#thg is a very fun world to try building a character into (in what i hope is a realistic way)

if you're comfortable, i'd love to learn more about your hunger games oc, sutherland. she seems so cool! do you have anything you could share? 💖
awww thank you!!! im still kinda workshopping her character but here's what i currently have established for her :-) i wrote more than i though i would so under the cut lol
because suzanne collins named her characters with the influence of their district (i.e. glimmer from d1), i wanted to do the same for sutherland! district 10 is typically shown in the southwest of north america on panem maps, & sutherland literally means "southern land."
her faceclaim is emmy rossum! sutherland is around 5'6, and with her work in the fields of d10, she's got a slightly better build than those from other districts. she has brown hair & eyes, and is mainly dressed in a palette of oranges & browns.
at first she isn't really sure why she volunteered. she didn't know marlo or the hacketts well at all, but there was just something about seeing a family already so affected by the games having another child reaped. she was also going to be kicked out of her community home soon, because she's 17 at the start of the 68th games. during her interview with caesar, she plays up that she volunteered to win & is confident in her ability to, but really she didn't think it fair that a victor's child was reaped.
her main mentor is falabella hackett, marlo's mother. she coached sutherland to turn everything surrounding her reason for volunteering away from marlo & her family, and instead because she wanted to win the games. falabella didn't want any fallback on her family because sutherland decided to say she thought it was fucked up victor's kids get reaped.
in d10, she worked with both horses & cattle. compared to the other livestock raised there, she was happy to work with cattle since it felt "freer" working in the pastures & riding horses. bc im making her a #horse girl, if she hadn't volunteered, she would've liked to work solely with the horses raised for the capitol (tribute parade, etc.). as a victor she owns a couple herself & rides as her talent.
she knows the basics of leatherworking, but she prefers embroidery as a craft. after she won her games, her stylist always dressed her with something that had embroidery throughout it.
she had a similar mindset to gale (how different can it be killing an animal vs tribute) when entering the games. because of this, she made no attempt to make allies, even with her district partner tatum. she stuck to herself and avoided other tributes for the first few days of the game. she eventually would use bear traps scattered around the arena to take out most of the career pack.
speaking of bears!!! she almost dies to a muttation that's basically a crazy bear monster. it was down it the final three when it attacked her, but the other two tributes took each other out before she could be killed by it. the capitol initially had her keep the scars it gave her, since the citizens were so enamored by her survival. she is often gifted bear trinkets or furs, and she cannot stand it.
im not having her story have a huge influence/change on the source material, but i am retconing the d10 tribute dying in catching fire lol. i haven't decided if i want her to have been rescued during the games OR from the capitol yet though (either way she was in on the plan).
for the 75th games she volunteers again (technically making her the only person to ever volunteer twice lol) she's the youngest out of all the living tributes, doesn't have children, & knows she can help keep katniss alive during the quarter quell.
by the time cf & mj roll around, sutherland has been a victor & mentor for 7 years. she also has spent a significant amount of time in the capitol. while it appears she's paraded around by the same guy (justinian) all the time, they're both actually part of the underground group plutarch was a part of to overthrow the capitol. he also manages to get to district 13 for mj.
sutherland would absolutely vote no for a ceremonial final hunger games. ik the math wouldn't work out then with the vote at the end of mj, but idc enough to figure that out LMAO. she knows justinian's nieces/nephews & also can't imagine any child being put through that.

Recently read The Silence by Tim Lebbon and it was great, found out there was a movie and watched it and now I'm subjecting the Internet void to
My Thoughts on The Silence (2019) (6.5/10):
-(TLDR: I enjoyed it, but if I hadn't read the book it'd be much less interesting
TLDR of the move: if youve seen a quiet place, very similar creature, blind and hunts via hearing, reminiscent of like, piranhas combined with bats. parents, young son, deaf daughter and moms mom are trying to survive)
- Casting is all good except for Huw they fucked up (actor did a good job, just don't think he has the right vibe and its not /just/ because he's bald)
- Jude and Ally are great, Otis is a Rottweiler and I can't remember if that's book accurate (definitely not how I pictured him, I pictured a mutt that vaguely resembles a dark grey Irish wolfhound, but not as ridiculously large). but he's so so cute (I hid during The Scene™ so I have no clue how they handled it, but maybe next time I can just think about the dog actor having a really fun time)
- Not a fan of the change of setting, I understand that the problem had to move faster than the book, but they could've still kept the UK and Moldova, I feel like this would be more important to me if I was British tho tbh, im sure theres aspects of the characters in the book that got messed up when they turned american that i didnt notice. Probably cheaper to film in the USA tho.
