Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novels. Quoting shows apparently used to be pretty common in the early days of fanfiction, so there is context to consider here, but it gets worse. Cassandra Clare lifted almost a whole chapter, nearly word for word, from an out-of-print fantasy series called The Hidden Land, by Pamela Dean. On top of that, Clare was sued in 2016 by author Sherrilyn Kenyon, whose Darkhunter series predates Clares Shadowhunters series. (And for the record, Clare’s series was originally titled Darkhunters. Yikes.) You guys can read the full(ish) stories here and here.

I Guess I Have To Keep Talking About The Plot Now

Sigh. So after Hodge Starkweather (A+ naming there) tells them about Valentine, he explains that Shadowhunters are angel-human hybrids? Or something? They’re special, and they fight demons. Also faries, vampires, werewolves, all that stuff exists. We’re stuck with the Shadowhunters, however, because God has punished me for my hubris, and my work is never done. (Oh look, I just plagiarized Brian David Gibert. I’m a real author now, like Cassandra Clare!) The Shadowhunters were started thousands of years ago by a man named, I shit you not, Jonathan Shadowhunter. JONATHAN. FUCKING. SHADOWHUNTER. Why the fuck am I trying to come up with clever names for my characters? I should just name them all “Alex Clarasbook” and call it a fucking day. Fuck.

Anyway after a thrilling conversation with Alec-Who-Has-No-Personality, we find out that he does have a personality! His personality is that he hates humans. Oh, excuse me, “mundies.” Yep, that’s the best way to make a character relatable. Just make ‘em fucking racist. It’s okay though, it’s only magical racism so it evens out. Have I mentioned that this story has no poc?

(Oh also Clary’s mom was a Shadowhunter, but 1. I hate Clary and 2. literally a newborn baby could’ve figured that out, so)

Clary and Jace leave the Institute to go back to Clary’s house, and Clary slaps Jace, an act that brings me such joy that only the birth of my firstborn child will ever eclipse it, and even then, it will be it close tie. The moment is quickly over, however, as Clary immediately feels bad about it, because again, she is not a character. She’s a Walmart mannequin created for Jace to make out with. Then she sees two girls looking at Jace, and, in what can only be called the true essence of the book, “Clary turned instant traitor against her gender.” Just as a reminder, Clary sucks.

Anyway they get to her house, kill a giant, talk to a witch, yaddah yaddah yaddah. Basically nothing happens except the inevitable unraveling of my mental processes. I had to stop reading there because I have better things to do with my life besides destroying the few braincells I have left. I’ll post the next part soon, as soon as I can read more than five pages without wanting to fling the book off a seaside cliff into the frothing mist that obscures the swell and crash of the unforgiving waves. Until then, please enjoy some of my favorite bad lines.

“Jace chuckled. Clary could tell that he had come up behind her and was standing there with his hands in his pockets, grinning that infuriating grin of his.” (She knew all that without looking?)

“Attacked. Clary wondered if this was a euphemism for ‘murdered’.” (Clary you’re literally the dumbest person I’ve ever met.)

“Clary let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding in.” (This may just be me being petty, but I hate this cliche so much.)

“‘You may be the only guy my age I’ve ever met who knows what bergamot is, much less that it’s in Earl Grey tea.” (Ah yes, that famous stereotype, that boys don’t know about tea. Oh, you like tea? Name three kinds. I hear sexist gatekeeping is a real problem in the tea community. I am not having a good time.)

“Dorothea chuckled. ‘It’s good to see a young woman eat her fill. In my day, girls were robust, strapping creatures, not twigs like they are nowadays.’ ‘Thanks,’ Clary said. She thought of Isabelle’s tiny waist and felt suddenly gigantic.” (Cassandra Clare’s super feminist, guys. You can tell because she’s always pitting her female characters against each other.)

Rating So Far

3/10-Bad. Jonathan Shadowhunter gets an entire 10/10. I’m going to have my name legally changed to Jonathan Shadowhunter.

I think there is indeed more trans Hux than trans Kylo out there, but I still managed to find some. Beware that I haven’t read most of the fics and therefore cannot say anything about their content. I also recommend of course you read the autor’s warnings;)

Home For Christmas - ML Secret Santa

Gosh, I hope my recipient hasn’t thought they were left out. Today is my posting day and guess what? @nyxavalon! Iiii am your Secret Santa! And I’ve whipped up a story for you! Hope you enjoy~

Rating: G Genre: Angst, Fluff, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort Pairing(s): None (sort of) Summary: Christmas has come once again... after the battle between Miraculous has ended. (Identities Revealed) Warning: There are some Season Two spoilers so proceed at your own risk.

