thinking about the different ways the gang were messed with and bullied in highschool depending on their outward coping skills and it makes me so saddd. joyces was more physically punishing and purposeful humiliation, spiders in hands nd curled fists when she didn't respond like a normal person should. but she's also not stupid and would draw attention away from mac when he'd get into trouble. mac probably got into a lot of fights in school especially to prove himself and his fragile masculinity and sense of identity. but his wasn't the same Kind of bullying as joyce i think. i think it was in middle school when they were bonded at the hip, but he's something else now. i think its not unlike in the gang gets whacked where he thinks he's part of the gang and theyre laughing about killing him later. he'd do anything to prove himself as cool including hurting people he actually cares about but they're just toying with him like a pet. i think he'd accidentally get dennis into trouble with him due to their whole thing. im not as much a dengirl so i dont know how true this is going t be character wise? but he was never Actually popular despite his idea of himself so im not quite sure where he fits in with everything. hes rich and got invited to parties but i dont think many people were actually friends with him, if not hated him. they kept him around more for personal stake than genuine care, and it didn't matter anyway when at the end of it all the golden god went underneath the bleachers with the other two no matter what. the three of them are so tied together in their lives despite their best efforts and i just Think about it a lot

basically when someone tries to tell me dennis is “especially bad” irt misogyny and i respond with “well, theyre all bad people” and they get mad about that, all i’m hearing is that you’ve decided some instances of misogyny are worth purging a character over (dennis) and some aren’t (charlie, mac, frank) which is extremely gross. especially because these arguments are ALWAYS, always coming from a man trying to mansplain misogyny to me, a woman
like..that’s not your call to make! if you’re WILLING to exile one of them for his misogyny, then you have to hate all of them. otherwise you’re just deciding some instances of misogyny are okay. are some sexist acts objectively, in the real world, worse than others? yes, of course. but here’s the thing: taking a stand like that means you’re drawing a line in the sand, in which you’ve categorized things like body shaming, tacit approval of assault, stalking, coercing women into sex, using your position of power as their boss to coerce women into sex, and generally treating women like dirt, all as things that are Okay. which is way, WAY worse than not drawing a line in the sand at all and just saying “yeah, the gang’s all bad, but that’s part of the satire”
you can’t be debating whether specific offenses get a pass or not, that’s not how it works. either it’s satire or it’s unacceptable, but there’s no middle ground because that means you’ve decided that all that other shit doesn’t cross a line. and you ESPECIALLY, especially don’t get to make that call as a man fighting women about it.

Tell me about this MacDennis. Is it a ship name from a tv show?
Anon, I’m sorry this reply is so late. I’ve literally been trying to make a long post to answer you all day, and my app kept crashing at work. So now home, on my laptop, *cracks knuckles* info-dump time!
So yes! MacDennis is the super uncreative ship name for Mac and Dennis from the show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”–y’know, Danny Devito throwing trash around? Charlie asking if Santa Clause fucked his mom? That’s the show!
It’s basically just five horrible people working at a bar and spending their days drinking and engaging in all sorts of mean-spirited shenanigans, often back-stabbing one another along the way. The show is vile, vulgar, crude, utterly hilarious.
And then you have Dennis and Mac. They’re best friends, roommates, and co-owners of the bar.
Tumblr media
Dennis fancies himself the mastermind (and sex appeal) of the group, Mac seems to think of himself as some sort of bodyguard/muscle man. Both of them are totally delusional. I mean, there’s sad undertones to this show because like, both men are working through miserable and lonely childhoods and are inherently unhappy with who they’ve grown into. They spend a lot of time trying to avoid the reality of who they are as people: petty, selfish, desperately alone and craving love but not knowing how to give it.
But MacDennis is a great ship because not only are they canonically codependent idiots who can’t function like proper adults without one another (see Dennis having a hissy fit because he won’t eat an apple unless Mac peels it for him since “that’s where all the toxins are!”) but also, as the show hits its stride in like season 4/5, the actors (who are also the creators/writers of the show) just really get their chemistry PERFECT. The constant looks, smiles, and touches they share are so cute and intimate. I can’t find any photos on Google, but Dennis is constantly touching Mac during the show, to calm him, to reassure him, to ground him.
