So, the thing is: this whole Hope!Hob thing has me by the throat and it shows no signs of letting go. Whoever came up with it first please know that I love you and cherish your existence.
Which is why I'm throwing this out into the void and hope (pun intended) someone's picking it up
The first thing with Hope as an anthropomorphic personification of a concept is, that not just anybody can be it. It's such a fundamentally human concept, that only a human can ascend to it. There's no Hope of the Endless just being because humanity knows there is, like it is with the seven that are.
Hope has to persevere first.
Which, of course, makes it even more difficult, since humans tend to die eventually. They're usually not around long enough to gather the amount of hope needed.
See, and this is the second thing: it's not just their own hope, that's important. It's the hope they inspire in others that will eventually tip the scale. However, this becomes increasingly hard with the dawn of every new century that makes the world a harsher, more unforgiving place, where it's difficult to hold onto hope let alone give it to others.
So no one's really expecting Hope to ascend anymore. Surely if they were needed that much it would have happened long ago.
(The Fates know, of course, as does Destiny. They had a lovely chat about it some seven hundred years ago, which led to Destiny giving his sister Death the idea of taking their brother out for a night "to get to know humanity on their terms". He doesn't tell anyone though. That would be cheating and it's far too much fun to watch what happens before him.)
The change is so gradual, that no one will notice for more than six hundred years.
A boy is born, round-cheeked and - his mother insists - smiling. During the pregnancy, all were sure he wouldn't make it, that his mum wouldn't make it, but he clung to life with much more power than his little body should hold. It gave the village he grew up in hope as well. Surely if he could make it in spite of hunger and plague and war, then all was not lost. Surely some of them would survive this.
(Some of them did, but their village was lost for many years. A young man had convinced those who hadn't died from the plague or starvation to live somewhere else, start somewhere fresh where death wouldn't haunt them. He helped them get settled before he himself left to fight in the king's war.)
The boy is no longer a boy but a man when he crosses the Endless' path for the first time. A rare flicker of pride crosses Destiny's otherwise stoic face as the page in the book before him turns. His gentle nudge had been enough and things are put in motion as they should. His siblings are none the wiser.
Years pass and the first strands of hope are woven together. It's not enough yet - it will not be enough for many years - but a soldier giving hope to his brothers in arms is a powerful thing when mud and blood cling to them and death is never far away. He doesn't realise what he's doing but he continues on. After he learns that he really can't die he does what he can to ensure his friends live a life as long and happy as possible. Making sure they don't give up their will to fight is just the start of it.
Destiny's fingers dig into the book as he watches his brother meet the soldier-turned-printer (there's a cosmic poetry to it that only he can see but that he appreciates immensely nevertheless) for the first time. This is one of the few tests during the years they have to pass and it's possibly the most important one. The human has to give his brother hope, has to give hope to Dream of the Endless, who has seen all of humanity and carefully shields himself from them to not get lost.
The surge in hope is enormous that night. It inspires not only the man and anthropomorphic concept sitting next to a fireplace, but the entirety of humans spending their evening at the White Horse Tavern in London. Many of them leave with their hearts light and numerous dreams are fulfilled in the following months.
The next centuries aren't good ones. Destiny knew it would come to that. There's a natural cycle to it, a process of learning that is necessary for the man they are all waiting for. He focuses on himself, the hope he holds is mostly his own as he climbs the ranks all the way to the top only to fall down all the way.
In 1589 it is Dream who loses hope for a moment. He believes he knows this man better than he does himself, that he will give up in a hundred years after he has lived through the worst thing a man can suffer through.
The man loses hope twenty years later. He wants to give up, truly, but Destiny knows it won't come to that. There's simply a need for him to live through this if he one day should give hope to those experiencing the very same.
It is hard, Destiny almost feels sorry for him, but he knows he will endure. Still, he waits with bated breath as the man fights his way into the tavern and lights a spark of hope in his brother Dream that will burn forever now.