“Yeah… Yeah, I’m okay, Chlò.”

He remembers it was just a few years ago…

“I’m sure you could still fly out here and join us.”

How lively the manor could be with him, his mother and father, and the staff.

“No, it’s really okay! It’s not just going to be me, I promise.”

When his mother disappeared, his father still got a tree, but he didn’t join in on the decorating like before.

“If you say so. Ugh, looks like I have to go. Daddy wanted to try scuba diving… I’ll make sure to send you a photo.”

And now…

“Haha, I’ll be looking forward to it. Talk to you later, Chlò.”

Adrien hung up after her hurried ‘Later!’ and lowered his cell phone.

The Manor was dark and cold and empty. He had sent the staff home to spend their Christmas with their families, it was only fair. His right ring finger, once commonly adoring a silver ring, was bare. His time – no, their time being heroes had come to an end and Miraculous had gone with it.

Hawkmoth was…

His father was…

… The point was he’d never have to see that man again. After everything, after the intentional manipulation and neglect, it would be much too soon. It was their victory, but maybe it could have waited.

Nothing but his footsteps echoed as he walked up the stairs and down the hall, pristine white walls bathed in twilight’s fallen night and the fainter, colorful hues from twinkling fairy lights decorating other abodes near. It would be about this time a certain little black cat god would whine for Camembert or suggest they go out, but there was nothing. Subconsciously, he rubbed his finger and the smooth skin left pale by the ring he wore for years.

Nothing…

In his bedroom, he stood before the window panels and stared outside. It was really beautiful, seeing the quiet snowfall with the few stars that managed to shine through Paris’s light pollution. He could look beyond the gate and see beyond his walls a warm and still awake city that exemplified all the brightness and love it was known for. It was not a city he could join from his own prison, as self-imposed as it was.

He should have known.

How could he have not known his father was the villain?

Considering how frequent he had been absent and probably just waiting to akumatize someone. All those times when there wouldn’t be a show for months, there really was no excuse… and at some point, he had figured out he was Chat Noir. That man had known and still fought them – fought him, tempted him to join his side – to bring his mother back. His mother whom he’d lied about being missing because missing implied being able to be found alive or dead. She was gone and never coming back, and honestly, that was something he had excepted where his father had refused.

But that was the power of love, wasn’t it?

It could drive even the sanest man insane and become an obsession, couldn’t it? It was frightening… how much it made his – made Gabriel not care anymore.

Eyes falling, Adrien breathed slowly.

In and out, hoping it would lessen the aching, but the winking lights and faintest lull of Christmas music soon overpowered by the Notre Dame’s bells. He counted the echoing chimes and felt his heart sink further and further, the cold sweeping over his shoulders like a cowl he couldn’t remove. It latched onto his neck and covered his head, squeezing itself over his shoulders to fasten around his body. He wanted it off, but he also understood he deserved it.

“… Merry Christmas,” he whispered, wanting to say ‘Claws out!’ and dash along the rooftops again. No one would be looking for him – no one would pretend to be concerned about his whereabouts. The city could forgive him for the sins of his father, but people did not. Forehead pressing against the glass, he bit his lip.

He wanted to be forgotten and for everything to be over; he didn’t want to be alone and he couldn’t take it anymore.

Eyes snapping open at the jarring ring of the Manor’s doorbell, Adrien stepped away from the glass and half-turned to his bedroom door, one eyebrow raised. Blinking, he didn’t proceed to answering the call until the second, the third, and finally, the fourth ring forced him to walk back. Whoever came calling tonight was persistent, but it was also Christmas. He could see what they wanted and perhaps give them what they want; and if it was him, that was fine.

The intercom connected to the doorbell was in Gabriel’s old office, the room stripped bare of possessions he refused to keep and gladly gave to the police as evidence. Any actual designer work on the computer had been returned to him via chip which he hadn’t bothered keeping either. Marinette might’ve been sore at his father’s actions, but his designs were still begrudgingly admirable. Approaching the lone intercom still affixed to the barren desk, Adrien tapped the button to turn it on and answer.

“Hello…?”

Hopefully, he managed to keep his tone curious.

“Adrien Ascil Agreste! You better open this door right now! It’s freezing!”

“… Alya?”

“Ugh, I can’t feel my arms. Dude, open the door…”

“Wait, what? Nino, what are you both--?”

“Adrien, you forgot to actually lock the gate.”

“Marinette? U-Uh, gimme a sec…!”