Tumblr media
And I mean, hello: there’s an episode called “Mac and Dennis Break Up.” it’s what it sounds like–they have a fight and stop being friends and the rest of the gang has to reunite them. But the whole episode is spent treating it like a romantic relationship between two pissy gay men who need each other but are too proud to admit it.
Tumblr media
Examples of canon shit these two idiots do: Pretend to be a gay couple! Call each other every hour that they’re apart to “check in!” Eavesdrop one each other’s phone conversations out of jealousy! Dennis shakes his thong-clad ass at Mac saying “I wanna turn you on!” Mac glues his pubes to Dennis’ face while he’s sleeping! Isn’t there a whole scene where Mac is feeling Dennis’ nipples, or vice versa?? They go out to monthly dinners like it’s a date night! They talk about one another’s muscles and physiques!
Tumblr media
They’re utterly ridiculous, and especially since Mac eventually does come out as gay much later in the show after working through a ton of internalized homophobia, there’s hope that they can both overcome their pasts and find happiness. Ideally together, because they both seem the most relaxed and happy when they’re having their weekly movie nights and throwing back beers together. I’m not caught up with the show, and I know that Dennis kind has a series of mental breakdowns and their friendship is currently in a pretty bad place. But I really have hope for them.
Tumblr media
Because Mac gives Dennis the unwavering trust, validation, and warmth that he’s spent his life chasing.
Because Dennis’s affection and possessiveness satisfy the craving for a sense of belonging Mac has sought since childhood.
They’re both hot messes, but they could make each other SO HAPPY if they just opened their eyes.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk! *end info dump*

kinda ramble-y fic below the cut, includes a metric fuck-ton of angst, macdennis, teen au, drinking, and a Lot of implied abuse/trauma
summary: macs a rebellious 14 year old tht hates the rich, dennis is a dick that really just needs an outlet to share his feelings, theyre sad together
ok no offense but i just...really love the concept of like, teen mac & charlie crashing house parties. them sneaking out of the house together and their late night adventures quickly becoming a blur of adrenaline and laughter as they jus show up at random parties someone down the street is throwing. they show up undetected at the peak of the utter chaos that is teen rebellion, take a shitload of booze, and then ditch just as fast. they go by the train tracks after and get wasted together, drowning out the deafening reality that is their parents dont care enough to notice theyre not at home every night & that life isnt going so well. and for once they can be happy in each others company and have a taste of a childhood they deserved, even if they can only find it at the bottom of a bottle
one night mac goes off by himself, probably because charlie just hasnt been as up to going out. mac has no clue why, the only things charlie’s been sputtering about between drinks every night is his ‘son of a bitch of an uncle’ who moved back in recently. mac doesnt understand and charlie wont give him what he needs to understand it. so mac gives it no second thought. he spots this absolutely huge house in the suburbs. hes never seen something with architecture like this and hell sure as hell never understand how someone can afford so much room, or what its even used for. the yard is donned with blacked out kids he knows from his classes, and the inside of the house is filled with the melody of drunk kids slurring and laughing to party songs.
he decides this is it-this is the one place hell allow himself to go without his best friend. and hell definitely save booze for him. and he wont allow himself to feel guilty for it, he never does anything for himself anyways. he strides in with a nonchalant facade and his best ‘yes-i-definitely-belong-here’ smile from cheek to cheek, waving at classmates that never noticed him before and definitely wont now. which is the only advantage that comes from being the rat, one of the sore losers in the bullshit hierarchy that is high school popularity. nobody will notice when youre taking something right infront of them.
he makes it to the kitchen and finally pieces together who lives here-its the piece of shit he has half his classes with, the word snob as a person, someone he cant help but loathe for his gross elitism. its dennis reynolds. some kid thats really full of himself, someone who helped trademark ‘the rat’ and laughs at mac while hes down. he didnt really mind, its not like he was bullying charlie, and he was strong enough to take the half-assed insults this guy threw at him. it wasnt a big deal.