- Obviously lacks all of the incredible build up and suspense of the entire first quarter of the book, with Ally seeing the cave on TV and slowly watching it become a bigger and bigger thing, which is one of my favorite things about the book
- Note from ~25 minutes in- better than a quiet place because it starts from the beginning, although I've heard the quiet place 2 provides a lot more context, maybe it's a ouija situation
- FUCKING HATE THAT THEY CHANGED 'HE WANTS ALLY FOR HER SIGN LANGUAGE AND SEES HER AS A FUCKED UP SAVIOR' INTO 'THE GIRL IS FERTILE' THATS SO FUCKING STUPID WHY WOULD THEY VALUE FERTILITY AT ALL WHEN BABIES ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO HUSH AS A PRE ESTABLISHED FACT THATS JUST GROSS PERVERSION FOR THE SAKE OF SHOCK VALUE INSTEAD OF WHAT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE FOR THE PLOT
- They also fucked up the order of events with the hushed attacking the house, which fucks up the relevance of the grandmas sacrifice, since they just grabbed Ally again right after
- They also didn't include the smile from grandma to Ally which would've been so so easy to include and imo was a good moment.
- I liked Jude stabbing the guy, can't remember if that was in the book. also didn't like that it was three kidnappers instead of one really big guy who ignored like, a knife wound and being punched repeatedly
- Overall very similar to how I feel about THG movie, although this movie is worse than THG generally, so the concept is amplified. fun to watch because I know the deeper parts, decent basic genre movie, but doesn't have nearly the substance, meaning, or craftsmanship as the book.
- Really wish the beginning had slightly more time to show the doubt the world had when the vesp infestation first started. I think like two or three weeks passed between the Moldova cave incident and the vesps crossing the British channel in the book. There also wasn't time to show all the ways people tried to fight back, the military burning cities while blasting off fireworks, releasing toxic gases, etc. But I think specifically the doubt that was surrounding the vesp infestation in its early stages is a very important part of what makes the book so effective, it shows how people will ignore the things they cant handle, the cognitive dissonance we all have about whats happening in far away countries, it could never happen to us etc
- Really wish Glenn got more screen time and character development, especially in relation to the doubt, but I understand why he didn't. He's the madge of this film (not as bad tho, they did their best with him and the time they had I think)
- Feel pretty much the same about the ending, I get they needed a satisfying conclusion since they knew the odds of a sequel were slim, and the original ending would've been to frustrating for a more general audience.
- Personally though, I would've written it closer to the original, but they make it to the house in Scotland, and there's vague hints about the refuge (and maybe a more solid conclusion on rob somehow) so its like, there's a little open endedness and if they really wanted to do a sequel they could, but its still satisfying and more follows the original storyline. Especially since they totally cut out the plot line of huw and his parents weird relationship and his weird feelings about Scotland.
- Still enjoyed it more than quiet place, though tbf I don't remember that movie very well, I was high as fuck during both movies, and I haven't seen the sequel
- Huws brother and sister, Allys best friend and the lake house woman's machete are all absent, along with the prime Minister announcements (although I guess itd be the president) which I really enjoyed since the governments response is a key component to how a society reacts to catastrophy, which I think is a solid bit of the point of the book
- Basically I want a five hour long extended version that's just a little more book accurate and has slightly better pacing and casting. Just like The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, and every other book to movie adaptation I've ever seen

Hope you’re doing well! It’s been fun to read your answers... and if you’re up for a few more (23 & 24)
Mer!!!! <3 I’m doing well, I hope you are too! I’m glad my answers were entertaining lol.