Bewildered at why they were on his doorstep, he literally jogged from the office and to the front door, pulling it open. He quickly moved aside as the three charged inside followed by others: their parents and siblings, friends from school and their families, and then other friends from around Paris. He winced as the lights were turned on, the previous silence concussed by voices, crinkling paper, and bells. Cold fled from the heat spreading into the corners and the numb scent with it as various smells of pine, roast, and sweets filled the foyer.

Adrien’s head snapped around, wide eyes still trying to process what was occurring until a hand gently pressed against his shoulder… followed by a clap to his back and another shoulder bumping his unoccupied one. Marinette, Nino, and Alya stood around him, watching the Manor become besieged by festivities. A tree was being erected in the corner by the Gorilla and Tom, Manon, Etta, and Ella eagerly standing aside to help decorate with Rose, Ali, and Juleka. Sabine and Marlena walked with Wang, Fred, and Nadja towards the dining room with plates of food, Mylène and Ivan assisting. Nino’s cousin Chris, their teacher Caline Bustier, and even Jagged Stone and Penny, and he still didn’t understand.

“What’s…?”

“It’s Christmas, of course,” Alya said, her lip quirked and eyebrow raised. “What did you think we were going to do? Not be here?”

“… Yes?” Adrien meekly answered, almost flinching at the looks all three of them gave him next. “I mean, if anything, you would’ve spent Christmas at home with your families while I just… I don’t know. Why should I celebrate when my father terrorized Paris? I let him get away with--”

“Dude, that was your dad,” Nino cut him off, his brows furrowed. “And no one blames you for his actions. Perfect poster boy Adrien? No one could see you cooperating with him.”

“Well, that…” Marinette started before leaning a little closer. “And Ladybug may have put in a word that she was positive on her Miraculous that Adrien wasn’t involved with any of Hawkmoth’s actions.”

“You did?”

He stumbled as the small young woman bumped him, making him stagger into Nino. Eyes wide, he watched hers roll. “Of course. I mean, I couldn’t tell people that Adrien was my partner fighting against Hawkmoth, but I think it’s enough that the superheroine that’s been protecting Paris for a while has an idea on who’s really involved.”

“There are some skeptics,” Alya chimed in, shaking her head with an exaggerated sigh. “Ladybug has a crush on Adrien, Ladybug letting him off because he’s handsome, stupid nonsense like that…”

“This city doesn’t know their superheroes as well as they think,” Nino scoffed. “If they knew what Ladybug had thought about her partner on the first day of school…”

“N-Nino…!”

Adrien heard them laughing, but he still didn’t understand. He didn’t deserve any of this. He didn’t deserve any of them.

“Adrien…?”

He blinked, noticing that the three were standing before him and the activities around them had settled down. They weren’t alone in the room, but everyone else was now talking quietly amongst themselves. Marinette, Alya, and Nino seemed to be watching him and he wondered if he was supposed to say something. However, Marinette started before he could decide.

“We know you probably blame yourself for all this – for not being able to see that it was your father, but you know we understand,” she spoke softly, pulling a small box out of her pocket. It looked familiar. “Parents aren’t supposed to be the bad guys after all, even if they want to do everything they can for their children. You’ve sacrificed more than any of us to bring peace back to Paris, so much that it meant being alone for Christmas when you don’t deserve that.”

“Yeah, man. It’s not fair that you get the raw end of the deal,” Nino added and Alya had a coy grin on her face.

“Which is why we… may have spoken to someone before today about, I don’t know, maybe patrolling for one more evening or for the next few years,” she hummed, but Adrien wasn’t even looking at her as she spoke because his eyes were glued to the box Marinette was holding. Its dark mahogany and the familiar intricate Chinese painted detail sealed within lacquer finish on top shined even in the dim light, and he felt his eyes sting as the box opened to reveal the ring resting within the red velvet interior. His eyes rising, he noticed Marinette’s earrings, Nino’s bracelet, and watched Alya draw out her necklace from her shirt collar. Blue, green, and violet eyes of three small kwami appeared as each watched from their hiding places: Marinette’s collar, Nino’s headphones, and Alya’s pocket.

Adrien looked at the ring again, the green paw inviting him, calling to him to pick it up… and he only squinted at the green light that shone as the ring turned silver.

Stretching up with a mighty yawn, Plagg’s whiskers twitched before he opened his eyes.

“That was a nice nap. Hey kid, got any Camembert? You know I’m not transforming you until you gimme some.”

season three episode eight

Unfortunately, this was definitely a building block episode. Fortunately, however, we did get to meet Jared’s slut-shaming mom, his shockingly apathetic ex-wife, and watch Alyssa further cement herself as my least favorite person on the planet earth. Let’s cut to the feeling!

