Wonderland by Jennifer Hillier has been rereleased as an audiobook. "Vanessa Castro moved to Seaside to get away from mistakes in her past. Her first day as Deputy Police Chief is not going well. High creep factor in the this one - Clown Museum - Doll House - a dungeon that's an urban myth - there are lots of creepy moments. Vanessa Castro is almost an antihero with the contrast of her behavior at the beginning and her refusal to grant favors. There are several twists from Hillier including a couple of wild ones at the end. Eunice Wong does a wonderful job with the audiobook performance especially with the wide range of characters. Geraldine comes across as not very nice and controlling. Her big issue reminds me of my Mom because she had the same problem. When you hear why it makes sense. Celadon Books put groups of readers together to buddy-read this in April. I apologize to my group because I wanted to finish. I think I liked this even better than WATB. Officer Nora Martin is new to the police force. She's trying to learn all she can from Murph while putting up with vicious hazing from the male officers. She feels strongly that a woman is behind the missing men. No one will believe her - Because who would ever believe a bartender could be a serial killer?" All of the men in this book are pigs. There is not a single likable male character in the entire book. Sophie gets pushed and pushed - and we hear all of those voices that are disparaging to women. Nora hears them too. And Jennett paints a bleak picture for equality in society. This is one of the best audiobook performances you will hear this year. Sophie Amoss and Xe Sands are both phenomenal. The anger and emotion from both characters is great, especially when Sophie is dealing with Mark Dixon. A lot is going on in Sophie's head and she is able to rationalize what she's doing to the very end. Never order a drink called "Men's Tears" (because Sophie adds a macabre ingredient) There's an open, unexpected ending. I only hope that Jennett has a couple of good guys in her life. Alexandra Bracken's new novel, Silver in the Bone, is a story in the King Arthur universe. It's not a retelling (sort of a reimagining) It's a story about what happens when modern relic hunters make their way to Avalon. "Tamsin Lark has no magical ability. When their foster father abandons them, she and her brother spend their time hunting for relics and magical treasures. Ten years later, there are rumors that he is in possession of a powerful ring from Arthurian legend. All roads lead to Avalon where they unearth a deadly secret." My experience with YA fantasy means that the World-Building slows the first part of a book. Once you have a sense of what's going on and the rules of the world, the story can flow a little better. It's interesting to see how Bracken writes around the Arthur legend and characters. Lots of strong female characters and lots of action. Tamsin is a character that doesn't know where she came from or what she's capable of. There's a bit of a cliff-hanger so I'm sure we'll get to see what she can do. Some good YA Fantasy from Bracken. Parikh is great at making the circus and illusions feel real. This takes place mostly during WW ll but the war is in the background (except when Theo and Alexandre are taken) Lena is a character you pull for and want to see have success. This had a slower middle but great finish. Lu always writes some interesting characters. AThere are some moments when Winter and Sydney realize that maybe stereotypes are often wrong. They both have issues with parents. And there are sparks between them. This is a YA/Romance/Action/Thriller. The ending has a surprising villian. Becca Q. Co does a great job with the audiobook narration, especially with the wild ending. Lu leaves us wanting more of these characters. If you like your YA books with a touch of Action/Thriller you'll love this. Wayward is the 2nd book in the Wayward Pines trilogy by Blake Crouch. “Ethan Burke is now sheriff in Wayward Pines. A town where none of the residents know how they got there. They are told where to work and how to live. The town is surrounded by an electrified fence and the residents are under constant surveillance. Many want to leave, but there’s a terrifying surprise beyond the fence…” This book moves quickly and might be better because you know what’s going on in WP. Crouch does a great job with pace and keeping the tension high. I think of Crouch as this generation’s Michael Crichton. He makes futuristic technology believable and throws people at it to see how they’ll react. If you’re a fan of BC’s recent books you should like this trilogy. A Truth for a Truth is the fourth book in the DI Kate Young series from Carol Wyer. "Kate has known for years that her boss, Superintendent John Dickson, was corrupt. Now that she has accidently shot and killed him, Kate decides to cover up her involvement and continue to search for the other corrupt members of the force. When Kate's team is tasked with finding the missing Dickson, she must point them away from her and still follow up on leads of corruption. The pressure is almost unbearable and Kate has no one to trust or confide in. Can she root out the bad guys before she is caught?" This books picks up where the previous book ended - the shooting of Dickson. The first half of the book is a little slower because most of it is spent in Kate's head. And it's a crowded place with Dickson and her husband, Chris, competing for space. The second half moves quicker with the reveals about who is involved in corruption and the steps Kate takes to bring closure. There is a Brad character. He has a good start - "could be trusted", "sole human she could rely on" But then we get - "He was as surly as usual" and "Bradley was trouble" Still waiting on that good-guy Brad character. There are some surprises. Wyer is never afraid to do anything to any character, so you can't anticipate where she's going with the story. She resolves part of the story but there is a little cliff hanger. A great addition to the series. You can read this a standalone but it's best to read the series in order.