The first step is done.
The eighteenth century isn't a good one either. Destiny is bound to his books, he knows what will happen and he knows it will eventually have its place. He cannot change it, that is not within his power but he knows of the regret that is to come.
The man takes more hope than he gives. It diminishes all he had done in the centuries before and more. Destiny knows change will come, that the real work is about to start and he is glad that his brother makes his distaste known so clearly.
For a while things are quiet. The leaps and bounds won't happen until later, but the hope he gives is constant. He's but a single man and even though he uses his fortune to put it to good work, there's not much he can do on his own. But he continues to fight the fight as much as he is able, inspiring hope and newfound purpose one person at a time.
And he's not just fighting on one front. He buys a whorehouse, lets the women live there for free, makes sure they are as safe as possible while they attend to their customers. It isn't much, but it's enough for now when he kicks a john out in his underwear for harming one of the girls. He inspires hope in them too, when he helps those who want to find a new profession.
The hope amassed so much inside of him, that he takes a leap of faith when he shouldn't have. But this too is necessary - so Destiny knows - because it is time again for himself to prove how much he can hold onto hope.
And he holds on tight, refusing to let go. The beginning of the twentieth century is as hopeless as it can be and yet he never was more connected to the role he will one day take on than during this time.
It's stored in the refugees he houses, sleeping on the floor behind the bar himself because he doesn't need a bed. His back will recover. It surges when he leaves to fight only to find his purpose in forging documents for those who need them. There are thousands of people alive today only because he had nearly six hundred centuries to perfect the art of reinventing an identity.
(Many children born after that bear his name, be it Robert or Hope in the language of their parents. It's not much, but it cements his role, the threads of hope weaving themselves into a thick rope.)
The end of the century approaches with shattered and newborn hopes all over the world. It's a tumultuous time and Destiny wishes Hope would already be. He wouldn't be so limited, his powers confined to where his physical body is, but there is yet one thing to do.
The man clings to his hope like his fingers cling to his glass. He knows that Dream won't come, but he refuses to give up, not even after he learns that their place won't be for much longer.
Instead, he builds their temple.
It's as much a temple for Dream as it is for Hope, though he does not know either. Many patrons come to drown their sorrows, only to leave with a new sense of purpose and clarity for their dreams that had never been before.
To Destiny, who still watches with fascination, it's almost humorous. Of course, he knows what will happen eventually, that hopes and dreams always belong together, but it doesn't change his anticipation. He supposes it's a bit like humans with their entertainment like books or films. They know the ending, there's a pattern to it, and yet they enjoy them immensely.
Destiny watches Dream as well, the hope welling up as his raven soars through the cellar and then- But not all hope is lost. There is still the minuscule flame burning that had been ignited in the seventeenth century. An unyielding core, reinforced by defence willingly offered just thirteen decades before.
It is the Fates that alert Destiny when the small flame becomes even smaller even after Dream's escape, relying entirely on others. Something has to be done before the next darkness rises on the horizon and his lack of hope will cost them all everything.
It is again Death, who Destiny gently nudges in the direction of their brother. The books of the Endless are hard to read, even for him, so Destiny doesn't know whether or not his sister suspects anything, but she goes nevertheless. She shows their brother why they are here and sends him on his way to find hope. Or should he say, Hope?
As many of these things do, it happens in London. There's something about the city that's not quite magical, but that draws magic to it. Even humans can feel it on occasion and many seek it out without knowing why. It's great for the supernatural community there since there are so many weird humans there, they can just blend in.
The first who notices that something's changed is an angel in a bookstore. He himself is always full of hope for humanity that he nearly misses it, as an old friend steps in, a smile on his face as usual.
"One of my students, they're looking for a book. Do you have it, by any chance?" he asks, and the angel is unable to refuse his request, as reluctant as he usually is to give his books away.