You know when you wake up and you’re violently hungover, and you’re regretting the night before, and your only option is to stay in bed and order food and wish for death? That’s exactly how we get to see Juliette the morning after Jared’s party. Relatable kween! As she lays in bed with a lot of pizza but zero hope, she tries to justify her behavior at Alex’s. It sucks because I think it was warranted to push him in the pool, but given her (other) recent violent behavior, it just makes her look like a meth head. Especially since no one believes that Alex was actually on the phone with her. Which is SHOCKING. But I’ll get to that later. Speaking of Alex, now we’re seeing Alex and Alyssa the day after the blowout. Alyssa starts to question why Juliette and Alex were even talking in the first place. Alex explains that he sent Boring Robby some screenshots from Juliette. This should ring major alarms for Alyssa! Like if Alex doesn’t care at all, why would he do that? Alex insists that Juliette is just “desperate for anything,” and Alyssa stupidly accepts this explanation. Sorry, who’s desperate?

Nothing like a boozy lunch with your mom! That sounded sarcastic but I’m so serious. Mom, let’s do that when you come visit me soon! Except instead of calling my ex-spouse who cheated on me during combat a slut, we can stick to lighter conversation topics. So yeah, after Jared’s mom fondly recalled the time she called his ex-wife, Jessica, a “slut,” we learn that Jessica cheated on Jared during his deployment. Jessica is starting to sound like a Messica! Then Jared breaks the news that Jessica is visiting him in Siesta Key, and suffice to say his mother is not pleased. My ex-wife is not a phase, mom.

Later that day, we see Jessica arriving at dinner with Jared. They laugh about how horrible they are together when they drink, and then immediately order drinks. Good plan! After dinner, Jared brings Jessica to meet the gang. Amanda, Brandon, Madisson, Chloe and G Baby are all anxiously awaiting the arrival of Jared’s infamous ex. As soon as everyone says hi, the boys peel off to grab drinks, and Chloe immediately asks Jessica if she’s heard about Jared’s fling with Kelsey. She doesn’t waste one second, that Chloe! Not only has Jessica not heard of Kelsey, but she also apparently has no idea that Jared has PTSD. Which is strange, because if my ex-husband was on a reality show, I’d definitely watch, and if you’ve seen any episode with Jared, you know about his struggles with PTSD. Jessica must have felt like an idiot!! You think you know someone, and then it turns out that you don’t at all. I can’t help but immediately think of that time in Stephanie Meyer’s final novel in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn, when Police Chief Charlie Swan sees Bella for the first-time post-change. From Charlie’s POV, his daughter went on a honeymoon to a strange Brazilian island and then caught a very serious virus that caused her to be quarantined from everyone for a lengthy period of time. Finally, enough was enough, and Police Chief Swan said, “screw protocol!”, and he went to the Cullen’s to see his daughter. When he saw her, his heart sank. That was Bella, but she looked different. She had an adopted baby who looked just like her, but the timing of the pregnancy didn’t add up. In that moment, Charlie Swan knew that while this may be his daughter, it certainly wasn’t the daughter he knew. And that was how exactly how Jessica felt during this gossip sesh.

1 full year of wedded bliss

Something about Juliette is that while she is completely psychotic, violent, and potentially an alcoholic, she’s definitely not a liar. So when I see Chloe and Amanda in a pool, drinking literal water from cocktail glasses and saying that they “don’t believe Juliette” in regards to the phone call with Alex? I’m on the phone, calling Gary Kompothecras himself, suing for slander. It’s like, “I’m just done believing her.” Wait, seriously? Why? Alex is a proven pathological liar. Juliette is simply and factually not a liar. Based on those facts, let’s make an educated guess and decide who is lying. Later, Chloe and Alex head to the Crescent Club to get ready for the big bar opening that night. They briefly discuss Juliette, as always, since they seemingly have nothing better to talk about, and Chloe reveals that she’s meeting up for lunch with Juliette to hear her side of the story. After all, Juliette did break her $8 Amazon sunglasses. Chloe deserves an explanation. Then, after continuing to trash Juliette for a solid five minutes, Chloe tells Alex that Juliette “needs people like me in her life that are honest with her,” and they continue doing nothing to set up for the big night.

