band name: how did they and the others come up with the band name? has the name changed since it was founded? 

so tara’s band is called twiceshy – derived from the old saying ‘once bitten, twice shy’. it was originally an edgy joke between her and seven when they were freshmans, reference a traumatic experience tara had as a child wherein she was uh. mauled by a pitbull lol 💀 i like to think the name was actually the final puzzle piece in terms of her healing emotionally from that experience – she'd been through a lot of therapy over the years as a result obviously, and ended up coming out the other side with an ironic fondness for pitbulls and all misunderstood breeds in general. they even made their band icon a pitbull !  

since then she leans HEAVY into dog motifs in her writing because she vibes w the themes. her own defensiveness, her intense attachment to loved ones, her stubbornness, the tendency people have to not respect her as an aggressive animal when pushed . . . she relates ! and also being a woman in a male dominated metal scene.... shes been called a bitch a lot. so why not go all out with it lol 

beginnings: when and how did they know they wanted to be a professional musician? was there a deciding factor? 

seven was the deciding factor :( before she met him tara was aimless. she was a shy angry kid with no friends and no hobbies outside of writing embarrassing poetry in her textbooks during class and daydreaming. tara was the one who got sev into rock, but SEVEN was the one who introduced her to music and singing in general as an outlet. i don't think she even realized how talented a singer she was until he told her, bc she was so shy prior to meeting him. since then she's always pushed herself to be exceptional in her vocals and her writing bc she does feel like this is the closest thing she has to purpose. but then, even if she hated it (and she does honestly hate the idea of fame) she wouldve done it all anyway just to be close to seven forever.

bandmates: how do they feel about the members of the band? would they still be interested in stardom if they weren’t with that group?

hmmmm..... it's complicated atm? i think things are okay right now with the band, but tense ! they've been tense since The Vote, which tara vehemently objected to and still resents. i really sincerely hope there's a chance for mc to confront their bandmates over the decision, bc . . . yeah. she loves them all, but a part of her blames them for destroying her relationship and future with seven. since his exit she's coped by immersing herself the work and hyperfocusing solely on mastering the craft and pushing herself to her limits, bc she struggles to relate to them socially at the time being. but also.... unless she left the band to be with seven, there's no way she would leave them for greener pastures. she's more about "sharing art" than fame, and her anxiety couldn't handle being untethered from everyone she loves like that.

lyrics: what are some songs you associate with your character? any specific lyrics that really scream your character?

saint bernard by lincoln for that sick dog motif ofc. tara's got so many similar lyrics like that and the majority are about seven. lol.

alternatively happy song by bring me the horizon reminds me of her relationship with music/performing in general. she has such intense social anxiety offstage, but the nature of her genre (heavy metal lol) helps her circumnavigate that fear and absolutely RAGE on stage. it's a great outlet and the one part of being a public facing figure that she enjoys.

Saw someone talking about RWBY and went to check and... Nope. Season 10 is still not even greenlit yet. Honestly the series could not be more disappointing with how it gets handled.

RANT.

At the end of volume 5, it was implied that Raven went home to meet with Taiyang. In 4 seasons there hasn't been a single solitary frame of screentime dedicated to resolving that cliff hanger. They've barely been mentioned in passing. 2 perfectly capable professional fighters that would have been perfect for several fights and conflicts... Just gone. One of them is even capable of making portals to one of the main characters. Raven could have literally gotten them out of the wonderland dimension in seconds. The second those two saw what was happening with that WORLD WIDE BROADCAST their characters, as they stood as people, would have been FROTHING AT THE MOUTH to run over and do something-- Taiyang because he loves his kids, and Raven because she would realize Cinder had lived and would want to put that bitch back down. (Also because she loves Yang but she'd be pretending she didn't.)

The characterization of SEVERAL characters doesn't just leave much to be desired, it's garbage hastily thrown together to further plot points that seemingly will no longer go anywhere, because the team decided to kill them off. Characters who have made complete 180s as people in the worst ways, to the point where their story arcs basically got erased because the story needed to be Edgier.

