Here at The Open Door, we are turning our attention to education for the next few episodes. This week (May 1) we will consider the growing trend of homeschooling. Our special guest is Patrice Fagnant-MacArthur. She is a lifelong Catholic who has been homeschooling her three children, two of whom are grown, for 17 years. In a welcome effort to provide both information and inspiration for homeschool families, she has managed, for over a decade, the Today's Catholic Homeschooling Website. From there folks can access her Homeschooling Resource Guide for free, along with a variety of helpful articles and book reviews. She herself has written a number of books, including The Crash Course Guide to Catholic Homeschooling. Patrice is a Member of the Catholic Writers' Guild and Catholic Library Association. She has a Master's Degree in Applied Theology and 20 years of experience working for the New Evangelization. Among the questions we’ll ask are the following. Please don’t hesitate to ask your own!
Perhaps we should begin by defining our terms. What is homeschooling? Simply doing school at home? What makes it "official"?
We are pretty sure homeschooling is on the rise, but do you have any stats that might help us understand the reality by the numbers?
What are the reasons people most often choose to homeschool, in your experience?
What are some common misconceptions about homeschooling?
No doubt some criticisms of some homeschoolers are on the mark. Do any examples come to mind?
Some families feel called to homeschool throughout high school, often with the support of local or online educational services to one degree or another. As more and more kids have become homeschool graduates, are there any notable, established outcomes we are seeing that reflect the positive potential of this educational path?
We’ve all heard about teacher burnout. Is there homeschooling burnout? If so, what are the causes...and remedies?
Homeschooling parents come from many backgrounds. Are there some conversations across different backgrounds that you think might be productive but perhaps do not yet see?
Parents are the first educators of their children, and children are not the mere creatures of the State. Doesn’t it follow that the State’s role in education should be carefully limited?
Any other food for thought you'd like to offer for our listeners?

#kimickaphotoaday April Day 28: Favorite(s) Evanescence has been one of my favorite bands for a LONG time. Like. A LONG LONG TIME. I’m pretty sure my introduction was Bring Me To Life, but, like, I remember borrowing my uncles copy of The Open Door for weeks at a time and playing it on repeat for hours. I think my sister and I used to even have it as one of the CDs we fell asleep to. (Along w/ Gwen Stefani’s The Sweet Escape, and others in our 5 CD changer stereo, lol). But, honestly, all of Evanescence’s music is just so good. And no one can match Amy Lee’s vocals. And I had to post about them for this prompt because I have been listening to (almost) nothing but Evanescence since their new single, Wasted On You was released 5 days ago. I don’t currently own a physical Evanescence album, which is why you get this collage. Lol. I should work on getting physical copies. Lol. #evanescence #evanescencefan #amylee #favorites #favorite #music #alternativemetal #love #bringmetolife #fallen #theopendoor #synthesis #thebittertruth #wastedonyou #callmewhenyouresober # https://www.instagram.com/p/B_jOJT1j1Kw/?igshid=1pnmdenagc9cp

On this episode of The Open Door, panelists Jim Hanink, Mario Ramos-Reyes, and Valerie Niemeyer discuss the politics of the presidency and vice presidency. November, and with it the national election, is not so far off. The Biden vs. Trump rematch is officially scheduled. Here at The Open Door we want to think outside the duopoly’s binary box. That means checking in on the candidates of the American Solidarity Party. Our returning and welcome guest is Mr. Peter Sonski. A New England native, Peter and his wife have nine adult children. He has a Master of Science in Management (MSM) degree from The Catholic University of America. His professional experience is in journalism, public relations, and business administration. Peter is concluding his second term as an elected member of Connecticut’s Regional School District 17 board of education. He’ll have lots to tell us about his presidential campaign. Among the questions we will ask are the following.
What does it mean to you to be “pro-life” as a candidate for the President of the United States?
How has your experience in local politics informed your approach to this campaign?
They say behind every good man is an even better woman. How has your wife made you a stronger man and better candidate?
How does your running mate, Lauren Onak, bring strength to your campaign?
Has your campaign experience changed your perspective on what it means to be a citizen?
Have you any new insights into “the system” of politics in America?
Which of your stances as a candidate are you finding the most support for? The most push-back against?
Any thoughts on Christian Democracy and how it may or may not be finding a place in American politics?
How has your faith life been impacted by this adventure, if it’s not too personal a question?
How can folks support your campaign in an effort to bring light to the darkness of our political reality in America?

Big thank you to @arnlyonstattoo for finally giving me my much wanted and 12 years overdue The Open Door vines tattoo! This album was such a massive influence on me when I decided to pursue classical piano and voice studies so many moons ago. Don’t get me wrong, Fallen and Origin are still probably my most listened to albums of all time! But this album holds such a special place in my heart in how it shaped me into the musician and artist I am today. Thanks again, Arn! Please go check out his page and give him a follow if you like what you see! #evanescence #theopendoor #lindsayschoolcraft #cradleoffilth (at Eltham, Victoria, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsKeISgA_Jj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=iiz8zql9l1fn

The Poison Prelude- Album review: The Open Door - Evanescence
‘The Open Door (2006)’ was the second album to be released in the late September of 2006 by the American Rock band Evanescence. Since then they have only had two more releases having had a hiatus twice in their music career, the latest ending in 2015 resuming the tour of their third album, self-titled ‘Evanescence (2011)’. ‘The Open Door (2006)’ marks a stylistic change from the bands first album ‘Fallen (2003)’  and incorporates new sounds such as gothic rock and symphonic metal into the sound they had in the first album. These additions progress this album in my opinion from the original nu-metal sound into a more melodic, operatic version of alternative metal. This album from the get go has an intricate weave of both live and electronic instruments, incorporating the use of synths, electric guitars (with various heavy rock and metal effects), live drums and even a choir in many of the songs. The Vocals carry the operatic tone of the album, Amy Lee (the bands lead vocalist) delivering an emotional and dramatic performance which tells the story written into each of the songs lyrics perfectly. The first song on the album is ‘sweet sacrifice’ and as an opening song to the album instantly grabs your attention and refuses to let go. Featuring rumbling almost growling guitars and a dramatic string section, along with the heart wrenching vocal performance there is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best songs on the entire album. Another song that really grabs attention is further into the album, Titled ‘Lacrymosa’ this song opens with a sequence taken from Mozart's Requiem, this section sharing the same name as the (evanescence) song but with the varied spelling ’lacrimosa’ (1791). This song features not just heavy guitars, but a 22 piece orchestra led by Dave Campbell and The Millennium Choir offering dramatic backing vocals. To me this use of classical music and the incorporation of this so well into a genre such as alternative metal is rather genius and makes the song unlike any other i have heard by artists of the alternative metal genre.
I feel the only thing that frustrates me about this album is that a few of the songs tend to be a little repetitive or close to other tracks on the album, which makes the entire album hard to listen to in one go as it does tend to seem like it lasts forever. However, as a fan of heavier music, i do enjoy this album when i want something more calm yet still heavy. It has the right balance of emotion and attitude to make the songs interesting and attention grabbing but also something i could listen to while doing work without feeling overwhelmed.
