Chapter 3 - Stoppable Family Vacation

Chapter 3 - Stoppable Vacation Curse - Part II

"Kim, girl, don't you remember the last time you had a vacation with the hubs?" Monique said before pulling out her smartphone and scrolled down to the last family vacation the Stoppables had.

It read "MS Gulf Coast, May 2018."

"Ah...yes. The second worst family vacation we ever been on!" Kim groaned, recalling the memories of that vacation while hooking back up the undone strap of her overalls. "The one where we had to do a photoshoot for Club Banana for their summer swimwear AND the same weekend we had to take care of Mr. Barkin's prized 200-pound hog, Princess AND his cat, Lady Whiskerboots."

__________________________________________________________________________________ (May 4, 2018, Gulfport, Mississippi) The Stoppables were driving along in the 1996 Drudge Tangerine minivan in downtown Gulfport. It was in ugly avocado green and had fake wood paneling on the doors. Kim had known to call it the Stoppable-mobile. The Tangerine's only damage was a bit of rust on the roof of the car and the lovebugs that perished on the bumper of the car. In that car, on the third row, were also seven bikinis of different designs that Kim was going to try out on the beaches of the Gulf Coast and that Ron was going to photograph for the CB website, courtesy of Monique. Princess was also belted in the third row. Lady Whiskerboots was also in the third row as well. Kim was in a white shirt, baggy denim overalls, both straps hooked combo while Ron was in the 3 Wolves shirt and jeans combo. The windows, however, were all rolled down for a reason.

"Ah, KS, can you feel the warm breeze in the air, the roar in the ocean...." Ron said with a smile before his wife chirped in, holding her nose desperately while trying to drive.

"...the awful smell of that hog waste and the smell of cat litter?" Kim retorted. "I've been trying to hold my nose in for about 700 of the 1300 plus miles on this drive from her! And I've also had it up to here with the lovebugs being splattered against the bumper!"

It showed that the front bumper of the car was covered in the remains of lovebugs splattered at a high speed.

"Princess is a him, Kim." Ron countered on the pig's gender, "Don't ask why Barkin named him that way. Although I can see why Lady Whiskerboots is a she. She's quite feisty like yourself!!"

"Whatever..." Kim muttered, "It's bad enough that we get Barkin's pet duty while HE'S on vacation in Hawaii, but why did it have to be the same weekend as the CB Annual Swimsuit Extravaganza that Monique is going to hold tonight? And when did Princess do his business?"

"Two hours ago. And can you cut...." came Ron's reply. Princess snorted and Ron could hear a rumble in her stomach.

"Kim, she has to go again!" Ron said.

"Ron, I am NOT going to get out of this vehicle!" Kim retorted, "We have to make it in time for the CB Summer Gala tonight, for Martin Smarty is going to be there!"

Princess got up from his position and came up to the front seat.

"The piggy is smelly!" Alexa complained from her car seat. "And the cat is all fluffy."

"I don't wanna get my clothes muddy!" Justin agreed with her sister.

"Kim?! That's no way to talk to a pig like that, isn't that right, Princess?" Ron exclaimed as he petted Princess on his head. Princess squealed with delight and rubbed Ron's face.

"See? Even though he's technically Barkin's, he's like family to me! We raced him with Rufus back at the Middleton Smarty-Mart a couple years ago." Ron said, reflecting on the bonding experience they had before hearing Rufus chittering in protest over that remark.

"Ooops....I mean, an extended family member, but Rufus is the most important one that I have!" Ron corrected himself.

Rufus smiled and hugged his owner.

Kim groaned. "Just as soon as we get done with the photo-shoot for Club Banana this evening, we'll celebrate on the beach on Saturday and Sunday and then drive back for Monday and Tuesday!" Lady Whiskerboots, meanwhile, moved from her position on the third row onto the bikinis.

Ron replied, "Sounds like a good plan to me!"

Then they noticed, along the corner of Highway 49 and 14th St., a line of protesters to either side of the street. "Oh no...." Kim groaned. "Not these people again!!"

"Why do they have to follow us everywhere we go?" Ron whined.

They numbered about 25 even on both sides of the street, roped off by police. As it turned out, the left side of the street were filled with protestors for the KP live-action movie and the right side of the street were protestors against it. Police barricaded the protestors on both sides to prevent a riot.