The points presented to us at the start of the story that got many of us hooked have been completely abandoned, if not laughed off as a joke. Remember all the other teams being setup and not just given spotlights, but several dedicated songs and signs of plot relevance? Remember Haven's teachers that were in the loop with Oz that were also friends with Ruby and Yang's dad and obviously knew that the kids were getting into some shit? Remember the Faunus who had decided to take a stand and help the humans fight back against the grim? The writers don't.

The actors are becoming more of a joke with each passing season, using their positions as Twitter clout to win arguments while phoning in half their performances. Hell, in the RWBY remake, Ruby's actress is quoted as saying that she's decided to play her character as more cynical. Not because RUBY is more cynical-- no, she's still bright eyed and bushy tailed. No the actress has just decided that since Ruby grows to be more cynical after SEVERAL VOLUMES OF TRAGEDY OCCUR, it would somehow be better if she was like that from the beginning.

Also back to that point about the weird Wonderland story... What point did it serve? The season was several episodes shorter than any other and was completely contained without a single cutaway to what the entire rest of the world was dealing with, which considering the size of the plot, is WEIRD and STUPID. It's INSANE how little of a shit the writers gave about their own work, actually. Almost as if it was on purpose. The dire situation the team left was barely talked about. There wasn't a single piece of information given to the audience about the fate of the group of refugees who they saved. This was basically a DBZ filler arc, that did nothing but show that Juan looks attractive as he gets older, and... I guess make Ruby feel more confident? When a simple conversation between her and her team would have done the same thing, because her only real issue was that she thought she was doing a bad job? And show that the Gods of their universe had a previous residence?

Volume 9? This. Was. Anime. Filler. Because no one on the writing side of production can figure out what the hell kind of conclusion the show is trying to reach. They've lost the thread completely. They branched so far away from the original story that absolutely none of Monty's notes probably make sense anymore, and we all keep getting told "it's coming! We're working on it! You'll learn all the answers next volume!" When 10 hasn't even been Okay'd TO BE WORKED ON. They're floundering and stringing everyone along, all the while making a SECOND crossover movie with the Justice League-- yep, the RWBY characters with the Justice League. Why? Who knows! BUT THERE'S A SECOND ONE NOW! It's blatantly clear that to RWBY's team, the show isn't even their priority with the IP anymore. This show is completely dead unless a complete overhaul occurs within the writing and directing teams. And I mean that genuinely. I'm just gonna say it: the reason 9 was so short and didn't do a VERY needed cutaway, was because no one on that crew knew whether they wanted the refugees to live or die. They needed more time to decide how much more edgy they could get, so they fabricated a season of complete nonsense so that they could desperately try to patch up their own mistakes. Volume 10 isn't being greenlit because even the CEOs in charge know that their pitches are embarrassing. They needed time to pull themselves together.

And then they wasted it on the second Justice League crossover instead. Because, you know, THAT'S what RWBY fans have been begging for.

all she wants is to sink her teeth into some real investigative journalism and get her career back on track. she hears about this "runaway bride" who's left three men at the altar already, and would ya look at that, it's someone who lives in her podunk home town, someone she went to school with even.

she's got a pitch, she's got an in, and her editor is more than happy to get nancy out of his remaining hair for a while.

nancy has vague memories of chrissy cunningham, star cheerleader, queen of hawkins high herself. a real sweetheart who always had a huge crowd of friends. someone who had it all figured out, who had her whole life decided at 18. a straight line to a white picket fence and 2.5 kids. all she had to do was say "i do".

chrissy is already engaged to bachelor #4 before nancy comes to town. first there was jason, then derek, travis, and now steve. she's the laughing stock of her friends and family, but this one is going to stick, she's sure of it. they've been planning this wedding for months, and her fiance is well aware of her history. he's convinced that she just needs to visualize a positive outcome and keep her eye on the ball (him) when she's walking down the aisle. swing, and follow through.

and she loved each of these men, she loves men. but she can’t help but think there’s something missing in her life. she’s so sure about each and every one of them, right up until the very last minute. every time she walks down the aisle, all she can see is a door that’s closing forever, and she never got to even look through it.

when chrissy meets nancy wheeler again, almost a decade out of high school, and sees someone so confident, who's achieved all their dreams, and is living the life they always wanted, it terrifies her as much as it annoys and intrigues her.