Juliette shows up to lunch with a gift and receipts. Text/call receipts, that is. After giving her gift to Chloe (a replacement of her wildly inexpensive sunglasses), Juliette pulls out the phone and proves that she was, in fact, on the phone with Alex for six hours. I’d like to give Chloe a shout out for truly sleuthing – yeah, Chloe, I saw you check the contact and make sure it was actually Alex’s number. Imagine if Juliette had just changed the name in her phone. After admitting that Juliette, was, in fact, telling the truth, Chloe decides to confront Alex at the bar opening. Perfect timing!

Here we go – it’s Crescent Club time! Amanda rolls up with BG, which is weird since I kind of thought they had a falling out, but okay. JJ is also there, and it’s just a matter of time before Brandon freaksoutté. But first, Chloe pulls Alex aside. It’s truth time. Chloe explains that she saw the calls and knows that Alex and Juliette spoke on the phone for six hours. Alex, an aspiring lawyer, hits back with an incredible defense. “She called me, though.” Okay, someone call RBG and get this man on the Supreme Court, effective immediately. Alex realizes he needs to tell Alyssa before Juliette does, so he pulls her aside and admits what he’s done. Alyssa seems, in a word, peeved. Peeved, but not hideously angry which is what a normal person would be. After a quick five-minute recap, they’re all good, which is extremely concerning. But, as Alex said, “emotionally, nothing was gained or lost” during the calls, so like, Alyssa really has no need to worry.

Is this Juliette or Santa Claus because she’s arriving to the Crescent Club bearing more gifts! After giving Alyssa a replacement bathing suit top, Chloe inexplicably rips the new top for no reason. Nice. Seriously though, I’m proud of Juliette for making amends and pushing forward. Ygg! Maybe she’s learning from Kelsey, who up until tonight, has made me so proud! Unfortunately, Messica gets the best of her. When she meets Jared’s ex-wife, the tension in the air is so thick you could cut it. Kelsey asks if the two are going to be sad to leave each other, and when Jessica explains that they’re not very “emotional,” Kelsey blatantly questions their relationship altogether by saying, “Well then was it ever real?” Ouch! That was super intrusive, aggressive, and uncalled for especially since she told Jared to fuqoffé a week ago and chose Jake. Oh no Kels.

We leave that awkward love triangle for another awkward love triangle – BG, JJ, and Amanda. BG randomly decides to confront JJ about Amanda. Brandon, what have we learned from the Jake/Kelsey/Jared debacle? This almost never ends in the desired result! After Brandon tries to stake claims over Amanda, JJ gently reminds him that Amanda owes neither of them anything, and she has been blatantly clear about the fact that she’s not being exclusive with either of them. Amanda has lied to BG about hooking up with JJ, so he’s got a right to be mad about that, but overall, he needs to drop this narrative. No one cares. We all know he’s really upset about his first love dating someone old enough to be her father, but to be frank, no one cares. You cheated on Madisson! You led her into the arms of Ish! Now get overetté!

Juliette approaches Alyssa to apologize more in-depth. She acknowledges that her behavior was out of hand, and explains that she never wants to come in between Alex and Alyssa. (Who aren’t even dating!!) Keep in mind – Juliette could easily show Alyssa the proof that Alex is still VERY invested in her. Alex feared that she might, which is the only reason he came clean to Alyssa in the first place. But nope, even after Alyssa antagonizes her and says that Alex shows her all of the texts she sends, Juliette still remains calm and simply says, “I wouldn’t be sending him things that I’m not getting in return.” Which is a very fair point! Instead of pausing to think about the situation logically, Alyssa tells Juliette to “have a nice life.” Ooh, BURN! Now we wait for Tuesday – get excited about double the episodes and double the drama.

The Top 5 Must Play RPGs for Every Video Game Console

The gaming market is monstrous. Right now there are six consoles, three handhelds, and the ever present PC you can buy games for. That’s 10 different ways you can get your game on, so if you’re someone who doesn’t have the ways or means to buy all 10 platforms and every halfway decent game that arrives for any of them, you’re probably wondering which way you should go to get the most bang for your buck. I’m a bit of a gamer nerd, and so for you, I’ve collected the top five available games (in the stores now) for each console for each particular genre. Based on reviews, user comments, and my personal experience, these are the best ways to go.

This round: RPGs. The Japanese RPG market exploded in the 32-64 bit days, blowing out with a new game seemingly every week. You can blame Square for that one, bringing to the stores amazing game after amazing game, which immediately spurned every other company to release whatever dreck they could muster to keep you pumping money into their pockets. Nowadays there are hundreds of options out there, and the Japanese market isn’t the only one around. North American companies have their own answers to the RPG boom and now it’s a veritable flood of options. Here are the top five for each option you’ve got.