From this
23.) What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
Definitely my Hawks-centric BNHA x Hunger Games AU! I’ve had it outlined since the beginning of quarantine, and have randomly talked about it a bit on here, but it’s only recently that I’ve started doing any serious writing for it.
I think the biggest challenge so far is that I’m less interested in putting BNHA characters directly into THG universe, and more interested in trying to mesh the two worlds together. So instead of the Peacekeepers, they still have the hero system, and instead of a one-survivor HG, it functions more as a licensing exam where the students either pass (by killing all 12 villain tributes in the arena) or die. So you can theoretically have 12 survivors of either villains or heroes, depending on which side wins.
I have Hawks in a very Finnick Odair-type role, where he’s the youngest ever winner of the Games, but he spends his time in the Capitol (Commission) collecting information for his own devices. He basically spends the entire fic waffling between two bad choices, the Commission who’ve instituted this very brutal system, or the PLF (District 13) who want to overthrow the system, but will happily raze through all 12 Districts to do so, and also have no plans to build anything new on the ashes of what they destroy.
24.) Would you say your writing has changed over time?
Yes, but not hugely. I don’t think I’ve been back into writing long enough, nor have I written often enough to have had any super significant changes yet. I’d like to think I’ve gotten a little better at weaving in descriptions of setting and characters and organizing where I put internal narrations so they don’t break up the action too much, but the changes are pretty small as of now.
I do think getting people to beta my stuff has helped hugely, though, so a big thanks to the many people who’ve helped me out with my last few fic.

2021 january reads roundup
it’s a new month! and a perfect time to ✨reflect✨on the month’s reads! this january, i finished 5 books:
1. Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
2. A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge
3. Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
4. Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie (reread)
5. Battle Royale by Koushun Takami
thoughts below the cut~
Assassin’s Apprentice:
This read was definitely a surprise for me- I love buying 80s and 90s fantasy paperbacks from the used bookstore and I usually don’t expect very much from them. It’s definitely a childhood book that’s setting up a huge fantasy series, which is why some people find it slow- I would go into it expecting a lot of focus on the inner world of the main character, and not a lot of focus on action-packed plotting. For me, it ended up being surprisingly emotional, and had profound themes of grief and loss. The character building of the two main characters, Fitz and his mentor-figure Burrich, was so, so impressive, as well as the character building for Fitz’s dead father, Chivalry, who is never onscreen yet still affects every plot beat of the book. Give this book a try if you like atmospheric, introspective, character focused fantasy.
A Skinful of Shadows
I read this book because two of my friends are big fans of the author and I don’t like to be left out of things. I did enjoy it, though! The historical setting of the 1640s English Civil War is perfectly chosen and expressed, and is married so perfectly with the themes of the book that it doesn’t seem like it could take place at any other historical moment. The supernatural element of the plot is a perfect lens for discussing questions of power, control, belief, selfhood, and the afterlife. Do you believe in Puritan ideology? Do you believe in the power of the king? Or do you just believe in your own superiority? Read this if you like atmospheric, dark fantasy, ghosts, unlikeable characters, and bears.
Convenience Store Woman
This was a different choice for me as I don’t usually stray very far out of the genre fiction world, but I’m trying to broaden my horizons. I’m also currently interested in reading translated works, so this was a good start! This book was short and sweet and absolutely dead on in its portrayal of the rigidity of society and the way that other people are hostile to people that don’t fit in to their preestablished narratives about what a person should be. Read this if you’re frustrated with the assumptions people make about you and your life based on absolutely nothing.