nancy, who escaped their dead end town, who does what she wants when she wants, and doesn't let anyone tell her she can't. nancy, who's so comfortable with herself... and who she loves.

but as nancy gets to know chrissy better, she realizes she's not the ditzy heartbreaker nancy and everyone else thought she was. she sees someone... good and caring, and with so much love to give. how does it always go so wrong right at the finish line?

nancy sees someone who actually doesn't have it all figured out. who in fact never wanted the plan that was set out before her. someone who's just as desperate to escape it as nancy was herself. if only she'd realize she's been holding the key to her own freedom all along.

and chrissy comes to realize that nancy doesn't have it all figured out either. she's determined and driven, and her blind pursuit of the truth at all costs has lost her more than it's won. friends, relationships, even her career.

as they get to know each other better, they realize just what a mess they are... and start to fall in love with all those messy pieces.

it's the night before the wedding when it all comes to a head, when nancy challenges chrissy about all the questions she didn't let herself think about, and chrissy argues with nancy about all the ways she's making her life harder for herself. wouldn't it all be easier just to go along with the plan? to not have to think about it? it can't be that bad, can it?

the argument ends with a fiery kiss, and nancy walking out the door, leaving a stunned chrissy in her wake.

it's their wedding day, and chrissy is more determined than ever to make this one stick. she's going to do it, she's going to go through with it. steve loves her and she loves him.

but she runs. of course she runs. what else can she do when she has nancy's words ringing in her ears and her kiss lingering on her lips?

they don't get married right away. hell they don't get together right away. chrissy's never even lived on her own before. so they take it glacially slow while chrissy takes classes at the city college and moves out of her parent's house and into a small apartment just down the street from nancy's, temping at every different kind of job she can find until she figures out exactly what she wants to do.

and along the way, she figures out who she is too, the kind of person she wants to be when she's not trying to fit herself into the mold of who someone else wants her to be.

eventually, chrissy proposes to nancy. and when they do get married, neither one of them walks down the aisle. they walk towards each other and meet at the altar.

so griffin (born gruffudd) was born to two mages, though they did not meet either for a very long time and they show no signs of having magic. it's revealed later that their father is taliesin (who i revamped in my universe to make more sense and be better for the show so he's a lot younger). their parents left them as a baby with gaius, promising to be back for them later - but their parents never returned.

growing up, griffin was always kind of a weird child, but good and kind and playful and so loving. they always had a love of music and was gifted a lute by gaius at a fairly young age. they never really understood why they were so drawn to music their whole life, but it was undeniable. they're honestly about as close as you can get to being a bard without actually being one lmao. also fun fact they befriend all the stray cats that wonder around camelot!!

so at the start of season 1 when merlin comes to live with them griffin is.. honestly a bit standoffish. gaius is confused bc they're usually a lot nicer and a little jokester and he's like wth is going on. but it becomes clear they've got issues with abandonment bc of their parents and they're afraid that with merlin around gaius won't want them there anymore - which he works tireless to prove is not the case!!!! griffin does warm up to merlin (who tries very hard to be friendly with them) and they get rly close. he's like a big brother to them pretty much. they're a little appalled when he starts working for arthur bc "that guy was always a JERK to me, you should smother him in his sleep!" as gaius quickly reminds them SH, the king will NOT take that lightly, even from someone your age (uther does not like griffin bc they have red hair and make potions out of grass and mud and have been smarter than him since they were like 7)

shit goes crazy when mordred comes to camelot for the first time!!!! griffin insists on helping keep him safe and brings him gifts like frogs and sticks and demands to sit with him on morgana's bed, wooden training sword in hand, to protect him. also griffin has such a like.. little kid crush on morgana tbh like she's too old for them but they're baby and they can dream

as they grow up they grow closer with their family (which now includes the knights) and even with arthur, who is slowly changing over time and no longer a huge dick to them all the time and even promises to make them a knight one day, something that their younger and uneducated self had dreamt of for years. they're knighted as of the ending of season 3 when they're old enough and are proud to serve him !! they would've rather died than server uther. bitch

so at the beginning of season 5 it gets even WILDER bc mordred is reunited with this sleepy lil goofball when they're adults and he's like oh. oh i'm in love with them. and the feeling is MUTUAL and merlin fucking hates it. he is not happy about it one bit but he just has to deal. this is the first time in a long time there's genuine tension between him and griffin bc he confides in them about most things and they can't stand the way he treats mordred.