But he knows with a certainty that is more than hope - almost tangible - that this one book in the hands of a stressed graduate student will impact the world in ways, not even he can fathom.
The angel only notices after his friend is gone. Hope lingers between his books, a golden thread that slowly weaves itself into the foundations of the building. (It causes a bit of a ruckus when Crowley drops by that night because he's somewhat allergic to hope, but he gets used to it rather quickly.)
Destiny refuses to look at what lies ahead in his books. He knows, of course, like he knows all, but it is breathtaking to watch the scale tip as it happens.
The thing that finally does it is nothing grand. One could argue that building the inn and waiting for Dream for more than three decades and the hope for the future of the world it inspires in Destiny's younger brother is so huge, that it is the real reason, but it's not what brings the final change.
It's a chat with a student, nothing more, nothing he hasn't done before a hundred times and more. It's about sweaters and curses of all things, and when the student leaves, she's so full of hope, that it changes the fabric of the universe.
The ascension isn't grand either. It happened so gradually over the last century that even Dream - who shares a bed with Hob - needs another week to realise what happened. He can't believe it at first but glows with love and hope as he comes to Destiny for confirmation.
There's no new realm since hope resides in dreams and human hearts, but he carves out a space for himself. The New Inn is radiating with his power so much, that it draws curious creatures near.
(Hope never sends them away, of course. He is for everyone. Instead, he sits them down, asks them not to scare the other patrons, and offers them a drink. When they leave, the world seems brighter for them.)
Hob himself doesn't really acknowledge the change in himself. The power inside of him is there - as it always was, in a way - and not much else has changed. He's still going to live as long as he can, he will still try to learn and be a better man than he was yesterday, and he will love his Stranger for the rest of his days.
And the part about inspiring people? Well, there was a reason he became a teacher in the first place, eh?

#the first time he did it in unmortricken i was like Fuck Yes and little did i know he would just keep doing it the whole time#DESPERATELY hoping they keep both of these things. i Love when characters have tiny little habits sprinkled in their actions#to me these things kinda sorta symbolise him no longer being afraid to really be himself#like he no longer has to hide certain things about himself that inside of the cfc wouldve made him appear ‘suspicious’#since he IS like so much different than any other morty ever#also barely related but like. em is fundamentally such a good character bc everytime we see him he’s feeling something different#in his first appearance he was cold and distant because at the time he was new to being free and was strictly focused on his goal and wasn’#even sure if it would work#in his second appearance he seemed hopeful and honest both of these things just being a trap to get the people of the citadel to trust him#and his old colder self unfurling near the end after he successfully becomes president#in his third appearance he seems giddy almost. he’s constantly giggling before and after sentences and he’s super eager to just Get The Hel#Out. and also to reveal the truth to morty prime. make it so that he doesn’t have to be the one to shoulder everything anymore.#and this fourth appearance. apart from a few little details he really just seems happy and comfortable. the entire episode he was just doin#whatever he wanted and nobody got in his way at all. and i could not be happier#normal about this character!#rick and morty#evil morty#rick and morty spoilers#odiespeak

#spheal#i wish i could post circular images on tumblr. because this one is deserving of a fully circular PNG. i could technically just take a#regular square image and then make the edges transparent to make it *effectively* a circle‚ but like… would that appeal?#if that would appeal then i'll do it. i don't think it would be *too* prohibitively hard. i would be willing to make an addendum#with a circular transparent image of spheal staring at the screen if enough of you want it. either way#this guy rolls everywhere and i think tumblr is gonna like that. i feel like this is gonna end up being a well-liked pokémon amongst tumblr#as in. i feel like. it already is. because. of how it is. i just don't know bc spheal isn't like. one of my favorites#it's cute don't get me wrong but it's just not one i think about all the time. it's one that i'll like if prompted but not unprompted#i'm gonna stop before i dig myself into a hole. i beat totk finally. it was very good and i honestly had way way more fun with it than i did#with botw. i have my criticisms obviously. it's not perfect it's not pmd. but it was very good. and now i've moved onto the next game in my#backlog. which is very long but i'm steadily working through it. hopefully i can get it done before i graduate this december and stop having#any time for the rest of my life ever forever to play video games. dreading that day. but uh#until then i will game. and hang out with my friends. and go on tumblr. and do all these things i like to do. until i no longer can#wow this got depressing i'm gonna Stop here. enjoy spheal

Imagine this okay.