PlayStation 2 – The PlayStation brand name has been the home of quality RPGs since PS1 first rolled out with Suikoden and Final Fantasy games in the mid- the 90s. This list was hard because there are so many left off. Dark Cloud 2, Final Fantasy X, the Shin Megami Tensei games and much more deserve recognition, but alas these are also long as hell, so if you had more than 5, when would you ever finish them. You may notice I exclude the PS3, but I can’t really offer any PS3 RPGs for you until they’ve actually been created. We’re waiting.

1. Shadow Hearts Covenant – The Shadow Hearts series took on a serious following after this entry, one of the greatest RPG releases of the generation. It’s taken on the fantasy RPG genre blended into the realms of reality, bleeding over in church and demonology lore. Taking place in the 19th Century and following the legend of a young woman and her unfortunate destiny, it can be enjoyed alone or along with its predecessors Koudelka and Shadow Hearts (I).

2. Disgaea – This is probably the best strategy RPG released for any console ever. Released by Atlus, a brand name that has grown in and of itself of recent years to the respectability that names like Square and Level 5 now carry with their games, Disgaea is about the young prince of hell and his quest to regain his domain after being awoken. With more than 200 hours of gameplay here, count on playing for days on days. And it’s funnier than hell. These are great characters.

3. Suikoden III – The Suikoden series is the cult series. Of course, it’s slowly sliding out of cult status and into the mainstream with releases occurring every couple of years since this one. The best in the series with the possible exception of Suikoden II, Suikoden III tells the story of a huge cast of characters, all intricately entwined with one another. You play through the tale of their war, but as seen through the eyes of each character. Truly epic.

4. Final Fantasy XII – The newest release, released only two weeks before the PlayStation 3’s release, this game redefines the epic scope of prior Final Fantasies, literally reaching for the stars. Each character is fully realized and a part of the action, their story an intricate part of the game. There’s no fluff here, and the rebuild of the decades-old RPG formula was all for the better, working for the complete and total betterment of the game and hopefully the series.

5. DragonQuest VIII – Dragon Quest has always been huge in Japan, but only now did it find the same success here in the US. Dragon Quest VIII is the huge (extremely huge) result of Square Enix’s jump to full 3D glory in their series. The graphics are incredible, the characters hilarious and deeply involving, and the story arresting. The battles aren’t half bad either. And the usual monster catching glory is intact. A long game, it will keep you busy for days.

Gamecube (and Wii) – The Gamecube got shorted on the RPG options, much like its big brother the N64. Nintendo lost a lot of their clout with the RPG crowd when Squaresoft jumped ship in the 90s and they’re still trying to earn it back…so far to little success. But, the future looks bright, as Square Enix is finally producing games for the Big N, and Nintendo’s own work includes more forays into the RPG market. Here’s hoping for more, because the Wii is perfect for the format.

1. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – The newest Zelda adventure, Twilight Princess, is by far the best reason to own a Nintendo Wii. The game is a masterpiece on almost every level, to the point I’m almost willing to call it the greatest game ever made. We’ve heard this a lot, that this game is the greatest. That it surpasses what Ocarina accomplished 8 years ago. And as my own favorite game, it’s hard to ever put anything above Ocarina in terms of scope, depth, and innovation. No need to go into detail. Read my review of it here for more thoughts on why it’s so amazing.

2. Tales of Symphonia – The first really good RPG for the Gamecube, and still one of the only ones really. The newest entry in the hugely popular (in Japan) Tales saga, Symphonia was a huge, fun, well-told game. The characters were fun, the battle system is one of the best around, and the action was fully inclusive and crafted a long game. Symphonia was the Gamecube owning RPG fan’s one saving grace.

3. Skies of Arcadia Legends – Originally released for the Dreamcast, Skies of Arcadia was given a second life on the Gamecube, again fated to anonymity due to the failure of the console. This is a great game. It tells the story of two sky pirates who must traverse the sky ocean and save the world from a shattering war and so on. You attempt throughout the game to build your pirate rank and build up your ship. It was one of Dreamcast’s must have games and the same for Gamecube. Unfortunately so few actually had it, and now it’s not exactly easy to find.

4. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker – The infamous Wind Waker. Nintendo’s foray into cell shading and the horrible foray into ocean mechanics. This game is still amazing. It’s Zelda after all, but it’s flawed on more than the basic levels. It’s hard to get around. The ocean is huge, and the game is short. But the parts you play, in between sailing around Hyrule are beautiful and incredibly fun.

5. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door – The Big N rounds out the five with another in-house effort. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was a return to the Paper Mario fun they coined in the N64 days, this time around with the RPG elements the game seems to work best with. Incredibly easy yes, but fun as hell at the same time.