Ancillary Justice (reread)
This was my fourth read of Ancillary Justice. It’s my favorite sci-fi trilogy and the urge to reread comes around about once a year in my mind. (It all goes around, the planet goes around the sun). This read I was fascinated by the way the book presents choice. We all believe that we would make the right choice in any given situation, and we judge others freely based on our assumption that we would have done better in their place. But it’s not that simple, and it’s not that simple to know in the moment when your choice will make a difference, and when it won’t. The main character Breq is tormented by her past- she initially believes that as an A.I. there were turning points in which she had no choice in her actions, but she begins to realize she may have been more complicit than she originally believed. She resolves to make things right- but is it possible to know when her actions will make a difference? Which gambles will lead her closer to her goal, and which ones could end her journey, and her life? Read this book (and reread it, and reread it) if you love character-focused sci fi with complex worldbuilding, stories about spaceships with feelings, and portrayals of evil empires from within the evil empire.
Battle Royale
Continued my trend of translated fiction with this one! I watched the movie a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot, and since then have been courting this book every time I see it in the bookstore. Overall I’d say I had a lot of fun reading it, as a gory, fast-paced thriller. I did get a little tired of it by the end, and there was a lot of description of guns, baseball, and other sort of boring stuff that I hardcore skimmed. My biggest gripe with the book was the overall infantilizing treatment of female characters by the narration- how dare this game force a sweet, innocent girl to kill? How dare this game ruin a beautiful girl’s beautiful face! Mitsuko Souma’s backstory was also both out of left field in how over-the-top horrific it was and completely unnecessary. Of course, people who were abused become murderous sociopaths. Of course, a female character can’t just have one bad thing happen to her, it has to be violence on top of violence for the entirety of her miserable life until she dies.
Re: The Hunger Games, after reading this book I don’t think THG was actually copping Battle Royale at all. THG is a dystopia that’s focused on the dystopia- the corruption of the rich, the element of the media in both keeping people happy and twisting their worldview, the ways in which people fall through the cracks. Battle Royale is focused more on the inner world of the characters- it wants to know what could actually drive a child to kill someone. What level of fear, what level of danger, when does someone actually snap? The author said he was inspired by Stephen King’s The Long Walk, which tracks- The Long Walk is about the limit of a human mind and body in a similar way. In what conditions could someone decide to push their body past the limit of horror? Read Battle Royale if you have a stomach for gore and like fast paced thrillers, video game plots, and seeing innocent children get mown down by a sociopath with a machine gun.
And that’s all! See you next month? And try not get kidnapped and put on an island where you are forced to kill your classmates.

Everlark Author Tag
@creamytinydays thank you for tagging me! We were hit pretty hard with sickness so this was delayed. If anyone is interested in what I have to say...
1.     What inspired you to start writing Everlark fanfiction?
I used to make up my own fictional stories in jr. high, the romantic interest just happened to sound a little like a Peeta Mellark type character (and this was the early 2000's). I took a few creative writing electives in high school and my love for writing and poetry grew.
Like a lot of us, I started reading fanfiction wanting MORE after the epilogue. I actually read one particular Everlark fic, the author prefaced that she was writing for fun, what she wanted to read. It wasn't particularly talented writing, it didn't have a high number of kudos but it was a great story that was fun to read, and I still think about it. That's what gave me the confidence to post something I dreamed up and wrote. It was an outlet, a therapy for me.
2.     How did you choose your handle name (tumblr, ao3, ff)?
Savvy - Implies that I know what I'm doing. 😉 It could be sarcastic, but it's also my nickname.
Lark - Something done for fun, especially something mischievous or daring; an amusing adventure or escapade. It's a songbird and gives the imagery of flying free. Also the ending of Mellark so that was a nod to Peeta.
3.     Any other THG pairings you ship?
Odesta is solid in my mind, that steady couple. I guess I tend to put Gale with Madge, or Bristol, maybe that's my lack of creativity. I also like Madge with Johanna or Delly. Hayffie, sure.
4.      Favorite character to write?
Katniss and Peeta, and for them to be themselves the dynamic has to be similar, in my mind. Katniss has to have a little sister she protects. Katniss needs that male best friend, these things make her who she is. Peeta needs older brothers, and a responsibility to put on a happy face because of his family. A mask of friendliness to hide the darkness he struggles with inside. Can you tell I really like these characters?