Every time Doflamingo starts to act up in the Warlord meetings, Crocodile leans over and says something under his breath to him, and Doffy quiets down with the biggest grin on his face that unnerves everyone (well, unnerves them more than his normal grin). No one has ANY idea what Crocodile is saying to him FOR MONTHS but they're thankful SOMETHING is making that psycho chill the fuck out.
It continues to be a mystery until Mihawk ends up sitting next to Crocodile at a meeting one day. Croc's bass voice isn't really capable of whispering, so Mihawk hears this:
"I told you to knock it off or you won't get your way later."
Mihawk has no idea what the hell Crocodile is talking about, and doesn't care, so he forgets he even heard it by the end of that meeting.
However, during the next meeting, Doflamingo does little more than giggle to himself in the corner and doesn't make a single comment or cause a scene, while Crocodile sits stoically next to him smoking his cigar. EVERYONE is on edge after his unusually well-behaved manner, but once again, Mihawk is the only one who learns the reason.
They're all making their way out of the meeting and Doffy and Croc trail a few steps behind Mihawk, which allows Mihawk to have the absolute pleasure (read: horrifying displeasure) of hearing Doflamingo giggle this to Crocodile in what he probably thinks is a hushed voice (it wasn't):
"I behaved, which means I get to eat you out later, right?"
Mihawk walks faster. Why, God... why is always him that has to hear these things?

So, um, basing on what is the result of smashing an androids head open is in dbh, uhhhh. gg etho rest in peace :|
Yeah mans is not doing well. Etho needed a LOT of physical repairs after this incident, and that’s not even taking into account the programming/internal errors that caused it in the first place. Doc and Xisuma spend a LONG time trying to fix him before they eventually deem his programming unsalvageable and reset him.

since i cant stop thinking about things i care about and also i cant shut up ever im gonna say my bit about the "well of COURSE they destroyed everything shiekah after botw bc it nearly killed the entire country DUH do you not understand basic worldbuilding??" type of comment i had directed at me (mostly on twitter to no ones surprise and almost exactly worded like this)
--how would you even destroy it, the only thing you can actually damage with anything are guardians and nano-guardians, anything else cant even get scratched, hell you cant even climb the darn things, are you seriously trying to tell me they somehow completely pulverized not just the shrines but titans (divine beasts), the shrine of life and the pillars holding the guardians in storage around hyrule castle and the dome beneath it (whereever that went lol) when it was built to and DID last over 10 000 years ... and if you did somehow find a way to dismantle literally all of it why would you not ... use its parts for something else and also research it (lets be real here, purahs new towers are just the sheikah towers but more impractical and would by all means not need all of the material from all the missing stuff and the purahpad is just ... literally the shiekah stone but looking more like the switch and also worse bc its got almost none of the functions the shiekah stone had) they were so integrated into botws landscape removing them and their chambers would have been so much effort better spent in other places and just so unnecessary (think of the shrines at the twin mountains, removing all of that would be so dangerous and difficult to do), removing the pillars and the dome under the castle would endanger it collapsing no? there also would have needed to be a giant mechanism down there to make the pillars rise up, why would you go and try to destroy that instead of focusing on rebuilding the most important infrastrucutre
(on a sidenote, yes there are holes to the underground in the place of some shrines but its by far not all of them .. .even so there at the very least should be some rubble of them lying about at the bottom plus in most of their places its just plain earth, or sometimes even a cave locked by some puzzle which is.... so weird)
really the only explanation would be that it all just ... disappeared after zelda sealed ganon, which wouldnt only be hella unsatisfying as an answer but also again pose the problem that i would have caused the castle to collapse considering how shiekah tech was so integrated into it... unless it turned to earth somehow ... which would explain that but still be as satisfying of an explanation as 'it was all just a dream uwu' additionally, the zonau stuff under the castle wasnt even that far down so it must have intersected with the shiekah stuff, like the pillars or the dome?? but no its all just zonau ruins now wahoo