some time in season 5 griffin's powers finally come into play. they work in a very particular way but the gist that they figure out is that their abilities stem from giving hope and inspiration and breathing light and life into the world, generally in the form of song because they're literally a dnd bard what can i say and while afraid for them, mordred and their family are so proud

in my universe, which is the right and better and not poorly written rushed ending one, mordred still joins morgana because griffin gets seriously hurt and he uses magic to save them. he knows it will bring consequences but he'd rather that than lose his source of light. by camlann, griffin is heartbroken beyond belief - this call back to their fear of abandonment after all - and does not want to fight. they do come face to face with him on the battlefield but all they can do is find a place to hide together before griffin reveals that they were wounded, and passes out. the sight of him carrying their unconscious body is what makes arthur and morgana both pause their confrontation and think - this is two people they care deeply about, forced to be enemies, still finding a way to be lovers, just wanting to be safe and sound together. while things are still incredibly tense, they get griffin to safety to be healed and decide that maybe it's worth talking things out.

There's something about the sheer impossibility to Mighty that I love, the defiance they both have decided to stand by to stay together when, realistically, they were made for very different lives than the ones they've chosen by being together. And with Ren that's obvious because Ren is so deeply defensive of their relationship with Martin but people underestimate just how strong Martin is in all of this. It's harder for him, he's never had the freedom to the degree Ren has; so every point when Martin gets just a little closer to happiness on his own terms amazes Ren.

This song, yes, is a bit more mellow, which is definitely a Martin feel for me, but a lot of Ren too in the insistence that whatever other people think just doesn't matter.

Again the battle was finding one not already on the Tian playlist. But! My boys! My dear, messy boys! They've been through a lot, still have a lot to go through and this entire song just hits that note with me over just how much they've tackled some of their own demons trying to be there for each other. Tony is a fighter, the boy lives by his resolve and has more bravado than brains sometimes and you have to love him for it. But one of my favorite things about Tian is how there's that balance; they argue, they're stubborn, they have rough points but genuinely when it comes down to it they've both been fighting the whole time for each other against the curse, their own mistakes, and the bond between them.

Tony will jump into a fight with little hesitation but when it comes to Tony being backed into a corner or losing his resolve that things will change for the better Ian won't back down either; they're still pretty clumsy in life but they've figured out what's worth fighting for.

Granted, this is more of a relationship song but honestly it has that whole vibe that is always such an underlying pain with Tony and how time takes people away from him. He just survives and survives through it all and loses parts of himself every time, then just keeps trying to be a part of the world and build those bonds through it all. His resilience is amazing but it hurts me, endlessly, every year and every story of people who moved on without him. To a point we all experience that as we change, lose contact and our lives take different roads, so it's very relatable to me and one of the things about Tony that shows just how haunted he really is under the front he's learned to guard himself with.

The thing I like most about Zuko is that he's stubborn and rebuffs any sort of affection shown towards him. Zuko is not the kind of person who just latches on to the first person that shows him a bit of kindness because of his past. Quite the opposite actually.

My main examples are these people (Aang, Katara, Jet, and Song) who have all shown Zuko affection or have extended an olive branch to him in friendship.

The first season, in the episode where Zuko dresses up as the Blue Spirit and gets Aang out, Aang asked him if they could have been friends. Mind you, this is right after he rescued Aang and got knocked out. He wakes up to this kid who's asking him hopefully if they could have been friends clearly trying to connect with him.

How does Zuko respond to this? Zuko throws flames at him to scare him away.

In the second season, Jet offers Zuko (who he knows as Lee) a place in his gang. They've just worked together in casing the captain's food and giving back to the refugees. Jet sees Zuko's potential and connects with him on a personal level. He wants him to join his crew and be one of the Freedom Fighters and have friends to call his own.

And what does Zuko do at this offer of friendship? He rejects him just like he did Aang.

Later on in the same season, Zuko and Katara get stuck in the same cave and connect on an emotional level about their shared trauma from the Fire Nation. They share their loss and from there Katara sees Zuko as more than just an evil prince who wants to stop the Avatar from bringing peace to the world. She offers him her spirit water to heal his scar!!! That's a huge deal!