Xbox (and X360) – The Xbox, not surprisingly saw no Japanese development. Every game listed below was produced in English Speaking countries, mostly Canada actually. The style is noticeably different, but the quality is equally incredible. The strive for realism by Western developers can be seen in each of these entries. Although the lack of humor is equally as prescient.

1. Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion – The Xbox 360 has some serious horsepower. Not only is there room to spare, but the graphic output is insane at the time, and what better way to show this off than with an Elderscrolls game. Monstrous, huge worlds in which you can freely roam wherever you want and interact with your environment. This game is huge and intense. Hundreds of hours can be spent just wandering around and completing the main quest. As for getting the rest done. Who knows how long you could spend on there.

2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Star Wars games were starting to get a bad rap for a while until Bioware arrived with the first full-fledged Star Wars RPG. Built on the click and wait for the action of the D&D ruleset games, KOTOR was a brilliant game that took Star Wars fans back a few thousand years to the height of the Jedi/Sith wars. It also had one of the most surprising and amazing endings in any game..ever.

3. Elderscrolls III: Morrowind – And another Elder scrolls game. This one was equally as huge as its sequel and had just as amazing graphics for its time. Elderscrolls truly stretches the imagination in terms of open world RPG exploration and making a game that will take a long time to finish. A truly wonderful game.

4. Jade Empire – Set in a fictional ancient China, Jade Empire comes from the makers of Knights of the Old Republic, and while not nearly as large in scope or length, the game utilizes an array of different combat styles and elements that make it sheer fun to play. It’s shorter and simpler than the original games from Bioware, but they make up for it with the attention to detail and the battle system upgrades.

5. Fable – Touted as an amazing achievement in world interface, Fable turned out to be a little bit of a letdown. It was smaller, shorter, and less engaging than what was claimed, but it was still a solid, fun game to play. Starting as a bland adventure you could become either entirely good or entirely evil through the actions committed during a quest. The characters are generic, the quests forgettable, but the options given to play through them all are still fun. The ending, however, leaves something to be desired, and they could have done with a few more reasons to openly explore. For a sandbox RPG, it was surprisingly linear.

Game Boy Advance – Yup, no DS games. I imagine soon, with the release of the new Pokemon game, and the surprising announcement of Dragon Quest IX coming exclusively to the DS, the RPG options there will explode, but for now your best bet in the RPG realm on handhelds is with the Game Boy Advance. Here are a few of the best.

1. Golden Sun – It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not legendary. But, it’s good solid fun, and for the size and expectations o f a handheld console it’s still pretty fun. I enjoyed it for a few reasons. First off, the gameplay is top notch. The battle system is built around a simple premise and sticks with it, but it’s still fun. The story is nothing special but it reminded me a lot of the 8-bit glory days, keeping me involved without making it impossible to keep up when I have to turn the game off every 20 minutes. Solid play and go action

2. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire – Pokemon has been around for almost 10 years now, a regular entry in the Gameboy RPG market, really the only entry in that market, and a damn good one. By the time this pair was released (the usual duplicate games with slightly different monsters in each), the same gameplay was reused a good four times and starting to get a little old, but it’s still sound gameplay, and who doesn’t like to collect as much of something as they can. I’m older yes, but I still enjoy the mindless capture and battle system of Pokemon. It’s cathartically simple.

3. Final Fantasy IV – It’s technically a port, but a damn good port at that. I loved this game back in the days on the SNES and the idea to bring the 16-bit Final Fantasies to the GBA made me as happy as can be. This was a game I love to play, but feel goofy loading into my PS2 and sitting down to play. It’s a perfect bus play, and it plays just as great as in 1992. The classic tale of Cecil and the Red Knights never fails to capture my attention from start to finish. Of course, when Final Fantasy VI is released, I might have to replace this with that one, as we all know that VI is the greatest of them all.

4. Riviera: The Promised Land – Atlus has been bashing the PS2 market with top notch games for three plus years now, with their fantastic strategy and alchemy RPG games. They bring Riviera to the GBA with the same pedigree, a solid RPG that plays to the GBA’s strengths as well as any. It’s essentially a screen to screen game. You don’t control your surroundings so much as go from page to page within them, but the battle system is amazing and the different options and acquires immense. The story, like any Atlus game, is the real selling point and actually got me to play through it twice.

5. Final Fantasy Tactics – The portable version of the PSone classic has sucked more time from my life than any GBA game I’ve ever played. The 300+ missions are each 30-60 minutes long and the customization options equal length. This is a long game with a lot of gameplay and a fun little story. You’re Marche, you’ve been sucked into a book into the magical land of Ivalice and now you are a knight. Go!