if literally all traces were gone and totk was a paralel to botw but with zonau instead of shiekah OK, they still called it a sequel tho, they still talk about the events of botw but in a way that sounds like it was just another lost legend, the tapestry exists as well, and there are a few old guardian parts on top of the hateno institute (still feels like an oversight considering how cleanly everything else was wiped off the map), plus purahs towers and the purahpad are clearly based off of it, so it cant really be some time fuckery either, some things still remain; it just doesnt add up and its frustrating as hell .. ... especially if you were like me completely thrilled and intrigued to learn more about the ancient shiekah, what WAS that dome under the castle for?? what WAS ancient energy really and why was it found in these specific places only?? did they know about ganondorf?? if they built stuff down there shouldnt they have inevitably come across the old tunnels?? the monks literally talk to link in botw why would they withhold that info, what reason could they have?
--by far my biggest annoyance with that excuse is that ... if you are so afraid of tech you dont fully understand being taken over by the bad guy again to the point you destroy not just the titans you basically worshipped as divine protectors but also immovable shrines that literally couldnt do shit to harm you even if they were pumped up to the brim with malice/miasma after they have already become non threatening/non functional anyway... HOW could you just go and fully trust and personally play around with new tech that LITERALLY rained from the sky out of nowhere, from a group of people no one knows shit about (like at least the shiekah were still existing and had a small part of recorded history) and never cared either until now that they are suddendly everywhere, even if it cant get corrupted somehow (kinda disproven by the spirit temple) how the hell would anyone know that?? if anything this would be a reason to be MORE afraid of it
even the ancient king that persecuted the shiekah bc he was afraid of their tech when they invented it didnt order them to destroy it, just bury it, despite them of all people knowing the best of how to completely destroy it??? and zelda doesnt seem like the type that would order old history and relics to be destroyed liek that??
it would have been such a golden opportunity to show that hey, the ancient shiekah based their tech on that of the zonau, they found the mines and tech and reasearched it to built their own from it, strucutres that show they were down here building the shrines from underground, titan prototypes, you cant do anything with it, its old and broken, but its there, environmental storytelling and all that
the shrine of life especially pisses me off bc thats like .. ok it was kinda not the best maybe but it still saved links goddamn life, even if it all became useless for some reason at least leave it there as a sign of respect, if there needs to be a cave have it be half collapsed after the cataclysm or something wheres the problem
(also idk if im the only one with that but in botws true ending when zelda says that vah ruta, i think, has stopped working it seemed like a good setup for more? and that she wanted to investigate that in the sense of ah shoot i want it to keep working tho and not in the sense of hell yeah lets smash it to pieces i know this is theory territory now but it seemed like it somewhat confirmed that the titans need a pilots strong spirit to work since they are not connected to the ancient energy network and the spirits of the champions passed on at the end ... the idea that ancient energy was spirit energy either gained from luminous stones or directly spirits is so neat, and i loved that idea of hey the reason why all of the energy went out all of the sudden is bc ganondorf is breaking free after having been kept in a stasis to use either his malice or his strong spirit to fuel it all has never left my mind since i first read about it bc its such a good setup for intrigue, like oh heck the ancient shiekah werent so coolio and 100% perfectly good either, maybe they knew about gans 'future' or history and hey why not trick him or sth into being sealed against his will so that problem is out the way and whoop hes pretty much an infinite source of energy nice lets use that for our research and not tell anyone oh no we created a monster (calamity gan) l guess we are gonna use the tech we fuel with his own life against him lol, OR you could have connceted it to the zonau maybe doing the sealing first and the shiekah discovering him later and being like oh neat an endlessly rich powersource we arent gonan tell anyone about weehoo
