Book of Night is the adult debut by Holly Black. I would call this urban fantasy/horror. There is a girl, Charlie, with a past. There are people, called gloamists, who can manipulate their shadows. There are people without shadows and shadows without people. (They’re Blights and are dangerous) Charlie has to find a missing book or bad things will happen. The story and background building took a while to get into. The final act was better and there was a surprising reveal. I kept thinking of Peter Pan (Wendy sewing his shadow) but there was never any mention of that. I was also reminded of The Book of M (where everyone loses their shadow) The whole story felt weird and I had some interesting dreams. 💭 Read the acknowledgments to see some interesting comments from Black about the writing process for this book. Are you looking for a story that leaves you with a good feeling? You need Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. This book has had a lot of positive buzz and I thought the beach was the perfect place to read it. This story is about Tova, a recent widow, who mourns the loss of her son and the future he’ll never have. There’s Cameron - a young man who started life at a disadvantage with a missing father and an addicted mother and can’t seem to get outof his own way. Only Marcellus (full name - Marcellus McSquiddles) a Giant Pacific Octopus 🐙 knows the connection between them and is determined to show them before his time is up. This book is about grief and family in whatever form it takes. The ending is wonderful as well as the journey to get there. (You’ll yell at Cameron a couple of times) Thanks to Ms. Van Pelt for having a Brad character that’s a good guy. (3 books in a row with a Brad 😮) Read this book. Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple has been out for several years. BOTM offered it as an add-on “Bernadette Fox has disappeared. Her daughter, Bee, puts together the pieces of why she left through emails, invoices and school memos and discovers the secret past that Bernadette had been hiding.” Bernadette does things her own way. How would you feel if someone destroyed one of your great achievements just so they could have a bigger driveway? So many great characters and hilarious situations. Stevie Bell is back to solve a murder in Nine Liars by Maureen Johnson. "Senior year at Ellingham - Stevie is adrift. Her boyfriend, David, is in London. Her friends are concentrating on college applications. She's just solved a big case and now there's nothing to distract her. David invites her and her friends to London to do a two-week study abroad. Shortly after they arrive, David's friend, Izzy, tells them about a double-murder from 1995 that her aunt knew about. Nine friends went out to a country estate for the weekend, but only seven came back. Was it a burglary gone wrong? Or is someone still lying? " This story spends a lot of time in Stevie's head. She's worried about life, love and future. Her hoodie choices are interesting and hilarious. It's nice to be in a different location like London and to visit a creepy mansion in the countryside. Johnson makes the Nine a group you want to hang out with (but not too long - too much for me) There are secrets and more deaths. You never know until the reveal who the killer is. There were a couple of clues at the beginning so if you pay attention you might catch something. This can be read as a stand-alone. There are references to previous books but not much is given away if you haven't read them. Not a fan of the very end. Stevie deserves better. A nice YA crime fiction story from Johnson.