5.     Weird habits while writing?
I rush, trying to get the idea out in a haphazard frantic way in the roughest first stage, like I'm just possessed by a muse. I write an idea, a visual, a scene, then a few building block scenes.
I'm also very visual, so I need to search pictures and images, landscapes, settings, posture, outfits. Pinterest is my friend. Coffee is also my friend. For whatever reason I'm more inspired at night.
6.     Any advice for other Everlark writers?
Don't compare yourself to writers who have been doing it so much longer than you have. Don't write for the kudos, likes or comments. Write what you want to read and put out into the world. And DON'T be afraid to post your work. People will gobble it up, new ideas breath life into other authors a well, you do a lot of good by creating, for others and for your own soul.
Message me if you want a nudge. 😉
7. Favorite thing about our fandom?
The overall message that we need "the dandelion in the spring" seems to be deeply ingrained in the fandom. It seems many have been dealt a poor hand, the odds weren't in our favor and life was very hard at one point or another, yet that message of hope, that resilience seems to be in every person in the fandom, some of the most talented writers have amazing stories themselves. THAT is inspiring and beautiful!!

Unforgettable Fics
Tumblr media
Last year I posted my first Unforgettable Fics List (you can find it HERE). In that list, I included the stories that had left their mark on me as a fangirl, writer, and reader.
Those were the stories that pulled me into fan fiction, the first ones I read, the ones I think back on when I remember my earlier days in the fandom.
The fics in this year’s list are the ones that keep me here; the ones that inspire me, that prove that this fandom is still kicking, alive and well.
Some of the fics you'll find here are very new, others are well-known classics I read (or re-read) this year.
Go ahead, take a look, you might find a new favorite among them.
Happy reading!
All the World Drops Dead by @andthisisthewonder
Peeta’s voice has been inside her head since she turned 14. She doesn’t know why they share a connection, and she doesn’t care. She likes having him with her. They comfort each other. Protect each other. Until he goes where she cannot follow. Until he enters the arena. (Based loosely on the film “In Your Eyes.”)
Peeta is reaped. Katniss stays behind in Twelve and follows his struggles on TV. Sounds a little bit like One Victor, doesn’t it? Well, that part of the premise might be similar, but the rest of the story is completely different. In this fantastic fic, Katniss and Peeta share an extraordinary gift that keeps them connected. Even though they’re miles apart, Katniss guides and comforts him. Spending her days glued to the TV screen, she stops him from eating poisonous berries and keeps him updated on his enemies' whereabouts. I’m really intrigued to see how this story is going to end.
Cadavres Exquis by @andthisisthewonder, @mtk4fun, @finnicko-loves-anniec, @xerxia31, @nancymay, @titaniasfics, @peetabreadgirl, @hutchhitched, @sandyeyes, @burkygirl, @geekymoviemom, @i-roaring-girl, @mega-aulover and @javistg
After six years of radio silence came the call Katniss Everdeen had been dreading for years. Her mother, the last living member of her family, was dead.
Though it had been six years since Katniss had fled her hometown of Panem, she knew she had no choice but to come back and take care of her mother’s possessions, sell her house, get rid of the last vestiges of the life she once knew.
Organised by @loveinpanem. The principle behind this challenge was very simple. Each author was given a very tiny amount of world-building, (that summary you see above) and the last two sentences the previous writer created. From there, the sky was the limit. The resulting story was charming and funny, with unexpected twists and multiple visits to the bank while Everlark tried to solve a riddle they didn’t understand.
An awesome example of what it means to be a member of a creative community. I loved being a part of this!
Camp Mockingjay by @peetabreadgirl, @katnissdoesnotfollowback, @hutchhitched, @javistg, @appleblossomgirl0305, @titaniasfics, @xerxia31 and @burkygirl
When Katniss agrees to spend the summer working with Gale at a summer camp, every choice brings her closer to an opportunity she thought she'd missed forever.