it would have tied into the ancient shiekah stuff, explained why it doesnt work well anymore, give a reason to explore the underground and discover it all, give a reason to why it was kept a secret bc no one wanted to admit yeah we made this monster ourselves whoops, give ganondorf a reason to be this angry and make it all more nuanced bc yeah ok maybe the zonau knew about gan and in their effort to prevent it caused it instead by sealing him before he became a problem and it all started a domino effect of disasters leading into all this mess that now poor zelda and link gotta solve
im not saiyng this is the better version or that i am better but again you can literally do so much with the setup for it all and what totk ended up doing with it feels so ... not even underused but straight up backwards treading you had it right on front of you INFINITE POTENTIAL AAARGH)
theres only so much fun gameplay and fantastic music can save and man can you imagine what could have been if the story got the same polish as the gameplay and music ;__;

Mask Wild 💃 for the ask game!
Oooooooh Mask!Wild loves clothes. The prettier and more elaborate the better. Weird, outlandish, dazzling - they all delight him. He's collected more clothes than he knows what to do with, and has every kind of jewellery he could buy in Gerudo, with every kind of stone set into it.
That said, he's too nervous to actually wear most of his clothes. It's not just the more revealing ones like the barbarian set or the tight ones like the rubber set. He owns several beautifully cut doublets, surcoats with the most incredible embroidery, and half a dozen intricate abayas from the gerudo that he just... doesn't wear.
They're so beautiful. He loves them so much. But he's afraid of looking silly in them. He doesn't want to be judged, and hates drawing attention to himself, so he keeps them folded away and only brings them out occasionally to look at and wish he had the courage to wear them.
-
"Hey what's that?" Sky asked, wandering across the camp.
Most of the others were away from camp, fishing or foraging or up to no good (wind and spirit), and Sky and Wild were the only ones left behind. Sky had been sleeping until a few moments ago, and it looked as if Wild had decided to sort through some of the contents of his slate.
Wild jumped at his voice and shied away, hurriedly bundling up whatever it was he had on his lap.
"Nothing." he signed, but Sky was not to be deterred. He saw how his brother's hand lingered on the embroidered fabric, gold thread against pristine green.
He smiled and sat down beside him, careful not to get too close. Much as his brother was settling into the Chain, he still had strict boundaries and Sky didn't want to push him, not now. It was a day for relaxation, after all.
"That's really pretty." he said. "I love embroidered fabrics like that. It reminds me of back home, though we don't usually wear things that nice unless we're going out somewhere special."
Wild's mask dipped for a moment before his hands came up, the signs small and uncertain.
"I've never worn it." he admitted before slowly, reverently spreading it out for Sky to see.
It was a thing of beauty. A tunic made of forest green silk and heavily embroidered with stylised horses and trees in gold thread. Sky looked at Wild first for permission before running a finger over the threadwork, in awe of the garment.
"It's beautiful!" he gasped. "Why haven't you worn it?"
Wild shrugged, retreating in on himself. "Not really my thing."
Sky frowned. "But... you own it? And you were admiring it just now?"
His brother shifted where he sat, uncomfortable. "I'd look silly in it." he said. "People would laugh. It's better i don't."
"It would be pretty hard for them to laugh," Sky said mildly, "With my fist in their face. Wild, you should totally wear it! Legend would be so jealous! And everyone would love it! And you'd love it! I know you like pretty things!"
Wild hummed, not sounding convinced, but he reached out and ran a wistful hand across the tunic.
Sky leaned in. "Go on." he breathed. "At least try it on. For me."