What does Zuko do right after this? Right after his heart-to-heart with Katara? Yes, you got that right. He turned against her and joined Azula! Because Zuko isn't the kind of guy who just latches on to the first, second, third, or fourth person who shows him affection.

And even early on in season 2 we see that this is a common thing for him not just a fluke with the avatar in season 1. We see it with Song, someone who cared for, housed, and showed that Zuko was not alone by showing her own scars. Zuko responds as he usually does by closing up again and stealing her family's ostrich horse.

But the most glaring of all is how he treats Iroh throughout the series up until Book 3.

This man has been the most consistent and most solid figure in Zuko's life. He supported and protected him. He tried to guide him to make the right choices. And what does Zuko do after all this? He betrays Iroh!

All for what? Because there's one thing Zuko's wanted throughout the series. His honor. His single-minded goal to regain his honor makes him reject these connections because, and this is just me, he doesn't think they'll benefit him in any way. He's thinking about things critically and he doesn't want to show weakness.

You know when he does choose to accept affection? When Azula offers it. You know, the one he says always lies and always has an agenda and is always out to get him.

She's the one she believes and joins time and time again.

The first one we see in season 1. She tells him that "Father wants you back" and Zuko believes her because of how badly he wants what she's saying to be true.

The second season, she tells him she can't take over Ba Sing Se without him and Zuko joins her even when Iroh and literally everyone else wants him not to. He joins her because she has what he wants, a chance to regain his honor.

And so we see in the third season how she expertly manipulates him and then finally finally Zuko realizes what his uncle has been trying to tell him all this time and frees himself and decides his own destiny. He realizes his honor lies elsewhere not in the Fire Nation!

And when he finally tries to offer his help to the gaang, it's on his own terms even if it's the worst timing ever. Zuko even brings back the thing Aang told him in season one about being friends.

So, in short, Zuko is a prickly son of a bitch and that's my TEDtalk.

I want to apologize for the absolute shit pictures but what's new lol

So, let's start with the platform. First thing I noticed was the blue was brighter but the platform was darker? It was like someone cranked up the contrast to 100. Ngl it looked pretty cool. Yoongis platform doesn't typically have a barrier like some of the others do so I just kinda walked in and did the whole, "happy birthday, I have questions" His energy seemed a lot more... vibrant? And playful I guess? It was really nice. Now. The actual connection was intresting because the cord was blue again and like, real thick. (I don't think my perceived thickness of the cord has and real correlation with how strong the connection is. It was just thicc) this time though, the cord was connected at the chest instead of the third eye. So i was like, ??? But my guide didn't give my any sort of helpful input (my guide likes to watch me suffer in my confusion. I'm sure of it)

Anyway, cord like that and then yoobi gave me a headbutt to connect at the third eye. Idk why he gotta be like that :( istg next time he's gonna flick my forehead or something.

Anywho, this was intresting because after the little strings were connected and stuff, we plopped down on the floor. Moving right along. I first asked if there was anything he wanted to say or needed to get across and it was 11. Now, 11 has come up before and I'm still not to sure what it's in reference to? My best guess is possibly he's been seeing 11:11 or that it's 2? Idk let me know if you have any clues lol. Other stuff was just kinda banter and stuff.

The reading. First thing I asked was how he was doing. And I shuffled his preticular way (when I ask a question I always ask for the energy to tell me how much to shuffle or when to stop. The cards we got are ace of swords rev, justice,the heirophant rev, the empress.

So based off this I was like okay. I want to pull clarity cards for the two rev cards to get a better picture so I pulled the emperor rev for ace or swords rev and strength rev and wheel of fortune rev for the heirophant rev.

Starting with the ace of swords rev, and the emperor reverse. It seems like yoongi has been re thinking his relationship to control in his life. That's he's possibly noticing any unhealthy needs to control his life and the situation around him. It could also refer to his judgment being clouded by a rigid approach.

With the justice card it makes me think that he's possibly considering a big choice in his life or that he's really doing some deconstructing of his own views. This second idea fits in well with him getting clarity on some possibly unhealthy control issues in his life.