Another collaborative fic. This one was organized by @everlark-your-own-adventure. Following the principle behind the Choose Your Own Adventure books we read as children, readers were asked to choose between two options at the end of each chapter. Writers had to follow the story and adapt to the readers’ demands.
The resulting fic is as sweet as a summer adventure. Each chapter closely follows the storyline while showcasing its author’s personality and writing style. The last installment --an epilogue written by @burkygirl and @xerxia31-- is one of my personal favorites.
Cinders by @ghtlovesthg
Canon-Divergent AU. As rebellion starts sweeping through Panem like wildfire, Katniss quickly learns it will take all she has to keep her loved ones from getting scorched. Submission to PIP. Everlark. WIP
Katniss and Peeta find common ground when Gale and Delly are reaped. Defiant, stubborn, and too consumed by anger to think about the consequences, Gale challenges the Capitol.  In a shocking twist of events, his family pays the price. An intriguing fic, full of twists and turns that still has me at the edge of my seat.
Destiny by @xerxia31
“This would have happened anyway." Canon-divergent Everlark.
In the cave scene in THG Peeta implies that being reaped was the best thing that ever happened to him. Well, in the case of this fic, it is. The dread I felt while reading the introduction, quickly turned to excitement when I found the surprise @xerxia31 had in store for us. A must read.
Dominion by @muttpeeta
Killing me would be a waste when you could leverage something much more useful out of me.“ Captain Peeta Mellark strikes a deal with his captor, the Empress Katniss Everdeen.
This intriguing one-shot shows Peeta as Katniss’s prisoner. I love the way their relationship evolves here, how they gradually learn to trust and care for each other despite their circumstances.
Elaborate Lives by @booksrockmyface
Katniss had a normal life, two kids, a husband, and a great job. But it all turned upside down when she shook hands with Peeta and got the literal shock of her life. So how can they handle this delicate situation without destroying their lives in the process?
I’m a sucker for soulmate fics, and this is one of my favorites. Katniss and Peeta meet through their children, who are best friends. She’s married. He’s a widower. They want to be together, but they don’t want to hurt those they care about.
A lovely fic about friendship, love, and the inevitable pull of being with the one person who’s right for you.
Everything But Money by @mtk4fun
Katniss Everdeen learns how the other half lives, and finds love in this Everlark historical set in 1936 during The Great Depression.
@mtk4fun takes us through the toils and struggles of the Great Depression. In her fic, Katniss and Peeta face poverty, hunger, unemployment, and jealousy as they fight to find stability in a world that’s collapsing around them. Haymitch’s role as Katniss’s uncle is definitely worth reading!
First Love by @sothereff
Primrose Everdeen makes a friend in new neighbor Peeta Mellark and looks forward to spending her summer days with him at the creek. But when he finally meets her sister, Katniss, Prim finds she has some competition for Peeta’s time… and affections. Loosely based on the film The Man in the Moon.
I love this version of Prim! She’s sweet and innocent at times, but she’s also as angry and hateful as only a teenage girl can be. And, while we don’t want to see her suffer, we all know this is a battle she just can’t win.
Five kisses that should have been, and one that was by @muttpeeta
Katniss and Peeta keep meeting on New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, it’s just never the right time.
Everything seems to conspire against Everlark in this fantastic one-shot. They date the wrong people, they wait, they drink, they cry. Somehow, they push through. A wonderful read with a very satisfying ending.
If I Have You by @everlarkeologist
Everlark, months after their divorce. Written for the F4LLS charity drive.
Katniss wants Peeta to be happy. Why is he in so much pain then? A beautiful story of sacrifice and love that shows us how the pressures we put on ourselves can drive us to hurt those we love.
Kindergarten by @heyyouao
Katniss and Peeta meet in kindergarten and develop a relationship that will last a life time. Modern day AU. Rated for teens initially, although the rating will change as the story develops. This work contains depictions of child abuse which may be difficult for some to read.
This incredibly cute story follows Katniss and Peeta as they grow up as best friends. I especially like Peeta’s connection with the rest of the Everdeen clan --who immediately adopts him as one of their own.