but here, now-he found dennis in the midst of his own party, alone in the kitchen, half-empty bottle of tequila in tow, and what looked like mascara trailing from his eyes. what a pussy is what he was about to say, but something stopped him. dennis looked at the other boy looming over him and flinched, covering his face instantly. mac was confused, what the hell was he doing that for? when dennis realized he was fine, he instantly tried to revert back to his cool guy defense mode. something compelled mac to crouch down next to him because, well geez, the poor kid was a mess.. and he felt like it humanized him. the urge to steal his things for a taste of a life he never had slowly died down as he said hello to the gracious party host himself. “why-are-you-here”s  were spit out instantly, because dennis didn’t remember inviting some dirty street rat to his party. mac gave a really half-assed excuse, which was all he needed to convince dennis he was supposed to be here, considering all his thoughts were mush from how out of it he was-he never had the opportunity to drink this much on account of his sister beating him to it, or his mom emptying everything after heated arguments with his dad. and although it annoyed him when she was drunk, it was better than falling asleep to the melody of fighting and the threat of an impending divorce.
but anyways, now mac is lost in his eyes and they’re both half a bottle of tequila down, and he isnt sure if hes holding his hand or just dreaming it. and oh god, his eyes are so beautiful and his lips are coated with strawberry chapstick and he wants to kiss them so bad, he wants to keep holding his hand for all of eternity but at the same time he wants to hold his face in his hands and wow he wants to kiss him so bad and to taste the strawberry chapstick and god, hes infatuated. he wants to wipe his tears away and to kiss his rosy cheeks and run his hands through his hair, so bad. and it hits him that hes too deep, what would charlie think of this? falling for the enemy? fuck. but that doesnt matter because all that matters now is the fact hes really hand in hand with someone hes fallen in love with, and all it took was talk of trauma and a bottle of tequila.
theyre no longer on the kitchen floor as theyre giggling hand in hand stumbling up the stairs, leaning on each other and shushing one another as they laugh too hard to smile right and their cheeks are flush and they arent sure if its the drinking or their company. theyre trying to be quiet as they close the door to the twins’ room and dennis tries to lock it with a shaky hand. mac watches him in utter jaw-dropping awe, feeling butterflies fill his stomach and suffocating any insecurity hed ever felt before. this was new to him. but dennis felt it even stronger. hed spent so long building up a wall, hed spent so long listening to his mothers vodka-fueled lectures about never letting yourself fall in love. barbara made him promise hed never do that to himself, it hurt too much she told him. but now he was sitting on the top bunk of his bed with what seemed to be the boy of his dreams, he didnt know he could ever feel this way or honestly feel anything at all, and he was too drunk to feel guilty for it.
hours pass and now mac is laying on his bare chest. dennis has his hands intertwined in his hair and hes taken away by how soft it is when he strokes it. macs never felt a wave of clarity envelop him so softly before. hes at peace. all the droning hum of party music is drowned out. all he can hear is the soft rhythm of their hearts and their cautious breathing, both scared that this still might not be real. macs heart flutters when he realizes dennis’ breathing gets faster as he moves his hand across his chest, and he looks up with half-slit puppy dog eyes that dennis is absolutely in love with. mac opens his mouth to speak, but changes his mind. he doesnt wanna jinx it, hes so scared he wont be able to impress cool kid dennis reynolds, and he doesnt wanna do anything to change this moment. he plays it safe. as he snuggles closer, dennis holds him and macs face is the warmest its ever been, and he buries it in the other boys chest. he doesnt know how to react to this, hes never known how to react to anything but especially nothing like this. his face is even warmer than macs and hes trying so hard to not let him know that he likes him because thats something his mom would be ashamed of. mac falls asleep on his chest, and dennis cant stop playing with his hair.