Now. The heirophant rev, strength rev and wheel of fortune reverse. This was intresting to me bc they are all major arcana. The heirophant rev can really talk about no longer needing outside approval and making your own way in your own time bc you are your own teacher. Strength in rev I kinda read as self doubt and feeling down in this case. Like a lack of confidence in himself and his abilities. And the wheel of fortune in reverse I took to mean as his breaking cycles. All together these cards kinda paint a picture about wanting and trying to break a cycle of self doubt and self limiting beliefs and learning more about himself and why he think what he does about himself and searching through everything for truth. It's really good!! In short he's doing some nice soul searching and trusting himself to guide his own way through this self discovery!

The empress! This card seems to pop up for yoobi a lot and I think it really speaks to the abundance that surrounds him! Not just money but the abundance of creativity, love, friends ect.

Now now now. I asked him if there was anything that he wanted to tell us about himself or bts or what's happening in the near future. For that I got 2 of cups, king of wands and 3 of coins.

So the 2 of cups is partnership. Usually romantic. Could be pertaining to the may 13th thing that is ever present lol but I'll get to that later. With the 3 of coins talking about teamwork, this could definitely hint at collaborations coming up!! That's the vibe I get. No one crush my dreams. And for the king of wands it could be talking about taking the reigns on a new project and starting to get it done. Like a new opportunity. This could be a new bts project like starting a new campaign or new venture or maybe personal like the a mixtape or doing more songs for other groups ect.

I had to ask him how he was feeling about the grammys. I had to. Had to. The cards were ace of wands, 2 of wands and death reverse. When these came flying out I could help but smile. Yoongis energy was almost giddy too!

It's that spark of creativity and inspiration. It's that feeling when you get super excited over some new thing. I think this is the perfect example for feeling reinvigorated. The 2 of wands takes that spark from the ace and tries to funnel that excitement and newness into something directional. Using that burst of creativity to start planning for future progress!! Its so nice to see that! If they don't win (IF) you bet we're gonna get some bangers about a corrupt system. If (WHEN) they do win we'll get bangers about how thankful they are to have gotten where they are in spite of a corrupt system. I just want to hear an uncensored version of yoongi being like, "HOLY FUCKING SHIT, WE DID IT BITCHES. FUCK ALL YOU BASTARDS THAT SAID WE COULDN'T."

Now I asked if there was anything yoobi wanted to say to us as in advice or comfort or anything like that and I got, Clearing negativity, make time for self care, when I'm tuned into the energy of abundance I become abundant. when I'm in a state of appreciation im in vibrational alignment with my true love nature. The world rev, 2 of swords rev and that project, that person, that idea is waiting.

Awe. Take care of yourselves!! Make sure to take time to enjoy what you like and try not to let any negativity get in the way of you enjoying your days. The world rev to me seems to be talking about seeking closure on the things in your life that have been impacting you. Tie up those loose ends so you can move foward without triping over yourself and 2 of swords rev I think talks about information overload and being kinda indecisive bc of that. Take a sep back to evaluate the situation at hand because sometimes it's so close you can't see what you're looking for. Those of you who are studying and getting frustrated because you just can't seem to get it, try taking a step back and doing something to take care of yourself and come back to it so you can approach with a clearer mind. Try not to get stuck or paralyzed by choice but if you do get stuck, take some time to detach yourself from the situation and come back later!

A fair few people wanted an update on yoobis soulmate as well. If you need a refresher here's the run down. Yoongis soulmate is impossible for me to read, yoongi is a smug ass and I'm nosy and probably a little dumb.

Now that that's cleared up

I asked, "am I missing something?" (As to why I can't connect and why yoongi won't give me answers.)

His soulmate last time was in the process of going through some shit and figuring it out and it seems like now they've got a better clue of how to move foward and are currently heading towards good things/ important things in their life (possibly like working towards dream career or had an idea for a business the want to start or field they want to go in.)

The clarifier was the magician.... this could mean a lot honestly. It could be that maybe yoongi will have his relationship exposed or possibly that maybe him and his soulmate meet but yoongi is disguised? Idk how that would work at all but I'm stumped. There's a lot of variations that this could be. The magician is about manifesting and having everything you need to create what you want. This could possibly mean that maybe he gets a sudden idea that's like, "oh I have to go here right now. Its super important" eventhough he has practice scheduled. So that would let down his team but he would be following his path and it might lead to him meeting his soulmate? Maybe vice versa? Idk let me know what you think??