Love Letters by maddmaddworld
You are my best friend in the whole world, and I promise you that you will never feel this much pain ever again. You are my heart, and I intend to keep it safe.
Love, Katniss
Sometimes it’s easier to write what we feel than to say it out loud. I love Katniss’s  reaction to Peeta’s letters in this fic, and what he says is as beautiful as what he writes.
The Murder Game by @deinde-prandium
College AU fluff.
This fic is a lot of fun. Katniss and Peeta survive a Murder Game by hiding in his room. With great parallels to canon and the cave scenes, this story seamlessly blends the world of Panem with a modern day AU.
Museum Marriage Proposal by @badnovels
This is such a Peeta thing to do.
A sweet drabble that makes me smile every time I read it.
The Percentage of Us by @badnovels
Katniss finally believes Peeta when he says he wants her to stay.
How can something so wrong feel so right? A fic that leaves you reeling; dazed as you try to remind yourself that this particular version of Everlark shouldn’t be together, and still.. how can they be apart?
The Playdate by @awhiskeyriver
When Peeta’s son is having trouble in school, he thinks the last thing they need is to plan a get together with the source of the problem.
Daddy!Peeta faces off against Mommy!Katniss in front of Principal Abernathy as they each try to protect their respective children. Just that scene is well worth a read! But, of course, there’s more. There’s friendship, and love, and loss; the frustration of divorce, and the loneliness that comes with being a single parent. And then, there’s also some smut.
Procreate by Loudmouth Lamb
In a version of Panem where young men and women are bred in an annual ceremony to produce the next generation of manual laborers, Gale and Madge try to make the best out of the worst. AU (no Hunger Games). Mild Everlark.
I haven’t read a lot of Gadge fics, but this one is one of my favourites. Inspired by A Handmaid’s Tale, Madge and Gale are chosen to provide a child for Panem.  I love the balance between the two characters’ voices. Madge’s quiet dignity and strength shine though this story as she stares an angry Gale down.
Ruse by @purple-cube
“I should have volunteered to take your place in the first Games,” Gale tells him. “Protected her then.”
“You couldn’t,” says Peeta. “She’d never have forgiven you.”
Friendship and loyalty are tested in this beautiful canon-divergent fic in which Gale and Katniss are crowned as co-victors of the 74th Hunger Games. Forced into marriage, the best friends help each other find love and happiness.
Silver Thaw by @eala-musings
Set during the Dark Days rebellion. A Capitol hunting guide and Panem Games Biathlon champion is enlisted to hunt down and capture a mysterious rebel troublemaker in the snowy mountains of District 13.
Once again, Peeta finds himself acting as a pawn for the Capitol. As the story unfolds, he realises things are not what they seem. Gradually, Katniss’s strength and resolve draw him in, and they become allies and much more. With perfect pacing, beautiful descriptions, and believable interactions between the characters it’s no wonder I consider this an unforgettable fic.

i've been in a hunger games mood lately for some reason and your writing + art is inspiring me to try to write some thg fic as well! i'm not sure where to go about in terms of characterization, though - the books only give us an actual good glimpse into katniss, peeta, and gale; so i'm curious as to how you come up with proper characterizations for finnick, annie, johanna, etc. (+ other tributes like gloss who we don't get to see often?)
Oh gosh, I haven’t thought about THG in a while (except for THG AUs, oops) but hopefully I can help you out!
First you gotta remember that THG is very aggressively filtered through Katniss’s POV (and Katniss is, honestly, not that much of an insightful narrator) so even the people she interacts with a lot may not even be the people she thinks they are.
Besides factoring in the setting and current circumstances, I think proper characterization really just comes down to treating them like their own person, which I guess sounds deceptively simple. You gotta remember that these characters existed before their places in the story, and that stuff will factor into their personalities and perceptions. For example, you won’t believe how often I see writers refuse to give these characters actual friends or family outside of canon. I don’t know where this weird stigma towards original characters came from, but it’s pretty much a requirement if you wanna flesh out a believable character.