Signs on the pro-LAM said "She's 17, just deal with it!" "Don't over-sexualize her!" and "She is NOT working for a secret agency" while the anti-LAM side had signs that said "She is NOT our Kim Possible! Why can't they choose someone else?!", "She has to work for a secret agency! It's what the show stated from the beginning!" and "She has to be a 26-year old actress to play the role of a 14-year old girl!"

"Kim, let's get out of here!" Ron exclaimed.

"I'm right behind ya, Ron!" Kim yelled, slamming on the gas and avoiding the protesters. They got onto US 90 and headed east.

"Ron, can you check the bikinis to make sure they're all right?" Kim asked. Ron turned his head and saw that the bikinis were over Lady Whiskerboots claws. She began to immediately shred into them but Kim couldn't see the damage because she was focused on the road.

"Uh...KS? You may wanna stop now." Ron said, knowing what was going to happen to the pig. "Princess can't keep it any longer."

"Ron?! Can Princess hold it in for 20 minutes?" Kim asked, still not looking behind and concentrating on the road.

"Actutally...."

Kim slammed on the braked at a nearby beach parking lot and looked behind. Her jaw dropped at what Lady Whiskerboots did to the bikinis.

"OH NO!!! LADY WHISKERBOOTS SHREDDED THE BIKINIS!!! MARTIN SMARTY IS GOING TO KILL US!!!!"

And then she looked at what Princess was going to do. Princess raised his buttocks in the air over the bikinis.

"DON'T DO IT, PRINCESS!!!!"

But it was too late.

"NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" ______________________________________________________________________________ (back to the present day)

"Had it not been for Ron's call to Mr. Smarty, we wold've had to pay $4,000 in damages to those bikinis, and the Stoppable-mobile still reeks of hog waste." Kim sighed.

"Mmm...hmm." Monique muttered, "Thankfully, no bikinis smelled of pig manure in the gala."

"That's always the thing. It's either Ron or me that has managed to at least salvage those vacations." Kim said.

Ron knocked on the door and asked, "Hey, everyone. And hey, KS! I was wondering where ya went to after dinner. Can I come in?"

"Sure you can, Ron!" she smiled, opening the door for her husband.

Ron came in alongside with Rufus also saw Tara, the Halls and Rentons.

"What's going on here?" he questioned.

"It's the ish of the family vacation, Ron." Kim replied.

Ron sighed, "Yeah, I kinda feared that part was going to come up."

Rufus shuddered at that..."Vacation!"

"You do?" Kim asked.

"Yeah, I saw it from the look of your eyes at the dinner table, Kim." Ron said, reading his wife like a book. "It's the Stoppable Vacation Curse, isn't it."

"Yes." Kim admitted.

"Yeah...." Ron replied, scratching his back, "...it's always been an issue for me even before we said our 'I dos'."

"I'm gonna use the little girls room for a bit." Kim whispered to her husband, pointing to her overalls bib, "The bib's really irritating my skin."

"Okay, hon!" Ron smiled, kissing Kim on the lips before she headed to the bathroom.

Joe’s Weather Blog: A mess of a snowstorm that will still pan out (I think) (FRI-1/10)

So let’s see…a record high yesterday…66° breaking the previous record from 1902 (64°)…thunderstorms to start the day…freezing rain to finish tonight and an accumulating snow to start the weekend…oh and sneaky fast potent wave on Sunday afternoon that may create some sort of wintry mix later in the game…nope nothing to see in KC weather.

On top of all that…a significant severe weather outbreak today and tomorrow down south of the region…potentially some strong>severe storms in SE KS and southern MO today as well…freezing rain in northern MO…winter storm warnings all over the place…flash flooding possible in parts of MO and elsewhere…nope…nothing to see here.

Let’s get into things…good morning.

Forecast:

Today: Periods of rain…temperatures holding steady…30s northside…40s southside…60s much farther south towards the Lakes region.