PlayStation Portable – When the PSP first released fanboys dreamed of amazing ports that would bring their favorite games now out of print back to life in handheld format. At least one made the leap, but for the most part, RPG development on the PSP has been lackluster, and while Japan gets the Suikoden I and II pack and promises of Final Fantasies, we wait for a decent anything to play. Final Fantasy compilation anyone? Anyone at all?

1. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth – One of the most sought after games from the PSone days, Valkyrie Profile was an amazing RPG that no one played and then no one could play as it was out of print. Ranging from $100 and up on eBay, the promise of a re-release for the PSP was a godsend for fans out there always interested but too poor to afford it. It’s a solid game at that. With rebuilt cinematics and PSP controls, this entry leads into the new PS2 game wonderfully and finally lets the rest of us play through Lenneth’s adventure.

2. Monster Hunter Freedom – Never a real big fan of the Monster Hunter games, I can still see their draw. You go and you hunt monsters. Simple as that. There’s little to hold you up, and there’s online play. It’s like Pokemon without the pesky storyline or purpose.

3. Ys: The Ark of Napishtim – A port of a port. This was originally released for the PS2 and before that, the PC, and has been watered down in between. The same classic Ys gameplay is intact, overland map, onscreen battles and fun little characters in a charming, if simple story. It’s good solid fun for a portable and tells a decent story. Even if the controls are a little broken.

4. Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade – One of the launch releases with the PSP, Untold Legends is an overhead hack and slash RPG without a conscious. It doesn’t strive for amazing storyline or gameplay, just simple hack and slashes glory and it does it pretty well. It was fun because it was simple, made in a very short development cycle from the time the PSP was announced. Oddly enough, though, the sequel was nearly as good.

5. Tales of Eternia – Alright, technically it still hasn’t been released in America, but you can import it from Europe and play the English language version (or Japan if you speak Japanese). But, it’s a tales game, a pretty good one at that. Technically it has been released here too, as Tales of Destiny 2 in 2000. Unfortunately, it got completely ignored as the gaming world moved on to the PS2. This is a great game though and perfect for the PSP. Complete and intact are the great Tales battle system and one of the better Tales plots. Saving the world from the Great War was never quite so fun as in this one.

PC -The PC has always been a home for the more hardcore of gamers. The cost of constant upgrades and intensity of a PC game are legendary, and only the most hardcore amongst us are capable of keeping up. Accordingly, the games below match that mindset, though more than one of these games managed to break free of the limitations and become monstrous worldwide phenomena. I’m looking at you Blizzard.

1. World of Warcraft – Okay, so duh right? Well, some of you are probably palpitating over my choosing this above some other MMORPG, but too bad. Everyone plays this one, including myself and it’s just plain fun. Having spent hours of my life in this game and knowing that I can go back whenever I want without fear of being destroyed because of the MMORPG laws of survival (never leave), this is a great pick up and play a game in a genre where that almost never exists. Huge, tons to do, and always fun even when you’re grinding, WoW is still the best.

2. Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn – The Baldur’s Gate games are some of the best RPGs to come out of the PC age of D&D ruleset RPGs. It’s big, it’s long, it’s fun as hell. The challenge of figuring out what to do, how to upgrade your characters and make the game the most it can be were always the number one reasons to play these. The story is pretty awesome too. Don’t forget the Dragon. That dragon is a bitch.

3. Diablo II – Diablo II stole my entire summer my sophomore year of high school. This game was amazing. It took everything Diablo did and blew it up times ten. The ability to find and receive unique weapons that 1000 of your friends would never find kept you playing over and over again. And it was simple. Click, click, right click. F1. That’s it. Nothing to it. And when you finally unlocked the Cow level, then you were the true God of Diablo.

4. Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion – Many of you probably can’t even play this yet. I still can’t. I only know of it because I have a friend who upgrades his computer ever three weeks seemingly. This game is a beast of the highest order, demanding a lot from your system but delivering even more. Hundreds of hours can be spent just wandering around and completing the main quest. As for getting the rest done. Who knows how long you could spend on there.

5. Neverwinter Nights – Another D&D ruleset game, but one of the best no less. It’s huge, monstrously huge. And tack on the expansions and you’ve got 200+ hours of action to play through. The biggest seller on this one though was the ability to craft and write your own adventures as a DM with the toolsets and host them online, ala D&D, but with graphics. The sequel doesn’t quite hold up to the original, but still, carries the same weight and fun factor.