dennis wakes him up because he knows everything would be ruined if anyone found them together, especially his sister. god knows what she would do. and dennis tries to tell him he should leave, but the words choke him too much to come out when he sees macs adorable face glance up at him. and hes just too shy to say a word.
the next thing they know, dennis pulls him closer and theyre both kissing for the first time, and mac feels wrong. he wants to push him away and he knows he should feel absolutely horrible, he knows god would be disappointed in something like this and hes terrified of the consequences hell get. but he pushes the thoughts away and succumbs to the warmth that surrounds his body. dennis is holding him so gently and neither want to ever move again, and something compels them to stay together. the kiss is only broken by dennis’ nervous laughter, and a smile that he cant hide. and when the boys recollect themselves they start kissing again. they never went further than that, partially because they couldnt get it up this drunk and partially because they were too scared to ruin it, but it was still nice to fall asleep side by side, even if they didnt mean to
mac wakes up to the soft golden smile of the suns rays against the bed, and he vaguely remembers last night. panic sets in like it never has before. hes never stayed somewhere else this late before. what if charlie’s looking for him. what if whoever hes with didnt lock the door and someone saw him. and then he remembers who hes with, and hes terrified. what the hell did he do? he feels tears of shame well up because he knows hes a sinner in gods eyes and hes made the biggest mistake of his life, and oh fuck when he tried to get out from under the covers he woke dennis up. he isnt even half as shocked as mac is, hes calm. hes happy. hes never woke up so peacefully before, and hes grinning. he tries to tell mac good morning but hes rambling under his breath about how wrong this is and hes going to hell, and dennis takes that as a sign he shouldve taken his mothers advice. hes utterly crushed.
mac doesnt even apologize as he leaves, he slips on his boots and gets out as soon as he can despite the wavering tone in dennis’ protests and pleads to stay. he forgets his jacket during the rush. he leaves dennis confused and more scared of opening up than hes ever been, and he doesnt know how to deal with his feelings anymore. mac tries to forget everything. he never tells charlie. he doesnt ever want to look dennis in the eyes again. he never wants to feel that way again, because he went from feeling on top of the world to being ashamed and thinking he knows its wrong. he doesnt tell anyone.

Ok so i was thinking about this post by @newbads all day and specifically like. When and how did dennis start acting distant around Mac? but i kind of went off on a tangent not rly related to that post so heres on its own, like, sort of a timeline i guess, starting from mortgage crisis and ending with ddl
(i actually started this like a week ago and then got stuck halfway through and now school has started again so i wont probably have time to come back to it like i’d want, so i’m posting it as is and pls feel free to contribute later stuff if u want to :))))
Hypothesis: Dennis is super touchy and affectionate in season 5, freaks out after Break Up when he realises his feelings for mac, temporarily distances himself a little bit for a while (including marrying maureen), but mostly still pretty close. After Mac Day starts getting especially distant and it only gets worse over time, reaches a peak in s12 after Mac comes out in HoHC, and its evident by DDL that this is not sustainable and something drastic has to change.
read more because its fuckn long for a dashboard tbh, sorry
Tumblr media
Mortgage Crisis- Dennis cant keep his hands off Mac for this whole episode, even when its unclear whether theyre actually pretending to be a couple yet, hes just Like That. And hes clearly super comfortable with pretending to be a couple, like absolutely no qualms whatsoever, totally willing to give out random superfluous information about their relationship to strangers without a second thought.
Tumblr media
Break up- Dennis Realises™ and has this series of expressions before literally blatantly checking Mac out (you could also say the important moment of realisation here is the date at the end and ‘beautiful lips’ but since thats technically not canon lets go with this) He’s clearly panicked about this and even though they make up by the end of the ep theres a definite shift because the next 3 episodes are then:
Dennis aggressively asserting his straightness basically (D.E.N.N.I.S. System)
Dennis aggressively ignoring Mac (to be fair, ignoring everyone else too) (Mac And Charlie Write A Movie)
Not particularly relevant to the larger macdennis plot but does have Dennis complaining abt a homophobic joke so… (Reignites the Rivalry)
Tumblr media
Mac Fights Gay Marriage/Dennis Gets Divorced which is Dennis reacting like this to Mac ranting about gay marriage, impulsively marrying Maureen, kicking Mac out, and then divorcing maureen after like 2 days while calling mac his boy toy and pointedly looking at him when he tells maureen he never loved her.