Tonight: Slowly falling temperatures…rain slowly transitions to light freezing rain…then some sleet possible. Amounts will be light but with the falling temperatures and the increasing winds…IF we don’t dry things out…we’ll see a flash freeze occur. That means whatever is wet will freeze over late tonight into Saturday morning. Temperatures towards daybreak near 20°

Saturday: Snow develops in the morning…some moderate to heavy snow is still likely later in the morning into the afternoon…3-7″ possible as the colder air deepens and the snow gets fluffier and piles up more efficiently. With that said there are going to be areas that may very well struggle to 3″…and I can’t rule out parts of the Metro being in that area. Temperatures steady around 20° with wind chills in the single digits and blowing snow as well. Bad travel conditions

Sunday: Sunny and cold in the morning…single digits…then increasing clouds with some light precip possible later in the afternoon…could be some light freezing drizzle or snow mix. Temperatures near 30°

Discussion:

So this is a hot mess…and my confidence in the specifics isn’t the greatest at this point. Pretty much everything I wrote yesterday still applies…the forecast will be right for hopefully many areas but it WILL BE wrong for some. Hopefully NOT for the KC Metro…but there remain all sorts of ways this could blow up in my face regarding snow accumulations tomorrow and I’m not too thrilled about it right now.

The data today isn’t really helping my thought process much…in many ways…nothing has changed and in some ways things have changed…which sounds cryptic I know…but there are parts of this I’m not confident about.

Let’s start with what is happening now…all the watches and warnings around the country…from severe weather to winter weather to flooding potential.

Pretty good Christmas tree look to things above.

Radar this morning has been active at times…and yes you did hear some rumbles of thunder earlier…a few more are possible today as well.

Our next wave is starting to come together in the southern Plains and will lift towards KC this afternoon as the rain increases this afternoon locally.

Some light freezing drizzle may be falling now across NW MO towards the NE/IA border…that will progress southwards this afternoon especially.

There will be some dry times and wet times today…more wet this afternoon it appears from KC southwards at least.

The storm in question is now diving into New Mexico.

and will come into the southern Plains tomorrow and through MO tomorrow afternoon. Overall the track isn’t terrible for snow here.

We though need to wait for the atmosphere as a whole to turn below freezing. This was all explained yesterday but in a nutshell, while we’ll be cold enough at the surface tonight…above us there will remain a “warm” layer of air that will melt the flakes as they fall. In reality that warm layer of air is only a few degrees above 32°. That needs to be eradicated before we can even talk about snow in KC. That will happen tomorrow morning towards daybreak.

Back to the surface…here are the 9AM temperatures…with the freezing line NW of KC…it may not much much today…until early this evening.

Oh and that’s some cold air up in NE poised to come southbound overnight with the stiffening winds from the north blowing it towards us.

In the interim it’s complicated. As I type this the sun is making an appearance at my house on the south side. Temperatures may start creeping upwards a few degrees before the next wave of rain comes in. We’re in the mid 30s northside to low 40s southside at 9AM…the HRRR model may not be handling temperatures the best but it shows a rather stark contrast this afternoon developing.

For 12PM today…

Again perhaps a bit too aggressive and maybe you trim a few degrees from those METRO numbers at 1PM…then the colder air does start to work southwards..so that by 6PM we have this…the freezing line near the St Joe area.

Again this is at the surface…there is that pesky above 32° layer aloft that needs to be wiped away.

So what happens today?

We get periods of liquid rain.

Tonight what is falling will gradually transition to freezing rain…but I’m not confident beyond a glaze of ice (ice is ice…it’ll get gradually more slick…especially on bridges and overpasses later tonight) how much actual ice will fall locally because after the wave of rain comes through later today…there may be a lull again tonight of just some lighter stuff out there. Again a glaze is a glaze but this won’t be an ice storm per say…

I just don’t think we get much overnight tonight…again whatever is wet will freeze and glaze things up so the roads will be impacted for sure…especially bridges and overpasses.

So that by 3AM…these are roughly the forecast temperatures…

That will freeze everything that’s wet beforehand. IF nothing is falling they can do treatments for the roads though.

Now about the snow.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of the region.

All that pink you see is the warning. The dark green is the flash flood watch and the light green the flood warnings.

The snow aspect still looks good…it will snow…the issue is the amounts and whether or not some sleet in the early or mid morning cuts the snow amount potential a bit

The NAM certainly feels this way for areas east and south of I-35 tomorrow morning…where there may be a period of a few hours with an atmosphere more conducive to sleet or a mix than snow. The hi-res NAM though has a snowpalozza on the Metro.

heck even the Canadian model is going for the gusto.

So something white has to happen right?

It will come down to how well the comma-head part of the storm is organized and how it fills in. I know I wrote about this yesterday…IF it’s a healthy comma-head…3-7″ is likely in the KC region (assuming there are now shifts in the track). IF it’s unorganized and not solid and filled in well…sort of broken in nature…then the amounts will struggle to 3″ and parts of KC will struggle even more.