That did it. Wild's eyes flicked up and Sky would swear he was smiling. He nodded.
"Okay." he said and then gestured to Sky to turn around.
Obediently, the Chosen Hero returned to the fire and waited until he heard Wild's soft footsteps approach. He turned, and grinned.
He looked incredible.
The tunic fitted him perfectly, not too tight but clearly well enough tailored that it sat comfortably around his waist and then hung down to his knees. The neckline was a little lower than he normally wore, showing scarred and pitted flesh down to just below his collarbone, and the sleeves cut off halfway down his forearms, but it looked good. Sky didn't find himself looking at Wild's scars, for all that they were more visible. The tunic looked fabulous on him, and that had his whole attention. He'd even swapped out his mask, exchanging his normal blue one for a matching green edged with swirls of painted leaves.
The effect was glorious.
"Wild, you have to wear this more often." he gushed. "You look amazing. The others are going to love it."
Wild bowed his head, shifting from foot to foot. "Really?" he signed.
Sky nodded emphatically, grinning. "Really!"
Wild looked up at him, and once again Sky was certain he was grinning.
"Thank you, Sky."

actor hob, and pretentious asshole film director dream
[ this got so long and so weird and specific i'm so sorry ]
so hob is an everyman actor. a good actor, charismatic, funny, fan favorite, but not the type that gets cast in highbrow art films. mostly he does like romcoms, mid-budget action movies, feel-good family films, etc etc. and he's totally cool with that, he's good at what he does, and people enjoy those films, anyway. he might be getting a bit bored though, a bit stagnant. might be thinking it's time for some reinvention. and there might be a certain director whose ridiculous and nonsensical but dreamy films he's particularly enamored with...
dream makes REALLY pretentious art films. the types that get studied in graduate level film classes and have fifty different academic papers with fifty different theses trying to puzzle them out. dream is a master of themes and images and subtle construction. he is also a COMPLETE asshole and impossible to work with, an auteur in the most stereotypical way possible, he writes and directs, he micromanages all his projects, he asserts his vision and god help anyone who goes against it. nobody can handle him, nobody can STAND him, and the only reason he still gets funding for these projects is because they win awards, so many awards, and the studios want to ride on the coattails of those awards. but it's getting to the point where even his most ride-or-die producers are ready to give up.
right off the back of dream's most recent bafta, a rather naive Big Exec approaches him to direct the next installment of his Big Superhero Franchise. dream is immediately like fuck off with that bullshit but the exec pleads with him that the franchise is flagging and they really need something new to spice it up. plus the pay will be enough for dream to finance like 10 of his own ridiculous art films without having to rely on producers for money. and dream really is about to get cut off for being a complete insufferable asshole so he takes the gig. it kind of feels like prison though.
anyway, he gets to work trying to make this shitty boring film at least marginally less shitty and boring. he doesn't have a lot of leeway -- a lot of the story is locked in, half the cast is set from prior installments etc. dream immediately regrets taking this job, he'd rather die in actual prison than work on this mindnumbing piece of trash. it feels like it's taking an eternity and who could possibly stand an eternity of this???
well. enter hob, whose agent managed to snag him a 2nd-lead sort of role in this thing. it's not QUITE the reinvention he was going for but the pay and exposure are really good -- and even if they weren't, the moment hob saw that dream was attached he was immediately on board.
cue dream tearing his fucking hair out and basically being a complete menace and diva on set -- no that wasn't good, yes we have to do a 57th take, oh my god this dialogue is horrible give me that shitty script i'm writing my own thing, what do you mean the plot is linear???, wait there are how many cgi aliens????? i'm going to kill myself -- and Hob, pretty much Just Happy To Be There as always, takes one look at this beautiful dramatic emo asshole and is like oh. yes. i don't know what i'm saying yes to, but i'm saying yes. just immediately enamored with this bitch against all logic, he's like i've seen all your films i know how your mind works you brilliant nihilistic mess of a person. i'm on board. let's go.