Then we dont really get any more episodes with macdennis teamups (the closest are ones with the whole gang or all the guys) until the end of season 8. But theyre still pretty close and touchy most of the times they are together, and that s8 episode is Dines Out so like, maybe the actual episodes haven’t teamed them up, but Dennis is definitely not what you could call distant at this point yet and certainly not distant enough that Mac has noticed anything.
Tumblr media
So arguably the turning point is Mac Day where you get the first time Dennis says he hates mac, after hes faced with country mac who’s kind of an ‘idealised’ version of what our mac could be and points out a lot of his failings just by being there (someone else wrote a thing abt this i dont remember who it was sry but it was really good, if anyone knows the post i mean pls link me and ill add it here because basically: that post.) And also the first non-joking explicit mention of Mac being gay, like the one in Mac’s Banging The Waitress doesnt really seem serious ya know. And then almost immediately after that Dennis tries to confront Mac about facing up to his delusions about himself- nominally about being badass but….in context…
Its also maybe worth noting that they lose the Macdennis ApartmentTM  for the first time like 5 episodes later.
Updated hypothesis before i continue: actually Dennis doesnt really seem to get that remarkably distant until like s10- theres definitely a downturn after season 5 but not as sharply as i thought. Early on Dennis seems to act on it in some way every time Mac’s sexuality or their relationship is brought up but each time is pushing it a bit less, either because he gets wary of doing anything too risky after he keeps going back in the closet or because the closer they get to finally being done with Mac being in the closet, the closer they get to Dennis having to deal with his own sexuality. Maybe both. Also, while overall there’s less touching/fondness/sexual undertones than there used to be, when he does, those individual instances are... A Lot.
Ok and then i was gonna talk about Spies Like US, Suburbs, Goes to hell, HoHC, Tends Bar, and DDL but i really dont have time and i typed this in like 6 hours of hyperfocus hell and no longer remember where i was going with it anyway lmao

🅱️lease overanalyze macdennis for us
it’s so genuinely upsetting that mac was gonna kiss dennis in recycles their trash just because he was excited! we’ve seen how they buffer their affections with drinking, with drugs, with playing characters, etc. and never ever EVER act out on their true feelings. ESPECIALLY if they aren’t alone.
it’s interesting because there’s plenty of instances in canon, before this, where dennis clearly wanted to kiss mac. in mortgage crisis after they made a sale is the clearest example - but i’ll get back those instances later. but when mac tries to kiss him, dennis pulls away, and you can see that he’s shaken up - but if he feels the same way, it’s very likely just because he didnt expect it.
Tumblr media
^picture of dennis being shook and gay
anyway. i’d argue that dennis didnt really wanna pull away - he was just unprepared for it, for that crossing-the-line they dont usually do (in public) when theyre out in the open, and with charlie. i’d even say that it’s not even because theyre covered in trash, because imo theyre always covered in trash, figuratively if not literally, and dennis fell for him anyway.
so, what do we see following these episodes? dennis pulling away more because mac tried to kiss him, a very clear declaration that theyre not just friends?
no, actually. we see dennis trying his best to say, in his own way, that he didnt mean to reject him. it was just a frightened, knee-jerk reaction. he wants this too. hes in love too. the episodes immediately following recycles their trash go like this: dennis publicly plays a video of mac getting plowed (and says, “nice, huh?”). dennis stares at mac’s lips in gets analyzed/looks at him like hes absolutely fucking lovesick. dennis tries desperately to knock some feelings loose when mac criticizes him for not having any.  franks back in business, when dennis asks them to get off together, and then does get off to the fight milk video. the entirety of gang dines out.
what im saying is....dennis wanted to kiss him back. he’s probably spent the next five years wishing he had.