I also highly encourage you to give something to a character that’s all their own. This is a mistake I most often see with Annie, but I see it a fair amount with the other tributes as well (Glimmer, Gloss, etc). A lot of writers, for example, only use Annie in order to relate back to Finnick, which I personally think is a poor, poor choice. Annie can have a lot going for her that should be all her own.
But I guess the most important advice I can give for characterization is that you should be able to answer one question: What does this character want? This can be both long-term and short-term. For short-term (usually for scenes or one-shots), you might answer with something like: He wants her to listen to him. She wants to regain control of the situation. For long-term, this should be a strong, compelling driving force for this character. He wants to avenge his family. She wants to become the most famous person in the world. Essentially, everybody wants something at any given time. Once you nail this down, it should be pretty smooth sailing from there, because every action a character does should be towards furthering this goal.
Now, lucky (?) for me, I do tend to lean towards loving the minor or underappreciated characters (call me a hipster if you want), which means I can have a lot of fun with fleshing them out. And I guess when it comes down to it, practice makes perfect. So practice as much as you can! Even if it’s an OC at first. I’ve been making OCs for… forever, honestly, and it’s a different sort of challenge when you’re building a character from the ground up.
I hope that helps, anon, and good luck with the fic writing!!! I’m rooting for you!!!

There’s something bothering me.
I understand why people are disappointed by the fact Bellamy’s journey is yet again psychological. What I can’t see is how that’s any less important than Clarke’s.
I’ve been reading a considerable amount of “Clarke’s again saving the world and Bellamy’s again on backstage” and other variations. Idk I feel like there’s a point missing because imo this show is no longer a THG arena where you must kill everyone till you’re the survivor. In fact, that’s exact the opposite story they’re trying to tell. They have been constantly addressing that every life matters on survival mode and more recently how you live is important too. Not just important, essential. Several characters besides B and C called and were called on this, including, but not restraining to, Abby, Lexa, Octavia, Luna and Jasper.
Point made, this is why Bellamy’s arc is again needed. “First we survive, then we find our humanity again”? Bellamy’s taking none of this shit again. He’s already been there, reached the rock bottom, done horrible things under the excuse “who we are and who we need to be to survive are very two different things” or any other and nope. Not anymore. “We save who we can save today” is: “I will save every reachable human being because all lives are valuable”. Nice, right? Except for the little fact that despite how hard we wants or needs, he can’t force salvation on one. It’s up to them to choose.
That’s quite a road for Bellamy himself as a character for many reasons (a lot of people probably already talked about this but whatever). He never actually chose to protect Octavia with his own life. She happened in his life and I’m not for one second doubting he also did it for love. However, when you have a younger sibling you feel they’re your responsibility and they have to be under your wing forever - it’s hard to separate things. Also, he didn’t choose to protect The 100. He wanted to lead them for his own good but things were kinda happening and he was too involved to get out - and he tried.
I’d like to highlight too how important his journey is to all of the Delinquents. It’s no news The 100 look up to, admire and listen to Bellamy. If he, of all people, can understand the combo surviving + living, their life quality would improve idk 100%, folks. There must be a balance between the things they’re doing for survival and having fun and enjoying the moments. This is a trait that’s been defining for him as a leader: the connection he has on the personal levels. These young people likely can’t relate with Jaha’s, Kane’s or even Clarke’s leadership because they’re way too far from them. This is a horizontal lesson to be learnt by each one of them. Let’s live, deserve to survive and survive. All of it.
Also, I can’t possibly see what Bellamy could add on the science lab. I don’t know if I have a limited vision or sth, feel free to message me if you're up with any contributions he’d make. Yes, I want him to be with Clarke 24/7 and all the ship goggles but. That’s not the story. It makes sense, it’s fitting that he stays with the Delinquents and with Octavia (the latter only in thoughts) because that’s intrinsically who he is, as a person and as a leader.
Basically what I’m trying to say is: Clarke makes sure they survive, Bellamy makes sure they live. Again they’re balancing each other, two sides of the same coin. She helps to build the physical walls, he helps to ensure the mental ones.
