DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH QUOTE 9 OF 9 Thursday, July 13, 2023
What would happen, they conjectured, if they simply went on assuming their children would do everything. Perhaps not quickly. Perhaps not by the book. But what if they simply erased those growth and development charts, with their precise, constricting points and curves? What if they kept their expectations but erased the time line? What harm could it do? Why not try? - Kim Edwards, The Memory Keeper's Daughter

First book done for 2019. Struggled through this one. Sad story but not particularly moving IMO for some reason. Anyone else read it? What did you think? - - - - - - #kimedwards📖 #KimEdwards #holidayreading #whitcoullstop100 #thememorykeepersdaughter #jodipicoult (at Victoria Park, Auckland) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsHAw8XFuwy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=jveen73qfya3

Today's #bookfrommylibrary is The Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards. "Dr. David Henry must deliver his own twins during a blizzard. His son is perfectly healthy, but his daughter has Downs Syndrome. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the girl to an institution and tell no one. Instead, Caroline takes the girl and raises her as her own. An astonishing tale of love and the consequences of long buried secrets." A sweet read (some slow parts) but still an excellent story of choices and acceptance. #thememorykeepersdaughter #kimedwards #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookshelf #books #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #booklover #bookish #bookreview #bookclub #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookcover #bookhaul #bibliophile #igreads #goodreads #thefinchbook #homelibrary #bradsbooks #bookcover #bradslibrary #snapseed #kodak #vintagecamera

What a book haul from when we went to Whitby on Saturday. There are a couple books missing that were left at Chris house but I believe we had a successful book hunt. We picked most of these up from secondhand shops and a couple from the Whitby bookshop. #books #book #reading #bookish #bookstagram #bookhaul #bookhunt #dexter #moriarty #benedictcumberbatch #mist #aspoonfulofsugar #danceonmygrave #thememorykeepersdaughter #theparadisetrees #goodnightmistertom #asongforellagrey #fireseason

Best holiday read this year! Utterly mesmerizing and tragically poignant. A devastating story of one shocking act that affects the lives of many people, showcasing some of the attitudes toward people with Down syndrome in the 1960’s. Highly recommend. A real page turner and so very moving. 📖 💗 #holidayread #thememorykeepersdaughter #kimedwards #bestseller #secrets #families #disabilities #downsyndrome #bestbookever

The Memory Keeper's (sorta kinda) Daughter
Published in 2005 by American author Kim Edwards, TMKD shows a mainly negative pop culture look at disabilities. The plot summary goes as follows: Dr. David Henry and his pregnant wife, Norah, rush to the hospital where Norah delivers twins, assisted by nurse Caroline. Unknowingly carrying two babies, perfectly healthy Paul and Down-Syndrome "cursed" Phoebe, David sees his flawed daughter and tells Caroline to remove her from the room before Norah sees her. Being raised with a chronically ill sister, David witnessed her death destroying his mother and doesn't want his wife to go through the same thing. He tells Norah that Phoebe was stillborn and asks Caroline to take her to an institution, stating her life will be short anyway. Caroline then takes the newborn away and after seeing how poorly she would be cared for, decides to take a leap of faith and raise Phoebe on her own with help from truck driver Al, who later becomes her love interest. One year later, David and Norah's marriage is suffering and she buys him a camera for their anniversary which he quickly becomes obsessed with and begins documenting all aspects of his life. This is where the story gets it's title "the memory keeper." But honestly, what kind of memories is this guy cherishing? Documenting pictures of his perfectly healthy son while his daughter is being raised in Pittsburgh by the woman who delivered her? He did get rid of her because raising a daughter with Down Syndrome would be "time consuming and cause too much heartache," so instead he wrote her off as dead. What a guy. Although this book takes place in the 1960s, I would be willing to guess there are people today who would react similarly if they were aware they had a disabled child. Prepare for survey results in the near future.