NW MO is really a toughie for forecasting snow with this…in terms of the amounts. I just have a feeling the worst will stay south of them tomorrow in terms of snow…and perhaps tonight as well.

Hopefully the snow aspect comes through on this…because to me that is how we’ll be “graded” when this is over and done with.

Next up…and this blog is getting long…is Sunday afternoon. There is a potent wave coming our way. The atmosphere is going to try and recover moisture…but there is a lot happening. Don’t be shocked…as I mentioned last night…of some sort of wintry mix developing at some point in the 2nd half of the game. It should be light and not impactful BUT I can see this weird path where there is some sort of weird wind blown something coming through that people will be saying no-one said THIS was going to happen…except I said this could happen last night.

More on that tomorrow or Sunday…one mess at a time.

2K17 Midwest Road Trip

The weekend of August 11, 2017, I took a road trip with one of my day-1 homies. We go back to 3rd grade Mr. Mule’s class at Washington Elementary School! His family moved to Tennessee when we went to middle school he lives in Memphis, TN now, so we don’t get to connect much. Since we both turned that “30 ball” this year, we decided that it was the perfect time link up for a road trip! I took plenty of pictures and videos during our jaunt - most of which is staying in the vault... BUT, we learned a lot and it would be a crime if I didn’t share some of it.

The route was Memphis, TN - Kansas City (MO & KS) and Omaha, NE. My focus on these road trips is to “do my history” which is Black American history. It seems random, but I chose Omaha because:

It’s the birthplace of Malcolm X, and

there is NO CITY IN AMERICA that black people have not left a lasting impression. Our history is alive all over this country.

The trip was amazing, and I hope you enjoy!

Memphis 8.10.17

I took a 1-way flight to Memphis Thursday night. Made it into town just in time to hit an after work happy hour. This one happened to be on the roof of the Peabody Hotel - a historic hotel downtown. There was a band playing rock music, and I was pleased to hear them do a couple Chuck Berry classics (Berry is a brother from STL that invented Rock N’Roll).

The most amazing part of the night was striking up a conversation with this group of sisters - there were six of them. It started with small talk, and eventually we learned that it was a group of SIX BLACK FEMALE LAWYERS studying at the Univ. of Memphis! They were out celebrating their homegirl’s 30th birthday...real life #BlackGirlMagic. I thought that was dope!

We ended up walking Beale St. for a bit before heading back home to get some rest before the trip.

Kansas City (KS & MO) 8.11.17

We hit the road for KC at about 8:30a (two hours later than planned). After a good 7 hours of driving, we made it to KC. Interesting thing about KC is there are two sides - KC Missouri (which was a slave state) and KC Kansas (a free state). Our first stop was on the Kansas side. We drove straight to a neighborhood just west of the Missouri river called Quindaro.

Quindaro was a boom town started in the 1850s. Since it was right on the river in the free state of Kansas, it eventually became an underground railroad stop for Black people escaping slavery. We visited an overlook structure built at the top of a hill where you could see the Missouri River valley and the trail that people took as they left the river en route to Nebraska - which was the next stop on our trip! An inscription in the overlook described the fight that ensued to preserve Quindaro and keep it from becoming a landfill! It was powerful just being there!

Quindaro was also home to the Quindaro Freedman’s School, which opened during reconstruction after the Civil War. The Freedman’s School eventually grew to become Western University, an HBCU run by the AME church.

In 1911, the AME Bishop granted Western University funds to erect a statue of freedom fighter John Brown on the campus. When we walked down to view the statue, the wildest thing happend. A man named Leo was out walking his five dogs (none of which were on leashes). Leo turned out to be a retired teacher, and he told us all about the statue - as well as Quindaro!

We were crashing with my homie’s family that night. After we left the Quindaro site, we got cleaned up at his people’s crib, and hit the KC Chiefs v. SF 49ers preseason game. The tickets we bought were cheap, which means we got bad seats. We didn’t get to Arrowhead Stadium until the 4th quarter, and by that time, the ushers weren’t really trippin about people moving to different seats. Instead of going up to the nosebleeds, we went down to the field! The down side is, they weren’t selling beer anymore either (they stop selling at the end of the 3rd qtr)...