With the judgement its about inner calling and kinda like the peak. Like shit has been leading up to this moment. With the lovers too it does seem like a union?

Fanfiction review : Unexpected

I like sorbet. I do! I prefer it to ice cream, and I would gladly eat half a tub without hesitation. But if I were to eat it every day? I'd get sick of it. It's always bothersome when something like that happens. Especially in literature. Sometimes, a short story is more enjoyable than a lengthy saga. Good things can come in small packages....

... what was I talking about again? Ah, whatever.

Anyway, let's talk about zoophobia fanfiction.

Those who have had the misfortune of reading my last fic review may recall that I went through each and every chapter of TDL's story. This time, however, this will be structured in a sort of ramble. I will be discussing things in sections, and I will give my overall thoughts at the end. This is a review of "Unexpected " by a "Kalum16" , who, if my memory serves me correctly, goes by @kartoonluv on Tumblr. Now, this review was not requested by anyone, so if Kalum (who I'll refer to as KL for brevity's sake) wishes this review to be deleted, I will comply with his wishes. Also, I suggest that you read this on fanfiction.net before continuing with this post.

Something I would like to get out of the way are my views on romance and the story's pairing. I'd like to bring these up now as I will be mentioning them later on.

Firstly, I have never been in a romantic relationship. However, I have been in love before, and I know people who are or who have been in relationships. That being said, I have considered that perhaps my lack of experience will mean that with certain things... I might not get it. The importance of certain events may be lost on me, and I may not be able to connect with things couples do.

I would also like to confess that Kayla x Damian is one of my least favorite ZP ships. The idea that after Damian basically harasses Kayla, manipulates her and Zill, and basically makes their lives miserable for his own gain, that he can be rewarded by getting the girl? Not exactly something I jive with. Also, (and this is my interpretation) I do not think that Damian's feelings towards Kayla are genuine. By that, I think (due to how little they know about each other) Dame is more in love with his idea of who Kayla is. Or, if we weren't going to look to deep into it and say that it's because he has a thing for Christians, it would make Dame's attraction pretty materialistic. Neither idea really screams "good ship!" to me.

That being said, let's discuss how the pairing is handled here. I'm actually on board with this depiction of the relationship. For one thing, it seems that Kay and Dame have become friends. They clearly care about one another before starting a relationship, and the story makes it so that they can relate to each other. This takes away my issue of these characters not acting knowing each other well, and thus the feelings they have towards one another come off as genuine.

I think that the story makes them out to the a cute couple. However, I still have a major issue with it, and the story as a whole.

Basically, (after a while) I think it's boring.

To best explain why, I would first like detour and discuss Damian and Kayla individually.

Ladies first. I have mentioned in previous posts that I enjoyed the first chapter of this story. Back then, I had not read beyond chapter 1, as I hadn't realized that the story had been updated. And you know what? I still stand by that. In chapter 1, Kayla feels a lot more interesting than she is in the comic. It's interesting to see Kay in a situation where she basically gets what she wants, but she ends up hating it. She struggles with writers block, self doubt and regret. It's sad to see how apathetic she's become, and how she no longer holds the ambition she once did.

I also liked that she still had some internalized prejudice against demons. It made sense, and it made what was going on more interesting as it created inner conflict. Now, if the story was just the one chapter, I would have bought that her falling in love with Dame would have made all her prejudice go away. I mean, you would need to wrap it up by the end.

But we got more than 1 chapter, and thus the evaporated prejudice feels kind of contrived and like lost potential. Hell, it would have been interesting if an ongoing subplot involved Kayla conquering her prejudice by learning about demons and debunking the stories that I heard as a kid. Her just yeeting away her prejudice because she falls for one guy feels kind of lame, and going forward, Kayla feels less interesting in the fic.