first scene that hob's in dream is once again ranting about the atrocious script, which he did not write and is hardly allowed to change -- or, every change he makes is too weird and the studio keeps nixing it. everyone keeps sighing and being like oh my god can we please just shoot i wanna go home, meanwhile hob's like alright then. let's workshop it. and dream's just like. what. you aren't just gonna tell me to shut up? and hob's like no, youre right, this script is trash, but i know you're just going to write something really weird and psychedelic that they won't let you shoot. and dream's like you dare to speak to me that way??? and hob just puts his hands on his hips and is like listen, i actually know more about this sort of general audience family film thing than you do, mister arthouse, so are you going to work with me or not? and dream's just like what... is happening... because usually people who try to 'handle' him either just cave to his every demand like wimps, or just fight him on everything to 'prove' that they're in control, and hob is just kind of... not doing either of those? anyway dream doesn't know what to do with him.
so they workshop it. turns out hob actually DOES know how these sort of general audience all-follow-the-same-three-act-structure films work and how to improve things within those confines, and also he understands what like, normal people like, you know, casual feel good movies, not everything has to be a mindbender, jesus. so they bounce ideas off each other for like 3 hours until they finally get something that's okay enough that dream no longer wants to fling himself into the sun. meanwhile everyone on set is staring at them like 👀. then dream is like come back to my trailer we are rewriting the other 116 pages of this script right NOW. what else is hob supposed to do but follow.
then hob becomes the designated Dream Handler on set. dream starts using him as his barometer for what 'normal people' would like because he does not understand that at all. ("hob, will 'people' accept this?" "well considering youre spinning the camera around on a string i'm gonna go out on a limb and say no"). dream becomes kind of obsessed with him because his life is so like, normal, and he's okay with it?? he doesn't find existence to be an insufferable prison from which there is no escape?? and hob is like aw i know you're such a tortured artistic soul *pats him on the head*. plus, hob is actually a good actor, and he's able to put a lot of heart into even this mediocre big budget film, and kind of forces dream to confront the idea that there's more than one good type of story. that different stories serve different purposes and a straightforward happy story is okay, actually.
(and that the problem is the corporatization of the storytelling, not the story itself)
anyway the movie ends up being pretty good, dream still kind of hates it because he wasn't given full artistic license but he has to grudgingly admit that it has at least some merit. after the premiere hob is like (cheekily) so you gonna direct the sequel? and dream is like i did not write that to have a sequel. and hob's like it has a cliffhanger? and dream's like so???? and hob's like well theyre definitely gonna make a sequel. and dream's like i hate this planet. also no i'm not going to make the sequel. i'm going to fuck off to the woods and make a movie about teeth. do you want to star in it? and hob's like you're so fucking weird i'm obsessed with you i'm going to kiss you now.
so yeah, that.

a scenario that wont leave my brain:
mike and will are hanging out in mike's basement and while they're talking, the snow ball is brought up and they reminisce for a bit when will confesses he didn't want to dance with that girl. this surprises mike at first, but then he thinks on it and he apologizes, says he doesn't know why he pushed him so much to do it because thinking back he could tell will was hesitant about it.
will reassures him that it's okay and mike looks at him for a second before he can't stop himself from confessing that it honestly made him kind of upset watching him dance with that girl and he didn't really understand why and he knows that's kinda dumb because he encouraged will to do it. there's a subtle blush that creeps on will's face at this point, matching the flush on mike's. mike looks down, his nerves getting to him, when he says he thinks he knows why now and the gentle tone of his voice makes will swallow, his eyes are glued to mike in anticipation.
mike fiddles with his hands as he admits he wanted to dance with him instead and will can barely stop the smile forming on his lips as he says "really?" and something something mike ends up putting on some music and reaches out to will. will let's mike pull him up from the couch and they end up slow dancing in mike's basement to make up for not dancing together back then