As far as the game, the Chiefs were pretty much imploding when we got there. We walked in on the 49ers scoring a 2pt conversion to tie the game 17-17. The 9ers went on the score a couple more times and it was a wrap. The stadium atmosphere was amazing though! It was my first time seeing an NFL game!

After the game we went downtown KCMO to check out “KC Power & Lights.” It was cool down there, great to see how they redeveloped an old power utility into a performance venue with bars and restaurants.

The next day, we got up and knocked out the 3 hour drive to Omaha, NE.

Omaha, NE 8.12.17

After checking into the hotel, we hit the streets of Omaha. I researched this place called the Great Plains Black History Museum and that was the 1st place we visited. Their original building is in disrepair, and they moved to a retail space at the Crossroads Mall as a temporary show room for some of their artifacts. There was a volunteer on hand named Frank Hayes. He showed us around the space and we ended up having an AMAZING conversation with the brother. Turns out, he’s the founder and principal of Nebraska’s 1st Black owned accounting firm!

Him and my homie kinda got into a debate because they fall on two seperate ends of the political spectrum, which was hilarious to watch! No pics here, unfortunately.

We left the museum and stopped at the site of Malcolm X’s birth home. The house in no longer standing, but there is a foundation named after brother Malcolm that’s developing an 11 acre plot of land into a museum, garden and outdoor amphitheater.

While we were there, another wild thing happened. We ran into a guy named Jed. Jed was from Omaha, but had never visited the Malcolm X site. He said he was a single father that found some free time and decided to stop by. We talked a little about the Autobiography of Malcolm X, and how when Jed read it in college it changed him as an individual. He said that “with everything that happened in Charlottesville today, this is the day I needed to come here.”

Our next stop was to hit N. 24th St - I wanted to see the Omaha Star building. The Omaha Star is the last black owned newspaper in Nebraska, and one of the only ones left in America! The paper was founded in 1938 by a sister named Mildred Brown! Thought it was significant in the age of FAKE NEWS, that this sister created a media platform for us by us!

Across the street from the Omaha Star was a small blue building with a long awning. There was no real signage, but the front door was open and music was coming out. There was a little sign hanging next to the door stating that NO ONE UNDER 30 YEARS OF AGE IS PERMITTED TO ENTER. Us being two new members of the 30 club, we had to investigate. It turned out to be a sort of juke joint called Jesse’s Place. The brother at the bar carded us immediately. He didn’t quite get the math right on our ages, saying that we were “close enough,” before happily serving us both.

We sat and talked with a couple of older ladies for a bit. I struck up a conversation with a sister named Marilynn Devereaux (last name is pronounced this way, not sure of the exact spelling. She made it clear that her name didn’t have an “A” in it like the white folks lol). Marilynn was happy to learn that we were traveling to connect with Omaha’s Black history. She told us that her family is one of the first three Black families that came to Omaha in 1905. She introduced us to a number of people including Mr. Union, who was in his 80s and a member of another one of the oldest Black families in Omaha. According to Marilynn, he was also thee Gabrielle Union’s great uncle!

It was already a long day, and I was feeling every bit of my 30 years but we were on a roll! We stopped for food at Time Out Foods for some wings, and headed downtown to Old Market. I learned that this part of downtown Omaha was a former meat packing district that was redeveloped into an entertainment district. There were lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. We found a spot that had a pretty good DJ and kicked it!

We got up Sunday and visited St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first black church organized in Omaha! When asked, we stood and introduced ourselves, and were very well received by the congregation. I was impressed and pleased by the minister delivering a message that addressed the Charlottesville terror attack that had taken place the day before!

After service, they served burgers and peach cobbler down in the basement of the church (it was left over from a function they hosted the previous week). I got to talk with some of the elders about the church’s history. One sister gave us a tour of the church’s “history room!”

After church, we hit the highway to end our road trip, headed back to our hometown Rockford, IL.

I took the day off Monday, but still had A LOT of stuff to take care of back home. One of the biggest things was to do some work for my “W-2 job” (I have about 6 other jobs too lol). I organized a job fair in the Ellis Heights neighborhood (west side Rockford), and needed to do some last minute canvassing ahead of our event. My boy got up and helped me hit the pavement to get the word out about my event! (The pic is him and my sister’s bf)

The weekend was a whirlwind! As dead tired as I was, I enjoyed every minute. It was great learning that rich history - I’m always so motivated by our people and our story! But it was even better getting to reconnect with one of my childhood friends. The midwest road trip is one we’ll never forget!