Originally, she had all this regret and self doubt. While it's great to see her doing good, her issues feel like they've almost all been resolved by a makeout session. Throughout the story, Kay doesn't grow or develop in any way. Her only real issue is "I'm in love with Dame and ppl don't like it, woe is me"

There's this chapter where Dame meets Kay's parents, and I feel like I should be invested, but I'm more confused than anything. The story points out that Kay's parents were ok with Zill (who's part demon, part whatever the fuck), but they're not ok with Dame. I mean, yes, he's the antichrist, but have they not figured out that their daughter is into some weird dudes? Like, they're perspective is painted as "oh, Kay was such a good girl, and yadda yadda", but, again, they were ok with Zill. You'd think that that relationship would at least make them question that idea? Also, why are Kay's parents deer? Am I missing something?

Kay serves really only one role here. She's Dame's gf, she'll defend the relationship to the grave, and she cares about him. She doesn't become much more than that, and every chapter feels like it's redundant in reinforcing that idea. Like...ok, we get it, let's move on.

Does Damian do much here? Not really. He's mainly the inverse of Kayla for the most part, being "I will defend this love, no matter fucking what". The issue being constantly brought up about how he's the antichrist, so "oh no, that makes things difficult ", is always resolved in about a chapter.

The story feels like it's trying to give Damian some development. I mean, I guess he stands up for himself against Kay's parents, and defends her from his? Oh, and there's that moment where he's like "Yo, I have no control over my life, I don't wanna be a prince, you make me happy ", etc. But not even this really does anything. The meeting with his parents feels like a repeat of meeting Kay's parents. We even get the one parent approval, one on one talk, and it's the mom, just like before. Oh, and Dame's emotional "I will reject prince-y ness to be with you " speech? All that leads to is them having sex.

Ok, well, that last one I might give a pass. I don't find sex to be that big a deal, but I know some people view it as this super important thing, so maybe through that lense, I could see sex as being an emotional payoff.

One thing I won't give a pass is chapter 2, which really didn't need to be here. Jack never shows up again, Kayla can be subtracted from this chapter entirely, and the only build up to this was a couple lines in the previous chapter. The chapter itself is alright, but it feels like it should have been it's own separate story. My only idea as to why this chapter should stay is that, apart from Kayla in chapter 1, this is the only chapter with development. Damian owning up for being a shit is great, and it shows some of only god damn growth for anyone here.

Another chapter that didn't need to be here was whichever was the chapter when Zill showed up again. Admittedly, I skipped this chapter almost entirely. Look, he and Kay broke up, and they're dating different people. That's it. That's all we need. I read the first few paragraphs and the last few. I feel like I don't need to read the entire chapter to know that it's just reinforcing the idea of how great a couple Kayla and Damian are. You know, like basically every chapter in here.

My biggest issue overall with this story is the relationship. As much as I've been ragging on this fic, KL is very gifted at writing. There were some instances where a reread or two could fix some wonky sentences (sounds like me reviewing my posts), but overall he does have a good grasp on it.

That being said, the relationship, the core of this story, is not interesting enough to warrant all six chapters. The only issue Kayla and Damian face are the opinions of others. They never have any reason to question the relationship, question themselves as people, or think about how to handle things. It would have been a lot more interesting if we saw them develop the close relationship the story portrays them as having. It would be interesting if we saw them learn more about each other, or discover ways to deal with each other if one of them is being a dumb bitch. We get it. They love and care about each other. The world around them think it's weird. Every chapter just reinforces the same idea again and again.

I think KL could easily make this better. There's a bunch of plot points that are never brought up more than once that could be interesting. For instance, Kayla struggling to write new songs. We could see more of how she and Dame deal with that instead of having them mention "oh yeah, the problem is fixed now ". Does Damian ever earn Jack's forgiveness? Does Kayla learn anything new about demons?

KL, I believe you when you say these two care a lot about each other. And yeah, seeing how they make their relationship work in spite of what others think is an interesting idea on paper. But the characters don't become closer to each other or anything. Why would I be concerned about the issues presented in the story when I know that they're just going to be resolved in the same way?

You know it's kind of like sorbet...

I would still nonetheless recommend this story tho. Again, as much as I've ragged on it, I still think that the story is good. As mentioned before, I don't have much experience with romantic relationships, so perhaps something here could be lost on me. I'm curious to know anyone else's thoughts.
